When you’re expecting, everyone tells you to take a trip with your spouse while it’s still “just the two of you.” My husband and I wanted to do a Babymoon, and between both of our demanding work schedules, and preparing for the arrival of a new family member, we didn’t have the time we needed to plan our “Babymoon.” I enlisted Meg’s help at Travel to Paradise because of all the travel agents I spoke with, Meg asked me the most questions and really gathered insights on what my husband and I were looking for in this trip. Expedia is a familiar website that offers an easy way to book a Hawaiian vacation package. What’s nice about using Expedia is that if you’re not sure which island you want to go to, you can just search “Hawaii” without having to narrow it down to a specific location.

Expedia also has great filtering and sorting options as well as a map so you can easily search by location. In addition, you’ll be able to earn OneKeyCash  on eligible packages, making this a great option when you don’t have loyalty to a specific hotel brand.

Hot Tip: If you book a property that’s part of a hotel brand that offers a loyalty program (like Hilton, Hyatt, Marriott, etc.) you won’t earn hotel loyalty points when you book through a third-party website like Expedia. However, you can earn rewards from your booking site if it has its own loyalty program like One Key (Expedia, Hotels.com, and Vrbo) or Orbitz Orbucks.

Apple Vacations specializes in package deals in popular spots like Mexico, the Caribbean, and Hawaii. In addition to booking a package that includes a flight and hotel, you can add a rental car and trip protection. On top of that, you can add Apple Extras to your trip that can include things like a lei greeting or a sightseeing excursion.

While Apple Vacations offers a good selection of flights, you’ll be able to see additional options after creating an account and logging in.

Bottom Line: While you can add trip protection through Apple Vacations, you may want to hold a credit card with travel insurance . If you still feel like you need additional coverage, check out our guide to travel insurance before making a purchase.

CheapTickets is an online travel agency powered by Expedia, but the pricing you’ll see can be different from Expedia, so it’s worth checking out separately.

CheapTickets is easy to use and has great sorting and filtering options as well as a nice map feature you can use to find a hotel by location. This is especially handy in a popular vacation spot like Hawaii where your hotel’s location is very important.

Orbitz is a great website for booking vacation packages because it has its own loyalty program. With Orbitz Rewards , you’ll earn Orbucks when you book a Hawaiian vacation which you can then use to reduce the cost of your next hotel stay. You’ll earn 1% back in Orbucks on vacation packages, but if you book through the Orbitz app, you can earn 2%!

You’ll be able to add extras like airport transportation, trip protection, and even tours or activities during checkout.

Momondo  acts as a metasearch engine that shows you deals from other sites in 1 place. This type of website can be a huge time saver when you’re not really sure where to start.

From the home page, just select Packages from the search options, then you’ll be able to specify your travel dates and destination. Your search results will clearly display which website the listed deal is from. You can see additional websites and flight options by clicking See all right under the price.

Once you find a deal you like, click View Deal and you’ll be transferred to a different website to complete your booking.

Hawaii.com is a good place to search for vacation packages when you know the exact dates you want to travel. You can book a package consisting of a hotel, flight, and even a rental car, but the search starts with flights, so your dates need to be set in order to search . You can’t just search for the best deals like you can on some other sites.

While the search process starts a little different on Hawaii.com, it’s easy to change your flight and add a hotel or rental car once you get started.

You may notice that the vacation packages page states that packages are for air, car rental, and hotel for 6 to 8 days. Don’t let that deter you, though. We found that you could search for any combination of hotels, flights, and cars for any duration, so you’re not as limited as you may initially think.

Southwest Airlines began flights to Hawaii a few years ago and it’s now a popular way to fly to the islands. However, Southwest flights won’t show up on any third-party websites, so if you want to fly Southwest you’ll have to search for a flight and hotel separately — or book through Southwest Vacations .

The great thing about booking through Southwest Vacations is that you can earn Southwest Rapid Rewards points for your package purchase ! The not-so-great thing is that you’re limited to the few routes that Southwest flies between Hawaii and the continental U.S. That means you may need to book an extra flight to get to your Southwest departure city. Even with those restrictions, fans of Southwest — and especially Southwest Companion Pass holders — should consider booking through Southwest Vacations for their Hawaiian holiday.

Bottom Line: You’ll earn Rapid Rewards points on any vacation package booked through Southwest Vacations. You can’t, however, book a Southwest Vacations package with points. 

Booking a Hawaii vacation package on Priceline is a straightforward and easy process. You can search for any combination of flights, hotels, and cars under the Bundle + Save search tab on the home page.

After providing your travel details, you’ll see a long list of search results that will give you a lot of information about the property, such as ratings and amenities, as well as alerts about package-deal savings or Priceline VIP pricing.

Priceline VIP is a free loyalty program that comes with discounts, a best rate guarantee, and Express Deal coupons. While these perks are available as soon as you join, the discounts get bigger and better as you reach new status tiers within the program.

It may come as no surprise that Hawaii’s flag air carrier is a good place to search for vacation packages to that state. Hawaiian Airlines Vacations offer packages that include any combination of flights, hotels, and rental cars for the ultimate in flexibility.

If you scroll down past the search box, you may be able to find a discount code that could save you money!

The hotel search function is powered by Expedia, so all of the filtering and sorting options should look familiar. The only downside to Hawaiian Airlines Vacations is that the flight options are limited since it just includes 1 airline (and its limited partners) that don’t offer flights to every part of the country.

Hot Tip: You won’t be able to redeem Hawaiian Airlines HawaiianMiles for a vacation package, however, you can still earn miles on the flight portion of your package.

Vacations by Marriott is a great place to search for a Hawaii vacation package if you’re a fan of Marriott hotels and resorts . Don’t think that you’re limited to just the hotel portion of your trip — you can book flights and a rental car through Vacations by Marriott, too.

The search capabilities are powered by Expedia, so you’ll have the same great functions of that site when using Vacations by Marriott.

The obvious limitation to this site is that you’ll only find Marriott properties.

Hot Tip: When searching for a Hawaii vacation package, don’t get discouraged if your search results come back empty. We found that many sites only showed packages from select cities on the West Coast, such as Los Angeles. If you find a good deal from a city that’s not your hometown, you can usually purchase an inexpensive flight to get you where you need to be to take advantage of the package deal.

We searched for a week-long hotel stay at 2 different hotels plus flights from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to see how these websites stacked up.

*Prices are for the lowest category room for 2 people and do not include resort fees which are collected by the hotel at check-in or checkout.

As you can see from these examples, prices are all over the map. For the Maui package deal (hotel #1), CheapTickets was the cheapest by $167. For the Oahu package deal (hotel #2), Apple Vacations and Momondo (which brought me to Apple Vacations) had the best price by a whopping $778!

In both searches, Hawaii.com had the most expensive price by far.

Who doesn’t want to go to Hawaii on vacation? Thankfully, there are lots of package deals out there to help you make your dream vacation a reality while saving you some money in the process.

When searching for a Hawaii vacation package, keep in mind that each site may offer different pricing and terms. It’s important to check a few sites and read everything carefully before booking.

Useful information for planning your vacation in Hawaii

Hawaiian and English are the official languages of Hawaii. You may also hear Hawaiian Creole English spoken, which is often called ‘Pidgin’ locally.

The currency of Hawaii is the US dollar (US$). All major credit cards are widely accepted, and you’ll find ATMs in most towns.

In Hawaii, you should try traditional dishes such as poke (marinated fish), manapua (steamed pork buns), and Huli-Huli chicken (chicken marinated in a soy glaze). Hawaiian food is influenced by traditions from Polynesia, China, and Japan and you’ll find everything from fish tacos to poi (mashed taro), and kālua pua’a (slow roasted pork) to haupia (coconut cream with arrowroot) on local menus.

Fresh juices, pineapple iced tea, and lots of fruity cocktails are also on offer.

Tips of between 15-20% are expected for all bar and restaurant services and about the same percentage should be applied to taxi fares.

Hawaii offers powder-soft beaches, big surf, lush rainforests, active volcanoes, and abundant marine life. While here, you could hike through forested gorges, go whale watching, or see hot lava pour into the sea. You could take a helicopter ride over a smouldering volcano, hike along coastal trails, snorkel with manta rays at night , or take on some of the biggest waves in the world. You can also take in the poignant history of Pearl Harbor , go stargazing at Mauna Kea’s observatory or visit smaller islands to learn about traditional culture in small villages.

Hawaii offers a great range of places to stay, from sleek beachfront resorts with a choice of pools, restaurants, and water sports to more intimate guesthouses with local character.

Many hotels offer cultural activities such as lei-making and ukulele playing, or traditional feasts with music and dance. For five-star comfort in a secluded location, you could stay in a cliff-top suite overlooking the ocean or a beachfront villa or cottage. Hawaii has six main islands, but most visitors go to Oʻahu, the island of Hawaiʻi, or Maui. Oʻahu is the most visited island, home to Hawaii’s capital, Honolulu, as well as the surfing hotspot of Waikīkī Beach, volcanic tuff cones, botanical gardens, and Pearl Harbor.

On the island of Hawaii , you can laze on soft sand beaches or visit coffee plantations in the west and explore an active volcanic landscape with hissing craters and smoking fumaroles in the east.

For tropical rainforest, scenic drives, black-sand beaches, and pristine reefs, Maui offers adventure and relaxation in equal measure. On Kauaʻi , you could sail along the dramatic Nā Pali coastline, while Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi offer a glimpse of traditional Hawaiian life and Polynesian culture.

Respecting local culture and customs, protecting the environment, and supporting local businesses are the best ways to travel responsibly in Hawaii. Hawaii’s magnificent landscapes are a major draw, but with high visitor numbers even small actions can have a negative impact.

When out hiking stick to the trails and follow the signs. This protects you from danger, respects ancestral lands, and ensures habitats around the trails are left undisturbed.

Dispose of your litter properly and consider actively helping by joining a beach clean-up, for example. Don’t feed wildlife and actively seek out insect repellent and sunscreen that won’t harm wildlife or marine life.

The best way of getting around Hawaii is to combine car journeys with inter-island flights or boat trips. It’s easy to hire a car on the larger islands to drive between sights, but if you want to see more than one island you’ll need to fly or take an inter-island cruise.

US citizens don’t need a visa for Hawaii.

Your doctor is best placed to give vaccine advice for Hawaii. You should ensure you’re up to date with the recommended vaccinations for your home country.

US citizens don’t need a passport to visit Hawaii, just valid government photo ID.

In Hawaii, you should be aware of local customs such as aloha, which is a way of life rather than just a greeting. Aloha means welcoming people, being friendly, and treating people with respect. This can mean anything from greeting people with a smile and taking the time to talk to them to driving without aggression.

Hawaiian customs also respect the land and wildlife, so don’t take rocks off beaches, hike off-trail, or feed wildlife. Hawaiian lei (flower garlands) are considered a sign of love and respect, so don’t throw them away when they wilt. Instead, take them apart and put any natural elements back into nature and then dispose of any plastic elements properly.

Hawaiian culture is all about respect for people, the land, and wildlife. Hawaiians like to ‘talk story’, to stop and have a conversation, so slow down and chat to people. Don’t speed on the roads or honk your horn while driving, and don’t refer to the continental US as the mainland. To Hawaiians, the Island of Hawaii is the mainland. Call places by the Hawaiian names, and if you’re invited to someone’s house, bring a small gift or some food and remove your shoes before entering.

My vacation was awesome. This is the first time I used your site, and there is always a bit of trepidation when using on-line services. Every aspect of our reservation was perfect, plus there was the little extra of a luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center that we were unaware of. The service we received from the agent (Patti) was second to none. We cancelled our Hotels.com reservation as your pricing, and more importantly service, was better by far. We definitely plan on booking with you again next year!

We had a wonderful time at the Kanapali Shores. Everything was so nice. The staff was good, the restaurant was delicious and we loved the grounds. Our room was a garden view one bedroom and we enjoyed sitting on our spacious balcony and looking at our lovely view. The beach is small but if you walked down just a little the beach was much larger. There is a supermarket right across the street and in walking distance a farmer's market. We would definitely stay there again.

We are very satisfied with Great Hawaii vacations. Patti was very helpful in arranging for our accommodations at the Mana Kai Maui, did the research on airfare and booked our flights and also gave us very good advice for activities while in Maui. Patti was very responsive to my inquiries, usually responding the same day, even considering the 5-hour difference in time zones. I would highly recommend Great Hawaii vacations to others who are considering vacationing in Hawaii.

Very much enjoyed our recent stay at Maui Kameole. (Feb. 10 - 21st, 2011). From the booking process, through check-out, we encountered no problems at all. Very pleasant staff to work with, and very accomodating. As you know, there were actually two reservations. About a week before, we did inquire as to whether the assigned units would be close in proximity. We were next door to each other, which worked out great. Accomodations in both units were good. K205 was a little more updated in decor than K204, but we were not there to judge the interior!. The grounds of Maui Kameole, the pool, the bar-b-que area, access to parking, etc. were all very good. We would definately use Great Hawaii Vacation again, and would also stay at the Maui Kameole again without hesitation. Thanks for all you do/all you did!

I wanted to give you some feedback about my trip to maui as you requested. Very wonderful. The Sheraton Maui was a good choice and lovely spot. Just a note to let you know our Hawaii trip was fantastic! The resort you recommended for us was perfect. The condo was spotless and beautiful, and Napili Point is just the speed for us--small and relaxed, quiet, and family-oriented. The proximity to the beach and being on the beautiful bay made sunning and snorkeling convenient and fun. Being close to Kapalua made it easy for Ken to golf his "dream round." And since we were there right before the Tournament of Champions, we actually got to see some of the PGA pros practicing! Hawaii Island is the largest of the islands and sits at the southernmost part of the chain. What to do in Hawaii? Locals weigh in on if these popular spots are worth the hype

There’s one road going east from Honolulu to popular Oahu beaches like Makapuu and Waimanalo, and on a sunny Saturday morning between Christmas and New Year’s, it was jam-packed. 

One particular slowdown happens right before Hanauma Bay. The entrance to the popular snorkeling spot is blocked with a sign that says the parking lot is full. Workers turn the cars of hopeful snorkelers around and people are walking up the hill in the hot sun with their beach chairs strapped to their backs after parking in the nearby neighborhood. 

Although the holiday week drew more crowds than typical, it’s not an unusual sight for the well-known tourist attraction. 

Hanauma Bay continues to top Hawaii travel activity lists for its calm waters and easily spotted marine life, like sea turtles and tropical fish. But for some travelers, it can seem like a headache to wake up early before the parking lot is full, often by 9 a.m. 

Even past the bay, the scenic road’s multiple lookout points are overflowing with rental cars and people snapping photos.

For most, a Hawaiian vacation itinerary feels incomplete without a few must-dos: Witness the islands’ natural beauty; go to a luau; snorkel with marine life; and, obviously, soak up the sun at the beach as much as possible. 

Unfortunately, there’s a big chance travelers won’t even experience the real Hawaii on their trip if they do this. 

“People love Hawaii, but they just don’t know Hawaii,” Evan Mokuahi Hayes, a Native Hawaiian who owns Hoomau Oahu Tours, which seeks to give visitors deeper and more history-driven tours of Oahu, told USA TODAY. “They love this place, but they don’t know our history.”

In Spring 2023, 67% of 1,960 Hawaii residents agreed an “authentic presentation of Hawaiian language and culture is important.” Although the industry is heading in that direction, it’s still challenging for visitors to distinguish what's overrated and just seeking out tourist dollars, and what’s actually going to teach them more about Hawaiian history and culture. 

While travelers can research what to do, sometimes inside knowledge is the right guide. USA TODAY spoke with Native Hawaiians who work in the tourism industry on whether or not the most popular tourist attractions in the island chain are worth the hype and how to get the most out of their Hawaiian visit. 

1. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park 

Definitely go for its sacred history and cultural significance.

As one of the most popular national parks in the U.S., Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is worth facing crowds for – and not just for marveling at the dramatic, ever-changing landscape (or the chance to see fiery lava.) 

“It’s a sacred treasure trove of history, culture and adventure, and it’s the place I go to pay homage to Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire and volcanoes,” Kaiulani Blankenfeld, Director of Hawaiian Culture at Hawaii Island’s Fairmont Orchid, told USA TODAY.

For Hawaiians, the over 355,000-acre park is home to Pele, making it an incredibly sacred place, from the lava fields themselves to high-elevation forests. 

The Oahu-born and raised kumu hula (hula master teacher) has danced and chanted at Halemaumau, located inside Kilauea’s caldera, and “felt my thoughts, spirit and body shift into another realm.” Travelers shouldn’t rush their visit; they should take it all in and be respectful of any signage. 

2. Diamond Head State Monument

Go for the sacred history, but there are other hikes with great views too. 

Diamond Head, or Leahi as it is known in Hawaiian, is arguably the most iconic Honolulu tourist attraction. The 0.8-mile-long hike up to the top of the crater is well-maintained, and the top offers a panoramic view of the southern shoreline. Before the park’s reservation system in May 2022 ($5 per person over 5 years old to enter and $10 per car), it wasn’t unusual to be hiking the popular trail in a slow, single-file line. 

Even now, it’s not exactly the most tranquil hike on the island.

Travelers who do go, shouldn’t just admire the views but research how sacred the 300,000-year-old crater is to Hawaiians, Hayes said, which Hoomau focuses on during its tours. Before its use as a military bunk, it was a place of worship to Native Hawaiians, and where Maui – who people may know from Disney’s “Moana” – caught the sun. 

For fewer crowds, Blankenfeld recommends the Makapuu Point Lighthouse Trail on the island's eastern side. “It offers stunning views of Oahu's southeastern coastline, including Koko Head and Koko Crater.” It’s free and also a great place to spot humpback whales during winter.

3. Hanauma Bay

Worth making a reservation for a safe snorkeling experience.

Tucked into a volcanic cove on Oahu so the waters are always calm, Hanauma Bay has been the island’s most popular snorkeling destination for decades. During the pandemic, the bay closed so marine life could rest from human traffic and restore itself. After a few months, the water was clearer, and more fish and coral growth was recorded. 

Although nonresidents have to book and pay for a timeslot ($25 per person plus service fees and $3 per car) to enter, Hayes said it’s still the best place for tourists to snorkel safely, especially for those with kids (who, if 12 and under are free to enter.)

“I think Hanauma Bay is perfectly set up for tourists,” he said. “They have people there who close the parking lot down, and there’s restrooms and trash cans.” 

He added that tourists who aren’t familiar with the ocean can often be reckless and jump in the water anywhere without realizing the almighty power of tides, swells and currents, which can end dangerously . 

To avoid the hectic parking situation, there’s a shuttle service to and from Waikiki for $49 per person, which covers snorkel gear but not the entrance fee. 

4. Polynesian Cultural Center

Entertaining and informative, but expensive and far from Honolulu . 

Located in the laidback Laie town on Oahu’s North Shore, the Polynesian Cultural Center is considered a Polynesian Disneyland for its six immersive villages representing the island cultures of Hawaii, Fiji, Aotearoa (New Zealand), Samoa, Tahiti and Tonga. 

While Hayes attests to PCC’s ability to show people about Polynesia, it’s a long drive from Honolulu and will cost at least $89.95 and up to $289.95 per person , depending on whether you want to experience the two shows. 

A much cheaper and closer alternative is Bishop Museum ($28.95 per adult, cheaper for seniors and kids), which has “the largest collection of Hawaiian and Pacific cultural artifacts and natural history specimens in the world.” There’s also a Planetarium for people to learn more about the ancient navigational practice of wayfinding.

5. Iolani Palace

Definitely go, and keep exploring downtown Honolulu.

As the only official royal residence in the nation, ‘Iolani Palace is a must-do for immersing visitors in the late 1800s. “‘Iolani Palace is a great place to visit and learn the history of the Hawaiian Monarch and especially about King Kalakaua, who was really a monarch ahead of his time,” Blankenfeld said. They’ll also be educated on the tragic overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, a necessity when learning about Hawaiian history. 

Hayes recommends people go beyond the palace and visit other parts of downtown Honolulu with historical significance, all within walking distance of each other.

A few minutes away is Kawaiaha’o Church, the oldest church on Oahu, built in 1820 where many ali’i , or Hawaiian royalty spent their time. The church has a free self-guided audio tour that people can follow by scanning QR codes. View the royal pews, Princess Kai‘iulani’s bench and plantings and King Lunalilo’s tomb. 

Hayes also suggests visitors stop by the nearby Hawaiian Mission Houses ($20 per person for a guided tour, $10 for a self-guided tour) to learn more about the massive impact Christian missionaries had on Hawaii and see Hawaii’s oldest Western-style house. 

6. Road to Hana

Overhyped and there are better ways to experience Hawaii’s natural beauty.

The 52-mile-long Road to Hana drive is Maui’s most iconic activity for its stunning natural wonders. Think rainforests, waterfalls and sea cliffs. If travelers don’t leave first thing in the morning, they’ll face traffic jams and crowded waterfalls, taking away from the natural escape they were looking for. Many tourists also park their cars illegally and residents trying to commute have complained of the chaos. 

A better way for people to immerse themselves in Hawaii’s natural environments that's also more unique is by volunteering with a nonprofit like Hawaii Land Trust (they also offer beach cleanups and other types of volunteer days) and Maui Cultural Lands to help care for the land by replanting native trees. Technically, you could do this on any island, and you’ll get a deeper understanding of Hawaii’s forests. 

Usually a tourist trap, but you should still try to experience hula. 

A quintessential Hawaiian vacation experience is going to a luau. With countless luaus across the state, it’s tough for people to know they’re not wasting their money on something made just for tourists.

Unfortunately, this can be a tricky one to navigate. “It’s harder to define authenticity in a luau today because it’s been so touristy it’s essentially like every show is almost the same everywhere,” Hayes said. “Some things you look out for are really shiny, shimmery skirts, really bright colors, all those things are a dead giveaway.” 

Hayes said the Ali‘i Lu‘au ‘Onipa‘a , which shares the last Hawaiian monarch Queen Lili‘uokalani’s story, and the following “HA: Breath of Life” show at PCC are solid choices. “Hands down, that’s the best dinner show; the storyline is absolutely amazing and you’re still getting all of the cultures,” he said. “You’re sitting in an amphitheater, so the seats are better and the people are actually from Tahiti or Tonga or Samoa.”

If your hotel hosts a luau experience, which tends to be pricey, try to meet with the cultural director beforehand and learn more about what’s behind their specific show. 

To experience the most authentic hula, seek out a hula competition . Contestants practice a song or two for months on end, striving to represent the art form in their highest regard. This is where dancers, musicians and halau (hula schools) are putting their best foot forward, literally.

1. The Royal Hawaiian, a Luxury Collection Resort, Waikiki

Lovingly referred to as the “Pink Palace of the Pacific,” The Royal Hawaiian is one of the oldest hotels on Waikiki and has hosted plenty of celebrities and dignitaries.

Divided between a modern and historic tower, this waterfront hotel benefits from beautiful pools, plenty of history (be sure to take one of the free historic tours) and a famous bakery, the Royal Hawaiian Bakery.

2. Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, Waikiki Beach

If you’re looking for that familiar white tea scent for which Westin is known, this beachfront Westin brings plenty of pomp and circumstance as its neighbor the Pink Palace.
