Whitesnake are a band hailing from Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, England who formed in 1978. They were one of the most popular British hard rock bands of the 1980’s and have released eleven studio albums with a twelfth coming in May 2015.

The band begins with lead singer David Coverdale, a singer who had shot to fame in 1974 as the lead singer of hard rock legends Deep Purple, however his time in the band was particularly fraught. A year after he joined the band, their lead guitarist, arranger and founding member Ritchie Blackmore quit as he felt they were losing sight of their hard rock origins. The band were sent into a tailspin by Blackmore’s departure but Coverdale took the reins, desperate to keep the band going. They recruited a new guitarist but the damage had been done, and the band’s third album with Coverdale at the helm, 1976’s “Come Taste The Band”, sank without a trace and they split soon afterwards.

Coverdale was heartbroken by Purple’s demise but he soldiered on, and he spent the rest of 1976 preparing his solo career. He released his solo debut in February 1977, an album called “White Snake” that wasn’t a massive success but it steadied his career with panache, and would set up a success that would dwarf his achievements in Deep Purple. The debut album had been made in collaboration with a guitarist named Micky Moody, and Coverdale toured the record with him and a backing band called The White Snake Band. However, the duo soon realized that they both thrived when working in a full band set up, rather than making solo records.

Just before the release of “Northwinds”, Coverdale took his White Snake Band, shortened their name to Whitesnake, and became their lead vocalist. He had already worked so closely with them that he felt far more comfortable as one of the boys in the band rather than the main star of the show. “Northwind” was released to a far better reception than Coverdale’s debut had gotten but he’d already moved on, performing Whitesnake’s first live shows and releasing their debut effort, the “Snakebite E.P”, in June 1978. “Trouble”, their debut album, came in the autumn of the same year, but their true breakthrough wouldn’t come until 1980 and the album “Ready An’ Willing”.

The album was their first to enter the top ten in the U.K and even gave the band a top twenty single in the form of “Fool For Your Loving”. At the dawn of the 1980’s, the band were stars in the U.K and most of Europe, but the band wouldn’t make waves in the States until 1984’s “Slide It In”. Released on the major label Geffen, the album went Gold in the U.S within a year of its release and produced two minor hits in the form of “Slow An’ Easy” and “Love Ain’t No Stranger”. However, no-one could have predicted just how stratospheric the band would go with the release of their next album, 1987’s appropriately titled “1987”.

The album went top ten on both sides of the Atlantic within a week of its release and would go on to sell eight million copies in the U.S alone, giving them a number one single on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Here I Go Again” to boot. Back in the U.K the band were nominated for a BRIT Award for Best British Group off the back of it but the album was a phenomenon in America, making them true Arena headliners for the first time in their career. Ever since then, the band have been one of the most respected acts in hard rock, with an envious back catalogue of bona-fide hits still able to bring an arena or a festival to its knees thirty years after their heyday. Coverdale is still a truly magnetic frontman, and the whole band still come highly recommended.

Live reviews

The story of David Coverdale - the lead singer and founder of Whitesnake - is an interesting one in rock and roll terms, if for no other reason that he has an admirable track record of having the courage of his convictions. After landing his dream gig as frontman of Deep Purple in 1973, things didn’t pan out quite as he would have hoped, with 1975 record Come Taste the Band failing to match up to expectations. He resigned as the band dissolved, and after releasing one solo album, White Snake, in 1977, knew that he needed to be in a band if he was to truly flourish. White Snake was born, and they’re still going strong today. Sound-wise, the band followed a very similar trajectory to Deep Purple; starting out bluesy, and quickly picking up hard rock sensibilities. They’re still going strong today, too, having released too albums - Good to Be Bad and Forevermore - since reforming in 2002, and their relentless touring is testament to the strength of their fanbase, having co-headlined both UK arenas and Download Festival with Def Leppard and, last year, revisited those same huge rooms for shows with Journey and Thunder. The quickfire nature of their sets on that tour meant they played nothing but hits; so distinguished is their back catalogue, though, that they could afford to mix it up a bit night after night.

Whitesnake, the British rock group who formed almost 40 years ago still have huge demand to be seen live due to the consistency of their recorded albums. Having accumulated fans at many stages of their career, the veterans' crowds are often made up of a huge range of ages. Their common ground is a love of Whitesnake and during the classic singles such as 'Can You Hear The Wind Blow' they become one thousand strong choir to support the band during the anthemic choruses.

Whitesnake remains unchanged in terms of stage show, they know the rock formula and what works well so by keeping gimmicks to a minimum and putting music to the centre they are able to showcase their musicianship. The instrumentals are definitely not wavering with time, as Tommy Aldridge in particular shows incredible skill with his drum kit.

The band performs a melodic mash-up of 'Best Years / Bad Boys / Children of the Night' in hope to please majority of the crowd as they simply have so much work to condense into one two hour show. They have clearly made a great choice to include 'Fool for Your Loving' as the crowd cheer rapturously.

flawless.....

from the opening of Burn to the end of Still of the Night, this is rock at it's best.

look at this lineup:david coverdale in fine form and voice. made the crowd feel more than welcome in his snakepit. reb beach: guitar slinger extroadinaire making faces and playing with total precision. joel Hoekstra: a fire power with a smile that never quits with more chops than a texas bar b que. Michael devin: bass playin, harmonica blowing thumper of a player. Italian keyboard player micheke luppi smiling and filling in all the gaps. oh, then there is this drummer, tommy Aldridge, that drives the snake while the rest hold onto the bumper. this man is unbelievable in power and technique.

songs range from classic snake to days of deep purple. I loved 'slide it in' and 'bad boys' to 'gypsy' and 'mistreated'.

I was fortunate after seeing them 9 times from the distance to be by the front of the stage and able to meet them afterwards by their bus.

the4y were very kind and made this 55 year old feel 18 again ! mike berry

Whitesnake, British hard rock legends from the 80s, still have a huge fan following today consisting of a whole range of ages. Hard core veterans to fresh faced fans littered the arena to watch Whitesnake perform, unified by their love of the band. Over the decades the band has released a number of hits off of 12 studio albums, the most recent of which was released in 2015. Due to their consistency and ability to shape their music to suit the age they were playing in, the band has retained their popularity, a popularity that soared to great heights in the 80s. The band has so many hits that almost all their songs on their set list were easily recognisable: from ‘Here I Go Again’ and ‘Is This Love’ to ‘Love Ain’t No Stranger’ and ‘Can You Hear the Wind Blow’, Whitesnake drove the crowd into a frenzy and had everybody singing along, our voices mingling into one exultant chorus in the name of Whitesnake. The energy was electric and lively all night.

Of Whitesnake, it was as always on top, the sound was perfectly balanced arrangements of the songs amazing, evident that the group is friendly staff very. gift set for the VIP, very much and is a t-shirt, a poster signed by David Coverdale, an album with the band's discography. VIP disappoint my place because they do not correspond to reality, people with back rows came and blocked the view of the scene, not to mention the fact that at the end of the concert all the back rows come to the VIP area and blocked the way out of the room, bathed in beer and behaved provocatively. Overall, the concert was super and I am filled with emotion from a meeting with my favorite band!

Standing room only crowd that were ready to rock on a Friday night. Nice indoor venue at Talking Stick Resort in Scottsdale. It is still way too hot for outdoor shows. Both the band and I were glad it was indoors.

White Snake played awesome and the band seemed to enjoy the show as much as we did. They definitely liked the big crowd. David Coverdale was fantastic but couldn't fight off the dry Arizona air and started to lose his voice a little at the end of the show. He fought through it well. A lot of singers have to put vaporizers on stage in Arizona to keep the moisture up.

show was very good. Opening band was better then expected ( had never heard their music -- but I will now def look to add them to my play list). Whitesnake --- 4th time seeing them and they ( no matter who is in the line up) always deliver. The only thing that was unbelievable was the cost of a beer ( nothing of course to do with the band ) but 13.50$ a beer ---WTF -- Never say never but I'm pretty sure I just saw my last show at the Aztec Theater.

The show was good. This was the first time, believe it or not, that I've seen Whitesnake. Granted Coverdale is 63, and he doesn't quite have the voice he once did, I still would have liked the volume of his singing a bit higher. The music sorta drowned him out. Also, many of their greatest songs that we all know were omitted from the set list. Then, two guitar and one drum solo, could've been left out. We still had a very good time.

this all hits show is just what you get all hits played to perfection. the band showed great stage presence and they were always having fun and enjoying them self's on stage.favorite moment was when david reached down and touched my hand during the performance, must have been god sent as i actually was blown/fell backwards at that moment, it was awesome...and yes they love to throw you picks so get your self upstage for this one!

These guys are awesome! David Coverdale's vocals aren't what they used to be sure, but he still sounds pretty amazing for his age. They sound great! They play the songs right on key, not a thing wrong! Joel Hoekstra and Reb Beach have good guitar chemistry on stage, it's freakin' awesome! Best show I've ever seen. Tommy is also still a great drummer, better than Don Brewer, that's for sure. Just see them, it's a must see show.

About Whitesnake

Before a new, more hard-hitting Whitesnake was launched in late 1982, there was a lot of chopping and changing within the group. Bernie Marsden left to set up SOS, and then Alaska - who later supported Deep Purple at the 1985 Knebworth Festival. Ian Paice and Neil Murray jumped ship to join Gary Moore's band for two years of rather ghastly heavy metal.

The band initially toured to promote 'Saints & Sinners', which had mostly been recorded by the Mk 4 line-up as it was in the process of disintegrating. Unsurprisingly it ranks as one of Whitesnake's weakest efforts. The two strongest tracks (by some distance) were 'Here I Go Again' and 'Crying In The Rain' (both of which would be re-recorded by later incarnations). Nevertheless, Whitesnake's UK popularity remained undiminished, and the new band's tour was rounded off with a pyrotechnic headlining appearance at the Donnington Festival, which adopted a suitably military theme ("Whitesnake Commandos" t-shirts and press packs). New single 'Guilty Of Love' was released to coincide, and the band made the 'Slide It In' album for release in early 1984. Yet again however, by the time it appeared, the line-up which had recorded it was history.

The band's increasingly heavy, flash approach lead to Micky Moody leaving for good at the end of the tour. He was replaced by latter-day Thin Lizzy guitarist John Sykes, who embodied the style which the band were heading towards. Colin Hodgkinson had not fitted in as hoped, and was quickly replaced by the returning Neil Murray.

The band continued as a five piece, with the lead instrumentalists enjoying more space to express themselves on stage within Whitesnake's dense wall of sound. It was ironic for Jon Lord, who was planning to leave at the end of the tour. He played his last Whitesnake show on Swedish TV's 'Mandagsborsen' (April 16th 1984), and then left to help finalise the Deep Purple Mk 2 reunion. In keeping with the new, streamlined Whitesnake, it was decided not to replace him. Keyboards were instead handled by off-stage player Richard Bailey and for a time Whitesnake were officially a four piece.

Before recording their all important new album, another personnel change was made, when Cozy Powell's suggestion of a four way financial split within the band fell on stony ground. He played his last Whitesnake show at the huge 'Rock In Rio' festival in January 1985, before leaving to become the 'P' in a new 'ELP'.

Whitesnake was formed in 1978 by singer David Coverdale after his departure from Deep Purple. The band originated in Middlesbrough, England, and quickly made a name for itself in the rock music scene. Whitesnake is celebrated for its blending of hard rock with blues influences, creating a distinct sound that resonated with audiences worldwide. They are known for their energetic live performances and anthemic rock songs, contributing significantly to the hard rock and glam metal scenes of the 1980s.

The band’s significant impact on the music business is marked by numerous multi-platinum albums, hit singles, and successful global tours. Whitesnake’s legacy includes iconic tracks such as “Here I Go Again” and “Is This Love,” which have become staples on rock radio stations. The band’s first single was “Snakebite” released in 1978, followed by their debut album, Trouble , in the same year. Over the years, Whitesnake has released thirteen studio albums, numerous EPs, live albums, and compilations, showcasing their enduring appeal and ability to evolve musically.

Whitesnake drew inspiration from blues and rock legends such as Led Zeppelin, Free, and Deep Purple, blending these influences into their own distinctive style. In turn, Whitesnake has influenced a wide range of artists and bands across various genres, leaving an indelible mark on the rock and metal scenes.

David Coverdale

David Coverdale was born on September 1951 in Saltburn-by-the-Sea, North Riding of Yorkshire, England. He is the founder and lead vocalist of the hard rock band Whitesnake. Before Whitesnake’s formation in 1978, Coverdale was the lead singer for Deep Purple from 1973 to 1976. Following his tenure with Deep Purple, he embarked on a solo career, releasing albums White Snake and Northwinds , which laid the groundwork for Whitesnake’s sound.

David Coverdale’s work with Whitesnake has been pivotal in the rock music landscape, with the band achieving widespread success in the 1980s. Their blend of hard rock with blues influences, coupled with Coverdale’s powerful, blues-tinged voice, garnered them significant acclaim and a dedicated fan base. Notable achievements include the multi-platinum album Whitesnake (1987), featuring hits like “Here I Go Again” and “Is This Love,” which propelled them to international stardom.

During a hiatus from Whitesnake, David Coverdale collaborated with Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page on the Coverdale–Page album in 1993, which was certified platinum. In 1997, the album Restless Heart was released under the moniker “David Coverdale & Whitesnake,” initially intended as a solo project. Coverdale’s third solo album, Into the Light , came out in 2000.

David Coverdale’s contributions to music were officially recognized when he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 as a member of Deep Purple. His enduring influence in rock music is evident in the lasting popularity of Whitesnake’s music and the respect he commands among peers and fans alike.

Tommy Aldridge

Tommy Aldridge was born on August 15, 1950. His involvement with Whitesnake , among other notable bands like Black Oak Arkansas, Ozzy Osbourne, and Thin Lizzy, underscores his pivotal role in shaping the drumming landscape within these musical styles. Aldridge’s journey with Whitesnake began in 1987 when he joined the band during the height of its success, following the release of the multi-platinum Whitesnake album. His powerful drumming was a key element on the band’s next project, Slip of the Tongue , released in 1989. This album further solidified Whitesnake’s position in rock music, with Aldridge’s skillful drumming playing a significant role in its sound and success.

Aldridge’s tenure with Whitesnake was marked by his unique double bass drumming style, which added a dynamic and aggressive rhythm section to the band’s music. This technique not only influenced the sound of Whitesnake but also inspired many upcoming drummers in the rock genre. After an initial stint that ended in the early 1990s when Whitesnake went on hiatus, Aldridge returned to the band multiple times, most notably in 2003 and again in 2013 for the “Year of the Snake” tour. His contributions can be heard on live recordings and studio albums from these periods, including Live… in the Shadow of the Blues , Good to Be Bad , and the band’s more recent works, The Purple Album and Flesh & Blood .

Beyond Whitesnake, Aldridge’s career has been distinguished by his work with a range of artists, showcasing his versatility and enduring influence in the music industry. His self-taught technique, characterized by a pioneering double bass drum style, has not only defined his career but has also left a lasting impact on the evolution of drumming in rock music.

John Sykes tenure with Whitesnake marked a significant phase in both his career and the band’s evolution. After his involvement with Tygers of Pan Tang and Thin Lizzy, Sykes joined Whitesnake, contributing to the band’s shift towards a more mainstream rock sound. His influence is most prominently featured on Whitesnake’s 1987 self-titled album, which achieved multi-platinum status and solidified the band’s success, especially in the United States. This album included hits like “Here I Go Again” and “Is This Love,” with Sykes’ guitar work becoming a defining element of Whitesnake’s sound during this period.

Despite the success, Sykes’ relationship with Whitesnake was tumultuous, leading to his departure from the band before the 1987 album’s release. This departure was marked by contention, significantly impacting Sykes’ career trajectory and leading him to form his own group, Blue Murder. Sykes’ time with Whitesnake, albeit brief, was a pivotal period that showcased his guitar prowess and played a crucial role in the band’s commercial breakthrough, particularly in the American market. His contributions during this time remain integral to Whitesnake’s legacy and are reflective of Sykes’ lasting influence on the rock genre.

Reb Beach has been a vital member of Whitesnake since 2003, contributing his skills as a guitarist and backing vocalist. Beach’s tenure with the band has seen him participate in numerous albums and live performances, showcasing his versatile guitar playing and harmonious backing vocals. His work is featured on live albums such as Live… in the Still of the Night (2006) and Live: In the Shadow of the Blues (2006), as well as studio albums including Good to Be Bad (2008) and Forevermore (2011). Beach’s contributions have continued into the band’s more recent works, from The Purple Album (2015) onwards, demonstrating his enduring role in shaping the sound and success of Whitesnake.

Joel Hoekstra

Joel Hoekstra joined Whitesnake in 2014, infusing the band with his dynamic guitar playing. Since his arrival, Hoekstra has played a significant role in the band’s studio recordings, contributing to albums like The Purple Album (2015), The Purple Tour (2018), Flesh & Blood (2019), and the remix of Restless Heart (2021). His guitar work complements the band’s evolving sound, providing both melodic depth and driving riffs that have become a staple in Whitesnake’s music during this era.

Michele Luppi

Since 2015, Michele Luppi has served as the keyboardist and backing vocalist for Whitesnake, bringing a new dimension to the band’s sound. Luppi’s expertise is evident in his live performances and studio recordings, contributing to the rich, layered soundscapes that define Whitesnake’s recent albums. His talents are showcased in The Purple Tour (2018) and Flesh & Blood (2019), where his keyboard playing and vocal harmonies enrich the band’s sonic palette.

Dino Jelusick

Dino Jelusick joined Whitesnake in 2021, adding his skills on keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals. Although Jelusick’s time with the band has been relatively short compared to other members, his versatile musicianship is expected to contribute significantly to the band’s future projects. His ability to play multiple instruments and provide vocal support positions him as a valuable addition to Whitesnake’s lineup.

Tanya O’Callaghan

Tanya O’Callaghan became part of Whitesnake as a bassist and backing vocalist, marking a new chapter in the band’s evolving lineup. Although specific contributions to Whitesnake’s discography are yet to be detailed, O’Callaghan’s experience and talent promise to uphold the band’s legacy of powerful performances and recordings. Her role as a bassist will anchor the rhythm section, while her backing vocals will complement the band’s rich harmonic arrangements.

Neil Murray

Neil Murray served as Whitesnake’s bassist from 1978 to 1982 and again from 1983 to 1986. His tenure with the band saw him contribute to a range of Whitesnake releases, starting with the Snakebite EP in 1978 and spanning through to the band’s self-titled album, Whitesnake (1987), although he did not play on Whitesnake Commandos (1983) and the UK version of Slide It In (1984). Murray’s solid bass playing provided the foundational groove for many of Whitesnake’s classic tracks, making him a key figure in the band’s early success. His contributions were further acknowledged in the live album Live in ’84: Back to the Bone (2014), showcasing his performances during this influential period.

Micky Moody

Micky Moody was a guitarist and backing vocalist for Whitesnake from 1978 to 1982 and for a brief period in 1982-1983. He was instrumental in the early sound and development of the band, contributing to all Whitesnake releases from their debut EP Snakebite in 1978 up to the UK version of Slide It In in 1984. Moody’s blues-infused guitar work and backing vocals were central to Whitesnake’s music, helping to craft the band’s distinctive blend of hard rock and blues.

Bernie Marsden

Bernie Marsden was with Whitesnake from the band’s inception in 1978 until 1982. During his time with the band, Marsden’s guitar playing and songwriting were pivotal, contributing to all Whitesnake releases from Snakebite (1978) through to Saints & Sinners (1982). Marsden’s contributions to Whitesnake’s early sound were significant, blending blues and rock elements that would define the band’s musical direction in their formative years.

Dave “Duck” Dowle

Dave “Duck” Dowle played drums for Whitesnake from 1978 to 1979, participating in the band’s early recordings and helping to establish their sound. Dowle’s drumming can be heard on all Whitesnake releases from their debut Snakebite EP to Live at Hammersmith (1980), capturing the energy and drive of the band’s early live performances.

Jon Lord, renowned for his work with Deep Purple, was Whitesnake’s keyboardist from 1978 to 1984. His keyboard work featured on all Whitesnake releases from Trouble (1978) to Slide It In (1984), adding a distinctive, classically influenced texture to the band’s hard rock sound. Lord’s musicianship was not only integral to Whitesnake’s studio albums but also to their live performances, as evidenced by his appearance on Live in ’84: Back to the Bone (2014), a testament to his enduring legacy within the band.

Ian Paice joined Whitesnake on drums from 1979 to 1982, bringing with him the experience and skill he had honed as a member of Deep Purple. During his time with Whitesnake, Paice contributed to the albums Ready an’ Willing (1980), Come an’ Get It (1981), and Saints & Sinners (1982). His precise and powerful drumming style played a crucial role in defining the band’s sound during this period, helping to solidify Whitesnake’s reputation as one of the leading hard rock bands of the era.

Whitesnake Are Doing a Farewell Tour, First Two Dates Announced

Whitesnake have announced the first two dates on what will be their upcoming farewell tour.

The band, which was formed in 1978 by singer David Coverdale after the dissolution of Deep Purple, are set to perform at two festivals in 2022 — Hellfest in Clisson, France on June 23 and Rock Imperium Festival in Cartagena, Spain on June 24 through 25.

This final run should not come as a surprise to Whitesnake fans who have kept tabs on Coverdale over the last year, as he floated the idea of a farewell tour multiple times in the recent past. A 2020 trek was canceled to afford the singer time to undergo hernia surgery  and he later suggested that one last Whitesnake tour would take place in 2022, presuming the dust had settled on the pandemic and live shows were a go once more.

The idea had clearly been rattling around in his head for quite some time, however. In the fall Coverdale, who had just celebrated his 69th birthday two months earlier, joked on the Rhino Podcast , "What could be a better age for the lead singer of Whitesnake [to retire] than 69? I'd even designed really terrible T-shirts to go with it."

He explained that he had loose intentions on bringing things to a conclusion at some point this year, but obviously things got pushed further out. "So the plan was to do literally an appreciation and gratitude [tour] for such an extraordinary support for five decades, and then maybe go into 2021," added Coverdale.

If this truly is the end of Whitesnake and the band elects not to record another record, the legendary catalog will stand at 13 studio albums, one of them being  The Purple Album , a reimagining of songs from Coverdale's time spent in Deep Purple. Their last album,  Flesh & Blood , was released in 2019.
