The Mini Max features 100 percent hardwood cabinetry and six feet of interior height. You also benefit from an interior kitchen with a two-burner stove, large refrigerator, a queen or dual twin beds, A/C , a wet bath, and five big insulated windows.

At a starting price of around $24,000 for the 2019 model, the Mini Max gives you a ton of amenities that make your camping trip more like “glamping.”

The Mini Max is an excellent choice for a couple who wants more home-like amenities and the ease of an indoor kitchen when on longer camping trips.

The HC1 by Happier Camper is not quite a true teardrop, but it’s a small, retro-feel camper that most cars can tow , so I believe I had to add it to this list.

The HC1 comes complete with innovative snap-lock modular interior elements. By changing the configuration of the modules, you can transform the space for a myriad of uses, from hauling gear, eating lunch, or sleeping. It even has a sink with portable storage for water.

This camper can sleep up to five adults, more than other tiny campers. It also has a large rear hatch, making loading and unloading easier.

This camper has a dry weight of 1,100 pounds, and a base price of $18,950.

For small families or a group of friends who desire true versatility in a lightweight camper, the HC1 is a great option. Transitioning the interior space opens up more camping and hauling possibilities, no matter what hobbies you enjoy.

High Camp Aluminum Teardrop

This cool, retro-look teardrop model by High Camp Trailers in Portland, Oregon, is stunning in it’s simplicity.

It features a five-foot-wide sleeping cabin with storage and a compact rear kitchen. The kitchen comes with a stainless steel burner cooktop and Coleman cooler.

The birch interior and aluminum exterior is sleek and minimalistic, yet provides the extra comforts you desire while camping. Doors on both passenger and driver side add to ease of use.

Although not required on trailers less than 2,000 pounds , High Camp puts electric brakes on all their trailers to improve handling and increase the life of your tow vehicle’s brake system.

This teardrop has a dry weight of 1450 pounds, with pricing that starts at $16,350. What you receive for the money is high-quality materials and attention to detail.

The High Camp teardrop is ideal for solo camping excursions or cozy couple trips. With enough space to store gear and enjoy a soft bed, it will get the job done reliably, with no extra frills.

Vintage Overland Teardrops

Vintage Overland is a camper company based in Grand Junction, Colorado. For the minimalist who wants rugged durability and a vintage vibe, these teardrops come in several models, all towable by many small vehicles.

The Tuco comes in at 600 pounds, with a four-foot by eight-foot cabin interior, and is the most compact of the teardrop models.

How Much Do Teardrop Trailers Weigh?

The typical dry weight of a teardrop trailer runs between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. Since teardrops exploded in popularity, and with the advent of so many teardrop DIY projects, it is often difficult to tell the difference between an actual teardrop and a very small travel trailer. 

DIY teardrop projects include everything from a build-up using a traditional hauling trailer to a repurposed horse trailer. Some of these qualify as a teardrop and some don’t. So, to keep things simple, we’re just sticking with the traditional teardrop look and weight. 

Keep in mind, some teardrops can get pretty big, while still being considered a teardrop. This is mostly a manufacturer thing. If they define it as a teardrop, it falls in the teardrop category. For example, the Little Guy Max has a dry weight of just over three thousand pounds. While that sounds like a small camper, it’s technically a teardrop. 

How Much Do Teardrop Trailers Cost? 

Teardrop trailers vary in size and price. Even after the RV backlog pricing adjustments, the average teardrop trailer can range from $7,000 to $45,000.

Factors that affect the price of teardrop campers include: 

• Features and amenities
• Self-contained versus a rear hatch kitchen
• New vs used

Larger teardrop campers come with many features and amenities that smaller ones don’t. These can include a bathroom, an interior kitchen, a solar setup, and more. 

Do Teardrop Trailers Have A/C?

Some teardrop trailers have A/C, depending on the floorplan the manufacturer is going for. Most do not come with an A/C unit. Even a small A/C takes some juice to run and oftentimes, it’s up to the customer to add the requisite power requirements post-purchase. Escapod offers A/C units in their TOPO series of teardrops, as well as Tiny Camper, and Small-Fry. 

In terms of DIY projects, an A/C unit is entirely up to the person building it. For the most part, an air conditioner in a teardrop doesn’t need to be any more than 5k BTUs. The small interior space just doesn’t demand much. 

As a DIY project or an aftermarket add-on, the only thing the consumer has to do is properly match the power requirements of an A/C unit (along with anything else in the teardrop) to their available power, via solar panels, batteries, or generators.

Are Any Teardrop Trailers 4 Season?

There are four-season teardrop trailers, whether you build it that way or buy it that way. The Escapod TOPO2 is a primary example of a four-season teardrop camper. It’s an off-road camper, which makes sense given its size and aerodynamic profile, and it comes with a wide variety of options. 

It doesn’t take much to put together a teardrop with premium insulation. Unfortunately, you will pay a premium price for it. The typical TOPO2 is around $50k. The thing about teardrops is they’re endlessly modifiable. If you build one yourself, you’re free to add your own premium insulation and harden it against cold-weather environments.

For the most part, those who enjoy winter camping in teardrops bring their own portable water. Some larger teardrops have tanks but it’s not as easy to keep them heated in the cold.

Please add the Helio Trailers. We had to avoid the tab and Braxton due to tongue weight. Well over our 200 lb limit. The helio O2 sleeps 2 has a wet bath. Frig. 2 burner stove. 1500-1600 lbs and a 135 tongue weight. Electric breaks. Canadian made. A bit pricey. But our ‘13 forester handles it pretty well. Thanks

These aussie-built mini vans are hard to resist.

If you hadn’t noticed old-school teardrop campers are making a comeback in Australia.

The tiny bed-on-wheels concept dates back to the 1930s, but it seems a lot of people still like the idea of a super-lightweight, super-compact hard-walled camper, judging by the  number of new locally-built examples hitting the market, from small West Australian start-ups to industry leaders like Jayco.

Here are some of our favourites..

Cool Beans camper

Cool Beans Campers launched its new range of on- and off-road trailers at the 2019 Perth Caravan & Camping Show in Western Australia.

Built in Fremantle, Western Australia by a two-man team with extensive experience in the trades and construction industries, the Cool Beans campers feature all the typical teardrop features, including cosy queen bed interior, rear lift-up kitchen and egg-shaped profile with exposed wheels and guards.

However, to set them apart from rivals the Cool Beans trailers feature plenty of hand-crafted bespoke touches including D-shaped entry doors with glass porthole windows, and a polished aluminium finish for the one-piece roof section and wheel spats.

Customers can also personalize their campers with the option of any exterior colour for the side walls and steel wheels.

Suncamper Smidge

Motorhome specialist Suncamper is the latest Australian RV manufacturer to introduce a retro-style teardrop camper.

Unveiled at this year’s NSW Caravan, Camping and Holiday Supershow alongside the company's new range-topping Santa Cruz motorhome, the new Smidge campers deliver minimalist camping with just enough room inside the 2.8m long x 1.7m wide body for two adults to sleep or kick back and relax.

Tare weight is around 580kg depending on options fitted, with the ball weight as low as 30kg and a payload of 420kg.

Jayco JPod Outback

Jayco has given its smallest and lightest towable RV the ‘Outback’ treatment, with the release of a new range-topping off-road version of its JPod teardrop camper at this year’s NSW Caravan, Camping and Holiday Supershow.

Instead of leaf springs fitted to the JPod touring models, the new jacked-up Outback version rides on a hot dipped galvanized chassis with the same JTECH 2.0 independent trailing arm coil suspension as fitted to the recently released CrossTrak hybrid camper and JTrek tent trailer.

The JPod Outback also gets bigger 15in black alloy wheels with 235/75 all terrain tyres, an off-road swivel coupling and a front toolbox with room for up to two 9kg gas bottles.

Also part of the JPod Outback package are two gas bayonets, a slide-out kitchen with sink and two-burner cooktop, and front and side checkerplate protection for the fibreglass walls.

Roadstar Colt

Roadstar Caravans is best known for a range of high quality larger caravans, but the Somerton, Victoria-based manufacturer snuck its very own mini-van onto the market in early-2017.

Roadstar Caravans’ boss Ken Nizam was quick to point out that the Colt was no ‘cheap-and-cheerful’ model, sharing many of the features of Roadstar’s ‘big’ caravan range, including the latest fibreglass sandwich panel construction using high-strength European-sourced MS22 sealant and clean exterior and interior styling, right down to handle-less cabinetry and ‘hidden’ internal wiring.

Riptide Campers

Bridging the gap between the smallest caravan and a tiny teardrop camper, the Riptide touring and off-road models are being promoted as the largest Oz-built production teardrop camper, offering up to 30 per cent more interior space and more usable storage than many of its rivals.

Overall, the Riptide Breeze measures 4450mm long, 2020mm wide and 1840mm high and with a Tare weight of 860kg, unloaded ball weight of 35kg and up to 500kg payload, it’s towable by many small cars.

Teardrop campers for sale in Australia – 2024

If you’ve been looking for teardrop campers for sale here in Australia, you’ve come to the right place.

I’ve been thinking about teardrop campers ever since we had a couple of these little campers come in to the show grounds where we were staying.

One turned up on a bit of a windy, blustery day, so we set about finding them a reasonably protected spot (right beside the chooky sheds, as it happened) since they needed to cook their dinner without the wind whipping out the flame on their gas cooker.

This got me thinking about the pros and cons of a teardrop camper trailers and whether or not I could travel in a camper that is so small.

In my opinion, the pros and cons of teardrop campers are pretty much at the opposite ends of the spectrum. What makes teardrop campers great… can also be what make them horrible!

• Small – basically a bed on wheels
• Light weight – can be towed with almost any vehicle
• Have most things you need – a warm bed, cooking facilities, somewhere to retreat in the rain
• Price – not as cheap as a tent, but certainly not as expensive as a full caravan. You’re more likely to be looking in the $10-20k price range for a teardrop camper, compared to $50k+ for a caravan.
• Small – you can’t stand up in them, so it’s really just for sleeping and relaxing
• Outside living – it’s basically just a bedroom so you’ll be doing most of your living outside (which can also be a ‘pro’!)
• No bathroom – so you may be limited to staying in caravan parks or campgrounds that have facilities

There’s not a whole lot to be said about teardrop campers, really.

They have that distinct shape, they’re generally only a little big bigger than a double or queen bed, and have a kitchen on the rear end.

Teardrop campers range in price from $10,000 – $20,000 with some going all the way up to $35,000 AUD.

Teardrop campers are not so common in Australia, but I have seen a couple and it got me to wondering if there are many manufacturers here in Australia. Thanks to google, this is what I’ve found…

For clarity, I’m only going to look at campers that are in that classic teardrop shape that are only about as big as a bed, and have the kitchen on the rear.

There are plenty of other small campers that are only as big as a bed, but just to keep this list from becoming bigger than Ben Hur, I’m limiting it to teardrop shaped campers.

I’m including these so you can get an idea of what else is available on the market.

What about if you want to build your own teardrop camper?

You may be looking for t eardrop camper plans or even teardrop camper kits, but I’ve found them pretty hard to come by here in Australia.

However, I have found a website that’s a wealth of information for anyone building their own teardrop camper trailer.

The Aussie Teardrop Campers website has heaps of really helpful information.

The only Teardrop Camper Kit I’ve been able to find here in Australia, is a Chesapeake Light Craft Australia kit sold by Denman Marine. Here’s a link to the kit so you can check it out for yourself.

Do you think it’s worth considering a teardrop camper for your holidays around Australia?

Personally, I think a teardrop trailer is perfect either short-term (2 weeks or less) holidays or a trip where you’re going to be moving around a lot (like on a road trip right around Australia). You have all the important amenities (somewhere to sleep and somewhere to cook) in something that’s small, lightweight and easy to tow, while also being way more comfortable than a tent and easier to set up than an RV.

Does this make you want to hop straight online and look for teardrop campers for sale near you?

Hello benandmichelle 😊 Thank you for this great list of teardrop vans and links to their manufacturers. Several years ago I saw an actual t@b caravan here in Australia. It was secondhand and for sale privately but although only it sold for only $13000 that was out of my price range at the time. After it sold I almost immediately regretted not buying it even if I had needed to stretch the budget a bit more. The seller told me that she believed there were only two in Australia at the time. I really liked that although still classified as a teardrop caravan one could still stand up inside and it had an interior kitchen. I’ve looked on and off for another or something really similar almost from the time I passed on the one I mentioned. I just got really excited when I saw the t@b and t@g vans on this post, until I realised that those were from an American manufacturer. 😌

I’m just wondering if you might know if something really similar is available in Australia, or how to get one here from overseas? I expect I would be looking at a big expense to import one though, even if it were possible. I don’t know if any caravan sales places get caravans from overseas or if all are made here in Australia.

I know they have secondhand t@bs for sale at times in the UK where they are pretty big (although I’m not sure if those t@bs have toilet and wash facilities inside…as the t@g does and which would be a bonus). Getting one here though is a problem.

I’m sure there must be more people in Australia than I that would love a van such as the t@b or the t@g!

I’d be most grateful for any information you can give me, and thank you again for this comprehensive list.

Hi there, We are looking to purchase a teardrop camper.....just one concern. How can we enclose the side area of the kitchen with a more permanent awning. Most of the options on the market appear Very light weight and take away from the appearance of the teardrop.....is there a manufacturer or tent maker out there that custom makes awnings? Specifically to suit teardrops? Vistabule a company in the USA seemed to have one, but not available in Australia...😀

Over the past 14 years of owning & travelling in our T@B teardrop, the only downside is people asking & interested about our van and the surprise they get with how much is fitted into a small space. Can anyone help me with a 4 sleeper Tear Drop? I have contacted all the companies listed in this article & am having no luck! We have 2 small children & ive seem some interesting set ups including a bed above the queen & bunk beds. Some people have made their own but I don’t have that capability! Help! This is what I want for my family to adventure in!!

Having a teardrop camper for last 5 years or so, it has been well-worth the purchase. Longest trip was about 6 weeks around Tassie, no problems. Need to make sure you keep things quick and simple, eg have some kind of shade- instant up gazebos do the trick, lightweight and quick to take down. You need to be organised with your gear with a teardrop. If you are not going to use something, don't take it.

One of my friends built the Denman Marine kit. It's an impressive lightweight unit. There's one for sale in Melbourne for $11K- painted grey though.
