What Is The K-ETA? How To Apply For The Korea-ETA 2024

Since September 1st, 2021, Korea has required travellers aged 18 to 65 from 112 countries to apply for the Korea-ETA (K-ETA). The K-ETA is an electronic travel authorisation program that will save travellers time when they arrive in South Korea by reducing paperwork at the airport.

But what is the K-ETA? And who needs it? If you’re not sure, you’re not alone. There are a lot of questions about whether or not you need to get a K-ETA, how long it lasts for, whether it works instead of a visa (it doesn’t), and if there are any exemptions (there are).

If you require the K-ETA, but don’t apply for one, you won’t be allowed to travel to South Korea. This guide will help you avoid this problem, explain who needs the K-ETA, show you how to apply for the K-ETA, and answer a range of other questions regarding this travel document. 1: What Is The K-ETA?

The K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorisation) is an online electronic travel authorisation that visa-free foreign visitors need to obtain before entering the Republic of Korea for tourism, visiting relatives, participating in events or meetings, and for business purposes other than profitable activities.

Visas & K-ETA: Some travellers to Korea need a Tourist Visa , but most can travel with a Korean Electronic Travel Authorisation (K-ETA). Currently 22 Countries don’t need either one.

Seoul City Passes : Visit Seoul’s top attractions for free with a Discover Seoul Pass or Go City Seoul Pass . These passes are great for families and couples visiting Seoul – you can save lots.

How To Get Around : For public transport, grab a T-Money Card . Save money on Korea’s high speed trains with a Korea Rail Pass . To see more of Korea, there are many Rental Car Options .

Travel Money : Use money exchanges near Myeongdong and Hongdae subway stations for the best exchange rates. Order a Wise Card or WOWPASS to pay by card across Korea.

Flights To Korea : I use flight comparison sites such as Expedia and Skyscanner to find the best flights to Korea from any country. Air Asia is a good option for budget flights from Asia.

2: Who Needs To Apply For The K-ETA?

The K-ETA is required for nationals of:

A: Korean visa waiver countries (66 countries)

B: Designated visa-free countries (46 countries)

The K-ETA is required for foreign nationals who intend to enter Korea for tourism, visiting relatives, participate in events or meetings, and business purposes other than profitable activities.

From April 1st, 2023 until December 31st, 2024, the Korean government has decided to suspend the K-ETA requirement for travellers from the following 22 countries:

Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Macao, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Taiwan, UK, US (including Guam).

The aim is to reduce the burden of travellers coming to Korea and to encourage more people to visit Korea during the ‘Visit Korea Year’, which runs during 2023 and 2024.

From July 3rd, 2023, the Korean government will no longer ask for travellers who are 17 years and younger, or 65 years and older, to apply for a K-ETA when visiting Korea. These are ages based on the time you travel to Korea, not the age when you apply to travel.

Furthermore, the validity period of the K-ETA is now 3 years, not 2 years. The Korean government has decided to extend the validity period to make it easier for people to travel to Korea.

Please note: Eligibility for K-ETA is based on your nationality, not your country of residence or where you’re travelling from. If you live in one of the 22 above-mentioned K-ETA excluded countries, but aren’t a citizen of one of those countries, you’ll still need to apply for a K-ETA.

Do I Need A K-ETA?

If you need a tourist visa to travel to South Korea, then you won’t need to obtain a K-ETA. You’ll need to apply for a tourist visa from your local Korean embassy. The infographic above will help you see if you need a K-ETA or not and what you should do next.

A: Korean Visa Waiver Countries

Nationals aged between 18 and 65 from countries that concluded a visa waiver agreement with the Republic of Korea will need to obtain the K-ETA. This applies to the following countries:

Is it mandatory to get a K-ETA when visiting Korea?

Yes . If a person, who is a national of a K-ETA required country, does not have a K-ETA, he or she will not be allowed to board the flight or ship bound for the Republic of Korea. Children 17 years and younger, or adults 65 years and older don’t need to apply for a K-ETA.

How long can I stay in Korea if I have a K-ETA?

Generally up to 90 days, but the allowed period of stay may differ by nationality. The minimum amount of time is 30 days and the maximum is 3 months. Check the K-ETA Website to confirm your period of stay.

3: How To Apply For The K-ETA

This section will describe how to apply for the Korea-ETA, how much to pay, and what you will need to prepare for your K-ETA application. Make sure you have all these documents ready before you start your application to ensure a smooth process.

What Is Required For The K-ETA application?

The Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA) application process is straightforward and requires only a few essential documents and details, including a passport, valid credit or debit card, an email address, and a passport-size colour photo.

Applicants must have a valid passport so your identity and nationality can be verified, ensuring you’re eligible for a K-ETA. In addition, a valid debit or credit card is required to pay the ₩10,000 K-ETA fee. This cost covers the administrative costs of processing the K-ETA applications.

K-ETA applicants also need to provide a current email address . This is crucial as the approved ETA for South Korea will be sent to this email. It’s recommended to use an email that you frequently check to avoid missing any important updates or notifications.

Lastly, a passport-size colour photo is required. This photo is used for identification purposes and should meet the standard passport photo requirements. Check the next section for more details about the requirements of the passport-size photo. This is a crucial requirement and needs to be correct.

Photo Requirements For The K-ETA

When applying for the Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA), meeting the specific passport picture requirements is crucial for a smooth application process. Failing to meet the photo requirements is one of the most common reasons why people have their K-ETA applications rejected.

The photo for the K-ETA application must be in colour and be standard passport-size, typically measuring 35mm in width and 45mm in height. The image should have a clear and well-lit background, preferably in white or a light colour, ensuring the applicant’s face is distinctly visible.

The individual’s facial features should be centred and occupy about 70-80% of the photo, presenting a neutral expression with both eyes open and looking directly into the camera. It’s essential you avoid pictures with any shadows, reflections, or red-eye effects.

Photos should be taken within the last 6 months, which is typical for most visa and travel applications around the world in my experience. You can take photo with your phone if applying through the K-ETA app, which guarantees the photo is under 6 months old.

When do I need to apply for the K-ETA?

You should apply for the K-ETA at least 24 hours prior to boarding the flight or ship bound for the Republic of Korea. Once you’ve booked your hotel and know your travel dates, you can start your K-ETA application. Complete your application as soon as possible so it’s done and you can forget about it.

How long does it take to apply for a K-ETA?

It will take approximately 10 minutes to apply for a K-ETA, as long as you have all the necessary documents in place.

How long does it take from submitting the K-ETA application to receiving the results?

You should receive the results by e-mail, within 24 hours after completing the K-ETA application. However, in practice, the actual processing time can range from a few hours to a few days. If it takes more than a day, there might be some issues with your application, or it might be a busy period.

How can I check my K-ETA results?

K-ETA approval results are sent to the e-mail address which the applicant provided upon application. You can also check your K-ETA approval status with your application number on the K-ETA official website.

How much is the K-ETA fee?

The K-ETA application fee is ₩ 10,000 (additional fees not included). If you visit a website charging more than ₩10,000, then it is not likely to be the official Korea-ETA website.

Please note: you should only apply for the K-ETA on the official website – www.k-eta.go.kr .

Reminder : Don’t sign up for the K-ETA on any other website.

Can I get a refund if my K-ETA application is refused?

No . The ₩10,000 fee for applying for the K-ETA is non-refundable, even if your application is unsuccessful. The fee covers the cost of processing your K-ETA application, whether it’s successful or not.

Can I apply for K-ETAs for other people?

Yes. One applicant can apply for up to 50 people, such as family members, and can proceed with the K-ETA payment as well. All results will be sent to the applicant’s email address.

How do I pay for the K-ETA fee?

You can use debit cards or global credit cards such as VISA, Master, JCB, or Express.

How long is the validity period of a K-ETA?

The validity period of a K-ETA is 3 years from the date of approval (as of July, 2023). However, if the passport used for the K-ETA application expires in less than 2 years, that K-ETA approval will be valid until the passport expiration date.

In what cases do I need to re-apply for the K-ETA during the validity period?

Note that if there are any changes to your information (nationality, name, sex, date of birth, passport number, passport expiration date, infectious disease and criminal record) you are required to apply for a new K-ETA, even if the previous K-ETA is still valid.

Is there anything else I need to prepare when I am visiting Korea again within my K-ETA validity period?

Even if you are entering the Republic of Korea again within the validity of your K-ETA, you must update any changes to your purpose of entry, address in Korea or contact information through the K-ETA website (My Application Status – e-Arrival Card) before entering Korea.

The Ministry of Justice will not be responsible for any disadvantages caused due to failure of information update by the traveler.

4: Do I Need A Korea-ETA? K-ETA Exemptions

This section will detail possible exceptions to who needs to get a K-ETA, whether the K-ETA applies to transfer passengers, and other exceptions in regards to the K-ETA. Remember, there have been a lot of exclusions for travellers from certain countries and of certain ages, detailed below:

I am from a K-ETA required country but I already have a valid Korean visa. Do I need to get a K-ETA?

No. If you have a valid Korean visa, you do not need to get a K-ETA.

I am from a K-ETA required country but I am a registered foreign resident in Korea. Do I need to get a K-ETA?

No. Residence Card holders (registered foreign residents) don’t need a K-ETA.

Do flight or ship crew members need to get a K-ETA?

When a flight or ship crew member is entering the Republic of Korea as a crew member, that person does not need to get a K-ETA.

I want to travel to Jeju Island. Do I need to get a K-ETA?

Yes. From September 1st, 2022, people travelling to Jeju Island via an international flight that would normally require a K-ETA will need to apply for a K-ETA, even if they don’t visit mainland Korea.

I am a transfer passenger. Do I need to get a K-ETA?

No. Transfer/transit passengers who are not entering Korea do not need to get a K-ETA.

I am a transfer passenger but I need to enter the Republic of Korea for my luggage connection. In this case, am I eligible for K-ETA exemption?

No, you aren’t eligible for an exemption. If you need to go through check-in process after entering for luggage connection, you need to get a K-ETA.

I have a valid ABTC. Do I need to get a K-ETA?

No. Valid ABTC holders will be able to receive their boarding pass without a K-ETA.

Please note: An ABTC card is an APEC Business Travel Card. For more details about this card, check the APEC Business Travel Card website.

I am a diplomatic/official passport holder and I will visit Korea for official purposes. Do I need to get a K-ETA?

In principle, diplomatic and official passport holders are required to obtain a K-ETA. However, for those who requested for K-ETA exemption through relevant organizations in advance, and received approval from the Ministry of Justice, will not be required to get a K-ETA.

I am a member of the United States Forces Korea (USFK). Do I need to get a K-ETA?

No. According to the ‘Agreement under Article IV of the Mutual Defense Treaty between the United States of America and the Republic of Korea, regarding Facilities and Areas and the Status of United States Armed Forces in the Republic of Korea (SOFA)’, members of the United States Armed Forces (USFK service members) do not need to get a K-ETA.

Please note: you will need to present your DOD ID card instead of your passport upon check-in for issuance of your boarding pass.

Do dependents of members of the United States armed forces and members of the civilian component need to get a K-ETA?

Yes. In principle, dependents of USFK members and members of the civilian component are required to obtain a K-ETA. However, those who request K-ETA exemption through the competent authorities of the United States to the Ministry of Justice, and receive approval, they may be exempt from the K-ETA requirement.

5: Problems With Your K-ETA Application

This next section deals with any potential problems you might have when applying for a K-ETA, including any mistakes and how to resolve them.

What happens if I submit false information on the K-ETA application?

In case of submitting false information, the K-ETA approval will be refused or cancelled, and that person may by subject to penalties or face entry restriction according to relevant Korean laws.

What do I do if I made a mistake on the application form?

Before submitting your application, you will be able to correct any mistakes that you made.

I received K-ETA approval with incorrect information. Will I be allowed to enter Korea?

You may face disadvantages such as entry denial. Please re-apply for your K-ETA.

Does my identification photo (face image) for my K-ETA application have to be the same as my passport photo?

No. It does not have to be the same photo, but should comply with the following conditions.

• Should be in colour
• Should be in image file such as JPG
• Image size less than 100KB
• Pixel density less than 600×600
• No accessories such as hats, scarves, or sunglasses
• Recommend less colorful patterned clothing
• Full face, front view (75% of the image)
• Eyes should be open looking straight at the camera

How will my photo and personal information that were provided upon application for the K-ETA be used?

Information provided for the K-ETA application is collected in accordance with Article 7-3 (Electronic Travel Authorization) of the Immigration Act and Article 8-3 (ETA Issuance Criteria) of the Enforcement Regulations of the Immigration Act.

Collected information will be stored in the Immigration Control Information System, and may be disclosed to other government agencies of the Republic of Korea in accordance with relevant domestic laws and regulations.

My K-ETA application was disapproved. What can I do to enter Korea?

You should visit a Korean Embassy (or Consulate) located in your jurisdiction and apply for an entry visa.

Where can I ask questions about K-ETA?

You can make inquiries online with 4 languages (Korean, English, Thai, and Russian) through the K-ETA official website ‘ Ask Us ’.

Do I need to get a K-ETA every time I visit Korea?

No. Once you are approved for a K-ETA, you do not have to apply for 3 years. However, if the passport used for the K-ETA application expires in less than 3 years, that K-ETA approval will be valid until the passport expiration date.

If I have a K-ETA, am I allowed to work in Korea?

No. You cannot engage in profitable activities in Korea with a K-ETA. You must obtain a separate visa that allows you to work and participate in employment activities in Korea.

I am travelling with a friend, can we apply for a K-ETA together?

Yes. One applicant can apply for up to 30 people, such as family members, and can proceed with the K-ETA payment as well. The K-ETA results for each person will be sent to the applicant’s e-mail. Each applicant can also check the K-ETA approval status with the application number and passport number on the K-ETA official website.

Can I fill out the K-ETA application in any language?

Do I Still Need To Self-Quarantine With A K-ETA?

Eligible travellers to Korea with need to get a K-ETA before travelling, but since April 2022 no longer need to self-quarantine unless they test positive for COVID when entering or in Korea.

Why was my K-ETA application rejected?

There are multiple reasons why a K-ETA application can be rejected. The most common one, and one that can be fixed easily, is due to an inappropriate image being uploaded with the application. The image should be under 100kb in size and have dimensions of less than 600 x 600. If your image exceeds these restrictions, it can be rejected. Other reasons why a K-ETA application could be rejected include an incorrect name or passport detail, an ineligible accommodation address (this can happen with AirBnBs), or previous issues when visiting Korea in the past.

Is my K-ETA valid if I didn’t apply through the official website?

Only applications made through the official K-ETA website will be valid and it is strongly recommended not to apply through a 3rd party website. These can be more expensive and may not actually process the K-ETA. If you applied for the K-ETA through a 3rd party website, you should be able to check the validity of the K-ETA on the official website.

Can you complete the K-ETA in any language?

The K-ETA can only be completed in English, Korean, Chinese, Thai, Malay, Spanish, French and Japanese. If you are unable to understand one of those languages, you can contact the Korean embassy in your country to ask for support. Don’t use 3rd party websites to apply for the K-ETA as this could be a fraudulent site and you can lose any monies paid.

Hello Terence. I’m sorry to hear you’re having trouble getting the K-ETA. I’m not part of the K-ETA program, I’m just providing some information for people who are looking to apply for one.

You definitely shouldn’t have to pay $69 to get the K-ETA and no need to sign up with any site other than this one – https://www.k-eta.go.kr/portal/apply/index.do .

If you follow the steps on that website, you can securely upload your details directly to the Korean authorities and they will process your K-ETA. You need to first accept the terms and conditions and then enter in your travel details such as passport number, expiration, when you plan to travel, etc. The website should explain what to do on each step.

Is the K-ETA Application Fee still at the price of 10,000KRW via the website you mentioned?

May i know is quarantine necessarily when enter Korea?

Hi, yes, the K-ETA should always be 10,000 KRW. It’s a fixed price and I don’t think the government will change it any time soon. If you see a higher price, it’s probably from a 3rd party website and they’re trying to take some money from you by doing it for you. Never use the non-official sites as they can’t guarantee your K-ETA, only use the official site.

Right now quarantine isn’t necessary unless you test positive for COVID when you arrive. Everyone in Korea who is infected has to quarantine for 7 days when they’re infected (as of July 2022).

May I know what else should I prepare when entering Seoul, Korea from Malaysia?

When are you travelling? Right now, you’ll need a PCR test 2 days before departure and an on-arrival PCR test within 1 day after you arrive. If you’re worried about travel delays or cancellations, perhaps get travel insurance, but it isn’t necessary. Otherwise, just think about where you want to go and what you want to do. If you’re travelling in October, be careful as it’s a busy time and there are two public holidays then.

Will be going for an exhibition at Seoul on 30/8-3/9/2022. Please advise what should i do.

I assume the PCR testing requirements will be the same then. You should have a PCR test on the 28th or 29th and show your negative result when you fly. Have another PCR test at the airport when you arrive. You can reserve a test on the Q-CODE website , or you can just take one when you arrive. Then, you should wait for the results before going into crowded places (stay in your hotel). Once you get the result, upload it to the Q-CODE site. No need to quarantine except when you wait for the results.

The end of August is hot, so bring the usual summer stuff – light clothes, sun cream, etc. You can buy all that stuff cheaply in Seoul though.

The Q-Code website does not have a link to reserve a test. Please guide me and for the input in Q-Code, this is only require to input when I have take the PCR Test upon arrival at Incheon Airport or before my departure?

Use the Safe 2 Go website to book the on-arrival test and then, once you’ve got the results, upload the information to the Q-CODE website. The menu option for on-arrival PCR test results is in the top-right of the Q-CODE home page and is hidden behind the language selection button. You need to kind of click behind that.

Do I need a visa during my transit from USA to Philippines?

It depends on your passport. If you have US citizenship, you won’t need a visa to transit. Filipino citizenship, you shouldn’t need to as long as you’re not leaving the airport.

As soon as possible. The K-ETA is valid for 2 years once approved. Please apply for it now as it can take up to two weeks to get approved for some people.

Hi, everyone will need to pay the fee as the cost is for processing the application per person. You can apply for all 6 people with just one login, but it will still cost the same. Thanks.

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

• You must have a valid U.S. passport to enter Korea. From April 1, 2023, to December 31, 2024, the  Korean Electronic Travel Authorization (K-ETA)  is not required for US citizens for stays of 90 days or less that are for tourism or business purposes.
• Visa required for all other purposes, including employment, teaching English, and for stays longer than 90 days.

Exceeding your authorized stay or not possessing a valid visa may result in detention and fines.

• In the event of an overstay, apply for a visa extension from the  Korea Immigration Service (KIS)  before attempting to leave the country. Also consult with KIS regarding changes in visa category.

Military Personnel/DOD and their families on orders:

• Consult  DOD Foreign Clearance Guide , and follow all instructions.
• Enter Korea with DOD identification and travel orders.
• Do not transit other countries such as China without a passport and appropriate visas.
• Family Members/Dependents of Military Personnel/DOD on orders must present upon arrival passports valid for at least six months .

U.S. Government Executive Branch personnel on official business and DOD personnel assigned to the U.S. Embassy  (Including family members/dependents):

• Employes assigned to Mission Korea should enter Korea with a diplomatic or official passport and a diplomatic or official Korean visa obtained through their sponsoring agency.  Check with your sponsoring agency about other requirements. 
• TDY visitors traveling to Korea for up to 90 days on diplomatic or official passports do  not  require Korean visas and do  not  require a K-ETA. TDY visitors must obtain country clearance using  Department of State's eCC system  or  DOD APACS system .

HIV/AIDS Restriction:  The Department of State is unaware of any such entry restrictions for visitors or foreign residents in Korea.

COVID-19 Requirements :

• There are no COVID-related entry requirements for U.S. citizens.
• Travel regulations and restrictions are subject to change, sometimes with little notice. You should review the information available on your nearest Korean Embassy or Consulate’s webpage before traveling.

Safety and Security

Public Demonstrations:  Demonstrations and rallies are common in South Korea, particularly near the U.S. Embassy, Seoul City Hall, and areas surrounding military installations. You should avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or rallies. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.

North Korea (The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, DPRK):  An armistice agreement, monitored by the United Nations, has maintained general peace on the Korean peninsula since 1953. Tensions occasionally flare up because of provocative acts by North Korea, including ballistic missile and nuclear tests and limited armed incursions into ROK-held territory. Some provocations have escalated into geographically limited skirmishes. South Korea routinely conducts military training exercises and civil defense drills. North Korea often issues strongly-worded and threatening messages, frequently in connection with these exercises. Please see our  Fact Sheet on North Korea .

Weather-related Events:  Heavy rains and flooding may occur during the June - August monsoon season or the May - November typhoon season. See general information about natural disaster preparedness at the U.S.  Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)  website.

Enroll in the  Smart Traveler Enrollment Program  ( STEP ):  To receive security messages by email and make it easier to locate you in an emergency, register in STEP. 

If the Embassy becomes aware of any specific and credible threat to the safety and security of U.S. citizens, we will inform you through our website, social media, and email.

Crime:  For most visitors, South Korea remains a very safe country. Common crimes occur more frequently in major metropolitan areas, tourist sites, and crowded markets.

• Take routine safety precautions.
• Pay attention to your surroundings.
• Report any concerns to local police.

Violent crime is not common; however, remain vigilant:

• Exercise caution in crowded entertainment, nightlife, and shopping districts.
• If traveling at night, consider traveling in groups.
• Use legitimate taxis or public transportation only.

Victims of Crime:  Call 112 for emergency assistance or to report a crime to local authorities. Call 02-397-4114 to contact the U.S. Embassy. We can:

• Help you find appropriate medical care;
• Assist you in reporting a crime to police;
• Contact relatives or friends on your behalf;
• Explain Korean judicial procedures in general terms;
• Provide an emergency loan for repatriation to the United States and/or limited medical support in cases of destitution;
• Help you find accommodations and flight arrangements to the United States;
• Replace a lost or stolen passport.

Sexual Assault:   The Embassy regularly receives reports of sexual assault from U.S. citizens. Most cases involved young women assaulted by acquaintances they met on social media, dating, or messaging apps. Alcohol is often involved, and Korea’s low overall crime can create a false sense of security.  Specialized hospital units and police are available in South Korea to assist victims, however services in English and responsiveness to the crime are not always consistent. In general, sex crimes are not punished as harshly in South Korea as in the United States and the road to prosecution is a challenging one for victims.

Domestic Violence:  Victim’s assistance resources or battered women’s shelters exist in Seoul and other urban areas but may be limited in rural areas. Most are government administered and require a police referral. Call 112 for emergency assistance or 1366 to reach Korea’s 24-hour domestic violence hotline. Victims may also contact the Embassy, tel. (+82) 2-397-4114.

Lost or Stolen Passports:  If your passport is stolen, file a report at the nearest police station.

Don't buy counterfeit and pirated goods, even if widely available.  It is against South Korean law to purchase these goods and against U.S. law to bring them into the United States. The  Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Division in the U.S. Department of Justice  has more information.

Avoid fraud and scams:  See  Department of State  and  FBI  websites for more information.

Tourism:  The tourism industry is generally regulated and rules with regard to best practices and safety inspections are regularly enforced. Hazardous areas/activities are identified with appropriate signage and professional staff is typically on hand in support of organized activities. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is widely available throughout the country. Outside of a major metropolitan center, it may take more time for first responders and medical professionals to stabilize a patient and provide life-saving assistance. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance. See our webpage for more information on  insurance providers for overseas coverage .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  While in Korea, you are subject to local laws. If you violate Korean laws, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned. Be aware that:

• Immigration violations can lead to arrest, fines, and deportation.
• There is little tolerance for illegal drugs.
• If you mail illegal drugs to/ from Korea, you will be prosecuted.
• Commercial disputes may lead to criminal charges being filed under local laws.

Be aware that some crimes are prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask officials to notify the Embassy. See our  webpage  for further information.

SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES

Dual Nationality and Military Conscription:  Dual national males (including U.S. service members) may be subject to compulsory military service. If you have family ties to South Korea, consult the nearest Korean Embassy or Consulate or the  Korean Military Manpower Administration  regarding potential citizenship obligations  before entering South Korea .

Passport Seizures and Exit Bans:  If you are involved in a criminal investigation or commercial dispute, authorities may seize your passport and/or block your departure. While we may reissue a passport, we cannot lift an exit ban.

Exit Permits:  Exit permits are not generally required. However, if a parent requests a travel restriction on his/her child, Korean authorities may prevent that child from departing even when traveling with the other parent. As of June 1, 2020, foreigners who are long-term residents of the ROK are required to obtain a re-entry permit four business days prior to departure from Korea. The permits are available online through an e-application at the  www.hikorea.go.kr  website.

International Child Abduction:  See our website for information related to the  prevention of international child abduction . 

Working in South Korea:  If working, including teaching or modeling, you must enter with the appropriate work visa. It is not possible to change your visa status without leaving the country. If you begin work without the appropriate visa, you may be arrested, fined, and/or deported. If you are working without a valid work permit and get into a contractual dispute with your employer, you have little legal recourse.

ROK National Security Law:  Authorities may detain, arrest, and imprison persons believed to have committed acts intended to endanger the “security of the state,” including statements deemed to praise the political system and/or officials of the DPRK. 

Customs Regulations: There is strict enforcement of regulations on importing and exporting items such as firearms, narcotics and prescription drugs, non-prescription health supplements, radio equipment, and gold. Importation of materials deemed to be obscene, subversive, or harmful to the public peace is also restricted.

• Amphetamines are illegal in Korea. Do not bring amphetamines or other prescription narcotics into the country without obtaining advance permission in writing from the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety. See the  U.S. Embassy Seoul, Health Information page .

LGBTI Travelers:  Consensual same-sex sexual activity is not criminalized. Korea is a conservative country in regards to LGBTI issues. However, there are an increasing number of LGBTI-oriented clubs, festivals and NGOs advocating for LGBTI issues. The ROK National Human Rights Commission Act prohibits discrimination against individuals because of their sexual orientation, but there are no laws specifying punishment for persons found to have discriminated on this basis. Same-sex marriages are not recognized. Korean citizens can legally change their gender identity.

Mobility Issues:  Korean law mandates access to transportation, communication, and public buildings. Cross walks typically have audio and visual signals. Older buildings and streets are generally less accessible than modern ones. Metro cars and buses in Seoul offer priority seating for the disabled and most metro stations have elevators. Metro platforms include Korean Braille information. Contact individual bus companies and subway associations for specific information. Foreign residents are eligible for disability assistance from local ward offices; assistance varies by ward.

Quality of Care : Western-style medical facilities are available in most large cities. However, not all doctors and staff, are proficient in English. A  list of hospitals  and medical specialists who speak English is available on our website. For emergency ambulance service dial 119. Ambulance services are widely available. For information on medical evacuation from South Korea, please see the State Department’s brochure on  Air Ambulance/MedEvac/Medical Escort Providers . 

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas. Verify your health insurance coverage before traveling overseas. See our webpage for information on  insurance providers for overseas coverage . In most cases, health care providers will require payment in advance of treatment or will not release a patient until hospital bills are paid. We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to include coverage for medical evacuation.

Medication:  Carry prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Most prescription medications, except psychotropic types, can be obtained at Korean pharmacies (brand names often differ). Local pharmacies will require a prescription from a Korean doctor.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety:  Roads are well-paved, traffic signals functional, and most drivers comply with basic traffic laws. South Korea has a significantly higher traffic fatality rate than the United States. Causes of accidents include excessive speed, frequent lane changes without signaling, running red lights, aggressive bus drivers, and weaving motorcyclists. It is recommended that you photo document any traffic accidents.

Be aware that motorcyclists may drive on sidewalks, and drivers do not always yield to pedestrians in marked crosswalks.

Traffic Laws include:

• International driving permit (or ROK license) is required for all drivers.
• Left-hand turns prohibited except with green arrow.
• Seat belts and car seats are mandatory.
• Motorcycle passengers must wear helmets.
• Automobile drivers are presumed to have some fault in accidents involving pedestrians.
• Expect long waits at police stations while police investigate any incidents.
• Police may take your passport or detain you during an investigation.
• Even if negligence is not proven, criminal charges may be filed.
• Blood-alcohol content of 0.03% or higher is considered legally intoxicated.
• Police regularly set up DUI checkpoints. Drivers are required to submit to breathalyzer tests; refusal can result in cancellation of your license.

AVIATION SAFETY OVERSIGHT:  The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the Government of the Republic of Korea's Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of the ROK's air carrier operations. What should I be aware of when traveling to Korea?

You should visit a Korean Embassy (or Consulate) located in your jurisdiction and apply for an entry visa.

Do I need to get a K-ETA every time I visit Korea?

K-ETA or the Korea Electronic Travel Authorization is now a travel essential document for people entering the Republic of Korea from a visa-exempt country.

South Korea has launched K-ETA, which is known as the Korea Electronic Travel Authorization system, to cover the travel of people coming into the country from September 1, 2021. Since most visa waivers for most countries were adjourned when the COVID-19 pandemic peaked in April 2020, this K-ETA form will be necessary for travel. People overseas planning to travel to Korea need to obtain electronic approval before entering the Republic of Korea by submitting related information online such as their travel information and details.

Visa-free abroad invitees need K-ETA approvals to obtain the boarding pass and to enter the Republic of Korea. The K-ETA will be effective for several trips over two years, and the application fee is 10,000 KRW/person. For K-ETA pass documentation, all you need is a valid passport, e-mail address, fee, and photo ID.

Is K-ETA Essential?

It is necessary for nationals of 66 visa-waiver countries and 46 designated visa-free entry countries whose strategy is to travel to the Republic of Korea. However, due to the pandemic, from September 1 onwards, all these people will need to apply for the authorization before travel. 

South Korea K-ETA Requirements

Upon coming, the submission of the PCR Negative Test Result documentation is different from that submitted for visa application. All tourists need to get the test and carry the certificate before leaving for Korea. Those who do not present the report or present an invalid document will be denied entry into Korea.

Exemptions from K-ETA requirement

ABTC holders , excluding U.S. and Canadian nationals, are also exempt from K-ETA requirements.

1. What is K-ETA?

K-ETA (Korea Electronic Travel Authorization) is an online electronic travel authorization that visa-free foreign visitors need to obtain before entering the Republic of Korea for the purpose of tour, visiting relatives, participating in events or meetings, or business (excluding profit-making activities)

2. Who needs to apply for K-ETA?

K-ETA is for nationals of 67 visa waiver countries and nationals of 45 designated visa-free countries. 3. Is it mandatory to get a K-ETA when visiting Korea?

Yes, it is. If a national of a K-ETA required country does not have a K-ETA, he or she will not be allowed to board the flight or ship bound for the Republic of Korea.

4. What do I need to prepare to fill out the K-ETA application form?

You need a valid passport, email address, and a credit or debit card to pay the application fee (non-refundable). If you are applying via PC not via mobile application, you need a photo file to upload your facial image.

5. How long can I stay in Korea if I have a K-ETA?

Generally up to 90 days, but the allowed period of stay may differ by the nationality. Please check the below information.

6. When do I need to apply for the K-ETA?

You should apply for the K-ETA prior to boarding the flight or ship bound for the Republic of Korea. Assessment takes normally 72 hours. However, it can take more than 72 hours due to an unexpected increase of applications, the circumstances of the applicants etc.

7. How long does it take from submitting the K-ETA application to receiving the results?

The applicant can check the result by “Result K-ETA” page within 72 hours after completing the K-ETA application.

8. How much is the K-ETA fee? Can I get a refund if my application is refused?

K-ETA application consular fee is 10 USD, and service fee is 30 USD. It is non-refundable even though the application is rejected.

9. How do I pay for the K-ETA fee?

10. How long is the validity period of a K-ETA?

The validity period of a K-ETA is 2 years from the date of approval. However, if the passport used for the K-ETA application expires in less than 2 years, that K-ETA approval will be valid until the passport expiration date.

11. In what cases do I need to re-apply for the K-ETA during the validity period?

You are required to apply for new K-ETA if there is any change to your information such as nationality, name, sex, date of birth, passport number, passport expiration date, infectious disease or criminal record even though the approved K-ETA is still valid.

12. Is there anything else I need to prepare when I am visiting Korea again within my K-ETA validity period?

Even if you are entering the Republic of Korea again within the validity of your K-ETA, you must update any changes to your purpose of entry, address in Korea or contact information through the k-eta.travel website before entering Korea. This service is not responsible for any disadvantages caused by travelers not updating their information.

13. I am from a K-ETA required country but I already have a valid Korean visa. Do I need to get a K-ETA?

No. If you have a valid Korean visa, you do not need to get a K-ETA.

14. I am from a K-ETA required country but I am a registered foreign resident in Korea. Do I need to get a K-ETA?

No. Residence Card holders (registered foreign residents) do not need to get a K-ETA.

15. Do flight or ship crew members need to get a K-ETA?

When a flight or ship crew member is entering the Republic of Korea as a crew member, that person does not need to get a K-ETA.

16. I want to travel to Jeju Island. Do I need to get a K-ETA?

Yes, Even if you want to visit Jeju Island, you must obtain K-ETA approval before boarding the plane or ship.

17. I am a transfer passenger. Do I need to get a K-ETA?

No. Transfer/transit passengers who are not entering the Republic of Korea do not need to get a K-ETA.

However, if you need to go through the immigration control to recheck your baggage or for any other reasons, you are required to get a K-ETA.

18. I have a valid ABTC. Do I need to get a K-ETA?

No. Valid ABTC holders will be able to receive their boarding pass without a K-ETA. But, USA and Canada are not included.

19. I am a diplomatic/official passport holder and I will visit Korea for official purposes. Do I need to get a K-ETA?

In principle, diplomatic and official passport holders are required to obtain a K-ETA. However, for those who requested for K-ETA exemption through relevant organizations in advance, and received approval from the Ministry of Justice, will not be required to get a K-ETA.

20. I am a member of the United States Forces Korea (USFK). Do I need to get a K-ETA?

No. According to the ‘Agreement under Article IV of the Mutual Defense Treaty between the United States of America and the Republic of Korea, regarding Facilities and Areas and the Status of United States Armed Forces in the Republic of Korea (SOFA)’, members of the United States Armed Forces (USFK service members) do not need to get a K-ETA. Note that you will need to present your DOD ID card instead of your passport upon check-in for issuance of your boarding pass.

21. Do dependents of members of the United States armed forces and members of the civilian component need to get a K-ETA?

Yes. In principle, dependents of USFK members and members of the civilian component are required to obtain a K-ETA.

However, those who request K-ETA exemption through the competent authorities of the United States to the Ministry of Justice, and receive approval, they may be exempt from the K-ETA requirement.

22. If I have a K-ETA, am I allowed to work in Korea?

No. You cannot engage in profitable activities in Korea with a K-ETA. You must obtain a separate visa that allows you to work and participate in employment activities in Korea.

23. Does my identification photo (face image) for my K-ETA application have to be the same as my passport photo?

No. It does not have to be the same photo, but should comply with the following conditions.

• Should be in color
• Should be in image file such as JPG
• Image size less than 100KB
• Pixel density less than 700*700
• No accessories such as hats, scarves, or sunglasses
• Recommend less colorful patterned clothing
• Full face, front view (75% of the image), eyes should be open looking straight at the camera

24. How long does it take to apply for a K-ETA?

It will take approximately 10 minutes.

25. How will my photo and personal information that were provided upon application for the K-ETA be used?

Information provided for the K-ETA application is collected in accordance with Article 7-3 (Electronic Travel Authorization) of the Immigration Act and Article 101 (Processing of sensitive and unique information), and collected information will be stored in the Immigration Control Information System, and may be disclosed to other government agencies of the Republic of Korea in accordance with relevant domestic laws and regulations.

26. What happens if I submit false information on the K-ETA application?

In case of submitting false information, the K-ETA approval will be refused or cancelled, and that person may by subject to penalties or face entry restriction according to relevant Korean laws.

27. What do I do if I made a mistake on the application form?

Before submitting your application, you will be able to correct any mistakes that you made.

28. I received K-ETA approval with incorrect information. Will I be allowed to enter Korea?

You may face disadvantages such as entry denial. Please re-apply for your K-ETA.

29. How can I check my K-ETA results?

The applicant can check the result by “Result K-ETA” page.

30. Do I need to get a K-ETA every time I visit Korea?

No. Once you are approved of a K-ETA, you do not have to apply for 2 years. However, if the passport used for the K-ETA application expires in less than 2 years, that K-ETA approval will be valid until the passport expiration date.

31. I am travelling with a friend, can we apply for K-ETA together?

Yes. One applicant can apply for up to 30 people, such as family members, and can proceed with the K-ETA payment as well. The K-ETA results for each person will be sent to the applicant’s e-mail. Each applicant can also check the K-ETA approval status with the application number and passport number on the K-ETA official website.

32. My K-ETA application was disapproved. What can I do to enter Korea?

We are unable to give you the reason for the denial since it is subject to non-disclosure information. You should visit a Korean Embassy (or Consulate) located in your jurisdiction and apply for an entry visa.

33. Can I fill out the K-ETA application in any language?

No. When filling out the K-ETA application, you can apply based on what is written in English. However, the question is offered in multiple languages.

35. I would like to know about the quarantine procedures regarding COVID-19.

36. I am a national from a country where visa-free entry is not allowed, but if I depart from (or reside in) a country where visa-free entry is allowed to Korea, can I apply for K-ETA?

The eligibility of the K-ETA application depends on the nationality stated on the bio page of the passport, not on the country of residence or departure. Therefore, if you are a national of a country where visa-free entry is not allowed, you cannot apply for K-ETA.

37. I am a dual citizenship holder holding both Korean passport and alternate country’s passport. Do I need to apply for K-ETA?

The dual citizenship holders are required to present their Korean passport for immigration inspection when they enter or exit the Republic of Korea since they are not allowed to exercise the foreign nationality in the Republic of Korea.

38. I accidently submitted a K-ETA application with wrong personal information (passport number, nationality, gender etc.), but I got K-ETA approval. Can I edit the information?

Once the application is submitted, you cannot edit your passport number, nationality, gender and other personal information. Therefore, you must re-apply for K-ETA with the correct personal information.

Even if you have K-ETA approval, you may not be able to board the plane/ship or enter the country if there are any discrepancies between K-ETA and passport information.

K-ETA is a digital travel authorization that is required by any foreign visitors that do not require a visa. It needs to be obtained before entering the Republic of Korea. The purpose of travel should be tourism, visiting a family member, participating in events or meetings, or commercial business (excluding the pursuit of profit). It is mandatory for visa-free and visa-waiver countries. Anyone without a valid visa or K-ETA will not be allowed to board a plane to South Korea. This is meant to make immigration and customs a smoother process upon landing, streamlining the whole process. 

How long does it take to get K-ETA approved?

K-ETA is available for eligible people from countries that don’t require a visa to enter South Korea. It must be obtained before boarding a flight or ship and can take up to 72 hours to process. That means you should apply for it at least a month before your trip just to be safe but you could apply for it up to a few days before departure. 

On average, most people in our travel groups say they’ve received results within a day but it can take longer.

How long is K-ETA valid for?

It’s valid for 2 years from the date it is approved, but it actually doesn’t guarantee entry to the Republic of Korea.  Once you land, the immigration office at the airport will be the final decider on that verdict.  If it has not expired, you still have to apply for a new K-ETA if there are any changes to your personal information such as name, date of birth, or sex. The same is true for any changes to your passport which will be your lifeline abroad. You are also required to update any personal info on K-ETA if your Korean address, the purpose of entry, or contact information that was written on your approved application before entering Korea changes. You could be denied entry if your information does not match.

Which countries can get the K-ETA?

Below are the 112 countries that are allowed entry into South Korea after filling out the K-ETA. This was last updated on November 1st, 2022. Those not on here are not eligible to enter South Korea through K-ETA, but would require a visa from the embassy.

What do I need to prepare to fill in the K-ETA?

The items you will need are a valid passport, credit card (for paying the KRW10,000 fee), email address, and a recent profile photo (700 pixels or less) of yourself for uploading.  The results will show up in your email as well as be available on the website. You will also need to include the phone number of where you will be staying and the address. 

You can have a proxy fill out the application as well as apply for up to 30 people at once. 

Steps to fill in the K-ETA form

Put in your continent, and nationality and agree to all the questions they give you. You will then need to type in your passport number and personal email address. Once you have completed that, you will be required to upload either a picture of your passport identification page or input the information manually. It is advised that if you take the photo with your phone, you will need to crop it since the image will be too large.

Next, you will select an option in the “Purpose of entry” section. They will include things like tourism, conference, disease treatment, sports game, etc. The translation is slightly off, but you should have no problem selecting the choice that best fits your reasons for travel. 

After that, you will need to write in your postal code as it pertains to your Korean address. It will search for your address as you type, so once you make sure it displays the exact one that you will be residing at, click it and move on. For the next part, they will once again ask for a photo. You’ll need to resize it if you take it on your phone once again due to the size. 

Lastly, you will be presented with a confirmation page where you confirm that all your information has been imputed accurately. 

The payment page is your last stop. All you need to do is input your card number and date before pressing the large red button at the bottom. Then boom! Your application is complete and good to go!

How much does the K-ETA Cost?

The cost is 10,000 KRW which is equivalent to $7.28 USD. However, there are $9-10additinal fees that are excluded from the base price. It is also important to know that you are giving money to the actual K-ETA website and not a third party that supposedly moves through them since there are many fake sites that have been impersonating K-ETA. They also aren’t responsible for any money you lost to these scam websites. If you pay through an eligible third-party site that charges extra fees for applying, you will not be reimbursed. That’s why you should definitely apply on the K-ETA official website.

You don’t need to input medical information from what I know. I haven’t had to do the K-ETA as a resident. But it’s just the same entrance form they used to have you fill out on airplanes before you’d arrive in another country. It just wants you basic information, name, passport number, address upon arrival, not medical info.

I will be traveling to Korea on a cruise ship which is where we will be staying overnight. The K-ETA requires a local phone number and address and will not take the name of the ship. How do we fill out this section of the form?

That’s a new one… if you know where you’re docking, perhaps cruise ships are requested to use the dock address and their information for the K-ETA. I would guess that your cruise ship company would know as they’re required to do it as well.

I am hoping to travel to Korea but am wondering if it is hard as a single older person to travel in the country?

It’s not hard at all to travel as a solo person in Korea. The only issue that you might have is when it comes to eating. Some places are really built for group dining. For example, on Jeju Island, a lot of BBQ restaurants won’t serve just one person. But, in Seoul, it’s a lot easier. Hope that helps.

Where to go in 2024: The best places to visit

So many places to see in the world. So many people eager to see them.

International tourism reached about 90% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023, and the United States issued a record number of  passports . And if you visited any popular destination over the summer, you’d probably argue it was more crowded than ever.

So maybe it’s time to look at places that are still largely undiscovered, or alluring in the offseason, or frequently overlooked for their larger first cities or neighbors. Maybe it’s time to head to places that are making it easier for tourists to visit and those that pay close attention to encouraging tourism that’s sustainable.

With those things in mind, CNN Travel chose 24 places to consider as you make your 2024 plans:

Sumba, Indonesia

For those looking for a beach destination that prioritizes community consciousness and sustainability, the Indonesian island of Sumba delivers.

With its remote villages, untouched forests, ancient rituals and world-class surf breaks, Sumba is the perfect antidote to the crowds of Bali, which is just an hour’s flight away. It might not be internationally famous yet, but that doesn’t mean it’s small. Sumba is more than 4,000 square miles in size (more than 10,000 square kilometers) – twice the size of Bali.

It was the  Nihi Sumba  resort that brought this island into luxury seekers’ sights when it first opened in 2012. More than a decade on, Sumba has welcomed several new luxury eco-resorts. Turkey’s Black Sea coast

Tartu, Estonia

Pucker up. Tartu, in southern Estonia, has been named a European Capital of Culture for 2024 — with  special attention paid to kissing . One of this university city’s most celebrated sights is its statue of two students locked in a passionate embrace, but here in the “City of Good Thoughts,” the love-in is more high-minded than carnal.

Tartu is renowned as Estonia’s intellectual center, home to its oldest university as well as the must-visit Estonian National Museum and the impressive Science Centre AHHAA, the largest science museum in the Baltics.

The Old Town is the perfect place to base yourself, but just north of the city center on the banks of the Emajõgi River, Supilinn (“Soup Town”) is also worth a visit. Tainan, Taiwan

Celebrating its 400th anniversary in 2024, Tainan has become a Taiwan hotspot on the international stage. This southern city has surpassed the capital, Taipei, to boast the highest overall hotel occupancy rate in Taiwan in the past two years.

What makes it so special? Tainan is considered the street food capital of Taiwan and is loved for its beef soups and oyster omelets, otherworldly natural landscapes (check out Tsao Shan Moon World), scenic sunsets over salt farms, colorful old temples and cool new museums.

Northwest Michigan

Refreshing, unsalty Lake Michigan lures boatloads of tourists in summer, but the shoreline, quaint towns and rolling countryside of Northwest Michigan have plenty to offer year-round.

On Grand Traverse Bay, Traverse City makes a great home base for exploring wineries on the Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas or picking cherries or apples in season. Then fall’s foliage is ripe for peeping, followed by winter’s inviting blankets of snow.

From Traverse City, the scenic M-22 highway winds up the Leelanau Peninsula and hooks back down through Leland, home to a  historic fishing village  and a collection of interesting  shops and galleries .

Glen Arbor is another town worth perusing on the way to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore , where off M-109 an all-sand, 3.5-mile hike over massive dunes to the Great Lake and back preps hardy hikers for a delicious dinner.

Farm Club , a farm-restaurant hybrid seven miles from downtown Traverse City, serves beautifully prepared dishes showcasing the region’s ingredients — many grown on site — in a minimalist, barnlike space that spills outdoors.  —Marnie Hunter

Trans Dinarica Cycle Route, Balkans

Launching in 2024, the Trans Dinarica Cycle Route will be the first and only bike route to link all eight countries of the Western Balkans. The 100-stage trail is designed for cyclists of all abilities and its 4,000 kilometers (2,485 miles) is made up of quiet asphalt roads, forest trails and bike paths.

Riders can enjoy Albania and Croatia’s spectacular coastlines, Kosovo’s national parks, Montenegro’s rugged mountains and lush woodland and sparkling rivers throughout Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Serbia.

Culebra, Puerto Rico

Puerto Rico is large and makes for a great island escape. But what if you want an escape from your great island escape? That’s where little Culebra comes in. It’s about 20 miles (32 kilometers) off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico and world away from  San Juan’s noisy, rum-soaked nightlife .

The emphasis here is on outdoor activities and unwinding. Be sure to check out  Flamenco Beach , curving for about a mile around a sheltered bay. It has little in the way of waves, making it a superb spot for snorkeling and swimming. And a graffitied tank — a US military relic — offers a striking photo op.

Much of the island is  a natural refuge , and you can also go hiking, snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking and fishing. Take  a day trip  or  stay over  and make it your main destination.  —Forrest Brown

This southern African nation is trying hard to make a break on the tourism scene, having recently introduced a  quick-approval tourism e-visa . While major tourism infrastructure might not be up to speed yet, it’s a chance to explore a country still off the travel radar.

The capital of Luanda has a reputation as a pricey party city, but out in the wide-open spaces beyond, Angola has some jaw-droppingly spectacular scenery and cultural treats. Second city  Lubango  offers Portuguese colonial architecture, an impressive Rio-style Christ the King hilltop statue and access to the Tundavala Gap, a giddying plunge from cool tablelands into shimmering dusty plains.

Also worth a look: the dramatic 1,300-foot-wide (396 meters) Calendula Falls and Atlantic coastline surfing paradises such as Barra do Kwanza and Cabo Ledo.  —BN

Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada

Not to be confused with St. John’s, the capital of Newfoundland, Saint John is located in New Brunswick — also on Canada’s east coast. This charming little city is an excellent base from which to enjoy the nearby  Bay of Fundy , famed for having the world’s highest tides.

The city itself is filled with historic architecture, including the  Saint John City Market , a National Historic Site of Canada. Built from 1874 to 1876, it’s filled with shops and food venues. A five-minute walk away is the  Saint John Arts Centre . Set in the city’s historic Carnegie Building, it’s the only former Carnegie Library in eastern Canada.

South Korea

With word that “Squid Game” — still the most-watched show on Netflix — is set to return with a new season in 2024, it’s time once again to embrace the K-wave.

Thankfully, travel to the country is easier than ever before. The government is waiving its K-ETA requirement — the electronic travel visa for South Korea — for travelers from  22 countries  till the end of 2024 as part of its Visit Korea Year campaign.

This is a country that truly has it all. After exploring futuristic cities such as Seoul and Busan, the cultural and historic side of old Korea awaits at Andong, dubbed the “Spirit of South Korea,” or the seven cemeteries of the ancient  Gaya Tumuli , newly inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023.  —MHW

Sandwiched on the Adriatic coast between Greece and Montenegro, it’s astonishing that Albania wasn’t more popular as a beach destination before. But its wallet-friendly prices have seen tourism boom here over the past few years — so much so that in 2023, record numbers of Italians flocked across the Adriatic for their bargain summer breaks.

2024 sees the opening of a new airport at Vlorë, on the coast, which will make those beach trips easier. But there’s far more to Albania than its coast. The country has a rich culture, including Christian and Muslim history, with historical centers in towns such as Berat and Gjirokastër, as well as jaw-dropping mountain landscapes (Theth is the most popular).

In 2023, Albania got Europe’s first wild river national park, around the 168-mile (270-kilometer)  Vjosa River  — or to go really off the beaten track book a self-drive tour with  Drive Albania .  —Julia Buckley

Stretching about 2,700 miles from top to toe, long and slim Chile offers a little something for everyone.  In the north, spectacular landscapes simulate  Mars on Earth  in the Atacama Desert, where the 51-room  Our Habitas Atacama  emphasizes sustainability.  The new hotel is a good fit for the “world’s leading green destination,” a title Chile just picked up at the World Travel Awards for the second year in a row.

The natural world puts its best foot forward all over the country: Thousands of miles of Pacific coastline to the west, the towering Andes in the east and lakes, volcanoes and wild Patagonia in the south.

World-class skiing in July and August — a welcome break from the sweltering Northern Hemisphere — is two hours or less from the capital, Santiago. And the new high-altitude Parque Nacional Glaciares near the city protects land in the country’s most populous and  historically little-protected  area.  —MH

Abrolhos Islands, Western Australia

Every year there’s another installment in the soap opera surrounding the Great Barrier Reef — will it be de-listed by UNESCO? Has the coral regrowth gone well this season?

For tourists who’d rather not wade into the situation, there’s another way to experience some of Australia’s gorgeous underwater bounty. About 37 miles (60 kilometers) off the coast of Western Australia, the lesser-known  Abrolhos Islands  are home to some of the most beautiful scenery of the country’s Coral Coast, above and below the water.

Humpback whales pass through in the Southern Hemisphere’s winter, and lucky travelers may catch a glimpse of Australian Sea Lions. There are no hotels on the islands, so intrepid visitors can either overnight in the town of Geraldton or splash out for a liveaboard boat, which provides opportunities to watch brilliant sunsets over the Indian Ocean and scuba dive in the early hours when the fish are at their most active.  —Lilit Marcus

Macedonia, Greece

Athens and the islands get more crowded every year, but in northern Greece, the region of Macedonia is relatively free from overtourism. Yet it has everything visitors flock elsewhere in Greece to see: archaeological sites, history-rich towns and beaches galore.

This was the land of Alexander the Great. His father, Philip II of Macedon, is buried at Vergina, where his tomb has been turned into a world-class  subterranean museum  displaying the finds. Nearby, there are Byzantine remains in the hilltop city Veria, and superb wineries such as  Kir-Yianni  in the rolling hills around Naousa.

Thessaloniki — the region’s capital and Greece’s second city — is a gastro hub as well as a mishmash of architectural and archaeological eras. Near the city are the sandy beaches of Halkidiki; toward the border with Thrace are archaeological spots like ancient Philippi, and the city of Kavala, whose Ottoman past shows in every building . —JB

It may be most famous for the engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal, but this Central American country is so much more than a transit destination.

Not only does Panama have a vibrant capital city with a historic old quarter that’s listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the country also holds over a dozen national parks, including Parque Nacional Volcán Barú, the highest point in Panama.

Galicia, Spain

Galicia’s regional capital city,  Santiago de Compostela , has long been on the tourist map thanks to its striking 12 th -century cathedral, which is the endpoint for the hundreds of thousands of walkers who  embark on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage  each year. But even if you weren’t planning on packing your walking boots, bustling Santiago should be on your radar.

And for spectacular views, head to  Cabo Fisterra , a rocky peninsula home to the picturesque Finisterre lighthouse. The former lighthouse residence is the  Hotel O Semáforo de Fisterra . Lighthouses are a bit of a theme in Galicia — there are 19 in total, including the UNESCO-protected 1st-century  Tower of Hercules , believed to be the world’s oldest surviving Roman lighthouse.  —Francesca Street

Singapore’s offshore islands

The city-state of Singapore shows urbanism at its finest: biophilic skyscrapers, neon-lit supertrees and six-star hotels all outdoing each other to redefine “luxury.” But venturing off the peninsula is quickly becoming a more interesting option.

Singapore is developing some of its smaller, uninhabited islands by, well, not developing them. Just a ferry ride away from the mainland, Lazarus Island is now home to a few rentable tiny houses made with reconstituted wood and powered by solar energy. Nearby, Sisters’ Island will open the country’s first marine park — including a sea turtle hatchery and coral protection area — in 2024.

Already open for exploring is St. John’s Island, where a 1.7-mile trail highlights native plants and flowers while shining a light on the island’s colorful history, which included a period as a quarantine center during a cholera outbreak. It’s a fitting place to think about life after a pandemic.  —LM

Mérida, Mexico

The Yucatán Peninsula is best known for its tropical beaches, but venture inland, and you’re in for an unexpected urban treat.

“Mérida’s uniqueness comes from a blend of Mayan and colonial heritage,” said David Casanova, who has a  real estate YouTube channel  on Yucatán state’s capital city with his wife, Megan Sequeira Casanova. “The city’s excitement starts with its diverse cuisine and friendly locals and expands to its year-long favorable weather.”

In town, Paseo de Montejo is lined with historic mansions, museums, art galleries and local vendors. The Casanovas tout the city’s boutique hotels, including  Kuka y Naranjo . For nearby getaways, there’s Progreso Beach (less than an hour away), fascinating Mayan ruins and underground water caves called cenotes.

If you’re concerned about personal safety in Mexico, the  US State Department  rates Yucatán and Campache states as the two safest as of December.  —FB

A longtime travel favorite thanks to its diverse landscape and spectacular architecture, Morocco has bounced back determinedly after a devastating earthquake this past September.

While visitors tend to congregate in popular cities such as Marrakech, Rabat and Fes, the country certainly isn’t short of less crowded spots that are arguably just as alluring. Standouts include Tétouan, the city near the first  Regis Hotels and Resorts Morocco property , and the historic Meknes, which is among the country’s nine UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Morocco is proving to be a world leader when it comes to sustainable tourism, with the launch of various initiatives to boost its renewable energy generation. The country is also home to a number of significant eco-friendly hotels, including the Berber-run  Kasbah du Toubkal , located at the base of the spectacular High Atlas Mountains.  —THG

Florida’s freshwater springs

How would you like to immerse in water clear as gin any day of the year? You can do that in some of the 1,000 or more recognized  fresh-water springs  scattered around northern and central Florida.

These  pristine natural pools  provide stable temps and visibility for swimming, tubing, snorkeling, diving, wildlife viewing and more. Here are a few of the best:

Wakulla Springs  has a swimming area in 70 F (21 C) degree water, and the state park offers a boat ride tour. The  depth at the vent  is about 185 feet (56 meters).  Rainbow Springs  is considered one of the most beautiful in the state.  Ginnie Springs , a privately owned site, is renowned for its diving and cavern.  —FB

Texas Hill Country

In the heart of Texas, Hill Country boasts its own natural springs. One prime spot,  Krause Springs  in Spicewood, lures visitors with more than its spring-fed pool and natural swimming hole — there’s also a butterfly garden full of magical wind chimes. And the  Blue Bonnet Cafe  — home to some of the world’s most divine cream pies — is just a short drive away in Marble Falls .

Meanderers will also find rolling hills and hiking trails, winding rivers,  wineries , barbecue, music and dance halls, plus an explosion of wildflowers in March and April. And in 2024, April also brings a celestial spectacle to Hill Country — the total solar eclipse on April 8.

Gruene Hall  in New Braunfels is legendary among Texas’  historic dance halls , and Luckenbach, a tiny hamlet outside the larger German-influenced town of Fredericksburg, has a dance hall and regular pickers’ circles under the oak trees.  —MH

One of the smaller and lesser-known emirates of the United Arab Emirates, Fujairah is as mellow as it is beautiful. Filled with spectacular mountain ranges and pristine beaches, it’s significantly less developed than the likes of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, offering an authentic and tranquil vibe that’s hard to beat.

Fujairah has a cooler climate compared with the other emirates because of its mountainous setting, but the winter months are definitely the most pleasant time to visit.

Snoopy Island, a snorkeling spot that looks like the famous cartoon dog lying on his back, is a top draw thanks to its crystal-clear waters and coral reefs, while the cascading waterfalls of the Wadi Wurayah National Park are another must-see.  —THG

The jaw-dropping landscapes of Greenland — an autonomous territory of Denmark situated northeast of Canada — are set to get a little more accessible for international travelers this year.

New international airports are opening in Greenland’s capital, Nuuk, and the coastal city of Ilulissat. These aviation hubs promise longer runways that will be able to handle larger commercial aircraft. The climate crisis is a visible, real threat in Greenland, and investment in the tourism sphere is increasing as changing climates  pose roadblocks to traditional industries.

Learn more about how Greeenland is adapting, and the stories of the Inuit people who’ve lived in the region for thousands of years at the  Icefjord Centre  in Ilulissat on the West Coast. Colorful Ilulissat is also home to the UNESCO-listed Ilulissat Icefjord, which offers the staggering sight of a bay filled with floating icebergs. Pastor tells firsthand account of captivity in North Korea at Liberty University’s Unify Korea Summit

In conjunction with this year’s Unify Korea Summit, Liberty University welcomed South Korean-born Canadian Pastor Hyeon Soo Lim to the Convocation stage on Friday morning to highlight the incredible need for the Gospel in North Korea.

Speaking in his native Korean tongue as an English translation was shown on the videoboard, Lim spoke about the 949 days he was imprisoned in North Korea while serving a life sentence of hard labor before his eventual release in 2017. While imprisoned, he was subjected to verbal abuse and given very little food, leading to him losing almost 50 pounds in two months. He was also prohibited from watching television, listening to the radio, or reading books, but was allowed one copy of the Bible. He described this blessing as “the joy of finding living water in the desert.”

Throughout the day, Lim contented himself with praying and memorizing Scripture and reading his Bible during work breaks. Meanwhile, his captors began investigating additional ways to incriminate him, but all they could find online about him were his sermons. Through listening to these sermons, the prison guards’ hearts began to soften. Eventually they started bringing him more food and showing him more care, and some even came to him for family counseling.

“Seeing this change, I realized more clearly that faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the Word of Christ,” Lim said. “Seeing such a transformation in the core leaders of the Communist Party, I became certain that one day when North Korea opens up and the Gospel is spread, North Korea will soon be transformed into the army of the Lord. When the people who will spread the Gospel in North Korea are ready, God will open the doors of North Korea. If Korea is the end of the earth for world evangelization, we must go to the ends of the earth to preach the Gospel.”

Since his release, Lim has continued to share the Gospel as well as train additional missionaries who will go into the country. He said God has given him many visions about North Korea’s future prosperity.

Noting the numerous needs afflicting the country, including a lack of medical practitioners, English teachers, farmers, theology professors, evangelists in businesses, and church planters, he welcomed anyone who feels called to join in serving the North Korean Church.

“Anyone who is prepared to love and serve others is welcome,” he said. “The evangelization of North Korea is the shortcut to world evangelization. North Korea is the most fertile ground for spreading the Gospel. We need the strength of America. Who will go? When He asks, may you and I be able to respond, ‘Here I am.’”

Lim’s message was part of Liberty’s second annual Unify Korea Summit, hosted by the John W. Rawlings School of Divinity, the Global Studies Department, and the Unify Korea student club. Students, faculty and staff, and Korean pastors took part in the two-day summit.

On Thursday night, Caleb Mission founder and human rights activist Pastor Seungeun Kim shared about his efforts in rescuing North Korean defectors during a roundtable event in the Montview Alumni Ballroom. Caleb Mission, founded in 2000, works to rescue defectors and train them as missionaries. So far, the organization has rescued 1,026 individuals from the North Korean regime.

Kim was born in 1965 into a Christian family and from a young age learned to be content, despite having very little money.

“Even though we had nothing, we had the Gospel and we had faith in Jesus Christ, so our family always had gratitude and freedom in Jesus,” he said through a translator.

At the age of 13, he began working as a cook on a fishing boat and when he was unsuccessful, he began praying for God’s guidance. Although he did not hear an immediate response, he later met a missionary who asked him to serve alongside him. He then traveled to the border between North Korea and China and witnessed the incredible hardship of those who attempted to flee North Korea. Praying again that God would use him, he felt called to rescue future defectors.

Since that day, Kim has worked alongside his wife, a former North Korean defector herself, to lead people out of danger and into a life of freedom. Their work has taken them on dangerous journeys of 7,500 miles through desert, jungle, and stormy ocean. He was once able to save defectors traveling by ocean because of his previous work experiences on a fishing boat.

Through his time of ministry, Kim has been subjected to numerous hardships, including a broken neck, three back surgeries, and the death of his son at the age of 7. Yet, despite these trials, he has continued the work set out for him understanding the love that God has for His children in North Korea.

“Based on my own experience, I believe that if you put your hope in Jesus, God will use your suffering for the productive work to build his kingdom. … Despite appearing to have nothing, God made me have everything through faith.”

Caleb Mission faced additional roadblocks during the COVID-19 pandemic, when China instituted heavy restrictions to slow the spread of the virus. Although Kim could no longer rescue defectors at the same rate as in the past, he and his team decided to use that time to build their community in South Korea. Once they finished construction, the pandemic ended and Caleb Mission could once again rescue defectors, however, now at 10 times the previous cost.

Facing yet another obstacle, Kim began to feel discouraged, but his fears were relieved with the release of a new documentary, “Beyond Utopia,” which provides an inside look into the daring covert rescues, with raw, harrowing footage from actual escapes and interviews with North Korean defectors. Kim and his heroic work with Caleb Mission played a prominent role in the film. The documentary led to an increase of support, offsetting the rising costs of the rescue operations.

Following the discussion, Kim participated in a brief Q&A session with roundtable attendees. Thursday’s event also included a time of prayer for North Korea, led by Global Studies Professor Dr. Tim Chang.

Liberty University hosted a screening of “Beyond Utopia” on Friday afternoon in the Towns Auditorium in the School of Business. The award-winning documentary has been viewed over 1 million times on PBS alone.

Senior James Gengero, president of the Unify Korea student club at Liberty, said it is important for American Christians to remain informed on the situation in North Korea and to do everything possible to assist in the transformation of North Korea for the Gospel.

“We want to raise awareness about the current events in North and South Korea,” he said. “We also want people to raise money and pray. The main thing is to advocate for a unification not just politically but spiritually — that we would have a unified Korea for Jesus. Not for one president or another, not for one political nation or another, but that all would cry the name of Jesus and they would see Him as the heavenly Father instead of anyone else.”

1) What is K-ETA?

     ▷ K-ETA is an online electronic travel authorization that visa-free foreign visitors need to obtain before entering the Republic of Korea for the purpose of tour, visiting relatives, participating in events/meetings or business (excluding profit-making activities).

2) Who is eligible to apply for K-ETA?

     ▷ Please visit the official  K-ETA website (click)  and look for your country in the country dropbox. If you are able to locate your country, you are eligible to apply for K-ETA. If you are  NOT  able to locate your country, it means you are  NOT eligible  to apply for K-ETA and would need to apply for visa instead to enter Korea.

3) What is the general processing time for K-ETA application?

     ▷ Please note that assessment can take more than 72 hours depending on the situation (eg. high volume of K-ETA applications, applicant's circumstances...etc). Therefore, you should apply for K-ETA early.

4) What is the validity of K-ETA and do I need to apply for K-ETA every time I visit Korea?

     ▷ K-ETA is valid for 3 years once issued. It can be used multiple times within its validity. However, if you renew your passport, you are required to apply for a new K-ETA.

5) My K-ETA is approved. Do I need to apply for visa separately?

    ▷ Please ensure that you are applying for K-ETA on the  official K-ETA website (click)  as the fee is 10,000 KRW (excluding 3% card processing fee). The K-ETA Center is not responsible for any application done via unauthorized 3rd party website.

8) I applied for K-ETA a few days ago but have not receive any approval. What should I do next?

    ▷ We wish to  inform you that K-ETA is  NOT  assessed / approved by the Embassy. P lease contact the K-ETA Center via the  online enquiry form . Travellers are strongly encouraged to apply for K-ETA early to avoid unnecessary inconvenience.

9) My K-ETA application has been rejected. I would like to know why and what should I do next.

     ▷ No, we do not accept consolidated bank statement. Please provide the itemized statement.

9) I do not have a Singapore bank acccount. Can I submit my overseas bank account statements instead?

      ▷ No, we do not accept overseas bank account statements for visa applications in Singapore.

10) Do I need to purchase air tickets or book my accommodation before applying for visa?

       ▷ No, air tickets and accommodation bookings are not required for visa application.

11) Is printing or photocopying service available at the Embassy?

       ▷ We regret to inform you that printing/photocopying service is not available at the Embassy. Please prepare your documents prior to your visit.

12) Do you have a photo booth at the Embassy for visa application?

       ▷ No. The photo booth at the Embassy is meant for Korean passport renewal and does not produce physical photos.

13)  What is the processing time for visa application? Does the Embassy offer express service?

       ▷ The processing time for visa application is generally  4 working days , unless otherwise specified. This is  inclusive of the day of submission by the visa agent at our office (not the day you pass your application to the agent). We do not offer urgent/express service. Please time your application accordingly.

14)   I applied for visa through an appointed visa agent. Can I check with the Embassy on the status of my application?  

      ▷ The Embassy does not provide status updates on visa application via email or phone call.  If you need to know the collection date of your passport, please check with your agent.  Alternatively, you can check the progress of your application online at  https://visa.go.kr/openPage.do?MENU_ID=10301  by keying in your information (see below for details).

15) My visa is approved but there is no visa sticker in my passport.

        ▷   Please note that physical visa stickers are not issued since 01 July 2020. Applicants may visit Korean Visa Portal  (www.visa.go.kr)  to print out the Visa Grant Notice. Please refer to this  guide (click)   on how to print the Visa Grant Notice.

16) Since there will be no visa sticker affixed to the passport, why is my passport being kept at the Embassy?

       ▷ Your passport must be scanned and will go through checks during the processing of your visa application. Therefore, your passport must be kept at the Embassy.

17) My visa has been denied. Can I know the reason for rejection and if an appeal is possible?

       ▷ In general, we do not provide the reason for rejection. In the event if an appeal is possible, it will be conveyed to the appointed visa agent during the collection. Appeal can be done via the same appointed visa agent or by the applicant in person with his/her passport and additional document(s)  within 2 weeks of rejection . The Embassy does  NOT  charge a fee for appeals.

18) I travel to Korea often. Can I apply for multiple entry visa?

        ▷  From 01 June 2022, the Embassy will resume issuance of double entry and multiple entry visas. If you require double entry or multiple entry, please inform your chosen visa agent. Issuance of multiple entry is still subjected to approval.

19) I have a valid multiple entry visa issued previously. Can I use it to enter Korea?

        ▷  Multiple entry visas that are still valid can be used to enter Korea.  Transfer of visa (click)  is required if the valid multiple entry visa is in your old passport. Please note that transfer of visa is  NOT  allowed if the passport linked to the visa is reported lost.

20) Can I travel to Korea with my new passport and old passport bearing the valid visa instead of transferring the visa?

       ▷ Please note that the airlines can deny you from boarding due to failure to transfer your visa. Therefore, please transfer your visa as advised.

21) I applied for transfer of visa online but did not receive any status update from the Embassy.

      ▷ Please note that we will  NOT  be contacting you separately to provide any status update on your application unless additional document(s) is required. You can check if your application was successfully submitted by following the steps listed  here (click) .

22)   I applied for a student visa and the programme duration is 6 months. However, I notice that the validity period of my Visa Grant Notice is 3 months. Does it mean that I can only stay in Korea for 3 months?

      ▷ Validity of visa and duration of stay allowed are different entities. Visa is valid for 3 months once issued. This means that you will need to enter Korea within 3 months of its issuance or else the visa will lapsed. On the other hand, the period of stay listed on the Visa Grant Notice is the duration of stay allowed. The period of stay will start to count from the date of entry.

23) Is visa required for transit at Incheon Airport?

       ▷ In general, visa is not required if you are not required to clear the immigration at Incheon Airport during the transit. You should consult with your airlines on whether immigration clearance is required or if you may remain at the transit area to connect to your next flight.

24) I will be taking a direct flight from a 3rd country to Jeju Island without stopping over at other parts of Korea. Can I do so without a visa / K-ETA?

(3) Passport requirement, APEC Business Travel Card

1) My passport has less than 6 months remainder validity during entry into Korea. Would this be an issue?

     ▷ You may enter Korea with a passport that has less than 6 months remainder validity as long as your passport remains valid throughout your stay. 2) I hold a valid APEC card. Do I still need to apply for visa/K-ETA to enter Korea for toursim/business?

    ▷ APEC card holders may enter Korea without visa or K-ETA .

3) I am a Korean national living/working in Singapore and I would like to apply for APEC card.

(4) COVID-19

1) What would be the COVID-19 vaccination requirement for entry into Korea?

    ▷ Vaccination is not a requirement for entry into Korea.

2) How far in advance should I register for Q-Code?

     ▷ Registration of Q-code is no longer required.

3) Is travel insurance required?

      ▷ Purchase of travel insurance would be your personal choice.

4) Am I required to take an on-arrival PCR test in Korea?

    ▷ The on-arrival PCR test requirement will be lifted from 01 October 2022 onwards.
