Tips for Buying Travel Toiletries

Know which items you truly need.

When you pack for a trip, know you won’t necessarily need to have all the comforts of home with you. Prioritize your daily essentials including toothpaste, soap, and deodorant. Consider which items you’ll realistically use, and which ones you can do without (for instance, you may want hairspray for a trip to Paris but not for a camping excursion). If you’re staying at a hotel, think about items you may not be picky about (such as shampoo and body wash) that may be provided by the facility free of charge. 

Invest in reusable containers

You may find miniature versions of your favorite products adorable to look at, but they’re not the most sustainable or cost-effective option. Plus, your favorite brands may not even have travel-size picks available. Consider investing in reusable containers in TSA-friendly sizes. That way, you can fill them with the full-sized toiletries you already buy and you can take just as much as you need for the length of your trip. 

Use a clear, ziplock bag to store your liquids and prevent leaks. This also makes it easier to see what you have and comply with airport security regulations. Try to stock up on multi-tasking products (for instance, a lotion that can be used both on your face and body) so you’ll have to pack fewer items. Use reusable travel-sized containers that are 3.4 ounces or less for any larger items that you want to pack in a carry-on.  

Pay attention to TSA travel restrictions and make sure all your carry-on items comply with the official 3-1-1 liquids rule , which states that you can bring containers equal to or smaller than 3.4 ounces that fit in a single quart-size resealable bag. When possible, try subbing in solid alternatives to liquid toiletries (for example, a bar of soap over a liquid body wash), which are not subject to liquid restrictions and take up less space.

Packing your toiletries (including deodorant) does not have to be challenging! TFG readers had some great tips and tricks to share about how you can pack your products for maximum space.

TFG reader shared that to save space you can take a portion of your deodorant instead of the whole stick. One reader instructed “Take a chunk of your deodorant container, melt it in the microwave, and pour it into a smaller container. You can find empty containers on Amazon.” 

If you don’t have an empty container, another reader suggests using an empty chapstick container instead. 

And, if you’re working with a gel instead, another reader said that you “squeeze it out into little travel plastic screw jars. Saves sooo much space. (It’s also an eye opener to see how little there is in those giant plastic applicator bottles it normally comes in).”

Deodorant and anti-perspirants are available worldwide, but the quality of local products varies widely. If you’re planning to pack your deodorant, instead of buy when you land, here are the best options for travel deodorants.

You know when transit stinks , but not only because of the long hours you’re spending en route? A smelly neighbor can can make a long trip feel even longer, and you, as a conscious traveler, want to avoid being that person for those in your midst.

Can You Bring Deodorant On a Plane? & Other Considerations

Americans use deodorant more than any other nationality worldwide (although Brazil is a close second). So, as a traveler who strives to be odor-free, where can you maintain your western standards? Where can you fly in and buy deodorant?

Most destinations in Europe and across Oceania are safe for access to deodorant, including brands that you’re probably familiar with. How to shop for a car vacuum

Depending on the fabric in your car and how much surface area needs to be covered, selecting a vacuum can be tough. The cleaning and vacuum experts we spoke to gave us some tips on things to look out for.

• Attachments: Both of our experts agree the crevice tool is the best attachment head for a car since it fits in spots incredibly hard to clean. “Anything that’s gonna have an attachment that allows you to get into the narrow spots or one of those holds attachments is a good thing to keep an eye out for,” says Koch.
• Dustbin capacity : You should also pay attention to the size of your dustbin. If you find that you have a large vehicle that isn’t able to hold all of the dust and debris you collect, make sure to take that into consideration. If you have to frequently empty out your dustbin you may want a larger option for your vehicle.
• Cyclonic suction: A big difference between vacuums that do and don’t have cyclonic suction is the bag. Vacuums with cyclonic suction are bagless and suck debris into a dust bin. Volume in the bin is often much less compared to a bag, but it’s easier to empty a bin. As for suction power, air spins like a vortex, separating particles from the air while cleaning.
