15 Best Things to Do in Protaras (Cyprus)

Protaras is Ayia Napa’s laid-back neighbour: It’s a resort for those who want those sublime beaches on the southeast coast of Cyprus without the thumping nightlife.

And when it comes to sun and sand you’ll be spoiled rotten, as white sandy bays and hidden coves make up the entire coastline here, only interspersed by rocky headlands that make for superb walks.

The warm, aquamarine seas off the coast are a dream for water sports and on land you can get in the car to track down any number of historic sites and family attractions in the vicinity.

1. Church of St. Elias

Moments from the centre of Protaras is this church that you can spot from miles around.

Built in the 80s, St. Elias roosts atop a 100-metre hill that you can scale via a 150-step stairway. It’s not a challenge to take lightly, especially in the summertime, but once you get to the top you’ll know what the fuss is about.

The vistas are dreamlike and extend over the town and out to the sea beyond. Take a moment in the garden up here to look at the trees of remembrance, onto which locals tie ribbons to remember loved ones.

2. Fig Tree Bay

Protaras’ main beach, Fig Tree Bay is typical of the coastline on the east side of the peninsula: It’s a fabulous sweep of powdery white sand served by rows of sun loungers beneath shades.

As its right next to the town, Fig Tree Bay can get busy in summer, but that won’t matter, because it’s the sea that makes this beach great.

The waters are phenomenal, as about 50 metres offshore there’s a small island that separates the beach from the open sea.

This creates a long and broad expanse of waist-high water, so clear that you can see each grain of sand on the seabed!

The whole southeastern tip of Cyprus is a natural park and one of the island’s great beauty spots.

You can tackle the cape on land or by water, and both methods will get you close to the cinematic scenery.

On foot, you’ll follow trails up to view point that looks out over the rest of the headland and the deep blue Mediterranean.

From the water you hop between the yawning cavities chiselled from the rock by sea currents.

Further along are other strange rock formations, including a natural arch that you can swim beneath on calm days.

Around Protaras and Ayia Napa you’ll have a host of international cuisines on your doorstep.

But during your trip you simply have to get down to a local taverna to try a traditional Cypriot meze.

This isn’t a small affair; meze in Cyprus is a full-blown meal made up of little platters, each more enticing than the last.

The usual order is something like: Olives, bread with dips (humus, tahini and taramasalata), then kalamari, grilled vegetables and halloumi.

After this you can tuck into kebabs and roasted lamb, or chargrilled fish, depending on your choice. All this fare goes great with a local Cypriot wine produced in the mountainous Troodos region.

5. Sirena Bay

Many people only come across this hidden beach by accident after tracing the coastal path, and you can easily miss it from the road.

Sirena Bay is a thin arc of sand and shingle hemmed by vegetation and overlooked by a friendly waterfront taverna.

The dense thicket that encircles the narrow sands means there’s no need for sunshades here, and the serene and shallow waters are just right for swimmers.

From March to November, Cyprus has a dive season longer than anywhere else in Europe.

This is down to the island’s latitude, which grants it comfortably warm waters for much of the year.

The southeastern side of Cyprus is also where a lot of the diving action happens, and a host of PADI-approved companies operate in Protaras and Ayia Napa.

If you’re a newcomer it’s the perfect chance to learn the essentials.

And if you’re experienced you’ll be in heaven, swimming with turtles and rays through the canyon off Cape Greco, or exploring the wreck of the MS Zenobia, which went down off Larnaca Bay in 1980 – with no casualties.

7. Ayia Napa

If you’re in your late-teens or twenties and want to let your hair down Ayia Napa is just a quick cab ride away.

It’s long been known as one of the Mediterranean’s liveliest party places, and attracts young people from across Europe.

Clustered around the town’s square are many of Ayia Napa’s 80 bars and 12 nightclubs, most bouncing ’til dawn seven days a week in summer.

8. Ayia Napa Monastery

Despite its reputation, Ayia Napa isn’t all about wild nightlife.

In the heart of the town is this lovely Venetian monastery that is much the same today as it was 500 years ago.

The limestone walls of the monastery’s church, cloisters and flour mill are standing strong, and have been joined by a new church constructed in 1990 when Ayia Napa’s congregation grew too large for the old one.

Couples who are having trouble conceiving a child come to touch the statue of the Virgin Mary here, claimed to be responsible for several local childbirth miracles!

9. Nissi Beach

South of Protaras is Ayia Napa’s liveliest beach. There’s fun all afternoon at Nissi, with a non-stop beachfront party in the summer.

And if you’re up for it you can even make for the headland on the west side of the bay to try cliff-diving.  For everyone else Nissi Beach is a beautiful place to spend lazy days by the sea.

The white sands are soft and powdery, the waters are clear and shallow, and there’s no shortage of facilities on hand.

10. Konnos Bay

On the way down to Cape Greco you’ll stumble upon this fabulous natural beach.

What makes Konnos Bay so lovely is the way the cove is defended from both the wind and sea currents by headlands that act as a barrier to the elements.

If you’re on holiday with kids then this beach is just what you’re looking for as the tranquil sea is great for the smaller members of your family to splash about in.

Stronger swimmers can bring snorkelling gear to see what they can find under the bay’s rippling waves.

11. Parko Paliatso Funfair and Luna Park

Depending on your disposition one look at Parko Paliatso’s world-famous slingshot will set your heart racing or send shivers down your spine.

Riders enter a capsule to be flung in to the air at high speed by a bungee rope-powered catapult. It’s the highest ejection seat ride in Europe apparently.

A little less hair-raising is the ferries wheel, which stands 45 metres above the park and at the top of your orbit will give you superb views. Try to take a ride at sunset.

12. Day trip to Famagusta

In Ayia Napa and Protaras you can find several tour operators to take you across the Green Line to the port city of Famagusta.

There are plenty of reasons to make the trip, not least to see the Lala Mustapha Pasha Mosque, another melange of gothic Christian and Islamic architecture.

It was a cathedral before the Ottomans took over in the 1500s. Also highly recommended is Othello Castle, which is believed to have inspired the Shakespeare play.

Even if this isn’t true the castle is a striking piece of Venetian military design that was recently restored to its former glory.

13. Varosha

If you’re going to Famagusta you should definitely make time for this ghost town on the south side of the city.

After the Turkish invasion in the 1970s the entire population of one the area’s top resorts fled, and Varosha has remained abandoned ever since.

Unfortunately you can’t enter the resort to see its crumbling towers up close, but you can get some excellent distance shots from the bay.

What catches the eye is the way nature is reclaiming the city in the absence of people: Loggerhead turtles have even started nesting on the beach again.

14. Horseback riding

If you visit Protaras in March or April the hills around the resort are awash with the many colours of wildflowers in bloom.

The poppies are particularly vibrant, with shades ranging from yellow to deep red.

The spring season is a fine time to be out and about and a great way to enjoy the countryside is on a horseback tour. The Moonshine Ranch is on the outskirts if Protaras and offers lessons and allows you to hire horses by the hour.

15. Cypriot Coffee

Even on the cosmopolitan east coast you can sample some Cypriot specialities. Try coffee: In Cyprus a cup of brew percolates on a stove inside narrow copper jug with a long handle so the person who prepares it isn’t burned.

Ground coffee and sugar are mixed with cold water even before the jug goes on the stove. So what you get is a simultaneously powerful and sweet drink, with a syrupy consistency.

When you’ve finished there will be a bitter residue at the bottom of the cup that you probably shouldn’t drink!

With consistent growth during the last three decades it has emerged as an alternative resort to the abandoned Famagusta city since the 1974 Turkish invasion. Protaras has become one of the main tourist attraction locations in the South East coast and in the whole of Cyprus.

• Fig Tree Bay is one of the best beaches of the area where you can enjoy bathing in the calm clear waters of the Mediterranean Sea, lay down in the fine sand or relax in the provided sunbeds and umbrellas. Refreshing fruit cocktails, homemade sandwiches and delicious Frappes are served in a coffee/bar just on top of Fig Tree Bay offering a really pleasant atmosphere to its clients.

The offshore rocky islet that can be seen from the beach offers the chance of some seclusion although you have to be a fairly strong swimmer to be able to reach it.

After the beach, the town has much to offer. With a large variety of shops, picturesque houses and a relaxing seaside pedestrian route stretching for as long as 15 km, you can enjoy some delightful walks in the area. The Profitis Ilias church is a town landmark on top of a hill 100 metres high which offers a glorious panoramic view over Protaras and the Sea. Climb the 300 steps up the hill, view the breathless sight and go inside the small church which is definitely worth a visit.

There is a fantastic selection of restaurants and traditional Cypriot taverns where you can try a large variety of Cypriot dishes, fresh fish and international cuisine.

The staff are usually friendly and welcoming and many times they will be able to speak two or three languages including English.

At night you can test your singing skills at one of the many karaoke bars in town, meet up with the locals and holiday makers at the busy “Flinstones” bar, grab a delicious cocktail at “Ghetto Cocktail Bar” or even watch your football team playing live at the “Fools & Horses” among many other great places to go out and enjoy a fun night out in Protaras.

• According to local legend it is also the home of the 'Ayia Napa sea monster'."}},"i":0}}]}'> Cape Greco . Cape Greco, also known as Cavo Greco is a headland in the southeastern part of the island of Cyprus. It is at the southern end of Famagusta Bay. It lies between the towns of Ayia Napa and Protaras, both of which are popular tourist resorts. It is frequently visited by many tourists for its natural beauty. It is a protected nature park. From the high points on the cliff that rests at the cape one can view amazing sights out to sea. According to local legend it is also the home of the 'Ayia Napa sea monster'.  
• Church of Ayios Ilias . On the outskirts of Protaras is a small attractive stone church set atop a rocky crag - the Church of Ayios Ilias. It is well worth a walk to the church and the climb to the top. From the top there is a panoramic view of Protaras and the surrounding countryside.  
• Church of Profitis Elias. The religious landmark is located at the top of a mountain in Protaras. There are no excursions in the church. While in Protaras, it is worth visiting this place at least once: firstly, because it is free, and secondly, a stunningly beautiful view of the city opens up from the mountain, and in the afternoon and after sunset, the landscapes are different and each is mesmerizing in its own way.

For the most adventurous children, parents and groups of friends, there are also a variety of watersports provided at the beach: parasailing, self-drive speed boats, jet skis, water skiing, wakeboarding, crazy squab, banana, pedal boats, and private luxury yacht.

When planning your holidays you have to take in consideration not only the location, but also the best accommodation that will provide you and your party with value for money according to your requirements.

If you are looking to get away from it all and relax with your family in privacy, a holiday villa may be an option for you. Renting a villa provides you, not only, with more space and privacy but is also a more economical option rather than staying at a small hotel room.

A villa can usually accommodate a minimum of 4 people, and the rental price is charged per week making it more cost-effective than staying at a hotel.

My mini guide to Protaras, Cyprus

Last week, one of my friends got married in Protaras, Cyprus. I was invited out, not only attend, but to sing her down the aisle. For real. Eeeeek!

I’ve never actually sung at a wedding, let alone as someone walks the aisle, so, needless to say I was honoured, but slightly nervous.

The day went gorgeously, my set went down swimmingly (I think, anyway) & she looked absolutely stunning. The sun shone endlessly and we all embraced the outdoor dining and dance floor until the early hours, without even the thought of a jacket.

The wedding was at  Capo Bay Hotel , in Protaras, a popular destination in the south east of Cyprus & of course we extended our stay beyond the wedding to explore and relax another gorgeous corner of the world.

Protaras boasts many gorgeous qualities that we all lust over in a holiday. With spine tingling temperatures all year round, and just a 4 hour flight from the UK, it’s a great place to escape to as the winter sets in.

Here’s my mini guide to Protaras, Cyprus…

Facts about Protaras:

• Drive on the left had side of the road (Same as UK)
• Language: Greek
• The food is very greek based, a popular meal out includes a selection of meze dishes
• Currency: Euros
• The sun rises in Protaras but sets on the other side of the island

Protaras has a gorgeous coast, lined with sandy beaches and wonderfully warm waters. Whilst we were here (mid September) it was 31 degrees C every day (apparently slightly hotter than other years), and the sea temperature was recorded most days at 27 degrees.

Honestly – dreamy!

The beaches are lines with sun beds and wooden huts, offering water sport options for all the family. Let’s just say, if secluded and quiet beaches are your thing, Protaras may not be yours.

Where should you eat in Protaras?

The main hotels in Protaras line up along the beach and back onto the main Protaras strip which is filled with Greek-Cypriot restaurants, amongst all your favourite international cuisines.

My favourite place we dined in on the strip was ‘Promises’ which is just opposite the fountains in the centre of the strip and has a large balcony overlooking Fig Tree Bay (perfect for people watching).

Recommendation: The Swordfish & Tzatziki

Where should you stay in Protaras?

I was fortunate enough to be joined with my Grandma on this little get away and we stayed a 5 minute walk from the strip at the  Coralli Spa Resort  in an  apartment  we picked up on AirBnb  (Get £16 off your first AirBnb trip with this link) .

I’m more of a spender on activities and experiences than a spender on accommodation, as  personally  when I go away, I don’t spend that much time in the accommodation and feel it can be a bit of a waste of money.

That’s one reason I love AirBnb – you can pick up really decent rooms / apartments / houses at a fraction of the hotel price!

The reason I don’t usually spend much time in the accommodation is because my favourite thing to do in a new country is EXPLORE.

Don’t get me wrong, sometimes it’s great to relax and simply sunbathe, but for me, if I’m in a new place, I get seriously itchy feet.

Luckily for me, Grandma fancied an adventure too!

The best things to do in Protaras, Cyprus…

• Walk up to Profitis Elias

This is 20 mins from the centre of Protaras. Walk the whole way along the Protaras Strip (with the coastline on your right) and when you get to the end (after the McDonalds) turn right onto the main road and on the left you will see the church peeking above the buildings.

Follow it and you’ll reach a path which you can ascend to this gorgeous church.

• Hire a quad bike or buggy

Grandma and I hired one of these buggies (below) for our adventure. There are 3 or 4 car/quad/buggy hire companies on the Protaras strip and they all offer a very similar price. We paid 35 Euros for a day (including insurance) and then only had to pay an extra 10 euros to fill the tank up.

The buggy gave us the freedom to explore at our own pace, embrace the weather and venture to the caves. It was great for the distance we covered to Ayia Napa and the caves, but if your looking to travel further around the Island I would definitely recommend a quad, or in fact a car for safety – particularly at higher speeds!

• Take a trip to Ayia Napa

Only a 15-minute bus ride from Protaras is the famous party town of Ayia Napa.

Personally, it didn’t do much for me. I found it a ghost town by day filled with restaurants offering £3 fry ups next door to shops selling neon ‘Ayia F******’ Napa merchandise. Maybe I got the wrong end of the stick, but on first impressions it was clear to see why it’s simply a popular tourist destination for hen do’s, stag parties & young people.

Cyprus’ main party town for sure. If a night out if your thing, and you’re up for a crazy one – Napa has you covered.

Located just 10 minutes by buggy or bus from Protaras, Cape Greco was number one on my to see list & it was every bit as beautiful as I wanted it to be.

A group of gorgeous caves with the clearest of waters falling at their feet.

For those of you (like me) seeking an adrenaline rush, there’s a popular spot where you’ll see people cliff jumping into the warm blues & exploring inside the caves.

There is also a rocky way to climb down (and back up) should you prefer a more cautious option.

• Go on a boat trip
• Go scuba diving
• Explore Konnos National Park
• Try horseriding at Moonshine Ranch
• Beaches to visit: Fig Tree Bay, Green Bay, Vryssi Bay, Kapparis Beach
• Visit Agioi Saranta Cave Church

Even though the trip was short and sweet, Cyprus really was gorgeous to both drive around & stay in.

I got to spend some quality time with my Grandma, something I’ll forever cherish, and I also escaped 5 days of the winter currently descending on the UK!

Hopefully, I’ll be back one day to explore the other side of you Cyprus…

Protaras Cyprus comes under the administrative jurisdiction of Paralimni Municipality which is  the temporary administrative center of the Famagusta District.

Protaras Cyprus Beaches

Situated just a ten minute drive from the lively resort of Ayia Napa , Protaras has some of the best beaches on the island such as the popular Fig Tree Bay.

Many of the beaches have been awarded the blue flag status and most are blessed with golden sand edged by the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean sea.

The rocky coast of Cape Greco is at the southeast tip of the island and some of this area is controlled by the military so out of bounds to tourists. This is a very beautiful and peaceful area of the island and ideal for those who enjoy snorkling and swimming.

Things to do in Protaras

There are a wide range of shops, nightclubs, restaurants and bars, so there’s definitely something for all the family to enjoy.

To the north of Protaras are the towns of Paralimni and Pernera.

• Paralimni is famous for the three churches in the center of town and the church of the Panayia (Virgin Mary) contains an ecclesiastical museum.
• Penera is more peaceful location great for those who enjoy swimming and a more relaxing holiday in the sun.

To the south are many villages such as Ayia Thekla which is famous for the church of the same name.

A little further south is Kapparis which is on the border of Turkish controlled Cyprus.

Getting Here …

Package holidays  to Protaras Cyprus usually arrive at Larnaca airport (LCA). Transfers from the airport usually takes an hour.

Taxis usually cost around €60-70 but it’s best to check with the driver. Ask how much it will cost before the journey starts.

Getting around in Cyprus.

The best way to get around Cyprus is by car. Hire cars can be arranged either in advance or through a local agency once in Cyprus.

If you do not wish to drive yourself, intercity service taxis and regular taxis are readily available.

Public Transport until mid-July 2010 was available but limited. Now, there has been a complete overhaul of the system and the new bus timetables can be found here .
