How to Visit Gangotri Temple

The simple shrine of Gangotri temple has special significance for Hindu pilgrims. It's considered to be one of the holiest places in India as it's regarded as the spiritual source of the ever powerful Ganges River. Set amidst rugged mountains and forest, Gangotri attracts almost 300,000 pilgrims a year. Every evening towards 8 p.m., an aarti (worship with fire) is held at the temple.

When is Gangotri Temple Open?

Gangotri temple opens on a set day every year. This falls on Akshaya Tritiya (an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar), in the last week of April or first week of May.  In 2021, Gangotri will open on May 14. When is Yamunotri Temple Open?

The same as Gangotri temple, Yamunotri temple opens every year on Akshaya Tritiya (an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar). It falls in the last week of April or first week of May. In 2021, it is on May 14. The temple also closes for the season on Diwali. On the day the temple opens, the Goddess is carried from the nearby village of Kharsali (said to be Yamuna's mother's home), installed in the temple, and duly returned when the temple closes.

How Can Yamunotri Temple be Reached?

The route by road is Haridwar/Rishikesh-Dehradun-Mussoorie-Naugaon-Barkot–Hanuman Chatti. The journey to the village of Hanuman Chatti, which is around 14 kilometers from the Yamunotri temple, takes around eight hours from Rishikesh and six hours from the hill station of Mussoorie . From there, it's necessary to take a shared taxi (departures every few minutes) to Janki Chatti. Your trek starts there! It's only 5 kilometers (3 miles) to the Yamunotri temple, via Kharsali, but it's a very steep and and in some parts narrow climb. As a result, people usually take around two hours to cover the distance and it really helps if you take a locally available walking stick. If you find you don't want to walk, there are mules and men to help carry you.

Basic guesthouses and GMVN Tourist Bungalows provide accommodations at Yamunotri, Janki Chatti, and Hanuman Chatti. If you stay the night at Yamunotri, you'll be able to witness the evening aarti (worship with fire) there.

Is it Possible to See the Actual Source of the Yamuna River?

The origin of the Yamuna River is a frozen lake and glacier located around a kilometer above the temple. Unless you have mountaineering skills, the climb isn't advised though. It's a very difficult one.

How Can Kedarnath Temple be Reached?

The route to Kedarnath starts off at Rishikesh and heads in the same direction as to Badrinath, but branches off at Rudraprayag (where connections are available). The destination is Gaurikund, 14 kilometers (9 miles) from Kedarnath. The whole journey from Rishikesh takes around 12 hours by bus or jeep. Then, from Gaurikund, it's a grueling uphill trek to the temple. Expect it to take around six hours. The stunning scenery of the Mandakini River along the way helps though! Those who don't feel up to walking can opt to take a pony, which will reduce the duration of the trek by an hour. There are porters available to help carry luggage as well.

Alternatively, Kedranath temple is also accessible by helicopter! The Uttarakhand government provides services departing from various locations and online bookings can be made here . Other options are Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd (owned by the Indian government) and private company Pilgrim Aviation . A one way trip only takes 15 minutes.

In terms of accommodations, basic GMVN Tourist Bungalows can be found at Gaurikund. Following the devastating 2013 flash flood, which destroyed infrastructure around the temple, the government has constructed tent colonies to accommodate pilgrims. Usually, the period for partaking in this Yatra is from April End – October End. However, each year the Uttarakhand Government announces the dates of the opening and closing of the circuit. In the winter times, the 4 shrines are moved to their winter sojourns.

Namely, Ukhimath, Joshimath, Mukhba and Kharsali for the deities of Kedarnath, Badrinath , Gangotri and Yamunotri respectively. The gates to all these winter Dhams remain open for devotees – thus, technically you may visit the shrines all year long (albeit not in the same locations)

How to get there

Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun is the nearest airport. In fact, from here, you may even take up a Helicopter service to Kedarnath and Badrinath. These are available from Delhi, Dehradun, Phata, Augustmuni and Gauchar near Rudraprayag and Dehradun.

Rishikesh, Haridwar, Kotdwar and Dehradun are well connected to major cities of India by Railway Network. From here you can get bus or you can hire taxi as well towards your onwards journey.

Char Dham Yatra Route

As per the Hindu Mythology, the auspicious and ever-so-important Yatra should be undertaken from west to east, in order to cover the holy places in a clockwise manner. Thus, it means that you should start off your pilgrimage from Yamunotri, then proceed to Gangotri, Kedarnath and finish your journey at Badrinath.

Yamunotri Dham

The original source of Yamuna River, Yamunotri is surrounded by stunning high forested peaks and a large valley. Yamuna is known to be the second largest and one of the holiest river in India after Ganga. As per the Hindu mythology, it is believed that Yamuna is the daughter of Surya (God of Son) & the sister of Yama (God of Death).

It is believed that you will be washed of your sins when you visit Yamunotri. Given the tough journey, faith, and transcendent significance of the river motivates the pilgrims to their destination. Distinctive features of Yamunotri include hot springs where raw rice is cooked and turned into prasad. Also, there many holy shrines, ashrams and temples in and around the Dham.

Yamunotri is located at an altitude of 3293 mts, in the Garhwal region and situated about 40 km away from Barkot in Uttarkashi. While the actual source of Yamuna lies in the Yamunotri Glacier, at an elevation of 6,387 mts near Bandarpunch Peaks.

History and Importance of Yamunotri

The temple at Yamunotri is dedicated to goddess Yamuna. It should be noted that the main Deity of the temple is made up of Black marble. Built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the 19th century, the current temple was created after the previous one was destroyed by climate activity.

Gangotri Dham

Unarguably the most important river for Hindus, Ganga is the most sacred river in the world. Gangotri is one of the origin sources of Ganga (Ganges). It should be noted here that the foremost source of the river is “Gaumukh” – a glacier located 19 km from the Gangotri temple.

Gangotri is located on the banks of Bhagirathi river at an altitude of 3100 mts. Gangotri is the starting point of Ganga. It should be noted that the river Bhagirathi attains the name Ganga from Devprayag. This is where Bhagirathi meets with Alaknanda to form Ganga.

The temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya (usually in the month of May) and closes down on Yama Dwitiya or Bhai Duj (usually falling in October/ November).

Ganga water is the purest form of blessing and is used in Poojas (prayers) or offering in temples. In fact, pilgrims carry the auspicious water from here as a way to carry Prasad and blessings for future prayers.

Gangotri is the home place of many varieties of flora and fauna. There are several temples in Gangotri where visitors can learn the history behind the creation of Ganga River.

History and Importance of Gangotri Temple

As per Hindu Mythology, Ganga was born as a result of prize given Shivji to king Bhagirath for his penance. However, owing to her superiority as well as the fact that Earth would be overwhelmed if Ganga came down in full force, Shivji caught her in his locks.

There is a sacred stone near the Gangotri temple that denotes the place where Ganga first came down to earth in the river form. This is why Ganga is also called by the name of Bhagirathi (i.e. the daughter of Bhagirath).

The Gangotri temple in its present form was constructed by Gorkha Commander Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th Century. It is believed that at the time of construction of the current temple, the Gaumukh glacier was present here – however it has receded to its current location due to global warming and climate change.

Kedarnath Dham

One of the most sacred pilgrimages in India, Kedarnath temple is located on the bank of Mandakini river at an altitude of 3584 mts. Historically, this region was known as “Kedar Khand”. Kedarnath temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shivji in India.

Flanked by breathtaking snow-capped peaks, Kedarnath is the most remote locations on the Char Dham Yatra. The town itself is stunningly beautiful and the scenic beauty tends to attract a lot of pilgrims, with huge crowds flocking the region in the summer months of May and June. Also, the Kedarnath trek is quite famous amongst the trekker tribe.

It should be mentioned here that the 2013 floods did huge damage to the region. In fact, the fact that the temple is still standing has been the source of massive reverence. Prior to the 2013 floods, Gaurikund was the last destination on Kedarnath route, but with the floods in 2013, a new trekking route is under process.

This route will be approximately 21 kms of trekking, which will either start from Sonprayag or Sitapur. As of now, helicopter is the best way to reach Kedarnath temple.

Currently, only accommodation near the dham are campsites due to the excessive damage from the floods.

In terms of thingy to do nearby, you may visit Chorabari tal (Gandhi Sarovar), Vasukital, Gaurikund, Trijuginarayan, Ukhimath, Panch Kedar, Madmaheshwar, Tungnath, Chopta, DeoriaTal and Rudranath etc.

History and Importance of Kedarnath Temple

Dedicated to incarnations of Shivji, Kedarnath is named after King Kedar, a ruler from Satya Yuga. This is the place where Shivji is said to have absolved the Pandavas from killing their own cousins Kauravas in the Mahabharata.

In fact, there is an interesting story behind the town and its temple. According to the Puranas, the Pandava brothers did a major penance in Kedarnath to please Shivji.

Earlier the temple was built by Pandavas and Present temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya. Just Behind the temple you will see samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya.

Badrinath Dham

Badrinath is an important holy shrine for Vaishnavites and is one of the 108 divya desams incarnation of Vishnuji. Also, Badrinath the town is part of Panch Badri temples which include Yog Dhyan Badri, Bhavishya Badri, Adi Badri and Vriddha Badri, along with Badrinath temple.

And, Badrinath is situated at an altitude of about 3415 mts in the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand. Located in Silent valley of Garhwal, Badrinath lies on the shores of Alaknanda river. The town is known for its stunning beauty, pleasant weather, thick forest cover as well as the beautiful views of snow clad mountains along the holy river flowing through the surrounding green valley.

Badrinath is the home to many celebrations including Kedar-Badri Utsav, Janam-ashtami, Mata Mruti Ka Mela. Nearby places that should be visited include Panch Prayag temple, Badhri Naryanan Temple, Vasudhara Falls, Hot Geyser (tapt kunds or hot water springs), Bheem Pul, Mana Village etc.

History & Importance of Badrinath Temple

The original Badrinath temple was built Adi Shankaracharya, who initially discovered the Badrinarayan idol in the Alakananda River. It was he who moved the shrine into the hot water springs of Tapt Kund. Due to natural time taking course, there was a need for a new temple to be built.

The Present temple was built by King of Garhwal in 16th century. The stunning ornament stones, traditional carving, pillar designs will take your breath away at the first look! In terms of the architecture, the appearance is similar to the Buddhist Vihara temple.

In the Satya yuga, Shivji meditated here for thousands of years while Goddess Lakshmi provided shadow over her husband in the form of a Badri tree. So, this is how the place for its name for Badrinath!

In fact, the entire valley surrounding Kedar-Badri was said to be the home of Shivji. This is the reason Badrinath becomes a main-stay around Mahashivratri when the festival is celebrated with full pomp-and-circumstance.

Itinerary for the Chota Char Dham Yatra

Day 1: delhi to haridwar.

Start your journey towards Haridwar from Delhi, covering 210 KMs in 6 hours’ worth of driving time. I would suggest reaching Haridwar as early as possible. This will leave you ample time to explore one of the holiest places in India – the gateway to the God and one of the oldest living world cities.

One of the MUST DO things (apart from exploring the many lanes and paths of the city) includes the magic of the evening Aarati (worship with fire) wherein all lamps are lit and prayers are offered at the Har ki Pauri (Steps of God). For Hindus, a dip in the auspicious Ganges leads to a washing off of all sins and a source of attaining liberation from the endless cycle of death and rebirth.

Day 2: Haridwar to Barkot

Start your day off as early as possible and after a dip in Ganga, you start your journey towards the first dham – Yamunotri – daughter of Surya & sister of Yam. Today’s travel towards Barkot will take you about 10 hours, covering 200 KMs.

Barkot is situated at an elevation of 1220 mts. Do remember to explore the little hamlet, even though the journey of your day today would be quite long. Modern civilization has not quite touched the place and you’ll be drawn in by the rituals and the ways of the city.

The surrounding views are insanely mesmerizing and include peaks of Bandar Punch that are snow-capped throughout the year. I suggest this as an overnight stop on your way to Yamunotri to keep you fresh and feeling alive throughout the journey! The views will forever be embedded in your memories, trust me.

Day 3: Barkot / Yamunotri/ Barkot

After an early breakfast, you’ll start your journey towards the first dham in earnest. With 36 KMs of driving along with a 7 KM trek, you’ll reach Yamunotri in around 5 hours today. If you plan on hiring a horse or a Doli, that will cost you anywhere from INR 1000 – 2500.

However, do note these rates may vary depending on when in season you visit and the number of tourists at that particular time.

Yamunotri was the home of sage, Asit Muni. Yamuna is the daughter of the Surya (God of Sun) and Sarayyu. Her brother is Yama (God of Death). It is believed that Yama would not torment any individual at the time of death who bathes in Yamuna, his sister. It is Yamuna, holder of infinite love and compassion, who can grant us freedom from even death, in the realm of her elder brother.

After having visited the shrine and nearby places, you’ll return to Barkot for your onward journey.

Day 4: Barkot / Gangotri

This day begins with an early morning as well. If you’re not completely fit – you might feel fatigued from the previous day’s journey. Hence, I do recommend you get to bed early to get full night’s rest for your day today!

Today’ you’ll be covering 210 KMs in about 9 hours’ worth of driving time. Do remember to take breaks. I particularly recommend stopping over at Gangnani – a hot water spring enroute. If you learn by 6 AM, you should hope to arrive at Gangotri by 3:30 PM.

Today is the day you visit your 2nd Dham, Gangotri, the origin of Ganga and seat of the goddess Ganga. The origin of the holy river is at Gaumukh, set in the Gangotri Glacier, and is a 19 km trek from Gangotri.

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Ganga took the form of a river to absolve the sins of King Bhagirath’s predecessors, following his severe penance to Shivji spanning several centuries.

There is no other river as closely associated with Hinduism as Ganga. Respected since time immemorial as THE spiritual purifier, giver of health and prosperity – Ganga is part of the country’s religious fabric.

Visiting Gangotri is truly among the most blessed experiences of a Hindu’s life; and as uplifting and inspiring for any traveler.

Day 5 – Gangotri /Uttarkashi

Today, you may start your journey relatively leisurely. Waking up in Gangotri is an experience unto itself and should be treated as such. There are not many places where you feel peace quite like you’d here!

Today, after taking in the experience as much as you can – you start your journey towards Uttarkashi. Uttarkashi literally translates to the Banaras (i.e. Kashi) of the North. Today’s journey will take you 4 hours to cover 95 KMs.

Uttarkashi, a small town at an elevation of 1588 mts, is situated between Varuna and Ashi rivers. These rivers slow into the Bhagirathi from either side of the town. Given its similarities to Kashi – the city enjoys similar ghats and temples like the city it is named after.

When you’re here, do remember to visit the Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Shivji. Other temples you must visit include Annapurna Temple and Bhairav Temple. Also, it is believed that in the second millennium of Kaliyug (the current ongoing yuga), Kashi (i.e. Banaras) will be submerged, and Uttarkashi will replace it as an important religious centre.

Day 6: Uttarkashi / Sitapur

Another day when you will have an early wakeup call & breakfast. Today you’ll be reaching your destination of Sitapur, covering 212 KMs worth of journey in around 10 hours of driving time. Sitapur is situated at an elevation of roughly 1820 mts, just 7 kms from Gaurikund and 26 kms from Guptkashi.

Sitapur is situated only 2 kms from Son Prayag, lying at the confluence of Basuki and Mandakini rivers. It is said that a mere touch of the holy water from this holy site of Son Prayag helps the individual to attain the “Baikunth Dham”.

Another religiously important location is the Triyuginarayan – the marriage place of Lord Shiva and Parvati. This is situated at a distance of 14 kms by bus and 5 kms on foot from here.

In order to reach Kedarnath – you’ll be trekking from here. However, do remember to bathe in the hot water pond here and visit the Gauri Devi temple. This is the place where Goddess Parvati meditated to attain Lord Shiva.

Day 7: Sitapur/ Gaurikund/ Kedarnath

Today is going to be a long day with lots of physical activity! After an early breakfast you’ll proceed to Gaurikund, taking you two hours of driving time. Do remember to pack lunch and carry sufficient water for the day today.

From Gaurikund, you will start your trekking in earnest. Overnight, you’ll be staying in Kedarnath (mostly camping accommodations are available since the destruction of 2013 floods). Overall, you’ll be covering 32 Kms from Sitapur to Gaurikund by driving and then another 14 KMS of trek. This entire journey will take you about 9 hours in total.

The third dham is possible the remotest dhams you’ll be covering. Located in Shivji’s own home – the shrine is majestic and the natural setting is breath-taking.

From the towering mountains covered in snow, the plummeting streams and rivers, and lush green meadows and forests — and the arduous trek that gets you to it, serve to further cement the deep-rooted faith that this temple inspires!

This site is almost unchanged for centuries and has a spiritual energy of its own! For the devotees of Shivji, this is the last frontier, the ultimate path to salvation!

For the trekking part a Horse & doli are both decent options in case you’re unable to manage the trek. The cost ranges from INR 1000 to 2500. Though these rates are subject to change dependent on the number of pilgrims and the time of your journey during the season.

Day 8: Kedarnath / Rudraprayag

Today, you’ll be moving from Kedarnath to Rudraprayad after an early morning breakfast at Gaurikund. Today’s journey will be 75 KMs along with a 14 Km trek. You should reach Gaurikund by 11 AM and Rudraprayad at 3:30 PM, if you leave from Kedarnath around 6 AM. You will be stopping at Sitapur for lunch.

What we know as Garhwal today was earlier known as the Kedar-Khand in the past. In fact, Puranas will tell you that Kedar-Khan is the abode of God. The scriptures of Ramayana and Mahabharata were scripted here.

Also, named after Shivji (Rudra), Rudraprayag is situated at the holy confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, at a distance of 34 kms from Srinagar (Garhwal, UK).

This confluence is particularly beautiful as if the two sisters are embracing each other! Here, it is believed that Narad Muni worshipped Shivji – who appeared here in his Rudra Avatar (incarnation) to bless Narad. The complete area is blessed with enormous natural splendor, places of sacred prominence, lakes and glaciers.

Day 9: Rudraprayag/ Badrinath

Not as early as yesterday – you’ll start your journey towards your final dham – Badrinath. After breakfast, you’ll be travelling a distance of 160 KMs, taking you around 8 hours of driving time to cover the distance! Ensure you leave early enough to reach Badrinath in time for evening Darshan and Pooja at the temple.

Badrinath and its route is a journey of beginning. The pilgrims visiting the spine always mention that the landmarks and vistas continually deliver a fresher view, a diverse feeling, an additional nuance to an experience.

It is said that this is the toughest leg of the journey and often times, it can be unforgiving, but only to a closed minded person. The journey from Rishikesh to Badrinath, as Sir Edmund Hillary rightfully noted in his expeditions, is, in many ways, a journey from the ocean to the sky, as much mental as physical. And another route to heaven – and spiritual liberation.

Day 10: Badrinath / Birhi

Coming to a close for your spiritual awakening – you’ll have a leisurely morning wakeup call and only depart post lunch for Birhi. Today’s journey is 95 KMs, taking you 5 hours to complete.

Day 11: Birhi/Rishikesh

After breakfast at Birhi, proceed to Rishikesh. This journey will take you 160 KMs and 7 hours to complete.

It will be a brilliant idea to also explore Rishikesh while you’re here. Situated in the foothills of Himalayas, has some of the most pleasing views as well as the most soul calming vibes!

With Ganga spreading the happiest of emotions around – Rishikesh truly is one of the most mesmerizing places in the country. Do remember that Rishikesh is a vegetarian city by law, as well as an alcohol-free city.

In terms of places to visit – do remember to check out the oh-so-famous Laxman Jhulla, Ram jhulla and several ghats in and around this holy town.

Day 12: Rishikesh/Delhi

Head on back to your original location! Carry the peace, tranquility and happiness with you for a long time! The peace is quite like no other!

Char Dham Yatra Travel Tips

• Remember to check the exact opening and closing dates of the Yatra.
• Given that this Yatra holds immense importance for over a billion Hindus in the world – it is advisable that you remember to be kind along the way. For example, remember to cover your heads, remove shoes before entering any holy place.
• Ensure you’re not littering anywhere on this trip. The hills and secluded locations need to be kept in their pristine conditions to ensure the bio-diversity of the region.
• Carry heavy woolen clothes to protect from cold weather during the month of October-November and carry moderate woolen during Summer Season. Remember to dress in layers as the weather can change at the drop of a hat in the hills.
• Do carry creams, moisturizers, sunscreen creams.
• Pack a medical kit with painkillers, antibiotics, cough lozenges, Antiseptic cream, Iodine, tube-squeeze cream and medicines for cold and fever along with your routine medicines.
• Remember to pack snacks.
• Do not take pictures if cameras are not allowed in any particular area. Do not play with the sentiments of any particular religion.
• At least a month before the Yatra, it is advisable to start preparatory exercises
• Carry extra batteries and films for your camera, as electricity is not regular in such remote places.
• Do not travel in the rainy season as there are a lot of landslides during that time.
• Book hotel rooms in advance if you are travelling close to the temple opening dates, there is a heavy rush of pilgrims.
• Alcohol or non-vegetarian food is not permitted during Char Dham Yatra Tour.

The Chota Char Dham Yatra is one of the most significant journeys in the life of a Hindu. Situated in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, you can cover the entire Yatra in a matter of 10-15 days.

Char Dham is referred to the four holiest pilgrimage sites in India that are widely revered by Hindus. These holy sites are Badrinath, Dwarka , Puri and Rameswaram situated in four different directions of India. The Char Dham defined by Adi Shankaracharya consists of three Vaishnavite and one Shaivite pilgrimage centers. The pilgrimage sites of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath in Uttarakhand were known as Chota Char Dham to differentiate them from the bigger circuit of Char Dham sites, but after the mid-20th century they have been also referred to as the Char Dham. Among four scared sites Kedarnath is dedicated to Lord Shiva while Badrinath is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. On the other hand, Yamunotri and Gangotri are dedicated to Goddess Ganga and Yamuna rivers respectively. It is considered highly sacred by Hindus to visit Char Dham during one’s lifetime. These four ancient temples also marks the spiritual source of four sacred rivers – Ganga(Gangotri), Yamuna (Yamunotri), Mandakini (Kedarnath) and Alaknanda (Badrinath).

Char Dham Yatra is one of the most popular pilgrimage routes, with millions of devotees paying a visit to all these religious places in aspiration of eliminating all sins and to attain salvation by the blessings of the Lord. The Char Dham must be visited from left to right – beginning with Yamunotri, going on to Gangotri, then Kedarnath and culminating the journey at Badrinath. This route follows the Hindu tradition of parikrama. Every year more than 250,000 pilgrims visit Char Dham from various parts of India. Char Dham – the four pilgrimages are open from May till October every year. All four sites can be covered in one stretch in 10-­11 days. Nowadays, one can also get helicopter services to visit Char Dham sites in just 2 days.

Yamunotri is one of the four sites of Char Dham pilgrimage situated in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand. Yamunotri is the source of River Yamuna and is regarded as the seat of Goddess Yamuna. This is the western most shrine in the Garhwal Himalayas, situated at an altitude of 3293 m atop Bandar punch parvat.

The chief attraction at Yamunotri is the temple devoted to the Goddess Yamuna. It is surrounded by mountains on all sides. The temple was first built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the early 19th century. The temple was damaged in the earth quakes of 1923 and 1982. But it was subsequently rebuilt by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal, who was the ruler of this region. Yamunotri Temple can be reached by 5 km trek from Janki Chatti which is the nearest road point. Janki Chatti , Kharsali , Saptarishi Kund , Barkot and Hanuman Chatti are the other attractions in Yamunotri. Yamunotri also has famous trekking routes, such as Hanuman Chatti – Yamunotri route, Dodi Tal and Janki Chatti.

The temple opens every year on the auspicious day of the Akshaya Tritiya, which generally falls during the last week of April, or early May. The temple closes on the sacred day of Diwali in October / November. Kharsali is the winter home to the idol of goddess Yamuna. The best time to visit Yamunotri is from May to June and September to October.

Gangotri, the origin of the River Ganges, is one of the four sites in the Char Dham pilgrimage circuit in Uttarakhand along with Badrinath, Kedarnath and Yamunotri. It is situated at an altitude of 3100 m in the Garhwal Himalayan Range on the banks of the holy Bhagirathi River. River Ganges originates at Gaumukh in Gangotri Glacier, which is located about 19 km away from Gangotri town. Near the temple is located a sacred stone where King Bhagiratha is said to have worshipped Lord Shiva. Surya Kund , Pandava Gufa , Bhaironghati and Gaumukh are the other religious attractions in Gangotri. Gangotri temple is opened from May and gets closed on the occasion of Diwali festival in Oct / Nov. Gangotri temple remains closed during winters as the region is prone to heavy snowfall. The idol is shifted to Mukhyamath Temple in Mukhba village, 20 km downstream.

Kedarnath is a popular destination for Hindu pilgrims and is one of the four major sites in Uttarakhand known as Chota Char Dham pilgrimage. It lies at an altitude of 3584 m near Chorabari Glacier, the head of river Mandakini. It is the most remote of the four Char Dham sites and is flanked by breathtaking snow-clad peaks. The famous Kedarnath temple is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is thronged by thousands of tourists each year. Other than Kedarnath temple, Bhairavnath temple , Chorabari Tal , Shankaracharya Samadhi , Vasuki Tal , Deoria Tal and Ukhimath are the some other religious places near Kedarnath.

Kedarnath can be reached by 14 km steep climb from Gaurikund to the temple of Kedarnath and can be done on foot or on ponies. Ponies or horses are available on rent from Gaurikund. After the flash floods of 2013 which greatly affected the Kedarnath region, the route has been modified. The 14 km trek is now of 21 km which starts from Sonprayag. A general health check-up is done to ensure the safety of the tourists before allowing them to go further after registration. From here a trek of 7 km takes place up to Bhim Bali, while the next halt is at Linchauli at another 7 km. The last halt is the Kedarnath temple after a trek of another 7 km. The original route from Gaurikund runs through Rambara (7 km) – Linchauli (4 km) – Kedarnath (3 km).

The extreme weather condition of Kedarnath prompts the temple to be open only for 6 months from the end of April to the beginning of November. The town receives heavy snowfall during the winter months which makes it uninhabitable. The residents of Kedarnath shift to villages lying at lower altitudes during the winter months while Lord Kedarnath’s Palki is transferred to Ukhimath.

Badrinath is the most important of the four sites of famous Char Dham pilgrimage; the other three being Puri , Dwarka and Rameswaram. It is also visited as part of Chota Char Dham Pilgrimage along with Kedarnath, Yamunotri and Gangotri in Himalayan region of Uttarakhand. According to the epic Mahabharata, Badrinath is the site where Nara and Narayana, the dual forms of Vishnu, did meditation. It is also believed that the Pandavas passed through Badrinath on their way to heaven. Legend has it that Sage Vyasa authored Mahabharata at a cave in Mana, which is about 4 km from Badrinath.

Badrinath is famous for its Badrinath Temple that houses Lord Badrinarayan, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Adi Shankara discovered a Saligram idol of Lord Badrinarayan in the river bed of Alaknanda. He installed this idol in a cave nearby Tapt Kund. It was later shifted to the present temple by the King of Garhwal in the 16th century. Badrinath is also famous for Panch Badri temples, which are Yog Dhyan Badri, Bhavishtya Badri, Adi Badri and Vriddha Badri, along with Badrinath temple. Some of the other attraction of Badrinath includes Tapt Kund , Brahma Kapal , Sheshanetra , Vasudhara Falls , Charan Paduka , Satopanth Lake , Neelkanth and Mana Village . Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnaprayag, Nandaprayag , Vishnuprayag and Pandukeswar are among the other pilgrimage sites on the route to Badarinath.

The best time to visit Badrinath is from May to June and again from September to October. The monsoon months must be avoided as the region is prone to landslides. Tourists are advised not to visit during winters as the region receives heavy snowfall and harsh cold conditions. The Badrinath temple is closed from November to April.

At a height of 3,291 metres, YAMUNOTRI TEMPLE is located in the western part of the Garhwal Himalayas. The temple was constructed in the 19th century by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur. The temple was rebuilt by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal and is devoted to the river Yamuna, who is symbolised by a silver image that is covered in flowers. Yamunotri Temple is the first destination of 4 Dham Yatra circuit which defines a pious journey to Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangorti and Yamunotri. Chardham Yatra: A Complete Guide (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Chopta, Badrinath & Rishikesh)

There seem to be a million question marks hovering around the much revered Char Dham Yatra to be undertaken in the state of Uttarakhand. I had many until i planned it myself during the last Yatra season. It is overwhelming to plan everything all by yourself and is much more easy to outsource it to some travel agency blindly following their charted itinerary but its always better to explore your options at least on this particular journey.

The concern arises out of the mere fact that the journey is long (minimum 10 days) and the resources are limited to handle such huge influx of devotees during every Yatra season. Therefore a proper planning is needed to make the journey comfortable, smooth and economical.

Itinerary followed:

Day 1: Mumbai -Delhi (6 am flight) Reach Dehradun by 5 pm. (300 km- 7 hrs). Night stay at Ashok spa & Resort

Day 2: Dehradun- Mussoorie- Sayanchatti (165 km- 6 hrs) Sightseeing on the way (Mall road, Kempty Falls). Night stay (Hotel Durga resort and restaurant)

Day 3: Sayanchatti- Yamunotri- Uttarkashi. Trek to Yamunotri (7 km one way) return by 2 pm. Drive to Uttarkashi (120 km- 4.5 hrs) and reach by 7 pm. Night stay (Hotel Jahnavi)

Day 4: Uttarkashi- Gangotri - Uttarkashi (190 km- 4.5 hrs). Morning after breakfast drive to Gangotri via Harsil valley. Bhaironath temple on the way back. Visit Vishwanath temple in the evening. Night stay (Hotel Jahnavi)

Day 5: Uttarkashi to phata (Kedarnath)

Day 6: Fly to kedarnath. Night stay (Swargrohini Cottages)

Day 7: Early morning darshan. Fly back to Phata. Leave for Sari village to trek to Deorital lake. Reach Chopta by evening 6 pm (60 km -2 hrs). Night stay ( Himalayan Stag Camps)

Day 8: Chopta- Tunganath - Chandrashilla- Badrinath

On the way visit Gopinath temple (150 km- 5 hrs)

Day 9: Badrinath Temple visit, Mana village. (95 km- 4 hrs).Night stay at Chamoli

Day 10: Early morning ride to Rishikesh, Visit Koteshwar Mahadev Rudraprayag and Dharadevi (kalyasaur) on the way near Srinagar (200 km -7 hrs). Triveni ghat aarti in the evening.

Day 11: Rishikesh and Haridwar sightseeing. Night stay (Hotel Madhuban). Mansa mata and Chandi mata cable car. Har ki Pauri Ganga aarti.

Day 12: Start early morning towards Delhi by Janshatabdi Train. Fly in the evening to Mumbai.

Total 1500 km covered from Dehradun to Haridwar in 9 days

For starters i would recommend to fly in and out of Dehradun to reduce the unnecessary and unproductive travel from Delhi. But the lack of flight options and exorbitant airfares makes it very difficult to go for it. Nonetheless, Flying to Delhi and then getting a connecting cab or train is also fine. Remember if you opt for a road travel you can reach Dehradun anytime of the day with ample of options, where for the journey via train there are limited options for Dehradun as most of trains terminate at Haridwar. For us it was morning flight to Delhi and then a private cab till Dehradun. We decided to stay the night there and start early in the morning for Sayanchatti. I would suggest taking a evening flight to Delhi and and take the Nanda devi express which leaves around midnight from Hazarat Nizamuddin railway station to reach Dehradun early morning by 8 am. Now the advantage here is you can transfer directly to Mussoorie which a couple of hour ride to utilize the day for sightseeing and enjoy the evening at the queen of hills. Staying at Mussoorie also reduces the overall distance to be covered till Sayanchatti for the next.Now why Sayanchatti instead of Barkot? I will explain that later.

Syanachatti

Barkot is the last major town on the way to Yamuntori and hence is swarming with tourists with sub standard options for stay. A better option to halt for the night is Sayanchatti which a much less crowded and a beautiful town located some 20 km before Yamunotri on the banks of river Yamuna. It is the best place to relax and rejuvenate in the lap of nature.

A 6 km trek to Yamunotri temple is steep and challenging. The trail is a unevenly paved often slippery due to the narrow water streams running across the path from the mountain. There are numerous pony and palki services available at very competitive prices if you bargain. It shouldn't cost more than a 1000 bucks per person on a pony to and fro Yanunotri Temple. In the months of April & May it may even be as high as 5000 pp depending upon the availability another reason to plan your trip near fag end of the Yatra season. As i mentioned, the trek is not a casual walk and would test your stamina and endurance. Although, i finished it at the same time on foot with my family walking adjacent to me on the ponies, i was struggling at certain patches where the trail tuns into an almost 60 degree inclined climb for a considerable distance. The hot water springs at the top are the boon for devotees reaching on foot as it relaxes your aching muscles and gets the mind ready for the descent. In my opinion, apart from the religious sentiments attached the trail is hardly scenic and interesting as compared to the others in the Himalayas. It's a closed valley with negligible openings for mountain view and carrying bleak prospects to enjoy an occasional breeze. It should not take more than 6 hrs (to and fro) for the trek and one can reach Uttarkashi before sundown if manage to start the day early as we did.

Uttarkashi is the base town for the Gangotri yatra however i would definitely suggested to spend the night in Gangotri itself which offers descent means of accommodation. The valley is surprisingly untouched and pristine as compared to others on the Yatra route. Harsil valley on the way is an all season hidden gem overlooking the Bhagirathi river. The roads are spellbinding moving along the river approaching the snow capped Himalayas with enchanting valley views. The journey is refreshing with a couple of pit stops on the way to Gangotri. Dharali village provide better breakfast and refreshment options. The temple premises are blissful and one can spend hours sitting beside the river bed soaking sun and enjoying the fresh mountain breeze.

This day is a long transit day to reach Phata, Guptkashi. Phata is the base village for all the helicopter service to Kedarnath. The trek route for Kedarnath start from Sonprayag (Gaurikund) 20 km further ahead of Phata.

There are numerous private operators providing to and fro helicopter services to Kedarnath temple. The last year's 2 way fare fixed by the state government was 4900 pp. The best operator according to the word of mouth is UT Air and the worse is Indocopters, whose services we availed. A bunch of understaffed morons running the show with minimal resources. We waited for an average 6 hours both ways even after getting a designated slot. It takes maximum 15 minutes from Phata to reach kedarnath. Those 15 minutes were the most memorable ones of the entire journey. The chopper literally goes past the clouds traversing between the mountains providing mesmerizing view of the Kedar valley and the accompanying Mandakini river. Within a span of 15 minutes, the elevation increases by roughly 2000 mt and inversely the temperature drops by at least 10 degrees Celsius. After reaching we waited at the helipad to get acclimatize to the sudden change of terrain and weather. It is hence advised to not rush immediately as you land and give it some time to let your breathing pattern get accustomed to the elevation. The air here is dangerously thin and cold making you gasp for breath even after brisk walking for hardly 100 mts. We checked into Swargrohini Cottages, a premium one among all the other accommodations in Kedarnath. The accommodation has individual Cottages with 6 beds at 750 rs per bed. We booked all the 6 beds to get an entire cottage to ourselves for 4 people at 4500 rs per night. We went straight for evening darshan after dropping the luggage at our cottage. The evening view of the temple was enchanting as the kedar dome behind the temple glittered like gold under the last light of the day. The evening aarti was magical enough to make an atheist believe in god. The place went below the freezing point as the night started to creep in. Just before the midnight, i ventured out to catch a glimpse of the deserted ancient religious symbol. The sight was unquestionably unique to be sketched in my memory for the lifetime. The mountains behind the temple were shining white in the moonlight and the temple itself was illuminating under the artificial yellow lights. For a while after clicking some memorable shot, i resorted to my accommodation as the cold become almost unbearable.

This day was entirely for the transit except for the Ganga aarti at Triveni ghat. It was a blissful evening seeing the vintage Laxman Jhula all light with a themed decoration. An equally satisfactory dinner at the nearby eatery.

Onward flight to Mumbai.

Some observations and suggestions:

1) Late October just before the Kapat band ceremony (closing of the high altitude temples during the harsh winter conditions) is the best time to undertake the Yatra owning to minimal tourist activity facilitating better resource availability

2) Mussoorie for Haridwar, Sayanchatti for Barkot and a day in Harsil/Gangotri instead of Uttarkashi should be given a thought if possible. I am sure it would a very different experience diverging from the usual Yatra path

3) Should break the tiring journey from phata to Badrinath at Chopta, it is really an unique experience. Though Chopta itself demands attest 3 days to explore the vicinity

4) Rishikesh should ideally be the last stop instead of Haridwar (not much to look out for) as offers the opportunity to explore white water river rafting and other adventure sports.

5) Don't get overwhelmed by the pony/palki vendors. Bargain till the last breath as there is always scope to save some extra bucks. For example we were quoted Rs. 2500 per pony and we ended up paying Rs. 800 plus added tips

6) keep an eye out for the helicopter booking commencement. It's the hottest selling commodity during the Yatra season. Even though there is a fixed fare determined by the government, the tickets from the back door sources sells as high as 3x the amount

7) A night stay at Kedarnath is must to completely soak in the divine energy of the place. Swargrohini cottages is the best option. A cottage contains 6 beds for 750 bucks each

8) The Himalayan Stag camps in Chopta treated us like at home. I would definitely endore them. Contact: Dharmendra 9756997985

9) We hired a private cab for 9 days journey with Shreya taxi, Dehradun. They are absolutely punctual and professionally sound operators. Ask for Guru ( our driver) if you decide to book with them. I inquired with numerous different agencies all across Haridwar and Dehradun but they had the best rates among all of them which didn't impact the high standards of service as one might imply

10) Fly in and out of Dehradun if possible, it would save at least a day and more importantly minimize the toll on your body due to the longer road journey

11) Don't miss out on the chance to take a dip in the hot springs, they are invigorating and helps with muscle relaxation

12) Kedarnath by trek is a long 16 km journey, start before sunrise if you want to make it before the dawn

13) Can't emphasize enough on carrying proper woolens even if you travel during the summer months. The nights are bone chilling any time of the year in the mountains

14) The helicopter services at Kedarnath provides the facility to carry only 2 kg of baggage along with you. Keep a smaller bag ready for that specific purpose if you wish to stay the night

Our ride out of Kedarnath was deferred for almost 4 hrs in the morning. We took the opportunity to go get one last glimpse of the temple and the surroundings. We also took a half an hour hike to the Bhaironath temple located at an elevation on the right hand side of the peaks surrounding the temple. It gave us a birds eye view of the surrounding valley and the entire settlement around Kedarnath, a closer look at how this place has survived the flash floods of 2013 and resurrected from scratch after such a devastating calamity. I went for the Deoriatal trek on the way to Chopta while my family had their lunch at Sari village. It was a quick affair as i completed trek in 2 hrs including a half an hour stop at the top besides the lake. I couldn't spot the reflection of Chowkhamba in the lake as it was a rather cloudy day but the lake itself was beautiful and placid as always to warrant my attention and affection. We reached Chopta just before the dark and checked into The Himalayan stag camps in Baniyakhnd some 4 km before the start of the Tunganath-Chandrashilla trek. The camps were well managed by a very fine gentleman Dharmendra. It took care of all our needs and not to mention the delicious dinner he served in the midst of those remote mountains.

We visited the temple early in the morning to avoid queues. The hot water spring in the temple premises which is usually quite soothing was shut down owning to a very high temperature making it unsuitable for human use. After this the plan was to trek till Vasundhara falls but looking at the paucity of time we limited out visit till Mana, the last Indian village on Indo-China border It's all out a tourist place offering sightseeing spots that charts out historical beliefs. It is also the only place on earth where one can spot the river, Sarawati before it vanishes into the ground. We left early afternoon from Badrinath for a night halt at Chamoli to break the long journey till Rishikesh.

This day was for leisure exploring nearby temples and other religious place in Haridwar. We took the cable car to Mansa Mata and Chandi Mata mandir located on two different hills opposite to each other separated by the river, Ganga. After witnessing the famous Ganga aarti at Har ki Pauri in the evening, we called it a early day to board a morning train to Delhi.

Chandrashila Trek

I started alone early for the Chandrashilla summit from the my camp quite early in the day. I took a shortcut till the actual spot from where the trek Tunganath officially starts and hence ended up sort of doing a mini unknown trek before the actual trek itself. The trail is well laid out with an easy to moderate level difficulty up till the Chandrashila peak. The accompanying vistas are enough to keep you engaged even if you are trekking solo. Numerous pony's tread along the path if one doesn't want to go on foot. It wasn't a clear day to spot the adjoining peak from Chandrashila as dark clouds began to crowd over the valley. I waited at the top to enjoy the shattering winds blowing across the peak. It was so peaceful until a group of noisy kids showed up as i decided to talk the walk back to the base. There are a lot of small eatery at the base which are an ideal option for a scrumptious lunch. I wondered all the good things Chopta alone has to offer for a wonderful mini vacation including a camp stay, an exciting trek and not to mention mind boggling hospitality. I waited for my ride towards Badrinath, one of four major Dham's according Indian mythology stories.

Day 1: Arrival In Barkot - Relish A Picturesque Drive

Altitude (Barkot): 1220 m

Distance: 210 km | Duration: 7-8 hrs

Barkot is a town in the Uttarkashi district

The ride passes through Mussorie and Kempty Falls

It is recommended to have lunch near Kempty Falls as good restaurants are not available henceforth

You will arrive at Barkot in the evening

Day 2: Yamunotri Dham Darshan And Back To Barkot

Altitude (Yamunotri): 3,293 m

Drive Distance: 36 km approx. (Barkot - Jankichatti/Phoolchatti)

Trek Distance: 6 km (Jankichatti/ Phoolchatti)

The trek is through a lush valley, dense conifers, rhododendrons, cacti, and numerous Himalayan shrubs.

Surya Kund - is one of several hot springs in the area.

Many pilgrims carry rice in a cloth and dip it in the hot water to get cooked rice.

The Divya Shila is a rock pillar worshipped before stepping into the temple.

After hot water dips and a peaceful mind, return to Barkot.

Day 3: Drive From Barkot To Uttarkashi, An Ancient Spiritual Destination

Altitude: 1352 m

Drive Distance: 90 km | Duration: 4 hr

Uttarkashi is the hub of adventures and spirituality

Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM) is located in Uttarkashi

The town is considered comparable to Varanasi, which is also on the banks of the River Ganges.

One of the pious temples is the Vishwanath temple believed to be the oldest one. If you believe the literature of Skanda Purana, Uttarkashi is the home to Lord Shiva for Kaliyug.

It is also a part of the twelve Jyotirlingas.

Day 4: Uttarkashi To Gangotri And Back To Uttarkashi; Bask In The Mystical Essence

Altitude: 3,048 m

Trekking Distance: 100 km

Second Dham after Yamunotri

Gangotri is by far one of the world’s most eminent religious destinations.

Along the way at Gangnani take the chance to bathe in the Garam Kund

The Ganga River here is also called Bhagirathi

The revered Gangotri Temple was built by the Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century

The route is extremely tranquil through Moolgarh and Lambgaon

Guptkashi means hidden ‘Varanasi’ as per the Puranas.

Some people say that hereditary priests stay in GuptKashi in winter when the Kedarnath temple is closed.

Day 6: Trek To Kedarnath; Journey To One Of The 12 Jyotirlingas

Altitude: 3,553 m

Drive distance: 30 km

It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva’

Kedar is the synonym name of Lord Shiva who is both protector and destroyer

Kedarnath is also part of the Panch Kedar Yatra

Day 7: Descend From Kedarnath And Drive To Guptkashi; Leave With The Blessings Of Shiva

Visit the temple early morning by 4:45

Everyone can go inside the Garbha Griha and touch the idol

You can also prostrate with your head touching the deity, etc

Day 8: Drive From Guptkashi To Badrinath; Pay Homage To Lord Vishnu

Tapt Kund  is on the Alakananda River banks and it is compulsory to bathe in this Kund before stepping into the Badrinath Temple.

Narad Kund  is the pool where the Badrinath idol was discovered

Brahma Kapal  - a platform where rituals for the deceased are performed.

Sheshnetra  - it is a boulder 1.5 km away from Badrinath and has the impression of a snake.

Charan Paduka  - another boulder 3 km away from Badrinath that has an impression of Vishnu’s footprint

Maha Murty  - A shrine dedicated to the mother of Badrinath

Vasundhara  - a waterfall, 5 km from Badrinath

Mana Village  - near Badrinath, has attractions like Bhim Pul and Vyas Gufa

Bhim Pul  - on the other side of Mana village, a massive rock believed to have been placed there by Bhim forming a natural bridge.

Vyas Gufa - A cave near Mana Village, this rock cave is where Ved Vyas is believed to have composed the Mahabharata and the Pauranic commentaries.

Day 9: Badrinath - Rudraprayag

Distance: 160 km

Time to head back home after your Yatra

Usually, the devotees take a quick bath in Taptkund before starting the return journey

You can capture the tourist locations of Mana Village if you missed them yesterday

To Rudraprayag via Joshimath (Rudraprayag is a holy confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini)

Joshimath is one of the four ‘Maths’ established by Adi Shankaracharya

Day 10: Rudraprayag - Rishikesh - Haridwar

Distance: 160 km | Duration: 5 hr

The final destination of the trip is Rishikesh or the place of Sages

Chardham Yatra Route (4 Dham Yatra Travel Circuit)

Traditionally, the Chardham yatra is undertaken from the west to the east, thus, the yatra starts from Yamunotri, then proceeding to Gangotri and finally to Kedarnath and Badrinath. Pilgrims traditionally first visit Yamunotri and Gangotri and bring with them the holy waters from the sources of the rivers Yamuna and Ganga and offer abhishekams to Kedareshwara. Char Dhams of Uttarakhand are also known as Chota Char Dham of India .

Popular Route : Haridwar → Rishikesh → Deo Prayag → Tehri → Dharasu → Yamunotri → Uttarkashi → Gangotri → Gaurikund → Kedarnath → Joshimath → Badrinath .

Char Dham Tips (Things to Carry During CharDham Yatra 2024 )

• Carry a kit of the basic emergency medicines, Use bottled water during trip
• Eat Food which is boiled, cooked or fried, Carry a mosquito/insect repellent, Sunscreen cream
• Ensure you are physically and mentally fit to perform the journey as the Yatra involves trekking at an altitude of 1,4000 ft.
• At least a month before the Yatra, it is advisable to start preparatory exercises
• Carry heavy woolens, including thermal body warmers, raincoats, sleeping bags, blankets, water-proof shoes with sufficient grips, torch
• Women are advised to avoid sarees and opt for salwar kameez or trousers.
• Hire only a registered ponywalla or porter, Don't attempt short cuts on the route.

How to reach char dhams of uttarakhand.

Char Dham Yatra by Air Route – Dehradun to Yamunotri, Kharsali to Gangotri, Gangotri to Kedarnath, Guptkashi to Badrinath and Badrinath to Dehradun.

• From Dehradun you have to reach the government helipad on Sahastradhara road, the flight will take you to Kharsali and you will reach Yamunotri Temple.
• From Kharsali you will visit Harsil by helicopter where the Gangotri Temple is located.
• From Gangotri, you will reach Phata Helipad, where you can proceed to Kedarnath Dham
• From Phata you will fly to Guptkashi. From Guptkashi you will reach Badrinath Helipad, where you will proceed to Badrinath Dham.

Chardham Yatra by Road Route – Haridwar to Phoolchatti, Phoolchatti to Yamunotri, Phoolchatti to Harsil, Harsil to Gangotri and Uttarkashi, Uttarkashi to Guptkashi from New Tehri, Guptkashi to Kedarnath Via Gaurikund, Kedarnath – Gaurikund to Tilwara, Tilwara- Joshimath to Badrinath.

• The trip starts from Haridwar and you have to reach Phoolchatti via Barkot which is a beautiful hamlet amidst the Himalayan Mountains. The roads are safe to travel.
• From Phoolchatti, You will reach Yamunotri Dham .
• We will again come to Phoolchatti from Yamunotri to reach Uttarkashi.
• From Uttarkashi, you have to reach Harsil to visit Gangotri Dham , the scenic sacred realm of Goddess Ganga, Now return from Gangotri to reach Uttarkashi. From Uttarkashi, visit Guptkashi.
• In Guptkashi, arrive at Gaurikund. From Gaurikund, you can hire a pony, or doli to reach Kedarnath Dham , the holy abode of lord Shiva or you can also trek to the temple, its a 17 km distance.
• Return to Gaurikund to reach Tilwara. From Tilwara, reach Joshimath which is 170 km away. Leave Joshimath to visit Badrinath Dham .

Best Time to Visit Char Dham Yatra?

Char Dham destinations remain open for half a year from April to June to October or November. Due to the harsh climate and heavy snowfall, Char Dham sites remain closed in the winter season. The best time to visit Char Dham sites is the summer season (April to June).

Char Dham Yatra: Hill stations to avoid on weekends in summer

As reported earlier, the eagerly awaited Chardham Yatra of 2024 has already commenced, with reports indicating that more than 26 lakh pilgrims have enlisted for the pilgrimage. However, the sacred expedition has been marred by adversity for a significant portion of pilgrims. Accounts of extensive traffic congestion along the Gangotri-Yamunotri Highway have emerged, leading to prolonged delays and subsequent protests from disgruntled pilgrims. The congestion issue has become a focal point of dissatisfaction, with pilgrims urging authorities to take responsibility for the inadequate management of traffic flow.

Meanwhile, we have listed some of the hill stations that you can consider avoiding on weekends this summer.

Tucked away in the picturesque Uttarkashi district, Barkot is a serene hill station surrounded by lush green forests, glistening streams, and snow-capped peaks. Away from the hustle and bustle of crowded tourist spots, Barkot offers a peaceful retreat for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike. However, if you want to avoid the influx of tourists during the Char Dham Yatra, long queues at attractions, it’s better that you give it a miss for the time being.

Nestled along the banks of the Bhagirathi River, Harsil is a hidden gem in the Uttarkashi district known for its pristine beauty and tranquil ambiance. Surrounded by towering Himalayan peaks, dense pine forests, and apple orchards, Harsil offers a serene retreat away from the tourist crowds. This place falls on the way to Gangtori, as such this route will likely remain crowded during this time. Think twice before planning a trip to this place.

Located amid the breathtaking scenery of the Garhwal Himalayas, Chopta is a serene hill station renowned for its lush green meadows, pristine forests, and panoramic views of snow-capped peaks. Often referred to as the ‘Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand,’ Chopta offers a tranquil retreat away from the hustle and bustle of crowded tourist destinations. It serves as the starting point of the trek to Tungnath, and is on the way to Badrinath. Check out the advisories before setting out on a trip to this place.

Situated at the confluence of the Alaknanda and Dhauliganga rivers, Joshimath is a serene hill town in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. While it may attract crowds during weekends, there are plenty of offbeat trails and lesser-known spots where visitors can find solitude amid nature's embrace. En route to Yamunotri, you will be able to explore the serene beauty of Kempty Falls, which might also witness crowds given the current situation.
