No matter what kind of road trip you’re interested in there’s a Wisconsin getaway perfect for you.

From scenic drives in Wisconsin to exploring Wisconsin’s major cities, I’m sure you’ll have a great time driving through Wisconsin on one of these road trips.

Drive The Great River Road National Scenic Byway

• Trempealeau

Start your exploration of Wisconsin’s section of the Great River Road National Scenic Byway in Prescott.

There you can learn more about this scenic drive in Wisconsin at the Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center.

From there, continue south with a stop in the fun town of Stockholm, one of the cutest small towns in Wisconsin .

Next, you’ll stop in Alma where you’ll find a series of unique walkways thanks to the town being so closely built between the river and the steep mountain bluffs.

Your final stop is Trempealeau. The town has a charming main street, the historic Trempealeau Hotel, and it is close to the Perrot State Park and Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge.

Explore The Big Cities Of Wisconsin Road Trip

Wisconsin isn’t just small towns and scenic drives. It’s also got some great big cities to explore.

For your starting point, you can either choose Kenosha or Milwaukee.

Both cities are pretty close to each other, but I suggest starting in Kenosha so you’d don’t have to backtrack at all.

In Kenosha, there are tons of cool museums to explore, like the Kenosha Public Museum or the Dinosaur Discovery Museum.

From Kenosha, head north along Lake Michigan and stop in Milwaukee. There are so many things to do in Milwaukee.

One of the coolest Wisconsin weekend getaways is in Milwaukee.

It is also one of the most popular Wisconsin road trip destinations because of its fun attractions like the plethora of breweries and the Harley-Davidson Museum.

In Madison, I suggest taking in the history and learning all about Wisconsin.

Finish your Wisconsin road trips through big cities in Green Bay, home of the Green Bay Packers, where sports fans will find plenty to do. There are many other things to do in Green Bay as well!

Take The Kettle Moraine Wisconsin Scenic Drive

One of the best scenic drives in Wisconsin is the Kettle Moraine Scenic Route.

The route connects the Northern and Southern parts of the Kettle Moraine State Forest and crosses through 6 counties.

Start in the northern section at Elkhart Lake and enjoy the gorgeous views, especially if you are visiting the Midwest in the fall.

From there, continue south and make a stop at the Ice Age Visitor Center to learn about the glacier that helped shape the Wisconsin landscape.

As you continue south, you’ll find plenty of scenic spots, historic sites, and epic places to go hiking in Wisconsin.

I suggest taking a break and stretching your legs about halfway through at the Scuppernong Springs Nature Trail.

It’s a pretty easy 1.8-mile trail that takes you through some scenic areas of Kettle Moraine Park.

Your Kettle Moraine Scenic Route ends at Whitewater Lake, where you can hang out on the beach, go boating, or just enjoy the views on a walk.

I suggest driving across Wisconsin on Highway 33 from east to west, which means starting in Port Washington.

Port Washington, as its name suggests, is a charming port town that is full of historic buildings, Lake Michigan views, and a lively downtown district.

As you continue driving west, you’ll come to the town of West Bend.

In West Bend, there are a few unique museums you can check out, like the Museum of Wisconsin Art, the Regal Ware Museum, and the St. Agnes Historical Site.

Continuing west there are a ton of small towns you can stop in, and while you don’t have to stop in all of them, I suggest at least taking a break in Portage.

Portage has two rivers that connect the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, historic buildings, and you can also walk a portion of the National Ice Age Trail.

Your last stop as you cross Wisconsin is in La Crosse, just before the border into Minnesota.

In La Crosse, see the ‘World’s Largest Six Pack’, the Mississippi River, and explore the vibrant town.

Explore The Beautiful Waterfalls Of Wisconsin Road Trip

• Big Manitou Falls
• Lost Creek Falls
• Morgan Falls
• Copper Falls

Wisconsin is full of beautiful waterfalls, so why not make a waterfalls of Wisconsin road trip?

Your first stop should be Big Manitou Falls, the highest waterfall in Wisconsin. It drops 165 feet into the Black River and puts on quite the show.

From there, head to the natural hidden woodland waterfall outside of Cornocopia, the Lost Creek Falls.

They are not in a designated park, and the hike is a bit more difficult, but it’s worth it for the view of a piece of untouched Wisconsin woodland.

After testing out your hiking skills, try a much easier trail of about a mile to view the Morgan Falls.

Morgan Falls is a thin waterfall that trails down the side of a cliff face for about 80 feet before dropping into a tributary.

Finish your waterfalls of Wisconsin road trip at Copper Falls in Copper Falls State Park, just one of the many beautiful state parks in Wisconsin .

The state park has a few waterfalls, so pick a trail, and head out to see one of them. But if you just want to see one, I suggest at least hiking to the Copper Falls themselves.

Wisconsin’s Frank Lloyd Wright Trail

• Spring Green
• Richland Center

The famous American architect was born and raised in Wisconsin, so it’s no surprise that one of the best places to visit in Wisconsin is the Frank Lloyd Wright Trail .

The trail is spread out between five cities that each have a prominent Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building, and all of the buildings on the trail are open to the public.

So make sure to give yourself plenty of time to explore each one.

You’ll start the self-guided trail in Racine where you can admire the SC Johnson Administration Building and Research Tower as well as Wingspread, two iconic Wright buildings.

From there, make a quick stop in Milwaukee to see the Burnham American System-Built homes Wright helped design. Stop for a quick bite to eat or for dinner at one of the restaurants in Milwaukee.

Next, in Madison, you can check out the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center as well as the First Unitarian Society building.

In Spring Green you can tour Wright’s home and studio, Taliesin, and the Wyoming Valley School.

Your last stop on this unique Wisconsin getaway is the AD German Warehouse in Richland Center.

Enjoy The Scenic Highway 42 To Door County

• Sturgeon Bay

If you want to take a scenic Wisconsin drive on the way to visiting Door County, I suggest the Highway 42 road trip.

Start in Sheboygan, the Bratwurst Capital of the World, and spend some time exploring this cute town with a unique history.

Continue driving on the beautiful twisty roads and make your next stop at Kewaunee. Kewaunee is a small town that has some beautiful views of Lake Michigan.

After enjoying the views in Kewaunee you’ll take some time to stop and explore Sturgeon Bay.

Sturgeon Bay puts you just barely in Door County, so it’s a good place to stop.

There are just so many things to do in Door County!

If you want to do the full Door County Circle Tour as well, you’ll continue past Sturgeon Bay.

But if not, after exploring Sturgeon Bay, head back to Sheboygan, or drive past Sheboygan and spend some time in Chicago.

Drive The Door County Circle Tour

• Jacksonport

There are a ton of cute towns scattered throughout the peninsula that make up Door County, and I’ve just chosen a few of my favorites.

So feel free to make even more stops along the way, but just make sure to give yourself plenty of time.

One of the towns that serve as a welcoming area for Door County is Brussels.

The charming town is known for having the largest Belgian settlement in the country and is known for its charming farms, back roads, and nods to classic Belgian architecture.

From there, head into Sturgeon Bay, which is the largest city on the Door County peninsula. Take some time to explore the visitors center and the city.

Heading around the peninsula on the Bay Side, make a stop in Egg Harbor.

It’s a popular town to explore, grab a bite to eat, at some of the restaurants in Door County , and enjoy the views from the marina and beach.

The next stop you’ll make is at Gills Rock, which is the northernmost tip of the peninsula.

Gills Rock is a quaint fishing village that offers up some serious old-world charm.

As you finish up your scenic drive in Wisconsin, you’ll come down the Lake Side of the peninsula, where you’ll make your final stop in Jacksonport.

Walk the white sandy beaches in Door County , shop for some souvenirs, or try paddling on the lake before you head home.

If you have time, there are so many things to do in Washington Island , so plan to explore that part of Door County as well.

Wisconsin Road Trips For Hiking The Best State Parks

• Devil’s Lake State Park
• Governor Dodge State Park
• Harrington Beach State Park
• Copper Falls State Park
• Amnicon Falls State Park

For this getaway in Wisconsin, you’ll be traveling from southern Wisconsin all the way to northern Wisconsin exploring Wisconsin’s best state parks.

Start in southern Wisconsin at Devil’s Lake State Park, in Baraboo, just outside of the famous Wisconsin Dells .

Devil’s Lake State Park is often considered the best state park in Wisconsin, so it’s a perfect must-see starting point.

You’ll take a short drive to get to Governor Dodge State Park, which has tons of trails, two lakes to swim in, and massive sandstone bluffs.

Next, head towards Lake Michigan and spend some time relaxing on the beaches of Harrington Beach State Park.

When you’ve had your fill of sunny time spent on the sand start driving north to Copper Falls State Park.

This is the longest stretch of the road trip, so feel free to make any stops along the way.

At Copper Falls State Park, choose one of the many trails that leads to the park’s equally many waterfalls.

For your last stop, spend some time exploring Amnicon Falls State Park.

You can hike to see even more waterfalls, admire the beautiful scenery, and relax before heading home.

Find The Best Hidden Gems Of Wisconsin On This Road Trip

• Cave Of The Mounds

• Witches Gulch

This is one of the best Wisconsin road trips if you want to see some of the lesser-known attractions in the state, the true Midwest hidden gems.

The first stop is in the charming small town of New Glarus. New Glarus is America’s Little Switzerland and is full of beer gardens, Swiss-inspired architecture, and more.

After exploring the small town, head to the Cave of the Mounds, which is a National Natural Landmark in Wisconsin where you can explore a massive limestone cave. It is on

Your next stop is in Spring Green to see the House on the Rock. This unique tourist attraction was designed by architect Alex Jordan Jr and opened in 1959.

Inside you’ll find shops, gardens, distinctly designed rooms, and even whole streets. It’s a really cool place to see in Wisconsin.

After exploring that man-made wonder, check out the natural wonder that is Witches Gulch in Wisconsin Dells. This is one of the best Midwest weekend getaways!

You’ll need to take a boat tour to see this unique rock canyon that has a narrow wooden bridge, but it’s worth it.

At the top of Grandad Bluff, because of its location, you are able to look down into Iowa, Minnesota, and of course, Wisconsin.

Explore The Beaches And Lakes On This Wisconsin Road Trips

Not only does Wisconsin have shores on two Great Lakes, but there are also a ton of smaller lakes scattered throughout the state.

For this lakeside getaway in Wisconsin, you’ll drive from the southern area of the state near Lake Michigan all the way to the northern area of the state at Lake Superior.

Start your drive with some time spent at Racine North Beach which is on the shores of Lake Michigan.

It’s just outside of Milwaukee and is a favorite Lake Michigan beach in the area. From there, head to Geneva Lake.

Geneva Lake is a popular day trip from Chicago because it is a great lake with beautiful beaches but also a fun beachy town.

Next, spend some time at Devil’s Lake State Park and enjoy Devil’s Lake. You can boat, swim, or simply hike and walking around the lake.

As you start to head towards Lake Superior, take a break at Lake Wissota, just outside of Chippewa Falls.

It’s a calm lake that is perfect for some time spent relaxing.

The last stop on this epic road trip through Wisconsin is Meyers Beach, on Lake Superior.

Rent a kayak and explore the Meyers Beach Caves, spend the afternoon swimming, or just walk along the sandy shore.

Spend The Day In The Driftless Area Of Vernon County

• The Cashton Amish Community
• Wildcat Mountain State Park
• Kickapoo Valley Reserve State Natural Area

There are so many stops on this particular scenic drive through Wisconsin because it’s a small area and perfect for a day trip.

In total, if you check out all of these spots, you’ll only spend a little over an hour on the road. Which means you can take your time exploring each stop.

Start in Westby, which is a Norwegian community in Wisconsin that is fun to explore.

From there, take a short drive to see the Cashton Amish Community. You can find locally made Amish goods and experience a little bit of Amish culture.

After seeing the Amish, spend some time hiking at both the Wildcat Mountain State Park and Kickapoo Valley Reserve State Natural Area.

They are both super close to one another and have some beautiful landscapes and views.

Head a little west to enjoy the charming town of Hillsboro, which is the Czech Capital of Wisconsin.

Your next stops are La Farge and Viola. La Farge is a tiny village that has a great farmer’s market and apple orchard.

Viola is best known for its archeological historic site, the ancient Mound Park, and that is where you’ll end your day trip in the Driftless Area of Vernon County.

Lake Superior Highway

• Bayfield and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

To take this Wisconsin scenic drive along Lake Superior, I suggest starting in the town of Superior.

It’s just within the border of Wisconsin, across from Duluth in Minnesota. It’s America’s most inland port and there is plenty to do and see there.

From there, head to Cornucopia, which is the northernmost town in Wisconsin and home to the Lost Creek Falls, one of the best waterfalls in Wisconsin.

Continue driving along the shore of Lake Superior and stop in the town of Bayfield.

Not only is Bayfield a super cute town to explore, but it’s also how you get to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, one of the most beautiful national parks in the Midwest.

I highly suggest taking the time to tour the 22 tiny islands, their caves, and their shores.

Your last stop along the Lake Superior Highway is Ashland, Wisconsin.

Ashland is another charming town to explore that has a great main street full of shops, restaurants, and more.

Packing List For Your Wisconsin Road Trips

If you will be traveling, either by plane or car to the Midwest, here are some  tips on how to pack lightly.

Great River Road Wisconsin Day Trip: The Best Stops

Have you heard of the Great River Road National Scenic Byway? Because if there was one word to describe the Wisconsin stretch, it would be UNDERRATED! A Great River Road Wisconsin Day Trip should be a part of everyone’s summer or fall. It is truly one of the best day trips in the Midwest.

We chose a summer Saturday and decided to cruise from Prescott, Wisconsin down to Nelson, Wisconsin. But that’s surely not the Great River Road in its entirety! Find out more about how long this road trip could really be . Hint: It takes DAYS.

Where does the Great River Road begin and end?

The Great River Road is 3,000 miles long and through 10 states! It starts in northern Minnesota up from Lake Itasca State Park at the upper Mississippi River. Then it’s through St. Louis and all the way down to Louisiana and into the Gulf of Mexico. Crazy!

The entire stretch has hundreds of river towns and makes for numerous fun day trips across the Midwest and Southern United States. It is about 36 hours of straight driving!

Where does the Great River Road Wisconsin start?

The Wisconsin section is part of Highway 35 (right along the Minnesota border) and meanders down the Mississippi River for 250 miles from Prescott to Potosi. The scenic drive makes for a perfect day or weekend trip that includes 33 unique towns as potential stops!

From wineries and breweries to small-town bars and decks overlooking the patio, you will find so many places to eat and drink. Plus, hiking trails, historic sites, one-of-a-kind shops, and fantastic river views from start to finish.

The Great River Road Wisconsin Day Trip Scenic Stops

For the purpose of this blog post, I’ll take you through a full-day trip along (some of) the Wisconsin section of the Great River Road. I highly recommend doing this trip and following these places of interest! First things first…

Start in the morning!

From St. Paul or Minneapolis, it’s only about half an hour to Prescott, Wisconsin, where you will start the day . There are a lot of stops so make sure to get going as early as you can! We left at 10:00 AM in order to make it to the first stop by about 10:45 AM.

Prescott, Wisconsin

Stop #1 along Wisconsin’s Great River Road is Prescott, a town of 4,200, and the largest town (still small!) that you’ll see all day. As soon as you enter, you can check out all of the boats on both the mighty Mississippi River and St. Croix River (this is where they merge) with a few local parks with people enjoying the sunshine.

Head right into the downtown area where you could easily spend a full day! All of the restaurants, bars, and shops can keep you busy for hours.

Great River Road Information Center

If you’re looking for more information on your upcoming adventure, stop in the Visitor and Learning Center , located in Prescott. Don’t feel like you have to do it—we didn’t, but if you have an interest in the full Great River Road and its history, check it out!

Twisted Oak Coffee House

Time to (officially) get the day started at this great coffee shop, Twisted Oak Coffee House . It’s an adorable coffee shop right off Broad St. downtown and has both comfy indoor seating and a few tables out front if it’s a good day to enjoy the weather. Grab your coffee (Americanos are great), pick a place to chill, and slowly settle into your day. Bonus: a chocolate-covered coffee bean on top! 🙂

Downtown Shops

After your coffee (or while you sip it), mosey around downtown Prescott. There are a bunch of cute shops that line Broad St. including antique stores and gift shops.

Muddy Waters Bar & Grill

My FAVORITE part about Prescott is Muddy Waters Bar & Grill . You have to stop here for lunch! Also located right on the main street, they have an inside bar where I love the vibe, as well as a multi-level outdoor deck space with views of the river. It’s the perfect atmosphere!

DO NOT miss the Leon’s House Smoked Salmon appetizer. It’s our fav and we’ve literally driven 40 minutes just to get it! Fresh fish with small pieces of French bread and dill cream cheese. Omg. Keep them coming…

It’s tough to go wrong with the food in general, but definitely put this order in along with your drinks!

TIP: For today’s purposes, I recommend just grabbing a drink and the salmon appetizer since more stops to come include delicious food! Think of today as an “ order a small amount to test as many foods as possible day! ” Next up:

Hager City, Wisconsin

Leaving Prescott, you’ll hop right onto 35 (aka the Great River Road Scenic Byway!) and start following the course of the Mississippi River. And your next point of interest is about 23 minutes away in Hager City, Wisconsin. Simply look for the ginormous chicken!

Hager Heights Drive-In

A famous stop indeed! Broasted Chicken served up at Hager Heights Drive-In. We pulled in here around 12:45 and the tables were consistently full, along with a 5+ cars drive-through line. We chose to order at the window and find a picnic table to give this broasted chicken a go!

This was my first time trying broasted chicken which, much like fried, is battered, seasoned, and quickly fried. BUT it’s then cooked in a high-pressure cooker, keeping it nice and juicy.

We just wanted to try it and got a 2-piece chicken to share for about $5. While I wasn’t absolutely blown away and won’t tell you to run here, it was definitely juicy and crispy. Of course, anything fried is good! It’s worth it if you’re hungry, have time, and want to check it off your bucket list.

Note: People are surprised by my review. So, give it a try yourself!

PRO TIP: CASH ONLY! There is an ATM on-site if needed. On that note, let’s keep it moving…

Bay City, Wisconsin

After a short 6-minute drive from Hager City, you’ll roll into Bay City, Wisconsin. Home of Lake Pepin and also a great place to shop for antiques. Stop at Old Stuff right off the side of the road and see what gems you can find.

The owners are an older couple and we were able to have a quick conversation with him about his pretty incredible woodworking! Stop in to check it out.

Sidenote: be on the lookout for bald eagles!

Maiden Rock, Wisconsin

Next on the Great River Road adventure is the fun little town of Maiden Rock, Wisconsin. And in true Wisconsin fashion, the bar is a really fun place to be haha. They also have a few shops, plus a winery and cidery a few miles out. Here are your stops:

The Six String Saloon

A great bar full of locals and motorcyclists looking for a Saturday beverage—or six. The Six String Saloon has a wood interior with high ceilings, a jukebox, slot machines, and bartenders ready to get to know you a little bit. There’s also an outdoor deck overlooking the Mississippi River. I loved the vibe of the friendly and welcoming inside so we bellied up.

And drank our calories at this stop and were not disappointed. This was probably our longest stop of the day and just 16 minutes from Bay City.

Cultural Cloth

One other place to stop in the downtown area of Maiden Rock is Cultural Cloth, just a short walk from the bar. Featuring women artisans who weave, quilt, bead, print, etc., you’ll enter the shop and be blown away by the talent! All sorts of decor line the shop and its walls. Take a peek and maybe even find a hand-crafted pillow or quilt.

Maiden Rock Winery & Cidery

About 8 minutes, and 4.5 miles in the right direction, you’ll find Maiden Rock Winery & Cidery . A cute and casual winery, this is a quiet place to enjoy some hard cider or wine outside. They have a great range of options and we tried the Honeycrisp Cider (obviously the best apple!) which was sweet and delicious, as well as a light Pinot Grigio. Find a table outside amongst the grapes and enjoy!

And don’t miss perusing through the little shop right inside! They have homemade jams, honey, clothing, and obviously wine and cider! We opted for their Fire Stix Asparagus which was pickled and so tasty—and perfectly spicy.

Stockholm, Wisconsin

Omg, Stockholm. This is a must-stop! One of the historic river towns and of Swedish descent, there are a few places to go that you will love.

Stockholm Pie & General Store

For starters, make sure you enter Stockholm Pie & General Store . They have been named Best Cafe, Best Pie, AND Best Dessert on the Mississippi River by River Travel Magazine. True confession: we did not eat any pie. You know how it goes when you’re a few white claws and a glass of wine in…

But don’t let not eating pie stop you from checking things out! The General Store is full of local specialties and foods like maple syrup, eggs, chocolates, and also toys and gifts.

Humble Moon Folkstead & Saloon

Right across the street from the pie is Humble Moon Folkstead and Saloon . You should definitely stop in for a drink and admire the old, Swedish vibes. You can also get in a game of checkers with your beer! Ha.

They have a very cozy inside as well as an outdoor space if you feel like catching some rays! And the bartender was so kind and helpful.

Wellness Shop

I loved this beautiful store! And I am having trouble finding the name on Google Maps!? But, it’s only a few steps from the General Store on Spring St. and you can’t miss it. You’ll find home decor, candles, journals, and books in the beautiful space.

Pepin, Wisconsin

Once you take in everything Swedish, you only have about 8 minutes until your next destination which is the lively Pepin, Wisconsin. We didn’t even have this on our original list, but I’m so glad we stopped!

Garden Pub & Grill

We noticed this fun bar right off Great River Road; Garden Pub & Grill , an outdoor pub, and a lively summer stop! I loved the colorful atmosphere and range of outdoor seating. And it’s where I had to grab a Spotted Cow on tap, of course. You’ll probably be here a little too early for live music but stop on your way back if you feel like a few more beers and your favorite songs. And though we didn’t eat, the food looked good—especially the fish.

They also have a cute little gift shop we perused through and even got some homemade fudge which, omg, was delightful. Make sure to sample a few before you pick your favorite!

And finally, it’s time to eat again…

Nelson, Wisconsin

After your stop in Pepin, next on your travels is Nelson, Wisconsin, which is only about 10 minutes away.

Nelson Cheese Factory

We didn’t make it here and I’m so bummed. But if you have time, definitely go to the downtown Nelson area and stop for cheese curds and ice cream—all the CREAM!

That said, we did make it to one Nelson, Wisconsin stop which was our ultimate destination on our Wisconsin Great River Road Day Trip:

The Stone Barn: Pizza Farm

We LOVE pizza farms! And 15 minutes outside of Nelson is one of the best places for homemade, wood-fired pizza with the freshest farm ingredients. And the pizza isn’t the only great reason to visit The Stone Barn —the grounds and ambiance are perfect!

It was pretty busy here just before 6:00 PM on a Saturday. That said, it wasn’t overwhelming and there really is plenty of seating. You’ll get a number and after ordering at the counter, wait about 45 minutes before your pizza arrives. And it’s well worth the wait.

We ordered the Greek Pizza (no olives) and I’d definitely get it again. Red sauce-less, it was very light with flaky crust and delicious lamb, artichokes, and feta cheese on top. YUM. We just got the one pizza and, though we finished it, it was plenty!

Make sure to also grab some ice cream and check out the gift shop! This stop is literally for everyone in the whole family with the pretty farm, plenty of space for kids to play, and alcoholic beverages for adult groups.

There really isn’t a better way to grab a pizza!

Keep Heading South along Great River Road Wisconsin

Wisconsin’s Great River Road doesn’t stop in Nelson! If you are going to attempt to do the entire route, here are a few other points of interest to add in:

• Alma, Wisconsin : Hit the Buena Vista Lookout for some great views. Then go to another winery—Danzinger Vineyards.
• La Crosse, Wisconsin : The biggest town you’ve seen in a while! You’ll have plenty of restuarants, parks, and hikes to choose from.
• Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin: Shopping, dining, and history!
• Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge: Check it out if you are interested and you make your way towards northern Iowa.
• Potosi, Wisconsin: Stop at the Potosi brewery and the Whispering Bluffs Winery.

The Great River Road Wisconsin Day Trip

The city got its name from the Dells of the Wisconsin River.

From the Witch’s Gulch, you get an amazing view of the sandstone.

The Wisconsin Dells together with the village of Lake Delton form “the Dells” which is a popular tourist attraction site.

The first tourists came here in the 19th century and the site is still worth a visit years later.

In the downtown of Wisconsin Dells is the H.H. Bennett Museum and Historic Studio while to the north of downtown is the Dells of the Wisconsin River state natural area.

Almost the entire city of Wisconsin Dells is an amusement park.

The real heart of the adventure is the water park; time passes by so quickly when you’re having fun here.

2. Chippewa Falls

Chippewa Fall was incorporated as a city in 1869 and is located in Northwest Wisconsin on the Chippewa River.

The name Chippewa comes from the Ojibwa language; the river is named after the Ojibwa Native Americans.

Visit Chippewa Falls and learn all about its charm and history as you explore the great outdoors.

This city is the birthplace Seymour Cray who is known worldwide as the father of the supercomputer.

The best time to visit Chippewa Falls is during the Christmas holidays.

The residents here take their Christmas traditions very seriously.

Every year on the day after Thanksgiving, the city is transformed into a wonderland.

Magnificent lights are displayed alongside the shining angels in the Christmas Village in Irvine Park.

3. Spring Green

The Spring Green village is located about 1 hour to the west of Madison.

This small village is home to two of Wisconsin’s famous edifices which are must-sees for every architecture aficionado: Taliesin and House on the Rock.

The Taliesin complex is an 800-acre estate that was built as a tribute to Frank Lloyd Wright.

The House on the Rock is an awe-inspiring crowded attic that exhibits with quirky attractions.

Other places that you can visit on a day trip to Spring Green are the American Players Theater where Shakespeare’s plays are shown, the Spring Green General Store, the art galleries, and the emporium.

Baraboo is the largest city in Sauk County and is located on the Baraboo River.

This city is the winter home to the Ringling Brothers Circus.

If you love magic, you should visit the Circus World Museum, especially in summer when there is a daily parade with performances by magicians, clowns, and aerialists.

This museum preserves the legacy and history of the Ringling Brothers circus and is the only museum in the world that is exclusively clown-focused.

Another must­see landmark in Baraboo is the AI Ringling Theatre.

Nestled in the Baraboo Range is the Devil’s Lake State Park which is only 35 minutes away.

5. Devil’s Lake State Park

This park is one of the largest and most popular parks in Wisconsin covering an area of 3,730 hectares.

This park is situated about 35 miles northwest of Madison and is known for its 500-foot-high bluffs and its pink quartzite cliffs along the lake.

One of the primary attractions of the park is the Devil’s Lake which is a closed drainage lake located about 2 miles to the south of Baraboo.

This rectangle­shaped lake was created through by glaciers and covers an area of 150 hectares.

Within the park is the Baraboo Hills which are said to be much older than the lake.

The Southern part of the Hills was declared a National Natural Landmark in the year 1974.

This park is a popular tourist destination thanks to its scenic beauty and its proximity to the Wisconsin Dells.

The magical Mineral Point is a city in the southwest of Wisconsin.

There are numerous caves and badger holes here that tell about this small town’s history.

7. Madison Museum of Contemporary Art

This art museum, established in 1901, was formerly known as Madison Art Center.

9. Pendarvis State Historic Site

This historic site is located in Iowa County and is made up of several cabins that date back to the 19th century.

These cabins were built by the immigrants who came to mine lead in Mineral Point.

These buildings have been restored to their original state.

The Pendarvis site serves as a museum to preserve the history of early lead mining; it’s owned by the Wisconsin Historical Society.

10. Mount Horeb

Mount Horeb is a village located about 30 minutes to the west of Madison, in Dane County.

The early settlers were Norwegian and for this reason, this town bears a Scandinavian heritage.

The main street is decorated with life-size trolls that are carved from tree trunks.

This “Troll Capital of The World” has numerous antique shops, gift shops, and several specialty shops in the downtown area.

Other places that you must visit on your day trip to Mount Horeb are the Cave of the Mounds, the Onyx Ridge, and the Blue Mound State Park.

The town’s lighthouse is yet another highlight of a long weekend trip from Milwaukee.

There’s something for everyone in Racine: from fishing and kayaking to visiting the world-famous buildings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. 

Racine is not all about culture, although you may be forgiven for thinking that it is. It has appeal for all the senses.

And that of taste can be satisfied by a visit to the local bakery, Kringle , home to the official Wisconsin state pastry, which is basically an oval Danish Pastry.

There are several Danish bakeries in Racine where you can eat these delicious treats, but try the ones on offer at Kringles in the town.

Distance from Milwaukee: 58 minutes driving, 54 miles

Although there are many instances of such communities in the UK, there are few in the US.

Why visit Kohler? There’s a winery there that produces good wine, a golf course, and a design center where you can see designs of the bathroom fixtures and fittings produced at the Kohler factory.

This might not appeal to everyone, but it is one of the top sites to see, and worth stopping in during your day trip from Milwaukee.

Distance from Milwaukee: 2 hours 7 minutes, 116 miles

Green Bay is another of the tourist attractions near Milwaukee, WI which is 116 miles from the city.

Because I visited in winter, I think that Green Bay is one of the top winter day trips from Milwaukee, or if you have the time it was one of my favorite weekend road trips from Milwaukee.

You could plan to stay for a couple of days as it offers a chance to do water sports on Lake Michigan and if you have kids, there’s also an amusement park that they will enjoy.

There are also many opportunities for Wisconsin day trips from Green Bay.

12. Horicon

Distance from Milwaukee: 1 hour, 55.7 miles

Horicon is home to a marsh and wildlife center, but the city, which is close by. has year-round events for visitors and locals alike.

It’s an ideal place to have your base for your nature expeditions. 

Due to its exceptional beauty, the Horicon is ofter considered as one of the best places to vacation in Wisconsin .

Additionally, the area has served as a location for some of the best movies filmed in Wisconsin .

13. Horicon Wildlife Refuge and Horicon Marsh

The Horicon Wildlife Center and Horicon Marsh are 55 miles away from Milwaukee.

This beautiful wildlife refuge is one of the best scenic day trips from Milwaukee, especially for nature lovers, and families.

A longer visit to these places is one of the Milwaukee weekend getaway ideas I recommend.

Home to the largest freshwater cattail marsh in the United States, Horicon Marsh is the perfect day out if you want to spend a day in the great outdoors.

There is hiking, kayaking, geocaching, fishing, and birding, and in the winter visitors can enjoy sports like snowshoeing or cross country skiing.

Horicon ( not horizon ) is problematic to get right if you use a spell check. Its origins lie in the language of the Mohicans and it means either ‘ clear ’ or ‘ pure water .’

The Mohicans who lived in Wisconsin were descendants of those who were driven out of Schodack, which is near Albany, and moved to Stockbridge, Massachusetts.

They were later allotted a reservation in the 19th century and the Munsee tribe joined them.

These people became known as the Stockbridge band and some members would have hunted and fished in what is now the Horicon Wildlife Center and its marsh.

The wildlife refuge is full of great activities for solo travelers, couples, or the whole family. 

If you have kids, they will love learning about the Mohicans here and can even take part in some activities at the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center.

The history of the marsh goes back to prehistoric times, and there is even a woolly mammoth for kids to climb on and touch.

Your kids will be fascinated by the exhibits and the information supplied by the knowledgeable staff at the center.

14. Kettle Moraine State Forest

Distance from Milwaukee: 45 minutes, 44 miles

The Kettle Moraine State Forest is in southeastern Wisconsin.

There are several campgrounds, most of which close by the end of October. The only one open throughout the year is the Ottawa Lake campground which has 100 sites.

At this site, there are cabins for people with disabilities.

• There are various hiking trails in the forest of different levels of difficulty.
• The forest area has a long history, going right back to the Ice Age.
• You can explore the forest alone or join a group and have a guide.
• The Kettle Moraine scenic drive takes visitors through both sections of the forest and is highly recommended if you have time to explore.
• Horses and their riders are welcome.
• See the glacial landforms.
• You can bike along some of the trails.

Another of the day trips to take around Milwaukee is one to Fort Atkinson.

This spot is 58 miles from Milwaukee and has a number of things to do like exploring the Riverside resort and visiting the Dorothy Carnes Country Park and Rose Lake State Natural Area .

Distance from Milwaukee: 2 hours 19 minutes, 154 miles

If you’re looking for the best road trips from Milwaukee, you can’t go wrong with Door County as it’s the furthest day trip from Milwaukee on this list.

There is so much to do here whether you love the outdoors, hanging out in museums, or diving! Therefore, many combine it with a Door County cabin getaway.

Diving is one of the most unique things to do in Door County due to the high number of shipwrecks off the coast. Although you can see the wreckages from a boat, or even the shore in some cases, going diving is a once-in-a-lifetime experience here.

I also recommend taking a Segway to explore Fish Creek, a ferry to Washington Island, or relaxing on the beaches (they’re some of the best beaches in Wisconsin ).

If you want to see more of the countryside, check out the Door County wine trail.

This will let you see some of the region’s beautiful landscapes, AND go wine tasting at some of the best wineries in Door County !

Basically, if it wasn’t already obvious, this is not only one of my favorite Milwaukee day trips, but also one of my top getaways to vacation in Wisconsin !

Depending on the time of year you visit, you can also visit the vineyards or go cherry-picking.

But Door County is also one of the best winter day trips from Milwaukee if you enjoy winter activities like ice fishing or snowshoeing.

17. Sheboygan

Distance from Milwaukee: 56 minutes, 57.7 miles

I absolutely fell in love with Sheboygan’s Bookworm Gardens. It’s definitely one of the top things to do in Sheboygan, WI .

Although it’s designed for kids, if you love books and botanical gardens, you’ll also adore this place.

But the gardens do make Sheboygan one of the best Milwaukee day trips for families.

There are also several beautiful parks, especially Deland Park and Evergreen Park, to wander around and enjoy nature.

If you love to surf, you can’t miss Sheboygan! It is also known as the Freshwater Surf Capital of the World.

For those that decide to stay longer than one day, there are lots of great hotels in Sheboygan to choose from.

18. Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin

Distance from Milwaukee: 1 hour, 2 minutes, 60 miles

This is another wonderful option if you are considering both Milwaukee day trip ideas or weekend trips in Wisconsin .

Elkhart is the perfect romantic getaway!

But if you don’t have time for a full weekend, I still recommend a romantic afternoon picnic on Sandy Beach.

If you are able to be there for it, try to visit during the famous Road America Race, held every summer. The race dates back 50 years and is great fun!

19. Wisconsin Dells

Distance from Milwaukee: 1 hour, 55 minutes, 123 miles

There are so many amazing things to do in Wisconsin Dells that it’s easily one of the best weekend road trips from Milwaukee.

For starters, the Wisconsin Dells is home to  The Noah’s Ark , the largest waterpark in the United States . For hot summer days, there’s also the Mt. Olympus Water Park!

But if theme parks aren’t your thing, there’s still plenty to do in Wisconsin Dells.

You can have a relaxing day trip from Milwaukee hanging out at the spa or indoor jacuzzi!

If the weather is nice and you want to get outdoors, go for a walk through the forest or along the beach.

In fact, the hiking in Wisconsin Dells is some of the best in the state.

Wisconsin Dells is also a great starting point for a short Wisconsin road trip TO Milwaukee.

20. Six Flags Great America

Then Six Flags Great America is the day trip for you!

This place is definitely is for the kid in all of us and will have you feeling giddy like a kid for a day.

If you love crazy roller coasters you’ll be in heaven at Six Flags Great America.

They have the American Eagle, Goliath, the Viper, and more!

But if roller coasters aren’t your thing, there are plenty of other, more tame rides and even waterparks to keep you entertained all day!

21. Milwaukee Mile

Distance from Milwaukee: 12 minutes, 7 miles

Despite the name, this isn’t actually located in Milwaukee. Instead, the Milwaukee Mile is in West Allis, a suburb to the west of the city.

So if you are looking for some short road trips from Milwaukee just to get a break from the big city for a day, a visit to the Milwaukee Mile is a great option.

So what is the Milwaukee Mile?

It is a 1-mile oval race track where major events like NASCAR and Indy happen, and if a racing event is on, this is the place in Wisconsin to be!

This is the oldest operating speed track in the world and has hosted at least one event per year since 1903.

But the track isn’t all there is to see here. Milwaukee Mile is located on the site of the Wisconsin State Fair Park , which is a fairground that is open year-round.

The fairgrounds have been here since 1892, and are one of the best family day trips in Wisconsin.

22. Fond du Lac

Distance from Milwaukee: 1 hour, 59 miles

Fond du Lac, meaning “farthest end of the lake” in French, is perfect for scenic day trips from Milwaukee.

The city’s name is in reference to the fact that it is located at the bottom south end of Lake Winnebago – which of course is one of the top things to do while visiting for the day.

Cool off in this beautiful Wisconsin lake before enjoying a picnic at Lakeside Park – making it one of the best Wisconsin day trips for families and couples.

Don’t forget to admire the Fond du Lac Lighthouse while you’re here!

Families will absolutely love the Children’s Museum of Fond du Lac where kids can learn and play at the same time.

23. Indian Mounds and Trail Park

You’ll also get to enjoy the beautiful Milwaukee countryside along the way.

Located next to the Koshkonong Wildlife Area and Lake Koshkonong, the Indian Mounds – also called the Koshkonong Effigy Mounds – date all the way back to 650 and 1200 AD.

The mounds were erected by local Native American tribes in the shapes of animals and plants found in the area, which they wound have hunted and eaten.

There are over 70 mounds in the area, and you’ll find them in the shapes of birds, reptiles, fruits, and more!

24. Ten Chimneys 

Distance from Milwaukee: 35 minutes, 31 miles

Originally a summer home for Broadway legends Lynn Fontanne and Alfred Lunt, Ten Chimneys is now one of the most unique day trips near Milwaukee.

And yes, there ARE Ten Chimneys across the premises!

After opening its doors to the public in 2003, the house museum became a much loved tourist attraction – especially for those who love the arts.

Visitors can come for a tour of the house between May and November, and enjoy original furnishings, mementos from their travels, their art collection, and more.

This is one of the best things to do in Wisconsin in the fall if you are in this part of the state.

However, the Ten Chimneys Foundation also offers theater programs throughout the year in order to keep Lynn and Alfred’s love of the acting world alive.

25. Appleton

Distance from Milwaukee: 1 hour 41 minutes, 107 miles

Appleton is definitely one of the best day trips in Wisconsin for couples and families, and one of the most underrated cities in Wisconsin.

There are tons of great things to do in Appleton , no matter what you like to do. In fact, you could easily spend a whole weekend getaway here.

I absolutely love the Butterfly Gardens which houses over 200 different types of butterflies, and even a maze in the shape of a butterfly.

Visitors can even take home butterfly-friendly plants so that they might get winged visitors of their own.

Another great thing to do is walk along the Fox River and enjoy the stunning views. In the fall, the colors are exceptionally beautiful here.

To ensure this is one of the most relaxing and fun day trips for couples, make sure to pamper yourselves at one of the great Appleton spas.

My top recommendation is the Spa BenMarNicos at the CopperLeaf Hotel , which just so happens to be one of the best spa resorts in Wisconsin.

If you still need more to fill your day out, there is the Trout Museum of Art and the History Museum At The Castle – and so much more!

On a short trip from Milwaukee , you can relax in resort towns and water parks, go on a hike or sip a glass of wine. Here are the best day trips from the city.

1. Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Why go? To hike along the lake and then wind down at a resort spa.

The original inhabitants of Lake Geneva were the Potawatomi people, and later wealthy Chicagoans built houses around the lake after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. Now Lake Geneva has transformed into a popular resort town with plenty to do inside and outside. Seasonal activities include snowmobiling, skiing, swimming and ziplining. Visitors can also hike through Big Foot Beach State Park or the Lake Geneva Shore Path, which offers a scenic view of the water on one side and Gilded Age mansions on the other.

Visitors today can find the Cedarburg Art Museum , Cedarburg History Museum and plenty of festivals to experience, including Oktoberfest . 

A highlight of Cedarburg is the family-owned Cedar Creek Winery , which started as a wool mill in 1864 before being transformed into a winery three decades ago. Wine lovers can take a tour and taste the seasonal wines, which range from sweet, mulled red wine to a fruity strawberry blush. The combination of small-town charm, wine and festivals make Cedarburg a cute mini-escape from Milwaukee. 

How to get to Cedarburg: Cedarburg is just a 20-mile, 30-minute drive from downtown Milwaukee. Some Ozaukee County Express bus services from the Milwaukee County Transit System run to Cedarburg, but you’ll need a taxi to get you downtown or to the winery.

4. Baraboo, Wisconsin

Why go? To hike one of only 11 national scenic trails from the Ice Age.

Nicknamed the “Circus City” because of the Ringling Brothers’ presence here in the 1800s and 1900s, Baraboo is the home of the  Circus World Museum and Devil’s Lake State Park . Bringing in 3 million visitors every year, Devil’s Lake is Wisconsin’s most visited park and part of the 12,000-year-old Ice Age Trail . Glacial ice cascaded Wisconsin during the Ice Age, and the rocky remnants now span more than 9000 acres of Devil’s Lake with a beach view in the middle. 

Devil’s Lake is ideal for travelers who like moderate hikes, so bring water and sturdy shoes with you on this day trip. You can also rock climb on the glacier formations, such as the photoworthy Devil’s Doorway Trail. Other trails include the West Bluff Trail, East Bluff Trail and Balanced Rock Trail.

For something more low key, stop by the town's free year-round  Ochsner Park Zoo . Canada Lynx, capuchin monkeys, wolves and bears are just some of the 30 different animal species on display, along with a picture-worthy (and refreshing) stop in front of a playful lion water fountain.  

How to get to Devil’s Lake: Devil’s Lake is 120 miles from Milwaukee, and the drive takes two hours. There is no public transportation available.

5. Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

Why go? Because families will love waterpark hopping.

Home to more than 20 indoor and outdoor waterparks and three ski resorts, the Wisconsin Dells is a kitschy, family-friendly place to visit year-round. Mt. Olympus , Noah’s Ark and Kalahari Resort are three popular options for those wanting to dive into some water activities. If you’d rather stay on dry land, you can visit Ripley’s Believe It Or Not and mini-golf at Pirate’s Cove . When you’ve worked up an appetite, head to MACS (Macaroni and Cheese Shop), High Rock Cafe for classic American cuisine or The Del-Bar for cocktails and drinks.

How to get to Wisconsin Dells: The Wisconsin Dells is less than two hours from Milwaukee by car. Amtrak trains from downtown Milwaukee’s Intermodal Station to Wisconsin Dells Station take two hours. 

6. Sheboygan, Wisconsin

Why go? Because a trip to Wisconsin isn’t complete without locally made cheese curds and a brat.

Sheboygan lies on the western coast of Lake Michigan, and plenty of activities promise to keep visitors occupied, from Segway and group pedaling tours to sailing on the lake, surfing and cycling. Other activities include a day at Blue Harbor Resort , walking through Kohler-Andrae State Park or visiting the John Michael Kohler Arts Center . Families can relax in Bookworm Gardens , a botanical garden inspired by children’s books.

Sheboygan is known for its bratwurst and cheese, so grab a brat from Charcoal Inn South and cheese curds from 8th Street Ale Haus . For more local cheese, including the famous Gibbsville Cheese, check out the shops in Sheboygan. Visitors can try and buy cheese curds of all flavors including classic, cajun, jalapeño and dill, BBQ, cheddar, hot garlic and more.

7. Madison, Wisconsin

Why go? To experience the budding food and art scene of Wisconsin’s capital city. 

The capital of Wisconsin, Madison is located on Lake Michigan and has buildings designed by the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Visitors can stop by the State Capitol , with an interior of colorful murals and a white, 285ft-high dome. To explore more of Madison, check out the Olbrich Botanical Gardens or their farmer’s market and summer concert series for entertainment. 5 Madison Area Day Trips That Feel a World Away

There’s something about fall that makes you want to get in your car and go for a drive. Places filled with new-to-you routes bursting with fall colors, restaurants you haven’t tried and perhaps a farm stand along the way stacked with apples and pumpkins.

Luckily, Dane County is full of easy day trips that won’t require luggage, a packed family car or a plane ticket. Instead, you may discover a new favorite locale that’s less than an hour away from your home.

Here are five of our favorites — we think fall is the perfect time to visit these day-trip destinations.

Blue Mounds

With a population of less than 1,000, this small town leaves ample room to enjoy the great outdoors in all its glory. Blue Mound State Park is a local treasure, boasting the highest point in southern Wisconsin at 1,719 feet. You can imagine that at this height, you’ll be able to see fall colors for miles, making for a spectacular sight. Take in the colors from the ground on the stunning hiking trails.

Another Blue Mounds must-do: visit C ave of the Mounds . This natural landmark is more than a million years old and home to a six-foot fossil and 50-degree temperatures all year long. Cave tours are self-paced to physically distance groups and masks are required

Paoli is a nearby hamlet that’s brimming with charm. Dotted with sweet shops and restaurants like Paoli Schoolhouse American Bistro , you’ll also discover an unexpected biking opportunity. Called the Paoli Bike Loop , this 18.5-mile biking adventure will start on the Capital City Trail, wind through Paoli and then return on Verona’s Military Ridge State Trail. In the mood for a hike? Visit Prairie Moraine County Park , 160 acres full of Wisconsin’s glacial history.

Mount Horeb

Famous for its Norwegian heritage, you can’t miss the Scandinavian influences throughout Mount Horeb, like the “Trollway” leading into the village and punctuated with troll statues. Make a stop at Stewart Lake County Park — an outdoor gem with hiking, fishing and a playground — that happens to be Dane County’s first established park. Pop by the Duluth Trading Company flagship store for some outdoor gear, and grab the tastiest pub grub around at The Grumpy Troll.

Looking to make a weekend of it? Local accommodations like the comfortable and casual Grandstay Hotel & Suites and the Sunniva Inn , a Victorian bed and breakfast, will be there when you’re ready to hit the sack.

Known as America’s “Little Switzerland,” this hospitable and historic 175-year-old town is full of fall colors and rolling hills. Wander through town and search for all 16 life-size, painted cows, part of the New Glarus Cow Parade. (Here’s a map and location list to get you started!)

Follow an abandoned railroad line by foot or bike on the Sugar River State Trail . For an energy boost, stop by Fat Cat Coffee Works right along the trail for local roasts and eats.

Cap your day on the large lawn and covered porch of Bailey’s Run Vineyard with live music, a sizeable selection of sparkling, rosé, fruit, red and white wines and pizza to boot. You can pick it up curbside if you prefer.

And we couldn’t talk about New Glarus without mentioning the well-known New Glarus Brewing Company . While it’s currently closed to the public, you’ll still find many brews, like Spotted Cow and the seasonal Staghorn Octoberfest, at local restaurants.

Nestled along Lake Ripley, this under-the-radar town is home to world-famous pottery courtesy of local artisans. It’s also quite well-known for its tasty libations at Cambridge Winery , ideal for vino fans, and Dancing Goat Distillery for those who prefer sips with a little more “spirit” (its tours are currently closed, but it continues to produce its delicious whiskey, gin and more).

Drink in the fresh air at CamRock County Park , perfect for hiking and mountain biking in the warmer months, and cross-country skiing when the snow falls. Trade the woods for the downtown scene and explore lovely shops like Ruby Rose Gallery, saturated in color and artistic touches thanks to its crystal and gemstone finds.
