Zurich Day Trip: Uetliberg Mountain Hike

The go-to hike in Zurich is Uetliberg, a mountain in the Swiss Alps that rises 870m, and is located just 5 miles from Zurich city center. From the top, you can expect a great view of Zurich, the lake, and the surrounding area. What makes this hike even more special is the Planetenweg, or “Planet Trail,” which extends from Uetliberg to Felsenegg. Each meter of the hike represents 1 million kilometers as you travel from the sun past each planet to Pluto. The total hike is about 3.75 miles.

Getting There + Back

There are a few ways to get to Uetliberg, but this is the route we’ve planned. We’re hoping for an easy 2-hour hike along the Planetenweg, with a cable car trip to finish off.

To Uetliberg : Take the S10 train from Zurich HB towards Uetliberg . This train should take about 27 minutes .

Back to Zurich HB : You’ll follow the hike to Felsenegg , where you will take the cable car to Adliswil . The cable car arrives every 15 minutes, and is a 5 minute ride. It goes pretty much all day, but it’s always a good idea to check the timetable . After departing the cable car, take a 5-10 minute walk to the Adliswil Bahnhof (train station), where you will catch the 23-minute S4 train back to Zurich HB .

What to See

When you arrive at Uetliberg, follow signs from the station for Planetenweg . This is the start of the planet walk, which starts with the sun. Follow the trail upwards, and after about 10 minutes, there will be a detour to Uetliberg Uto-Kulm . Take this short detour to go to a great viewpoint. When finished, take your same path back to the main trail to make sure you don’t miss any of the planets on the walk.

Follow the trail for an expected 2-hour hike towards Felsenegg . At the endpoint there are more restaurant options and additional views of Lake Zurich and the alps.

Since this is a free-to-access hike, the only cost for this day trip is transportation! Here is the transportation breakdown per the route above:

  • S10 Train to train Uetliberg: CHF 8.80 / person
  • Cable car to Adliswil: CHF 4.40 / person
  • S4 Train back to Zurich HB: CHF 6.80 / person
  • TOTAL: CHF 20 / person

That’s a bit pricy for a destination located only 5 miles from the city center… luckily, there are some alternative ticket options that can save you some money:

  • Albis Day Pass : This pass is perfect for a hike to Uetliberg! It’s a 24-hour pass that allows you to take all of the trains/cablecars on the route I mentioned, and costs CHF 17.60 . If you plan on any late night travel (past 1am), make sure to purchase a Night Supplement for an additional CHF 5.00 .
  • Zürich Card : This pass allows for travel throughout the larger Zurich area, including all the connections for your Uetliberg hike! In addition, it includes admission to many local museums, and discounts at some restaurants. The card is available for adults for CHF 27 / 24 hours or CHF 53 / 72 hours.
  • Swiss Half Fare Card : If you purchase this discount card, you can purchase almost all tickets for nearly half off. This is so common in Switzerland, that the SBB website assumes that you have it! Using this card will cut the train rides in half, and give a good discount to the cablecar as well, bringing your total to CHF 10.90, saving you CHF 9.10. The discount card itself costs CHF 120.00 , and lasts for a whole month. It may only be worth it for you if you’re planning on traveling throughout Switzerland.
  • Swiss Family Fun for some good insight on doing this hike with kids
  • SBB Website for planning your train times

Uetliberg • Three trails to the top of this Zurich mountain

  • Zürich Region

It took me over a dozen years of living in Zürich before I ever hiked up Uetliberg, the mountain overlooking Zürich. It seemed pointless if I could take a train up there and skip the climb. But after my first time up the mountain, I was hooked and now I hike up there often because it’s an excellent free workout and close to home. I have three trail options below, which are a good starting place.

I offer this information because there are lots of tiny paths leading to Uetliberg, but most are not well maintained and can be dangerous, especially after wet weather. I’ve done a couple of these by mistake (see example below) and they are not worth the effort. The wider trails I show below are much safer options.

uetliberg swiss travel pass

On multiple occasions, I’ve seen people scrambling up these non-official trails, emerging through the bushes at the top rather flustered, having to climb over a barrier to reach the viewpoint. Totally unnecessary and risky.

All of my recommended trails are well maintained trails but do include very steep climbs/descents, which can be hard on the knees and sometimes slippery with loose gravel. So wear good shoes and use good judgement. That said, you’ll see all sorts of casual walkers with inappropriate footwear and normal clothing strolling slowly up the mountain.

Uetliberg Kulm • Your goal

All of these trails lead to the Uetliberg Kulm, a viewpoint looking over Zürich. You can easily reach this by train and an easy 600m walk ( info about that here ). But it’s much more satisfying when you hike up.

uetliberg swiss travel pass

There is a restaurant and hotel at the top. There are toilets, but require a CHF 1 coin to enter. There is a tower you can climb. It is currently CHF 5/person to go up, which I think is much too expensive! If you want just north of the viewpoint staying on the ridge, you’ll come to a picnic area with a playground and water fountain.

uetliberg swiss travel pass

Option 1: Up & Back – Föhreneggweg to Uetlibergweg

This trail simply goes up and down Uetliberg on parallel trails, the shortest option here. If you live in Zürich, you could probably fit this in while the kids are at school in the morning and still make it back home in time to cook lunch. I’ve shown the trail starting from the Albisgüetli stop (end of the line for Tram 13) at the base of Uetliberg, right near the trailhead that starts in the forest.

There are two parallel trails going up the mountain. I usually go up the trail on the right on the map below and down the other one. The section on the right is labeled “exponiert”, which means it’s exposed with sections not in the forest, so you get views to the lake. The trail on the left is all in the forest with no views. Both trails are very steep, but well maintained.

Here’s one of the viewpoints on the way up Uetliberg.

uetliberg swiss travel pass

Some of the stairs on the trail up.

uetliberg swiss travel pass

Option 2: Loop – Gratweg to Hohensteinweg

This trail is a loop, hiking up Uetliberg, then north along the ridge (aka Gratwegli) then down the Hohensteinweg, then back along the Panorama trail on the edge of the forest. This is a good option if you want to hike longer but want to loop back your starting point or if you don’t want to leave the city.

The trail down feels less challenging that the way up because there are more switchbacks and more stairs, which make the climb/descent slightly easier.

uetliberg swiss travel pass

Option 3: Waldegg to Hohensteinstrasse

This is the easiest option and you can make it even easier by taking the train one direction, so just hiking up or just hiking down.

There is a large parking lot at Birmensdorferstrasse 12, 8142 Uitikon Waldegg where I’ve started the trail shown below. The bus stop Waldegg, Birmensdorferstrasse is also near here, serviced by many bus lines.

If you want to take the train there or back, use the Uitikon Waldegg station, which is a short walk from the parking. There are a few parking spots next to this train station if you prefer.

At about the halfway point there is a very nice playground and picnic area at Hohensteinplatz .

Extra credit: Hike up Uetliberg, then Panorama trail to Felsenegg

2020.03.30 – Since this relies on public transportation to return to your starting point, best to save this option for after the Covid19 lockdown.

This trail climbs up to Uetliberg, then heads south on the Panorama/Planeta trail to Felsenegg , where you can ride the cable car down to Adliswil, which saves you about 1.5km distance and 400m of elevation descent. In spring 2020, that cable car is currently being replaced and won’t be done at the earliest until 30.April 2020. So at the moment, you’ll need to hike down.

You’ll need at least 4 hours for this one because the hike ends at the Adliswil train station and you’ll need to take the train back to Zürich. I marked the trail starting at the Saalsporthalle train station at Sihlcity (Train S4, Tram 5 & 13), which is convenient because train back from Adliswil stops here. But you could shorten this trail by taking tram 13 to the Albisgütli stop and start there.

If you do ride the Felsenegg cable car, note that the ticket is part of the Adliswil ZVV zone, so the same as buying a ticket from Adliswil train station . So just buy a ticket from here to your final destination. If you are going to Zürich, it costs about CHF 3.20.

Here are a couple views along the Panorama trail. It’s an easy path, with gradual ups and downs. More details for the Panorama/Planet trail here .

thank you this looks amazing! I am visiting Zurich and want to do option 2 – I don’t mind a hard climb, but are there any points where you walk on the edge of a cliff, where you need to be careful not to fall? or when you climb the steep mountain you are still safe from falling?

I don’t recall any parts near a cliff edge. Parts of the trail are steep though and you need to walk slowly so you don’t slip.

I was thinking, are these trails “hike-able” during winter months? Any experience? I mean safety-wise could they be dangerous because of ice/mud? Also, beauty-wise, which time of the year you would say is the best time to go for it?

Thanks in advance!

It depends on the snow situation. I wouldn’t suggest it if there is snow, ice or mud. It wouldn’t be too dangerous as there are no cliffs to fall off. But you could get hurt slipping on the ice or mud. Much better to ride the train to Uetliberg and walk along the ridge instead. But during winter, there isn’t often snow up there. So just check the conditions before heading out.

My wife and I almost skipped the mountain because we found out the train is not running on weekdays and this is the last day I was free from work. After we found your blog we decided to hike up on route 1 and it was great. Thanks so much for writing this!

I’m glad you were able to visit Uetliberg with the hike. But I’m positive that this train runs on weekdays. I’ve ridden it lots of times on weekdays.

So glad to learn about these short routes at Zurich. I would be going there in coming February. I am from Hong Kong and loves hiking in my place. Hope to do some gentle hiking when I go to Switzerland then. Thanks, Tanya.

Hi there, thanks for this post. I was searching for an easy way to go there with my family and your second option, Uetliberg – Waldegg to Hohensteinstrasse, looks like the best one for me. Cheers Alessandro

The easiest way is to simply ride the train 🙂 Hope you had fun!

The Uetliberg with its summit at the Uto Kulmo 871 metres above sea level towers above the roofs of Zurich. From the top you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the city of Zurich, Lake Zurich and the Limmat Valley up as far as the Alps.

The Uetliberg is particularly popular in November, as its summit is often above the blanket of fog that can cover the city at this time of year. In the winter, the hiking trails to the summit are converted into sledding runs. In summer, there’s plenty to discover on well-marked hiking routes, a mountain bike route, and on the Planet Trail. This hour-and-a-half to two-hour walk from Uetliberg to the Felsenegg cableway in Adliswil takes you on a fascinating tour through a model of our solar system. Directions: The S10 line of the Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Railway SZU runs from Zurich main station to Uetliberg station, ten minutes walk from the summit.

Uetliberg Lookout Tower: Panoramic Views of Zurich & The Alps

Uetliberg

A day trip to the top of the Uetliberg Lookout Tower is hard to beat.

You start with a fun ride on the Uetliberg train from Zurich HB and end up high above the top of the Uetliberg with a 360-degree view you won’t believe.

The Uetliberg tower is 72 meters high and can be easily climbed via a number of stairs from the top of the Uetliberg mountain.

Wondering how to get there, what it costs, and whether it’s really worth it.

Keep reading to find out about my recent visit!

Table of Contents

General Information

Getting there.

Uetliberg Lookout Tower next to the Uto Kulm Restaurant

The Uetliberg Lookout Tower is located at the top of the Uetliberg 45 minutes from Zurich downtown.

The easiest way to get there is to take the Uetliberg train from Zurich HB. It takes around 25 minutes to get to the final station: Uetliberg.

** At the time of writing in Summer 2023, the train line is undergoing maintenance and various portions will be closed throughout the summer. Check the SBB schedule to see how to get around these closures (we took the tram to Triemli and then caught the train from there).

Once you reach the final station, the Lookout Tower is another 10-15 minute walk uphill from the train. There is a wide gravel path to the top which you can push a pram up, although looking at the guys sweating their way up, I would not recommend it for most people. It is steep.

The walk to the top of the tower is 72 meters in total and quite a few sets of stairs. It only take about 5-10 minutes to walk up, depending on how fit you are. If you notice yourself getting out of breath, take a pause and wait a minute to catch your breath. It is quite the climb up!

Payment Options

Ticket Machine at the Uetliberg Tower

Want To Save This For Later?

We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later!

I just wanted to mention payment options and using the machine to enter the tower because it was a little confusing when I was there. When you first starting climbing you come to a landing with a gate and a machine on the right.

It costs CHF 5 per person and you can pay with a credit card or 1 & 2 CHF coins. The machine is not manned and there are no real instructions on it. So, here is what you need to do.

To pay and enter, do the following on the payment machine:

  • Press the button labeled “Tower Access”
  • Pay with a card or coins
  • A green light appears above the gate when your payment is ok
  • You can now enter the turnstile

Repeat this process for each person.

Is it worth climbing the Uetliberg Lookout Tower?

Yes, it is definitely worth climbing to the top of the Uetliberg Lookout Tower if you go to the top of the Uetliberg. You get a far better, wider and clearer 360 degree view of the surroundings from there which includes distance views of the Alps, Lake Zurich, Zurich city and in all other directions. You won’t get such a view of the Zurich area anywhere else.

All the transportation companies are united in the Zurich Transport Association (ZVV), which is why one ticket can be used on all forms of transportation on the city network. This also includes boats, funicular railways, and cable cars.
