There is a flight at 17:15 and 17:45. The distance between the ferry terminal in Zanzibar and the airport is only 8km, much shorter than Dar Es Salaam. Plus, there's no heavy traffic in between, so you'd take about 20-30min to make it.

How To: Dar Es Salaam to Zanzibar by Ferry

It’s easy to travel to Zanzibar from Dar es Salaam by Ferry. I recommend that you buy the ticket in person at least a day before your intended departure. Having that ticket in hand will save you time and hustle from having to go buy your ticket first, luggage on one side and fending off persistent ticket vendors on the other, all the while checking the time and/or figuring out what to do next. We bought our ticket a day before and the next day, all familiar with the location, we knew exactly where to go. Another advantage of coming in person is that you can ensure you’re booking directly as online sources are plagued with resellers. Although online booking is possible, I find that in Africa, the classic way is still the most convenient.

There are several companies to choose from, the main ones being Azam Marine and Fast Ferries. They don’t differ much in quality so just choose one depending on your preferred departure time. It’s best to travel either in the morning or around lunchtime to arrive in Zanzibar in daylight. There are different seat types and we chose the business class, which was quite comfortable. The economy one was rather basic but sufficient if you want to save a buck. The VIP one had more fluffy cushion but I didn’t think it was worth it unless maybe, you’re traveling with kids.

Where to buy tickets in Dar: Ferry Booking Office at Sokoine Dr, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The ticketing office and the ferry itself is in the same place,  just next to each other. How to get there: Best to use Uber or any metered taxi. Price of Ferry Ticket: 30-50 USD per person for non-Tanzanians (Economy | Business | VIP). At the time of purchase, they don’t accept cards so make sure to bring sufficient cash. You can pay in USD or local currency Travel time from Dar to Zanzibar: 2.5 to 3 hrs.

• On your date of travel, make sure to leave way ahead of time as it can be extremely traffic in Dar.
• Upon arriving at the ferry station, just go straight to the gate and try not to look confused to avoid getting the attention of street vendors and porters. With this said, you will be pestered by a lot of porters. They are wearing green/ orange vests and they will carry your bags right away as if it’s mandatory. Hold your ground and refuse by all means- don’t let go of your bag but keep your cool, unless you’re willing to pay them, which is not just a tip but a fixed price to that they will only tell you later on. You are not required to use porters at all and you should not support a system that bullies tourists,
• When you get inside, you will be asked to leave your bag in a certain area where crew members are supposed to stow them in an open container. Make sure to stand by your belongings and see to it until they have been stowed in one of those cages. Don’t leave your bags lying on the ground even if they have been tagged.
• You should bring your passport (with the Tanzania visa) and Yellow Fever Certificate when traveling to Zanzibar as they have separate immigration,
• They sell some snacks and drinks on-board. In the waiting area on the ferry, there are some stalls as well, the prices are cheaper there so you can buy to take with.
• Also in buying snacks, make sure to bring cash.
• You are not allowed to take photos of any sort at the entry (during the scanning of bags),

ARRIVING IN ZANZIBAR:

Immigration at Zanzibar

Once you get off-board and claimed your luggage, simply follow the crowd and get in line in the immigration with your passport. They don’t ask for any requirements so it’s more like a double-checking of your visa. If you’re staying in a hotel, it would be best to arrange your pick up through them. Otherwise, you should find several options for local transportation. Just make sure to agree on the price beforehand.

I absolutely love taking the Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar ferry and have taken it many times! More than I can even remember, and I still find it kind of exciting.

The main ferry company is Azam Marine – Kilimanjaro Fast Ferries and they are generally very reliable and fast.

But the whole process of booking and taking the ferry can be a little overwhelming at first, so here’s my handy guide to ensure you have an easy trip across the Indian Ocean on the Zanzibar ferry!

Types of Ferry

They have two different types of ferry – passenger ferries and cargo ferries. This post will focus on passenger/foot passengers only.

To take a car across to Zanzibar, you will need to contact Azam directly and ask about their Sealink cargo ferries.

Departure Times

There are 4 ferries in each direction per day, leaving at:

The journey takes around 2 hours and the afternoon tends to be the choppiest time of day. I much prefer taking the earlier ferries when the sea is calmer.

Ticket Types

There are a few different types of ticket you can buy for the Zanzibar ferry:

Economy Class

• Adult (Above 10 Years): 25,000 TSH
• Child (Below 10 Years): 15,000 TSH
• Adult (Above 10 Years): $35
• Child (Below 10 Years): $25

Business Class

• Adult (Above 10 Years): 35,000 TSH
• Child (Below 10 Years): 35,000 TSH
• Adult (Above 10 Years): $40
• Child (Below 10 Years): $40
• Adult (Above 10 Years): 50,000 TSH
• Child (Below 10 Years): 50,000 TSH
• Adult (Above 10 Years): $50
• Child (Below 10 Years): $50

Royal Class

• Adult (Above 10 Years): 60,000 TSH

For all tickets, you can also pay the non-resident fees in the TSH equivalent.

Booking Your Ticket

The Zanzibar ferry can get very busy, so it’s advisable to book your ticket ahead of time, even if it’s just a day or two before. You can either book online, go to either the Dar es Salaam or Zanzibar ferry terminal or book through an approved agent. Some hotels will also sort ferry tickets out for you too.

You will need your passport (or a copy of it) to book your ticket.

In Dar es Salaam, the main ticket office is in the building to the right of the gate that leads to the ferry (if facing towards it).

In Zanzibar, it’s just down the street from the main entrance to the ferry terminal (turn left if coming out of the gate) next to the mini-roundabout.

If you book online, you can reserve your ticket, but you can’t pay in advance (currently), so you need to collect your ticket at least 3 hours before departure otherwise they might sell them to someone else.

In Dar es Salaam there are also lots of touts outside the main building who will try and lead you to one of the smaller offices to buy your tickets. I think most are legit, but I prefer to buy from the main office. If it’s super busy when you go, the smaller offices may be quicker but do not buy from anyone in the street claiming to be an agent.

You will need your passport details handy when booking. When you get your ticket, just check the name, time and date are correct. I almost missed my ferry last time because they booked me onto the 7am ferry instead of the 9.30am ferry like I asked.

You can pay in either US Dollars or Tanzanian Shillings.

Which Ticket to Buy?

Usually, I travel Economy Class on the Zanzibar ferry. I tend to sit outside anyway, so it doesn’t really matter to me.

One time, I tried to book on the day (I should know better), so I had a long 5-hour wait in Stone Town for the last ferry and they only had Business Class available.

This worked out well as it gave me access to the air-conditioned VIP lounge, with big comfy couches and nice(ish) toilets.

I was able to chill, get some work done (they have free WIFI in the terminal for everyone, it’s the Zanlink one, but the seating/heat in the main waiting area isn’t ideal for working) and it was very nice.

Once I got on the ferry, I ended up sitting in my usual spot outside in Economy Class anyway.

In Business Class, the seats are slightly better and you usually get a drink and a snack included, but to be honest, Economy Class is just fine.

So I guess it’s up to you!

Departure & Boarding Procedure

I’d advise you to arrive at least 30 mins prior to the departure time.

To get through the first gate, you’ll need:

• Your passport.
• And possibly your Yellow Fever certificate (see below).

If leaving Zanzibar you’ll also need to fill in a Departure Card and go through Passport Control.

You will then proceed to security.

Once your bags have been scanned, you’ll get labels for them before heading down to the dock where they will check your ticket again.

On the dock, you’ll be able to store your big bags in one of the cages provided (keep a note of the cage number so you can find your luggage at the end) or you may be able to place them in one of the storage cupboards on the boat. Just ask a member of staff and they’ll point you in the right direction.

Keep your daypack and any valuables with you, at all times.

When you arrive at either terminal (either on arrival or departure), there will be a ton of porters swarming about who can help you with your bags.

In Dar es Salaam, they’re kind of aggressive, not in a bad way, they just want your business, but you have to be firm as they will start carrying your bags before you’ve had chance to stop them.

The going rate for carrying your bag to or from the ferry is about 5000 TSH ($2) per bag. Just make sure you agree on the price beforehand as they will try and get more cash if they can after the fact.

They’ll also sometime usher you through the crowds and get you onto the ferry early, just be aware that if they do this, they’ll want an extra tip.

Where to Sit

The inside of the Zanzibar ferry is air-conditioned and the seats are pretty comfy.

I usually head inside and go straight to the front of the boat on the level that you enter (Economy Class) and sit as close to the outside door (which is on the left) as possible.

You are not allowed to sit outside immediately on the way out of Dar es Salaam (but you usually can on the way out of Zanzibar) but after you are out of the port, you can go outside.

Sitting outside is fun, especially if you’re sitting on the front row.

Occasionally you’ll see dolphins and if it’s a bit windy, it kind of feels like you are flying as the catamaran-style ferry glides over the waves, making it feel more like a fun fairground ride than a boat.

Sitting outside is also better if you get seasickness too. The water can be choppy sometimes and the Zanzibar ferry is known for making people feel sick. Just remember to protect yourself from the sun if you go outside.

Occasionally, if the weather is bad, they may not allow you outside.

What to Wear

Culturally, the coastal areas of Tanzania and Zanzibar are quite conservative, so I would avoid any clothing that is too revealing.

I mean, everyone is used to tourists, but ladies should stay away from super short shorts or low tops (my top above is too low and looks worse from the angle, but I was covered up most of the time and especially when I got to Stone Town) to try and avoid causing any offense. Tanzanians are generally very polite so would never say anything, but you may get a few funny looks and offend a few people.

If you are sitting outside, you may also want something to cover you, like a long-sleeved top or scarf as it can get chilly/the sun is strong on the water.

Be careful though, it gets very windy when that boat speeds up, so hold onto your hat and do not wear a short skirt or dress unless you want everyone to know what colour your knickers are.

Food & Drink on the Ferry

The ferries have food and drinks kiosks, usually serving a small selection of things: chapattis, samosas, mandazis (Tanzanian doughnut), sandwiches, fish cakes, chocolate, crisps, cold and hot drinks etc.

If you’re in Business Class and above, you will be served a drink and a snack. Just be aware you are not allowed to bring alcohol on the ferry and they don’t sell it either.

Arriving at Your Destination

On the ferry from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar, you will be given a Boarding Card to fill in so have a pen in your bag.

When you arrive in Zanzibar, you will be asked for your Yellow Fever certificate.

If you have flown into Tanzania and Zanzibar directly, from a non-Yellow fever risk area (ie. Europe or the US), then you shouldn’t need a YF card. However they may still ask.

If they ask for it, explain where you have come from.

But, if you have transited through Kenya, Ethiopia, or any other “at-risk” country for more than 12 hours then you will need a Yellow Fever certificate.

You will then go through immigration, so have your passport and boarding card ready.

Arriving in Dar es Salaam is a little more straightforward as you don’t need your YF certificate and you don’t need to go through immigration, as it’s all done on the Zanzibar side.

You will usually collect your bag from the cages which will be brought out of the ferry and either into the terminal or to the dock, just ask a member of staff where they will be taken.

If you store your bag in one of the cupboards on the boat, collect it before you disembark.

I usually prefer to store my bags in the cages as it means less carrying at the other end.

Getting To Your Final Destination

As soon as you leave the main building, there will be taxis waiting.

A taxi from the ferry terminal in Zanzibar to anywhere in Stone Town shouldn’t really cost more than $5 (approx. 11,000 TSH). If your hotel is inside the medina, you may need to walk the last little bit as the taxis can only go so far.

If you do get a taxi to a hotel in Stone Town, just be aware that it’s a one-way system, so you will have to turn left out of the terminal, even though most hotels are to the right. You will around the back of Stone Town and back in at the other end. This is normal.

You can also easily walk to most hotels in Stone Town from the Zanzibar ferry terminal, but you may not want to if your bags are heavy and/or you don’t know your way around.

If you are heading to Kendwa/Nungwi or Paje/Jambiani, taxis should be around $30. They will usually lead in with $50, but $30 – $35 is the going rate and you may be able to get slightly cheaper if your negotiation skills are good!

The lowest private taxi I managed to get was $20, but I think he was going that way anyway.

Local buses leave from Darajani Market and cost no more than a couple of dollars to pretty much anywhere on the island.

Most hotels can organise share taxis to other destinations on the island, which are usually $10 pp. My friend booked onto a share taxi but no-one else did so she ended up paying $15, but it was then pretty much a private taxi.

You can also pre-arrange a taxi via your hotel.

Dar es Salaam

If you are staying nearby the Zanzibar ferry terminal, you may just be able to walk it. If you are staying at a hotel further away you can pick up a taxi when you arrive – they are all waiting just outside the terminal.

Ask someone working inside the terminal (not the porters, maybe someone in a shop or who works on the boat) how much a taxi will be to wherever you’re going. They may be able to give you a good indication so you don’t get ripped off. Almost everyone who works inside the terminal is in cahoots with the taxi drivers, so they will be keen to get a cut.

A normal taxi from the ferry port to the main airport is approximately 30,000 TSH. Many of the taxi drivers hang around the exit and inside the terminal and as soon as they spot you you’ll hear a hopeful “Taxi?”.

Don’t feel pressured, take your time.

If you are going elsewhere, just think that to the airport costs 30,000 TSH ($13) and takes about 20 minutes, so use that as a guide.

You can also use Uber in Dar es Salaam. But, whilst Uber may be cheap (around 8,000 TSH – 20,000 TSH from the ferry to the airport depending on the size of the car) you can end up waiting a while for them to show up. Also, bear in mind that the drivers make hardly anything, so if you choose this option, you should add extra on top as a tip.

Or would 30mins-1hr be acceptable, since it will be pretty early in the morning? If I have to venture there at 4am, I’ll do it, but I wouldn’t mind sleeping a touch longer!

We are staying a couple of nights in Daressalam, before heading to Nungwi. Flights and ferry seem to be reasonably cheap, but we will have more than 23/25kg luggage, because we take scuba diving gear (no cylinders) with us. The airlines are charging you a fortune for luggage weighing more than 23kg and I couldn’t find information about additional luggage at ferries.

If anyone has sound information, which could help us getting a pleasant and not over the top expensive journey, from Daressalam to Zanzibar and up to Nungwi and back, we would be very grateful for your advice.

They’ve never checked the weight of my luggage so I’m sure you’ll be fine.

Once you get to Stone Town, your best bet is to get a dala dala or a taxi to Nugwi. Taxi may be better if you have lots of luggage.

We tried booking our tickets online ahead of time, but it did not work; we tried different browsers and different cards, but it did not work. Instead, we went to the Azam Marine Ferry office earlier in the day and purchased tickets. We had to have our passports for the tickets. I am glad we did this instead of right before boarding. Not many Royal tickets were available, and it would have been inconvenient to have all of our luggage and try to take it inside the small ferry office.

Boarding the Dar Es Salaam to Zanzibar ferry

We took an Uber from the hotel to the ferry. It was overwhelming to board. Once the Uber driver arrived, there was a crowd of porters around the car to the point that they did not even let us get out of the vehicle. Once the trunk was opened, they reached for our bags without asking. It was a rush to see who would win. It was very overwhelming, and people should not go for their bags. It was to the point that they tripped us up. Two porters walked us through the entire process; it was very forceful. We could have figured it out ourselves. Of course, all this was done for a tip. I did not like that part of the experience, which makes me not want to retake the ferry. 

The process of boarding includes:

• Show ticket/passport at the gate
• Get baggage tags
• Put bags through security
• Step into an office and show passport and ticket again
• Drop bags in a cage, take note of the number of the cage your bag is in.
• Sit in the waiting area

Since we purchased Royal tickets, we could go to the VIP area, which was air-conditioned and inside.

Azam Marine Dar Es Salaam to Zanzibar ferry Classes and Amenities:

Tickets for dhow ferries cost between $20 and $30. Standard ferry are also cheap considering they cost $40–$60, while the fast ferry cost no more than $80.

Approximate turn-around time for the tree categories is 105 to 180 minutes, which is reasonable. Boat trips to Zanzibar allow you to enjoy the Indian Ocean lull.

There are a couple of ways to get from Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar . The fastest is to fly. It’s a quick and easy option and saves time on hanging around. There are currently three flight departures per day, but you will have to spend at least an hour at the airport before take-off. 

The Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar flight time usually lasts for no longer than half an hour. It's a short but very scenic flight, so make sure you make the most of every minute.

An alternative way to get off the mainland is by boat. The ferry is fairly frequent and leaves downtown Dar harbor at regular intervals. It makes the crossing over the Indian Ocean in under three hours.

Being onboard this ferry for just over two hours will encourage you to catch up on some reading or perhaps get to know a few of your fellow traveling companions. Lots of local people make this route as well as holidaymakers, so you never know who you might bump into along the way.

First-class passengers have a place to purchase food and drinks and can use the first-class washroom. Economy passengers also get a bathroom, but nowhere to buy provisions. So you’ll see loads of people quite happily tucking into their own supplies.

No alcohol is served on any Dar es Salaam to Zanzibar ferry — please avoid bringing any onboard. Otherwise, keep it safely stowed away in your luggage to ensure you don't disrespect local customs and laws.

Travelogue: The Boat To Zanzibar

F rom my vantage point on the top deck, I could see the receding skyline of Dar Es Salaam far in the distance, sprayed in the early morning sunshine like a totem of a golden land.

Before long, all that was left of the ‘City of Peace’ were silhouettes and shadows of important landmarks such as the Coco Beach, Golden Tulip Hotel, Giraffe Hotel among others.

The ‘Lady of Zanzibar’ (Kilimanjaro V) built for Azam Marine- Kilimanjaro Ferries of Tanzania by Richardson Devine Inc at Prince of Wales Bay, Australia is said to have a maximum speed of 30 knots.

To the question of why ships/boats and countries (and sometimes cars and other vessels and vehicles) are often referred to with the feminine pronoun, is the prosaic explanation that the gender of the Latin word for “ship” — Navis — is feminine.

But people generally agree on the more romantic notion of the ‘ship as a she’ phenomenon: that it stems from the tradition of boat-owners, typically and historically male, naming their vessels after significant women in their lives — wives, sweethearts, mothers.

On the other hand, a popular if not male chauvinistic explanation states that; “A ship is called a she because there is always a great deal of bustle around her; there is usually a gang of men about; she has a waist and stays; it takes a lot of paint to keep her good-looking; it is not the initial expense that breaks you, it is the upkeep; she can be all decked out; it takes an experienced man to handle her correctly; and without a man at the helm, she is absolutely uncontrollable. She shows her topsides, hides her bottom and, when coming into port, always heads for the buoys.”

Earlier that morning, I had left my northern Tanzanian base of Bagamoyo for the Nigerian Embassy in Dar Es Salaam where the embassy driver, Idi was waiting to take me to the Ferry Station in the downtown section of the city.

Eager to make my visit to Tanzania as comfortable as possible, the ever-helpful Nigerian Ambassador, H.E. Salisu Umaru, had suggested that I travel to Zanzibar by air. ‘’It is just a 15-minute trip and it is safer and less stressful than a boat trip’’ he said.

However for me, adventure comes before comfort, so I opted for the two-hour boat trip instead. That was when I was laden with some instructions for my ‘safety’.

Apart from the need to purchase the 35USD ticket a day ahead of my departure date, I was also asked to come with my International Passport and Yellow Fever vaccination card for the purposes of immigration formalities. In addition, I was advised to avoid the top deck of the boat because of the seasickness caused by the huge waves which could make the ferry to rock vigorously.

As ‘The Lady of Zanzibar’ continued on her journey, I observed that the top deck economy section where I was seated was full of Tanzanians while the VIP and Business Class sections were made up of foreigners. It was also very obvious that the economy cabin had been overbooked with many passengers having to sit on the floor and in the aisles with their wares scattered everywhere. And when I recalled that previous boat mishaps in Tanzania had been caused by overcrowding, my heart missed some beats.

According to a local publication; ‘’The MV Faith’ which began its final journey at the port of Dar es Salaam, sank in May 2009 shortly before docking at the port of Malindi. Six of the 25 people aboard lost their lives.

In addition, the MV Skagit, which also began its final journey at the port of Dar es Salaam, capsized in rough seas near Chumbe island on 18 July 2012. The ferry had 447 passengers, with 81 dead, 212 missing and presumed drowned, and 154 rescued’’ The reports of the enquiries into these two accidents blamed overcrowding as the cause of the disasters.

Fortunately, ‘The Lady Of Zanzibar’ did not appear to be in any form of danger despite being overcrowded as she continued to glide smoothly on the Indian Ocean which is said to be the warmest ocean in the world. Far into the horizon was a lovely and calm turquoise blue ocean while overhead, a column of dainty white sea birds with golden beaks flew gracefully.

Moments later, we chanced upon columns of fishermen who gaily waved to us from their small and fragile-looking boats. We also passed some tiny strips of Islands hemmed in by an amphitheatre of cliffs lapped by water so clear you would think you were cruising on a river.

As the journey progressed, some craggy mountains and sheltered bays with seductive-looking white beaches emerged one after the other from the midday mist.

No doubt, the gentle swaying motion of the boat coupled with the fresh oceanic air and surrounding serenity was very sedative for before long, almost half of the passengers in the top deck were asleep. I could see the Tanzanian women on the floor and the aisles in their colourful ‘kangas’ (wrappers) fast asleep in the midst of their wares.

Even for me, despite my resolve to stay alert to witness the beautiful environment around me, I soon found myself fighting sleep as I yawned endlessly.

For a while, the horizon emptied out with nothing in sight for miles. We were like this until about 11.20am, when suddenly, a thread of distant land materialized out of the mist as Zanzibar came into view. Close up, I was dumbstruck by the beautiful panorama of Zanzibar’s main city, Stone Town that soon came into full view with buildings which I later identified as the Sultan’s Palace, House of Wonders, the Forodhani Gardens and St Joseph’s Cathedral all tumbling down to a calm bay dotted with an array of shipping vessels and gaily coloured little boats.

We finally docked at 11.35am, exactly two hours after leaving the port at Dar Es Salaam and were welcomed with a huge sign of KARIBU ZANZIBAR (Welcome to Zanzibar).

Next to this sign was another one with immigration instructions from The Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar. And as I disembarked by the gangway, I noticed the clear, turquoise-blue water of that part of the Indian Ocean lapping the shoreline.

This was in sharp contrast to the muddy waters of the same ocean at the beaches in Bagamoyo and Dar Es Salaam. Gaily displayed on the waterfront were a colourful array of small boats with fanciful names such as FACEBOOK, DRAGON, TAMBO, EQUATOR, BLUE WHALE and LADIES FREE among others. The boats, I was told were to convey tourists on sightseeing to different parts of the Island.

As a foreigner, I had to join an hour long queue for Immigration. And when I informed the Immigration Official that I would only be in Zanzibar for just a few hours, the corpulent and friendly fellow advised that I should stay longer in order to enjoy the warm hospitality of his people.

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania in East Africa. It is composed of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, 80 kilometres (28 miles) off the coast of the mainland, and consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba Island. The capital is Zanzibar City, located on the island of Unguja. Its historic centre is Stone Town, which is a World Heritage Site. The name Zanzibar is derived from the Persian zang-bâr signifying “black coast”.Known for it’s white sand beaches, incredible scuba diving, labyrinth like spice markets, and fascinating history, Zanzibar, has a population of 1,303,569 (2012 Census)

The region’s main industries are spices, raffia, and tourism. In particular, the islands produce cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper. For this reason, the Zanzibar Archipelago, together with Tanzania’s Mafia Island, are sometimes called the “Spice Islands” (a term also associated with the Maluku Islands of Indonesia).

In 1973, Zanzibar introduced the first colour television in sub-Saharan Africa. Because of longstanding opposition to television by President Julius Nyerere, the first television service on mainland Tanzania was not introduced until 1994

On 26 April 1964, Tanganyika united with Zanzibar to form the United Republic of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. The country was renamed the United Republic of Tanzania on 29 October of that year. The name Tanzania is a blend of Tanganyika and Zanzibar. Despite this, Zanzibar still remains a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania with its own government, known as the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and its own House Of Representatives.

Outside the ferry terminal, I was met by a barrage of porters, taxi drivers and tourist guides who were eager to offer their services. However following instructions from a Tanzanian friend, I waded through the crowd and turned right on the road outside the terminal.

A few minutes later, I was in the heart of Stone Town, the country’s main city. And as the midday afternoon sun filtered through the ancient buildings and minarets of the main mosque and the nearby Anglican cathedral, I explored some of the Island’s famous sites. Meandering through the narrow streets in the hot humid weather, I visited the National Museum, the Tower Harbour, the old Castle as well as a monument to the slaves of Zanzibar.

The Zanzibar’s slave market I was told was finally closed down in 1873. I was equally fascinated by the Old Dispensary, a beautiful 4- storey colonial building which had now been turned into a Hotel/Gallery where a young artist had displayed his wares of artefacts and paintings.

I was a bit disappointed though at the decrepit state of Stone Town with some of the historically important buildings falling apart while others appeared seedy and unkempt. Things were so bad that at one point during my tour, I became terrified as I made my way through some narrow alleys ominously sandwiched by some precariously tilting and crumbling buildings which were propped up in places by steel stilts. ‘These are ancient monuments that must be preserved for posterity’ was the response from a Tanzanian friend when I suggested that the buildings should be demolished as they constitute danger to tourists.

Things brightened up later when I ventured into the shops where an array of spices, exquisitely woven fabrics, mementoes, perfumes and oils were on display. Thus, I was able to purchase some wonderful works of arts and souvenirs.

Since Zanzibar is said to be an autonomous region, I was surprised to see that the Tanzanian currency was also the official currency on the Island. And even though the customs and immigration officials were provided by the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, I was equally confounded when I saw that the policemen and soldiers wore uniforms of the Tanzanian Police and Army respectively.

Confused at the form of relationship between Tanzania and Zanzibar, I sought clarity from Moussa, my Tanzanian friend.

According to Moussa, the collaboration between the two countries is like a Union with Zanzibar considered as a semi- autonomous region of Tanzania. With this, citizens of both regions do not need visas to travel into each region. In addition, even though Zanzibar has her own President, Vice President and Legislature, the region also produces the Vice President of Tanzania while the mainland of Tanzania produces the President. In addition, while Tanzania and Zanzibar have the same security forces and currency, Zanzibar still retains the right to raise some taxes, especially VAT, Import duties and make some local laws for the smooth running of the region.

The autonomous status of Zanzibar is viewed as comparable to Hong Kong as suggested by some scholars, and being recognized as the “African Hong Kong’’

It was late afternoon before I was able to tear myself away from the fascination of Stone Town to catch the boat for the return trip to Dar Es Salaam.

Unlike our morning trip, passengers on the return trip were very few and everybody was seated with some empty seats remaining. At exactly 3.30pm ‘The Lady of Zanzibar’ blew her horn and headed back to Dar in almost the same way it had arrived Zanzibar a few hours earlier.

Having been forewarned about the likelihood of stormy weather on the afternoon trip, I heeded the advice of avoiding the upper deck and so moved to the mid cabin. And just as I was thinking that we would escape the turbulence, mid-way into our journey, heavy waves hit the boat and the massive marine beauty became a mere toy in the hands of nature as she listed and bobbled heavily on the ocean water.

And while some passengers found the listing and bobbling delightful through their ‘whao- whao’ sounds each time the boat rocked, others became apprehensive.

Very soon, a sizeable number of the passengers became sea sick and requested for vomit bags which were quickly passed around. Fortunately, the rough weather soon passed and we progressed in good weather for the remaining part of our destination.

Just before our arrival in Dar Es Salaam, I went to the upper deck to watch the approaching skyline of the ‘City of Peace’ which emerged in the approaching twilight, a magical city of beautiful people.

MEDEF International’s France-East Africa Business Council and the Sustainable Cities Task Force are organizing the Tanzania-France business mission and forum from May 27 to 29 in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.

The mission revolves around a  business forum in Dar Es Salam dedicated to infrastructure, energy, transport and urban development , organized in partnership with the French-Tanzanian Chamber of Commerce (FTCC) and the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs.

The forum will brings together the Tanzanian government, French companies participating in the business mission, the Tanzanian private sector, the main financial backers, and representatives of the European Union and the African Union.

The forum and mission will help to promote the French economic offer, present French companies’ projects to the government and donors, in particular the European Union within the framework of the Global Gateway program, and meet potential private Tanzanian partners.

The French delegation will then travel to Zanzibar on Thursday, May 30, to meet with the main contractors, the local private sector, and financial backers, with a view to becoming fully involved in the archipelago’s development.
