Catholic Holy Land Tour Adventure - visit the Holy Sepulchre and other wonders

Find Out Everything You Need to Go on a Spiritual Trip to the Holy Land

Did you ever dream of walking in the footsteps of Jesus Christ? There is nothing better than seeing the sites from the Old and New Testament with your own eyes. A Holy Land tour may be the perfect way to do so.  Going on a Holy Land tour with a local, professional guide that has dedicated her/his life to learning about the Holy Land can be a great way to learn more and make the most out of your visit to Israel. Though this can be done on a private basis, you can also organize your own group and go on this journey with your own spiritual community.

To help you start planning, we’ve made a list of the top 10 tips you must know before visiting.

1. What are the Must See Sites in the Holy Land?

There are so many significant sites to visit during your tour to Israel. With so many options, it can get pretty difficult to choose, but don’t worry – we’ve made a list of 11 sites you must visit.

Nazareth and the Church of Annunciation is an important place to Christians from different denominations and should not be missed, as Jesus of Nazareth spent a lot of time in this area.

Cana is famous as it is the place where the miracle of Jesus turning water into wine took place. Additionally, it is home to the popular “Wedding Church” where many happy couples renew their vows to this day.

Magdala is the place where Mary Magdalene was born. It is now possible to visit the remains of the ancient city and feel what it was like to live during Jesus’s time.

Mt. Beatitudes , where Jesus gave the “Sermon on the Mount”, also offers a beautiful view of the area. Look around and enjoy the view Jesus saw with his own eyes when giving the sermon!

Mt. Tabor , on the top of this beautiful mountain, is The Church of Transfiguration. It was built in honor of the transfiguration of Jesus himself, which according to tradition, took place right there.

Jericho is perhaps the oldest city in the world, located in the scenic Judean Desert. This is the place where the devil attempted to tempt Jesus Christ. Don’t miss the opportunity to ascend Mt. Temptation and witness it with your own eyes.

Bethlehem is a must. The Church of Nativity located at Manger Square is said to be built right where Jesus was born.

Mt. Olives is a cemetery that once was covered in olive groves. Now, it overlooks the Old City of Jerusalem and offer a breath-taking panoramic view of the city.

The Garden of Gethsemane is the very place where Jesus prayed and his disciples slept the night before his crucifixion.

Via Dolorosa , the Stations of the Cross, is where you will literally walk in the footsteps of Jesus. Make your way past the very places Jesus saw on his way to the cross.

Church of the Holy Sepulcher , where Jesus was crucified, is another site to visit when in Jerusalem.

2. What Hotels are Best Suited for Pilgrims?

No tour can be complete without the right accommodation. Choosing the right hotels is a crucial part of any tour and can add a lot to the experience.

So what would our team recommend? There are many good accommodation options to choose from. If you would like to stay at traditional hotels, check out our post about hotel classes in Israel . If you would like a more authentic pilgrimage experience, these are our top 3 choices:

Magdala Guesthouse

The Magdala Guesthouse is located in beautiful Magdala and offers a pleasant home to any pilgrim.

Mt. Beatitudes Guesthouse

Clean, calm and full of kindness – this is a lovely way of experiencing the Galilee.

Notre Dame of Jerusalem

What better way is there to experience a historical city than to stay at a historical building? Notre Dame of Jerusalem has been welcoming guests since the end of the 19th century. Many pilgrims enjoyed the guesthouse’s hospitality and its excellent location, right next to the Old City’s walls and the New Gate.

3. How to Decide on your Group’s Size

We offer both Private Holy Land Tours for small group and individuals, as well as an option to organize a group and visit with your church and community. A private tour option is most recommended for couples and families, as it gives more flexibility when choosing sites to visit and determining a certain pace. Bigger groups, on the other hand, though less flexible, are often very meaningful for the participants. It lets a community unite in a beautiful, mutual experience, which is different than the regular routine at home.

Once you decide which option suits you best, simply contact our team and one of our experts would love to assist with organizing a tour for you and your loved ones.

4. Guides and Spiritual Leaders

We recommend that the group come with its own pastor/leader rather than searching for a local one. This will ensure that you will be accompanied by your own spiritual leader who resonates with you. It gives your Holy Land tour a warmer feel. Additionally, you will not need to depend on local clergyman in case you would like to have a Mass, baptize in the Jordan River or renew your vows in Cana.

5. How to Book Masses in the Holy Land

The one crucial factor to booking masses is very simple: book in advance to secure availability at your preferred churches. From our experience, masses are booked many months prior to arrival and availability becomes quite scarce as your arrival grows nearer.

Baptize at the Yardenit baptismal site at the Galilee Sea as part of your Holy Land journey.

The Galilee Sea, Israel

6. Where is the best Baptism Site?

A “literal” way of walking in the footsteps of Jesus is to baptize in the Jordan River. This is a great way of reconnecting and having a spiritual moment, though we may recommend reconsidering it in case you arrive during the cold winter…

The most popular baptism site to visit is the Yardenit , right near the Galilee Sea itself. It is a well-established site that’s been welcoming pilgrims for quite a while now. This site is considered one of the most important sites in the Galilee and we also include this in our Israel tour packages , which are suitable for all faiths. Another great option is the rising Qasr al-Yahud baptism site, located further to the South of the Jordan River, near Jericho.

If you plan to baptize in any of these sites, another important thing to keep in mind, there isn’t always a pastor available. It is best to have your own spiritual leader with you so you won’t rely on others for the ceremony.

7. Couples Activity: Renewal of Vows in Cana

One of the most meaningful moments of our lives is the day one marries a beloved partner. Sometimes, daily routine may make us forget why we decided to share our lives together. A great way to remind ourselves of the reasons is to renew the vows we took all those years ago. And what better time is there to do this than right now, in the Holy Land, where Jesus walked?

We are always thrilled to help our guests renew their vows at the Wedding Church in Cana. If you do not have a pastor travelling with you, we recommend booking this in advance, in order to secure avaialbiltiy for a clergyman. Let us know your preference and our team will handle the booking. Happy renewal!

8. How to book your Christmas Holy Land Tour

Christmas is one of the most popular times for pilgrims to visit. Going on a Holy Land tour during this time is definitely an unforgettable experience. Christmas trees are being lit in Nazareth, Jerusalem and of course, Bethlehem, Jesus’s birthplace. What better way to celebrate Jesus’s birth than to visit the very place he was born?

Many of our travellers find this a meaningful experience, whether they go on a private tour or join one of our Israel Chritmas tour packages – now available for 2020-2021 !

9. What to Know when Visiting during “Holy Week”?

Visits during Easter has its benefits and draw-backs. Visiting the holy sites during a holiday is certainly a unique experience. A big bonus is that the weather during Spring in Israel is usually perfect for travelling at this time: warm, but not too hot.

As Easter usually falls at the same time as Passover, a national Jewish holiday, the Holy Week is is a very busy time to visit Israel. Pilgrims and Jews love to visit during this time. Many sieze the opportunity to enjoy the nice weather so holy sites and nature reserves alike tend to be very crowded. Additionally, due to the large amounts of visitors, some churches may be closed for visitors.

10. Should You Take Pictures of you and your community, or Focus on Sites?

In today’s world, taking pictures is becoming a norm of everyday life. We recommend making your pictures personal: rather than taking pictures of a location that have been photographed time and time again, make sure to have your picture with loved ones taken there. This will transform the picture into a precious memory you’d love to look at when you’re back home.

11. Don’t Go Home Empty Handed! Pilgrimage Certificates through Noah Tours

We’d love you to take home some great memories from your Holy Land tour and what better way than a souvenir? Noah Tours arranges for a pilgrimage certificate for all of our pilgrim groups.

Any questions? Don’t be shy! Our team would be more than happy to speak with you. Contact us here for further information regarding Holy Land tours.

To go on pilgrimage is not simply to visit a place to admire its treasures of nature, art or history. To go on pilgrimage really means to step out of ourselves in order to encounter God where he has revealed himself, where his grace has shone with particular splendor and produced rich fruits of conversion and holiness among those who believe. Above all, Christians go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land, to the places associated with the Lord’s passion, death, and resurrection.

Fr. Dan Dashner

Each day, early in the morning on this Holy Land Pilgrimage we were off and running. The driver of the van was a very safe and considerate driver who not only ensured that we arrived at all our assigned destinations on time, but he also ensured that there was plenty of water for all of us to drink as the weather was very hot and we needed to constantly hydrate our bodies. All Holy Site visits were well-planned, and our tour guide was well known by the guards and site coordinators and several occasions we were even granted head of line privileges.

Every day of our journey was fruitful and fulfilling and we were given the opportunity to visit and spend ample time at each site identified in the Catholic Journey Pilgrimage Brochure. In fact, we even visited some sites that were not scheduled and not offered in the itinerary. Confession and spiritual direction were announced as available and was provided as requested and the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was celebrated each day with the group. Every morning, on the tour motor coach, I led a recitation of The Holy Rosary or the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Everybody joined in and I’m sure that our pilgrimage was blessed and especially protected by the Blessed Virgin Mother of God because during this pilgrimage, I was hit from behind by an electric motor bike. However, I was not seriously hurt and there were no injuries to the operator of the electric motor bike.

On the last day of the pilgrimage to Jerusalem, we went to the Via Dolorosa, and I led stations of the cross all the way to Golgotha where I was privileged to offer the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass.

This Holy Land Pilgrimage was a dream come true for me because when I was ordained to the presbyterate, I was scheduled to go to the Holy Land This trip was on my bucket list of things I wanted to do and an answer to my prayer. Due to our very close group interaction and relationships, we developed with each other, we now have new spiritual families (members of our pilgrimage group). Each of the nine members of our group have called or texted me and each other and assured us of their prayers & support.

Words cannot express my gratitude to Catholic Journeys for giving me this great opportunity to go on pilgrimage to the Holy Land as group Spiritual Director. I commend Catholic Journeys for hiring knowledgeable guides and skilled driver for these pilgrimages. May God continue to Bless & Protect You and All Pilgrims that make this Extraordinary Journey to the Holy Land through Catholic Journeys.

Reverend Father Daniel L. Dashner,

Patrick and Linda

We went on pilgrimage to the Holy Land on 9/17 and returned 9/26. We celebrated our 30th Anniversary first by renewing our vows in Cana and spending last full day on our actual Anniversary with a special Mass at Golgotha and a visit to the Tomb.

Our guide was an extraordinary mix of historian, geography, religion and Shepherd! He kept us all safe and taken care of whatever we needed.

Our Priest, Father Dan, is now the head of our Pilgrimage Family and we are grateful to God and everyone at Catholic Journeys for making this possible!

The pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land was wonderful and David, our guide, was fantastic. I was amazed at his knowledge and wish I could have recorded the entire trip. Unfortunately I became ill on the flight over so wasn’t able to fully enjoy trip. Sadly I have been diagnosed with cancer and would appreciate prayers. My roommate was also wonderful to me. Please add me to your prayer list. ✝️🙏🙏🙏🙏

Margaret and Richard

Our pilgrimage to the Holy Land was amazing. Everything was perfect from the time we were picked up at the airport until the day we departed. We had the best tour guide David. I felt blessed each day by his vast amount of knowledge. We were able to gain access to the most beautiful basilicas and had Mass each day. I felt very cared for and safe the entire pilgrimage. I would recommend Catholic Journey to everyone who is considering a pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

The pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land was awesome despite the heat. Our guide was a wealth of knowledge. David, our tour guide was so passionate about his country and so willing to share his knowledge.

I had a fabulous trip to Israel going on the Roots of Your Faith tour. Life changing and so amazing. Yeshay, also known as Jessie, my tour guide, was so knowledgeable, organized, funny, and kind. He was very attentive to everyone on the tour. I learned so much from him about life in Israel, its people, culture, and most importantly all of the significant biblical history at each holy site we visited. Aaron, our driver, was charming, jovial, and professional to make sure he got everyone to each destination with ease. The hotel accommodations were lovely with wonderful food, shout out to all the great chefs, and pleasant hotel staff. Thank you AIT!

Roots of Your Faith Oct 2022

An AMAZING experience from start to finish with AIT! I booked the Roots of our Faith tour to travel with my Father since Israel was on the top of his list to see in life. It turned out to be the most memorable trip of our lives for both of us!! Our tour guide Barak Berkovich was beyond phenomenal!! We are so incredibly fortunate to have had a guide so unbelievably knowledgeable, with a great sense of humor, along with possessing the rare ability to make us feel safe and secure the entire time! I have traveled extensively around the world, taking many tours, and I have never had a better guide than Barak! He was absolutely captivating (even after our 8-10 hour days of sightseeing) he kept us wanting to see and hear more!! If you are considering traveling to Israel, dont wait! Call them to book today! The process was flawless. Skyler in booking took care of every detail for us, including flight suggestions that worked out perfectly. We were picked up as soon as we landed at the airport and received the red carpet treatment the remainder of the trip. The food and hotels provided were wonderful. Our fellow group travelers were some of the most loving and faithful people I've ever had the pleasure of meeting! The itinerary was everything we could have ever hoped to see and more!!! Thank you AIT for the most extraordinary pilgrimage of a lifetime!! The memories will live on for the rest of our lives!

Roots of Your Faith Nov 2022

Our tour guide, Bruce, was wonderful, very knowledgeable and helpful. Hearing about the Biblical events from a Jewish perspective was enlightening for me. This tour was a whirlwind of sights and history for a solid week, but I highly recommend it.

The trip was worth the wait after Covid. Skylar & Regan from AIT answered all questions & sent pertinent paperwork as needed to get us started on a memorable journey. The first week is the Roots tour with Jordan as an extension. Forty-one started with 18 going on to Jordan. If you get Yair as a tour guide in Israel, you are getting the best guide. Not only is he knowledgeable & very personable, but also funny making each stop memorable. Menahem, the bus driver, uses his driving skills in difficult situations. If women had short sleeve tops, a shawl was not necessary, but definitely needed for sleeveless tops. No need to change dollars which were accepted when credit cards couldn't be used. Have plenty of $1 bills especially for water which was sold everywhere. Crossing the border to Jordan for 2 extra nights was definitely worthwhile. Jerash ruins show a huge ancient city, but Petra is a true wonder of the world. There is a lot of walking, sometimes on uneven surfaces & uphill. An electric cart (for a fee) can be taken between the Visitors Center & the Treasury if you are unable to walk long distances. You can ride a horse part way which is included in the ticket price, but the handler will expect a tip. Once reaching the Treasury, a very short camel ride can be taken (about $5). Our guide Saleh was knowledgeable and answered all our questions. This trip not only enriched my faith as so many others have said, but I got to see different cultures and met a lot of great people.

Roots of Your Faith Sep 2022

Only day three of our Roots of Your Faith tour with Jordon and Egypt extension and AIT has provided service beyond expectations. As we travel the remainder of our nearly three week trip I am confident the experience will continue to be exceptional. Yair, our tour guide, is knowledgeable not only of the historic perspective but also biblically and delivers the information with clarity.

We booked our 10 Day "Roots of Your Faith " with AIT Since 2020. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, we could not travel. We finally got cleared and traveled at end of August! AIT staff especially Skyler and Raegan always communicated with us and kept us informed about everything that was happening! Words cannot express our experience because it was that amazing. Well planned and executed in all apsects. Great hotels, sightseeing opportunities and great local spots to visit. Our tour guide Yoram was very knowledgable, passionate and lead us on our journey from day 1. We got to see so many of the Holy Sights and learned so much during our trip. I would definitely recommend this company and travel with them again!

Roots of Your Faith Aug 2022

Recently returned from an AIT “Roots of Your Faith” tour with visits to both sides of the Jordan. WOW! It was amazing! Both the California and Israeli based administrative teams who planned and organized the trip did so with precision and made our way comfortable and easy. We wanted to see “everything” and we did. Yair, our tour guide in Israel, made historical sites and Biblical events come alive with his knowledge, insight and presentation; and he did so in a way that faded the hectic atmosphere of some crowded sites. Our guide in Bethlehem and Emdad in Jordan enhanced our visits as well. The accommodations and hospitality at our hotels and dining rooms was excellent, particularly in Jerusalem and in Aman. Would I go with AIT again? Absolutely, in a heartbeat!

Roots of Your Faith Oct 2019

Early November is a fabulous time to visit Israel with the wonderful AIT crew. They looked after us the whole way through. They don’t talk up the Isrotel Hotel at the Dead Sea enough. That has to be the finest hotel on the water. It’s 5 stars by any standard! The peace and the beauty of the land is surprising... from the news you’d think this place is going to kick off at any moment. Our experience has been fantastic so far. If you’ve not been to Israel... you are missing a unique corner of the world... Come to Israel!!!

Roots of Your Faith Nov 2019

We had a really amazing tour From Old Jaffa to the Old city of Jerusalem Hotel and food accommodations were great , Our tour guide Yoram was really Informative and always willing to answer questions , Our experienced Driver Moshe always made us feel safe on the road . This tour will always be memorable to my heart and I totally recommend it . Zaida Humphrey

My husband & I have been enjoying our first visit to Israel on the America Israel Tour (AIT) company's "Roots of your Faith” tour. It has been a surprise to see so many other tours operating at the same time, and of course, all wanting to visit the same sites. We believe what make our tour special is our guide: Yoram Black. He has been professional, knowledgeable, accommodating, efficient, analytical, thoughtful and courteous. We have been on other tours in other countries and Yoram seems to be the hardest working and most prepared guide we have had the pleasure of touring with. I don’t know if it is Yoram or AIT that coordinates the timing of each day, but our itinerary seems to help us avoid the worst of the crowds. The company’s “Whisper” system of communication helps us all hear every word and feel like we are next to the guide, even if we are wandering the site, and regardless of the other tours. The tour is highly recommended. Karen and Indy from Sanibel Island, FL

Day 3: Ein Karem – Temple Model – Bethelehem – Jerusalem

This morning, you will have breakfast and then depart for a day in Jerusalem, which houses the temple to which Jesus was Presented (Luke 2:22). You will start the day with a visit to the village of Ein Karem, the birthplace of John the Baptist. It is known that there are two churches in Ein Karem, both representing the two homes of Zechariah and Elizabeth. The first is in a valley where the birth of St. John the Baptist is commemorated (Luke 1:39-80) in the Church of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist. The second is on a hill where Elizabeth spent five months in seclusion (Luke 1:24) at the Church of the Visitation. Your group will visit both of these churches and have the opportunity to pray the Mystery of the Rosary as you walk up the hill to the Church of the Visitation. From there, we will make a short drive to visit a model of the Second Temple, as it was in the time of Jesus. We will stop for lunch, and then make your way to Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus. In Bethlehem, you will have the opportunity to view Shepherd’s Fields (Luke 2:8). In the caves of these fields, you are still able to see the soot marks of fires that shepherds lit to keep warm. We will stop for lunch and then continue on the tour at the Manger Square, which stands in front of the Church of the Nativity. As you enter the Church, you will proceed down to the Grotto of the Nativity, which marks the spot of Our Savior’s birth (Matthew 2:1-18). Beneath the Altar, there is a silver star and a Latin inscription that states: HIC DE VIRGINE MARIA JESUS CHRISTUS NATUS (Here Jesus Christ was born to the Virgin Mary). Following Mass in this Sacred space, your group will return to the Hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Mount Tabor – Nazareth – Cana - Jerusalem

After breakfast, we will board the bus and head to the site of the Transfiguration, Mount Tabor (Matthew 17:1-50). At this site, you will have some time to reflect on Christ’s Humanity and Divinity. Your group will also have the opportunity to celebrate Mass at the Basilica of the Transfiguration. We will stop for lunch at the famous restaurant – Tishreen (Arabic for “October”), and then your group will drive to Nazareth. Upon arrival, you will experience the town where Mary once lived and where Jesus lived as a child (Matthew 2:23). During the visit to Nazareth, your group will visit the Byzantine Church of St. Joseph, to which tradition identifies as the workshop and home of the Holy Family. Also, your group will visit Mary’s Well where the angel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she will bear the Son of God (Luke 1:30-34). Your tour continues to Cana of Galilee, where Jesus performed his first miracle changing water to wine, visit the wedding church where married couples will renew wedding vows. After, we will return to the Hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Mount of Olives – Gethsemane – Mt. Zion – St. Peter in Gallicantu - Jerusalem

Wake up and enjoy breakfast, and then make our way to the Mount of Olives, where you will be able to take in the beautiful, panoramic view of Jerusalem. Historically, the Mount of Olives was a mandatory transit point for Jesus during many iconic moments. Then start the day with a tour to Gethsemane, a garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives. Jesus brought His disciples here to pray the night before He was crucified (Luke 22:29-53). The Garden still contains trees with roots that date back to the time of Jesus. Beside the Garden is your next stop, the Church of All Nations, built over the “Rock of Agony”. This is where Jesus prayed alone on the night of His arrest. Throughout this time, you are invited to remain in prayer and to reflect on Christ’s agony that he experienced. Your group will have the opportunity to visit the Western Wall, which is the last remnant of the Jewish Temple after it was destroyed in 70 C.E. Your group will visit the Pater Noster Shrine, where Jesus taught His disciples the Lord’s Prayer (Pater Noster) (Luke 11:1-4). You will have the opportunity to stop at Dominus Flevit, which is a Church that commemorates where Jesus wept for Jerusalem (Luke 19:41). and then visit the Upper Room on Mt. Zion. The Upper Room is where Jesus and His disciples celebrated the Last Supper (Matthew 26:17-30) and, where Jesus appeared to His disciples after His Death and Resurrection (Mark 16:14). In addition, your group will visit the nearby Benedictine Church of the Dormition. Tradition tells us that this Church is where Mary, the Mother of Jesus, “fell asleep.” The tour continues as you will visit the house of the High Priest Caiaphas (Church of St. Peter in Gallicantu). This Church commemorates where Jesus was examined and eventually imprisoned before the Council in Jerusalem. It also commemorates Peter’s Denial of Christ (John 18:15-18), Peters’ repentance, and Jesus’ forgiveness of Peter. Return to the Hotel in time to freshen up before we make our way to dinner at the popular restaurant – Satya – fronted by famous Chef Ilan Grossi (of the popular Chakra Restaurant). The menu has Mediterranean influences, with a variety of meat, fish, and seafood dishes. Return to the Hotel for a restful night’s sleep.

Day 6: Jerusalem – Tiberias: Sea of Galilee – Tabgha – Mount of Beatitudes – Capernaum - Jerusalem

Your group will begin this day with breakfast at the hotel, and then board your bus and make your way towards Tiberias. Upon arrival, you will enjoy a boat ride on the beautiful and scenic, Sea of Galilee (Luke 5:1). During this ride, your group will also view the remains of a boat that dates back to the time of Jesus. Following the Sea of Galilee, we Near the Mount, is Tabgha, one of Jesus’ miracle sites. At Tabgha, Jesus fed the crowd of 5,000 people from five loaves of bread and two fish (Luke 9:10-17). Also, in Tabgha is St. Peter’s Primacy where Jesus bestowed church leadership upon Peter (John 21:9). From there we will stop for lunch and then continue to the Mount of Beatitudes, where Jesus proclaimed His great Sermon on the Mount (Luke 6:20-49). Then we will visit the birthplace of Mary Magdalene in Magdala. During the time of Jesus, this village was a prosperous fishing village that exported fish and garum (a fish sauce reduction; popular in Roman cooking). Your day concludes at Capernaum, the launching place of Jesus’ ministry. In Capernaum, see the Synagogue where Jesus taught (Mark 1:21-29) and gave His sermon on the Bread of Life. Return to the Hotel where your group will enjoy dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Jerusalem: Via Dolorosa – Church of the Holy Sepulchre – Old City Tour of Christian Quarters – Church of St. Anne – Pool of Bethesda

Your group will have a very early morning wake-up, which will begin the Via Dolorosa (The Way of the Cross) at the Antonia Fortress. This is the spot where Jesus was condemned to death by Pontius Pilate (John 18:28-19:16). Following His condemnation, He was taken (on the Road to Calvary) to His place of Crucifixion. Your group will reflect upon the Stations of the Cross as you travel through the markets of the Old City to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher (Luke 23:26-33). This Sacred destination is the site of Calvary (Jesus’ crucifixion place) and, His tomb (Luke 23: 50-55). Your group will celebrate Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Following Mass, your group will return to the Hotel to enjoy a late breakfast. The tour continues through the Christian Quarters, and then a visit to the Church of St. Anne’s, the home of Jesus’ maternal grandparents (Anne and Joachim); and the Pool of Bethesda, where Jesus healed the crippled man (John 5:1-9). Return to the Hotel where we will have some free time before dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Western Wall and Jewish Quarters - Jericho – Jordan River - Qumran - Dead Sea

Gather for breakfast, and then board your bus to visit the Western Wall, which is the last remnant of the Jewish Temple after it was destroyed in 70 C.E. From there, we will tour the Jewish Quarters, before we break for lunch. After, we will board our bus and begin our journey south towards the Jordan Valley, to the oldest inhabited city in the world, Jericho (Joshua 6:12-25). In Jericho, you view the exact location, the Mount of Temptation, where the Devil tempted Jesus during his forty-day fast (Luke 4:1). Following the visit to this mountain, continue to Jesus’ baptismal site on the River Jordan (Matthew 3:13-17). After some time at the Jordan River, you will travel down the Jordan Valley to Qumran. Qumran is made up of 2,000-year-old ruins from the days of the Second Temple and also the site where the Dead Sea Scrolls were written and discovered (Ezekial 47:8-10). These writings have helped further the understanding of Jewish background in Christianity. Time and weather permitting, you will have the opportunity to take a float in the Dead Sea, the lowest and saltiest spot on Earth. Continue as you travel through the Judean wilderness, the site where Jesus spent His 40 days of fasting. Return to your Hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 9: Jerusalem – Caesarea – Emmaus - Jerusalem

This morning, you will have breakfast, and head to Caesarea, the former capital of Judea. You will have the opportunity to visit the archaeological remains of this ancient port, which aided as a base for the Herodian navy. Shortly after the time of Jesus Christ, it was revealed to Peter, in Caesarea, that the Good News (to repent) is not only intended for Jewish people but also, the entire world. This is also the place that officially ended the tradition of adhering to the Jewish ceremonial laws. As a result, Peter baptized a group of gentiles, the Roman Centurion, Cornelius, and his family. From here, we will see the Roman Theater, Herod’s Palace, view the Hippodrome, and the harbor from where St. Paul sailed on his journeys. From there, we will visit the site of Emmaus, the town mentioned in the Gospel of Luke from the New Testament, where Luke reports that Jesus appeared after his death and resurrection. Return to the Hotel for some time to refresh before we make our way to the famous Rooftop Bar “Wine and Cheese” located on the top of Notre Dame. Is it here, at this Vatican owned property – we will celebrate our Farewell Dinner before returning to our hotel for overnight.

Day 10: Return Flights Home

After an early breakfast and heartfelt farewells, transfer to the Tel Aviv airport for return flights home.

What Sites Should Be on Your Holy Land Tour Itinerary?

What sites should be on your holy land itinerary

You’ve decided to start planning for a Holy Land Tour. You’re looking at different tour groups, their leaders, and their itineraries. They look the same, with a few differences here and there. You can’t decide because you want to know what sites should be on your Holy Land Tour itinerary.

What sites should be on a Holy Land tour itinerary?

  • In Galilee : Nazareth, Capernaum, the Sea of Galilee, Tagbha, and the Mount of Beatitudes.
  • In Jerusalem : the Temple Mount, the Israel Museum, the Garden of Gethsemane, the Mount of Olives, the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, The Western Wall, the Western Wall tunnels, the Southern Steps, the Via Dolorosa, and the Garden Tomb.
  • Around Jerusalem : Bethlehem and the Judean Wilderness.
  • In the Rift Valley ; Jericho, the Dead Sea, Masada, Qumran, and the Jordan River.

This is a long list. For a ten-day excursion, it’s almost too long, but it can be done. The problem with this list is that it barely touches the surface of what the Holy Land has to offer. But it covers most of the important sites in Jesus’s ministry and the period in which he lived.

Note: All Bible verse links go to biblegateway.com

Before I begin, let’s talk about the concept of tradition . In the Old Testament, Moses routinely marks places where God interacted with His people. Often, he built a stone pile that contrasted the landscape. They were tangible reminders of spiritual events.

Though the tradition of placing a pile of rocks seems to have died with him, establishing a tradition of commemoration did not. Throughout history, both Jews and Christians have sought to commemorate significant events in the relationship between God and His people.  Because communities and cultures rise and fall, sometimes these locations are forgotten. Or tribal knowledge inadvertently shifts the location where an event happened. Or commemoration was delayed because of political and cultural influences.

These questions don’t mean that tradition in the absence of definitive knowledge weakens the significance of an event. We must remember that the location is just a tangible reminder of the event. We visit the Holy Land to immerse ourselves in the place where God interacted with His people. And where His Son, Jesus, walked among His people.

During your tour, you will come across many archaeological digs which provide evidence of biblical places. You will also visit numerous sites that lay claim to the same event.

There are TWO Gardens of Gethsemane!! There are between TWO and FIVE sites, which claim to be the location where Jesus was born.  Archaeologists have argued for decades over where Golgotha is.

The thing to remember is that competing claims do not lead to a flimsy argument for the existence of God. All these sites have strong arguments in favor of their claims. The arguments have never been over the legitimacy of the events. Rather, they have been over where the pile of rocks should be placed.

Almost every Holy Land tour hits Galilee first. It’s too important for Christians to miss, so it’s usually front-loaded in case scheduling problems arise.

Galilee is important because the majority of Jesus’s ministry happened here. Almost every site you’ll visit has had a church or some kind of worship center built on it. You may feel robbed of an authentic experience because of this. Just think of it as the modern-day version of a pile of rocks.

Nazareth is a thriving city, so there isn’t much to see historically. However, the Church of the Annunciation is where you will most likely go. It’s a beautiful structure, both inside and outside. The church sits on top of the plot of land in which tradition believes the angel Gabriel informed Mary she would give birth to Jesus.

Just to the north of Nazareth is Kanna , better known in the Bible as Cana. John 2 tells the story of Jesus’s first miracle, the turning of water into wine, during a wedding feast at Cana. The Wedding Church in Kanna is the usual tourist stop.

Mount Precipice is on the south side of Nazareth and offers a fantastic view of the Jezreel Valley. Luke 4:29-30 tells the story of when the people of Nazareth seek to throw Jesus from “the brow of the hill on which the town was built.” But he passes through them and disappears. Mount Precipice is the traditional site of this event.

There is no hiking required as the parking lot is right next to the lookout. This is an easy site to visit and can offer a serene atmosphere for an early morning prayer service.

What you will probably miss in Galilee.

The Wedding Church at Cana is nice. But to the northeast of the town of Kanna is something far more interesting. A mound that archaeologists think is the first-century location of Cana sits hidden in the small hills. Ostraca and shards of pottery bearing the name of the city have been found there. Once funding is obtained and approval granted, biblical historians and archaeologists will descend on the site to excavate it.

The site is difficult to get to at the moment. It is off the beaten path and requires a mile hike along a dirt road through some farmland. The road eventually ends, and you’ll have to make your own path to the top of the mound.

Cana

There’s nothing of particular importance on top, but you can say you possibly visited the ‘real’ Cana .

Sepphoris was a town near Nazareth and the capital of the Galilee region in Jesus’s time. Under Herod, the city underwent a good amount of construction going. Although not mentioned in the Bible, Sepphoris is a place of interest because of its first-century building projects.

Biblical historians have suggested that Joseph might have worked there as a carpenter. He may have even taken Jesus with him to learn how to build.

The archaeological remains at Sepphoris have been well preserved and offer great insight into life in the first century.

The Sea of Galilee.

Otherwise known as Lake Gennesaret, the Sea of Galilee is home to several important sites.

If your group takes a boat ride on the sea , you’ve chosen wisely. If you’re lucky, you’ll get dropped off in Tiberias next to the Jesus Boat Museum . Inside, the preserved hull of a first-century fishing boat is on display. The boat was found encased in mud off the nearby shore of the lake in the mid-1980s. It will give you an idea of the boats Jesus and the Disciples sailed in.

To the north, Capernaum was the home of Peter and the headquarters of sorts for Jesus’s ministry. At the site, you’ll find a fourth-century synagogue and the ruins of some first-century housing structures. One of the homes is believed to have been Peter’s.

Above the ruins is a church built as a memorial to Peter. Pews are situated around the outside of the sanctuary. The center of the sanctuary floor is glass so that visitors can see the ruins below.

Tabgha is the traditional site of the feeding of the Five-thousand ( Matt 14 ; Mark 6 ; Luke 9 ; and John 6 ). Nothing exists in terms of ruins because the event took place in a field. However, today the Church of the Multiplication stands as a memorial to the event.

The Sermon on the Mount ( Matt 5-7 ) is one of the most famous passages in the Bible. It also occurred on an undeveloped plot of land. Tradition and the Bible, place it on the slopes of the Chorazin Plateau overlooking Tabgha and Capernaum. A Roman Catholic church has adorned the landscape of the plateau since the 1930s.

If you chose a good tour group, you will walk along a trail leading away from the Mount of Beatitudes Church down to Tabgha.

What you’ll probably miss at the Sea of Galilee.

To the west of Tabgha is a site that was discovered more recently than the ones above. The name of the town was Magdala . The town of Mary Magdalene, or rather Mary of Magdala. The site is small, but archaeologists have been working on it fervently. A worship center has been built at the site to memorialize the women of the Bible.

The list of Christian holy and historical sites in Jerusalem is vast. However, the majority are situated in and around the Old City. Because of this, your time in Jerusalem will be spent walking a lot. So be prepared.

  • Israel Museum . Don’t miss the model of the Old City.
  • Mount of Olives. Your tour bus will take you there. But if you can hike up for a sunrise alone or with your spouse, you’ll thank me.
  • Kidron Valley. Stay with your group!
  • Church of All Nations (Garden of Gethsemene)
  • Dominus Flavit. Traditional site where Jesus wept.
  • Western Wall
  • Western Wall Tunnels. Fascinating. You’ll see part of a first-century sidewalk and stones the size of half a football field.
  • Temple Mount. A must-see.
  • Via Dolorosa. It can be cliché to carry the cross through the stations of the cross. But if that’s on your list, own it and never look back.
  • The old City Market. Check out Zak’s for some decent antiquities.
  • The Garden Tomb. Probably not THE tomb, but it provides a great look at how first-century tombs looked.
  • The Upper Room. The traditional site where Jesus and the disciples had the last supper. ‘Traditional’ is the operative word here.
  • The Southern Steps. Here you’ll find pieces of the original temple wall and some original mikvahs.
  • Church of the Holy Sepulcher. A church built over the traditional site of the tomb Jesus was placed in. Get in line to see the stone bench. Stay for the door ceremony at the end of the day.
  • Church of Saint Anne. Located next to the pools of Bethesda, the Via Dolorosa starts here.
  • Mount Scopus Lookout. Another lookout of the Temple Mount from the North East.

What you will probably miss in Jerusalem.

The City of David archaeological dig ( Official Website ) is something relatively new. At least in the last decade. For centuries the site was covered by houses. As land opened up, archaeologists have been able to dig and uncover parts of the original city from the time of David. The dig is across the street from the Southern Steps.

One of the fascinating finds was the original city wall about halfway up the slope from the Kidron Valley. Even more fascinating is another wall just a little higher up than the main wall. Archaeologists have determined this to be Nehemiah’s Wall .

In the book of his namesake, Nehemiah leads a building campaign to rebuild the wall. The Israelites accomplish the feat in 56 days. Though the book does not say how they built it so fast, because the wall was higher up, its perimeter is shorter.

Hezekiah’s Tunnel ( 2 Kings 20 ). When the Assyrians invaded Jerusalem in 701 BCE, King Hezekiah had a tunnel carved that lead from the Gihon Spring to the Pool of Siloam. Known as Hezekiah’s Tunnel, tourists can walk through it from the City of David to the pool. If the tunnel is on your itinerary, wear sandals or shoes you don’t mind getting wet. And be prepared for a few tight spaces.

Around Jerusalem.

One site I recommend you put on your ‘must-see, no compromises’ list is the Judean Wilderness . There are a couple of lookout points that are frequented by tourists. It doesn’t matter which one you choose. What you’ll see is miles and miles of untamed wilderness. The exact same wilderness Abraham, David, and Jesus saw.

Some tours skip the lookout points because they can be a bit of a detour. If it’s not on your itinerary and you have a day off in Jerusalem, I recommend finding a way to get out there. The lookouts aren’t far. The whole trip might take an hour or two at most. Your quiet time with God will thank you.

Bethlehem is a bit of a dump these days, but it’s a must-see for any Holy Land tour. You’ll stop at the Church of the Nativity and the Shepherds Field . Both have some kind of claim as the birthplace of Jesus. Beware of the so-called ‘tour guides’ that will bombard you at the Church of the Nativity. They aren’t tour guides, nor is the price worth it.

What you’ll probably miss around Jerusalem.

The Herodian is a palace complex built into a hill. Although Herod was a horrible person, one of the things he did was commission several epic engineering projects. The Temple rebuild was one; another was the port at Caesarea. For the Herodian, his engineers carved out the center of a hill and constructed a fortified compound inside.

Herod knew he was not liked. So, he built several fortified palace compounds where he could escape to during a revolt. The Herodian is replete with all the amenities a rich ruler could want. Including a small theater so he could entertain his Roman guests.

The Rift valley.

The journey east can often be accomplished in a day if done right. The sites you’ll visit are the 1) dig site at Jericho, 2) Qumran, 3) the Dead Sea, and 4) Masada.

Also known as Tell es-Sultan, Archaeologists first dug the ancient city of Jericho up in the 1800s. In the 1950s, Kathleen Kenyon uncovered a great amount of detail, including the Tower of Jericho.

Qumran is where the Dead Sea Scrolls were unearthed in 1948. To date, ten caves have been discovered. The Essenes were a monastic culture that lived and worked at Qumran. They maintained strict rules making new copies of scrolls and properly disposing of old ones.

The Dead Sea needs no introduction. Every tour stops at one of the many tourist swimming spots. Make sure to have your suit and your sandals ready to go. Most places will have gift shops where you can buy Dead Sea mineral lotions as well.

Masada is a mountain fortress built by Herod’s engineers for him. The compound sits on top of a mesa overlooking the Dead Sea. The engineers designed it to be self-sustaining. An intricate labyrinth of gutters and cisterns replenish and hold water year-round. It even had fields for growing crops and tending to farm animals. In 73 CE, a small band of Jewish rebels led by Josephus barricaded themselves on top.

For nine months, the Tenth Roman Legion laid siege to Masada. Jewish slaves built a ramp to the top. Twigs, branches, and grass matting were used to create stabilizing layers as dirt piled up. The weaved vegetation gave structure to the ramp and made it sturdy. The ramp still exists today. If the bus drops you off on the west side of the park, you get to walk up the ramp!

What you’ll probably miss in the Rift Valley.

Ein Gedi ( 1 Samuel 24 ) is where David and his band of marauders hid from Saul. We don’t know which cave David hid from Saul in. Today, there is a tourist stop where travelers and city dwellers can cool off in the natural springs. A trail leads from the main pools into a ravine. It’s a short little hike and can give you a great idea for how David and his men possibly lived during exile.

Final Thoughts.

The list above is not exhaustive by any means. And I didn’t even get to Southern Israel or Samaria. Both areas have interesting and significant sites you should see someday.

It’s probably a good idea for you to set some expectations for your tour right now.

If you think this is all you’re going to get, focus on the experience over the site list. Make sure you get a good group leader and group. Any tour with a good leader will make sure you hit the good sites.

The desire to go on a tour of the Holy Land is a great desire to have. Whether this trip will be your only trip or the first or one of many, God has you on the right path. Like the debates about where the pile of rocks should go, you don’t need a hard point to interact with God. he will meet you wherever and whenever He wants. He may even wait until you’re home to have that interaction.

Early breakfast and start the day with a drive drive south towards the Dead Sea. Start to descend to the lowest point on earth at 1305 feet (398m) below sea level, as the drive gets closer to the shores of the Dead Sea. Visits around the Dead Sea region will include:

Ascend by cable car to the legendary mountaintop plateau of Masada to see where the Jewish Zealots struggled against the Romans. The Zealots held out for three years against the legions of Flavius Silva. They chose to die as free men at their own hands in preference to Roman slavery and torture.

Where the Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered by a young shepherd boy.

Enjoy a float at the unsinkable shores of the Dead Sea and use the natural mud to cover your body in mud (weather permitting). The Dead Sea is uniquely formulated in a small body of water (similar to a lake) and includes 11%-13% salt and other natural ingredients.

17-Day Trip

Our Holy Land Trips are open to anyone worldwide with a valid passport for travel to Israel .

Would you like to have a life-changing and never-to-be-forgotten experience? If so, it is our joy to invite you to join us on a trip of a lifetime to the Land of the Bible, where you will find a new dimension in understanding the Bible and the life of Jesus. We will take a boat ride on the Sea of Galilee, visit places where Jesus walked, lived, taught, performed miracles, walked on the water, calmed the sea, and where He was crucified and raised from the dead. We will immerse ourselves in the Land of the Bible and experience it to the depths of our souls. You will never be the same or read your Bible the same after a trip like this.

If it's Bible you want, then this trip is for you. At each site, we will give biblical and historical teaching along with a faith lesson. Therefore, this trip is designed to provide an in-depth study and perspective from the Scriptures of the events and places of the Bible.

THIS IS A CUSTOM-DESIGNED TRIP

If you want to spend more time in Israel and see more holy sites, then this trip is designed for you. Most trips to the Holy Land allow only around 7-8 full days in Israel. This severely limits what can be seen. Therefore, most who go to the Holy Land miss out on many significant holy sites as a result. This trip will have you in Israel for 13  full touring  days. You will, therefore, see almost  everything significant there is to see in Israel.

A 17-day trip like this normally is quite expensive (if you can find one). Why can we do it so inexpensively? Because we are eliminating tour companies, travel agencies, tour guides, etc., and are providing these services instead. We are also allowing you to book your own airfare, lodging, and some of your meals. And lastly, we are staying in nice, clean hotels /hostels instead of expensive hotels.  It is our pleasure to serve you and our Lord Jesus Christ in offering you this special and affordable trip of a lifetime.

Because this is a custom trip, each participant will be required to book their own airfare, lodging, and purchase some of their own meals.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This trip is not for the weak and faint of heart! There will be a fair amount of walking, some hiking, climbing stairs, times when it could be warm (Dead Sea area), etc. Those considering this trip need to be in good shape and able to withstand some discomfort at times due to heat, walking, stairs, steps, hiking, etc. Our estimated walking distance will be about 3   - 5 miles (4 - 7 km.) a day. Those considering this trip need to be prepared for a rewarding but full schedule of about 8 - 9 hours a day. However, if at any time you want to take time off for rest during the trip, you are welcome to do so.

GROUP SIZE LIMIT

In order to have a more intimate and better experience, we limit our group size to around  35 - 40  people.  This allows us to be more efficient and see more places in Israel. Larger teams bring a different dynamic that slows things down and makes travel more difficult.

Each person will be responsible for booking their own air travel to Israel (to and from Ben Gurion Airport). Please make plans to arrive with plenty of time to attend our required  orientation and get-acquainted meeting at 7:00 pm at our Kfar Maccabiah Hotel & Suites in Tel Aviv. Due to customs and obtaining visas, please allow 3 hours from airport arrival to hotel arrival. The hotel is about 15 minutes from the airport, depending on traffic.

Note: For those having the time and resources, arriving a day early will give you a chance to rest up and get better prepared for your experience in Israel.

TRANSPORTATION IN ISRAEL

We will be transported via a large, air-conditioned motorcoach . Our bus driver is an Arab Christian who is able to take us to all sites in Israel, even in the West Bank.

LODGING IN ISRAEL

We will be staying at hotels with private rooms and bathrooms during our time in Israel. Our itinerary shows the hotels where we will stay (a total of three: Tel Aviv, Tiberias, and Jerusalem). Click here for hotel reservation links

LUGGAGE SIZE AND AMOUNT

We don't have a luggage size and number allowance per person, but we suggest not exceeding over 40-50 lbs (18-22 kg) per piece of luggage as it makes it hard to handle. The lighter, the better. You will be responsible for handling your own luggage on the trip, so don't pack any heavier than what you can lift.

MEALS IN ISRAEL

Each person will be responsible for paying for their own lunches and dinners.

Breakfast  - The hotels will provide breakfast if desired. Some will provide dinners as well. These can be paid for when you book your lodging or at the hotels.  It's ideal to eat breakfast at the hotels as it's handy. However, you can eat your breakfast if desired at a local restaurant or made by hand.

Lunch  - Because eating out is expensive in Israel, time-consuming with a large group, and we will not always be close to a restaurant, each trip participant will prepare themself a daily sack lunch. Each day around noon, we will take a break to eat, or you can eat and snack as you wish. Lunch items can be purchased at local grocery stores or extra items from the breakfasts buffets at the hotels can be taken (the hotels seem okay with this). The hotels will have refrigerators in the rooms if needed.

Dinner  – On your own. Enjoy the local culture as you eat at local restaurants or the hotel if you prefer.

PARK & ENTRANCE PASSES

Holy Land Site Ministries will pay for all park and entrance fees to all sites. You will be responsible for paying for any entrance fees you want to see during your free time.

WHAT WILL OUR VISITS TO EACH SITE BE LIKE?

Our visits will normally last around two hours. We will begin with some orientation of the site. Then we'll do a walking tour to see the site and its points of interest. Afterward, we'll find a quiet spot to reflect on the main events from the Bible that happened at the site and close with a faith lesson to learn the key truths God would desire to teach us. Some of the Bible teachings might be filmed for publishing on our website. We'll then end our visit with some free time.

A valid U.S. Passport is required. Passports must have at least six months left before they expire for travel to Israel.

TRIP PREPARATION

Please utilize the videos and info on our website that provide help and orientation to better understand many of the biblical sites we will be visiting, the history of Israel, and other helpful info. In addition, we will provide helpful info leading up to our trip that will help prepare you to get the most out of your holy land experience.

We also ask that you acquaint yourself with our Travel Orientation Material found on our website. You will find it extremely helpful.

TIME OF YEAR FOR THIS TRIP

We’ve chosen these dates to visit Israel because the weather is stable, the days are longer, and there are no Jewish Holidays that will interfere with our travels.

DAILY ITINERARY

Please take into consideration that there might be slight adjustments to the schedule depending on things out of our control. Additionally, if the team would like some flexibility in seeing sights, we are happy to do this if possible.

MONEY IN ISRAEL

Credit cards and Dollars are readily accepted, and Shekels can be drawn from ATMs.

INTERNET IN ISRAEL

Phone SIM cards can be purchased for around $39.99 if you want Internet service at all times while in Israel. You can also activate your phone for international service.

If you don't have Internet via your phone service, at each hotel where we will be staying, free Internet service is provided. Also, the tour bus has free Internet service as well.

DIGITAL MAPS OF DAILY TRIP ITINERARY

For each tour trip itinerary , you will see at the bottom of each day's itiner ary a link to see a Google Map of the route and sites we'll be seeing each day. Here's an example:

Tour Day 1:   G oogle Map Itinerary

DAILY SCHEDULE

We will leave our place of lodging each day at 7:45 am and return around 4:00 - 5:00 pm. From this time on, you will have free time to eat, relax, see the local sites and culture, etc.

PERSONAL TRAVEL IN ISRAEL

You can take a taxi, walk, use the bus or light rail train system. The best option is to make sure you have Internet in Israel (you can activate your phone or get an Israeli SIM card) and use Google Maps. It will tell you exactly which bus, light rail train, or walking route will best suit you. It also works in real-time, so you can see exactly when buses and trains are arriving and departing.

The minimum age for trip participants is 12 years old unless other arrangements have been made with tour hosts.

Then we'll walk to the Lions' Gate and see the famous Eastern Gate and Eastern Wall , where we'll see ancient stones dating back to the time of Solomon and see the evidence of the original Temple Mount and its expansions over the years. Then we'll see   the Church of St. Anne,  where the Pool of Bethesda  is located, the place Jesus healed a sick man after he had waited 38 long years. Free time afterward.
