Saudi Arabia, a Growing Force in Golf, Seeks to Host Women’s Tennis

The kingdom shook up the PGA Tour with the creation of the LIV Golf series. Now it is pushing to secure a WTA Tour event.

By Matthew Futterman and Christopher Clarey

With the golf world already divided over Saudi Arabia’s emergence as a powerful force in the game, another major sport is contending with whether to do business with the kingdom.

This time it’s women’s tennis, which pulled out of China last year over concerns for the welfare of a player who accused a Chinese vice premier of sexual assault and later disappeared from sight.

Saudi Arabia has approached the Women’s Tennis Association about hosting an event, possibly the Tour Finals, but the WTA has not entertained the prospect of a tournament there in any formal fashion.

Steve Simon, chief executive of the WTA, declined to be interviewed for this article, but a spokeswoman, Amy Binder, confirmed Saudi Arabia’s interest, saying in a statement, “As a global organization, we are appreciative of inquiries received from anywhere in the world and we look seriously at what each opportunity may bring.”

In recent weeks, professional golf has been upended by the start of the LIV Golf Invitational series, which is bankrolled by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund and is paying $4 million prizes to tournament winners, along with participation fees reportedly as high as $200 million. Players like Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson who have left the PGA Tour and joined LIV Golf have been accused by other players of helping the kingdom to “sportswash” its human rights abuses, among them the 2018 government-sponsored killing of the Saudi journalist and dissident Jamal Khashoggi.

Saudi Arabia’s interest in tennis was first reported by The Telegraph in Britain.

The kingdom in recent years has invested heavily in sports and cultural events as part of a broader effort to project a new image around the world. The women’s tennis tour would be likely to face questions if it staged events in Saudi Arabia, where women’s rights have been curtailed and women gained the right to drive only in 2018. (Saudi Arabia has staged professional women’s golf events, hosting official Ladies European Tour stops each of the last three years.)

When the veteran Chinese player Peng Shuai disappeared last year, Simon demanded a full investigation of her allegations. Peng eventually reappeared, but when Chinese authorities did not allow Peng to meet independently with Simon and the WTA, Simon suspended all of the tour’s business in China, including its 10-year deal to hold the Tour Finals in Shenzen.

It was a significant financial blow to the WTA. China had paid a record $14 million in prize money in 2019, the first year of the agreement. That was double the amount of prize money from 2018, when the WTA Finals finished its five-year run in Singapore. The WTA relocated the finals last year to Guadalajara, Mexico, which offered only $5 million in prize money and a drastically reduced payment for the right to host the event.

WTA leaders have yet to announce the WTA Finals host city for 2022, and it remains a challenge, with the longer-term Shenzhen deal still in place, to find candidates interested in bidding for the Finals for just one year.

Saudi Arabia, with its appetite for international sport and huge financial resources, fits the profile of a potential bidder.

“They are interested in women’s sports, and they are interested in big events, so for sure,” said the Austrian businessman and tennis tournament promoter Peter-Michael Reichel.

The WTA has held events in Arab countries, including Qatar and Dubai, for years. But Saudi Arabia has yet to secure an official tour event in men’s or women’s tennis despite making increasingly serious offers.

Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic were set to play an exhibition there in December 2018 but were put under pressure to cancel it after the assassination of Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in October of that year. The exhibition match was eventually called off with Nadal citing an ankle injury.

A year later, an eight-man tennis exhibition was played in Riyadh in December 2019 ahead of the start of the regular men’s tennis season. The Diriyah Tennis Cup featured the leading ATP players Daniil Medvedev of Russia, Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland and John Isner of the United States and was played in a temporary 15,000-seat stadium. Prince Abdul Aziz bin Turki al-Faisal, chairman of the Saudi General Sports Authority, called hosting the event “another watershed moment for the kingdom” and hit the ceremonial first serve.

Reichel helped organize the 2019 exhibition through his company RBG. He said the exhibition had to be canceled in 2020 and 2021 because of the pandemic but that the plan was to revive the event later this year and include a women’s exhibition tournament.

“I’m very optimistic we can develop the tennis business there,” Reichel said in a telephone interview from London on Thursday.

Reichel said he believes it’s appropriate for sports to do business with Saudi Arabia, which he said has advanced as a society since he first went there on business in 1983.

“I was so positively surprised,” he said. “I was there many times. The international image is talking about the murder of Khashoggi and the driving licenses for women. This is what people know, and there is much more to be reported, I think.”

Reichel’s company owns and operates the WTA tournament in Linz, Austria, and the ATP tournament in Hamburg, Germany. He is a member of the WTA board of directors and has been one of those lobbying for Saudi Arabia to have an official tour event. But for now, those efforts have fallen short. The ATP recently rebuffed a proposal that Reichel was involved in to relocate an existing event to Saudi Arabia.

“Hopefully we can achieve it next year,” Reichel said.

One former WTA board member, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak for the board, said, “I think the WTA are being polite in recognizing the Saudi interest but from there to accept and go that direction, I don’t see it happening for a lot of reasons.”

Reichel acknowledged that some board members are resisting the idea of holding a women’s event in the kingdom because of the political sensitivities.

“They think with not going to China, we cannot go to Saudi,” he said. “I do not want to see this comparison, because China is a very specific thing with sexual assault for one of our players, and Saudi is a market which is opening up for women and trying to support women, which is a good sign. But I’m in the middle of these discussions with our tour, and I’m not sure we can achieve it in ’23, but in ’24 we’ll see.”

Reichel declined to comment when asked if the Saudis were trying to bid for this year’s WTA Tour Finals.

The question is what the Saudis might choose to do in tennis if their efforts to secure an official tour event continue to be rebuffed. Could they consider a LIV Golf equivalent, creating a rival tour by poaching superstar players?

Ari Fleischer, the communications consultant and former spokesman for President George W. Bush, who has worked closely with the Saudis to establish the golf tour, said earlier this week he was unaware of any effort to create a new tennis tour.

Reichel also said he had seen no indication that a new tour is in the works. He said he expected Saudi Arabia to work with the tennis tours to stage events.

“But if the tours are not willing to work together then I don’t know,” he said. Referring to the Saudis, he added, “For sure they have the money to make everything happen.”

This week sees the end of the Global Swings section of the season ahead of the Back 9 starting at next week's Betfred British Masters hosted by Sir Nick Faldo.

The Closing Swing comes to an end this week with last week's winner David Ravetto and the man he beat into second Jesper Svensson the only two players who can overhaul Robert MacIntyre at the top of the Rankings and take home the US$200,000 bonus.

The leading DP World Tour member (not otherwise exempt) will also qualify for the BMW PGA Championship , the third of five Rolex Series events this season.

But that is not all that is on offer on Sunday as a further $1million Bonus Pool will be shared among the leading ten players on the Race to Dubai who have played a minimum of eight ‘regular’ Global Swings events outside the Major Championships and Genesis Scottish Open.

Rasmus Højgaard became the first home winner of this event 12 months ago when he defeated Nacho Elvira in a six-hole play-off and he returns to defend his title, with identical twin brother Nicolai also in the field.

They lead a strong Danish contingent with event Chairman Thomas Bjørn also teeing it up alongside the likes of Søren Kjeldsen and Thorbjørn Olesen and rising stars Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and Jacob Skov Olesen at new venue Lübker Golf Resort.

If you have not done so already, you can sign up to play the official 2024 DP World Tour Fantasy game  here  and submit your six-man team before round one gets under way on Thursday.

The 2024 season-long winner will win a trip to the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai next year, enjoy a lesson with a DP World Tour professional and a round of golf on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates. For more information on this amazing prize and others, read  here .

Fantasy Insight : As it stands, Nicolai Højgaard is the most-picked player this week, featuring in a whopping 88% of teams, making him the most popular pick for any event so far this season, overtaking Cam Smith's 78.89% at the season-opening Fortinet Australian PGA Championship.

Countryman Olesen would hold that honour were it not for Højgaard, as he is in 85% of teams, with Austrian Bernd Wiesbgerger the next most popular player in a distant third (41%).

Fantasy Prize

Here, we pick out three players in action this week who are worth considering for your Fantasy team selections.

Favourite - Nicolai Højgaard

It is a tight-run thing this week in terms of favouritism, with many bookmakers unable to separate the Højgaards, but we are giving the edge to Nicolai - just.

The World Number 48 is the highest-ranked player in the field and arrives off the back of a productive first full season on the PGA TOUR, while also playing in two Rolex Series events, all four Majors and the Olympic Games.

Following his victory at the DP World Tour Championship, he achieved a top ten in his next Rolex Series start at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and finished second at the Farmers Insurance Open the following week.

The Ryder Cup winner finished seventh in Paris at the Olympics two weeks ago and as one of the few players in the field with some knowledge of the new venue, it is no surprise Fantasy players are selecting him in their droves this week.

Nicolai Højgaard

Form Horse - Bernd Wiesberger

Could Bernd be back?

If there is one thing Wiesberger has always been it is consistent and he has unsurprisingly brought that into the 2024 season, missing just one cut and recording only one other finish outside the top 25 in his first eight events.

A runner-up finish at the European Open in June suggested he may be ready to turn that good form into a win and he recorded a top ten in his next appearance at the KLM Open before making it three in six starts last time out the D+D REAL Czech Masters.

And while we may be at a different venue this week, the fact that two of his eight DP World Tour victories have come at this event has not gone unnoticed, certainly not by the 41% of players who have him in their team this week.

Wild card - Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen

Neergaard-Petersen is making just his tenth DP World Tour start but he has certainly made a splash in the game since turning professional after his graduation from the University of Oklahoma last year.

He recorded a top ten on debut at the BMW International Open and made the cut in each of the four other events he played in 2023, while also registering three top tens on the European Challenge Tour and making it to the Final Stage of the Qualifying School.

A maiden professional win at the Kolkata Challenge on the Challenge Tour in March of this year was followed by another at the UAE Challenge a month later as he recorded top tens in five consecutive events to top the Road to Mallorca Rankings.

He remains at the summit despite not having recorded a top ten since April but he will have a large and vociferous home crowd behind him this week and it is no surprise he features in 11% of teams.

FDPWT_Danish-Golf-Championship_OTW_16x9

Looking Back - D+D REAL Czech Masters

A huge tip of the cap to anyone who picked last week's winner David Ravetto as the Frenchman racked up an eye-watering 254 points. He arrived in the Czech Republic having made just six cuts in 16 DP World Tour events in 2024 but with a win on the European Challenge Tour and a top-three in the SDC Championship, which may have prompted his 636 picks (1.95%). And you really had a jump on your rivals if you were one of the five players (0.03%) who had him as your captain.

Our favourite Tom McKibbin did not make the weekend for just the third time this season but Wild Card Sami Välimäki (158 points) and Form Horse Romain Langasque (144 points) both finished in the top 40.

Tour Confidential: A FedEx Cup Playoffs fix, a new U.S. Amateur champ and more

Do the FedEx Cup Playoffs need a fix?

Getty Images

Check in  every week  for the unfiltered opinions of our writers and editors as they break down the hottest topics in the sport, and join the conversation by tweeting us at  @golf_com . This week we discuss the first leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, Matt Kuchar’s Wyndham explanation, the newest U.S. Amateur winner and more.

Scottie Scheffler, the season-long points leader of the FedEx Cup Playoffs, said the format of said playoffs is, well, silly: “Hypothetically, we get to East Lake and my neck flares up and it doesn’t heal the way it did at The Players, I finish 30th in the FedExCup because I had to withdraw from the last tournament? Is that really the season-long race? No.” Do you agree? But more importantly, what’s the fix?

James Colgan, news and features editor ( @jamescolgan26 ): There IS a fix, and it’s utterly obvious: A massive match-play event seeded and played like the NCAA Tournament! Host the event over three weeks at a handful of tournament sites (so as to stagger tee times to maximize TV view-ability). Bake-in 1-, 2- and 3-up advantages to start opening round matches for FedEx top 10 finishers and everyone else plays straight up. Host the elite eight through the finals in one long weekend (two 36-hole days.) To the winner go the spoils!

Jonathan Wall, managing equipment editor ( @jonathanrwall ): Personally, I’ve been out on the existing playoff format for a while. I miss the days of the Tour Championship closing out the season without the manufactured buildup of extra events no one seems to care about, save for the few guys at the top. I’d torpedo the current three-event format and go back to the old season-ending event. Lose the different starting scores and just see what happens when everyone starts on a level playing field. I don’t think golf fans need or care for the gimmicks. Match play is another option, but to Scottie’s point, the unpredictability means a guy who grinded for the No. 1 spot might get bounced by someone having a day.

Josh Sens, senior writer ( @JoshSens ) : I like Colgan’s idea, though I don’t think you’d need to start with scoring advantages. The seeding itself is designed to give the top players an easier path. After that, shut it down for a long offseason. There are too many events in professional golf already. Go dark for a few months. Give fans a chance to miss you.

Jose Luis Ballester after winning the U.S. Amateur

Ole! Newly crowned U.S. Amateur champ Jose Luis Ballester is just getting started

The top 50 for the BMW Championship is now set, which means those players are guaranteed spots into the uber-lucrative Signature Events for 2025. With how important these events have become — for money and FedEx Cup points — are you OK with that many players getting reserved spots? The Tour still has pathways for players to earn starts in them, but is this too generous to the top players while making life more difficult for the rest of the Tour?

Colgan : I think it comes down to our perception of fair. The PGA Tour did the best it could to be fair to players as far as earning entrance into the Signature Events, but the system is inherently favorable to the stars. The good news is that a system built around the stars makes the PGA Tour more like the remaining leagues in pro sports, which makes it a fairer product for the fans. I think the turnover is good. Good enough, at least. But I’m sure there’s somebody out there who disagrees.

Wall : I’m in agreement with Mr. Colgan: Turnover is good, but you still need the stars in the field. That’s who everyone is paying to see. Don’t like the system? Play better and become one of those top stars.

Sens : Making life too difficult for the other guys? They are competing for the right to play golf for multi-million dollar payouts. It’s supposed to be difficult. I have a hard time feeling like anyone out there is getting a raw deal.

Jordan Spieth tied for 68th at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, meaning he’ll miss the BMW Championship and won’t get automatic spots into those aforementioned Signature Events. He also will soon undergo surgery to repair a tendon in his left wrist. Spieth had just three top 10s this year and hasn’t won since the 2022 RBC Heritage. Do you see better days ahead for him? Or has his form proven that’s not so certain?

Colgan: Seven years is a really long time to go between relevant stretches of golf, and it’s been seven years since Jordan Spieth’s golf game was relevant for being good. I hope the surgery — and subsequent time away from golf — gives him the reset he’s needed since 2018. Right now, it’s hard to say that’s a given.

Wall : I’d argue no one is more electric than Spieth when he’s scrambling from all over the course and finding a way to contend. The problem is we’ve seen more scrambling than moments in contention. It’s clear he’s not right and has needed a reset for some time. The Tour could really use a healthy Spieth. Here’s hoping surgery brings a return to form.

Sens : I’m sure the surgery will help. But recoveries like this aren’t just physical. Spieth is going to need to regain that magic pixie dust he used to have around him. And that will mean regaining his confidence. Doing that, I suspect, will be the toughest part of all.

A week ago, Matt Kuchar made headlines at the season-ending Wyndham Championship when he decided not to finish the 72nd hole in darkness and finish by himself on Monday morning despite being eliminated from playoff contention and without a chance to win the tournament. On Monday Kuchar explained, saying he thought it would encourage playing partner Max Greyserman, who was one back of the lead, to do the same and try to force a playoff in the morning. Greyserman finished anyway, and Kuchar played alone, later saying “I know it stinks. Certainly I apologize to force everybody to come out here.” What’s your read on this? Was Kuchar trying to help, or was this just a bizarre miscalculation?

Colgan : What a hilariously bizarre situation. Could Kuchar not have discussed this with Greyserman while walking down the 18th fairway together before he elected to give up? Seems like he could have! No ill will from me, though. Weird move, but well within his rights.

Wall : It’s a weird move for sure. The most baffling bit is saying the decision was made to help his playing partner — a guy who opted to finish. Like Colgan, I’m trying to understand why he didn’t discuss this going down the fairway. If they did, and Greyserman passed on the opportunity, then why the heck didn’t Kuch play in and call it a week?! My head hurts trying to figure this one out.

Sens : Bizarre for sure but I have a hard time believing that Kuchar was simply trying to help. He was looking out for himself and doing what he thought would give him the best chance to squeeze a bit more money out of the purse.

The 2025 PGA Tour schedule dropped last week with few changes but one important revelation. When asked if the new schedule is an indication that there’s not going to be anything happening with LIV “at least through next year or ’26 or ’27,” commissioner Jay Monahan said, “I think that’s fair.” Is this bad news for the Tour? And what does it mean for golf’s future? Could things actually get worse?

Colgan : If by “is this bad news for the Tour?” you mean “is this undermining pro golf’s relevance in a way that makes the average sports fan care less about the sport?” … then, yes, it is bad news for the Tour. The good news is that the fault lines are so clearly defined (and LIV’s business is so obviously and totally unprofitable) that waiting things out might actually help the PGA Tour. (An observation: I know the Tour made the decision to merge interests with the Saudis, but I hate how every conversation is framed around the Tour’s incumbency. LIV’s product appealing to literally anyone would go a long way in motivating unity in pro golf, and yet they continue to be watched by audiences smaller than Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation without substantive competitive critique. Both sides are at fault!)

Wall : It’s bad news for pro golf, not just the PGA Tour. Spreading the talent across two tours waters down the product and makes it difficult for fans to get excited about anything other than the majors. Neither Tour has any juice, and it’s highly frustrating. The future doesn’t look rosey, let’s put it that way.

Sens : Wall said it well. The Masters can’t come soon enough.

Jose Luis Ballester won the 2024 U.S. Amateur on Sunday at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota, besting Noah Kent 2 up. What did you like about Ballester’s game, and has the professional success of last year’s champ, Nick Dunlap, proven some of these top-level amateurs are ready to win on Tour right away?

Colgan : Golf’s talent is not going away. The most interesting battlefield for LIV/PGA Tour relations is in the amateur game, and good for Ballester in boosting his bottom line.

Wall : It most definitely confirms the top-level amateurs no longer need a long runway to get acclimated to the pro game. Just look at the heater Luke Clanton has been on. Ballester is another uber-talented amateur who could very well win on Tour right now. The ASU pipeline continues.

Sens : It’s hard keeping up with the torrent of young talent in golf these days. Whether they are all ready to win immediately is another matter. Not just anyone can. But Ballester sure looked like a world beater this week. The guy’s wedge play and short game were Seve-worthy. If he keeps that up, we will see him lift more trophies before long.

Coco Gauff: American teenager seals fourth career WTA Tour title with victory in Washington

Coco Gauff completes a stellar tournament performance by overcoming fourth seed Maria Sakkari 6-2 6-3 in the final on Sunday in Washington; watch the US Open live on Sky Sports from Monday, August 28

Coco Gauff wins 2023 Washington Open (Associated Press)

Teenager Coco Gauff sealed a fourth career WTA Tour title - and second of the year - with a straight-sets win over Maria Sakkari in the final of the Washington Open.

Gauff capped off a resurgent week in the nation's capital to pick up her first WTA 500 title with a 6-2 6-3 success against Maria Sakkari.

The 19-year-old became the youngest champion in the event's history and the third American woman to win the singles title, following Jessica Pegula (2019) and Sloane Stephens (2015) and she also became the first teenager to win four or more titles since Caroline Wozniacki.

"I'm heading in the right direction," said the runner-up at the 2022 French Open, who did not lose a set all week and conceded just 19 total games across four matches to take home her second title of the season after winning in Auckland in January.

Gauff, who was beaten in the first round at Wimbledon, credited her work with new coach Pere Riba and Brad Gilbert for her improved serving and aggression throughout the week.

"It's our first tournament as a full team," Gauff said. "I'm glad that we were able to make this result. I know those who were with me at Wimbledon... it was really tough a couple of weeks ago. We were all feeling it. I'm glad I was able to bounce back."

She came out firing to build a comfortable 3-0 lead and was a point away from a double-break advantage, but 28-year-old Sakkari from Greece, who reached two Grand Slam semi-finals in 2021, closed the gap to 3-2 before Gauff won the last four games to take the opener.

The US Open on Sky Sports: Key questions ahead of the Grand Slam

Billie Jean King: Raducanu must learn not to listen to criticism

Despite breaking Gauff in the opening game Sakkari was unable to fend off the American's serve and vicious forehand as she generated 10 break points across the match and broke serve six times to land the biggest title of her career.

"Consistently this week, I have beaten that scouting report, and I think that's why the players tend to get a little more frustrated," Gauff said.

"Almost all week, every player that I played has been looking at their box, because I truly think that the plan that they had I was able to kind of combat. Today, she clearly had a plan, and I kind of just made that plan fizzle out a little bit."

Gauff and Sakkari now head to Montreal for the National Bank Open, which begins on Monday.

Wozniacki makes her return to tennis

Caroline Wozniacki last played in April 2022 but will return to tennis in early August

Former world No 1 Wozniacki will be back on the court for the first time in over three years when she faces Australia's Kimberly Birrell in Canada on Tuesday.

The first-round match will be Wozniacki's first since she retired after the 2020 Australian Open.

"Tennis-wise, I feel like I'm doing great in practice and it's going to be just fine when I'm out there," Wozniacki said. "So I'm not stressing. I'm not worried. It's just about getting more and more matches in and the more I play, the better I'm going to play. I hope that I'm going to be at my peak for the US Open.

"Realistically when you haven't been on tour and haven't played a match in so long, no matter how much you practice, how many practice sets you've done, you can never replicate being on a match court."

Ron (RMCHAMMER)

WGT VIRTUAL GOLF : amazing how realistic this site is and the courses match spot on in which course your playing. St. Andrew’s architectural design matches everything from bunkers positioning fairway and greens as if your playing the actual course. I was a avid Golfer and golf was my favorite hobby in life. I became disabled and was seriously depressed, till I was shown WGT GOLF APP. I can share with you that this is everything you’d do in real golf, from the top choices of clubs, drivers and balls. I have a Taylormade driver, Galloway clubs, Titelist balls. When hitting you need to adjust your shots according to the wind. Around the greens are so cool, you can chip, pitch, punch of hit a flop shot. Also on the greens the lines show the breaks and speed of greens and reading them is challenging, just as if you were playing the course. One last thing, I’ve played on 1800 days straight and the Xps are huge and when you join one of the hundreds of county clubs those XPs help your club win different tee & flag designs + helps your standing. Also a shout out to WGT CUSTOMER SERVICE, always welcomes your requests and any questions you have. Please let me know if you join I’d enjoy playing a H2H match with you.

consecutive play

WGT is an excellent golf game, part one of the best ones out there. The first time was back in 2013 when I reached 500 consecutive plays reset back to one and it did it two more times after that, not understand why but by the fourth time I was playing with someone and she told me I was in the lady that was playing with basically stated every time you reach 500 is going to reset back to one. I told her, that’s the reason why. But WT, I was able to send them a message or email and they did restore it. also ran across some problems during holidays that are set back to one and they would take care of it. But for the past seven years, I have worked with Dylan and she plays at least twice a day. I was at 2611 consecutive play so I sent an email and they restored it only took 2555. so I sent him another email stating that not where I was. Could they please restore it to 2611? So after that couple of days later, it reset back to one. if it was my fault, I truly understand but I’ve been very diligent because I enjoyed this game. So if some of you have that problem, they won’t restore what you work so hard. Thanks guys. So I emailed them again and so far they haven’t responded, but the response was we were no longer reinstating your consecutive. If it was my fault, I truly understand but I’ve been very diligent because I enjoyed this game. So if some of you have that problem, they won’t restore what you work so hard. Thanks guys.

High Quality but Too Much Inconsistency

This is the most realistic golf game there is for iOS. The courses look beautiful and the head-to-head competition makes it matter more. Others have discussed the expensive balls that run out of hits quickly. Unfortunately, the free basic ball hurts your game badly. However, my biggest issue is the inconsistency in the AI. It actually seems like it chooses the winner at times. You consider the wind speed and direction, choose the best club for the shot, and determine what percentage of the power meter you want to hit with, based on the club’s maximum distance. With practice, you gradually get better at this process and you become more and more accurate. Unfortunately, there are times where the game decides that, regardless of your skills and how you play, your ball is going somewhere like a bunker, water hazard, or just way too far or short. Several times, I have had a ball go 20-30 yards beyond the club’s maximum distance while hitting at less than full power into a 15-20mph wind. This often happens when there is a bunker or water hazard behind the green and the game apparently wants me to go there. Of course, putting me in the water means the expensive ball I purchased is now lost and I have to pay more if I want to get a new one. I think the most frustrating thing about these inconsistencies is that they seem to occur when I have been winning a lot and it feels like an attempt at keeping players relatively even.
