Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped

trek powerfly mudguards

With the Powerfly FS 9 Equipped, Trek want to unite supposed opposites and send standard bike categories into a well-deserved retirement. With its great all-round qualities, the Powerfly FS 9 Equipped has already secured victory in last year’s trekking ebike group test. But what does Trek’s ebike do better than other e-trekking bikes?

For an overview of the test fleet head to the group test: 9 fully equipped ebikes for trekking and adventure in our test

trek powerfly mudguards

The € 7,299 Trek Powerfly FS 9 unites supposed opposites and covers a wide range of applications. It’s equally suitable for commuting as for touring, both on and off road. Trek’s full-suspension ebike boasts a stylish aluminium frame, sporty silhouette and high-quality workmanship, all topped off with a flashy paint finish. The powerful Bosch Performance Line CX motor packs a punch in all situations, making it easy to negotiate steep ramps. This draws its power from a 625 Wh battery, which can be removed from the side of the down tube and carried to a charging point using a practical handle.

trek powerfly mudguards

With the Powerfly FS, you can replace the linear Tour support mode with the progressive eMTB Lite mode, which is optimised to provide increased range but still churns out plenty of power when needed. In times when almost everyone has a smartphone on them at all times, the Bosch SmartphoneHub allows you to use yours as a display for your Powerfly FS. This enables many clever functions such as a navigation, music player and call management, which can be controlled remotely via a bar-mounted remote.

trek powerfly mudguards

While the pannier rack with 25 kg load rating and practical MIK adapter makes it easy to attach panniers to your Trek Powerfly FS 9, the low(ish) permissible total weight of 136 kg calls for prudence when packing. A Supernova MINI2 headlight and E3 tail light ensure excellent visibility. Not as excellent is the rest of the everyday equipment, including the short plastic mudguards and flimsy kickstand. The Trek delivers plenty of riding fun and intuitive handling on long tours and yet is easy to maneuver even in more demanding riding situations. The 2.4″ Bontrager LT4 Expert tires ensure good traction and comfort both on hardpack and loose terrain but tend to clog up easily in muddy conditions. Bigger impacts are taken care of by the sporty and efficient suspension, which controls 120/100 mm travel at the front and rear, respectively.

Tuning Tip: upgrade to longer mudguards

The Trek Powerfly FS 9 Equipped unites supposed opposites and covers a wide range of applications, impressing with its intuitive handling and excellent suspension tune. The everyday equipment sensibly complements its range of applications while the Bosch SmartphoneHub offers several clever features. If you’re looking for a good all-rounder for urban commutes and weekend tours that also keeps going when the tarmac ends, the Powerfly FS 9 Equipped is an excellent choice.

Trek Powerfly 2019 Review – now with a carbon frame and fully-integrated battery

trek powerfly mudguards

The Trek Powerfly has become a true eMTB classic and has undergone several updates over the years. To keep up with the competition for the new season Trek equipped the latest version of their popular bike with an integrated battery and also introduced two fine carbon versions of the Powerfly LT. Here you’ll find all the details!

trek powerfly mudguards

A few years back Trek did a great job and gave the Powerfly a well thought-out and very well balanced geometry — which once again fully convinced us in our latest test . Sure there are more nimble bikes on the market but the new Powerfly strikes a great balance between uphill and downhill performance. For the new season Trek sticks to the proven geometry and rear-end of the previous version but ads a fully integrated, removable battery. On top of this the new model is available in two carbon versions and the spec has been optimised too. All Plus models are now rolling on sturdy, grippy Bontrager XR4 tires and all Powerfly LT models feature powerful four-piston brakes.

trek powerfly mudguards

Here are the highlights of the 2018 Powerfly line up at a glance:

– New fully integrated, removable battery – Two Powerfly LT carbon models – eMTB-specific fork on all Powerfly LT models – Four-piston brakes on all LT models – Bontrager XR4 tires on all Plus models – More colour options – SRAM Eagle groupset on some models – Robust RockShox Revelation on the Powerfly FS7 model – Updated Bontrager Line dropper – Powerfly Sport-Hardtail with lights and mudguards

Trek RIB: probably the best fully-integrated and removable battery on the market

There is a vast choice of eMTBs with integrated battery on the market but only a few systems are thoroughly thought-out and refined down to the last detail. Some bikes come with super long batteries, on others the battery can’t be locked and can only be removed with the help of tools. And then there are systems made up of several parts (battery and cover). A battery can weigh up to 4 kg so when you remove it you have to be really careful not to drop it on the floor and break it.

trek powerfly mudguards

You can tell that the engineers at Trek gave the development of the RIB system (removable integrated battery) a lot of thought. The battery and the cover are one solid unit and the 500 Wh Bosch Powertube battery can be removed to the right hand-side. The system makes sense as most of us tend to lay their bike on its left side to avoid damage to the rear derailleur. Once you released the battery with the key it will pop out by a few centimetres; after depressing the big button you can remove the battery completely. An integrated handle makes the whole procedure easier – what an ingenious system! In addition the new integration allows you to place a bottle cage and a large drinking bottle in the main frame triangle.

trek powerfly mudguards

The new carbon frame allows for less weight and sleeker integration

trek powerfly mudguards

The new carbon frame proves just how much Trek believed in the geometry of the previous Powerfly LT model. The Americans could have revised the geometry for the latest update of the Powerfly but decided to stick to the familiar and very popular concept instead. Therefore the main advantages of the new carbon frame are a weight reduction of around 650 g and the significantly sleeker integration and appearance of the bike. Trek has equipped the top tube with a mounting option for a Wolftooth B-RAD system. The system allows you to quickly attach either an inner-tube or a tool to the bike and forget about carrying uncomfortable backpacks on short rides. In typical Trek style all Powerfly models come with a RE:aktiv rear-shock and ABP-link which keeps the suspension fully active even under braking. The geometry can be adjusted between two positions via a flip chip.

trek powerfly mudguards

Revised spec for the Trek Powerfly LT Alu

Even if you won’t buy one of the carbon versions with the Powerfly LT you’ll get quite a few performance upgrades in the coming season. In addition to the battery integration Trek has adapted the spec of the bikes. All Powerfly LT models feature an eBike-specific fork and powerful four-piston brakes. Trek also redesigned the Bontrager Line dropper seat post and used the new SRAM Eagle groupset. Compared to the cheaper Schwalbe Nobby Nic Performance tires the new Bontrager XR4 offer noticeably more grip and puncture protection.

trek powerfly mudguards

The Trek Powerfly LT 2018 on the Trail

We had the opportunity to test the Powerfly LT 9 at Trek’s launch-event on the gorgeous and varied trails in the Swiss Heidi-Land. Compared to the previous model the handling of the new version has changed very little. The better grip of the new tires might be the most noticeable change on the new version of the Powerfly. Like its predecessor the new Powerfly is a confident climber. The steep seat angle and rather long chainstays will get you at the top of steep climbs without a problem.

trek powerfly mudguards

On the downhill the Powerfly feels safe and balanced. It’s not the nimblest bike out there but it’s still very easy to ride. You won’t have to shift your body weight too much to get good grip on both wheels and the bike will always feel pleasantly predictable. But if you’re looking for a very lively super nimble bike the Powerfly might not be able to fully satisfy you. Quick direction changes and narrow sections require a very proactive riding style and quite a lot of strength.

trek powerfly mudguards

Our take on the new Trek Powerfly LT

Good stuff made better! Trek didn’t reinvent the wheel but the new Powerfly is a better version of the popular bike with many added improvements. The handling is very similar to the previous version. However you can clearly feel the performance upgrade of the tires. Unfortunately we didn’t get the chance to ride the new carbon version yet but even just the look of it has already convinced us. We’re not sure whether the carbon upgrade is worth the extra money but since our purchasing decisions are often driven by aesthetics and emotions we think that the new Powerfly Carbon will have certainly find many fans.

Bontrager NCS Fenders / Mudguards review – easy to fit and effective protection

Elegant mudguards made from tough polycarbonate with built-in mudflaps

Image shows Bontrager NCS Mudguards

Stays with built in adjustability are the key feature of these mudguards - but they’re also tough, well-made and among the longest (and therefore most protective) you can get.

Easy to fit to most bikes

Plenty of length to keep your feet and your riding companions dry

Sensible price

Mounting can be tricky on disc-brake bikes

No breakaway brackets

  • Construction
  • Fitting and ride
  • Value and conclusion

Bontrager NCS fenders/mudguards have a clever trick up their stays: instead of trimming them to make them fit your bike properly, you adjust the length of the stays by sliding the two parts up or down as necessary, using the built-in clamps to then lock them in place.

The clue’s in the TLA: NCS stands for No-Cut Strut. It’s so much less hassle than hacksawing or dremelling that it’s amazing to me that so many of even the best fenders/mudguards don't work like this.

Bontrager NCS Mudguards: construction

Image shows the Bontrager NCS Mudguards mounted on a bike

The main body of the guards is made of polycarbonate, the stays and other metalware are stainless steel. Flared rubber mudflaps at the rear ends help to reduce spray over your feet and anyone behind you. The rear guard has a Blendr light mount for one of Bontrager's Flare lights, though user reviews on Trek’s site suggest it’s been a bit fragile for some folks.

Image shows the Bontrager NCS Mudguards mounted on a bike

Bontrager offers four versions of the NCS fenders / mudguards: 26 x 1.75-2.25in for mountain bikes; 700c x 18-25mm; 700c x 28-35mm; and 700c x 35-45mm. The width indicates the tyre size that’ll best fit under them; our samples are 28-35mm and fit over 30mm tyres with plenty of space.

American readers can choose black, white or a screaming bright yellow; in the UK, it’s any colour you like as long as it’s black.

Image shows the Bontrager NCS Mudguards mounted on a bike

Bontrager NCS Mudguards: fitting & ride

While they swerve the stay-trimming step of most mudguard-fitting jobs, they’re still mudguards, which means you have to find points on your bike to bolt them into place near the bottom bracket, at the seatstay bridge and the fork crown.

And you also need sufficient space for them above your tyres. Bontrager’s claim that they “install in seconds” is, well, optimistic. Get yourself a beverage and give yourself an hour so you can feel smug if you do manage to do it quicker.

Image shows the Bontrager NCS Mudguards mounted on a bike

For rim-brake bikes with appropriate eyelets, they’re straightforward to just bolt into place, then tweak the stays so they’re central over the tyre. If you have disc brakes, Bontrager offers a disc brake adapter kit for the fork that comprises two long bolts and two tubular spacers. I improvised with some bolts and spacers I had kicking around.

Image shows the Bontrager NCS Mudguards mounted on a bike

Some users report needing additional hardware to get the NCS Mudguards to fit, in particular the Trek Road Disc Fork Fender Hardware kit that’s necessary to fit them to certain models of Trek road bikes.

Once they’re fitted, they get on with unobtrusively doing the job of keeping you dry. I have a set on one bike in my fleet that’s been in regular use for about five years and still Just Works.

The key feature, those adjustable-length stays, undoubtedly brilliant. Nobody likes putting on face protection and power-tooling the hell out of something more than me, but it’s surely over the top to just fit mudguards.

Image shows the Bontrager NCS Mudguards mounted on a bike

Bontrager NCS Mudguards: value and conclusion

If you want maximum protection, and don’t mind a bit more work to fit them, then SKS Longboard guards ($56.99/£43.00) reach nearer the ground at the front and rear to better control spray on your feet and riding companions.  Other rivals include the Portland Design Works Full Metal Fenders which are absolutely brilliant — but $129.00/£100.00 per pair.

At 625g the Bontrager NCS Mudguards are quite heavy, so if you’re trying to build up the world’s lightest winter bike then you’ll want to look elsewhere. And you’re also a bit mad, but who am I to judge?

The Bontrager NCS guards provide excellent coverage at a sensible price and being able to fit them without cutting anything makes life easier, and also means you can transfer them to your next bike. It’s a thumbs-up from me; just make sure you pick up any extra fittings you might need when you buy them.

  • Warranty: 30-Day Unconditional Guarantee
  • Material: Polycarbonate with stainless steel fittings
  • Sizes: 26 x 1.75-2.25in; 700c x 18-25mm; 700c x 28-35mm; 700c x 35-45mm

Best mountain bike mudguards: keep your eyes clear of mud and spray

Danny Milner

  • Danny Milner
  • January 10, 2024

If you want to ride fast along wet trails you'll need a front mudguard to keep your vision clear. With that in mind, here are the best mountain bike front mudguards on the market.

To keep your vision clear in wet and muddy conditions, a front mudguard is a must-have. They’re not particularly cool, or sexy, but they do an essential job in muddy conditions, keeping dirt and water out of your vision so you can see where you’re going. It also makes sense to pair a mudguard with a set of the best mountain bike glasses and goggles too.

For dynamic riding and advanced trails, we wouldn’t recommend a rear mudguard. These tend to be vulnerable to damage and will often impede your freedom of movement on the bike. Better to get a good pair of waterproof trousers instead.

  • Slightly more expensive than other options
  • Less seal protection than RRP and Mucky Nutz

The latest addition to our rundown of the best mudguards on the market, and this SKS Mudrocker goes straight to the top. It boasts a decent length that’s on par with rivals such as the RRP Proguard Standard, but stretches the width a touch to increase clearance without reducing protection. And yet it still squeezes under the tightest fork crowns, such as the RockShox SID (it won’t work with backwards arches though). Three broad velcro straps let you secure it to the fork, which makes installation and removal quick. And because they are silicone-backed, they don’t slide around, so the mudguard remains totally stable. There’s also a bolt-on adaptor included if you want a clean look and don’t need to take the mudguard on and off regularly. A great mudguard from a reputable brand.

RRP Proguard Max

RRP Proguard Max is solid, offers loads of protection, and keeps mud away from delicate fork seals.

2. RRP Proguard Max

Looks good and highly effective.

Weight: 145g | Rating: 10/10

  • Wheel hugging coverage
  • Looks neat and unobtrusive
  • Seal protection
  • Tad fiddly to set up perfectly

The ProGuard from RRP is a rigid polypropylene guard available in two lengths – standard and Max. The standard is a decent size and offers good protection, but for UK use we’d recommend the Max, which extends 21mm further at the front and 68mm further at the back and really stops all spray. There’s a three-point fixing and multiple holes for finding the perfect fit depending on your fork. This does require punching through the plastic, and a bit of guesswork to find the right ones.

We love the extended sides, that keep dirt and mud from getting to the fork seals, and the fast that nothing is getting passed this mudguard, so you can focus on riding without getting blinded by spray.

RRP Proguard Bolt-On

RRP Proguard Bolt-On gives a sleek look without unsightly straps.

3. RRP Proguard Bolt-On

Best for a clean installation.

Weight: 124g | Rating: 9/10

  • No more zip-tie eco-destruction
  • Clean look and less paint damage
  • Not available for all forks
  • Fiddly to fit and remove
  • More expensive

This version of RRP’s Proguard bolts to the brace for a clean look and secure mounting that does away with annoying zip-ties. Not only is this more eco-friendly, it helps prevent scratching and scuffing the paint on your fork lowers.

There are three bolts for attaching the fork to the brace, and the mudguard fits Fox 32, 34, and 36 forks, as well as some Marzocchi, RockShox and Ohlins models. Consult the list on RRP’s website before buying. Fitting is definitely a bit fiddly, but as long as you clean the brace thoroughly you should be fine. It’s not quite as stable as a three-point fixing with straps or zip-ties, and there’s some noise from the rubber leg pads, but many riders will be happy to accept that in return for no more straps.

Mucky Nutz MugGuard

Mucky Nutz MugGuard is a great value option.

4. Mucky Nutz MugGuard

Best value mudguard.

Weight: 106g | Rating: 10/10

Reasons to buy :

Reasons to avoid :

  • Can buzz tyre on bigger hits

Mucky Nutz undercuts RRP by a few quid with its MugGuard, but there’s no real drop in performance. It mounts in a similar way with a three-point fixing, using slots and holes pre-formed in the plastic, and comes with both zip-ties and Velcro straps for installation. We prefer the latter, as it makes it easier to remove, but it’s worth adding some clear protection tape around your lower fork legs to stop the straps scuffing the paint.

There’s a bit more flex to the Mucky Nutz than the RRP, but it’s just as effective at keeping mud and spray out of your vision. Choosing between the two is tough, but if you’re watching the pennies, the circa £5 saving will probably swing it.

Fox 36/38 XL Mud Guard

Fox 36/38 XL Mud Guard

5. Fox 36/38 XL Mud Guard

Best mudguard for fox owners.

Weight: 93g | Rating: 9/10

  • Solid as a rock
  • Wide coverage
  • Harder to mount than rivals
  • Fox forks only

Designed to work exclusively with Fox’s latest 36, 38, and 40 forks, this mudguard mounts to the air bleeders on the back of the lower legs. It’s a faff to fit, as you have to remove the air bleeders and the washers (keep them safe as they’re easy to lose) before installation. But the result is a mudguard that’s extremely stiff and secure, and there’s less chance of damage from straps constantly rubbing the paintwork.

It’ll only fit the latest Fox forks, and it’s not worth getting the short version, but the XL gives ample protection from dirt and spray. A great upgrade for any Fox fork owner.

Crud Products XL Front Fender

6. Crud Products XL Front Fender

Pricey but worth it if you need to remove/attach frequently.

Weight: 145g | Rating: 9/10

  • Easily removable
  • Can rattle and buzz over rough terrain
  • Not the prettiest design

Anyone who has been riding for more than 20 years will remember the Crud Catcher. It was the first purpose-built mudguard for mountain bikes and sold by the truckload. Now Crud is back with a modern take and a new USP. The Crud XL is quick and easy to remove and install thanks to rubber bungee straps similar to the ones used on the original Crud Catcher. So if you have to lay your bike flat in the boot of a car, you can remove the Crud XL easily to prevent it getting bent or damaged.

The Crud XL is cut away in the centre so it slides on easily and you can adjust the height for different wheel sizes. There are also foam pads on the leg supports to protect the legs, but these tend to get wet and muddy and rub the paint anyway. It’s also a bit of a compromise in terms of shape and doesn’t always follow the wheel perfectly. There’s some rattle and it’s noisy on rough descents, and we’re not convinced about the looks. An innovative design that’s good when you need to throw something on quickly.

What to look for when buying a mountain bike mudguard:

Early designs mounted to the down tube, but all the best models now attach to the fork lowers. This keeps them close to the tyre, which stops much more spray and it also tracks the wheel as you steer, so you’re always protected.

The best guards are the longest and work at all speeds. If you’re riding slowly, mud comes off the trailing edge of the tyre and is thrown upwards, but as speed increases it’s thrown further forward and you eventually ride into this spray. Having a mudguard that covers the full arc of mud trajectory is the best option.

Most modern mudguards use zip-ties to stay in place because it’s cheap and easy, but we’re starting to see bolt-on options, and a couple of these new designs are represented here. Hook and loop straps are another solution found on more mudguards now, and these let you take them on and off much more easily, while remaining reusable. Innovation often brings with it increased cost, and while the top end models can be over £40, there are really simple guards available for less than a tenner.

Mounting is (almost) everything

Mounting is (almost) everything

The best mounting options

The common way to fit a mudguard is to use zip-ties passed through the pre-drilled holes in the moulding and pass them around the fork lowers and the fork brace. Some guards use thin Velcro straps, which can be reused and can be removed easily. Several new designs bolt directly to the back of the fork brace, but only if the fork has mounting holes – some don’t.

Plastic rules when is comes to 'guards

Plastic rules when is comes to ‘guards

What material are mudguards made out of?

Most mudguards are made from polypropylene because it’s cheap, light and easy to form. Some manufacturers use a 100% recycled plastic, but it’s often the post-industrial stuff, not plastic bottles that you put in your wheelie bin. In our experience the recycled options don’t last as long, with the mounting slots vulnerable to tearing.

Bigger or don't bother

Bigger or don’t bother

How much coverage do I need?

The longer and wider the better. The downside of a bigger guard is it can flap around, and the more mud it collects, the more it weighs. That can have a noticeable effect on unsprung mass and fork sensitivity. But as long as the dirt is wet, then that shouldn’t be an issue.

Fork protection

Fork protection

How do I protect my fork from scuffing?

The usual method for attachment is to zip-tie the guard to the brace and fork legs, but they are sharp and can scuff the paint, so some guards come with rubber zip-tie covers. Others ditch these entirely in favour of thin Velcro strips or rubber bands. To stop scuffing and movement you can apply a couple of rubber or felt furniture patches (which you buy from a DIY store) to the contact points.

Do I need a specific mudguard depending on my wheel size?

Most of the guards here fit both 29in and 27.5in wheels, but a lot depends on the size of your tyres. If you use tyres wider than 2.5in you may have to angle the guard slightly using a different mounting point.

trek powerfly mudguards

Foldable sheet mudguards are cheap, light, and easy to sling in the back of the car, but not as effective as moulded options.

Foldable or preformed?

There are two basic types of guards – flat sheet foldable options, like the Ride Guard PF1, and Marsh Guard, and moulded polypropylene guards like RRP Pro Guard Bolt-On and Mucky Nutz. The former are affordable, don’t weigh much and fit a ton of forks. The latter have greater coverage and are a bit more robust.

We weighed all the guards, but it’s somewhat irrelevant because sticky mud and clay is quite heavy and the overall weight of your bike can increase by up 12lbs after a muddy ride, so a 50g increase is neither here-nor-there when you’ve got that to deal with. To help prevent this, applying silicone spray to the inside of the plastic mudguard will help mud slide off and reduce accumulation.

Bontrager NCS Alloy Mudguard Set review

Quiet, stable, and full coverage with a built-in blendr mount to keep your light visible no matter how loaded your bike is.

Cyclingnews Verdict

Not everyone thinks of mudguards as the most ground-breaking piece of gear, but you want something that doesn’t move around and provides enough coverage. The Bontrager NCS Alloy Mudguard Set does exactly that, and the Blendr light mount makes it easy to mount a light out of the way.

You can trust Cyclingnews Our experts spend countless hours testing cycling tech and will always share honest, unbiased advice to help you choose. Find out more about how we test.

For many road cyclists the idea of mudguards on a bike is worse than death, however if you spend the winter riding outside in the rain, you'll know that makes little sense. The idea is to ride your bike and if you want to spend all day in heavy rain, you'll happily take any advantage available, and that includes installing a pair of the best road bike mudguards .

After all, having one of the best waterproof cycling jackets on the market is a must, and you'd never consider going without a set of the best cycling overshoes or best winter cycling shoes . There's no reason you should skip out on having a great pair of mudguards either.

Now we've had the chance to put the Bontrager NCS Alloy Mudguard Set through its paces, covering hundreds of miles riding through the rain, and even a little snow, we're ready to share all the details of what they're like to use. If you want to get serious about wet weather riding, then keep reading to see what we think of the Bontrager NCS Alloy Mudguard Set.

Design and aesthetics

There are those who see mudguards as an anti-fast aesthetic - a kind of functional commuter look that takes away from a bike - but the right mudguards definitely shirk that opinion. The Bontrager NCS Alloy Mudguard Set doesn't quite match the bling you might find with a shiny hand-hammered set of steel mudguards, but they hold their own. The matte black finish covers an aluminium construction.

It's not a look that calls attention to itself, but it's hardly lacking in style. The struts and mounting hardware are all silver and do catch the eye a bit, but not too much, given the small overall impact of those pieces. Meanwhile, the black of the mudguard itself blends in with a nice set of wheels. The design minimises distractions if you look at the whole bike. Resist the trend for tan sidewall tyres and you can really set a frame design apart by keeping the eye focused.

The one piece that does standout is the Blendr mount on the back of the rear mudguard. The easiest thing to do with the mount is attach a Bontrager Flare RT light, which slides right on, looks great, and is one of the best bike lights on the market. You aren't strictly limited to that light either, of course.

The Blendr mount is inherently a GoPro mount. If you remove the outer piece, which attaches directly to a Belndr-compatible light, it leaves a mount that works with any GoPro-style bladed mount. There are other rear lights that would work directly using that strategy, or you could get creative with adapters for lights that don't come with GoPro mounts. You could also mount your light on the seatpost and use a lightweight camera like the Insta360 Go 2 on the mudguard.

At the rear of each mudguard is a rubber flap, which is short and mostly rigid. They do technically move if you touch them, but don't expect anything like a traditional rubber or leather 'buddy flap'. The shape and length are just enough to keep water and debris off the face of the rider behind, and the bike, but it's not generous. If you wanted something longer it does technically appear to be possible to remove the included flaps but you'd need to find, or make, something with just the right size and mounting.

Bontrager NCS Alloy Mudguard Set detail of strut adjustment system

The Bontrager NCS Alloy Mudguard Set needs your frame to have mounting points. There are workarounds, such as Framerunners or Axlerunners from Axiom gear, but these are mudguards inherently meant for bikes with mounts. If that will work, keep reading.

The Bontrager mounting requires no cutting. Instead, each strut is made up of two pieces. One side comes from the bike and one side comes from the mudguard. They meet in the middle and the end of each has an Allen bolt that tightens it to the other strut. That makes for two bolts per strut and there's plenty of room to adjust the length. Bontrager isn't unique in this design but it makes life a little easier.

In addition to the struts, there's also a mount at the top of each mudguard. In the front that means the back of the fork. In the rear that means the seat stay bridge. The seatstay bridge mount clips on and there is an additional mounting hole at the back of the bottom bracket. If you don't have a seat stay bridge it's likely that the double rear struts in combination with the lower mount would be enough.

Bontrager NCS Alloy Fender Set front fender

Performance

The mounting process was incredibly fast and easy. Loosen both Allen bolts on each strut and as you adjust, tighten one when you think everything is in the right place. Make sure you tighten the other one before actually riding. I installed the seat stay bracket on its own then squeezed the mudguard into it after it was tight. There's a little bit of a dent to the arc there but the aluminium construction should be able to handle that.

Bontrager included enough bolts that I was not lacking anything. There are extras included too in the form of different lengths. I would have appreciated a few more options with lower profile heads but in the end it's unlikely I would have found an option for the only bolts I needed to swap. On the bike I'm riding, the mudguard mounts are right at the axle and the rear through-axle has a quick-release style handle. To make that work I had to swap the mounting bolts to a flat-topped bolt.

Since mounting the Bontrager NCS Alloy Mudguard Set they've performed perfectly. The only noise they make comes from the mudguard touching the seat stay mounting bracket over large bumps. When it comes to keeping the rider dry, the rounded inside edges and the flaps do a good job channelling water to the ground. At the front, there is enough forward length to keep water from spraying upwards.

Bontrager NCS Alloy Fender Set detail of seatstay bridge mount

Everyone wants to know if the Bontrager NCS Alloy Mudguard Set will keep the rain off them but long rides in heavy rain are wet affairs. What I can say is that my riding partners aren't bothered by spray off the rear wheel and I can clearly see the water channelling into the front mudguard and down to the ground. I don't get sprayed in the face and there's not a constant symphony of rattles and noise. The light mount is also a favourite feature as it means I never have to worry about the bags I decide to bring on a ride.

The details that detract are all solvable. If you want breakaway mounts then nylon bolts would be a good workaround. For longer flaps, you can get creative with the vast wealth of options out there. The question comes down to how much customisation you want to undertake in exchange for easy mounting and a light mount. If you are good with the design out of the box you get a quality product at a reasonable price.

History of Samara Oblast

The territory of the present Samara region became part of the Russian state in the middle of the 16th century, after the Kazan and Astrakhan khanates were conquered by the Russian state. In the 17th-18th centuries, the territory around the middle Volga was colonized by migrants from other regions of Russia and foreigners (in particular, the Volga Germans).

The intensified colonization of the region began only in the second half of the 18th century. From the mid 19th century, this region experienced economic growth. Samara became an important center of the Russian domestic grain market, which led to the development of trade and industry in the city. In 1851, Samara became the center of Samara guberniya (province).

In 1935, Samara was renamed into Kuybyshev (the historical name was returned in 1990). In Soviet times, industrialization had a serious impact on the development of the region. Construction of plants producing explosives, poisonous substances and ammunition began in the town of Chapayevsk.

During the Second World War, the region became one of the centers of the defense industry of the USSR. In 1941, an oil processing plant was put into operation in Syzran providing the army with fuel. Several aviation plants were evacuated to Kuybyshev from Moscow and Voronezh. They started production of “Il-2” attack aircraft.

More Historical Facts…

In 1942, a railway passed through Syzran to supply Soviet troops during the Stalingrad Battle. In 1941-1943, diplomatic missions of foreign countries to the USSR were located in Kuybyshev (Samara). In 1941, there were plans for transferring the capital of the country to Kuybyshev in case the German troops capture Moscow.

In the 1950s-1960s, this region was one of the leading centers of oil extracting in the USSR. In 1945-1951, Kuybyshev and Novokuybyshev oil processing plants were built. At the same time, construction of Zhiguli hydroelectric power station was resumed. It was put into operation in 1955. Because of this construction, the town of Stavropol was flooded and was rebuilt in a new place and received a new name - Tolyatti.

Later, the construction base created during the construction of Zhiguli hydroelectric power station was used to create a series of other large industrial enterprises in Tolyatti - “KuybyshevAzot” mineral fertilizer plant, “Tolyattikauchuk” synthetic rubber plant (1964-1966), the Volga Automobile Plant (1970), and the largest in the country and the world manufacturer of ammonia “TolyattiAzot” (1979).

At the same time, aviation production was expanded. Kuibyshev Aviation Plant began production of the most mass Soviet passenger medium-haul aircraft Tu-154. The Soviet rocket space program orders were also fulfilled at this plant (“Progress” rockets).

In the post Soviet period, due to saved economic potential, Samara oblast has become one of the main economic centers of the country.

Lysanderhöhe (Am Trakt Mennonite Settlement, Samara Oblast, Russia)

Lysanderhöhe was a village of the Am Trakt Mennonite settlement in the province of Samara , Russia , founded in 1864, consisting in 1897 of 22 farms, with a population of 119. A part of the population joined the trek to Turkestan in 1891, while others immigrated to America. In 1914 the population was 146. Franz Bartsch , the author of Unser Auszug nach Mittelasien, was the teacher of the village school. After the Revolution of 1917 the cultural and economic level of the village began to decline. Some of the inhabitants went to Canada and others were exiled. Little is known about the fate of those who remained and the later status of the village.
