What to Know

  • Go to the URL in Safari. Tap Share > Add Bookmark or Add to Favorites . Accept the name, and select Save .
  • Edit and rearrange bookmarks by tapping the Bookmarks icon at the bottom of Safari and selecting Edit beneath the list.

This article explains how to add bookmarks on an iPhone or iPod Touch using the Safari browser app. We also discuss the difference between bookmarks and favorites. Instructions apply to devices with iOS 10 and later.

How to Add Bookmarks in Safari for iPhone

To add a bookmark to Safari on your iPhone or iPod Touch:

Open Safari and go to the URL you want to bookmark.

Tap the Share icon at the bottom of the page. It looks like a box with an arrow pointing up.

In the Share menu, tap Add Bookmark . Enter a new name, if you like, or tap Save to save the bookmark under its original name.

Alternatively, press and hold the Bookmark icon (it looks like an open book) beside the Share icon and select Add Bookmark . Select Save to save the bookmark.

How to Add Favorites to Safari on an iPhone

The process for adding favorites is similar:

Open Safari and go to the URL you want to add to your Favorites list.

In the Share menu, tap Add to Favorites . Enter a new name, if you like, or tap Save to save the URL under its original name.

Safari Bookmarks vs. Favorites

People often use the words bookmarks and favorites interchangeably. However, there is a distinction between the two folders in the Safari app on the iPhone and iPod.

In iOS, a favorite is one type of bookmark. Bookmarks on an iPhone or iPod Touch appear in a default primary folder in Safari, where all bookmarked pages are stored. Anything added to this folder is accessible through the Bookmarks icon in Safari so that you can access those saved links at any time.

Favorites is a folder stored within the Bookmarks folder. It's the first folder you see when you access Bookmarks. You don't get quicker access to favorites than to bookmarks on an iPhone or iPod Touch. However, on an iPad, the favorites appear as tabs at the top of every Safari page you open, so you're one tap away from any of them. You can add additional custom folders to either folder to organize your bookmarks on any iOS device.

It's also possible to add bookmark shortcuts to the iPhone or iPod Touch home screen so that you can instantly access websites without first opening Safari.

How to Edit and Arrange Bookmarks

You can edit and arrange your bookmarks in a few ways:

  • To view and organize folders and bookmarks, tap the Bookmark icon at the bottom of any Safari screen to display a list of folders, and then tap the Bookmark tab.
  • To edit folders, tap a folder to open it and display the individual URLs saved in the folder, then tap Edit .
  • To delete a folder or bookmark, tap the red minus next to the name.
  • To rearrange folders or bookmarks, drag the three-horizontal-line icon next to each entry up or down.
  • To add a folder, tap New Folder at the bottom of the editing screen.

If you already have the websites open, tap the "Tabs" button, and close any webpage that you don't want to bookmark.

Next, tap and hold the "Bookmarks" button and then select the "Add Bookmarks For X Tabs" option.

From the next page, give the new folder a name. By default, Safari will save the folder in Favorites, but you can tap the Favorites button to see all available locations.

iOS 17 Guide: How to Bookmark on Your iPhone Efficiently

To bookmark on your iPhone running iOS 17, you simply open the Safari browser, navigate to the website you want to bookmark, tap the share button, and select the “Add Bookmark” option. After you’ve named your bookmark and chosen where to save it, just tap “Save,” and voila! Your webpage is bookmarked for quick access in the future.

After bookmarking a site, you’ll be able to find it quickly without having to remember the URL or search for it again. It’ll be neatly stored in your Safari bookmarks, ready for you whenever you need it.

You can also check out this video about how to bookmark on iPhone for additional information.

Introduction

Let’s be real. We’ve all been down that rabbit hole on the internet where we find something gold, and then somehow, we lose it. Frustrating, right? But, hey, that’s where bookmarking swoops in to save the day, or rather, save that must-not-forget website. Bookmarking on your iPhone, especially with the latest iOS 17, is like having a personal librarian that’s got your back, keeping all those precious pages in tip-top order. Consider this: How many times have you stumbled upon a killer recipe or a life-hack article that you meant to try out later? Or perhaps, you’ve got a stack of online shops you swear by. Bookmarking is key to not losing these treasures in the endless sea of the internet.

For iPhone users, iOS 17 brings a seamless and user-friendly way to keep tabs on those essential web pages. Whether you’re a student, a professional, or just someone who loves to keep their digital life organized, knowing how to bookmark effectively on your iPhone is a game-changer. Bookmarking isn’t just about saving a page; it’s about having instant access to your curated information, anytime and anywhere.

How to Bookmark on iPhone with iOS 17

Before diving into the steps, it’s important to understand that this process will enable you to quickly access your favorite websites without having to type the URL each time.

Step 1: Open Safari and navigate to the desired webpage

Navigate to the website you want to bookmark in the Safari app on your iPhone.

Step 2: Tap on the share button

The share button looks like a square with an arrow pointing out from the top. It’s usually located at the bottom of the screen.

Finding the share button is a breeze once you’re familiar with Safari’s interface. It’s your gateway to many useful features, including bookmarking.

Step 3: Select “Add Bookmark” from the share menu

After tapping the share button, a menu will appear. From there, tap on “Add Bookmark” to initiate the bookmarking process.

Step 4: Edit the bookmark name and location

You’ll have the option to rename the bookmark and select where to save it. By default, it saves to the “Favorites” folder, but you can choose another folder or create a new one.

Being able to edit the bookmark name is super handy for recall, and choosing the right location helps keep your bookmarks organized.

Step 5: Tap “Save” to store the bookmark

Once you’ve made your edits, tap “Save” to add the bookmark to your selected folder.

With the bookmark now saved, it’s easy to retrieve the page without the fuss of searching for it again.

Additional Information

When it comes to bookmarking on iOS 17, there are a few extra nuggets of wisdom to keep in mind. First, customization is key. Don’t just stick with the default name of the bookmark; make it something memorable and meaningful to you. Also, consider organizing your bookmarks right from the get-go. Create separate folders for recipes, work research, or your favorite blogs to keep things tidy.

What’s more, if you’re a fan of minimalism, Safari’s “Favorites” section allows you to keep a clean slate with only your most-visited sites a tap away. This way, your screen isn’t cluttered, and you can enjoy a more focused browsing experience.

Lastly, remember that bookmarking on your iPhone with iOS 17 syncs across all your Apple devices, provided you’re using the same Apple ID. This ensures you have a seamless browsing experience whether you’re on your phone, tablet, or laptop.

  • Open Safari and navigate to the desired website.
  • Tap the share button.
  • Select “Add Bookmark” from the share menu.
  • Edit the bookmark name and choose a saving location.
  • Tap “Save” to store the bookmark.

How to add a bookmarklet in Mobile Safari

By Charlie Sorrel • 12:00 pm, September 5, 2017

  • Top stories

bookmarklet code

Bookmarklets are those little bookmarks you click to run mini “apps” in your web browser. You might have one that saves the current page to your Instapaper account, or one that launches a Google search focused only on the current site. Bookmarklets can translate highlighted text on a page, send something to your to-do list, or pretty much anything. On the Mac, installing a bookmarklet is easy. You just drag it to the bookmarks bar in Safari and you’re done. On iOS, though, it’s still a real pain.

So, bookmark this how-to (in the usual way), and have it handy for those times you need to install a bookmarklet on an iPhone or iPad.

The easiest way to install a bookmarklet on your iOS device is to use a Mac. If you use iCloud to sync bookmarks between your devices, then you just drag the bookmarklet (or regular bookmark) to Safari’s bookmark bar on the Mac, and wait a few moments for it to appear on your iPad or iPhone. If you don’t have a Mac handy, things are a little more involved.

Install a bookmarklet on iOS Mobile Safari

A bookmarklet contains Javascript. It is, in effect, a tiny computer program that is run whenever you click it. The Javascript itself is written out in regular text, and stored in in the URL field of a normal bookmark. When you click that bookmark, instead of just launching the URL of a webpage, it launches the Javascript. That’s the only difference. So, to save a bookmarklet, you have to somehow copy-and-paste the Javascript into the bookmark’s URL field. Thankfully, it’s easier than it sounds. For this example, we’ll add a bookmarklet that saves to your Instapaper account .

Step 1. Create a bookmark

create a bookmark

This part is easy. You just tap the Share Arrow on any web page, and give it a good name. “Save to Instapaper” is a good choice, or just “Instapaper” if you’re running out of space up there. Make sure to save it in your Favorites folder so it appears in the bookmarks bar on the iPad.

Step 2. Copy the Javascript to your clipboard

Instapaper makes it easy to copy the Javascript you need.

This should be provided on the web page. You have to tap the text box, then tap Select All , then tap Copy . It will look something like the screenshot above. Get the current code from the Instapaper page .

Step 3. Edit the bookmark you just created

edit bookmarklet

This is the fiddly part. Tap the little Bookmarks icon in Safari, then tap Edit. Then find the bookmark you just saved in step 1, the one you named “Save to Instapaper,” or similar. Tap that bookmark, and you’ll see the screen in the image below.

bookmarklet paste

The bit we’re interested is the second row, the one that begins with https://. Tap that, then tap the little x that appears to clear it. Then tap the now-empty field, and paste in the Javascript you copied in Step 2, then hit Done , and find your way back the browser.

Enjoy one-click action

That’s it. Anytime you want to save the current page to Instapaper, you just call up this bookmarklet and tap it. Some bookmarklets will require an extra step to get working — you need to be signed into your Instapaper account for this one to work, for example. Others, like the Google Translate bookmarklet, just work.

It’s still way easier to switch to a Mac to do this. Even iOS 11, with its system-wide drag-and-drop, doesn’t allow you to drag bookmarks to the bookmarks bar. Still, at least this method is fully-functional, despite being a bit of a pain.

6 Tips to Improve Your Safari Experience on iPhone

A ccessing the internet on an iPhone is made simple by Safari, Apple's native web browser; it does a great job of getting you started, but there are several other features that you can leverage to enhance your user experience.

Below, we'll list some valuable tips you can use to get the most out of Safari on your iPhone. So, let's get started.

1. Modify the Start Page

The start page is the first element you usually run into when launching Safari—it's the default screen if you've not used the browser before or didn't leave any tabs open after your last session. And the first step you can take in improving your Safari experience is to customize it.

Customizing the start page involves changing the background image and choosing the sections (listed below) you want the app to show. We've added descriptions to help you understand a little more about each section.

  • Favorites : This section will show all your favorite websites and bookmarks which have been added to the Favorites section on your iPhone.
  • Frequently Visited : This is a collection of searches and websites you've frequented in recent months. The information is said to be a mix from all your Apple devices if you've enabled iCloud.
  • Shared with You : It works by finding links, images, music, and more, sent within the Messages app, and brings them up in relevant applications. For example, if someone texted you a link via iMessage, you'll find it in this section of the start page.
  • Privacy Report : This section surfaces information on the trackers used by websites you've visited in the last 30 days and showcases when your iPhone—and other Apple devices—prevented them from profiling you.
  • Siri Suggestions : You can find website suggestions based on your recent browsing history, bookmarks, and open tabs within this section if you choose to use them.
  • Reading List : You can find the three latest additions to your Reading List in this section, with a Show All button available in case you want to view the other articles you've added to your read later list.
  • iCloud Tabs : This feature showcases up to four most recent tabs open on each Apple device you own with iCloud enabled for Safari.

To begin customizing your Safari's start page, follow the steps listed below:

  • Scroll down to the bottom of the Safari start page and tap Edit.
  • Now, enable the desired sections using the toggles or reorder them by pressing (and dragging) the three horizontal lines.

If you want to experience Apple's Continuity feature , toggle on Use Start Page on All Devices at the top of the edit menu. This will ensure your start page is in sync across all devices connected to your iCloud account.

2. Create Tab Groups in Safari

The next step in improving Safari on iPhone is to create and use Tab Groups . The feature lets you bring order and control to tabs by allowing you to group similar ones—or those you often use together—into folders. Ideally, you can use the feature to separate search results and websites related to work from those you open during casual browsing.

To create a Tab Group, follow the steps listed below:

  • View all your tabs by tapping the Tab button in the bottom-right corner.
  • Now, tap the text box at the bottom of the screen—it mentions the number of tabs open.
  • In the menu that appears, tap New Empty Tab Group or the second option, New Tab Group with X Tabs .
  • Name the Tab Group according to your liking and hit Save .

The X in the second option will vary based on the number of tabs open when creating a Tab Group.

3. Use Safari Extensions

Like Chrome, you can install Safari extensions to improve your browsing experience. For those unaware, these are applications built for web browsers that bring additional functionality and make your life easier.

For example, you can install applications that scour the web for coupon codes and bring them up when you're making a purchase or add ones that help edit written content to ensure you aren't making silly errors.

Adding extensions to Safari on an iPhone is a bit different compared to installing and removing extensions in Safari on a Mac . To do this, follow the steps listed below:

  • Go to Settings > Safari on your iOS device.
  • On the next screen, find Extensions under the General subsection and tap on it.
  • You'll now see a list of extensions available. In case you see no options, tap More Extensions to visit the Safari Extensions store.

You may sometimes see options without having installed an extension before; these are present due to an application—that offers Safari extensions—installed on your iPhone from before.

Once you've installed an extension, activate it in Settings using the same steps above and then do the following:

  • Open Safari and tap the AA button in the address bar.
  • Now, tap Manage Extensions and select the extension you want to activate.

4. Choose Websites to Automatically Use Reader

Reader in Safari is a nifty add-on that lets you read content from a website with minimal distractions and no ads. It makes the experience quite simple and offers options like changing the page color, font, and font size.

Activating Reader is quite simple; tap the AA button in the address bar when you're on a supported webpage and choose Show Reader . However, if you frequently visit a specific website, you can configure Safari to load all its webpages in Reader. Here's what you need to do:

  • Open the desired website and tap the AA button.
  • In the context menu that appears, tap Website Settings .
  • Now, toggle on Use Reader Automatically . Each supported webpage will now open in Reader, making it easier to read the content.

5. Set Tabs to Open in Background

Despite it being easy to access AI tools like ChatGPT on mobile for learning about things, if you prefer getting deep into the weeds when doing research, you may want to view many of the following webpages in new tabs.

By default, opening a new tab via a hyperlink will leave the old tab behind and move you to the new tab. While this behavior is fine, it can feel like a chore if you'd like to open multiple results from a search page.

Fortunately, you can change this behavior. Here's what you need to do:

  • Open the Settings app, and scroll down to the Safari option.
  • On this page, under the Tabs subsection, tap on Open Links .
  • Now, choose In Background .

6. Configure Safari to Automatically Close Tabs

Lastly, while the ability to open many tabs in Safari is a boon, knowing ways to organize your browser and keeping it clutter-free can help you focus better and increase productivity. And keeping only a few tabs open can be a part of this regime.

Safari on iPhone also helps with this, with the ability to automatically close tabs after a set period of time; we've detailed the steps to activate the feature below:

  • On this page, under the Tabs subsection, tap on Close Tabs .
  • Now, choose from the available options: After One Day , After One Week , or After One Month .

Become a Safari Power User With These Changes

Each customization method listed above will help improve your Safari experience, be it with a new background image that makes the app feel more personal or a setting that keeps it clutter-free.

Overall, Safari is an excellent browser that can be made even better for power users with a few changes. And some of Apple's exclusive features make a strong case for the app, especially if you're a Mac user.

6 Tips to Improve Your Safari Experience on iPhone

Microsoft really wants you to start using its Edge web browser

  • Microsoft is adding an AI feature to its Edge web browser in an apparent bid to win more users.
  • Rival web browsers Chrome and Safari are far more popular than Edge, StatCounter data shows.
  • Google added AI features for its browser in January, and Apple is rumored to roll some out too.

Insider Today

Microsoft might be the most valuable listed company, but it's failed to get very many people to abandon Chrome or Safari in favor of its own web browser.

However, Edge may become a little more enticing with the addition of a new AI feature.

Microsoft plans to launch an "AI theme generator" next month that will let users create their own browser themes by using a text prompter to create images.

Related stories

"Applying the theme includes setting the generated image on the Edge new tab page, and applying the image's dominant color to the browser frame," according to an update to its 365 road map.

Microsoft Edge launched in 2015 to rival web browsers Google Chrome and Apple's Safari. It was intended to replace Internet Explorer, which was retired in 2022 .

Chrome is the web browser for most internet users. Data from StatCounter shows the Google offering had a global market share of more than 65% in April. Safari had more than 18%, with Edge lagging behind on about 5%.

In January, Google announced three new generative AI features for Chrome. They include a browser theme generator, a tab organizer that suggests and creates tab groups based on a user's open tabs, and a tool called "Help Me Write" to assist users in writing pieces such as reviews.

According to Apple Insider, Apple is gearing up to launch an AI browser assistant called "Intelligent Search" that can automatically generate summaries of web pages by identifying subjects and key phrases. It's expected to be announced with the rollout of its latest iOS 18 update at its Worldwide Developers Conference next month.

Microsoft didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider, made outside normal working hours.

Remove or delete apps from iPhone

You can easily remove or delete apps from your iPhone. If you change your mind, you can download the apps again later (if they’re still available in the App Store).

Do any of the following:

Remove an app from the Home Screen: Touch and hold the app on the Home Screen, tap Remove App, then tap Remove from Home Screen to keep it in App Library, or tap Delete App to delete it from iPhone.

Delete an app from App Library and Home Screen: Touch and hold the app in App Library, tap Delete App, then tap Delete. (See Find your apps in App Library .)

If you change your mind, you can redownload apps you’ve removed.

In addition to removing third-party apps from the Home Screen, you can remove the following built-in Apple apps that came with your iPhone:

Contacts (Contact information remains available through Phone, Messages, Mail, FaceTime, and other apps. To remove a contact, you must restore Contacts.)

FaceTime (In iOS 17.4 or later, if you remove the FaceTime app from your iPhone, or if you removed it in an earlier version of iOS before updating to iOS 17.4, you won’t be able to make or receive FaceTime calls or join SharePlay sessions on your iPhone unless you redownload the app . See Make FaceTime calls on iPhone .)

Find My (Removing this app doesn’t turn off location sharing or Find My for your device or items—it just removes the ability to view locations in the Find My app on that device.)

iTunes Store

Voice Memos

Wallet (Removing this app doesn’t delete cards and passes you stored in iCloud.)

Note: When you remove a built-in app from your Home Screen, you also remove any related user data and configuration files. Removing built-in apps from your Home Screen can also affect other system functionality.
