Malaysia travel insurance FAQs

Which factors should i consider when searching for a malaysia trip insurance policy.

First, you must always ensure that the policy you want to purchase includes Malaysia in its coverage. Most do, but it is always worth checking. Second, check that your preferred policy covers your trip’s entirety, including your departure and return dates. Third, do you or anyone you intend to insure on your policy have pre-existing medical conditions? If so, you will want to buy a Pre-Existing Condition upgrade. Before purchasing a policy, you must also decide if you intend to do any extreme sports or adventure activities during your trip to Malaysia. If so, read the full policy details to check that it covers your preferred activities. To simplify this process, I like to use the comparison site Squaremouth.com to filter for whichever sports I plan on participating in. Last but not least, I suggest getting a “Cancel for Any Reason” package so that you have the flexibility to change your plans for nearly any reason and still receive a 75% reimbursement on your trip costs.

How many people can I insure on my travel insurance policy?

The limit on personal, single-trip plans is 10 people. However, all of them must have the same travel itineraries and dates and live in the same state. If any of your travel companions are residents of different states or have different travel itineraries than you, they must purchase their own policies. That said, if 8 or more of you are traveling together, you might want to consider getting a group policy. Group policies will get you comparable coverage for a better rate and allow insured travelers to live in different states.

When is the ideal time to purchase Malaysia travel insurance?

I recommend getting Malaysia travel insurance, especially a Trip Cancellation plan, as soon as you book your vacation. Once you have a policy in place, it will financially protect you and your travel companions against unexpected events before and during your vacation. Keep in mind that you only have 14 to 21 days from paying your trip deposit to buy Pre-Existing Condition and Cancel for Any Reason (CFAR) packages. Every travel insurance company has different terms and conditions, so check with your provider for further information.

Is it possible to buy Malaysia trip insurance after my trip has begun?

While getting Malaysia trip insurance before your vacation begins is always best, you can also purchase it during your trip. The caveat is that coverage will commence on the date of purchase and will not apply retroactively to any travel emergencies, medical or otherwise, that you may have endured on your vacation.

Is Malaysia a safe country to visit?

While there is petty theft and some other rare issues to be aware of, Malaysia is generally a safe country to visit. To err on the side of caution, I encourage you to check out the US Department of State’s Malaysia Travel Advisories page for current security warnings and travel information.

Which expenses do trip delay benefits cover?

You can expect covered trip delay expenses, including hotel rooms, meals, internet access and local ground transportation. Each travel insurance plan has a daily reimbursement maximum of $150 to $200, and you will be eligible for these benefits until you use your policy’s stated total benefit.

Will my Malaysia travel insurance reimburse me for a 2-hour flight delay?

Many travel insurance companies have established a minimum trip delay of 3 hours, though every policy is different and may require anywhere from 6 to 12-hour delays. Be aware that trip delay benefits are only available for covered reasons, such as aircraft maintenance issues, severe weather conditions, air traffic issues, etc. Remember to read your policy’s full details for further information.

If I need emergency dental work, will my travel insurance plan cover it?

Depending on your policy, you can expect it to cover anywhere from $100-$750 of emergency dental work on any natural teeth. Coverage typically excludes any work on false teeth, crowns, and bridges. Also, it will not reimburse for any oral exams or routine cleanings. Your policy may also restrict the time window that emergency dental work can be performed to be eligible for reimbursement, so check your plan’s full details for further information.

Common problems tourists experience in Malaysia and how to steer clear:

Malaria and dengue fever, both illnesses transmitted by mosquitoes, can leave you bedridden for weeks and sometimes months. Malaria and dengue can start with similar symptoms, including headaches, severe muscle pain, lower back pain, weakness, fever, nausea, chills, diarrhea, and more. Malaria will leave you feeling full, despite not eating, and it will also cause pain in the upper left side of your abdomen and fatigue. On the other hand, dengue will give you migraine-style headaches, swollen glands and lymph nodes, rashes, pain behind the eyes, and intense pain throughout the entire body. Regardless of what you may have, seek medical care immediately, as both can lead to extreme dehydration and death. Strictly heed all medical guidance and accept that recovery may take a significant amount of time. Use a strong bug spray whenever you’re out and about to minimize your risk of contracting either. It is worth mentioning that Malaysia has many creatures, beyond mosquitoes, that threaten human health. For example, the country is home to several venomous snakes, including some whose bites are fatal. If you ever get bitten, seek medical treatment immediately, as you will need antivenom. Other causes for concern are tarantulas, sac, and black widow spiders. While none of these have a fatal bite, they can cause extreme discomfort and pain. When in doubt, consult a doctor. Another unpleasant affliction many tourists find themselves with is heatstroke/sunstroke. Symptoms of these conditions include rapid breathing, fever, sweats, intense headaches, nausea, vomiting, and disorientation, to name a few. If you experience a combination of these symptoms, get medical help as soon as possible. To avoid developing heatstroke or sunstroke, consume plenty of water, freshly pressed juices, and hydrating foods like juicy fruits and vegetables. Also, be careful not to stay in the sun all day and remember to rest mid-afternoon when it is the hottest and most humid in Malaysia.

Malaysia has such a stunning landscape that many visitors opt to participate in extreme sports and adventure activities. Since accidents inevitably happen, injuries such as open wounds, broken bones or twisted ankles may occur regardless of the precautions taken.

Overall, Malaysia is very safe, and getting mugged is unlikely. However, muggers’ most common technique is cutting an unsuspecting tourist’s bag with a knife. That said, all travelers, particularly in urban and crowded areas, are at risk of being pickpocketed. Be mindful of what you carry and keep valuables close to your body. Do not fall for distractions someone may create so that you take your attention off your possessions. The other significant risk is ATM skimmers attached to ATM card readers that collect account numbers and PIN information. Stick to cash machines within banks to avoid such scams.

Emergency resources for Malaysia

Phone numbers.

You can dial 112 or 999 from a mobile phone to reach the police or ambulance, but for fire and rescue services, dial 994. If you also choose to visit Brunei, dial 993 to contact the police.

US embassy or consulate details

Malaysia has an embassy in Kuala Lumpur. Visit the Embassy’s website for information on citizen services, location, or hours.

Additional information to help travelers have a better experience in Malaysia:

Malaysia’s currency is the Ringgit (MYR). ATMs are common nationwide and rarely charge fees (your bank might). Most banks have a daily withdrawal limit between 1500 and 5000 MYR. While credit and debit cards are widely accepted at higher-end hotels, stores, and restaurants, having plenty of cash on hand for almost everything else are essential.

Malaysia is a very conservative Muslim country, and Sharia Law informs much of what is socially acceptable. Public displays of affection beyond hand-holding are highly frowned upon. When visiting a place of worship, look for signs near the entrance stating rules and expectations. The most common practices involve removing one’s shoes before entering, wearing tops that cover your shoulders and elbows, and wearing pants or skirts that go below the knee. If you are traveling in Malaysia during Ramadan, you are not expected to fast, but eating in public between sunrise and sunset while Muslims are fasting is considered inappropriate. As a result, most smaller restaurants will be closed for breakfast and lunch. The good news is that many tourist-centric areas and larger cities will have places non-Muslims can happily eat out during the day. Resorts and big hotels will also be great options for the first two meals of the day during Ramadan.

Getting Around

Buses in Malaysia are clean, air-conditioned, safe, and frequent. As a result, you can catch a bus almost anywhere in the country at the last minute. You will have several bus companies to choose from, so you will want to compare ticket prices once you get to the bus station. Bus travel in Malaysia is relatively cheap, and all routes generally have planned bathroom breaks and snack/meal stops. Remember that you will not find direct buses to and from Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. Journeys like this will require a bit more planning. Most travelers prefer flying in such instances as it saves a lot of time, and budget airlines operating in the country offer numerous flights daily. Taxis are plentiful in Malaysia, but be aware that most will refuse to use the meter, and some have even removed them from their cars since laws around taxis are not strictly enforced. If you must take a taxi, agree on a flat rate for your trip before getting into the car. As a more affordable and reliable option, many people use Grab, an app-based service like Uber or Lyft, to book rides wherever they need. Passengers can choose to save extra money by sharing the ride (carpool) with other passengers.

The national language of Malaysia is Malay, also known as Bahasa Malaysia. However, it is such a diverse country that other languages are commonly spoken, including English, Mandarin and Tamil. While getting around the country in English should be easy, having some Malay in your toolbox will always go over well with locals.

  • Selamat datang – welcome
  • helo/hi – hello/hi
  • selamat jalan – goodbye
  • selamat pagi – good morning

Malaysian Laws

Recently, Malaysia abolished the mandatory death penalty for several crimes, such as drug trafficking, murder, terrorism, and more. That said, be aware that using or carrying even small amounts of any illegal drug, including marijuana, in Malaysia will be punished with a steep fine and a severe prison sentence. Be aware that Sharia Law governs much of life in Malaysia. While it mainly applies to Muslims, the prohibition against public displays of affection and sexual activity between gay or lesbian couples is illegal for all. It can also spark intense religious outrage or disapproval. If caught, oral sex of any kind can land you in prison for up to 20 years. And going nude or topless (women) at beaches in Malaysia will get you fined and put in jail. In addition to imprisonment, caning is still used as a form of corporal punishment for those who break Malaysian law. Lastly, keep in mind that blasphemy and drunken behavior are banned near courthouses and places of worship, regardless of religion, throughout the country. Overall, they are culturally frowned upon. Keep your words clean, and drink in moderation. It is worth mentioning that different states within Malaysia have their own laws regarding alcohol. Check with your hotel front desk clerk or concierge whether there are laws or cultural expectations that you should know about that are specific to the state you’re visiting.

Tipping is not expected in Malaysia but has become quite commonplace in businesses popular among tourists. In such cafés, eateries, and high-end or western-style restaurants, a 10% service charge is almost always added to the bill. This service charge gets paid directly to the restaurant, and it is a heavily debated topic as to whether the staff ever receives it. Leaving a few extra coins for exceptional service will always be appreciated. However, if your bill does not include a service charge, 10-15% is a great tip. In hotels, 5 MYR per day for the housekeeper is appropriate. You can also tip the porters 3 MYR per bag and the concierge 10 MYR for going above and beyond the call of duty. If you are going on a tour, consider tipping the guide 20-30 MYR for an excellent experience and the tour driver 15-20 MYR.

Why Trust Us

U.S. News evaluates ratings, data and scores of more than 50 travel insurance companies from comparison websites like TravelInsurance.com, Squaremouth and InsureMyTrip, plus renowned credit rating agency AM Best, in addition to reviews and recommendations from top travel industry sources and consumers to determine the Best Travel Insurance for Asia.

Table of Contents

  • Travelex Insurance Services
  • Allianz Travel Insurance

There are several considerations to keep in mind if you're planning a trip to Asia, including the length of time it takes to reach your destination – and the myriad issues that could pop up along the way. A nonstop flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Tokyo takes more than 13 hours, after all, and flying from many other U.S. destinations requires several different stops. Not only will you need to plan for potential cancellations, but you'll want coverage in place if your bags are lost or stolen or a travel delay results in you paying for a hotel stay, meals or both.

Trips to Asia also necessitate travel insurance coverage for emergency medical expenses and potentially even medical evacuation to the nearest hospital or your home country. This is because benefits offered in your U.S. health plan will not apply anywhere in Asia, nor will most benefits from Medicare and other government-sponsored plans.

These are just some of the reasons to get travel insurance well before your trip to Asia is set to depart. While having any travel insurance is better than nothing, U.S. News curated this list of the best travel insurance for Asia from the top providers offering coverage in this space.

Frequently Asked Questions

Travel to Asia requires a considerable commitment in terms of the time you'll spend traveling back and forth and the cost of a trip. If you travel to Asia without travel insurance coverage, you could wind up paying out of pocket for travel essentials if your bags are lost or stolen – or even losing money paid toward flights and hotels if you need to cancel due to an illness or death in your family.

Not having travel insurance also means you'll be on the hook for medical expenses if you become hurt or injured while in Asia. Whether your trip to the continent includes stops in Japan , Thailand , Vietnam or elsewhere, having travel insurance is the only way to protect against travel mishaps and the financial losses they cause.

Experts say travel insurance is crucial: Here's how it actually works

travel malaysia insurance

Whether you're a frequent traveler or setting plans for an upcoming vacation, unexpected circumstances such as bad weather can cast a cloud over a trip, which is why experts suggest investing in travel insurance.

Recently, Hurricane Beryl marked an "early and violent start" to the typical storm season. NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad confirmed in a mid-season update earlier this month that Beryl was "the earliest category-5 Atlantic hurricane on record" -- and peak storm season is right around the corner.

With increased risk of disruptions during hurricane season through November and more people opting for shoulder season getaways after avoiding summer crowds , travelers should prepare for such worse-case scenarios to avoid losing money on hotels, activities and other bookings.

Everything you need to know about travel insurance

With an array of options in the market and various individual reasons to invest in a plan that protects your purchases, "Good Morning America" tapped top industry experts to provide insights to help ensure that even if your next getaway gets rained out, your bank account won't be drained as well.

"Things can go wrong in ways that you can't begin to imagine. And if you're unlucky and unfortunate enough to be in that position, you don't want to come back from your trip with a debt to pay off as well," Daniel Green, trip insurance expert and co-founder of Faye Travel Insurance, told "GMA."

Understand the basics before you buy bespoke coverage

Katy Nastro, spokesperson for Going.com, formerly known as Scott's Cheap Flights, told "GMA" that first and foremost, folks need to "understand all the ways in which you are already protected before dishing out for things you don't need."

travel malaysia insurance

"When it comes to flight insurance, under federal law, you are already protected to get a full refund or rebooked on a significantly delayed flight or cancellation, regardless of the reason," she said. "With new regulations that airlines must comply with by the end of October, seeing your refund back to your payment method will get a lot faster and more seamless."

Nastro said "many travel credit cards already have built-in trip insurance that can protect you when the unexpected happens," citing perks from the Chase Sapphire Reserve card that provide "reimbursements up to $10,000 per person for pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses when an interruption happens."

You should always buy insurance for one simple reason -- when you start thinking -- 'I hope we have insurance,' it's one minute too late

"These cards often pay sooner than the airlines do for expenses due to misplaced bags," she added.

Nastro also suggested to check on coverage across state lines with any existing medical or car insurance policies, which could help cut down on costs.

"Specifically, when it comes to medical insurance, medical care around the world is generally a fraction of the cost compared to what it is in the U.S. So, while it could be good to have if you need stitches in Vietnam, it probably won't break the bank," she said.

Because travel insurance is subjective, Nastro said "it's worth considering when you exhaust your existing coverages to see where you might have some gaps."

How does travel insurance work and what's actually covered?

"A great example is when you have a trip with multiple components that aren't purchased together, like a flight and cruise," Nastro told "GMA." "The cruise won't wait when your flight has been rebooked for the next day, so in this scenario, it might be worth looking at insurance on the cruise portion. You can typically add insurance after the fact, but reading the fine print is critical."

"Trip or travel insurance tends to be cheaper to buy, but is restricted to what is actually covered and often has red tape in terms of getting that reimbursement. For example, if you have an illness and need to cancel your trip, policies might require a doctor's note," she continued.

She added, "Travel insurance with 'cancel for any reason' policies tends to be more expensive to purchase, but more inclusive in terms of what is considered a 'covered' reason. The biggest caveat is that they offer a partial refund -- 50% to 75% of nonrefundable expenses."

When it comes to weather, she reiterated that reading the fine print is critical, because "the coverage typically offered is for extreme weather and scenarios where the operator cannot operate for 24 hours or more, so a typical summer thunderstorm won't make the cut."

travel malaysia insurance

Green added that, generally, if a customer buys travel insurance from an airline provider, since the carrier "doesn't know all the details of your trip" beyond the price and date of the flight, "if you're renting a car and traveling around -- or staying in a $4,000 hotel, you might only have $1,000 worth of insurance because at the checkout screen of American or United or Delta, they just didn't know about those costs."

"That's why I think it makes a lot more sense to buy insurance directly from either a website portal or an agent that can show you the main limits, so you know all the things you spent are covered as part of the policy," he said.

As Nastro pointed out, payment for claims can become a sticky situation, which is why Green helped craft an more seamless way to alleviate issues by providing the reassurance of immediate reimbursement: "If you have Apple Pay or Google Pay, you can access that money instantly after the claim is settled," he told "GMA."

Green co-founded Faye just before the COVID-19 pandemic sent the travel industry into a tailspin, but said now, "the concern on the American mind more than anything is who's gonna pay for this? Especially in these days of inflation, if you're paying significant amounts of money for travel, and something goes wrong, you'd like to at least be made whole."

3 categories to consider for travel insurance coverage

Green explained that travel insurance can generally be broken into three categories: your investment in the trip, your belongings such as luggage and passports, and your health.

For anyone booking travel on their own, without a travel agent or adviser, Green highlighted the difference between buying travel insurance directly versus clicking "yes" on an app or checkout screen.

"You're not always being offered insurance that's in your best interest if you're just hoping that whatever your credit card comes with, or whatever your airline gives you at the end of the checkout is going to provide everything you need," he said.

He noted that one important tip for any type of travel coverage purchase is "the earlier you tell your insurance company that something has gone wrong, the more likely it is that they can help you while you're on your trip -- and helping sometimes means paying for expenses so that you don't have to be out of pocket and get reimbursement."

Weather-specific products for travel inconveniences

Products like Sensible Weather offer more specific elements to cover scenarios such as rain during a beach vacation or lack of snow for a ski trip, which may derail plans.

"The idea of travel inconvenience payments, it just takes the sting out of things," Green said. "In those scenarios, you just get a fixed, agreed amount of money -- sort of no questions asked -- You just have to prove that you actually experienced the loss in question, and then you get the full amount."

travel malaysia insurance

"You should always buy insurance for one simple reason -- because usually at the point when you start thinking to yourself, 'Wow, I hope we have insurance,' it's one minute too late," Green said. "Hurricane season is the perfect example of that. Once a hurricane is named, you generally can't make any claims related to the hurricane if you didn't already buy a policy."

"What we're learning about the current hurricane season is the weather is becoming unpredictable all the time," Green said. "We've heard about days where the weather was so hot in Phoenix that airplanes couldn't take off from the tarmac, hurricanes coming sooner than expected, or power failures causing an airport to not be able to operate -- and because those things are so unpredictable, playing the game of wait and see before buying your insurance rarely make sense versus justbuying it around the time you buy your trip and not having to worry about that aspect again."

How much plans cost and limitations

"There is no one size fits all when it comes to travel insurance," Green noted.

However, he said "there are rules of thumb" that industry experts often follow: "You should be willing to spend up to 10% of the cost of your trip on your insurance."

"The two biggest factors that usually affect the cost of your insurance is your age at the time of purchase, not at the time of travel, and the value of your trip," he said, adding that "every company is different."

  • The average travel insurance premium this week is $299.14, up about 0.58% compared to last week.
  • For travel in the United States, the average premium is $180 to $360.
  • Travel insurance protects against delayed baggage, trip cancellation, and more.

The average cost of travel insurance fluctuates throughout the year, based on demand and whether or not school's in session. Also keep in mind that where you're traveling and how many people are taking the trip will affect your exact premium.

Understanding Travel Insurance

Travel insurance plans can cover both domestic and international travel. It could protect against something as familiar as delayed baggage (experts estimate 85% of lost luggage is returned to its owner within 48 hours) or as complicated as trip cancellation.

The benefits and limitations of travel insurance vary based on the company and plan. Above all else, this insurance coverage offers peace of mind.

Some credit cards offer a limited amount of travel insurance annually. If you need clarification on what your credit card offers, contact your provider to verify. These plans are great for cancellations and interruptions but may not cover more costly losses associated with unexpected medical expenses or emergency evacuations.

Individual travel insurance plans include this and much more. Travel insurance protects travelers from the unexpected when away from home.

Average Cost of Travel Insurance by Destination

Some countries are naturally more expensive travel destinations due to higher flight and lodging costs, which could increase travel insurance costs. Travel insurance will generally cost 5% to 10% of your total trip price, according to SquareMouth travel insurance .

Here's how the prices stack up:

How Far in Advance to Purchase Travel Insurance

According to an AAA travel survey , 88% of travelers say that reimbursement after a trip cancellation is the most valuable benefit of trip insurance.

According to data gathered by SquareMouth in the last six months, travelers tend to purchase trip cancellation travel insurance 53 days before their trip. Meanwhile, travelers without trip cancellation insurance will buy a policy approximately 16 days before their trip. Regardless of when you buy, cancellation protection can kick in to protect you against the unexpected.

Average Cost of Travel Insurance by Age

A traveler's age is a significant factor in determining the cost of travel insurance. The older a traveler is, the higher travel insurance premiums are. For instance, a senior traveler may need more insurance for health-related emergencies than a millennial.

When calculating your travel insurance premium, travel insurance providers consider the likelihood of a medical emergency.

Travel Insurance Rate Tips

Travel insurance rates through most providers fall between 4% and 8% of the total trip cost. Like the cost of flights, cruises, etc., rates may vary substantially based on the season, your original location, your destination, and other factors. This week, the average cost of a policy was close to $300.

To save money on travel insurance, tailor your policy to your specific needs and avoid unnecessary extras. You should also shop around to compare quotes from multiple insurers. Opting for an annual plan if you're a frequent traveler, checking existing coverages from other insurance policies or credit card benefits, and choosing a policy with a higher deductible can significantly lower your premiums. Always read the fine print to understand your coverage fully, ensuring you don't pay for redundant or irrelevant features.

To find affordable travel insurance, consider using online comparison websites like SquareMouth or InsureMyTrip to see rates from various providers. Other ways to save include purchasing directly from insurance companies, exploring package deals from travel agencies or airlines, utilizing included coverage from credit card benefits, and checking for discounts through membership organizations such as AAA or AARP.

How To Find Cheap Travel Insurance for Your Next Trip | Money

Travel insurance can cover your medical bills if you experience an injury or illness during your holiday. Depending on the policy you select, the best travel insurance policies can also cover trip interruption, lost baggage, rental car damage and emergency evacuations.

If you’ve invested a good deal of money on pre-paid, non-refundable travel expenses or are planning an extended vacation, you don’t want to leave on a trip without protecting yourself from the unforeseen. But you also don’t want to overpay for that sense of security.

Read on to learn how to find cheap travel insurance for your next trip and get tips on buying the right coverage to meet your needs.

How much does travel insurance cost?

The cost of travel insurance varies significantly. According to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association, you can expect to pay between 4% and 8% of your total trip cost on a travel insurance policy. The exact price will depend on the trip’s length, your age and the coverage amount you select, among other factors.

For example, if your trip costs $5,000, you’ll pay between $200 and $400 for travel insurance. However, if you’re older or planning to be out of the country for a prolonged period, you can expect your insurance premium to reflect those risks.

You may also pay more or less depending on the type of coverage you purchase. For instance, a policy with trip cancellation and medical evacuation coverage will likely cost more than one that provides travel medical benefits only.

What is considered cheap for travel insurance?

Your definition of affordability may be very different from that of other travelers. So, if you want to find the least expensive travel insurance option, there’s no getting around comparison shopping. Cheap travel insurance can be any policy that affords the coverage you need at a lower price point than other options.

Say you’re traveling with professional equipment like cameras. Purchasing a medical-only travel insurance policy could be more affordable than buying one that provides generous coverage for baggage loss and personal effects. However, going for the cheaper option may result in higher out-of-pocket costs if your bags are lost or stolen.

How to find cheap travel insurance for an upcoming trip

Finding the most affordable travel insurance will require some legwork. Here are some tips to make your search easier.

1. Only purchase the travel insurance coverage you need

Buying more insurance coverage than you need will increase your expenses. With that in mind, it’s best to start by understanding what travel insurance covers and then defining your needs.

Most travel insurers offer different plan tiers with various levels of coverage. Plans that cover more scenarios and offer higher coverage limits will cost more. Purchasing add-ons like rental car coverage will further increase the cost of your policy.

So, for example, you probably don’t need a policy that covers baggage delay or flight cancellation if you’re driving over the border into Canada. Instead, you can save money by selecting a more basic plan offering only emergency medical and personal effects coverage.

Similarly, paying for an annual travel insurance policy doesn’t make sense if you only leave the country once or twice a year for a couple of days each time. It might sound like a good idea because these plans often offer cheaper medical travel insurance coverage per trip, but they will cost more if you don’t travel frequently enough to make them worthwhile.

2. Choose the right type of policy for your trip

If you purchase travel insurance, make sure to select a plan that covers the risks you’re likely to face during your trip. For instance, you might go with a policy that covers missed connections and trip delays if your travel plans are complicated and involve numerous stops.

Similarly, if you’re participating in high-risk activities such as rock climbing or scuba diving, look for a policy that covers these, as not all plans do. And if you are taking a cruise, a cruise travel insurance policy can cover risks unique to this form of travel, such as medical emergencies that necessitate an airlift to an on-shore medical facility.

3. Check whether you already have some form of rental car coverage

You’ll need rental car insurance if you’re renting a car during your travels. Depending on your destination, you may already be covered under your car insurance policy. That could be the case if you’re traveling to Canada in a rental vehicle, for example. However, if you’re traveling to Mexico, you’ll need a separate policy.

Similarly, your car insurance policy from back home typically won’t cover you overseas. In that case, you can purchase insurance from a rental car company at your destination or check whether your credit card offers such protection. Many of the best travel credit cards include rental car coverage. If your card does, check whether that coverage is primary or secondary. Secondary coverage applies after you’ve exceeded the limits of any other applicable insurance policies.

With this in mind, you may not need to purchase rental car coverage from your travel insurance company. If your travel insurer offers you a better deal on a collision damage waiver — which is what travel insurers generally offer — call your rental car company first to see if it accepts this form of coverage, as some companies do not.

4. Check your credit card for travel protection benefits

Your credit card may also offer travel protection benefits beyond rental car coverage. Depending on your credit card, you could receive reimbursement for baggage loss and delays, trip interruptions and cancellations, and travel accidents. Some cards also provide emergency medical, dental, and even medical evacuation coverage.

However, every card is different, so contact your credit card issuer to learn what it covers and whether limits and restrictions apply (and they generally do). For example, only trips you purchased with the card would be covered, and you may be required to meet a deductible before coverage kicks in.

Just as with a travel insurance policy, you’ll have to cover any expenses out of pocket and then submit a claim for reimbursement. You’ll also be required to provide documentation to support your claim, such as medical bills. So, whether you purchase travel insurance or rely on your credit card’s travel benefits, always budget for contingencies.

5. Consider purchasing group coverage

Not all companies offering group travel insurance policies consider the travelers’ ages when pricing these plans. That means group coverage may be more affordable than buying individual policies for each group member. If you’re traveling with family, friends or colleagues, shop for group travel insurance instead.

Just keep in mind that group policies aren’t as customizable and coverage limits may be lower than what you need.

6. Comparison shop

We really can’t stress this enough, but comparison shopping is the best way to get a good deal on any kind of insurance, even travel insurance. If you don’t have time to do the legwork yourself, a travel insurance marketplace can help you quickly compare options from various insurers in a single place. It can also give you a better idea of how much travel insurance will cost you .

One possible drawback of doing business with an insurance marketplace is that they don’t partner with all providers, so you could be missing out on a good deal from a carrier the comparison site doesn’t do business with.

Is cheap travel insurance good?

Whether an affordable insurance policy is adequate will depend on what it includes and the specifics of your trip. If you’re flying to multiple countries, a cheap policy that doesn’t cover flight interruption may not suffice. However, that policy may suffice if you drive over the border for a few days and only require basic emergency medical coverage.

A cheap policy that covers all of your main risks is better for you than an expensive plan that doesn’t, so it all comes down to the coverages you need to best protect yourself. When searching for a policy, consider where you’re going, what you’ll be doing and how long you’ll be gone.

Summary of Money’s guide to finding cheap travel insurance for your next trip

Planning a trip takes time, and finding the ideal travel insurance policy will add to your workload. However, travel insurance can give you great peace of mind during your travels by helping you protect your savings. Moreover, affordable options exist.

To save even more on travel insurance, define your coverage needs, check whether you already have other forms of insurance or travel benefits that can protect any aspects of your trip and comparison shop.

KUALA LUMPUR, The Life Insurance Association of Malaysia (LIAM) on Wednesday launched the Starter Pack Insurance Fund (SPIF) through its i-MULA 50 initiative, designed to make life insurance more accessible and affordable for 100,000 eligible Malaysians.

LIAM chief executive officer Mark O’Dell said the initiative provides a one-off RM50 subsidy for each qualifying life insurance policy, with coverage including benefits for death, total and permanent disability, critical illness, medical expenses and hospital income.

"With SPIF, we are allocating an RM5mil fund to benefit 100,000 eligible Malaysians, focusing on youth, young families and first-time buyers to own a life insurance protection plan at an affordable premium by subsidising RM50 for each policy,” he said in his welcoming remarks at the SPIF launch event here.

Also present were Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) deputy governor Adnan Zaylani Mohamad Zahid and LIAM president Raymond Lew.

O’Dell said Wednesday's (Aug 28) event was in celebration of LIAM’s 50th Anniversary and highlighted the significance of launching the i-MULA 50 during National Month, describing it as a time to reflect on the nation’s journey and LIAM’s contribution to nation-building.

Meanwhile, in a statement, LIAM said under the i-MULA 50 programme, 11 life insurance companies would be offering 31 affordable protection plans starting Wednesday and would run until the RM5mil fund is fully utilised.

"To maintain affordability, the annual premiums for these plans range from RM75 to RM600. Policyholders are required to make an annual premium payment of at least RM25 to receive the RM50 subsidy, ensuring that policyholders fully understand the insurance product they plan to purchase,” the statement read.

At the event, Lew said the insurance and takaful industry, in consultation with BNM, has conducted a study in 2022 on the B40 and M40 segments to design tailored microinsurance products for the low-income market, where the insights from the research have led to the launch of SPIF.

He said the study identified key risks like accidents, health issues, income loss and bereavement, guiding insurers to develop affordable products that addressed those needs and promoted inclusive growth.

"Featuring low premium insurance plans and customised products from Perlindungan Tenang initiative, this fund provides basic life insurance coverage at subsidised premiums, making it more accessible, especially for first-time buyers who may have previously found insurance cost unaffordable,” he added.

Besides that, Lew said LIAM, over the years, has been instrumental in promoting financial protection and planning through education and contributing to the community and national economic development.

Therefore, he said the association is dedicated to continuing its efforts to increase insurance penetration and financial protection among Malaysians for years to come. - Bernama
