25 Transformative Trips Every Guy Should Take

Paddle the Grand Canyon, kayak with blue whales, and come out a better man.

Most of us use traveling as a way to make memories, try new food, and make our Instagram feeds look cool, but travel can also be a lot deeper than just a vacation. If you choose your destination wisely, and then the voyage itself, the people you meet, the foods you sample, and the experiences you have will mean you've arrived in a whole new place—physically, spiritually, and philosophically.

Our purpose here is to squeeze the maximum amount of joy, hilarity, challenge, and accomplishment out of our allotted time. What better way to do that than to travel to places that won't just be a change of scene, but rather, can provoke a change in you? We've accumulated 25 transformative travel experiences that will do just that—maybe it's time to get lost, and find yourself.

Paddle the Grand Canyon

Burn Some Rubber

guy-trips-3.jpg

For the truest racetrack experience, skip the supercar challenges that cost thousands of dollars. Instead, hit the Bondurant High Performance Driving School in Phoenix. For groups of 8 or more, you can try the facility's Pro Kart Racing program , where you’ll race in their go-karts that go up to 50 mph.

Still have a need for speed? Try their Dodge/SRT Drag Racing program , where you can drive the world’s only drag racing course that features the 840-horsepower Challenger SRT Demon. Why: Apart from the thrill (and the sweet smell of burning rubber), you'll learn skills that could make you a safer driver.

Master the Art of Grilling

Steven Raichlen, the of Planet Barbecue! , teaches a 3-day barbecue course called Barbecue University twice each summer at the five-star Broadmoor resort in Colorado Springs. To Raichlen, barbecue is more than just an American obsession with fiery regional rivalries. It's a global cuisine. And his syllabus reflects that with recipes from Argentine steak houses, Thai street carts, and Korean BBQ joints.

This year, the course is heading to the Montage Palmetto Bluff resort in Bluffton, South Carolina, but it's already sold out. Keep an eye on Raichlen's website for the next dates.

Why: After Barbecue University, everything you cook on the grill—salmon, steak, vegetables, and desserts (like pear and raspberry crumble smoked in a cast-iron skillet)—will taste better.

Track a Tusker

The Chyulu Hills of Kenya—the inspiration for Hemingway's Green Hills of Africa—are where three national parks converge to protect lions, rhinos, elephants, buffalo, and leopards—the big five—and Masai warriors have become its conservationists and guides. C ampi ya Kanzi , a Masai-owned lodge here, combines luxury and wilderness. Game runs in open-top jeeps ensure that you see as much wildlife as possible, while daily hikes let you feel the pulse of the land. Why: A safari is a once-in-a-lifetime primal experience that connects you with beautiful, and often endangered, species.

Catch and Grill Trout

Stalking, hooking, cleaning, and cooking your own trout is a rite of passage. The Ranch at Rock Creek , in southwestern Montana, is "A River Runs Through It" country and the place to hone your fly casting. Ride into the Sapphire Mountains, spend the afternoon strategically positioning your fly in the watery path of wild rainbow, brown, bull, and cutthroat trout, and then grill your catch whole over the fire. Why: It's the Western movie fantasy of horses, fishing, and mountains incarnate.

Kayak with Blue Whales

The world's largest mammal can reach lengths of 100 feet (think three school buses) and weigh in at 200 tons—more than an entire herd of elephants. Hundreds of these leviathans winter in the Sea of Cortez, at a preserve off Baja Mexico called Loreto Islands Bay Marine Park. It's the only place in the world where you're likely to be able to paddle with them. Why: Sidling up to a submarine-size blue in your 17-foot Sea Quest Expeditions kayak will remind you of your place in the pecking order.

Make Some Wine

Think you know wine? Wait till you're standing among the vines at a Russian River Valley winery with a harvesting knife in your hand. Head to the Buena Vista Winery for their Winemaker for a Day experience, where you'll be able to blend your own bottle of red wine. The property is California’s oldest commercial winery, and you can also try their walk-in bar tastings, a museum tour, and a barrel tasting.

Why: Anyone can make beer. You'll gain a deeper insight into the art and science of what makes a great wine.

Climb an Oregon White Oak

Head to Oregon City, let your inner kids out, and climb up Pagoda, a 75' Oregon White Oak. As Tree Climbing Planet explains, the tree is perfect for training because it has "stout lateral branches for easy crown movement."

Tree Climbing Planet teaches its patrons how to recreationally climb trees, and you can opt for a day lesson or stay for a week to learn even more. As a reporter from Vice noted, some students get to comfortable being up in the air that they'll string hammocks between tree branches and literally sleep under the stars.

Why: It's fun, and you'll contemplate your own humble existence in the shadows of these giants that are the only native oak species in British Columbia, Washington, and northern Oregon.

Camp on a Volcano

The mountain might rumble, hiss, and spew fiery boulders at any time, your shoes will probably melt, and you can roast a marshmallow at the 8,373-foot summit of Guatemala's Volcán Pacaya . Most hikers do this trip in a day, but if you camp overnight on the volcano, you'll hear the lava roll through the forest crunching vegetation, and see it light up the night sky without another traveler in sight. Why: Where else can you walk up to globs of 2,000? F–plus liquid and see inside the earth's core?

Kayak the Galápagos

Going face-to-face with penguins, iguanas, blue-footed boobies, and sea lions trumps peering through binoculars from the deck of a cruise ship, which is how most travelers experience the Galápagos. You could also head to the islands with a tour group . Why: It's a time warp: Limits on development mean the islands look much as they have for eons, and the animals are every bit as innocent, inquisitive, and bizarre as they were when Darwin encountered them on his Beagle voyage 175 years ago.

Survive Alone in the Wild

You'll be stripped of your watch and cellphone. You'll carry no pack, sleeping bag, headlamp, or tent. And, after instructors at Boulder Outdoor Survival School teach you which plants are edible, how to find drinkable water, and other survival skills, you'll be guided into the red canyons of southern Utah. Toward the end of your course, you'll go on a solo expedition.

Why: You'll live in the moment. In fact, you'll never feel more alive or empowered than when you conquer nature using nothing but your wits, a poncho, and a big knife.

Save the World, in Person

There's a better way to protect the earth than sending a check to some green charity: Go there yourself. Hook up with a scientific expedition for a week to assist research efforts in the world's most biodiverse jungle. Earthwatch Institute organizes trips to different regions of the world, and you can choose from a multitude of voyages, from going to Uganda to help investigate threats to chimps, to heading to Bali to combat plastic pollution.

Why: You'll see things you never imagined, and make a hands-on difference in protecting the planet.

Canoe the Maine Woods

A weeklong canoe trip on the Allagash River has been a classic wilderness expedition since Thoreau did it in 1846, 1853, and 1857 for his book The Maine Woods . A roughly 100-mile stretch in the state's northern tip is still untamed and now protected. It starts at Chamberlain Lake, meanders through thick pine forests skirting desolate ponds, rushes down a 9-mile stretch of Class II rapids, and emerges at Allagash Village.

Why: The rhythm of the river and the sounds of the forest will reboot your priorities.

Fly Across the Waves

Reliable 15 to 25 mph winds riffle the shallows of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which stretches for more than 70 miles on North Carolina's narrow Outer Banks, making it the ideal beach to learn to kitesurf . The sport, which is a hybrid of surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, and kiting, has a steep learning curve, but beginners typically start skimming across the water in 3 days. And on the off chance of a windless day, you can always learn to paddleboard.

Why: This is the closest feeling to soaring like an eagle.

Find Nemo (and His Supporting Cast)

The world's second-largest barrier reef, off the coast of Belize , brims with so much marine life that scientists have identified only a fraction of the species living there. It's home to the world's largest West Indian manatee population, 500-plus species of fish, 65 kinds of coral, and a jamboree of sharks, turtles, and birds. It's such a diverse ecosystem that it was named a World Heritage Site—and you don't even need scuba gear to appreciate its splendor. Just bring a mask and snorkel.

Why: The 185-mile-long reef, considered one of the world's seven underwater wonders, could soon go the way of Hanging Gardens of Babylon because it's under threat from warming temperatures and ocean acidification, among other factors.

Graduate from Fitness Boot Camp

Imagine a week on a tropical beach that leaves you trimmer and fitter yet still feels like a vacation. Southern California–based West Point graduate and international fitness champion Sonki Hong takes his fitness boot camp methods—which combine everything from plyometrics and beach running to body-weight drills and martial arts—to Waikiki Beach in the spring and Maui in the fall for 7 days each. You'll also be kayaking, swimming, surfing, snorkeling, and scarfing ultrafresh sashimi.

Why: Training fads wash in and out, but the discipline and fitness techniques you pick up in Hawaii will help you stay lean your whole life.

Trek the Himalayas

Hike the 150-mile trail around the 26,545-foot shark tooth that is Annapurna, and do it the way a local would, by eating and staying at teahouses in Nepalese villages. Going without a guide lets you set your own schedule, so you can spend an extra day or two in favorite spots. Why: Two reasons. First, large segments of the circuit are expected to be turned into roads in the next couple of years, adding unwanted company to the climbs up 17,000-foot passes and polluting the pristine Himalayan views. Second, every time you look in the mirror afterward, you'll see the guy who trekked Annapurna without a guide. For details on trip and route planning, pick up Trekking Annapurna , a book by adventurer Bob Gibbons.

Thunder Across the Great Plains

Galloping across the grasslands of South Dakota, Montana, and Idaho with a Lakota Sioux horse expert gives you a window into modern and ancient Native American life. You'll ride among herds of bison, see a wolf-recovery refuge, and visit the site of Custer's Last Stand and the Crazy Horse memorial. Why: It's the history lesson you never really had, and a way to connect with America's indigenous culture and people .

Dance the Samba at Rio Carnival

Most travelers simply watch at Carnival , which is actually a giant samba contest, but you can participate and groove your way through the streets surrounded by glamazons in feather headdresses. First, choose a samba school—Salgueiro won in 2009. Then plan to arrive several days before the event to practice your moves, laze on Ipanema beach, and sip caipirinhas.

Why: Every time you hit the dance floor in the future, it will be with a surer step.

Pedal into Copper Canyon

Moab meets the Grand Canyon 200 miles south of the U.S.-Mexico border, in the state of Chihuahua. The Copper Canyon is 20 red-rock canyons plunging nearly 10,000 feet to a web of rivers. The network of singletrack trails are courtesy of the Tarahumara, Native American long-distance runners who have been pounding the dirt here for centuries. Why: Riding to the bottom of the canyon and all the way back up tests your mettle and your quads, and instills a sense of awe for geological phenomena.

Skiing is a lot of fun and is a great idea for a guys trip!

2. Los Angeles Sports

Los Angeles in Southern California is home to ten (10!) pro sports teams and is one of the best cities in the world for championship-caliber sports. If you are looking for one of the best cities for a guys weekend, LA is your place!

If you and your friends love sports, then ditch the minivan and kids soccer for a weekend and head to LA! October is the best time to go – the weather is still warm enough to relax in the sun at Santa Monica Beach or workout at the famous Muscle Beach and hit up a few games in a single weekend trip.

Pick your Sport

Depending on the time of year, take your pick from NBA pre-season / early season, NFL , college football, soccer, and playoff baseball because they’re all going on in October.

A trip to Dodger Stadium would be a guy weekend to remember. A trip to the iconic Rose Bowl would feature Chip Kelly’s top-15 UCLA Bruins. Or there’s always a reason to catch a game at the Staples Center, with LeBron and the Lakers or Kahwi Leonard and the Clippers.

And on any given Sunday, you can catch a NFL game with either the Rams or the Chargers at the brand new, state-of-the-art SoFi Stadium.

A sports trip to LA with the guys is on of the best guys trip ideas to consider and is one truly worthy of any guys trip bucket list.

If you’re searching for a fun guys weekend, look no further than Lake Havasu City, Arizona.  This is one of the best guys trip ideas out there!

Less than a three-hour drive from Las Vegas, only 150 miles from Phoenix, and well-known for hosting the jet ski world finals (annually in October), this destination showcasing sparkling blue green water will not disappoint.

Rent Jet Skis

Rent some jet skis upon arrival (or feel free to bring your own) and stay at a   local Airbnb   or at the Nautical Beachfront Resort which offers an infinity pool with a bar as well as a private beach and boat launch.

Things to Do in Lake Havasu City

Visit the famous London Bridge and then enjoy a tasty dinner at La Vita Dolce Italian Bistro & Lounge, Javelina Cantina or Sho-Gun Japanese Cuisine (make hibachi reservations in advance).

Take a 25-minute ferry ride to the California side of the lake (only $2 round trip!) to the Havasu Landing Resort & Casino for a night on the town.  Another option is to enjoy a cruise on a paddler-wheeler boat.

There are endless ways to play outdoors during a long guys weekend in Boulder , one of Colorado’s favorite towns.

Rent Bikes and Explore

Rent bikes to take a brewery or distillery tour around town. Our favorites are Sanitas Brewing (where on-site McDevitt Taco Supply serves up some of the best tacos in town), Oskar Blues, and Ska Street Brewstillery.

Activities in Boulder Colorado

In the summer months, rent tubes and float down the Boulder Creek. During the school year, the University of Colorado is the place to be for all the college games. Visiting in winter? Take the 20-minute drive to Nederland to hit the slopes at Eldora Ski Area.

Hang out nearly anywhere on Pearl St. for the best food and mountain views, at restaurants like West End Tavern, Rio Grande, Avanti F&B, or Rosetta Hall.

Where to Stay

A stay at the outdoor-themed Basecamp Boulder (located right downtown) or at A-Lodge will add even more adventure to your guys getaway.

8. Yellowstone

If you are looking for the best guys weekend ideas, Yellowstone is a great choice. Camping at Yellowstone National Park is a great way to spend your guy vacation with friends. It's a good opportunity to get away from the norm and try something different.

I have some guy friends that do this multiple times a year. They love Yellowstone.

Why is it Awesome for Dudes

It's man vs the wild in a manner of speaking. Doesn't matter if you are an amateur outdoor camper or a hardcore enthusiast, spending time away from the city in nature really gives you some perspective.

Nothing beats hanging out around the fire in the starry night with some cold brews and your buddies to make some good memories. It is the perfect man vacation!

Where to Stay

I suggest camping at the Yellowstone Park / Mountainside KOA site.  It's about 8 miles away from the actual park with plenty of room to stretch your legs.

If you don't feel like camping in a tent, they also have cabins and enough open space to bring in your RV .  It can get cold though so remember to bundle up and keep that firewood aplenty.

Most Popular Sites

Yellowstone has some of the most majestic views. It's hard to pick just one popular site.  First and foremost, you should take part of your time to go see Artist Point which overlooks the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River. It's truly breathtaking with the majestic landscape and flowing river.

Old Faithful is also a go to. This geyser is a cornerstone of Yellowstone but if you don't get there in time to see it go off don't worry as it's known for its consistency. Just take a stroll around the trail for the next hour to see the other springs and geysers.

Get ready for the wildlife too. Don't be surprised to see a herd of bison just hanging along the road as you are making your way through the park.  Moose, Elk, Wolves, and Bears are also part of the Yellowstone experience but depending on when you go may be difficult to find.

How Much Time to Spend

You don't need a whole week to explore Yellowstone. If you are making good pace even after you're recovering from the previous night you can see most of it within 3-4 days. But don't feel the need to rush. You want to enjoy this as much as possible.

If you want to take a break and revisit civilization, go to West Yellowstone . There are some great food places along with souvenir shops and general stores.

Yellowstone is one of the best guys trip destinations around.

9. Utah National Park

A guys trip to the mighty five national parks in Utah is a great guys trip idea.  Southern Utah offers adventure unlike anywhere else.  It is one of the best man getaways.

If you would like a longer trip, you can then make your way to Capitol Reef National Park and do a little canyoneering.  There are lots of fun spots to explore.

Wrapping up your trip you can explore Bryce Canyon National Park and Zion National Park .  If you want an extreme guy weekend adventure you can get a permit to hike the Narrows.  Angels Landing is also a must-do hike at Zion.

A Utah National Park road trip is a perfect guys trip.

Alaska is the perfect guys trip!  It is known as  the “Last Frontier”. You can plan an Alaska trip from Denali National Park all the way to Kenai Fjords National Park .  There is adventure just waiting to happen at every stop.

Things to Do in Alaska

There are lots of things to do in Fairbanks , such as the Great Salmon Bake.  If you are a man with a big apatite,  this is the place you want to go.

In Talkeetna you can hire a plane to take you over Denali, river raft, and enjoy the local restaurants.

Awesome Guy Adventures

Anchorage offers some awesome guy adventures. You can bike along the coastal trail and hike in the mountains.  As you head from Anchorage to Seward on a road trip to the Kenai peninsula, there are scenic hikes, glaciers, and animal encounters along the way.

One of the most popular things to do in Seward is deep-sea fishing for salmon fish.  This is the best place to fish as there are many charters to supply and guide your trip.

Time to pack up and start planning a guys trip to Alaska!

11. Golfing

12. Weekend at the Lake

Renting a boat or jet skies and having fun on the lake is a perfect guys' trip getaway.  Make sure to get a lakehouse with a dock right outside of the house.  Some houses will also rent boats through VRBO .

13. Fishing

We mention fishing in Alaska which is incredible but there are a lot of great places in the US to fish that would make a perfect location for a guy's fishing trip.

You can go on your own or book a fishing charter to any of these great locations.

Top Places to Fish in the US

  • Florida Keys – Key West Florida
  • Outer Banks – North Carolina
  • Kona – Hawaii
  • Martha's Vineyard – Massachusetts
  • Big Horn River – Montana
  • Kobuck River – Alaska

16. Gorilla Trek in the DRC

Merely mentioning the Democratic Republic of Congo will probably send the girls running. For the guys, the Congo is one of Africa's most exotic and adventurous places perfect for a thrilling adventure.

Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking   in Virunga National Park is perhaps the most extraordinary wildlife experience on earth. Park rangers guide small groups of visitors into the jungle-clad volcanoes where these magnificent beasts live. Standing just a meter or two away from these gentle giants is an experience that you'll never forget.

After the gorilla trek, you could choose to climb to the summit of Mount Nyiragongo, an active volcano, to see the world's largest lava lake.

When you guys have had all your adventures, you can celebrate with a few ice-cold Primus Lagers on the shores of Lake Kivu.

How Much Time to Do I Need?

Plan to spend at least three days in Virunga to go gorilla trekking and climb the volcano. Add a few more days to indulge in the excellent nightlife in neighboring Rwanda, and you have yourself an epic African guy trip.

Lac Kivu Lodge in Goma is the best place to stay during your gorilla trek. The lakeside setting is excellent, and you're likely to meet exciting people (NGOs, UN staff, volunteers, peace corps etc) there.

You will probably want to look into guy trip packages if you are planning something this amazing!

This trip is sure to bring new memories that will last forever!

Next comes one of the most scenic stretches of road in the country, the Hai Van Pass (‘ocean cloud pass’), a 165 km stretch of road north of Da Nang. From there, continue down to charming Hoi An before hitting the beaches and sand dunes in the south.

Finish up in Ho Chi Minh City or continue to the Mekong Delta, the perfect place to end your trip cycling around the coconut groves.

Information About the Cycling Route

The route spans almost 2,000 km and takes anywhere between 1-6 weeks by motorbike depending on your pace (double it if traveling by bicycle).

Set aside plenty of rest days and extra time for exploring – there is no shortage of magical landscapes, trekking opportunities and cultural encounters to grab your attention along the way. This is a great getaway for the guys!

Best US Destinations For A Guys-Only Getaway

guy weekend trips

A guy's vacation is like a rite of passage to adulthood and the ultimate bonding experience. This kind of trip will never go out of style. A recent study even showed evidence that "bromances" are good for their health because make friendships increase the levels of oxytocin, the "love hormone" in the brain and make people happier.

Business trips with colleagues don't count. Plan a real getaway with your real friends. Pick a destination carefully; a trip should re-energize you, make you forget your troubles for a few days and relax you. The following destinations provide all that – plus joy, laughter and dare.

Louisville, Kentucky

Explore the bourbon capital of the world – Kentucky. This 5-day trip is a must for any bourbon admirers or anyone who would like to know more about this unique American beverage. You will visit nine distilleries and participate in several tastings so you can get feel the authenticity of each final product.

Go on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail. You will get an idea of the scientific process behind making this native to America spirit while also enjoying the stunning setting in the Bluegrass State. You can also participate in The Innkeepers Bourbon Selection with Dixion and learn about some rare bourbon that you won't find in stores.

There are plenty of other bourbon experiences in Louisville, Lawrenceburg, Bardstown or Clermont. Some even offer classes on how to cook your own bourbon.

Daytona Beach, Florida and Indianapolis, Indiana

If you are into fast cars, seeing Daytona 500 or Indianapolis 500 live is a must. These iconic racing events are held on weekends so you can turn the experience into a trip. Daytona is also known as an awesome destination for bachelor parties. Enjoy the beaches, fish on the Sunglow Fishing Pier or visit the Daytona International Speedway for a track tour. As is the case with most beach cities, the nightlife does not disappoint. You'll have plenty of options for dancing, drinking and enjoying live entertainment.

If you're more into motorcycles as opposed to cars, consider an Appalachia road trip. Take West Virginia's Route 50, which is more popular as the George Washington Highway, and head east. You will eventually reach the Skyline Drive, a road on the bucket list of every traveler. It runs through Shenandoah and the Blue Ridge Mountains, which is where you will witness some of the most stunning views ever. You'll finally get the meaning of the famous saying that "Life is about the journey, not the destination." You can start from Front Royal and drive all of the 105 miles on the Skyline Drive. Waterfalls crystallize in the winter. There are many picnic areas along the route. Many prefer the Elkwallow and South River because of the opportunities to "meet" with raptors and many animals.

Silverton Mountain, Colorado

Heli skiing is expensive but the Silverton Mountain Guides have some packages that come at reasonable prices. They guarantee six runs during the day and have access to some of the best big mountain skiing in Colorado's San Juan range, close to Telluride and Crested Butte, which gets a tremendous amount of snow. They take the chopper up to Alaska, where Silverton Mountain Guides offer full week luxury heli skiing vacations.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Vegas is the ultimate guys destination, famously known for some crazy bachelor parties. America's Sin City is a must-visit. It has changed in recent years and many associate it with wild parties as opposed to gambling. The variety of bars, lounges and night clubs in this fun haven will blow your mind.

Ocean City, Maryland

This resort city has plenty to offer – boardwalk for awesome days at the beach and fun party nights. Don't miss out on some of the best seafood in the country. Check out Assateague's famous wild ponies, just 9 miles away. Hike "with" foxes and thousands of birds around you. The golf enthusiasts will be pleased too. Ocean City has some of the most challenging courses around.

Humboldt County, California

Test yourself and your friends and see which one of you can reach the top of 1,500-year-old, 300-foot-tall trees. The answer should be "no one," because doing so is illegal and you may get in a lot of trouble. Join a canopy tour and you'll actually get to climb some of them. A panoramic view of the Redwood National Park is totally worth it. Take a zip line tour for even more fun.

North Maine Woods, Maine

Why not go on a canoe trip on the Allagash River? You will get to live like people in the mid 1800's did. The ride starts at Chamberlain Lake and goes through pine forests and rapids. If you're not careful, this can turn into the ultimate survival experience. You'll definitely need your buddies with you then.

New Orleans, Louisiana

Mardi Gras, anyone? You won't find a place in the U.S. that celebrates it better. Enjoy some of the best food in the South, if not in the whole country, and great music clubs and bars. The atmosphere is unconventional but fun. For those of who need a few days of more quiet time, you'll like the fishing and golf opportunities.

Grand Canyon, Arizona

How does paddling through miles of powerful white waters sound? Extremely challenging and exciting. The whole trip can be more than two weeks long as you navigate the Colorado River through a deep canyon. You'll probably qualify to teach geology classes afterwards. Raft trips are also available for those who prefer a more conventional adventure. Many men go on long mountain-bike trips along the northern rim.

7 Guys’ Weekend Outdoor Trip Ideas That Won’t Disappoint

Men don’t get as much coverage in books and movies, but they need strong friendships just as much as women do. Studies show that maintaining close friendships is incredibly important for men’s mental and emotional health , so it’s critical to find ways to get together and have fun. One of the best ways for men to maintain friendships is to participate in trips and activities together—and when you’re ready to spend some time with the boys, there’s nothing like going outside.

These seven weekend trip ideas offer all the opportunities you could want to connect with old friends and make new ones all while taking in some Southern scenery. From whitewater adventures to revving up an ATV , these activities will leave you reinvigorated, connected and ready to take on anything.

Whitewater Rafting/Kayaking

guy weekend trips

Nothing brings friends together like the hair-raising challenge of steering a raft or kayak through some gnarly rapids. When you’re whitewater rafting, nothing else matters except the ability to work together and get through the rapids. It’s a guaranteed unforgettable experience, but make sure to do some research on any whitewater guide company and evaluate their safety standards .

Whitewater kayaking is also a good choice for more advanced paddlers who want a balance of teamwork and individual control. You and your friends should already be competent flat-water paddlers before attempting whitewater kayaking—but if you’re ready for it, it’s an adventure unlike any other.

Where to go: Chattahoochee Whitewater Park – Georgia Gauley River – West Virginia Cumberland River – Kentucky

guy weekend trips

Fishing is a classic way for men to unwind and engage in a little battle of the wits with nature at the same time. Grab some fishing poles, bait and a couple of friends and then spend a few hours catching dinner (if the fish in your area are safe to eat). Fishing makes a great activity for a camping trip or it can be the basis of a trip all on its own.

Fishing can also be done at many different intensity levels—from a fishing day trip to a nearby river all the way up to big-game deep sea fishing expeditions for serious anglers. Many popular fishing spots will rent equipment for the day, making casual fishing a relatively inexpensive way to hang out with friends. But fishing is also more rewarding the deeper you go into the hobby as evidenced by the passionate communities that surround fishing disciplines like fly-tying.

Where to go: Florida Keys – Florida Lake Fork – Texas Little River – Tennessee

Hiking/Camping

guy weekend trips

Hiking and camping are outdoor classics for a reason. These activities offer a way to enjoy nature closer to the way our distant ancestors did—on foot, with only the supplies you can carry on your back. For the truly adventurous, primitive camping offers a genuinely primeval experience, without bathroom facilities or other modern conveniences.

Just remember: pack it in, pack it out. Anything you bring into your campsite, from flashlights to food wrappers, should be packed back out again. Encourage your buddies to hold each other accountable and follow the principles of “Leave No Trace” when you’re on a camping trip.

Where to go: Pisgah National Forest – North Carolina Ozark National Forest – Arkansas Big Bend National Park – Texas

guy weekend trips

Interested in something a little calmer but that still offers a good way to get outside with the boys? Golf might be just what you’re looking for. A golf outing can occupy a few hours, a day or a full weekend, and it’s a great opportunity to socialize with friends. It’s also more exercise than you might expect, especially if you play a highly walkable course where you don’t need a golf cart to move around efficiently.

Golf can be a little pricey to get into between clubs, course memberships and various golf gear. But an entry-level set of clubs is within most people’s reach, and you and your friends can start off small by playing public courses. What’s more, many people play golf well into their seventies and eighties, making it an excellent lifelong investment in fitness and fun.

Where to go: The Ocean Course – Kiawah Island, South Carolina Peachtree Golf Club – Atlanta, Georgia Augusta National – Augusta, Georgia

ATV Trail Riding

guy weekend trips

Take hiking and add a whole lot of horsepower, and you’ve got ATV trail riding. This awesome outdoor sport allows a group of riders to tackle a trail from the back of a rugged all-terrain vehicle, making the perfect opportunity for you and your friends to experience the beauty of nature combined with the roar of an engine.

Make sure to obey all relevant restrictions and to use an experienced guide when riding in unfamiliar areas. It’s also a good idea to take along an ATV helmet communication system that will allow your group to communicate and stay safe while on the trail.

Where to go: The Ridge Outdoor Adventure Park – Springville, Alabama Hatfield-McCoy Trails – Appalachian Mountains, West Virginia Brimstone Recreation – Huntsville, Tennessee

Rock Climbing

guy weekend trips

Rock climbing offers some of the best exercise among the outdoor sports, which makes it ideal for men who want their outdoor adventures to help keep them in shape. Bouldering is good for a casual day trip, while big-wall climbing offers the expert-level thrills that serious rock climbers crave. What’s more, rock climbing requires serious teamwork and a high level of trust making it a powerful way to develop deep personal bonds.

Where to go: Chimney Rock State Park – North Carolina Red River Gorge – Kentucky New River Gorge – West Virginia

Endurance Events

Sometimes, getting your butt kicked a little bit is part of the adventure. If that sounds like a good time to you and your friends, try doing an endurance event or outdoor fitness boot camp together. Dozens of different endurance events take place every year around the U.S., focused on many different types of fitness and with tons of crazy events. Obstacle course events like the Spartan Race series are especially popular, and many of these have collaborative aspects that are awesome for forging strong bonds between friends.

Where to go: Anywhere these events take place

Maybe it’s a little cliché to suggest that bonding among male friends happens best outdoors. But after a weekend spent doing any of these activities, you’ll be reminded why nature offers such an effective way to spend time with the people who make your life awesome.

Austin, Texas is one of the most popular destinations for a guys weekend. With its cool and quirky atmosphere, Austin has something for everyone. From BBQ joints to football games, there's no shortage of activities to keep your group entertained. For those looking for something more adventurous, Twisted Texas Tour offers guided tours through the city's best attractions.

No matter what kind of guys weekend you're planning, it's important to make sure everyone feels included and has a good time. Make sure you plan ahead by researching local attractions and booking accommodations in advance so that everyone can enjoy their time together without worrying about logistics.

Examples Of Guys Weekend Trip Ideas

Since most guys weekend getaways are weekend trips, they are typically much more limited in scope than a mancation . That means that guys weekend trip ideas will almost exclusively take place Friday-Sunday. Here are some common guys weekend trip ideas that are popular right now.

These are primarily sailing out of South Florida and Los Angeles and are a great value for guys looking to relax in the sun and party while not having to worry about figuring out where to eat or spending more money than expected.

This is a great way to get a group of guys who live in different places together. For instance, you could have the guys travel to Chicago for a guys weekend getaway that might include pizza, craft beer, and a Cubs game.

Gather the guys and head out to a resort for a weekend of golf, fishing, or maybe both!

Maybe you want to spend a couple nights disconnected from technology, a weekend camping getaway with the guys can be a great way to relax and recharge.

What Are Some Other Names For A Guys Weekend?

There are many different names that people use to refer to a guys weekend. Here are a few common terms:

  • Man Trip - This name emphasizes the fact that this is a trip for men, and is often used for more rugged or adventurous trips.
  • Brocation - This name is a combination of "bro" (short for "brother") and "vacation," and is often used for trips where there is a lot of bonding and camaraderie.
  • Stag Weekend / Destination Bachelor Party - In the United States we refer to a trip based around a pre-wedding celebration for the groom and his male friends as a bachelor party but in the UK they use the term "Stag Weekend" for an adventure that goes beyond a simple "Stag Party".
  • Mancation - This name is similar to "man trip" and emphasizes that this is a vacation for men, often with activities like golfing, fishing, or camping. A guys weekend getaway is simply a shorter version of a mancation.
  • Boys Weekend - This name is a more general term that can refer to any trip where a group of male friends get together for some fun and relaxation, typically for younger men and more party related, similar to a Lads Holiday. May also be called a Boys Trip .
  • Bromantic Getaway - Some tourism marketing folks have tried to make this work and some younger guys that like the term "bromance" have adopted it. This would be a guys weekend getaway catering to younger men looking to party and hang out with the bros.

How Does A Guys Weekend Differ From A Mancation?

A guys weekend and a mancation are similar in that they are both trips taken by a group of male friends, but there are some key differences between the two.

A guys weekend getaway is usually a shorter trip, often just a weekend, and is typically focused on having fun and letting loose. Activities might include bar-hopping, going to sports games or concerts, and trying out new restaurants or activities. The emphasis is usually on enjoying some quality time with friends and taking a break from the daily routine.

A mancation, on the other hand, is usually a longer trip, often a week or more, and is focused on adventure, exploration, and bonding. Activities might include camping, fishing, white-water rafting, hiking, and other outdoor pursuits. The emphasis is usually on challenging oneself, experiencing new things, and building stronger connections with friends.

So while both a guys weekend getaway and a mancation are about spending time with friends, they have different priorities and activities. A guys weekend getaway is about relaxing and having fun, while a mancation is about pushing oneself and creating lasting memories.

During the autumn and winter months, a high-intensity Stockton Heat hockey game at the  Stockton Arena  should be on the agenda. For those who enjoy motorsports, the fastest quarter-mile NASCAR track can be found here at the  Stockton 99 Speedway . Make sure you end your day with a brew from the local favorite  Channel Brewing Co.

Central Coast  A guys' weekend getaway on California’s beautiful central coast would not be complete without a round of golf at a world-renowned golf course. Start your trip at  Pebble Beach Resorts , home to four renowned golf courses, world-class accommodation and dining. After a round with the pros, head down to the  Oceano Dunes  on Pismo State Beach and rent ATVs or Dune Buggies to get your heart pumping, and then cool off with a surfing session. If that’s not enough action for you, head down to  Camarillo  and skydive from 5,000 feet above the California coastline with  Skydive Coastal California , or fly above the Camarillo farmlands with an  ultralight aviation flight . End your trip with a brew in  San Luis Obispo  at  SLO Brew Lofts .

Los Angeles County For those looking to have a manly escape in Los Angeles County, make sure you stop at the beer mecca,  Torrance . The city has 11 breweries, including national beer award winners, and some of the best beer in Southern California. One of these breweries is  Zymurgy Brew Works , where the guests can make their own beer. While in town, make sure you catch some sun at the uncrowded, 1.5-mile stretch of  Torrance Beach .

Inland Empire  When you think about taking a guys’ trip to Southern California, you might think about catching some sun and hitting the waves on the beach. Well, you might be surprised to know that it is also a great place for winter recreation. A day shredding the slopes, paired with refuelling at the Bullwheel Bar & Grill or the Foggy Goggle, make  Mountain High Resort  an ideal guys’ getaway destination.

San Diego County Guys who are considering a sports-filled getaway are encouraged to plan their stay in  San Diego . In addition to catching the Padres play a Major League Baseball game at  Petco Park , San Diego offers the Sport of Kings twice a year at the  Del Mar Thoroughbred Club , an amazing range of golf course terrains and views, plus sport fishing on the Pacific. After an exhilarating day of sports, you'll want to head out for a night on the town. San Diego offers many choices including local bars, intimate live music venues, stadiums and amphitheaters, and Vegas-style nightclubs with multilevel dance floors and rooftop bars.

17 best weekend getaways in the US

Woman alone in ancient sequoia forest, illuminated

As an outdoors-oriented, music-loving road-tripper with itchy feet, I've taken many weekend trips over the past few years.

I've spent days cooing over otters and elephant seals in Morro Bay on California's Central Coast, I've explored Yellowstone National Park on horseback from the Wild West epicenter of Cody, Wyoming and I've danced the night away and eaten award-winning cuisine in Nashville.

But whether your preferred escape involves putting your feet up poolside or putting them to use on a mountain slope, there's a getaway guaranteed to restore your sanity and recharge your batteries.

Here are 17 camera-worthy weekend trips, ideal for chilling, adventuring or both.

Best getaways in the West

Cody, wyoming.

guy weekend trips

Immerse yourself in authentic cowboy culture at this epicenter of America's Wild West. Spend the morning at the Smithsonian-affiliated Buffalo Bill Center of the West, the afternoon exploring the authentic pioneer-era buildings of Old Trail Town, and finish it off with the Cody Nite Rodeo. A plus: Cody offers prime access to Yellowstone National Park , with the park's less-crowded eastern entrance just 52 miles from town via the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway.

For the fullest possible experience, stay at one of Cody's numerous dude ranches or take a trail ride at the Bill Cody Ranch.

Morro Bay, California

guy weekend trips

The quest for the perfect California beach town can't land you in a better spot than Morro Bay, tucked into a sheltered harbor where sea otters provide constant entertainment with their playful antics.

A working fishing fleet still heads out every morning to bring in crab, salmon and cod, while oyster beds line up just offshore, ensuring that the town's many seafood restaurants are well stocked with fresh catch year-round.

Just up Highway 1, the Piedras Blancas reserve is home to an ever-growing rookery of elephant seals. A boardwalk provides up-close viewing of the ungainly creatures as they mate, fight, give birth and nurse their young. The unassuming bayside hamlet is also supremely dog-friendly, with an off-leash beach and pups welcome in many cafes and restaurants.

Bisbee, Arizona

guy weekend trips

Clinging to the steep slopes of the Mule Mountains at seemingly impossible angles, the mining cabins, narrow alleys and 19th-century storefronts (and former brothels) of Bisbee make a memorable maze to explore.

Take a tour of the Queen Mine to learn about Bisbee's history as a fount of gold and silver ore and check out the numerous galleries and boutiques that have turned the town into a popular haunt for artists and makers.

There's no hike quite like the Bisbee 1000 The Great Stair Climb , which scales a 4 1/2-mile maze of stairs and alleys. Pick up a map from the Bisbee Visitor Center for a self-guided hike, or join the thousands who crowd Bisbee's narrow streets every year in mid-October for the riotous event.

Southern Oregon

guy weekend trips

If Ashland's world-renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival doesn't lure you to southern Oregon , the Britt Music & Art Festival in nearby Jacksonville might be the ticket. You'll also want to meander through the Applegate Valley, visiting farm stands and tasting pinots and chardonnays. Visit the former logging town of Grants Pass, where Victorian storefronts in the long-neglected historic downtown now house an up-and-coming arts district of cafes, brewpubs and bohemian boutiques.

The Lost Sierra, California

guy weekend trips

This little-known swath of the northern Sierra, bypassed by the hordes swarming Lake Tahoe and Yosemite, is an outdoor recreational paradise, particularly beloved by the hikers hitting the trails of the Lakes Basin and mountain bikers challenging themselves on rugged terrain made famous by the Downieville Classic championship bike race and festival.

Base yourself in the authentic gold rush town of Downieville, where the Yuba River plunges through the canyon just steps from the tiny town's wooden sidewalks, Western saloons and cluster of well-restored hotels.

There's big news for the future as well, as a 600-mile-long trail network of multiuse trails, the Lost Sierra Route , is under development to link the 15 small towns encircling the wilderness.

Mendocino County, California

guy weekend trips

Plunging cliffs, pounding surf, sheltered coves and one of California's most exciting – and undiscovered – wine countries await in this colorful region just north of San Francisco.

And while the picture-perfect village of artsy Mendocino may be deservingly well known, you'll have discoverer's bragging rights to hidden coves, recently opened hiking trails and the up-and-coming wineries of the Anderson Valley .

Go tide pooling at Van Damme State Park, hike the bluffs of Jug Handle State Natural Reserve, watch the sunset from the Mendocino Headlands and drive north to the authentic seaport of Noyo Harbor, where a cluster of seafood restaurants serve up the catch of the day right on the water, often with a live music accompaniment.

Your lodging choices match the eclectic environment, with options including treehouses and off-the-grid cabins in addition to elegant inns and luxurious boutique hotels.

guy weekend trips

Come to visit the two national parks, Arches and Canyonlands, that bracket this town, and stay for the mountain biking, hiking and hot food and music scenes that have made Moab a buzzy high-desert hub.

Mountain bikers come to ride the iconic Slickrock Trail and the ever-expanding network known as the Moab Brand Trails. The Colorado River appeals to kayakers and boaters who put in at the Big Bend Recreation Area, road trippers who drive the scenic Upper Colorado River Scenic Byway, and the campers who pitch their tents in the numerous campgrounds along the river.

Gunnison, Colorado, and the San Juan Mountains

guy weekend trips

Gunnison is the gateway to some of the most spectacular landscapes and recreational opportunities in the southern Rockies. There's the vivid slash of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, which lies 60 miles to the east, Curecanti National Recreation Area stretching for 42,000 acres just outside town and the ski slopes and mountain biking trails of Crested Butte and Breckenridge rising to the north.

Beyond its status as an outdoor recreation hub, though, Gunnison is gaining prominence for its rising food scene as creative young chefs transform the town's colorful 19th-century saloons and steakhouses into trendy cocktail bars, fusion-themed restaurants and farm-to-fork cafes.

Best getaways in the East

Rhinebeck, new york.

guy weekend trips

History lovers can tour the historic Wilderstein mansion, hikers can ascend the Ferncliff Forest Fire Tower, and food lovers will want to hit the farmers market and go apple and berry picking in this 300-year-old Hudson Valley village.

Don't miss the chance to get a sugar high at Samuel's Sweet Shop, a local institution owned by actors Paul Rudd, Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Hilarie Burton, and have a pint at pre-Revolutionary War Beekman Arms tavern, which once served Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr.

MidCoast Maine

guy weekend trips

Stay in Boothbay Harbor and attend one of Maine 's numerous nautical events, including Windjammer Days and the Tall Ships Festival. Drive Route 1, stopping at the string of tiny hamlets along the way, eating lobster at every stop.

The Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse is extraordinarily photogenic on its perch at the end of a causeway, but Maine has 64 more lighthouses to satisfy your camera after that.

Best getaways in the Midwest

The Windy City, the City with the Big Shoulders and the Last Great American City — Chicago's universally recognized monikers speak to the city's grit, spirit of invention, cultural elan and magnificent skyline.

Take it all in from the 103rd-floor skydeck at the iconic Willis Tower, which rises above what is, unquestionably, one of the world's finest collections of modern architecture. All the big-name architects are here — the skyscraper prototypes of Louis Sullivan, the modernist minimalism of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, the Prairie Style of Frank Lloyd Wright and the billowing steel of Frank Gehry's show-stopping Jay Pritzker Pavilion.

The city's world-class museums, like the Art Institute, Shedd Aquarium and Field Museum always take top billing, but also take time to explore the city's neighborhoods. Stroll around the leafy German enclave of Lincoln Square, graze on Scandinavian-inspired baked goods in eclectic Andersonville, or explore galleries and parks in the Mexican American neighborhood of Pilsen. And, of course, be sure to sample some of Chicago's iconic dishes — Al's Italian beef sandwiches, deep-dish pizza, Chicago-style hot dogs — and the city's boundary-pushing restaurant scene.

Mackinac Island

guy weekend trips

A pure slice of 19th-century Victoriana, located on Lake Huron between northern Michigan's upper and lower peninsulas, Mackinac Island charms with its timeless streetscapes, idyllic shoreline and lushly forested interior. It's well known for its hiking trails, historic forts and pedestrianized streets; cars are not allowed on Mackinac Island, so you'll have to park yours at the dock before taking the ferry to your resort and opt for cycling, walking or horse-drawn carriage rides during your visit.

For the quintessential Mackinac Island experience, stay at the iconic Grand Hotel . The charming resort — also known as "America's Summer Place" — is more than a century old and remains a beloved monument for Midwesterners. Just one of many superlatives, it's home to the world's longest porch, which overlooks the waters of Lake Huron.

Best getaways in the South

guy weekend trips

A trip to Nashville feels like a journey through American cultural history, from concerts at the Ryman Auditorium and the Grand Ole Opry to museums such as the Country Music Hall of Fame, the National Museum of African American Music and RCA Studio B.

But there's much more to do and see, from paddle boarding and kayaking on the Cumberland River and nearby Old Hickory Lake to taking advantage of the city's expansive bike-share network to ride through town or on the rail trails known collectively as the Greenway.

Then there's the legendary food scene where Michelin-starred chefs and James Beard winners garner accolades for Nashville's restaurants almost as often as musicians earn Grammys.

Fredericksburg, Texas

guy weekend trips

Bluebonnets may have put Fredericksburg and the surrounding countryside on the getaway map, but lavender, peaches and, increasingly, wine are the bounty that make this Texas Hill Country village an uber-popular escape.

The German immigrants who settled the area in the 19th century still make their influence felt in the lacy Bohemian woodwork bedecking local houses, the flower boxes lining the streets, and the wursts, aged cheeses and schnitzels on many menus.

The visitor appeal verges on the hokey, with streets named so that their first letters spell out A-L-L-W-E-L-C-O-M-E upon entering town and C-O-M-E-B-A-C-K upon leaving, but the welcome is real in the Texas-size hospitality.

With grapes now terracing the surrounding hillsides, you'll want to follow the Texas Wine Trail's Hill Country wine-tasting map or visit some of the many tasting rooms in town.

New River Gorge, West Virginia

guy weekend trips

America's newest national park, New River Gorge National Park & Preserve , is the biggest draw to this verdant swath of the Appalachian and Blue Ridge mountains, which has long lured adventurers to scale its sheer sandstone cliffs, cross 876-foot-high New River Gorge Bridge and raft the Class IV and Class V rapids of the New and Gauley rivers.

Long on vintage country charm and Southern comfort food, the gateway towns of Fayetteville and Hinton have become popular destinations for mountain biking and hiking as well.

Best getaways in Hawaii

North shore, kauai.

guy weekend trips

Join a snorkeling cruise along the Na Pali Coast, take a surfing lesson at Hanalei Surf School, hike the Kalalau Trail from its start in Haena State Park, spot rare and endangered native plants at Limahuli National Tropical Garden and watch the sun drop into the Pacific from the bluffs of Princeville, and you've only hit a few of the highlights of Kauai 's North Shore. You'll also dine on fresh-caught ahi, swordfish and mahi-mahi thanks to Kauai's thriving local fishing industry.

Best getaways in Alaska

Seward, alaska.

guy weekend trips

From its perch on the shore of Resurrection Bay, Seward operates as the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park, with visitors heading out each morning to take a boat tour along the park's glacier-studded coastline, go whale watching or kayaking on the bay and witness climate change at Exit Glacier, one of the park's highlights.

New Orleans

It’s often said that there’s nowhere like New Orleans–and that is completely true.

Spending a weekend in New Orleans ( or even a single day ) means lots of jazz, lots of delicious food (gumbo, beignets, po’ boys, muffulettas, and more–oh my!), and lots of good times.

Be sure to make time for a ghost tour to take a look at the more mystical part of the city (even if you’re not the superstitious type, I promise a ghost tour is worth it in NOLA!), and a bayou tour to check out southern Louisiana’s incredible landscape.

And, while it’s easy to have nothing but good times in New Orleans, you can (and arguably should) add more depth to your trip as well: consider a day trip out to somewhere like the Whitney Plantation to learn a bit about NOLA’s dark past, or even a Katrina-themed tour discussing the serious impacts of the 2005 hurricane.

Where to Stay in New Orleans

  • Best Western Plus French Quarter Landmark Hotel : The hotel itself is beautiful in that classic New Orleans way, and the (included) breakfast is varied and tasty. Best of all, this hotel is situated right on the edge of the French Quarter, meaning that all of the French Quarter and some areas beyond are within easy walking distance.
  • Omni Royal Orleans Hotel : Located in the heart of the French Quarter, this beautiful hotel is known for its gorgeous building, attentive service, and lovely ambiance–plus its ghosts. Yeah, that attentive service? It just may come in the form of the ghost maid who likes to tuck guests in at night!

Romantic Getaways in USA: Jackson Square New Orleans

If you’re hoping to soak up some fun in the sun during your USA weekend getaway, look no further than Miami.

South Beach is often considered one of the best urban beaches on the planet, and we’d have to agree!

Don’t limit yourself just to the beach, though: be sure to explore Miami Beach’s impressive Art Deco architecture, eat your way through Little Havana, admire street art in Wynwood, and check out the views from Biscayne Bay.

For those who want to experience some unique nature in south Florida during their trip, consider also planning a trip out to the Everglades–or if you have a few extra days, road-tripping your way all the way to Key West , the southernmost point in the USA!

Where to Stay in Miami

  • Hotel Impala : We love staying here! The room was clean, the shower divine, the customer service lovely, and–most importantly–the location on Collins Ave. was absolutely  perfect.  Located in the heart of the Art Deco district and a five-minute walk from South Beach while still offering a quiet place to sleep at night, Hotel Impala had a location you just can’t beat in Miami Beach.
  • The Marlin Hotel : This hotel offers the chance to stay in one of Miami Beach’s historic art deco buildings! Boasting a fantastic location on Collins Avenue, impeccable customer service, incredible reviews, and spacious suites, the Marlin Hotel is the perfect hotel for those looking for a luxury experience while also seeing a side of Miami Beach’s Art Deco history that not every visitor to the city gets to.

Dripping with Spanish moss and home to one of the most stunningly beautiful historic centers of any city in the United States, Savannah is the perfect place to head for a weekend trip : not too big, not too small, and positively packed with some of the best southern food you could ever hope to find.

Come here to wander through all 22 of Savannah’s remaining town squares, tour a house museum or two, pay a visit to Forsyth Park, and to wander along gorgeous Jones Street.

Shoppers will love all the boutiques on Broughton Street, River Street, and in City Market, and those looking to indulge their taste buds will find limitless incredible food in Savannah , from classic southern meals at the Olde Pink House to tasty ice cream at Leopold’s.

If you’re a former Girl Scout like me, or just interested in their history, be sure to also pay a visit to the home of the organization’s founder, Juliette Gordon Low.

Where to Stay in Savannah

  • The Marshall House : Featuring a popular included breakfast, a fantastic location in the heart of Savannah’s historic district, and phenomenal reviews, you can’t go wrong with a stay at The Marshall House!
  • Foley House Inn : Easily my favorite hotel that I’ve stayed in while in Savannah, the Foley House Inn is absolutely beautiful inside and out, and has a perfect location right on Chippewa Square.

The Best Things to Do in Savannah: Fountain in Square

Of all of the weekend getaways in the USA covered here, Asheville is one of the best options for a group divided on whether to visit a city or the great outdoors.

Home to an epic craft beer scene, the incredible Biltmore Estate, plenty of street art, and delicious food options, there’s no doubt that Asheville appeals to the city lovers among us.

Its location right next door to the Pisgah National Forest and Great Smoky Mountain National Park, however, make it a fabulous US weekend destination for outdoor enthusiasts, as well, and there are plenty of easy hikes near Asheville that allow travelers of all skill levels to enjoy the beautiful mountain setting.

No matter what your interests are, try to make time during your trip to Asheville to drive a small piece of the Blue Ridge Parkway–especially if you’re visiting in the fall and can enjoy the changing colors. Often considered one of the most beautiful road trips in the United States, it’s a sight not to be missed.

  • The Applewood Manor : Located within walking distance of downtown via a greenbelt trail, The Applewood Manor feels like it’s in a peaceful, quiet location–but it’s still in a perfect location to make the most of Asheville.

kate storm in a blue dress in front of the biltmore house asheville north carolina

Home to country music, hot chicken, street art, and plenty of barbecue, there’s no doubt that Nashville, Tennessee is an excellent place to let the good times roll on your weekend away.

While Nashville is extremely popular as a bachelorette party destination and for other girls’ getaways, large groups are far from the only types of travelers who will enjoy a weekend in Music City, USA.

The best places to visit in Nashville include visiting the Grand Ole Opry (both for the show and for the backstage tour!), checking out the Johnny Cash Museum, seeing the Country Music Hall of Fame, and exploring Gulch, the street art neighborhood home to, among many other things, the #instagramfamous Nashville wings.

Be sure to save some time to enjoy the city’s famous nightlife when exploring the best things to do in Nashville . Its tasty food is also an important ingredient on any Nashville bucket list –be sure to try the hot chicken at least once, but be aware of your heat tolerance before ordering!

Where to Stay in Nashville

  • Hutton Hotel: Book into this stylish hotel for your romantic trip, relax on the hotel balcony, or stroll 10 minutes to Music Row.
  • Virgin Hotels: Part of the Virgin Group and with all the luxury details you might expect, with plenty of red and white details.

Located just a couple of hours north of Savannah, Charleston shares a lot of similarities with its neighbor to the south: fantastic southern food, Spanish moss dripping from the trees, beautiful architecture, lots of history to uncover–but it absolutely has its own distinct personality as well.

Be sure to visit the beautiful and photogenic Rainbow Row, check out the tea-making process at the Charleston Tea Plantation, visit the gorgeous and interesting Angel Oak Tree, stroll through Waterfront Park and Battery Park, and check out City Market.

Those interested in US military history will no doubt want to visit Patriots Point to tour the former US naval ships docked there and Fort Sumter for its history (and views).

Even for non-military-history buffs like us, these sights can still be an interesting way to spend some time!

Beach lovers, don’t miss the chance to check out nearby Folly Beach!

Where to Stay in Charleston

  • Market Pavillion Hotel : This hotel is a stunning choice in the heart of the historical district. Rooms feature four poster beds and charming classic decor, but the hotel amenities are really special with a mosaic pool and even its own Executive Pastry Chef whipping up delicious pastries for breakfast.

Set right on the water with the dramatic backdrop of Mount Rainier, it’s no wonder that busy and beautiful Seattle is one of the most popular west coast weekend getaways in the USA.

A weekend trip is the perfect amount of time to eat your way through Pike Place Market, head to the top of the Space Needle, visit the famous Chihuly Museum, and  check out the fun and interesting Museum of Pop Culture.

Looking for interesting neighborhoods? Head to Fremont, where the self-proclaimed unofficial motto is “des libertas quirkas”, aka “the freedom to be quirky”.

Much like Austin, Portland proudly embraces its weirdness, celebrating the eclectic and bizarre in all possible ways–and that makes it endlessly fun to visit!

Bookworms like me will immediately head to Powell’s City of Books–I still think it’s the biggest bookstore I’ve ever visited–while foodies will want to head directly to the local ice cream obsession, Salt & Straw.

Voodoo Doughnuts, now with a few locations nationally, also originated here and remains popular with tourists (though depending on who you ask, not locals–for what it’s worth, we’d rate the doughnuts 7/10).

During your weekend trip to Portland, make time to visit the Japanese Garden and the International Rose Garden, especially if you visit when everything is in bloom.

Plenty of incredible parts of the Columbia River Gorge, including famous Multnomah Falls, are also within easy reach of Portland and deserve to feature on your list of things to do in Portland !

Where to Stay in Portland

  • Portland Regency Hotel & Spa : This historic hotel offers a hot tub, steam room, full-service spa, and other luxurious amenities that will truly make your vacation to Portland one to remember!
  • Portland Harbor Hotel: Located on Portland Waterfront is this luxury and stylish hotel. With beautifully designed rooms and a great restaurant, you are also well located to explore more of Portland.

Possibly the most iconic of all these weekend getaways in the USA, Las Vegas is a prime destination for short trips.

First-time visitors will certainly want to hit the Strip, even if only to check out the hotels, fountains, malls, and generally see what all the fuss is about–but there’s more to Vegas than the Strip (if you want there to be, that is).

Whether you want to hit the casinos to gamble and soak in some shows, check out Las Vega’s interesting (and far less touristed) downtown area, or get out and experience the fantastic natural highlights of the Southwest, Las Vegas has something to offer.

While the more-famous southern rim of the Grand Canyon is really too far away from Las Vegas to make a practical day trip, options like Valley of Fire State Park, Red Rock Canyon, and the Hoover Dam are all possibilities.

Where to Stay in Las Vegas

  • The Venetian: As one of the most iconic hotels on the Las Vegas strip this is a fabulous choice for your romantic trip. Everything about this resort is luxurious and huge, from the 1.2-acre pool deck to the in house shopping mall. Book a suite and feel like a real star.
  • Bellagio: Fans of the Ocean franchise will know this hotel and its fountains, although almost any Las Vegas fans know the fountain show of the Bellagio! Stay in this famous hotel for the ultimate treat.

Welcome to Las Vegas sign, one of the most popular weekend getaways in the USA

San Francisco

The city of hills, ocean views, and the famous Golden Gate Bridge is at the top of many people’s lists of best USA weekend getaways–and with an endless list of things to do that cater to all interests, why not?

Be sure to pay a visit to the touristed highlights that most interest you–Fisherman’s Wharf (and its adorable sea lions!), Alcatraz, walking across the Golden Gate Bridge, visiting the Painted Ladies (of Full House fame), and checking out Lombard Street.

Once you cross those highlights off your list, though, make time for a few less-obvious attractions, like San Francisco’s Japanese Garden, the Land’s End Labyrinth, and Fort Point.

And, of course, you can’t forget to go for a walk in the woods while visiting San Francisco: the Muir Woods are an unforgettable experience worthy of your time on any weekend trip to the area!

Where to Stay in San Francisco

  • Petit Auberge: This adorable hotel in Nob Hill is the perfect place to base yourself for a romantic trip. Styled like a French Auberge with cozy furnishings and fireplaces in the rooms, opening onto pretty terraces, the hotel also has private parking. Essential in the city.
  • Beacon Grand: Opened in 1928 as a hotel for the creators of San Francisco society and recently reopened after restoration preserving architectural details and artisan crafts. Stay in a stunning piece of history and feel like a star.

New York City

How much of New York can you see on just a USA weekend getaway? Enough that you’ll want to come back immediately.

New York certainly can’t be “done” in a weekend–nor can it be done in a lifetime–but the great thing about New York City is that no matter who you are or what your interests are, whether you want to track down iconic spots, explore the best food in New York , see a show (or three), or discover offbeat NYC , you can find something to captivate you.

For tourists hoping for the classic NYC experience like we were on our first few visits, a weekend in New York is certainly long enough to see all those sights we’ve seen in movies and shows throughout our lives!

Central Park, Fifth Avenue, Grand Central, Times Square, the Public Library, a Broadway show or two, a visit to Top of the Rock or the Empire State Building, the Brooklyn Bridge–in a weekend, you can see all of that and more.

If you’re into museums, we also recommend hitting just one (no more–too much else to do!) during your weekend in New York: the Met, MOMA, and the Natural History Museum are all great, classic choices.

Where to Stay in New York

  • The Plaza Hotel : For a memorable place to stay, this is one of the most classic and luxurious hotels in New York. It is located right by Central Park, the Rockefeller Center, and some of NYC’s most popular museums.
  • The Renwick: Offering stylish residential style accommodation, this beautiful hotel is equipped with plenty of amenities and high class comfort. It is also a short walk to the Empire State Building and Bryant Park for exploring.

4 Day New York Itinerary: Manhattan Skyline with Brooklyn Bridge

Incredibly beautiful and steeped in both American history and its own distinct, modern culture, Boston is one of those cities you visit for a weekend and fall in love with for a lifetime (we would know–we’ve been crazy about it ever since our brief 3-month stint of living there!).

While you’re there, be sure to visit the picturesque North End, fashionable Back Bay, and grand Beacon Hill–three Boston neighborhoods you absolutely can’t miss.

Also consider strolling through the Boston Public Garden (one of our favorite spots in the city) and the Boston Common, visiting the penguins at New England Aquarium, meandering along the Freedom Trail, and hitting the water with a whale-watching cruise .

Bibliophiles like us shouldn’t miss the Boston Public Library (check out the Reading Room on the second floor!), nor Brattle Bookshop.

Sports fans, head directly to Fenway Park for a tour and/or a game.

2 Days in Boston Itinerary: Beacon Hill

Washington DC

Our country’s capital city is not only the seat of our national government, it’s also a fabulous place for a weekend trip in the United States, and an incredibly popular stop for visitors from other countries who are planning a trip to the USA !

Museum-goers will be delighted with the enormous array of impressive options to choose from in Washington DC–everything from the many Smithsonian Museums, to quirky options like the International Spy Museum, to meaningful stops like the US Holocaust Memorial Museum and the National Museum of African American History and Culture, are available–far more than you can visit in a single weekend.

Those interested in US History and government will also have plenty to keep them busy along the National Mall, including iconic stops like the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial, and those looking to enjoy the city’s magnificent food scene will love taking a DC food tour .

Touring the US Capitol is always an interesting experience, and if you plan ahead, you may even be able to tour the White House!

While DC has plenty to offer year-round, there’s no doubt that cherry blossom season in Washington DC is one of the best (and most popular) times to visit.

As a bonus, many of the things to do in Washington DC , including all of the Smithsonian museums, are free to enter.

Where to Stay in Washington DC

  • CitizenM Capitol : Another stunning example of CitizenM hotels is this location in Washington DC Capitol. Expect all the style and comfort these hotels are known for.
  • Riggs Washington DC : Located in the former home of Riggs National Bank this iconic building is now home to a classic and beautiful hotel. Rooms are huge and comfortable and offer views of Penn Quarter.

The self-proclaimed live music capital of the world, the home of the world-famous SXSW festival, and a city full of classic American charm with a country flair: when you’re looking for the best weekend getaways in the USA, it would be a shame to leave off the gem that is Austin, TX.

I have lived in Austin as both a child and an adult, and when I wasn’t living there, returned at least 1-2 times a year for most of my life due to family living in the area–and I never, ever get tired of visiting to tuck into a plate a delicious breakfast tacos, general TexMex, or barbecue.

During your weekend trip to Austin , head down to South Congress for fabulous food, eclectic boutiques, and incredible street art, and “Dirty Sixth” for some unforgettable nightlife (or alternatively, Rainey Street or Guadalupe Street for a different vibe).

Of course, this is the capital of Texas, so save some time during your weekend trip to Austin for some more typical cultural highlights, like visiting the Texas State Capitol and the historic (and possibly haunted) Driskill Hotel.

Plus, as Austin is surrounded by the stunning Texas Hill Country, no trip there is complete without going for at least one hike in Austin and taking a day trip to beloved nearby towns and wineries– Wimberley and Fredericksburg are both favorites.

Where to Stay in Austin

  • The Driskill: Originally built in 1886, The Driskill elegantly combines old-world charm with all of today’s modern luxuries. Dine at the award-winning on-site restaurant and enjoy the luxury of this iconic Austin landmark.
  • Hotel Saint Cecilia: This hotel set in pretty gardens is a great oasis in the city. There is an onsite pool with private bungalows, perfect for relaxing.

Visiting Chicago means it’s time for pizza, pizza, and more pizza… and okay, probably some sightseeing as well.

The sprawling city of Chicago, set right up against beautiful Lake Michigan, is certainly worthy of being included on any list of the best weekend getaways in the USA–and there are definitely plenty of fun things to do in Chicago to keep you busy while you’re there, including plenty of opportunities to explore the culture, enjoy delicious food, and even get outside in Chicago .

Come to Chicago for the weekend to snap selfies at The Bean, test your fear of heights on the famous Chicago Skydeck, pay a visit to Navy Pier, and of course, to eat a lot of deep dish.

Art lovers will find plenty of museums to devour in Chicago, including the incredible Art Institute of Chicago, and baseball fans will enjoy seeing the Cubs play a game at the famous Wrigley Field.

For animal lovers and family travelers, head directly to Shedd Aquarium (and for family travelers, make note of the American Girl Place as well–the highlight of my first visit to Chicago long, long ago!).

Where to Stay in Chicago

  • Warwick Allerton: Situated on the Magnificent Mile in Downtown Chicago, the hotel is perfect for shopping and discovering iconic architecture.
  • Staypineapple: This oddly named hotel was designed by a world renowned architect and features stylish details such as mosaic floors and marble ceilings. No detail is spared and rooms are a testament to the thought that has gone into each part of the hotel.

In May 2016, I left my suburban life in the USA and became a full-time traveler. Since then, I have visited 50+ countries on 5 continents and lived in Portugal, developing a special love of traveling in Europe (especially Italy) along the way. Today, along with my husband Jeremy and dog Ranger, I’m working toward my eventual goal of splitting my life between Europe and the USA.

Safely, Detroit is not on your list. Detroit is a fabulous city and Michiganders are very friendly and likeable.

Austin is not the country music capital — it’s the live music capital.

Well isn’t that an embarrassing typo for someone who has owned a Keep Austin Weird shirt for 20 years! Lol. I’ll get it fixed.

Very interesting

Or Madison… both have their own unique quirks that can keep a weekend enjoyable

You forgot Richmond Virginia, which would probably run circles around half of these cities on your list.

Not even close Tony!

absolutely incorrect

Umm Philly????

Will go on the list when we expand it! We love Philly. 🙂

Boise is an awesome city in the west too!

Love what you do, just curious, how do you make ends meet?

How did Dallas not make the list

Cause it sucks.

Great ideas, thank you!

Personally, I absolutely loved San Antonio what a great little weekend get away!

We love it too–one of our former homes and one of our favorite places to eat in the country!

Top 10 Guy Trips

Guys' trip

Bachelor parties, Father’s Day, or a big birthday celebration – there’s no shortage of reasons to get away with the guys. The next time you boys need some time off from the girls (ladies, you can check out our picks for the Top 10 Girl Getaways instead), skip the afternoon outing in favor of a full-blown guy trip! We’ve thought outside the sports-golf-beer-swilling box (though those vacations are all options, too) to round up the 10 best activities and destinations where you can hang with your bros. Think catching swordfish and marlin in Panama, smoking ribs and grilling steaks in Napa, and, yes, downing liters of beer in Munich, the capital of Oktoberfest (hey, it’s a cultural experience). Plus, we’ve hand-picked a package for each vacation destination, so you and the guys can plot your escape today. Get a preview of these dude-friendly destinations with our Guy Trips slideshow .

BBQ in Napa

Guys who think cooking is “women’s work” obviously missed the memo, because the majority of the world’s top-rated chefs are men. You may never own a Michelin-starred restaurant, but there’s no better place to learn the basics than the Culinary Institute of America ( www.ciachef.edu ) in Northern California’s Napa Valley. The C.I.A. offers a variety of culinary Boot Camp vacation courses, including a very macho grilling class that teach students how to grill the perfect steak, smoke ribs, and concoct an authentic Kansas City-style marinade – meaning you’ll be the ultimate barbecue man on the block in no time. If it gets too hot in the kitchen, steer your guy trip towards one of Napa Valley’s superb restaurants, where you can sit back and let someone else do the cooking, or enjoy the fruit of the vine at one of the Valley’s 400-plus wineries.

Book It: The C.I.A.’s location in St. Helena ( www.ciachef.edu/californi a) offers Grilling & BBQ Boot Camp courses in 2011 (August 29–30; November 16–17). The intensive two-day program is $895 per person and includes charcoal and gas grill orientation, lecture, hands-on cooking, one-on-one chef time, and your very own chef’s uniform. The school also has a more toned-down, half-day grilling course on barbecue basics for $250 per person (July 23).

Catch a Baseball Game in Boston

Even a die-hard Yankees fan can’t deny Boston's place in baseball history. The beloved Boston Red Sox (known locally as the Sawx) are such an integral part of the city’s identity that even ambivalence is considered blasphemy. Their fans are fanatical and their home, Fenway Park ( boston.redsox.mlb.com ), looks very much like it did when the first game was played there in 1912. The best time for a guy trip to see the boys of summer in action is – well, the summer – but no matter what time of year you visit Boston, you can always take a tour of Fenway Park for a behind-the-scenes look at one of baseball’s most famous franchises.

Book It: The centrally located Omni Parker House ( www.omnihotels.com ) offers an overnight deal on select Saturdays from June through September that includes deluxe accommodations and two tickets to a Saturday game from $221 per night.

See our Boston Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find the lowest rates on flights, hotels, packages, and more travel deals.

Drink Beer in Bavaria

There may be no better place on earth for beer lovers than Bavaria, Germany’s largest state. The capital city of Munich is home to the world-famous Oktoberfest ( www.oktoberfest.de ), but there’s plenty of sud-sipping to be done in Bavaria all year long. Beer gardens and beer halls abound, as do centuries-old breweries whose output adheres to the strict "purity" standards set forth in 1516. With so many places to lift a glass and say prost! , you might not have much time for sightseeing; but if you do take a break from imbibing, there are plenty of castles, monasteries, medieval villages, lakes, and mountains to explore. For more great guy trip destinations to throw back a few, check out our Top 10 Cities for Beer Lovers .

Book It: BeerTrips.com (www.beertrips.com/trips/oktoberfest.htm ) offers a 10-day tour of Prague, Munich (during Oktoberfest), and Bamberg this fall (September 14–24, 2011). The land-only price of $2,895 includes accommodations, transportation, brewery tours, and more.

See our Bavaria Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find the lowest rates on flights, hotels, packages, and more travel deals.

Golf in Ponte Vedra Beach

Unless you’ve whittled your handicap down to scratch, you won’t be playing on the PGA tour. Instead, guy trips to Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, can be rewarded with tee time at the TPC Sawgrass ( www.tpc.com/sawgrass ), home of The Players Championship. No matter what level you're at, playing a course that's as steeped in golf lore as this one is an experience best shared with the boys.

Book It: Priced from $499 per person (per night), the Sawgrass Marriott Golf Resort & Spa's ( www.sawgrassmarriott.com ) Stadium Package includes deluxe accommodations, one round at the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass, breakfast at Sawgrass’s Café on the Green, a caddy, 20 percent off a purchase at the resort golf shop, and other goodies.

See our Florida Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find the lowest rates on flights, hotels, packages, and more travel deals.

Off-Road in Death Valley

Former boy scouts looking for a wilderness camping adventure should plan their guys' trip to Death Valley, California, where deep-rock canyons, old mining camps, and the arid Panamint Mountains beg to be explored. See it all via 4x4 – and if you’re feeling really adventurous, spin your wheels in the sand of the Dumont Dunes ( www.blm.gov ), some of the tallest dunes open for off-road riding. Set up camp under the stars and test your survival skills, because you’ll be sharing the land with wild donkeys, coyotes, and snakes. Pack plenty of drinking water – about 2 gallons per person, per day – if you don’t want the park’s name to predict the outcome of your trip.

Book It: Western Adventures ( www.4westernadventures.com ) offers three-night guided 4x4 tours of the region starting in the town of Trona, California, and continuing through the area’s mountains and valleys (a $100 refundable deposit applies; participants are responsible for all of their own food, fuel, site fees, and personal expenses).

See our California Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find the lowest rates on flights, hotels, packages, and more travel deals.

Party Like a Sports Star in Las Vegas

Las Vegas is the ultimate spot for excess, a place where boys can be boys and indulge in the activities guys love: gambling, girls, and nightlife. The Hardwood Suite at the Palms Casino Resort ( www.palms.com ) will transform your trip into one of Hangover -esque history – think a basketball half-court and scoreboard, a massive hot tub, a full bar, and ”NBA-sized” beds. More basketball touches like a lavish locker room and jerseys are courtesy of Palms owner George Maloof, who also owns the NBA’s Sacramento Kings. Models wearing cheerleader and referee uniforms will even act as hosts for your special night. And if you're looking for ladies, we've got you covered – we recommended Vegas as a top girls getaway , too.

Book It: Nightly rates for the Hardwood Suite start at a whopping $25,000. Two master bedrooms and three extra-large Murphy beds, plus a living room, sleep 10. But if you’re just there to party, the max capacity is 350 – invite all your closest friends and get your game on.

See our Las Vegas Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find the lowest rates on flights, hotels, packages, and more travel deals.

Play Cowboy in Lajitas

Nestled between Big Bend National Park ( www.nps.gov/bibe ) to the west and the Rio Grande to the south, the rugged landscape of small-town Lajitas, Texas, can inspire even the slickest city slicker to don a ten-gallon hat, pack a pistol, and settle in for a heated game of poker with his pals. The best place to corral your inner cowboy is during a guys' trip the upscale Lajitas Golf Resort & Spa’s Badlands Hotel ( www.lajitasgolfresort.com ), which recreates a Wild West frontier town feel – complete with tumbling tumbleweeds and a wooden boardwalk, albeit with modern comforts and amenities. Resort guests can easily arrange outings into the great outdoors from hunting to hiking to horseback riding.

Book It: The 25,000-acre Lajitas Golf Resort & Spa offers a two-night Born to Be Wild package from $369, which includes deluxe lodging for two, daily breakfast, a bucket of beer and wings at the Thirsty Goat Saloon, a picnic lunch, and a river road map to help navigate the property's Old West terrain (purported stomping grounds of outlaws of yore). Complement your stay with some skeet shooting, a cowboy shoot-out (instruction on Old West-style guns is available), an ATV tour, or a sunset horseback ride.

See our Texas Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find the lowest rates on flights, hotels, packages, and more travel deals.

Spa in Chicago

Cubs-crazed Chicago is tailor-made for guy trips; but after you’ve had your fill of sports, pizza, and jazz, head out for a relaxing day at the spa. If you secretly love to be pampered, you’re not alone – about a third of U.S. spa-goers are men. Get a superb hot-lather shave, haircut, or your back massaged (or waxed) in masculine surroundings – think pool tables, brown leather chairs, and ’40s pin-up-girl posters – at the 316 Club Barber Spa ( www.316barberspa.com ). Don’t worry: If you have to miss the Cubs game because your skin is still exfoliating, you can catch it one of the numerous flat-screen TVs in the lounge and treatment "cabanas."

Book It: The 316 Club Barber Spa attracts guy’s guys with its players-club ambiance (free beer and wine, and a Vegas-style odds board). The Pit Boss package includes a massaging shampoo, haircut, hand massage and detail, five-step shave, and shoeshine, all for $95.

See our Chicago Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find the lowest rates on flights, hotels, packages, and more travel deals.

Sport Fish in Panama

If the only thing you know about Panama is that is has a famous canal, it’s time for a trip to Central America. Panama is full of surprises; that it’s an excellent spot for sport fishing is one of many. Grab the guys and head south for a “reel” good catch – Panama’s waters are home to swordfish, marlin, and even some shark species. Even if the fish aren’t biting, the landscapes alone are worth a guys' trip trek – exploring the country’s tropical rain forests and untouched beaches isn’t a bad way to spend a weekend with the fellas, either.

Book It: Go sport fishing at the edge of Panama’s remote Darien Gap at Tropic Star Lodge ( www.tropicstar.com ). Pricing from $2,850 per person (plus a $500 airfare transfer fee) gets you three meals daily, resort accommodations, and three to six days of fishing from aboard a captain-equipped yacht.

See our Panama Travel Guide for more trip-planning information, then use our Travel Search price comparison tool to find the lowest rates on flights, hotels, packages, and more travel deals.

Surf in Sydney

The “Man” in Manly Beach isn’t the only reason for its guys' trip allure. Known as the Bondi Beach of the north, this strip of Sydney sand attracts hordes of visitors looking to kick back and ride the waves (and perhaps steal a glance at topless sunbathers, a regular sighting on local Australian beaches). Bikinis (or lack thereof) aside, men who'd rather focus on the water can master killer waves by enrolling in a local surf school and learning from the pros. Plus, once the sun goes down, you can head out and enjoy Sydney’s legendary nightlife.

Book It: The Manly Surf School ( www.manlysurfschool.com ) provides programs with qualified instructors for beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels. Group lessons starting from $60 are available, as are private lessons from $90/hour.

The long way home - Prologue - 17500 km overland to reach my hometown!

Photo of Yubanaswa Chakraborty

On the 14th day of our travel, we were looking out of our train window and enjoying the view of the semi frozen lake Baikal. We were on a day long journey on a slow Russian passenger train. Everything moved backwards towards the west, slowly. Pine trees, snow on the ground. The towering snow clad peaks behind them.

We had come about 8300 km since we started. A little over half the distance we were covering. This is not my usual route to go home. This is not the usual route people travel from Europe to India. But this is one of the most feasible overland route to complete this journey. Although very few actually travel this way. Our inn keeper in the town of Listvyanka by the shores of lake Baikal told us - "The last Indian tourist I saw here was about five years ago"

Ever since I moved to London, I have been toying with the idea to travel overland to India, by means of public transport - i.e. trains and road transport. After years of waiting, I finally got myself to travel.

A weekend in Moscow – Tips : restaurants, rooftop, shopping and flea market

guy weekend trips

Shortly before Christmas, I spent a weekend in Moscow. From Berlin it is not too far, only 2,5 hours away and very cheap as well if you choose to fly with Aeroflot (totally fine airline). So below you will find my Moscow Tips for restaurants, cool rooftop bars and shopping tips at the flea market.

Where to sleep in Moscow on a budget VS luxury

A weekend in Moscow was totally fine to discover the city. We arrived on Friday evening. From the airport we took an official taxi to the city (super easy) and checked into our hotel : Vremena Goda . This hotel is nothing special but very central and not too expensive.

If you want a better hotel, Hyatt Regency at petrovsky Park just opened and it looks fabulous with Spa, and 3 bars and restaurants – including a rooftop bar.

What to see in Moscow?

– Visit of the cathedral of Christ the Saviour and the Kremlin, lunch at café Pushkin, shopping at Gum and Dinner on a rooftop

Early in the morning we decided to start with the must see attraction in Moscow. We walked to the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour and then visited the Kremlin . It took us a good part of the morning we then decided to go for Lunch at Café Pushkin . Café Pushkin is a popular café and restaurant in the center of Moscow. It is very classy and frequented by the rich and famous. Surprisingly, prices are not that expensive (count 20euros for lunch, drinks included), the location is amazing and it is the best place to test Russian specialities. I ate the Russian selection that is a mix of different Russian specialities.

guy weekend trips

Later that day we went also for shopping at Gum. Gum is a department store similar to Kadewe in Berlin, Galeries lafayette in Paris or Harrods in London. Definitely worth a visit. While on our shopping street we also strolled on Arbat Street that is a big shopping street going starting from the red Square.

Finally we ended up the day with dinner at Sixty, a rooftop bar an restaurant. Sixty is a great location but unfortunately the dinner was overpriced and not that good (100Euros for a caesar salad and a bottle of wine…) so I recommend to rather go there for a drinks only instead.

guy weekend trips

A weekend in Moscow – Tips for Day 1

On our second day, we woke up early in the morning and went to see the red square and the famous Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Tip : if you go that early you will have the square for yourself! No tourist everywhere 🙂

guy weekend trips

We then went for breakfast at Dr Jivago that is directly on the Red Square were I had caviar for breakfast. (I mean when in Moscow … why not)

Here again, the place is a bit posh with art pieces on the wall but the price was really affordable for Pelmini, Russian eggs and drinks we paid around 15Euros.

guy weekend trips

We then finally took the subway to go to the fleamarket a bit outside the center. Taking the subway in Moscow was easier than I was anticipating and is truly beautiful. If you have more time you can consider taking a metro tour that will take you to the most beautiful stations.

Anyway we took the subway to Izmaylovo market, the biggest flea market I have ever seen. At the entrance you can find many souvenirs and the more you get into the market you will find some great vintage finds. Furnitures, clothes, and many many treasures. A great way to discover Russia before the end of the communism.

We spent around 2 hours there but you can easily spend half a day f you want to see everything. The best is to go in the morning as many vendors close early.

guy weekend trips

It was then already almost time to go back to Berlin. A last stop at Eliveeski supermarket, the most luxurious supermarket that I have ever seen and then, back to Berlin. Short but intense and the perfect amount of time to get a nice impression of the city. I can’t wait to go back soon in summer 🙂
