Origin: Unknown

Definition: The realisation that each passerby is living a life as complex as your own.

The full definition, taken from The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows reads:

[Sonder is] the realization that each random passerby is living a life as vivid and complex as your own—populated with their own ambitions, friends, routines, worries, and inherited craziness—an epic story that continues invisibly around you like an anthill sprawling deep underground, with elaborate passageways to thousands of other lives that you’ll never know existed, in which you might appear only once, as an extra sipping coffee in the background, as a blur of traffic passing on the highway, as a lighted window at dusk.

I often feel this way when I pass groups of strangers, speaking a language that is completely foreign to me, and realise just how incredibly big the world is. We all have a life that is full of different connections, memories and possibilities. That’s sonder.

Amazing list! One word I’d add is the Dutch word “gezellig” or “gezelligheid” – similarly to hygge, it describes a feeling of warmth/comfort/coziness/quaintness in certain settings or around certain people.

Thank you so much for sharing this Heba. So interesting to learn that Dutch has a similar word :)

So many of these describe me or my feelings about seeing the world. But, if I had to pick one, the one that best describes how I choose my destinations would be “selcouth”. I so want to be a stranger in a strange land. To have my belief that there is no such thing as “normal” affirmed again and again and over again.

What a beautiful word. Thanks for sharing, Janet :)

Travel Words

Words related to travel.

Below is a massive list of travel words - that is, words related to travel. The top 4 are: journey , trip , adventure and tourism . You can get the definition(s) of a word in the list below by tapping the question-mark icon next to it. The words at the top of the list are the ones most associated with travel, and as you go down the relatedness becomes more slight. By default, the words are sorted by relevance/relatedness, but you can also get the most common travel terms by using the menu below, and there's also the option to sort the words alphabetically so you can get travel words starting with a particular letter. You can also filter the word list so it only shows words that are also related to another word of your choosing. So for example, you could enter "journey" and click "filter", and it'd give you words that are related to travel and journey.

You can highlight the terms by the frequency with which they occur in the written English language using the menu below. The frequency data is extracted from the English Wikipedia corpus, and updated regularly. If you just care about the words' direct semantic similarity to travel, then there's probably no need for this.

There are already a bunch of websites on the net that help you find synonyms for various words, but only a handful that help you find related , or even loosely associated words. So although you might see some synonyms of travel in the list below, many of the words below will have other relationships with travel - you could see a word with the exact opposite meaning in the word list, for example. So it's the sort of list that would be useful for helping you build a travel vocabulary list, or just a general travel word list for whatever purpose, but it's not necessarily going to be useful if you're looking for words that mean the same thing as travel (though it still might be handy for that).

If you're looking for names related to travel (e.g. business names, or pet names), this page might help you come up with ideas. The results below obviously aren't all going to be applicable for the actual name of your pet/blog/startup/etc., but hopefully they get your mind working and help you see the links between various concepts. If your pet/blog/etc. has something to do with travel, then it's obviously a good idea to use concepts or words to do with travel.

If you don't find what you're looking for in the list below, or if there's some sort of bug and it's not displaying travel related words, please send me feedback using this page. Thanks for using the site - I hope it is useful to you! 🐦

John Bolton Says Trump Made 'Forbidden' Move After Controversial Arlington Visit

Ben Blanchet

Former Trump White House national security adviser John Bolton flagged what GOP nominee Donald Trump did “wrong” following his controversial visit to Arlington National Cemetery this week.

Bolton appeared on CNN where host Phil Mattingly described Trump as “close” to the families of service members killed in Kabul during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The former White House official commented that he was surprised the U.S. Army put out a statement after Trump’s Arlington visit that said a campaign staffer “ abruptly pushed aside ” a cemetery employee, noting it was an “unusual” move for the Army to say something.

“And to be clear, what Trump may have done at Arlington with the families, whatever he said to them, pictures that were taken. That’s not anything that’s wrong,” Bolton said.

“What was wrong was what he did after they left the cemetery,” he continued. “By taking the films and so on and turning them into a political advertisement, that is what’s forbidden and that’s what he did. And I think that’s why people are legitimately upset.”

Arlington, a national cemetery with over 400,000 people buried on its 639 acres, prohibits political campaign or election-related activity at the site — rules that officials said they warned the Trump campaign about .

The former president, in remarks on the Arlington episode Thursday, claimed he didn’t “need the publicity” and blamed “bad people” in Washington for the matter.

Mattingly later mentioned that Trump campaign adviser Chris LaCivita shared footage of Trump at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier earlier this week. Mattingly said he was allowed to take the video but noted that LaCivita said when he shared it that he hoped it triggered “the hacks” with the secretary of the Army.

“I have tremendous respect for his service, but they’re aggressively attacking on this issue. And I guess I don’t really understand why,” said Mattingly, who noted that LaCivita is a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and a Purple Heart recipient.

Bolton, who said he wished the Army chief of staff had been the one to issue a statement on the visit, said the campaign thinks the situation will help it but that the Trump campaign proves a point in “using the whole thing for political purposes.”

“That’s expressly what Congress was trying to prevent. And, and in the regulations that make it clear that that’s not what Arlington National Cemetery is for,” Bolton said.

“I can’t predict what the political outcome will be but it’s — I just think it’s shameful behavior.”

  • J.D. Vance Blames Staff for Disastrous Doughnut-Shop Visit

Portrait of Margaret Hartmann

Last week, J.D. Vance took a break from saying weird things about childless people to visit a doughnut shop in Valdosta, Georgia. Presumably, the Trump campaign wanted to show off how well the VP nominee connects with regular people. Instead, it got a viral video that has been compared unfavorably to an infamously cringeworthy episode of The Office .

So what happened? Vance addressed the incredibly awkward doughnut-shop visit in an interview with NBC News published Wednesday, explaining that his staffers are to blame:

“I just felt terrible for that woman,” Vance said Tuesday on the plane, referring to the bakery worker. “We walked in, and there’s 20 Secret Service agents, and there’s 15 cameras, and she clearly had not been properly warned, and she was terrified, right? I just felt awful for her.” Vance said that [he] enjoys engaging in that kind of retail politicking and added that he has made it clear to his staff that such visits must be planned more carefully in the future.  “We don’t to have these scripted events — I don’t want to go and do three takes of buying Doritos at a Sheetz,” Vance said, referring to a  recent Harris stop  at a Pennsylvania gas station. “I like to get out there and talk to people, and we want to make sure we’re doing it, but definitely make sure that people are at least OK with being on camera, or we’re going to walk in and you’re going to have a person who has, practically, a panic attack because she’s got 15 cameras in her face.”

On the one hand, sure, Vance’s team is partly at fault. They brought him to an empty shop where he could not mingle with fellow patrons, apparently didn’t tell the staff they were coming, and didn’t coach their candidate on what to order.

On the other hand, it’s not staffers’ fault that every line that came out of Vance’s mouth was bizarre and uncomfortable. He started off with a confusing quip, saying “the zoo has come to town” (he probably meant “circus”). Then he made small talk with the employees by asking how long they’ve worked at the shop and replying, “Okay, good,” with no follow-up. And Vance behaved like he’d never ordered a doughnut in his life, requesting “some sprinkle stuff, some of these cinnamon rolls. Just whatever makes sense.”

Vance did manage to express empathy for another human with his comments to NBC about the bakery worker. Now someone just needs to explain to him that people typically don’t like it when leaders blame their mistakes on underlings. And it’s a particularly dumb move when those staffers are all that stand between you and another embarrassing viral video.

Prioritizing Care for Resource-Limited Travelers

Cdc yellow book 2024.

Author(s): Zoon Wangu, Elizabeth Barnett

Malaria Prophylaxis

Travelers’ diarrhea, preventive behaviors.

Travelers seen in pretravel clinic consultations often have financial constraints and must pay out of pocket for pretravel care, because many health insurance plans provide no or limited coverage for travel immunizations and prophylactic medications. Optimizing care for travelers without adequate insurance coverage or with only modest means can challenge the abilities of even the savviest travel medicine clinician. As an example, the estimated cost of a pretravel consultation for a backpacker from the United States planning a 4-week trip to West Africa could easily exceed $1,000 for the initial consultation and vaccinations, excluding malaria prophylaxis.

Travelers on a limited budget might be at increased risk for travel-associated infections because they are more likely to visit remote areas, stay in more modest accommodations, and eat in restaurants with lower hygiene standards. However, the total cost of hospitalization, treatment, and lost wages after becoming ill with a vaccine- or prophylaxis-preventable disease can easily exceed the upfront cost of vaccination and prophylaxis, making the pretravel consultation particularly important. Travelers also must consider the cost and benefit of purchasing travel health insurance and medical evacuation insurance before travel (see Sec. 6, Ch. 1, Travel Insurance, Travel Health Insurance & Medical Evacuation Insurance ). Use the pretravel consult as an opportunity to help guide travel health recommendations for travelers with financial constraints.

Required Travel Vaccines

Only meningococcal and yellow fever vaccines are required categorically, and then only for some travelers: meningococcal vaccine for pilgrims traveling to Mecca during the Hajj, and yellow fever vaccine for travelers to certain countries in Africa and South America (see Sec. 2, Ch. 5, Yellow Fever Vaccine & Malaria Prevention Information, by Country ). Prioritize administration and documentation of these vaccines; travelers without them could be denied entry to their destination. Be aware that even travelers staying only briefly in a yellow fever-endemic country (e.g., during an airport layover) might still need evidence of vaccination to be permitted entry to other countries on their itinerary.

In a few specific circumstances, travelers to polio-affected countries might be asked to show proof of polio vaccination before departure if their stay is >4 weeks (see Sec. 5, Part 2, Ch. 17, Poliomyelitis ). Travelers and clinicians should check the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Travelers’ Health website for the latest recommendations for their destinations .

Routine Vaccines

All travelers should be current with routine vaccines before international travel, regardless of destination. The benefits of routine vaccines extend beyond the travel period, and many provide lifelong immunity. Because these vaccines are mass-produced as part of scheduled national childhood and adult vaccination programs, associated costs generally are low, and many insurance companies reimburse the patient for the cost of administration. Travelers also can obtain these vaccines in a health department or primary care setting, where costs might be lower than at a travel clinic.

For travelers not up to date with routine vaccines, prioritize administration of those that protect against diseases for which the traveler is most likely to be at general risk (e.g., hepatitis A, influenza, and measles). Children in the United States routinely receive hepatitis A vaccine, but it is not included in the adult immunization schedule. Some travelers might be immune to diseases for which travel medicine providers would consider immunization; pretravel antibody testing might be covered by insurance when vaccines are not. Assess the time to departure to decide whether to test rather than vaccinate.

Recommended Travel Vaccines

When prioritizing recommended vaccines, consider time until departure (see Last-Minute Travelers , Sec. 2, Ch. 11), risk for disease at the destination, effectiveness and safety of the vaccine, and likelihood of future benefit because of repeat travel. As previously noted, hepatitis A vaccine is not currently listed as a routine vaccine for US adults; however, this vaccine can provide lifelong immunity and clinicians should consider administering it to any traveler not previously vaccinated. Hepatitis B vaccine is recommended for all US adults under age 60; since hepatitis B acquisition is not frequently associated with travel, however, vaccination against hepatitis B might be a lower priority for travelers with limited resources, unless their destinations are areas of high disease incidence or they plan to engage in activities that place them at increased risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens (see Sec. 5, Part 2, Ch. 8, Hepatitis B ). Typhoid vaccine is ≈50%–80% effective in preventing disease, and protection is not long-lasting. Thus, typhoid vaccine is more critical for travelers to higher-risk destinations where acquiring typhoid is more likely, and to areas where typhoid is harder to treat because of multidrug resistance (e.g., Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent).

Coronavirus Disease 2019

Clinicians should discuss and recommend vaccination against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), regardless of destination (see Sec. 5, Part 2, Ch. 3, COVID-19 ).

Japanese Encephalitis

Review the traveler’s itinerary in detail to determine the need for Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine (see Sec. 5, Part 2, Ch. 13, Japanese Encephalitis ). Some travelers might be able to obtain the single-dose JE vaccine, which is much less expensive and is available outside the United States, but bear in mind (and educate travelers about) issues surrounding quality of vaccines in many countries (see Sec. 6, Ch. 3, . . . perspectives: Avoiding Poorly Regulated Medicines & Medical Products During Travel ). Whether or not travelers accept the JE vaccine, provide instructions for when and how to use insect repellents and other measures to prevent mosquito bites (see Sec. 4, Ch. 6, Mosquitoes, Ticks & Other Arthropods ).

When considering rabies vaccine for resource-limited travelers, factor in the risk for animal exposure, access to local health care, and availability of rabies immune globulin and rabies vaccine at the traveler’s destination (see Sec. 5, Part 2, Ch. 18, Rabies ). Advise travelers who decline preexposure immunization to devise a plan of action in case an exposure occurs. In many areas, rabies vaccine or rabies immune globulin are difficult or impossible to obtain, and travelers might need to be medically evacuated to receive full and proper postexposure prophylaxis.

Every pretravel consultation should include detailed advice about preventing mosquito bites (see Sec. 4, Ch. 6, Mosquitoes, Ticks & Other Arthropods ). Malaria risk varies widely depending on destination, accommodations, and activities during travel. Costs associated with the different regimens vary widely. Providers should stay up to date on the cost of antimalarial medications in their region and at pharmacies, so they can recommend the most cost-effective drug based on the traveler’s planned itinerary. If travelers ask whether they can purchase antimalarial drugs at their destination, advise them about the risk of inappropriate, substandard, and counterfeit medications and discourage them from this practice (see Sec. 6, Ch. 3, . . . perspectives: Avoiding Poorly Regulated Medicines & Medical Products During Travel ).

Travelers’ diarrhea (TD) is among the most common travel-related illnesses. Consider prescribing antibiotics to travelers to treat incapacitating diarrhea. Prophylaxis is indicated only in select patients at high risk for complications from TD (Sec. 2, Ch. 6, Travelers’ Diarrhea ). As with antimalarial drugs purchased at the destination, advise travelers about the risk of purchasing counterfeit antibiotics overseas.

For each traveler, weigh the potential severity of illness against the affordability and availability of immunization or prophylaxis, as well as the level of protection provided. In cases where a disease is potentially deadly but where affordable, effective chemoprophylaxis options exist (e.g., malaria), work with the traveler to identify an acceptable prescribed chemoprophylaxis regimen and emphasize the importance of not eschewing medication due to cost.

In addition, educate all travelers about the importance of employing preventive behaviors that can serve to reduce their exposure risks: avoiding animals, using insect bite precautions, following safe sex practices, washing their hands or using alcohol-based hand sanitizer frequently, and observing food and water precautions to the best of their ability. Strongly advise all travelers, and especially those unable to afford some of the more costly immunizations or prophylactic medications, to practice these behaviors. In the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, offer advice about mask use, encourage travelers to take note of the level of SARS-CoV-2 infection at their destination, and to be mindful about avoiding large gatherings. Reassure travelers that the actions they take to avoid preventable health risks also can protect against travel-associated conditions that are more prevalent than certain vaccine-preventable diseases.

Three injury updates: tottenham hotspur predicted lineup vs newcastle united.

  • August 31, 2024

Declan Wiseman, Editor

Micky van de Ven and Son Heung Min embrace in celebration

Tottenham Hotspur will feel confident despite a difficult trip to St James’ Park where they will kick off against Newcastle United at 1:30 PM. Here is our Tottenham Hotspur predicted lineup, with Spurs eager to avoid the thrashings they have received on their last two visits to Newcastle.

Tottenham Hotspur Predicted Lineup as Spurs Travel to St James’ Park

How tottenham have lined up recently.

Most recently sticking to a 4-3-3, the Lilywhites continue to reap the rewards from a more expansive style of play under ‘Angeball’.

Between the sticks, Guglielmo Vicario has kept Spurs in safe hands as Tottenham’s number one in his 42 appearances for the club so far.

In front of him remains a familiar defence from last season; Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie play as full-backs on either side of the formidable pairing of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero. The back four have scored or set up three goals in their first two games, including an emphatic pitch-long run and assist from van de Ven.

In midfield, Postecoglou has tinkered in his first two games with a variety of personnel, both in his starting eleven and off the bench. James Maddison has featured in both games with his playmaking paying dividends in the form of two assists in the opening matches.

Rodrigo Bentancur was replaced by Yves Bissouma in the last game out due to injury – who scored his first-ever Spurs goal in some fashion against Everton.

Meanwhile, Pape Matar Sarr and Dejan Kulusevski have each made one start and one substitute appearance in midfield.

On the wings, Wilson Odobert made his first start last time out, partly owing to Solanke and Richarlison’s injuries, with Brennan Johnson starting both games on the opposite flank.

Son Heung-Min is Spurs’ sharpshooter, scoring two in his last two matches.

Tottenham’s Recent Form and Tactics

Unbeaten so far, Tottenham initially had a frustrating start to the season. Despite a dominant first half, Jamie Vardy crashed in an equaliser at the King Power Stadium which would have felt all too familiar for Spurs fans. But their thumping 4-0 home opener versus Everton demonstrated what Spurs can do when they finish their chances.

Home or away, Tottenham have not been shy to attack straight from kick-off, dominate possession and try to take control of the game this season. It would be refreshing to see them continue to do this, especially considering their last two capitulations at St James’ Park.

Tottenham Injuries and Suspensions to Consider

Spurs have already been struck by injuries so early into the campaign. Their strike force has been particularly affected with Dominic Solanke and Richarlison ruled out.

Ange Postecoglou said : “Main ones [injuries] are Dom Solanke is close but I think we’ll err on the side of caution with the international break. Richy pulled up sore. I think there’s a muscle injury there and we’re getting some more information, but he is out.”

The Spurs boss was quick to back Richarlison despite his injury struggles. Postecoglou said: “He’s such a handful. Even last week that 20 minutes he played, you can see the options he gives us in that position.”

But there is some good news as Postecoglou gave an update on Rodrigo Bentancur, who has “trained and most importantly he feels good”.
