When it comes to looking polished on the go, nothing beats the convenience of a travel steamer. Whether you’re heading to a weekend getaway or business trip, a good travel steamer — like the Conair Handheld Garment Steamer I swear by — will become your go-to for freshening up your wardrobe. Unlike traditional irons, travel steamers offer quick and easy wrinkle removal without the need for an ironing board, making them perfect for frequent travelers.

Our Travel + Leisure team tested eight travel steamers to assess ease of use, performance, portability, durability, and value. We evaluated and compared each option based on heating time, wrinkle-busting performance on different fabrics, cord length, packability, and more. (Read more about our comprehensive testing process below). We will continue testing our picks for six more months to ensure each option’s reliability and durability, and we will update this article if anything should change. Scroll down below to find your next travel steamer that ensures you’re always prepared to look your best, no matter where your travels take you.

Best Overall

Electrolux garment steamer.

This steamer has the largest water capacity on our list, which comes in handy when you’re steaming multiple items consecutively.

Packing it in tight spaces may be challenging since the head does not fold.

This Electrolux Handheld Steamer is the Goldilocks of our list: everything is just right. From a large water tank to an 8-foot-long cord and multiple steam settings, this steamer strikes the perfect balance between convenience and performance. We tested this steamer twice to make sure it deserved our best overall spot, and it held up thanks to its light weight, powerful steam output, and wide plate that helped cover a wide surface area on each garment. The steamer heats up quickly — though for best results, a five-minute warm-up is recommended — and has a fixed steam trigger that will automatically provide continuous steam without the need to hold it down. We used it on various fabrics, including tuxedos, slacks, linen shirts, and button-down shirts, and each item came out fresh and crisp. When we tested this steamer in our lab during our final round of testing, we were able to steam four clothing items top to bottom, including a thick, wrinkled blazer, without having to refill the tank. We especially loved the ergonomic handle that saved us from hand cramps during extended use.

Best Lightweight

Nesugar steamer for clothes.

The adjustable head gives you options to steam vertically and horizontally.

When the tank is completely full, it tends to spit out some water when you turn it on.

Whether we tested this steamer out on trips or at home, it made quick work of everything from cotton shirts and dresses to wrinkled Roman blinds. And above all, we ranked this steamer high for being so lightweight that you barely even notice that it’s in your bag — perfect to throw into a tote or a carry-on suitcase during travel. The steamer heats up in less than 20 seconds and features a 90-degree rotating head, adding versatility by allowing vertical or horizontal use. The two-button operation is straightforward, though the cord's length was a bit limiting, and the initial water spitting from a full tank was a minor inconvenience. Despite these quirks, its small size and fast heat-up time make it a great choice for frequent travelers when you don’t want to add extra weight to your bag.

Most Compact

Polardo hand held portable travel garment steamer.

Its compact size, quick heat-up time, and effective wrinkle-busting power make it a top choice for travel.

This steamer is not compatible for international travel.

We dub this one the “little steamer that could.” Despite its small size, this steamer delivers impressive performance, heating up in just 25 seconds and effectively smoothing out wrinkles from a variety of fabrics like cotton, linen, and blends. Its lightweight design — just over a pound — and compact size made it easy to pack, fitting comfortably into a weekender bag or carry-on. The detachable, magnetic water tank simplifies refilling, and the steamer’s consistent steam output effectively tackled wrinkles on multiple garments. With a cord over 7 feet long, it offers decent flexibility, though it might require some adjustment for different hotel setups — and you won’t be able to use it for international travel.

Best Heavy-duty

Conair extremesteam hand-held fabric steamer.

This steamer has more steam settings and a longer use time than most others we’ve tested, plus it's very durable.

It’s the heaviest and largest of all the steamers on this list.

I can personally vouch for this steamer because it’s my go-to for travel and at home, having survived several trips and bag checks throughout the years. The steamer heats up in just 40 seconds and features an easy-to-grip handle, attachments, and adjustable steam settings for precise wrinkle removal. Despite its 3.5-pound weight, which might be cumbersome for some travelers, the steamer’s durability and performance makes it worth taking along if you have the space, especially since its L-shaped design and detachable tank make it easy to pack. This Conair option is a solid investment, especially for those who need a reliable steamer that works as well at home as it does on the go.

“I mostly steamed some of my cotton button-up shirts, which are notoriously prone to wrinkles and usually better tackled with a traditional iron,” says T+L senior editor Jasmine Grant . “I was impressed with how effective this steamer got the wrinkles out. I used the attached creaser on the hood of the steamer to get those tough to steam areas like the collar and sleeves, which helped me press those areas down flat. Genius feature!”

Best Iron/Steamer Combo

Nori the nori press.

The steamer’s design, resembling a hair straightener, is easy to use and helps cut down steaming time.

The steam tank is small, so be prepared to refill it often (though you can still use it without the steam).

The Nori handheld steamer, tested on a variety of fabrics including linen, cotton, and denim, proved to be a standout performer. It heats up quickly, in under a minute, and its intuitive fabric settings make it easy to use, much like a high-tech hair straightener for clothes. The steamer's compact, lightweight design — just 1.4 pounds — makes it easy to pack and carry, whether in a suitcase or a weekender bag. It effectively combines the benefits of an iron and a steamer, allowing for quick wrinkle removal on both sides of garments simultaneously as you press it down directly on the clothing. Though it requires frequent refilling due to its small tank, it compensates with its six versatile fabric settings.

“I found the design easier to use than other travel steamers I’ve tried, maybe because I’ve been using hair tools with a similar design my whole life,” says T+L testing editor Jackie Cucco . “I also love how you can switch between fabric settings so easily, and it will tell you to use it for poly, silk, wool, cotton, denim, or linen, so you don't have to guess.”

The Details: 1.4 pounds | 15.5 x 4 x 4 inches long | 0.98-ounce tank | 8-foot cord | 6 steam settings | 10-minute steam time per fill

Best for Thick Fabrics

Hilife steamer.

The steamer's large water tank allows for 20-25 minutes of continuous use, making it efficient for multiple garments before needing a refill.

The steamer is on the bulkier side, which can make it less ideal for tight travel packing.

This HiLife steamer, which we tested on a range of fabrics from silk pajamas to linen pants and work shirts, delivers solid performance with its single "on" setting. We love the long cord length (the longest out of all the steamers on this list), which provides added flexibility and convenience, eliminating the need for constant repositioning. It takes about four to five minutes to start producing steam, which is visible through a window on the steamer. Despite its straightforward design, with an easy-to-fill water tank and a basic plastic handle, this steamer handles wrinkles efficiently, offering up to 20-25 minutes of continuous steam before needing a refill. Although it feels a bit bulky compared to other travel steamers and may not fit easily into a tightly packed suitcase, it functions well without leaks or malfunctions. One thing to note is that the fill line is located in the middle of the water tank, so you may be tempted to ignore it and fill it higher (like we did), but hot water will start spurting out, so follow the instructions and don’t overfill it.

The Details: 1.7 pounds | 6.8 x 5.5 x 7 inches | 8.1-ounce tank | 9.2-foot cord | 1 steam setting | 15-minute steam time per fill

Best Budget

Bear travel steamer.

You can’t beat this price for anyone needing a portable, effective steamer.

This steamer does not have a steam lock feature.

Despite having only one setting, this steamer removes wrinkles with just a few passes, even on delicate fabrics, though not as powerfully as some of the other steamers on this list. It heats up quickly, within 10-15 seconds, and the consistent steam output ensures efficient wrinkle removal without sputtering. The lightweight and compact design made it easy to pack in a small, already-stuffed weekender bag. While the small water tank requires frequent refilling, the steamer's portability and performance make it a fantastic value at $20. Although it lacks a continuous steam setting and requires holding the button down, these are minor trade-offs for its impressive price, results, and convenience.

The Details: 1.45 pounds | 8.4 x 6 x 3 inches | 4.05-ounce tank | 6-foot cord | 1 steam setting | 10-15-minute steam time per fill

Other Travel Steamers We Liked

One additional travel steamer we tested couldn’t quite earn a spot on our list due to minor issues but still had notable features that may meet the needs of some travelers.

Rowenta Steamer : This steamer is heavier than it appears, and while it fit into a carry-on, its size — reminiscent of an old-fashioned hair dryer — makes it a better fit for a checked suitcase or larger carry-on. Despite its weight, it heats up impressively fast and removes wrinkles efficiently, though the tiny water tank limits it to steaming one garment at a time.

Our T+L team tested eight travel steamers in everyday scenarios to assess portability, ease of use, performance, durability, and value. We assessed each steamer's weight and how it fit into various travel bags, from personal items to checked suitcases, to determine its portability. We gauged ease of use by how simple it was to fill the water tank, maneuver the steamer, and adjust settings if available.

Performance tests focused on how quickly the steamer heated up, the effectiveness of the steam in removing wrinkles, and how long a single tank of water lasted. We noted any issues with sputtering or leaking during use. For durability, we examined the quality of materials and any signs of wear after extensive testing. Lastly, we evaluated each steamer's value for money, comparing its price against its performance and quality to determine if the cost is justified.

We retested four steamers (from Electrolux, HiLife, Rowenta, and Bear) in our New York City lab to directly compare them against each other and to better assess the most appropriate categories for those products. For that lab test, we prepacked a selection of clothing overnight as messily as we could to make the garments as wrinkled as possible, including a blazer, trousers, a button-down shirt, and a long dress. We steamed a different set of wrinkled clothing with each steamer to note what made each one stand out among the pack.

Our ongoing plan includes further testing over six months to track each steamer’s long-term performance and durability. We’ll continue to document portability, practicality, and overall reliability, updating our findings as necessary.

Tips for Buying a Travel Steamer

Prioritize portability.

A compact steamer is ideal for carry-ons or personal items, but remember that smaller sizes often mean smaller water tanks, which may require more frequent refills. Balancing portability with functionality is key for a smooth travel experience. Ensure the steamer fits comfortably into your preferred travel bags, whether it’s a carry-on, weekender, or checked suitcase. A lightweight steamer will be easier to handle and pack, making it a more convenient option for frequent travelers.

Think about types of garments you typically steam

If you frequently steam thicker fabrics like blazers, look for a steamer with higher power or steam output. For those packing a variety of outfits, including silk, cotton, linen, and denim, a steamer with multiple steam settings will offer the versatility needed to handle different materials effectively.

Look for extra features and attachments

Some, but not all, steamers come with additional features like a creaser, built-in irons, or lint removers. Special attachments can enhance versatility and functionality, helping you tackle a range of fabrics and garment types more efficiently. Make sure you know what your steamer includes when you buy it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Start by filling the steamer's water tank. Most travel steamers have a removable tank or a small opening for easy filling. Plug in the steamer and turn it on. Allow it to heat up; this usually takes a minute or two. Some models will have an indicator light or sound to signal when it's ready.

Hold the steamer upright and press the steam button to start the flow of steam. Gently move the steamer over the wrinkled areas of your garment, either holding the fabric taut or steaming it while it hangs. Some models allow you to use the steamer while the garment is flat on a surface.

After use, turn off and unplug the steamer. Empty any remaining water from the tank, and let it cool down before storing.

The primary difference between a steamer and an iron is each tool’s method of wrinkle removal. A steamer uses hot steam, which helps to smooth out wrinkles without direct contact. In contrast, an iron uses direct heat and pressure to press wrinkles out of clothing. It requires physical contact with the fabric, which can sometimes lead to burns or shiny spots if not used carefully. While irons can provide a crisp, pressed look, steamers are often quicker and gentler, making them suitable for a wider range of fabrics and easier to use on items that are hanging.

Yes, you can generally bring a travel steamer on an airplane or cruise ship, but there are a few considerations to keep in mind. For airplanes, most airlines allow travel-size steamers in carry-on or checked luggage, but remember to empty out the water tank to avoid any issues at security. On cruise ships, steamers are usually permitted in your cabin, but it's a good idea to confirm with the cruise line before your trip because some ships have specific policies or restrictions on electrical appliances. Even when flying, checking with your transportation provider is always a good idea.

Always confirm the voltage specifications of your steamer before traveling, and consider investing in a universal adapter and voltage converter if needed to ensure your steamer functions properly abroad. Most travel steamers operate on 110/120V — including all items on this list — which is standard in the U.S. and some other countries. If you’re traveling to a country with a different voltage standard, such as 220/240V, you’ll need a voltage converter to use your steamer safely.

Even the most seasoned travelers open their suitcase after landing and find themselves with a daunting task ahead: deciding if their wrinkled clothes can get by with a thorough shake out or if reinforcements are needed. Of course, most hotel rooms are equipped with irons, but the task of setting up the ironing board and fitting each article of clothing just right can feel overwhelming. Not to mention, some pieces are too delicate for harsh heat. But is it easy to travel with a clothing steamer instead?

When I set out to find the best travel steamer a few years ago, I admit, I was hesitant about such a practical item taking up precious carry-on space. But when traveling as a family of four, as I often do, an ironing board set-up can quickly become a catch-all for toys, shopping bags, or electronics and simply gets in the way. Since I began testing these steamers, it’s rare I leave home without one.

Of the 13 steamers I've tested, my favorite models have one thing in common: a metal soleplate, allowing you to touch the steamer to the clothing to smooth out tricky spots. While steamers are mostly celebrated for their ability to get the wrinkles out, they also kill 99 percent of bacteria. Important to note, most steamers come with the recommendation of distilled water to keep the sediment buildup at bay, which I did not use as most of us don’t have easy access to it when we travel.

This article has been updated with new information since its original publish date.

My top picks:

Best overall steamer, best lightweight steamer, best long-lasting steamer, best foldable steamer, best steamer for international travel.

  • Most leakproof steamer

Best two-in-one steamer

How i tested:.

Each steamer has been tested on jeans, khakis, T-shirts , button-down shirts , linens, blouses, and jackets based on the following criteria:

  • Size/packability : Does it fit into a weekender or carry-on?
  • Power/efficiency: Is it faster and easier than setting up and using the hotel iron? Or at least just as good?
  • Water capacity: How many times do you have to refill the reservoir to steam an entire outfit?
  • Leakproof: Will you be late to dinner while waiting for the wet spots to dry?
  • Durability/longevity : Is the quality going to withstand enough trips to make the steamer worth packing and purchasing?

Can I travel with a portable steamer?

Most travel steamers will fit into a carry-on and can go through TSA without any issues; just make sure any remaining liquid from the reservoir has been emptied before getting to the airport.

Is a portable steamer worth it?

If you are going to a formal event or know you’re packing clothes that are famous for wrinkling, then yes, it's worth adding to your suitcase. A new perk I’ve recently come to love about steamers is I actually pack less clothing knowing I have a way to freshen up an item I want to rewear. This makes packing a simpler capsule wardrobe all the more possible. As someone who typically only uses a carry-on, I do value my space and find the steamer to be an easy item to remove should I be running short on room. Below, the six best travel steamers to pack on your next trip.

Image may contain: Appliance, Blow Dryer, Device, and Electrical Device

I have a new favorite steamer. While the Nesugar handheld steamer used to be my most-used, the Proctor Silex 2-in-1 compact garment steamer has moved into the top spot for me. It’s only seven ounces heavier than the Nesugar model and steams continuously for almost 10 minutes without needing to refill the reservoir. Plus, it works effectively on every type of garment—even jeans with stubborn wrinkles. Often we don’t know where or how many outlets our hotel or Airbnb will have, so the 10-foot cord on this steamer is much appreciated, as it allows you to move around comfortably. Surprisingly, this is also the most affordable steamer at $20. If you are someone who will only travel with a steamer for special occasions, this one is a safe choice.

Weight: 1.63 lbs. Water tank capacity : 4 oz. What I like most: Affordable, de-wrinkles all fabrics, heats up in 45 seconds, effective brush attachment Where there's room for improvement: Reservoir can be hard to completely empty

Image may contain: Appliance, Device, Electrical Device, and Blow Dryer

I've used this steamer regularly for over a year, and very much appreciate the smart design. The Nesugar portable steamer weighs less than a pound, but produces a solid stream of steam. With a small reservoir, I was surprised the water lasted for almost 10 minutes, allowing for five items to be de-wrinkled (though it was not powerful enough for jeans). There is a button to turn the steam on, but you don’t have to hold it down, which I like. The metal soleplate allows for an ironing option, which is what I ended up using to smooth out the jeans. An adjustable head not only makes the steamer compact, but gives you the option to steam at different angles. Originally, I wondered if frequent adjusting of the head would loosen the feature, but it is still going strong after countless trips. The unit also comes with a wall mount so you always have a place to hang it at home.

Weight: 12.8 oz. What I like most: Lightweight and packable, adjustable head, comes with a wall mount Where there's room for improvement: Works best on lighter fabrics

travel handheld clothes steamer

One of the more expensive steamers I tested, the Conair is definitely the winner in terms of power and functionality—a T-shirt can be good as new in less than a minute. While the steamer can blast wrinkles from jackets, you can also lower the setting for more delicate items. The Conair turbo is the only steamer I tested that had various settings to choose from. It even has a built-in creaser, if that’s your thing. Because the steamer is more powerful, it uses more water, so refills are necessary after a few items (depending on the fabric and intensity of the wrinkles, of course). The Conair Turbo would’ve taken the top spot if it were more compact for traveling (its dimensions are 13" x 8" x 6", making it a bit bulky for carry-ons). If you find yourself using an iron a lot at home, this steamer may actually be your best bet.

Weight: 3.2 lbs. Water tank capacity : 6.6 oz. What I like most: Can de-wrinkle anything, various settings to choose from, quick heat-up Where there's room for improvement: Hard to fill with its small opening, on the larger size for travel

travel handheld clothes steamer

This is by far the most aesthetically pleasing steamer I tested and ranks number two for packability. With a 30-second warm up and automatic steam (no trigger to hold), the Seekclass was off to a good start, but it did take four minutes to steam one pair of pants and I had to utilize the metal soleplate in order to get the job done. The reservoir is tiny, so I had to refill it before I could finish the pants, too. Because the hole to refill is so small, it’s also hard to get out any remaining water when you’re ready to pack up the unit. Knowing this, it’s smart to let the steamer dry out at your earliest convenience to keep any build-up from forming.

Weight: 1.4 pounds Water tank capacity : 3.5 oz. What I like most: Its foldable handle is great for travel, metal soleplate, quick heat-up Where there's room for improvement: Leaks when on its side; has small, hard-to-fill reservoir; heavier material requires at least one refill

travel handheld clothes steamer

International travelers will be happy about the automatic dual voltage with this steamer. While the heat up is quick (about 20 seconds), the reservoir of the steamer is painfully hot—so be sure to only hold on to the handle. Unfortunately, the high temperature of the reservoir requires a pause between fill-ups, but you can get three items done with one tank. My favorite feature is the automatic steam from the get-go, which means your fingers get a rest from holding down the trigger button that comes with many other steamers. The main reason this steamer remains on the final list is for its appeal to those who frequently travel abroad.

Weight: 1.2 lbs. Water tank capacity : 3.4 oz. What I like most: Dual voltage, collapsible handle for travel, automatic heat-up (no power button), no trigger needed to release steam Where there's room for improvement: Cannot promptly refill reservoir because the tank gets so hot

Most leakproof

Image may contain: Blade, Weapon, Appliance, Blow Dryer, Device, Electrical Device, and Razor

I tend to gravitate toward the hybrid steamers that can also be used as an iron. The large iron plate on the Steamery Cirrus 3 is almost as efficient as a full-size iron, but I could only steam three items with one tank of water. Something that stands out with this steamer is its ability to remain leak-free. This is one of the most important features for me as I tend to travel with a busy itinerary, which means I may be steaming in a hurry and the last thing I want to do is take out a hair dryer to dissolve the wet spots left behind by the steamer. I even gave it a bit of a shake test and nothing spilled. Where this steamer falls short, honestly, is the price.

Weight : 1.8 lbs. Water tank capacity : 3 oz. What I like most: Large iron plate, completely leakproof, quick heat-up Where there's room for improvement: Expensive price point, reservoir empties after three garments

Image may contain: Device, Electrical Device, Smoke Pipe, and Appliance

Rounding out our list of the best travel steamers is this hybrid steamer/iron that comes highly recommended by senior editor Megan Spurrell . “I was drawn to the Nori steamer because of its sleek design—two-in-ones are always ideal for travel, and not needing an ironing board seemed like a plus,” Spurrell says. “I put it to the test the day of my destination wedding this past month, on both my dress and my husband's linen suit. It did get the job done, and both functions (steaming and ironing) deliver.”

The unique, compact steamer features two aluminum plates that can simultaneously iron the front and back of a garment, getting the job done in half the time. Another perk: It offers six fabric settings (polyester, silk, wool, cotton, denim, and linen)—so no matter what you pack, you can rest assured it will be wrinkle-free and free of any damage when it's time to wear.

Weight : 1.4 lbs.  Water tank capacity : 1 oz.  What I like most: Double plates, dual voltage, automatic shut-off after 10 minutes of no movement Where there's room for improvement: Its tiny reservoir means it's best reserved for smaller jobs; it can be tiring to hold while smoothing out a very crinkled shirt.

Need to look your best while you are away? Crinkled and creased clothing will not impress if you are headed to a business meeting, conference, wedding, or other occasion. A travel steamer will help you to breathe new life into rumpled clothing, while still being compact and lightweight enough to take everywhere with you.

Travel steamer

Steaming your clothes is an excellent alternative to ironing, both on vacation and at home. Conventional ironing flattens the fibers of the fabric, while steaming allows the same fibers to gently relax so that the creases drop away more naturally.

Regular size steamers offer plenty of power to let you de-crease with ease at home. They can, however, be bulky and cumbersome, making them less than practical to pack in your carry-on, and they may even need additional attachments to ensure your clothes are perfectly presented at all times.

Regular steamers have the power and capacity to steam whole outfits, but to do this, they need large water tanks that can produce a lot of steam. In contrast, travel steamers are incredibly compact and feature smaller tanks , meaning that they can be held in just 1 hand for easy de-creasing when you travel.

Of course, smaller tanks call for regular refills and a limited amount of steam power, but this is a small price to pay for easy to use, portable steam power that can be used on a variety of fabrics, for a wide range of occasions.

The other main difference between travel-size steamers and regular ones is the amount of power they can produce. A large steamer can kick out as much as 1800 watts of power, whereas travel-sized appliances might only offer between 750 to 850 watts of power.

Bottom Line: The lower the wattage, the slower the steamer, meaning that while travel appliances are super useful, they may not have the physical power to get rid of every single crease.

Travel steamer power cord

A steamer with a short cord is of little use to anybody. Likewise, cords that are too long can get in the way and hinder your steaming capabilities. Before you invest, read up on your preferred model to ensure that the cord is long enough to be useful without you risking getting caught up in it along the way.

Remember, a steamer is supposed to help you not hinder your ability to get out the door looking pristine. Somewhere around 5 to 10 feet in length should see you right .

Water Capacity

Travel steamer water capacity

Travel steamers will likely have a smaller capacity than larger, regular units. That said, they will still need to hold enough water to create enough steam to finish the job. Look for a model that has a reservoir that can hold enough for about 10 minutes of quality steaming , which should be enough to get you through a full outfit.

Size and Weight

Your portable steamer will need to be just that — portable. With this in mind, look for models that are compact enough to fit easily into your suitcase or carry-on without taking up too much of your valuable clothes storage space.

Hot Tip: A travel steamer should also be as light as possible without being flimsy, so aim for models that weigh in at 2 pounds or lighter.

Fabric Types

Some fabrics respond better to steaming than others, and some steamers are not suitable for all types of fabric. Before you buy, check that the models you are looking at can steam the creases out of your outfits and that they are also able to cope with delicate fabrics without damaging them.

Travel steamer heat

Assuming that you don’t want to spend all day hiding out in your hotel room waiting for your steamer to work, the heat-up time is an important factor. Generally speaking, the faster the water heats up, the more efficient the device is. Do your research and opt for a model that heats in 2 minutes or less.

Ease of Use

The easier your steamer is to use, the less time you will need to spend steaming. With this in mind, look for models that have clear instructions that are also easy to clean and fill. You should also consider paying extra for a portable steamer that comes complete with a filter to purify the water. This will help prevent damage to your delicates and reduce water spots or sediment.

Attachments

A fabric brush is also a useful addition to a travel steamer, as it will open up the fabric to make the steaming process more even and efficient. Other attachments to consider could be a lint brush, a creaser, or even a softening attachment, but be aware that extra attachments take up space to carry with you, and could cost extra.

Watts and Voltage

A dual-voltage steamer will be suitable for use all over the world and will offer the option to switch between 110 to 120 volts for the U.S. and 220 to 240 volts for use in Europe . If you are unable to find one that offers this feature, you will need to take a converter with you.

The wattage of the appliance relates to the amount of power it can produce. Most travel steamers have a power output of around 750 to 850 watts , which, while still useful, may not be enough to remove some of the most stubborn of creases.

Travel steamers should be super easy to use. They are more convenient than traditional steam irons, and you won’t need a flat surface to use them. How you steam your garment will depend on the exact design of your travel steamer, the type of garment you are steaming, and the amount of space available.

Here are some general tips on how to use a steamer:

  • Start by hanging your garment up , ideally against a solid surface that can add resistance. Hang it at a height that is comfortable for you and one that won’t mean you have to hurt your back or bend and twist while you are steaming.
  • Before you start steaming, be sure to check the labels in the garment. Some fabrics do not respond well to steam, and trying to remove creases could result in you ruining them. Check before you begin as those that can’t be steamed may need to be taken to the dry cleaner instead.
  • Pull and stretch the garment with your free hand , taking care not to let the steam burn you as you hold it.
  • When it comes to steaming, start by moving the appliance in a downward motion, keeping the steamer upright  and aligned at all times. Hold the plate close to the garment to maximize the power of the steam.
  • For more delicate fabrics, you may want to keep the steamer at least an inch away from the fabric, while thicker, heavier items may need to be steamed from both sides.
  • If you are having trouble with stubborn collars or cuffs, you may want to use your hand to give them extra shape and support.
  • When you have finished steaming, be sure to tip out any remaining water in the tank and let your steamer cool down before packing it away again.

The Best Clothing Steamers

Zoe Vanderweide

By Zoe Vanderweide

Zoe Vanderweide is a writer focused on style and accessories. She has personally tested nearly 300 bags, jeans, bras, shoes, and more.

Armed with a good clothing steamer, you can de-rumple creased, tired-looking duds in minutes—without the hassle of pulling out an ironing board. A steamer smooths without scorching, so it’s the best tool for delicate fabrics like silk and wool. And its utility goes well beyond garment care—it can easily freshen up bedding, drapes, and upholstery, too.

We’ve tested dozens of steamers since 2016, and our all-around favorite is the midsize, handheld Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Fabric Steamer (GS59X) . Its powerful blasts of steam, ability to adjust to different materials, and user-friendliness make it ideally suited for regular household use. We also recommend a compact, well-priced travel steamer , as well as a pricey, pro-level floor-standing steamer that’s made for marathon steaming sessions.

Everything we recommend

travel handheld clothes steamer

Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Fabric Steamer (GS59X)

Best powerful everyday steamer.

This midsize handheld steamer has five settings to handle different fabrics, and it relaxes wrinkles fast without spitting any water. It’s pleasant to use, but refilling the water tank is a bit tricky.

Buying Options

Best for travel.

travel handheld clothes steamer

Beautural Portable Clothes Steamer

A compact travel steamer that’s great for occasional use.

This lightweight, foldable steamer is portable and well priced—and unlike many other travel steamers, it doesn’t leak (at any angle). But it lacks the de-wrinkling power of our larger picks, and its water tank provides only nine minutes of steaming time, so it’s best for smaller jobs.

Best for high-volume steaming

travel handheld clothes steamer

Reliable Vivio 500 GC Professional Garment Steamer

A heavy-duty model for marathon steaming sessions.

For serious steamers, this pricey floor-standing model makes big jobs a lot more enjoyable. It has a huge water tank, and its lightweight steam head is far comfier to use than a handheld steamer, even for extended periods.

The 1875-watt Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Fabric Steamer (GS59X) is the best midsize handheld steamer we’ve ever tested; it’s the one we think most folks would be happy keeping around as their everyday steamer. The Conair steamer produces the most powerful steam of any model in its category that we’ve tried, melting wrinkles with ease, and it doesn’t spit water in the process (a rarity). It heats up in just 40 seconds, delivers a respectable 15 to 20 minutes of continuous steam, and works equally well vertically or horizontally.

The Conair steamer is highly adjustable. Its five steam settings offer varying levels of intensity to safely smooth different materials, from delicate silks to sturdy cotton twills. For especially heavy creases, it has a heat-conductive soleplate (the ceramic-coated aluminum head of the device) that works like a small iron, gliding over fabrics.

Weighing around 2.75 pounds with a full water tank, the Conair steamer is one of the lighter, more comfortable midsize steamers we’ve used—though (like any handheld model) it can start to feel heavy during longer sessions. Its 7.3-ounce water tank was big enough to get us through our steaming jobs, but we did find it a bit tricky to fill, due to its tiny opening.

Note: If this steamer is unavailable, the 1550-watt Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Fabric Steamer (GS38R) —a former pick in this guide—is an extremely similar model. It’s not quite as powerful as our current pick, and it has two (rather than five) steam settings, but it’s still a solid option.

We hated every travel-size steamer we tested, with the exception of the Beautural Portable Clothes Steamer . It’s everything a portable steamer should be: super-packable (thanks to a fold-up design), decently priced, and hearty enough to knock out small jobs. It even has some unexpected extras, including a heat-conductive ceramic soleplate (on its head) that functions like a small iron and a removable water tank (unusual in this category) that makes mid-job refills easier. Just note that while the Beautural is certainly suitcase-ready, it’s not dual-voltage; it will work only in 120-V outlets, which are commonly found in North America (but not overseas).

This steamer heats up in just 30 seconds; its small (5-ounce) water tank provides about nine minutes of continual steam. The stream of steam it produces is adequate—powerful enough to de-rumple light- to mid-weight fabrics in minutes—but it’s not as hot or targeted as that of our other picks. The Beautural Portable was the only travel steamer we tested that didn’t drip or leak, no matter what direction we turned it.

It’s easy to use and weighs just 1.5 pounds when filled with water, and its (hair dryer-like) handle feels comfortable to grip. In order to make the unit produce steam, you must continuously hold down a button on its handle; though this feature saves precious water (and can prevent accidental burns), it might be a nuisance for some people.

If you do a lot of steaming, or you find midsize handheld models too heavy or uncomfortable to use, the Reliable Vivio 500 GC Professional Garment Steamer could be for you. This floor-standing model is nearly 6 feet tall, and it has a lightweight steam head that’s attached by a flexible hose to a rolling base about the size of a canister vacuum.

The steamer takes around 90 seconds to heat up; once it gets going, its 1-gallon water tank will last through just about any job. The Reliable steamer’s steam head works vertically or horizontally, delivering strong, splutter-free clouds of steam—and it’s much lighter and a lot more comfortable to use for extended sessions than a handheld steamer.

The Reliable steamer does not have a heat-conductive soleplate to function as an iron (though, for around $20 more, the similar Reliable Vivio 550GC model does).

This steamer is pricey—it costs nearly four times as much as our everyday steamer pick, the Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Fabric Steamer —and it requires storage space. But if you want to steam like a pro, it may be a sound investment.

The research

Why you should trust us, who this is for, how we picked and tested, our favorite everyday steamer: conair turbo extremesteam handheld fabric steamer (gs59x), a compact, well-priced travel-size steamer: beautural portable clothes steamer, a pro-level floor-standing model for steaming marathons: reliable vivio 500 gc professional garment steamer, other good steamers, the competition.

I’m a senior staff writer at Wirecutter covering style and accessories. I’ve written our guides to laundry aids , women’s jeans , and white T-shirts , among others. In the process, I’ve spent a great deal of time wearing, washing, styling, and generally fussing over clothes. I’m also a type-A neatnik who considers a marathon garment-steaming session the ideal way to spend an evening in.

For this guide:

  • I built on the reporting of Wirecutter textile expert Jackie Reeve, who in tested 17 steamers in 2019 for a previous version of this guide.
  • To help determine which steamers to test for the 2024 update of this guide, I researched multiple online roundups and other editorial sources, and I sifted through hundreds of customer reviews.
  • I personally spent over eight hours testing an additional six steamers, blasting through a household’s-worth of wrinkles in the process.
  • Like all Wirecutter journalists, I review and test products with complete editorial independence. I’m never made aware of any business implications of my editorial recommendations. Read more about our editorial standards .

A steamer can be a solid addition to just about any laundry arsenal, whether you own a lot of delicate fabrics or you just need to freshen up the occasional piece.

For some people, it might even be a replacement for an iron.

While many fussier textiles can be safely washed at home , not all of them should be ironed, since an iron can scorch or crush delicate fibers. A steamer, on the other hand, is gentle enough to give fabrics like silk, velvet, wool, cashmere, and heat-sensitive synthetics a professionally polished look.

Our steamer picks also work on thicker materials, including heavier cotton fabrics (though the end result is a more casually put-together look than a crisp, pressed one). If you want to create sharp pleats or creases, an iron is the better tool.

Even if you don’t have a closetful of delicate duds, a steamer can still come in handy. It’s great for de-wrinkling curtains and drapes without having to take them down. You can use it to freshen up pillows, mattresses, and upholstery, too: Steam helps banish odors and kill germs, dust mites, and even bed bugs .

For this guide, we tested three basic types of steamers:

  • Travel-size models: The biggest draw of travel-size steamers is their portability; they are lightweight, portable, and usually inexpensive. They’re typically less powerful, and they only hold a few ounces of water, so they’re best for packing in a suitcase or for small jobs.
  • Midsize models: A good choice for moderate to regular household use, midsize handheld steamers offer a good balance of steaming power, tank capacity, and convenience. Keep in mind that these models tend to feel heavy after several minutes of use.
  • Floor-standing models: These pro-style models have large water tanks (on wheels), enabling extended sessions without running dry. And their lightweight steam heads make them far more comfortable than handheld steamers to use for longer stretches. But they take up lots of storage space, and they’re pricey. So they’re worth it only if you do a lot of steaming, or if you find handheld steamers too onerous.

In 2019, senior staff writer Jackie Reeve tested 17 steamer models, and in 2024, I tested another six.

We tried each steamer on a variety of items, including silk dresses, button-up shirts, cotton sheets, and heavy drapes, using them vertically (on clothes hung from hangers) and horizontally (on garments laid flat). We also measured the lengths of the steamers’ extension cords, the capacities of their water tanks, and their weights when filled.

Throughout, we focused on finding steamers that could meet the following criteria:

Effective: We looked for steamers that could quickly banish wrinkles with strong, targeted bursts of hot steam. Models that have metal or ceramic soleplates are especially nice, since they can be used like an iron to flatten heavier wrinkles.

Non-leaking: A wet spot can spoil a delicate fabric. More seriously, dribbling water is a safety hazard with a plugged-in appliance—and steamers that spit boiling water may cause burns. We looked for steamers that didn’t leak or sputter, no matter which way we held them (horizontally or vertically).

Comfortable to use: We favored models that are relatively lightweight (midsize handheld steamers, in particular, tend to feel heavy pretty fast). We also wanted steamers that are comfortable to hold and don’t get too hot to the touch. And we preferred models that can be used vertically and horizontally, since some people find it easier to steam on a flat surface. We also looked for steamers that have longer power cords, which are helpful if you’re tall or far from an outlet.

Intuitive: All of our picks have simple, easy-to-understand controls. We also liked steamers that could be put on standby mode, conserving steam and reducing the likelihood of accidental burns.

Well-designed water tanks: Bigger water tanks mean longer steam times and less-frequent refills. We additionally considered how easy each water tank was to fill and whether it was detachable (allowing for easier refills).

Warranty protection: There are no guarantees in the steaming game; even the best steamers conk out. (Tip: Unless the instruction manual specifies otherwise, use distilled water in your steamer to extend its lifespan.) We considered models with solid warranties only.

A Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Fabric Steamer standing up on its handle.

The Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Fabric Steamer (GS59X) is one smooth operator. Our favorite everyday steamer, it’s the most efficient and effective midsize handheld model we’ve found. It heats up quickly, vanquishes wrinkles with five steam settings (and an iron-like soleplate), and leaves no evidence (like wet spots) behind. Plus, this workhorse is more pleasant to hold than many other midsize steamers—it doesn’t feel too heavy—and it can be used horizontally or vertically.

Note: In previous versions of this guide, our top pick was the Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Fabric Steamer (GS38R) . The models are very similar, but the Conair GS59X is a bit more powerful and adjustable, giving it the edge. Still, if the GS59X is not available, the GS38R is a nice option.

It’s a smoothing powerhouse. The Conair GS59X steamer is the fastest, most powerful midsize steamer we’ve tested, offering the highest wattage (1875 watts) by far. Higher wattage translates to quicker heating time—it takes just 40 seconds for the unit to heat up (a light indicates when it’s ready to use). It also translates to hotter, stronger steam, which is evenly distributed via two long openings. (Conair claims that if used correctly, this steamer can kill bedbugs and dust mites on fabric, as well as 99.9% of bacteria.)

I used the Conair GS59X in a vertical position to steam hanging garments; it melted wrinkles out of a silk dress in under a minute. On a heavyweight cotton button-up, it worked better horizontally. Its ceramic-coated aluminum soleplate (the smooth, heat-conductive surface of the steam head, which can glide over fabric like an iron) flattened the stubborn folds at the bottom hem. Either way, the steamer didn’t spit or splutter like many others.

It’s comfortable to hold and user-friendly. This steamer is comfortable to grip, and in testing, no part of the device—aside from the soleplate, don’t touch this!—ever felt too hot. Its generous, approximately 9-foot cord allows for plenty of mobility during steaming, and this was especially helpful when tackling tall curtains.

Weighing about 2.75 pounds when the water tank is full, the Conair steamer is on the lighter side for a midsize model. (We tested steamers in this category ranging from 2 pounds up to a whopping 5.) Even with this steamer’s relatively modest weight, it will begin to feel like a workout if you’re using it for a long time—as would be the case with any handheld steamer. (If you’re a regular steaming marathoner, our pro-level pick, the floor-standing Reliable Vivio 500 GC Professional Garment Steamer , might be a better fit.)

Luckily, the Conair steamer makes quick work of wrinkles. When you need a break, it stands stably on its own, and it can be put on standby mode, stopping the steam with the press of a button. (This not only saves water but also helps to prevent accidental burns.)

It’s especially versatile. With five steam settings—the different levels of intensity suit a range of fabrics—the Conair steamer is the most adjustable midsize model we tested. On its lowest setting, it pampers fine silk with a gentle mist; at full steam, it wrestles heavy creases from denim and thick flannel.

The steamer comes with a three-in-one attachment; it’s moderately useful, though not necessary. It includes a silicone bar for pulling fabrics taut, a spacer for protecting fragile textiles and trims, and a bristle brush that helps steam penetrate thicker materials. There’s also a clip-style creaser tool built into the steamer head, but it’s fiddly and awkward to use, and it didn’t provide great results. (If you have your heart set on sharp pleats, you’re better off with one of the picks from our guide to the best irons .)

A closeup of the buttons on the handle of the The Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Fabric Steamer.

Its water tank isn’t big, but it gets the job done. The water tank on this steamer has a 7.3-ounce capacity, which is relatively small for a midsize steamer. Nevertheless, it produced about 15 minutes of continuous steam with the unit on the second-highest setting—enough to de-rumple a dress, a jacket, a pair of slacks, and three heavily wrinkled cotton button-downs, with water to spare. (With the unit on the lowest setting, the tank provides about 20 minutes of consecutive steaming time.)

If you do run out of water mid-job, it’s no biggie. Just unplug the steamer (for safety), slide out the tank to refill it, and click it back into place.

One gripe: The hole on the top of the tank is too small—about the size of an M&M—so it’s challenging to fill from a gallon jug of distilled water. (Distilled water prevents mineral build-up and is recommended for most steamers.) Using a funnel can help achieve a precise pour (and prevent spills), but it’s a hassle.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

  • The Conair steamer has the shortest warranty period (one year) of our picks; that said, it’s pretty standard for a midsize model.
  • Though it’s relatively light for a midsize steamer (2.75 pounds when full), some people may find that it’s too heavy for prolonged use.
  • Compared with other midsize steamers, the Conair steamer has a smaller-than-average water tank (7.3 ounces). But it still produced 15 to 20 minutes of steam in testing (and it worked faster than the competition, too).
  • The water tank has a small opening, making it tricky to fill from a 1-gallon jug of distilled water.
  • Weight: 2.75 pounds with a full water tank
  • Dimensions: 8 by 5.6 by 13.6 inches (LWH)
  • Water-tank capacity: 7.3 ounces
  • Steaming time: 15 to 20 minutes (per tank), depending on setting
  • Cord length: 9 feet
  • Warranty: one year

The Beautural Portable Clothes Steamer resting on it's back end.

Compact, travel-size steamers aren’t the most impressive examples of modern engineering. Almost every one we’ve tested has been a weak, leaky dud. But the Beautural Portable Clothes Steamer is the exception. Although it’s not as powerful or adjustable as our other two steamer picks, it manages to tick the hoped-for boxes in this category: It’s lightweight, portable, and reasonably priced, and it handily tackles smaller jobs. It even has a heat-conductive soleplate, so you can use it like a mini-iron in a pinch. And it works horizontally as well as vertically—a hard-to-find quality in a travel-size steamer.

It’s extremely packable. Similar in shape to a travel hair dryer, the Beautural steamer has a steam nozzle that folds down to make the unit a compact 8.5 by 3 by 5 inches. It’s also one of the lightest steamers we found, weighing just 1.3 pounds when the water tank is empty (and 1.5 pounds when full).

There are trade-offs. The small (5-ounce) tank produces only nine minutes of steam—enough to get through a couple of outfits—before needing a refill, so it’s not well suited for bigger jobs. Luckily, the water tank is removable (the Beautural steamer is the only travel-size model we tested that had this feature), so mid-job refills are much easier.

Take note that the Beautural steamer is not dual voltage; it’s suitable only for use in 120 V outlets (uncommon in countries outside of North America).

It’s surprisingly effective. It takes just 30 seconds for this 1000-watt steamer to warm up; an indicator light on top of the steam nozzle switches off when the unit is ready. The Beautural steamer emits strong, steady clouds of steam that melt through wrinkles on light- and mid-weight fabrics. It’s less impressive than our other (larger, pricier) picks—the steam isn’t as targeted or powerful, and it takes longer to relax set-in wrinkles. But its performance is unexpectedly smooth.

This steamer also has a wide, heat-conductive ceramic soleplate (unusual for a travel-size model), which can be used like a steam iron to press wrinkles out of heavier fabrics. Compared with the soleplate on our Conair pick , this one is not as effective at flattening the most stubborn creases, but it effortlessly smoothed wrinkles out of cotton bedsheets.

It’s comfortable to use. Thanks to the Beautural steamer’s light weight, it’s a breeze to handle (no “arm day” vibes here). Its small, hair dryer–like design makes it comfy to hold and easy to maneuver—I was able to reach all areas of my hanging and laid-flat garments without a fuss. And its relatively long, 8-foot cord provides adequate mobility.

It’s leak- and spill-proof, even when rotated 360 degrees. Every other travel-size steamer I tested hissed, sputtered, and spilled water. The Beautural steamer didn’t leak one bit, no matter which way it was being held, so it’s possible to steam up, down, and sideways.

The Beautural Portable Clothes Steamer folded into itself.

It has a button you have to keep pressed to create steam. The Beautural steamer won’t produce steam unless you continuously press a button on its handle. Some people might like this feature; taking your finger off the button effectively puts the steamer into standby mode, saving water (and refill trips). It can also prevent accidental burns, since the steamer will never be left running—and you can place it on its side during breaks.

But keeping the button pressed as you’re steaming does require a bit of manual strength and dexterity, so some may find this challenging or just plain annoying.

  • The Beautural steamer’s small, 5-ounce water tank provides only nine minutes of continuous steam—enough to get through a couple of outfits.
  • It works only in 120 V outlets (a bummer for a travel steamer).
  • This steamer can’t match the de-wrinkling prowess of our other picks. But it handily bested other travel-size competitors.
  • To produce steam, you must continuously hold down a button, which requires some manual strength/dexterity.
  • Weight: 1.5 pounds with a full tank
  • Dimensions: 6.7 by 3 by 9 inches (LWH, unfolded); 8.5 by 3 by 5 inches (LWH, folded)
  • Water-tank capacity: 5 ounces
  • Steam time: nine minutes (per tank)
  • Cord length: 8 feet
  • Warranty: two years

The Reliable Vivio 500 GC Professional Garment Steamer resting on its base.

Heavy-duty steaming (that is, steaming that involves particularly lengthy or frequent sessions) calls for equally serious equipment. The Reliable Vivio 500 GC Professional Garment Steamer is just that: a pricey, pro-quality floor-standing steamer that’s capable of turning a slog into a much-more-enjoyable ritual. This steamer’s lightweight head—attached to a flexible hose—is comfortable to use for long periods of time, and its 1-gallon water tank makes running out of steam all but impossible. Given its steep price and large size, the Reliable steamer is best suited for folks who are committed to the steaming lifestyle.

Note: This steamer is covered by a three-year warranty—the longest of any of our picks; this is a nice safety net, considering the hefty price tag.

It’s large and in charge. Standing nearly 6 feet tall and weighing over 21 pounds when the water tank is full, the Reliable steamer is no lightweight. Thankfully, its wheeled base (which houses the large water tank and 1,300-watt brass heating element) rolls smoothly over hard floors.

As with all floor-standing models, with the Reliable model, steam flows from the tank through a vacuum-like hose, emerging from a steam head. When it’s not in use, the head rests atop an attached aluminum pole, which is equipped with a hook for a removable clothes hanger.

This steamer requires a bit more first-time assembly than other floor-standing models we tested—it took about 10 minutes (and a screwdriver) to put together. And due to its size, it’s more of a challenge to store than our other picks.

It’s a dream to steam with. There’s a reason this is the steamer we keep at Wirecutter headquarters, relying on it to spiff up garments and textiles for our photo shoots. The Reliable steamer makes it possible to hum through nearly 20 pairs of jeans in one go—without breaking a sweat.

The steamer head, attached to a flexible, fabric-covered hose, is easy to maneuver and comfortable to hold. And it’s notably light: It weighs under half a pound, compared with the 2- to 5-pound weights of most handheld steamers. (The difference adds up fast when your arm is raised.) And the unit’s built-in hanger hook keeps clothing steady and well positioned.

The Reliable steamer’s 7.4-foot power cord is shorter than those on our other picks, but it’s never hindered us. (A long cord is less important on a floor-standing steamer, since it has a long hose and built-in hanger.)

A person holding the Reliable Vivio 500 GC Professional Garment Steamer with their arm outstretched.

It de-wrinkles without dripping. The Reliable steamer heats up in about 90 seconds and delivers a steady flow of steam. It’s just as quick and effective as our main Conair steamer pick at releasing most wrinkles, and it takes a lot less muscle to do the same job.

You can’t adjust the intensity of the steam—it’s invariably strong—but it’s never damaged a delicate item. And it was the only floor-standing steamer we tested that didn’t spit any water, whether used vertically (on hanging garments) or horizontally (on items laid flat).

This steamer comes with a bristle attachment, for helping steam to penetrate thicker fibers; gentle brushing also protects the nap (or raised surface) of fabrics like corduroy and velvet. In testing, we found the brush useful for heavier materials, but after about a year, we noticed that the bristles on ours had curled and warped (likely from exposure to high heat).

Unlike our other two picks, this steamer does not have a heat-conductive soleplate that works like an iron on extra-tough wrinkles. The Reliable steamer’s PVC (polyvinyl chloride) head can be placed directly on fabrics to gently smooth them, but the plastic doesn’t get as hot as a ceramic or metal soleplate, so it won’t deliver the same crisply pressed effect.

If this ironing feature is important to you, the Reliable Vivio 550GC is a similar model that comes with a heat-conductive aluminum steam head (it’s around $20 more).

Its water tank seems bottomless. The Reliable steamer’s gallon-size water tank is the largest of any steamer model we’ve ever tested; it can produce about two hours of continuous steam.

The tank has a screw-on cap and wide opening that’s easy to refill, whether from a faucet or a 1-gallon jug of distilled water. (Distilled water is recommended for most steamers, to prevent mineral build-up.) There’s no need to change the tank after each use, so once the Reliable steamer is filled up, it’s quick to wheel out and get to work.

  • It’s pricey.
  • It’s large and requires storage space.
  • Some assembly (and a screwdriver) is required for first-time setup.
  • Unlike our other two picks, this steamer doesn’t have a heat-conductive soleplate that works like an iron; Reliable does make a similar model with that feature , for $20 more.
  • Weight: 22 pounds with full tank
  • Dimensions: 16.5 by 11.5 by 70 inches (LWH)
  • Water-tank capacity: 1 gallon
  • Steaming time: two hours (per tank)
  • Cord Length: 7.4 feet
  • Warranty: three years

If you want a terrific everyday handheld steamer (and our top pick is out of stock): The Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Fabric Steamer (GS38R) , a former pick in this guide, is extremely similar—in both looks and functionality—to our current pick, the Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam GS59X . Both midsize models are comfortable to operate, heat up in under a minute, produce strong blasts of hot steam, and can be held horizontally or vertically without any spills. There are a few differences. The 1550-watt GS38R isn’t as powerful as our 1875-watt pick, so it’s not quite as efficient at de-wrinkling. Its soleplate is aluminum (rather than ceramic-coated), and it has one long slit for dispensing steam, compared with two on the GS59X steamer. And our pick has five steam settings, but this model has two, so you can’t dial the steam way down for the most delicate fabrics. Still, if the GS59X is unavailable, or if you see a particularly great deal on the GS38R, it’s a solid option.

This is not a comprehensive list of everything we tested in previous iterations of this guide, just what’s still available.

Midsize handheld steamers

The Beautural 1200-Watt Steamer for Clothes smoothed wrinkles on thin silk but struggled with thicker cotton, and it spit some water onto fabrics.

We had to push the power button several times to get the Black+Decker Advanced Handheld Steamer (HGS200) to work, and it was the slowest steamer to heat up in testing. It didn’t produce much steam, and it made alarming noises, so we unplugged it after a few minutes.

At first, we really liked the sleek Electrolux Portable Handheld Garment Steamer . It’s well balanced, it de-wrinkles stuff quickly, and its large (10-ounce) water tank is easy to fill. Unfortunately, the steamer head—which touches your hand as you’re holding the unit—is not well insulated, and it got so uncomfortably hot that we were concerned about whether it was safe.

The Sunbeam Power Steam Handheld Steamer was notably light and comfortable (just 2 pounds when the water tank is full). But it produced inconsistent steam, and it leaked when we used it horizontally.

In past years, we tested and dismissed other handheld steamers, including the Jiffy Esteam Personal Hand Held Steamer .

Travel-size steamers

The Conair CompleteSteam Hand Held Fabric Steamer (GS2X) leaked when it was turned horizontally. The HiLife Steamer for Clothes and the URPOWER Handheld Garment Steamer are not designed for horizontal use, but they leaked when we operated them vertically. Pass.

The much-hyped Nori Press —a steamer/iron combo that looks like a giant hair straightener—is certainly pretty. Alas, as we discovered, it’s uncomfortable to use and poorly designed for its purpose. Plus, the water tank is comically tiny, so frequent refills are required—and it spat water.

In previous years we also tested and dismissed other travel steamers, including the Conair Travel Smart and the Pure Enrichment PureSteam Portable Fabric Steamer .

Floor-standing steamers

Our previous floor-standing steamer pick, the J-2000 Jiffy Garment Steamer , has a simple design that made it intuitive to use, and it emitted strong steam. Sadly, when we tried to roll the Jiffy’s stiff wheels across the floor, water poured out of the base, dousing the cord and plug.

The Pure Enrichment Pure Steam XL Standing Steamer costs under $100; too bad it had a small water tank and spat water. The PurSteam Full Size Garment Fabric Steamer (which has a dial to control the force of the steam—a nice, rare feature) leaked on our fabrics, and its hose felt stiff until it warmed up.

In previous years, we tested and dismissed other floor-standing steamers, including the Conair Ultimate Fabric Steamer (GS28) and the Steamfast SF-510 Fabric Steamer .

The best travel steamers to keep your clothes wrinkle-free

Many travel steamers weigh less than two pounds and come with automatic shut-off features for safety.

You could spend hours neatly folding your clothes into packing cubes , but no level of preparation will perfectly stop your evening pants and dress shirts from developing a few creases along the way. While many hotels come with some iron or steamer, it may be easier to bring your own — especially if you are traveling for a wedding or special event — as you never know how hot an iron or steamer may get or how it will work on your clothing .

To help you find the best ones on the market, we consulted travel experts and NBC Select staffers about their favorite options.

The best travel steamers in 2024.

To help you find the best travel steamers for your next trip, we took into consideration expert recommendations, staff picks and highly rated options that will fit in your luggage while traveling.

Steamery Cirrus 3 Iron Steamer

Steamery Cirrus 3 Iron Steamer

Steamery’s Cirrus 3 is a personal favorite, as it removes wrinkles and creases on my dresses within minutes. It's a hybrid iron and steamer that can eliminate any odors and bacteria from your clothing and can hold up to 90 milliliters of water in its tank, according to the brand. Its auto shut-off feature, which turns the steamer off after 30 minutes of inactivity, especially gives me peace of mind while traveling. I primarily use this steamer for cotton, linen and silk clothing. That said, you can also use it on fabrics like viscose and cashmere, but should avoid leather and suede as it may damage your clothing, according to the brand.

Capacity : 90 milliliters | Weight : 1.89 pounds

Urpower Steamer

Urpower Steamer

This travel steamer, which has a 4.3-average star rating from over 10,000 reviews, is a favorite of travel journalist and writer, Rana Good , for how quickly it works. “It gets my clothes steamed in minutes and is especially good to use with flowy materials like silk,” she says. It heats up within two minutes and has a water tank that allows for continuous steaming for up to 10 minutes, according to the brand. You can use it on your clothing, but also on drapery and table cloths — just make sure not to tilt it more than 45 degrees to avoid any spillage, according to Urpower. Plus, it has an automatic shut-off feature that kicks in if the steamer overheats or if the water level is too low, as detailed on the product page.

Capacity : 130 milliliters | Weight : 1.2 pounds

Brynnl Mini Handheld Steamer Iron

Brynnl Mini Handheld Steamer Iron

If you're looking for a mini iron steamer, consider this Brynnl option, which comes highly recommended by travel blogger and advisor, Sally Nguyen for its compact size, which she described as similar to the iPhone 14 Pro. It has a simple one-button start feature and you can use it to ease wrinkles on cotton, silk and linen fabrics, according to the brand. The pointed curved design should help you iron out corners and hard-to-reach areas around buttons and collars, according to the brand.

Capacity : around 44 milliliters | Weight : 0.66 pounds

Hilife Steamer

Hilife Steamer

This top-rated handheld steamer, which has a 4.3-star rating from more than 90,000 shoppers, can emit steam within 140 seconds and works on a variety of fabrics including chiffon, silk, wool, cotton and nylon, according to the brand. Its 240-milliliter water capacity provides up to 15 minutes of continuous steaming (the longest on our list) and its 9-foot cord provides easy access and maneuverability.

Capacity : 240 milliliters | Weight : 1.7 pounds

Perfectday Garment Steamer

PerfectDay Garment Steamer

PerfectDay Garment Steamer

This mini travel steamer is another favorite of Nguyen’s for its safety features including its automatic shut-off functionality that kicks in when it is overheating or short on water. It can store about 100 milliliters of water and can run continuously for about 10 minutes, according to the brand. The nozzle head, which has eight steam holes for rapid venting, is removable too, making it easy to pack. The 1-pound steamer also comes with a fabric brush to get any dust, dirt or debris off your clothes. And, while it’s great for removing wrinkles from your clothes, Nguyen also uses it for facials, as the steam moves in one uniform direction, which allows it to coat her face evenly. “It helps me take care of my skin when I travel as it clarifies my skin and unclog my pores,” she says.

Capacity : 100 milliliters | Weight : 1 pound

The Nori Press

The Nori Press

The Nori Press is a favorite of NBC Select editor Lindsay Schneider as it doubles as an iron and steamer and functions like a flat iron for your clothes. It comes with six fabric settings, a clamping mechanism to press your clothes and a pointed tip that can iron hard-to-reach areas like collar corners. You’ll press its two aluminum plates against the front and back of each garment to minimize creases and wrinkles.

Capacity : 29 milliliters | Weight : 1.4 pounds

How we picked the best travel steamers.

All of our picks are expert-recommended or highly rated with an average of four stars or higher and in line with our expert guidance. We also included Select staff recommendations and kept the following in mind:

  • Weight : Every travel steamer on our list weighs less than 2 pounds.
  • Attachments : Some steamers come with attachments like a brush or a lint remover. For ease while traveling, we chose steamers without any additional attachments to save you space in your carry-on or checked bag.
  • Capacity : This indicates how much water the steamer can hold. The more it holds, the longer it can continuously run. We recommended steamers that can hold up to 240 milliliters (which is about 15 minutes of steaming).

How to shop for travel steamers

Aside from looking for steamers with portable and lightweight designs to make travel easy, here’s what our experts recommended searching for while shopping:

  • Heat-up time : The faster the steamer heats up, the better, when living life on the go, according to Nguyen. We chose steamers that do so in under three minutes.
  • Size : Since every steamer weighs less than 2 pounds, it won’t add too much weight to your bags.
  • Works on different materials : A quality steamer should work on a range of different materials including linen, nylon, cotton and silk, according to Good.

Don’t let its petite size fool you. There is 1300 watts of power secreted in this sleek package and the reversible pad system allows you to choose between a lint-removing side to keep clothes looking crisp or a velvet side that's safe for all fabrics.”

Best steamer for horizontal and vertical use

Phillips steam&go, myer, $139.

Phillips Steam&Go.

First the stats: 1300 watts of power and a two year warranty. It also comes with a no-burn guarantee, a Smartflow heated plate for optimal steam flow and a brush accessory for thicker fabrics.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING

Like any electronic item, you want to be covered if things go wrong. A two-year warranty from the manufacturer - not the vendor - is standard.

Vertical stability

The steamer needs to be able to stand firmly with or without water in the reservoir and withstand accidental nudges.

A decent sized water compartment

You should be able to steam a suit or three separate items without having to dash backwards and forwards to the tap.

What are the best irons?

The best travel steamer finds the middle ground between power and portability. You want results but don’t want to take an iron on holiday. The ConAir Turbo Extreme Steam gets our vote.

What accessories should come with a travel steamer?

The idea is that you don’t need an ironing board so a hanging hook is always welcome. As is a brush attachment.

Can I bring a steamer on a plane?

Yes but like most electronics you will have to remove it from your carryon before it’s scanned. And be sure to empty the water reservoir beforehand.

What are the main differences in heating plates?

Some steam irons use a stainless steel soleplate while others use a ceramic soleplate. The latter heat up and cool down quicker.

Avoided packing your linen trousers and favourite shirts because you don't trust the iron at your hotel not to burn the creases out of them? You're not the only one.

But, if you've been staring a little too hard at the couple opposite and wondering just how they got their clothes looking so freshly pressed, the answer might come in the form of a travel steamer .

Maybe not the most exciting thing you'll throw in your suitcase but almost definitely one of the most useful, a travel steamer gives you the freedom to pack along all of the best parts of your wardrobe without worrying about removing the creases after a long journey.

A travel steamer not only helps you to save space and weight in your luggage (as well as avoid potential damage to your clothes from ironing), but it can also sanitise and deodorise your clothes, killing bacteria and eliminating odours from a suitcase that's past its best.

The best travel steamers are small enough to fit in your bag and light enough to carry around without taking up too much of your precious baggage restriction . In fact, you'll find travel steamers come in all sizes depending on the water tank capacity, the heating element and the design of the nozzle and handle.

It might go without saying but a larger steamer has a bigger capacity and can steam larger clothes without, well, running out of steam. You'll want a steamer that's powerful enough to produce enough steaming power to smooth out your clothes, and efficient enough to heat up quickly and last long. The performance and efficiency of a travel steamer depends on the wattage, the steam output, the heat-up time and the run time.

One final thing to keep in mind: wattage varies around the world, so you may want to invest in a voltage converter depending on where you're heading off to.

The Spruce / Henry Wortock

It’s an age-old question: clothes steamer or iron? As of late, traditional irons are out , and clothes steamers are in. And we get it—if you’re looking to quickly eliminate wrinkles in delicate or thin materials, steam clean a couch  or curtains, or disinfect garments, a steamer is a great choice.

We tested 28 clothing steamers in The Lab and then for six months at home, to figure out which are the best. Each steamer was tested on a silk top, dress shirt, and pair of linen pants, and evaluated on its design, wrinkle-fighting powers, portability, and value.

During testing, we learned a few things: A higher price doesn’t always mean higher quality. And it’s not unheard of for clothes steamers to spit out a few extra droplets of water as they’re warming up.

Editor's Note: This review was revised in July 2024 with testing notes after six months of using all six winners at home.

Best Overall

Electrolux garment steamer.

Trigger lock provides continuous steam

Long, 12-foot power cord

Heats up instantly

Occasionally spits water

Funnel recommended to fill reservoir

We are charmed by the Electrolux Garment Steamer’s slim and sleek appearance, comfortable grip, and overall efficiency—we found that it heats up immediately, which can’t be said about any of our other picks. After testing for six months, we found ourselves only ever reaching for this instead of an iron.

It works quickly and easily to release wrinkles in silk, cotton, polyester, and linen garments. While it took between six and nine minutes to freshen up each item (which was about average among the 28 steamers we tested), the process was smooth and straightforward and took little effort from us.

We also really enjoyed the lint brush and fabric brush attachments. The lint brush, in particular, took care of wrinkles and collected pet fur from clothes worn around a shedding dog, making this a great pick for a pet owner who wants a neat shirt.

This steamer is only four pounds but feels sturdy while in use. The 10-ounce water tank was also big enough to last through most of our testing and only required one refill in more than 20 minutes of usage, so you can expect to steam a full outfit or long dress in one go. However, the handle can get hot the longer you use it, so we recommend additional hand coverage or flipping between different settings as we found that can help.

We loved the sliding trigger lock that provides continuous steam, so you don’t have to hold the button down for the entire time you’re steaming. And the 12-foot long power cord is ideal in rooms with awkward outlet placement, or when you’re caring for curtains .

During testing, we found that the water tank has a pretty small opening. We recommend using a funnel to help fill it. As far as upkeep goes, we only use distilled water, and we let it air dry completely before storing it, which has helped prevent any mineral buildup.

Best Overall, Runner-Up

Conair extremesteam hand-held fabric steamer.

Five steam settings

Heats in under a minute

Includes silicone band, bristle brush, and delicate fabric spacer

Some water spitting

After testing it for six months, the Conair Turbo Extreme Steam Handheld Fabric Steamer has fully replaced an iron. We found that it efficiently removed all the wrinkles in all the garments we tried—even delicate dresses. The steamer has five different steam settings so you can adjust accordingly for any clothing fabric and other household items you can surprisingly clean with a steamer .

It comes with a plethora of attachments: a silicone band for tight fabric placement while steaming, bristle brush, and delicate fabric spacer that gives you extra help achieving smooth lines and getting the steam to penetrate your materials.

With a cord just over 9 feet, you also have room to stand, bend, and reach the different areas of your garments. This isn’t quite as long as the cord on our best overall pick (that comes in at 12 feet), but it’s still plenty long to go from the collars to the cuffs.

We did notice a bit of water spitting as we started using this steamer (like with many of our picks), and there was some minor leaking when this steamer wasn’t fully upright. But, once we let it heat up properly, it seemed to fix the issue.

You’ll probably want to use a funnel to fill the water tank, since the water opening is pretty small. This steamer took a bit longer (than our best overall) when it came to releasing wrinkles from the dress shirts in our lab, and has both a smaller water tank (meaning a shorter amount of time you can steam) and a shorter cord. Still, this is a great choice that’s right on the heels of our top pick.

Weight: 2 pounds | Water Tank Capacity: 7.3 ounces | Heat Time: 38 seconds | Steam Time: 15 minutes | Power Level: 1,875 watts

"We recommend using the steamer for a few minutes on lower settings before switching to the highest or turbo settings. This allows the unit to heat up properly and reduce any chance for water droplets while in use," says Melissa Brooks , Senior Director of Marketing, Garment Care at Conair.

CHI Handheld Garment Steamer

Easy to fill tank

Fabric brush attachment

Locking mechanism to keep steam on or off

Comfortable grip while in use

A bit of sputtering at the start of use

Awkward button placement

The CHI Handheld Garment Steamer for Clothes is one of the few steamers, out of 28 total that we’ve tested, that made it through the entirety of our testing without needing a tank refill, and it’s the only handheld steamer that managed this feat.

The 10.1-ounce water tank is the largest among our favorite handheld picks (although not among uprights), but it doesn’t feel overly bulky or heavy. It has a 10-foot cord which comes in right in the middle of our favorites, and is plenty long enough to handle any size garment, or bedding—we have even used this on sheets.

Another small detail we appreciate is that the manufacturer takes care to include tips and tricks in the manual, so even beginners can be sure that they’re steaming efficiently (like, it can be easier to steam pants when they’re hanging upside down by the cuffs).

Despite not being part of the online listing, there is a fabric brush attachment in the box, which helps steam pass through material, which made a big difference in the results, and made it easier and faster to get our clothes looking fresh and crisp.

As with our best overall and runner-up picks , one of the downsides to this steamer is you might experience a bit of water sputtering, so just take care while it’s in use to keep your hands away from the spout. The button that controls the steam settings is placed a bit awkwardly, too, so while the grip on this machine is overall comfortable, the setting could be accidentally bumped and switched while it’s in use.

Weight: 1.71 pounds | Water Tank Capacity: 10.1 ounces | Heat Time: 20 seconds | Steam Time: 18 minutes | Power Level: 1,600 watts

Filling Up Your Steamer

We recommend using distilled water in your steamer , so you’re not sending any minerals that might be in your tap water through your machine. This is what we used during testing, too.

Best Standing

Pure enrichment upright clothes steamer.

Sleek design with foot-operated power button

Four steam settings

Cord wrap for easy storage

Detachable tank

Small amount of water sputtering

Some minor design quirks

The sleek, versatile, full-sized Pure Enrichment PureSteam Pro Upright Clothes Steamer is a great choice if you have a bit more room in your home. The upright design features a pole, hanger, and clips that allow you to hang the garments you’re steaming, making for an easy, all-in-one steaming station. The base of the unit is also clever; it has a triangular shape that features a foot pedal to turn it on and off, keeping your hands free to steam or make adjustments.

At home, we used it weekly on pretty much everything—bedding, curtains, shirts, pants, and more. The dial on the front allows you to set the steam level to one of its four levels (level one is the gentlest, and it goes all the way up to four—specifically for suits). Our garments were steamed and looked fresh in under five minutes each, making this one of the fastest of all 28 machines we tested.

This steamer also has a detachable, 2-liter water tank (the largest among our picks!), which contributes to a whopping 60 minutes of steam time, which means you can get through multiple outfits and garments, or even an entire load of laundry. We especially like how easy it is to remove and fill the tank.

One set of wheels are on the back of the base, so you can tip the pole to roll it around as needed (although, one or two additional wheels would have made movement even easier).

A small note is that we would have also preferred some sort of indication for its readiness when turning the machine on or adjusting the setting. There is one power light, but no other indication for settings or modes. All in all, we think it's a worthy addition to your laundry room if you have the space for it.

Weight: 9.6 pounds | Water Tank Capacity: 67.6 ounces | Heat Time: 2 minutes | Steam Time: 60 minutes | Power Level: 1,500 watts

Best Large-Capacity

Jiffy fabric steamer.

Can steam for up to 90 minutes

Wheels for extra mobility

6-inch wide nozzle

A few water droplets released at start of steaming

One steam setting

The Jiffy J-2000 Floor Standing Fabric Steamer is our choice for households that do lots of steaming. It has the largest water tank of any of our picks, with a 96-ounce capacity, or three quarters of a gallon. You can steam for up to 90 minutes at a time (or until your arm gets tired, whichever comes first). After six months of testing, we found ourselves using it weekly on every fabric type.

The 6-inch wide nozzle is the widest of our list, so you can reach a wider swath of material with each stroke, and you don't need to go over each spot more than once for the steam to remove wrinkles, making this very effective and fast.

While it’s standard for upright steamers to be hardier than handheld ones, it’s worth noting that the water tank and nozzle are both larger than the other standing steamer on our list, our best standing pick . This Jiffy J-2000 is easy to fill without the added step of a funnel, and the included rod set allows you to hang garments while you steam.

The 7-foot power cord might sound short compared to our other picks, but you have 5 feet of hose for easier maneuverability (just keep an eye out for the hose when this machine is on, because it does get hot to the touch). Since it’s on wheels, the steamer is also easy to rotate as necessary—but, not too easy! It stayed in place for us when we were using it.

After switching this machine on, it takes about a minute and 30 seconds to heat up; and we did notice that a few extra droplets of water were released as we were getting started with it, but not so much that we were concerned, since this is a common occurrence.

There’s also only one steam setting, so you can't adjust based on the fabric you're steaming. Lastly, the water tank cap can be tricky to take off, so keep that in mind when opening and re-filling it. Given how large it is, you shouldn't have to do that too often though.

Weight: 15.87 pounds | Water Tank Capacity: 96 ounces | Heat Time: 1.5 minutes | Steam Time: 90 minutes | Power Level: 1,300 watts

Best Travel Steamer

Brookline steamer.

Reservoir is easy to fill

Compact design

Less effective as water level decreased

For a steamer that you can rely on for quick, on-the-go touch-ups, we like the Brookline Steamer for Clothes. Its compact size (the smallest of our picks!) and straightforward design are great for packing and travel—and for light home use, too. We especially like that the wide-mouth reservoir can be filled from the tap, so you don’t have to fuss with a funnel at your hotel sink.

The tank can hold up to 6.1 ounces of water (roughly half of a can of soda). This is the smallest water capacity of our picks, but that’s to be expected for a travel-friendly clothes steamer. The steam power lessened as the water level depleted, and when we used this at home for six months we had to be careful to keep the steamer upright to avoid sloshes—but, we were still pleased with the steamer's overall performance.

During testing, we saw the steamer take about two and a half minutes to heat up, so it’s not as quick as some of the other handheld choices. There’s just one setting, but it proved effective since the actual time it took to steam our garments was right on par with other models we have tested (from 5.5 minutes to over 8 minutes, depending on the material thickness).

The 9-foot cord is also lengthy enough that you should be fine using it in most hotels. Did we mention it comes in black or pink?

Weight: 1.57 pounds | Water Tank Capacity: 6.1 ounces | Heat Time: 2.5 minutes | Steam Time: 10 minutes | Power Level: 800 watts

Final Verdict

The best clothes steamer is the Electrolux Garment Steamer , which heats up immediately, boasts effective steaming power, and has a convenient 12-foot cord. The Conair Turbo Extreme Steam Handheld Fabric Steamer is another great choice that can power through wrinkles in just a few passes with its five steam settings, and comes with multiple attachments to help you get your clothes looking crisp and wrinkle-free.

How We Tested the Clothes Steamers

We purchased 28 clothes steamers—both upright and handheld—and tested them in The Lab for 16 hours, then took them home for six months of use. We assessed each machine on a variety of factors, including how well they did (or didn’t!) do at getting our clothes to look fresh and crisp.

  • To start, we set up each steamer, noting how clear the instructions are and whether the design is intuitive or not. This means we look at details such as button placement, cord attachment, and accessories.
  • Next, we use a stopwatch to time how long each steamer takes to heat up. Once the steamer is ready to go, we use it on a silk shirt, dress shirt, and pair of linen pants for a precise look at its performance. We time how long it takes us to get wrinkles out of each material, as well.
  • We also consider each steamer’s portability. For handheld and travel steamers, this means how comfortably it can be carried around a home or packed in a suitcase. For standing or upright steamers, we look at how easily and smoothly they can be moved or rolled.
  • The value of each steamer is also determined by overall performance and price. In other words, we decide whether or not we’d be comfortable paying our own money for it, once we’ve seen and used it in person.

What to Look for in a Clothes Steamer

Type: standing or handheld.

Clothes steamers come in upright and handheld models, giving you the flexibility to keep one standing at the ready in your laundry room, or another tucked in a cabinet (or even in your suitcase, in the case of our favorite travel steamers ) for quick touch-ups. We’re fans of either, depending on your steaming needs.

“Handheld steamers are good to use for a quick touch-up or to travel with. Base tank steamers [upright steamers] are used in retail environments, because they have larger water reservoirs and therefore will run longer without refilling with water," says Wayne Edelman , CEO of Meurice Garment Care.

At home, they’re a good idea when you do lots of regular steaming, whether you're maintaining a very professional wardrobe with a lot of suits. Plus, they often come with a built-in hanger or clips for clothing and are more powerful.

We included a mix of both styles on this list, but only two of our top picks are standing (the Pure Enrichment PureSteam Pro Upright Clothes Steamer , our best standing pick, and the Jiffy J-2000 Floor Standing Fabric Steamer , our best large-capacity pick).

The Power Level and Steam Settings

Most home steamers have a wattage between 500 and 1,500 watts, and steamers with a higher wattage produce more steam at once. This allows them to work more effectively and get wrinkles out faster.

Some machines also allow you to use different modes and levels to control the amount of steam you’re using, too. However, keep in mind that you can only use so much steam on fabric before it gets overly saturated, and a powerful burst of hot steam can harm certain fabrics.

Velvet, velour, suede, waxed jackets, and anything plastic can be melted or warped by steaming—this also holds true for decorative elements like plastic buttons or beads. Katie Berry , a member of The Spruce’s Cleaning Review Board , additionally notes that "some metal embellishments will rust after repeated steaming, so try to avoid getting the device near them."

The majority of steamers release steam that’s somewhere between 212 and 400 degrees, which is why it’s important to keep your hands away from the nozzle during operation, too, and also handle the steamer carefully to avoid drips or spurts of hot water falling on your hands. As we noted in our testing, it's not uncommon to experience drips, especially as you're getting started with your steam session.

If you're not sure when to steam and when to use a steam iron , consider the advice of Eleanor Lofte , seamstress at Something Blue Bridal. She says that an iron is more appropriate when you’re working with a very thick fabric, or if the fabric has stubborn wrinkles or creases. Steamers can be a better choice when working with fragile fabrics, like polyester or nylon, that could easily be damaged by heat—or when you don’t have a good surface to iron on.

The Heat Time and Steam Time

While it may seem obvious that handheld picks will have smaller capacities, and uprights will tend to hold more, there's variation across different models, too. Of the models on this list, the water tanks of handheld options range from 6.1 ounces (our best travel pick, the Brookline Steamer for Clothes ) to 10 ounces (our best value pick, the CHI Handheld Garment Steamer for Clothes) , and offer 10 to 18 minutes of steam time. On the other hand, the largest machine on our list, the Jiffy J-2000 Floor Standing Fabric Steamer , offers 90 minutes of steam time.

While deciding what sort of machine or capacity is right for you, consider how many garments you have for steaming, and how often you intend to tackle them. If you only have a few pieces you’ll be freshening up one at a time for special occasions, then a smaller capacity will likely suit you just fine. But if you want to do multiple pieces in one go—or your wardrobe is full of silks, linen, and business attire that need regular freshening—then you might prefer a larger machine.

Additionally, keep in mind that higher steam settings may go through more steam at once. In this case, you’ll really want a machine with a large water tank capacity so you don’t need to refill the tank often while steaming your clothes.

Attachments

A steamer might come with attachments like a fabric brush, silicone band, or a fabric spacer (or in the case of our best overall, runner-up, the Conair Turbo Extreme Steam Handheld Fabric Steamer , all three!). Each tool serves a different purpose. A fabric brush is designed to help steam penetrate clothes, a silicone band helps secure creases, and a fabric spacer protects fragile materials. A lint brush may be included with some machines (like our best overall, the Electrolux Garment Steamer ) to help you remove lint and fuzz.

Before you check out, consider these products you may also need.

  • Norpro Plastic Funnel, Set of Three : During our testing, a funnel was necessary to fill a steamer with a small water tank opening—this set will get the job done.
  • Amazon Basics Velvet Clothes Hangers, Pack of 30 : If your steamer doesn't come with a place to hang up clothes, having hangers on hand is essential so you can reach your wrinkles at the right angle.
  • Tinfol Velvet Hanger Clips, Pack of 24 : You can turn any hanger into a pants hanger with these clips. Plus, they're handy for hanging your pants by the cuff while steaming.
  • iDesign Orbinni Steel Over-the-Door Storage Hook : The back of your bedroom or bathroom door can be a go-to spot to steam clothes, and this hook has four slots for an entire steaming session.

How we tested, what to consider when shopping for a clothes steamer, benefits of using a clothes steamer.

Tested by HGTV editors

We've all been there: You're in a hurry to get out of the door in the morning, throw on a shirt, look in the mirror and realize it's a wrinkled mess. You don't want to bother with the cumbersome ironing board (and might not even know where it is). Enter a clothing steamer. A clothing steamer is an easier-to-use alternative to an iron that works by heating water from its reservoir to create steam. That steam is then able to loosen the fibers in the garments it comes in contact with, releasing any wrinkles. Many consumers are fans of clothing steamers for not only their quick wrinkle-releasing capabilities but also for their ability to clean, freshen and even kill odor-causing bacteria in a variety of fabrics. And three of our top picks are on sale for Prime Day July 16 and 17.

To determine the best clothes steamers on the market, we started by researching the products that were available at the time of testing, thoroughly reading about each product and considering customer reviews. Our team of editors tested 16 different steamers in a variety of prices, features and designs to discover the best one for each category and household. We put each steamer to the test and observed how quickly the steamers were able to get rid of wrinkles, if they leaked water at all, their ease of use and maneuverability, how long a tank of water was able to continuously steam, how powerful each steamer was, if they were travel-friendly and if the steamer included any accessories. Our testers used the steamers on a variety of fabrics including cotton, linen, polyester, lyocell, suede, denim, flannel and more. We noted our likes, dislikes and opinions for each one to determine the overall winners.

Best Overall: Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Garment Steamer

  • Can be used vertically and horizontally
  • Easy to maneuver
  • Doesn’t spew or leak water
  • Water tank could be bigger

Conair's Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Steamer checks all the boxes with its powerful, penetrating steaming capabilities and takes our Best Overall title. A removable 7.3-ounce water tank fills easily with the recommended distilled water, and the steamer heats that water up in about 40 seconds. The nozzle features a dual-slotted ceramic plate that combines with 1,875 watts of power to produce double the steam and provide a smooth distribution of that steam for faster results — and fewer passes of the nozzle on wrinkles. While a lot of steamers on the market only offer one steam setting, the Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam boasts five settings, from Low to Turbo. Our tester found one tank of water to steam for about 15 minutes on the Mid-High setting and appreciated that the steamer could be used both vertically as well as horizontally — ideal for steaming fabrics low to the ground like the skirt of an armchair without having to worry about water spillage. She tested the steamer on cotton, linen and polyester-nylon performance upholstery fabric and noted that, while the upholstery needed more passes of the steamer to remove wrinkles, it was very effective at de-wrinkling the fabrics and was easy to maneuver. The steamer also comes with a built-in creaser for creating perfect pleats and a built-in stand for easy storage, while an included three-in-one attachment features a silicone band for pulling fabrics taut, a spacer for protecting delicates and a bristle brush to loosen fabrics.

  • Weight 3.2 pounds
  • Tank Capacity 7.3 ounces
  • Steam Settings 5
  • Heat Up Time 40 seconds
  • Steam Time Up to 20 minutes
  • Attachments Built-in creaser, built-in stand, 3-in-1 attachment with silicone band, fabric spacer and bristle brush

Best Handheld: Electrolux Handheld Garment and Fabric Steamer

  • Removed garment wrinkles in one to two passes
  • Heats up fast for quick steaming
  • Auto shutoff function
  • Slight condensation transfer occured on first few passes after heating up

Gone are the days of waiting forever for the iron to heat up and even longer to finally remove wrinkles and get out the door. With the Electrolux Handheld Garment and Fabric Steamer, you can have wrinkle-free clothing in just a few minutes. The removable 10-ounce water tank heats up in only 30 seconds and can continuously steam for up to 18 minutes. The steamer features two steam settings as well as an option to lock the trigger for continuous steam. Its 1,500 watts of power efficiently removed wrinkles in our tester's lyocell dress in just one pass, and her cotton dress took about two passes to remove the wrinkles. Because our tester says she always forgets to iron/steam until the last minute, she appreciated how quickly the steamer heated up and how fast it got the job done. As well as fast wrinkle-releasing capabilities, it also features a heavy-duty ceramic soleplate on the nozzle that evenly distributes the heat of the steam and helps control static on garments. Pump steam technology ensures no leaking or spilling of water no matter which way you use the steamer, vertically or horizontally, though our tester did notice a slight condensation transfer on the first few passes of the steamer after heating up. Other notable features include an auto shutoff function, a 12-foot power cord, included lint remover and fabric brush attachments, and a heat-resistant storage box.

Best Standing: Pure Enrichment PureSteam XL Standing Steamer

  • Up to one hour of continuous steam
  • Quick wrinkle-releasing capabilities
  • Water tank is detachable
  • Hose could be longer
  • Included hanger is flimsy

Ensure you always have the freshest fabrics with the Pure Enrichment PureSteam XL Standing Steamer. The steamer is ready to use in just 45 seconds and makes quick work of wrinkles thanks to its 1,500 watts of steaming power. A removable half-gallon water tank allows you to de-wrinkle, clean and deodorize fabrics for up to an hour without having to stop and refill it with water. Our tester loved how quickly the steamer was able to freshen and get rid of wrinkles in her 100-percent cotton dress in just a few passes of the nozzle, noting that the handle is very easy to hold and control while using. She appreciated how smoothly the wheels were able to guide the steamer across her hardwood floor and how sturdy the telescopic pole was when it was fully put together. However, she does wish the hose was less stiff and a little longer in length to reach the top of her curtains. In the box, you get the steamer plus a hanger with clips and a fabric brush attachment. A two-year warranty is also included with your purchase. Pure Enrichment even claims this steamer can kill bedbugs and dust mites, and although we didn't test this claim, the high heat output of the steam created seems to back that statement.

  • Weight 10 pounds
  • Tank Capacity 64 ounces
  • Steam Settings 1
  • Heat Up Time 45 seconds
  • Steam Time Up to 60 minutes
  • Attachments Fabric brush, hanger

Best Value: Hilife Handheld Portable Clothes Steamer

  • Lightweight
  • Long, nine-foot power cord
  • Steamer can only be used at an upright angle
  • Long heat-up time

With more than 77,000 positive consumer ratings on Amazon, the Hilife Handheld Portable Steamer definitely deserves a spot on our list. And, because of its powerful steaming properties for under $30, we've deemed it the Best Steamer for Value. The steamer heats up in a few minutes and boasts an 8.1-ounce water tank, which our tester found to last for 16 minutes of active steaming. Its light weight of 1.7 pounds paired with an ergonomic handle makes for a comfortable design, but the steamer should only be kept upright when in use and not tilted to avoid water spillage. Our tester found the steamer's 700 watts of power to work great, getting rid of wrinkles in her polyester dress and linen skirt in about two to three passes — all without any leakage or sputtering of water from the nozzle. While it only has one setting, the steam produced is more than sufficient for lightweight clothing but might need more passes on thicker fabrics to remove wrinkles. Other highlights include a 9.2-foot power cord, an included fabric brush attachment and an included water cup to make filling the tank a breeze.

  • Weight 1.7 pounds
  • Tank Capacity 8.1 ounces
  • Heat Up Time 2 minutes
  • Steam Time Up to 15 minutes
  • Attachments Water cup, fabric brush

Best Foldable: Beautural Foldable Handheld Clothes Steamer

  • Foldable design is great for traveling or storing away
  • Impressive steam output
  • Shorter steam time

Whether you're traveling with your steamer or just looking for a space-saving design, the Beautural Foldable Handheld Steamer is a great option. With 1,000 watts of power and a 30-second heat-up time, this steamer gets rid of wrinkles in no time. Our tester found the 5-ounce water tank to be easy to fill, with it twisting off and popping back onto the machine seamlessly. She steamed a cotton-blend shirt, a polyester shower curtain and polyester blackout curtains and was impressed with the steam level and how quickly it was able to remove wrinkles from those items. The steamer's handle folds into the device for when it's not in use and even comes with a mesh bag for on-the-go steaming and easy storage. A huge plus of this steamer is that it can be used either horizontally or vertically, and our tester didn't experience any leaking or drips of water while using it. While it is made slightly cumbersome by the fact that you have to continuously push the steam button to use it, she felt the effectiveness of the steamer far outweighs this con. And, an extra-long, eight-foot power cord allows it to reach across larger fabrics such as bedding and upholstered furniture with ease.

  • Weight 1.4 pounds
  • Tank Capacity 5.07 ounces
  • Steam Time About 10 minutes
  • Attachments Mesh storage bag

Best Versatile: Salav Adjustable Standing Garment Steamer

  • Ideal for deodorizing, cleaning and killing germs and bacteria
  • Available in three colors
  • Compactable for storage
  • Sporadically sputters water
  • Hose is pretty stiff

From curtains and upholstered furniture to blouses and slacks, the Salav Standing Steamer is versatile enough to remove wrinkles from and clean most fabrics its steam comes in contact with. Thanks to a 1.8-liter water tank, the steamer can provide over an hour of steam time without having to stop to refill it. Its 1,500 watts quickly and easily got rid of wrinkles in our tester's faux-linen curtains as well as multiple polyester tops. Because the steam produced reaches over 200 degrees Fahrenheit, this standing steamer is ideal for deodorizing, cleaning, freshening, and killing germs and bacteria on not only clothing but also bedding, pet beds, stuffed animals and more. While this steamer produces powerful and hot steam, its dual-insulated hose and nozzle ensure it can withstand the heat. Our tester appreciated how easy it was to store the steamer, with the adjustable telescopic pole and foldable hanger collapsing down to just 32 inches in height, which fits perfectly in the corner of her closet when not in use. A downside she noticed was that the included hanger was a bit flimsy at times. To prolong the life of this steamer, use only distilled water and empty any remaining water in the tank after each use.

  • Weight 9 pounds
  • Tank Capacity 61 ounces
  • Steam Time Over 60 minutes
  • Attachments Folding adjustable hanger

Best Travel: Polardo Handheld Portable Travel Steamer

  • Lightweight and portable
  • Leak-free use at any angle
  • Handle-free design is ideal for a suitcase
  • Short steam time

Say goodbye to wrinkly clothes while traveling for good with the Polardo Handheld Travel Steamer. Its petite size, light weight of 1.2 pounds and handle-free design allow it to slip into a suitcase or weekend bag without taking up too much space. While the water tank is smaller than full-size steamers at just four ounces, its powerfulness removes wrinkles from clothes just as efficiently as those models. Our tester found that the steamer heats up in just 25 seconds and one tank of water lasted for 12 minutes of steaming time. A stainless-steel plate and 360-degree, anti-spill design allow it to be used as a steamer and an iron. Our tester used it to iron a linen shirt on her bed, running the metal plate over the fabric, and raved about the wrinkle-free results. She also used it as a regular steamer and found it to work just as well at removing wrinkles. Another perk of this steamer is that it features an internal nano water filter that allows you to fill the tank with tap water without the risk of calcification. One drawback our tester found was that, although it wasn't a lot, this steamer did spit small amounts of water when first switched to the steam setting and occasionally while using it. As a bonus with the steamer, a drawstring travel pouch and lint remover attachment are included.

  • Weight 1.2 pounds
  • Tank Capacity 4 ounces
  • Heat Up Time 25 seconds
  • Steam Time Up to 12 minutes
  • Attachments Travel pouch, lint removal brush

Best Steamer/Iron Combo: Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam 2-in-1 Steamer & Iron

  • Can be used as a steamer or an iron
  • 10-second heat-up time
  • Functional attachments included
  • No auto shutoff function

You've probably heard of a steam iron (an iron with a steam function), but what about a steamer with ironing capabilities? The Conair 2-in-1 Turbo ExtremeSteam Steamer and Iron is able to do just that with its incredible 1,875 watts of steaming power. Heating up and ready to use in just 10 seconds, the 8.5-ounce water tank steams continuously for up to 10 minutes and would be best for quick work on a few garments at a time. When held vertically, the steamer functions like a normal clothes steamer, but when held horizontally, the steamer functions like an iron. An extra-large aluminum plate on the nozzle presses garments just like an iron would for a professional look. Four steam settings — Low, Mid, High and Turbo — allow you to take the steam from delicate fabrics (Low setting) to thick upholstery (Turbo setting) with a click of a button. Our tester found the Mid and High settings to work on everything she used it on, from denim and flannel to linen and cotton. She even used the steamer on hem tape for a sewing project and was impressed with the amount of steam it generated. While it does have a Smart Sensor Safety Feature that stops steam when the machine is placed on a flat surface, our tester wished it had an auto shutoff function as well. The steamer comes with three attachments including a bonnet to protect delicate fabrics, a creaser for pleats and folds, and a two-in-one silicone band and bristle brush for pulling fabrics taut and penetrating thick fabrics.

  • Weight 3.5 pounds
  • Tank Capacity 8.5 ounces
  • Steam Settings 4
  • Heat Up Time 10 seconds
  • Steam Time Up to 10 minutes
  • Attachments Delicates bonnet, creaser, 2-in-1 silicone band and bristle brush

Handheld vs. Standing: There are two types of steamers: handheld and standing. Handheld steamers are more compact in size and often travel-friendly. These steamers are ideal for frequent use on clothing as they're easier to use and usually have a trigger for controlling when the steam comes out. However, handheld steamers have smaller water tanks and are best for steaming only a handful of garments at a time. Standing steamers, or upright steamers, are often described as professional steamers since they're more heavy-duty than handheld versions. They usually have a long hose attached to the nozzle, an extendable pole, larger water tanks and sometimes come with an attached hanger. Standing steamers are best for longer steaming sessions and jobs that require a boost of powerful steam.

Fabrics and Power Level: Consider what type of material you'd be using the steamer on the most. Steamers are ideal for delicate fabrics such as silk, cashmere and wool that an iron's direct heat could damage, as well as cotton, polyester and linen. Avoid using a steamer on fabrics that could be damaged by heat such as waxed garments, leather and suede. Also, be aware of any plastic buttons or embellishments on your garment that could melt if in direct contact with the hot steam. Delicate fabrics need less power wattage to remove wrinkles, while thicker materials, like curtains, may need a steamer with more wattage to get the job done.

Size and Portability: If you'll be taking your steamer on the road with you, opt for one that is travel-friendly. Handheld steamers are the best option and are usually lightweight and compact enough to fit in a suitcase. Also, think about where you'll be storing your steamer and whether or not you'll have the space (especially for a standing steamer). Double-check the steamer's weight and dimensions before buying to ensure it's the right size for your needs.

Features and Accessories: A few steamer features to think about when purchasing include how long it takes to heat up, water tank capacity, how long one tank can steam for, how many steam levels it has, if the steamer is leakproof or not, and if it can be tilted horizontally to steam. Some steamers will include additional accessories to make them multifunctional such as brush attachments, storage bags, lint removers, guards to protect delicate fabrics, small cups for filling the water tank and more.

We considered all of these factors, as well as customer reviews, when selecting and testing our top picks.

The left image shows HGTV editor Laura James' printed top before steaming, and the right image shows the same top after using our "Best Overall" Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam steamer to remove wrinkles in the garment.

While clothes steamers function similarly to irons, one of the main benefits of using a steamer is that they are much less damaging on your garments than an iron — especially when used on delicate fabrics. Irons require direct contact with the garment and use applied pressure and heat to remove wrinkles, whereas steamers are held a short distance away from the garment and use — you guessed it — hot steam to remove wrinkles. However, if crisp pleats and sharp creases are what you're looking for, then an iron is the best choice.

Steamers are versatile. They work wonders on many fabrics throughout the home such as wrinkled curtains, drapes, bedding, shower curtains, tablecloths, table runners, napkins and more. And let's be honest: Lugging out an ironing board and an iron to remove wrinkles from those larger fabrics would not be the easiest task (or the most fun, either).

Steamers also have many positive health-related benefits, including the ability to kill up to 99% of bacteria, viruses and germs on not only clothing but also household items like mattresses, pillows, stuffed animals, pet beds, sneakers, upholstered furniture and more. For best results, make sure the steam is hot enough (200 degrees Fahrenheit or more) and is in continuous contact with the fabric for at least three minutes. And, because of the intense heated-steam output, steamers also have the ability to clean, deodorize and freshen clothing and fabrics.

How we test clothes steamers

best clothes steamers

The GHI put a range of market-leading garment steamers to the test. Our experts timed how long each model took to heat up, before judging how quickly and effectively it steamed a linen suit, a silk evening dress, a cotton and polycotton shirt and a viscose top.

They considered how easy and comfortable each garment steamer felt to use and noted if it dripped or spat. Its manoeuvrability, controls and overall design were also taken into account before awarding a final score.

We've listed our best buys below, along with a guide on the clothes steamer features to look for.

Score: 93/100

No matter what fabric was thrown at it, this steamer took it in its stride. It rapidly steamed through a large pile of clothes, thanks to its big tank and wide head, and it left everything bone dry.

It proved powerful, but not too strong for delicate fabric, and our polycotton shirt emerged looking as crisp as if it had been ironed. It comes with a generous array of accessories too, including a folding hanger, and has wheels for easy transportation.

However, there was no light to indicate when it was ready to use and no way of controlling the steam. It spat occasionally, too, but we’re being picky.

Key specifications

Philips steam & go plus handheld clothes steamer.

Score: 90 /100

If you’re frequently on the move and pressed for time, look to this handheld model. It heated up in an impressive 29 seconds and its wide head made quick work of almost all creases, across all fabrics.

However, it proved too cumbersome to tackle intricate areas and the trigger switch can’t be locked, which means you have to hold it down while steaming.

Despite its small capacity, we were pleasantly surprised by how long its water lasted before requiring a refill. There aren’t many included accessories, but the protective glove is a bonus.

The compact F10 gave a brilliant performance, eradicating all creases from every fabric except cotton (although it still did a good job). It preheated quickly and its smaller head offered better manoeuvrability than some of its competitors, allowing it to cover every nook and cranny.

It offers two power modes and comes with plenty of useful accessories, including a collar press. Its short power cable limited our reach and it took a little longer than expected to steam linen and silk, but those were our only niggles.

Score: 87/100

This handheld steamer will rid your clothes of wrinkles for a reasonable price. It quickly smoothed creases from all materials tested and left our polycotton shirt looking freshly ironed. It comes with a one year guarantee and is a fraction of the cost of many of its counterparts.

However, it spat sometimes and its short head risks burning your fingers if not handled carefully. It started straining slightly after about two minutes and, despite its speed, our silk, linen and cotton clothes were all left a little damp.

This colourful, slimline garment steamer would make a great holiday companion, quickly heating up and removing creases from warm-weather favourites including viscose, silk and cotton.

It took longer to achieve pristine results on our linen garments, however, and it spat a little, meaning it’s best used when your clothes have time to dry. With a full tank our tester said it felt heavy too. But for an on-the-go steamer, it’s surprisingly effective.

Score: 86/100

Our tester praised the “powerful steam output” of this device, which removed “each and every crease” from viscose and silk garments quickly and effectively, thanks to the larger head. Other materials – including linen and cotton – required another sweep to be 100% crease-free, but the end results were equally impressive.

It reached optimum temperature quickly and we didn't have to worry about spitting, making it ideal for last-minute touch-ups. The travel-friendly compact design was also a highlight, while the additional magnetic accessory attachments – including pads to assist with everything from lint removal and fragrancing clothing – scored highly with our expert, who added that it would be a great first time steamer for all fabrics.

Score: 85/100

This lightweight and stylish steamer from Philips performed well across our tests, effortlessly removing the majority of creases (although some needed an extra sweep and it struggled a little more on silk).

It's also super-easy to use – it heats up in 31 seconds, the water tank is easy to fill and remove and it has a 2 metre long cord – and the handle tucks under the body, making it a great travel option.

It did spit slightly when held vertically and you have to hold the trigger down for continuous steam, but these are relatively minor complaints. Overall, it's a sturdy option for on-the-go crease-removal.

This standing home steamer boasts an impressive 1.8L tank for 60 minutes of continuous steaming, making it great for larger loads, family use and even small businesses. There are two steam levels to choose from (900W and 1750W), plus an additional brush for delicate fabrics such as silk, though it’s worth noting that this isn’t safe for use on leather or suede. Despite that, it “excelled” on each material tested, removing every crease – even viscose.

The integrated hanger and hooks proved popular with our tester, enabling effortless steaming, though the lack of castor wheels compromises the manoeuvrability somewhat. The large tank is easy to fill, but the indicator light and water line can be difficult to see due to awkward positioning. While this was one of the more premium devices tested, our expert felt the performance justified the higher price point.

Score: 83/100

If you find holding down a trigger uncomfortable, you may prefer this upright steamer as you simply turn on a dial for a continuous stream of steam. This effectively banished creases across most fabrics (as usual, linen needed a few extra sweeps and there were some visible watermarks when finished), and its large steaming head means you can cover more material in one go.

Its hanging system is sturdy, and the detachable water tank is easy to fill, although we found it emptied more quickly than some uprights. There’s also no way of knowing when it’s ready to steam, or when it has reached a new setting, and the dial markings aren’t the clearest. Overall, though, it's quick-heating and convenient.

Our experts were full of praise for this sleek steamer, which is available in a range of pastel shades. On test, it removed creases quickly and was particularly effective on cotton, polycotton, and even linen. It also worked well on silk, but the fabric was left a little damp, so build in some extra time if you’re steaming any occasion wear.

Another pro to this steamer is its versatility as the head doubles as an iron for more stubborn wrinkles. Testers would have liked a more transparent water tank (so it’s easier to see when top-ups are needed) and more detailed instructions. But it’s a fairly intuitive design, earning full marks for its ease of use.

Tefal DT3030 Access Steam Pocket Garment Steamer

DT3030 Access Steam Pocket Garment Steamer

Score: 82/100

This super-speedy garment steamer heated up in a blistering 15 seconds in our lab. It was also fast at removing creases, performing particularly well on polycotton, and all clothes were left dry. It struggled to remove deep-set wrinkles in cotton and viscose, but it was able to lighten the latter.

Its collapsible head can be folded down but it’s a little short, which means we occasionally caught our fingers in the steam. There’s also no lock, so the trigger has to be held down continually.

Russell Hobbs Steam Genie 2 in 1 Handheld Clothes Steamer 28370

Steam Genie 2 in 1 Handheld Clothes Steamer 28370

Score: 80/100

If you’re tight on space, this multi-tasker steams and irons! As a result, the triangular ironing plate is particularly handy if you need to get into any hard-to-steam nooks and crannies. It was very quick at removing creases when steaming too, excelling on cotton, polycotton, silk and viscose. Our garments were dry afterwards and it didn’t spit either.

The controls were responsive and clear, although our tester found the sliding steam control switch took a bit of getting used to. You have to turn the steamer off to refill the tank and it’s not the lightest to hold. Its attachments also need to be stored separately, but it comes with a handy heat-resistant travel bag for the steamer itself.

Tefal Care For You First YT2020G0

Care For You First YT2020G0

This is a little different to the other steamers on our list. You pop your garment (or three – its max capacity) inside, close it, and then control the system via its remote control. The machine will steam, refresh or sanitise your clothes, depending on the setting you select.

So, what did our testers think? Well, they were impressed with how effective it was at removing most creases from linen, cotton, viscose and polycotton, leaving our shirts and trousers looking much smarter. But it struggled with our satin evening dress – so you may still need to tackle those delicate fabrics with a traditional steamer.

Its quickest programme takes ten minutes, so it’s less practical when you're in a real hurry. But if you spend hours ironing your shirts each week, then this is a great alternative that you can turn on and leave. It was generally intuitive to use too, but you’ll need a good spot to store it. Size aside, it’s a practical, if pricey, buy.

Beldray Handi Steam Max Pro BEL0932

Handi Steam Max Pro BEL0932

Score: 78/100

Compact, lightweight and ready to use in just 30 seconds, this hand steamer is great for both travelling and day-to-day use. Though the functionality appears relatively stripped back, it offers everything you need – two heat settings, vertical steaming capabilities and a brush attachment for finer fabrics.

The device was quick to remove creases when steaming viscose, linen, silk, cotton and polycotton, though some small creases may require a second sweep. The water tank is easy to fill and the trigger switch is both simple and comfortable to use – even over longer periods.

The device did leave items a little damp which, while not unusual, means we’d recommend using in advance of wear to ensure any water residue has the chance to dry.

Tefal DT9100 Access Steam Care Garment Steamer

DT9100 Access Steam Care Garment Steamer

The DT9100 left our viscose garments looking brand new and successfully rid linen of all wrinkles. Three steam settings cater to different fabrics, but it wasn’t powerful enough to smooth silk and cotton fully. Our silk dress was left wet and there were some damp patches on the linen suit too.

Its large head made it harder to reach into tricky areas and there was some spitting. That said, it took just over 30 seconds to heat up, which is handy for one-off touch-ups.

Russell Hobbs Steam Genie Aroma 28040

Steam Genie Aroma 28040

Score: 76/100

With its scented steam, this steamer will make your clothes feel and smell fresh in between washes. It banished creases in one sweep from lightweight fabrics such as viscose and silk, but look elsewhere if your wardrobe is exclusively cottons and linens, as it struggled on these.

Our tester enjoyed its spit-free design, easy-to-fit opaque tank and long swivel cord but found it quite heavy and ill-balanced to use.

What type of clothes steamer should I go for?

best garment steamers

There are two types of garment steamer: upright and handheld. Both designs do the same job but there are a few key differences.

Upright steamers are powerful and best suited to heavy duty jobs. They have large water tanks built into their base, allowing you to keep steaming for longer, and usually feature built-in hangers. However, they tend to be bulky, less portable and more expensive.

Handheld steamers are much lighter and more compact, making them far easier to carry around with you. They have smaller water tanks but tend to be more affordable.

What should I look for in a clothes steamer?

best garment steamers

There are several features that set top-of-the-range garment steamers apart from sub-par models.

Time to heat

High-performing fabric steamers preheat in under a minute for quick and effective touch-ups, though those with larger tanks (typically the larger upright steamers) will naturally take a little longer to get to temperature.

Water tank capacity

Look for a large water tank if you’ve got a big pile of clothes to plough through, as it will ensure you don’t have to keep stopping and refilling.

If you plan on using your clothes steamer for one-off occasions or touch-ups, a smaller tank will suffice, ideally with a transparent casing so you know when to refill it.

A trigger lock is another useful tool, as it means you can enjoy continuous steam without having to hold your finger down.

Additional accessories and versatility

The best fabric steamers offer a range of steam settings, allowing you to alter the power depending on the delicacy of the fabric – whether that be cotton, linen, silk or viscose.

Others offer features and attachments such as brushes to refresh upholstery, lint removers and scent infusers, to use on a variety of garments.

Included accessories such as travel bags and folding hangers can also be useful, particularly if you're looking for a handheld steamer to take travelling.

Energy usage

It’s worth considering your needs and the energy usage of your clothes steamer prior to purchasing. If you plan to use your steamer for a couple of items, then a light energy, handheld device will do just fine.

For larger loads, you may require a higher wattage standing steamer.

Safety features

Look for a device that offers automatic shut off, meaning when the water runs out or if the device gets too hot, the machine will turn itself off to prevent damage.

Take Our Word for It

What is real simple selects.

Real Simple / Henry Wortock

Clothes steamers are a great alternative for people who don’t have the patience, space, or tools to iron their clothing . Clothes steamers work by heating up water to produce steam, which loosens the clothing’s fibers to get rid of wrinkles. Steaming also helps give your clothes a nice refresh and can be used for other household items, such as curtains.

To determine the best clothes steamers, we tested 48 models in our Des Moines lab and at home, assessing each product’s effectiveness, ease of assembly, design, and overall value, as well as how long it took for each product to produce steam. We also tapped Marilee Nelson , co-founder of Branch Basics , and Jerry Pozniak , managing director of Jeeves New York , a luxury dry cleaning service, for expert advice on what to look for when shopping and tips on how to use the model you choose.

Best Overall

Conair extremesteam hand-held fabric steamer.

It comes with a helpful three-in-one attachment and a built-in clamp for creasing.

It’s a bit heavy, so it may not be ideal for travel.

Of all the clothes steamers we tested in our lab, this device from Conair earned our top spot, thanks to its smart design, efficient heating process, and overall effectiveness. The compact yet powerful steamer removed wrinkles in all types of fabric (including cotton and silk) and took just 40 seconds to fully heat up, making it one of our Very Best Products of 2024 . When used on lighter fabrics, like cotton and linen, we found that the steamer worked far quicker than a standard iron. Thicker items like jeans and sweaters did require a few more passes, but no more than an iron would. Even after six months of use, the steamer is still working perfectly.

This steamer comes with five steam settings (ranging from low to supercharged) for use with different fabrics, along with a helpful three-in-one attachment that consists of a silicone band to pull fabric tauter, a fabric spacer to keep trims safe, and a bristle brush for use on heavier materials. It also has a built-in clamp to create even pleats and folds, and it can be used for up to 15 minutes continuously thanks to its large, 7.3-ounce water tank.

While the steamer’s opening is pretty tiny, the water tank is detachable and the device comes with a water funnel to help avoid spilling. Additionally, we appreciate its lengthy cord, comfortable grip, and reasonable price. Plus, it comes in five fun colors. Take note, though, that it isn’t the most lightweight steamer, so you might get a sore arm after several minutes of use.

Best Budget

Proctor silex compact 2-in-1 garment steamer/iron.

It removes wrinkles from silk quickly and effectively.

The water reservoir is small, and the steamer presents a burn risk if you’re not careful.

If you’re looking for an inexpensive clothes steamer that still packs a punch, make sure to consider this model from Proctor Silex. The small and lightweight steamer boasts a low price tag, but that’s just one of several perks it offers.

When we tested out this steamer, we found that it heats up very quickly and is simple to use, with only one button to press and a single setting. It’s not the best on linen (it eases wrinkles but doesn’t fully remove them), but it is highly effective on silk and cotton, and performed especially well on our lightweight garments. It’s comfortable to hold, too, thanks to a long handle, and it has a lengthy 10-foot cord for added convenience. Additionally, the steamer comes with a fabric brush attachment for use on upholstery .  After six months of use, the steamer is still going strong, with no changes in quality whatsoever.

The fabric brush can double as a spacer to keep a necessary 1-inch buffer between the steamer’s head and the handle; otherwise, you might risk getting burned, as we found during our tests. We also didn’t love that the water reservoir is pretty small and requires frequent refilling, although it is easy to fill up with a funnel. Note that you can only use the steamer for up to seven minutes in one go, making it less suitable for those steaming a large load of clothes at once. Still, for a simple, no-frills device, it’s worth its low cost.

Heating Time: 45 seconds | Steam Duration: 7 minutes | Weight: Not listed | Water Tank Capacity: 4 ounces

Best Upright

Pure enrichment upright clothes steamer.

The included garment pole is adjustable and comes with hangers.

There’s no indicator light to say when it’s at the right temperature.

If you want a steamer that can provide a serious amount of power for a long period of time, opt for an upright model like this option from Pure Enrichment. The device has a massive 2-liter water tank to provide an hour’s worth of steaming, which is far greater than many others.

During our tests, we discovered that this steamer works quickly and effectively on all fabrics, especially silk. It heats up quickly and has four steam levels to choose from as well as adjustable temperature controls, which we found to be extremely helpful. To use this device, you just need to step on the pedal at the base; the water tank is detachable and easy to take in and out without spilling.

The adjustable garment pole conveniently comes with hangers and clips, saving you the hassle of bending over to steam clothes and deal with the cord. Additionally, the steamer features a fabric brush and has a comfortable arm. After six months of weekly use, this steamer has continued to exceed our expectations. We've noticed no sputtering, and every material we've steamed has retained a wrinkle-free appearance after hanging and cooling.

Although the steamer has wheels on the back for portability, it isn't very portable—it's upright design makes it a bit bulky, and we wish it had more wheels on the front for better stability. There also isn’t an indicator light to say when it’s ready to use or at the proper temperature. That said, it’s a very high-quality steamer that offers plenty of significant, time-saving benefits.

Heating Time: 45 seconds | Steam Duration: 1 hour | Weight: 9.6 pounds | Water Tank Capacity: 67.6 ounces

Best for Upholstery

Black+decker hgs200 advanced handheld steamer.

The three attachments are all effective and easy to use.

You have to press the button the whole time, and there are no temperature settings.

Getting wrinkles out of upholstery can be tricky, but this top-rated steamer from Black+Decker is more than up to the challenge. During our tests, we found that the lightweight, easy-to-use device completely removed wrinkles from all fabrics (especially silk and cotton), and it comes with a special upholstery attachment that makes it even more effective. It only took us one pass to steam our tablecloth, and we didn't even have to go over it.

Some more great features include a lint remover attachment as well as one for use with delicate fabric that helps prevent water from dripping onto the material. It was comfortable to hold, too, with a long 15-foot cord for extra portability. While the steamer only has one setting, its steam and temperature were powerful and consistent in our testing, and the water tank is fairly large (and easy to take on and off). Despite its easy attachment, we did encounter some difficulty filling the tank—the chamber's hole has a middle section to mark the maximum fill line, which restricted entry and prevented us from adding a funnel. The pour lip did allow us to add water without spilling, but a funnel would have simplified the process.

It's worth noting that you do have to press the power button the entire time you use the steamer, and there’s also no fabric creaser attachment included like with some other options. We also observed some sputtering when the water reservoir was overfilled, so we recommend letting it heat up before activating the steam. Still, it’s still a reliable and efficient steamer we wholeheartedly recommend for upholstery and more. And, after six months of use, it still works as good as new.

Heating Time: 45 seconds | Steam Duration: 15 minutes | Weight: 3.6 pounds | Water Tank Capacity: 7.4 ounces

Best Portable

Polardo hand held portable travel garment steamer.

It's small enough to travel with and heats up very quickly.

It's less effective on silk and makes a clicking noise while in use.

For anyone seeking a clothes steamer they can easily take on the go, this option from Polardo is an excellent choice. The highly compact and lightweight steamer stands under 8 inches tall and weighs just over 1 pound, making it small enough to throw in a bag for travel . The 6-foot cord takes up minimal space, though you can plug it into an extension cord for added flexibility.

We were amazed by how quickly this steamer heated up—within just 20 seconds, it was already producing a strong stream of steam. This steamer proved particularly effective on cotton, linen, and polyester fabrics, which are lightweight yet robust enough for direct contact with the nozzle. Our silk proved to be a bit more challenging, requiring us to maintain our distance to avoid damaging the material. On delicate fabrics, we found the brush attachment to be especially effective.

The steamer emitted a fairly loud clicking noise while in operation, which the manual said occurs only if the steamer needs more water. Luckily, once the steam was steady, we could hardly notice the noise. After six months of use, it's still working well.

The tradeoff for this steamer's compact size is its small water capacity. With a tank capacity of just 4 ounces, the device requires fairly frequent refills and isn't large enough to tackle curtains and other garments with a large surface area. We also found the water tank opening to be a bit small. Still, the filling process was a breeze—simply click the release button to remove the water tank and pour through the opening. We appreciate that the device has a small rubbery plug that helps prevent spills as you snap the tank back into place.

Best Large Capacity

Chi handheld garment steamer.

It heats up in just 20 seconds.

The button is awkwardly located, causing accidental setting changes.

Having to constantly refill a clothes steamer’s water tank can be a hassle, which is why a large-capacity steamer like this model from CHI is so desirable. The device boasts a 10-ounce capacity tank that’s not only larger than average but also easy to fill due to its large opening, saving you serious time and effort.

This steamer heats up quicker than most (in just 20 seconds!), and it comes with two mode options (low and high). It’s comfortable to hold, has a long 10-foot cord, and features a locking mechanism to keep the steam on or off. It also comes with a fabric brush that we found to be very effective during our testing, especially on linen. After six months of use, the steamer is in the same condition as it was on day one.

In terms of negatives, they’re pretty minor: The main button is inconveniently located, which can lead to accidental setting changes, and we noticed that there can also be some slight water sputtering when the steamer is first turned on. We also wish it was a bit lighter, as our arm tends to hurt after steaming for longer durations. But those are small qualms that certainly don’t overpower the steamer’s many benefits (including its fairly low price and stylish red color).

Best Clothes Steamer/Iron Combo

Electrolux garment steamer.

The locking mechanism keeps the steam going without any effort on your end.

The setting icons are hard to decipher and have no instructions.

Why shell out the money for a clothes steamer as well as an iron when you can have a device capable of doing both jobs? This steamer from Electrolux can be used vertically or horizontally like an iron, powerfully removing wrinkles from fabric regardless of its position.

The compact steamer (which is available in either black or blue) has two settings and comes with a sizable 10-ounce water tank that requires minimal effort to fill and remove. The device also stands out for how quickly it heats up (only 30 seconds) and for how long it can be used continuously (nearly 20 minutes). It has a comfortable grip, too, and comes with a handy locking mechanism that keeps the steam going without you having to continuously press the button.

It also includes a fabric brush and lint brush, both of which we found to be effective. The fabric brush excelled at minimizing water droplets on our garments, and the lint brush was a real showstopper, removing both pet hair and wrinkles from our skirt. This device works incredibly fast on lighter wrinkles, and though it does sometimes struggle to completely remove deeper ones, we've found that every garment looks better after steaming than it did before.

After six months of use, the quality of this steamer is exactly the same as when we first received it. As for price, it's slightly above average, and you’d hope that for that amount, it’d come with instructions on how to decipher the otherwise unclear icons for each setting. That annoyance aside, this is a very solid device that does both of its jobs quite well.

Best With Attachments

Conair handheld garment steamer.

In addition to the three main attachments, it also has a handy built-in creaser tool.

Its power decreases the longer you use it.

If you want a clothes steamer that comes with multiple extra tools designed to enhance the steaming process, take a look at this great pick from Conair. The small, lightweight steamer features three highly useful attachments: a silicone band to pull the fabric taut, a bristle brush to get through heavier fabrics, and a delicate fabric spacer to keep trims and finer fabrics safe from harm. But that’s not all—the steamer also comes with a built-in creaser tool that we found very effective and easy to use during our tests.

Filling this steamer’s water tank is simple, but you do need to be careful of overfilling or else it won’t work. You can choose between two settings (regular and turbo), both of which are labeled clearly and have instructions. While we found it to be a bit larger than other steamers on our list, its comfortable grip ensures that your arm won’t get tired, even if you go for all 15 minutes of the continuous use it promises.

After using the steamer for six months, we've noticed no changes in quality. It removes wrinkles seamlessly from our clothes—especially the softer, thinner garments like button downs and linen pants—with no sputtering whatsoever. Plus, it has a long cord and reasonable price tag. It may not be the most powerful steamer on the market, and frustratingly, it does wane in power as it works, even on turbo mode. But there’s still a lot to like, especially those helpful accessories.

Best Professional

Jiffy fabric steamer.

It can be used continuously for an hour and a half and rarely needs a water refill.

It only has one setting.

Compact clothes steamers may be convenient, but if you want a device that can handle heavy-duty use and don’t mind the large size, a professional-grade option like this model from Jiffy is the way to go. The steamer can last for an hour and a half of continuous use, with a huge 96-ounce water tank that can go through at least a half-dozen items before needing a refill.

We were amazed by this steamer's sheer speed and effectiveness—it removed wrinkles in a matter of seconds, so we never had to run it over the same spot multiple times. It worked well on all materials in our testing—especially silk—maintaining its performance throughout six months of use. It helpfully comes with a rod to hang up clothes as you work, as well as two sets of wheels that glide smoothly and provide extra stability. We found it comfortable to hold and appreciated the long cord. As a bonus, the tank is easy to fill without spilling. Just keep in mind that the hose does get pretty hot, and since it's long and floppy, you'll want to make sure it doesn't hit your legs as you work.

Despite its power, this fairly simple steamer has only one setting, so you can’t vary the steam level or temperature depending on the fabric. It may leave the occasional water mark on clothing, and its large size makes it difficult to store.

Heating Time: 2 minutes | Steam Duration: 1.5 hours | Weight: 15.9 pounds | Water Tank Capacity: 96 ounces

After all our testing, we found Conair’s Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Fabric Steamer to be the most appealing, thanks to its five powerful settings and useful attachments, among other features. For a great lower-budget alternative, we recommend the Proctor Silex Compact 2-in-1 Garment Steamer/Iron , which is compact, easy to use, and heats up very quickly.

To find the best clothes steamers, we tested 48 models in our Des Moines lab and at home, evaluating their effectiveness on a variety of fabrics. For each steamer, we first recorded its measurements, then noted how easy or difficult it was to roll it (if it was a standing model) or unfold it (if it was a folding model). We filled each steamer’s water reservoir to the max, then hit the “on” button (going to the highest setting if available) and timed how long it took to fully heat up. We then switched the steamers’ settings to the lowest options (if available) to let them cool down and recorded that timing, as well.

Next, we began the steaming process with each device. We first steamed a woman’s silk shirt on the lowest/silk setting (when applicable) and noted how quickly and well wrinkles were removed. After, we moved to the medium/cotton setting (when applicable) and steamed a men’s dress shirt while noting the same information. For this test, we also used the steamer’s creaser attachment (if included) to create a crease along the shirt’s side and took note of its sharpness. Finally, we switched to each steamer’s highest/linen setting (when applicable) and worked the device on a pair of linen pants, recording the capability and speed in removing wrinkles.

At the end of our testing, we summarized each steamer’s effectiveness in tackling wrinkles on each fabric as well as if the steamer ever sputtered near or onto the garments. We also noted our thoughts on the design of each steamer, including the simplicity of filling the water tank without spilling, the comfort level of holding the steamer for long periods of time, the number of setting options and the ability to understand their functions, and the existence and effectiveness of any accessories.

After that, we recorded the cord length of each steamer and whether it could rotate easily around the base when we changed angles or directions. For portable steamers, we looked at the ease of folding and storing it for travel, while for standing models, we analyzed how smoothly the wheels moved around our lab.

Lastly, we determined each seamer’s overall value by considering whether its performance, design, and portability felt worthy of its retail price. For long-term testing, we took the steamers home and evaluated their performance after six months of use.

How to Shop for Clothes Steamers Like a Pro

There are two types of clothing steamers: handheld steamers and large upright steamers. The type you buy should depend on how you want to use it, how long you want to spend steaming, and how much storage space you have available. Handheld clothes steamers are best for those who steam clothing occasionally or don't have the space for a large upright steamer. Large garment steamers work better for those who steam clothing frequently, as these products have larger water tanks and can steam for much longer than handhelds (up to 20 minutes on a handheld vs. an hour on a large steamer).

Keep in mind that a larger steamer isn’t necessarily better. In fact, Pozniak says that he only uses handheld steamers for clothing, drapery, and upholstered furniture—the lighter, the better. “We moved away from the larger units due to size, weight, and water dripping issues,” Pozniak says. “Also, the large steamers take forever to heat up.”

Nelson agrees, adding that handheld steamers remove wrinkles just as efficiently as vertical steamers, but they are designed with portability in mind and are easy to bring in your travel bag .

If you are interested in a large garment steamer, just make sure you have enough storage space for one in your home. Although some large garment steamers can be broken down to become more compact, they will still need about as much space as a stick vacuum cleaner .

“The heat up time is an important selection criteria,” Nelson says. “If you plan to use your steamer in the morning before heading to work, it should not make you late!” Most steamers heat up in just under one minute, but the exact time varies depending on tank size and steamer power. Our best large-capacity pick, the CHI Handheld Garment Steamer for Clothes , heats up the fastest of any steamers on our list, taking just 20 seconds.

Smaller steamers generally heat up more quickly than larger upright steamers, which can take about two minutes to heat up. While the difference isn't huge, it's still important to consider. Similarly, the length of time a steamer can run varies depending on the capacity of its tank. Smaller steamers have a runtime of about eight to 20 minutes, while larger garment steamers can run for one to two hours depending on the setting.

The most important part of a clothes steamer is effectiveness, but extra features can certainly make the steaming process a whole lot easier. Common additional features include more than one steam setting, which will help if you need to get steaming done quickly or have sturdier fabrics. The Conair Turbo ExtremeSteam Handheld Fabric Steamer , our best overall pick, has five heat settings and comes with a variety of accessories.

Some useful accessories to have include crease clips and bristle brush attachments. Crease clips help create creases in your pants without an iron, while a bristle brush attachment helps loosen fabric fibers so that the wrinkles come out more easily. “Having the right accessories makes all the difference in your steaming experience, such as a mini ironing board , which helps make the finishing touches like collars perfect,” Nelson says.

If you're looking at a large garment steamer, look for additional features such as wheels on the bottom of the device, a retractable cord, and an included hanger with hanger clips to hold up your garments more easily.

More Steamers to Consider

Conair Handheld Garment Steamer for Clothes, ExtremeSteam : This low-priced steamer works very well on various materials (including linen) and can be used almost immediately after refilling the water. That said, the water reservoir is very hard to fill, and it’s heavy enough to cause shoulder soreness.

MagicPro Portable Garment Steamer : This steamer is highly effective and easy to use, including when filling up the water tank, but it only has one setting and becomes uncomfortable to use after a few minutes’ time due to its heavy weight.

Questions You Might Ask

What is the difference between a clothes steamer and an iron.

The big difference between a clothes steamer and iron is contact. Irons require direct contact onto fabric to get rid of wrinkles whereas steamers need to be held a short distance away from the fabric to achieve the same result. Irons are great for creating creases in pants, pressing pleated clothing, and getting wrinkles out of thicker fabrics that would take a longer time to tackle, such as jeans or a blazer. Steamers are best for more delicate items or fabrics, such as a silk blouse or a cashmere sweater.

“A hot iron can easily burn or damage more delicate fabrics like silk, satin, cashmere, or polyester,” Nelson says. “Steamers are a much safer option for delicate fabrics while simultaneously refreshing garments, reducing wrinkles and odors, and killing bacteria." She adds that steaming is also more environmentally friendly, since you don’t have to wash the clothes that only need to be refreshed.

So is one necessarily better than the other? According to Pozniak, it depends on the type of fabric: “Cotton and linen will need an iron, while you can use a steamer for silk, wool, and synthetic fabrics. If you do steam cotton and linen, you may get out some of the wrinkles, but those fabrics will never look crisp. You need the steam of an iron to relax the fibers and the heat of the iron to remove the moisture and ‘set’ the fabric, making it look crisp.”

Are there any fabrics you shouldn’t steam?

Pozniak says you should avoid steaming certain fabrics, including leather, suede, fur, vinyl/plastic fabrics, and some embellished garments. Suede, leather, and fur in particular can be severely damaged with steam, he says. You also don't want to get too close to embellishments like buttons, beads, or sequins, as those could be made of plastic and melt.

Can you use a steamer to freshen up clothes between washes?

Absolutely, Nelson says: “Steamers are perfect for freshening up used garments in between washes since the hot steam targets bad odors. Especially when it comes to fabrics that cannot be washed, or items too bulky to wash by hand or in a machine—like a duvet or even a couch —steaming is an excellent alternative."

As a hack, she recommends spritzing your garment with vodka before steaming for extra odor removal .

How do you properly use a clothes steamer?

Always read your product's instruction manual before you proceed, as use can vary between clothes steamers. Typically, you start by filling up the tank with water up to the water line, not above it. Then, turn on the device and wait until the machine starts continually producing steam. Otherwise, there's a risk of water spurting out and getting onto your fabric, which may stain it.

Hang your garments on a hanger and hold them taut while steaming. Keep the steamer an inch away from the garment while steaming—do not put the steamer nozzle directly to your clothes. According to Nelson, you should steam any sort of lining first, and always steam items from top to bottom to produce an optimal effect. Once you're done, wait for your clothes to dry. Throughout the steaming process, make sure that your hands stay far away from the extremely hot steam so you don't get burned.

Should you regularly clean a clothes steamer?

Yes, but how often depends on how much you use it. If you notice that your clothes steamer is not producing steam as easily or as quickly as previous uses, that's when it's time for a cleaning . Clothes steamers get dirty when the minerals from hard water buildup overtime and create a gunk that can clog your nozzle and leave white residue on your clothes.

You can avoid this by using distilled water when you steam. If that isn't an option, you can clean your clothes steamer with a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and distilled water. After you've put the mixture into your water tank, turn on your steamer and let that mixture run until it's about halfway done. Repeat the process until your nozzle lets steam out easily and quickly. Once you're ready to use your steamer again, make sure to do the same process but with just distilled water to make sure that any remaining vinegar is removed.
