How do i reserve a field trip.

Complete and submit the online reservation form . After your reservation request is submitted, if the date requested is available, an invoice will be emailed to the contact person submitting this form within five (5) business days.

How do I pay for my field trip?

Field trip reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis. A non-refundable deposit of $50 must be received 2 weeks after your reservation has been confirmed, to ensure your field trip date is secured. The non-refundable deposit is credited towards the total balance due. Reservations without paid deposits within two weeks will be canceled. A non-refundable deposit is not required if the reservation is paid in full within two weeks.

Payments can be made by credit card or check. Please make checks payable to “The Health Museum”, and include your invoice/sales order ID number. You may drop off your check at the museum or mail it to: The Health Museum – Reservations Department 1515 Hermann Drive, Houston, TX 77004

Final payments are due no later than 14 business days before your field trip. Reservations without paid balances will be canceled. If you are reserving a field trip within 14 business of your visit, the reservation must be paid in full upon receiving your confirmation.

If scheduling multiple reservations, a separate payment is required for each date reserved. If checks include more than one reservation payment, it will not be accepted.

Any chaperones not included in the reservation and paying separately will pay the regular museum admission. Museum memberships and guest passes/vouchers are not valid for field trip entrance.

If add-on labs are reserved with a field trip, and the full payment is not received 20 business days before the scheduled field trip, an educator cannot be guaranteed and the lab will be canceled.

Can I make changes to my reservation?

  • Rescheduling or changes can be made until 14 business days before your scheduled field trip. Changes must be made in writing via email to [email protected].
  • Schools bringing fewer students than reserved will be given general admission vouchers for each student who is paid for but not attending; no monetary refunds will be given.
  • Schools bringing more students than reserved will be expected to pay for the additional students and chaperones upon arrival. Space is not guaranteed, and accommodations will be made based on availability.
  • Vouchers, gift passes, Museum memberships, and general admission tickets cannot be used to pay for field trip reservations.

What if I need to cancel my field trip?

  • Cancellations must be received in writing by e-mail within at least 14 business days prior to the scheduled field trip date.
  • Any “no-shows” or schools that fail to cancel within 14 business days prior to the scheduled field trip will be billed for the full contracted amount of the reservation.

How many chaperones can I bring?

  • We require that K-12 schools bring one chaperone for every ten students. The required chaperones will receive complimentary general admission.
  • Each additional chaperone will be charged the adult group rate of $8.
  • Chaperones or parents who arrive and pay independently of the group will be charged the regular adult admission rate of $10.

Where do buses drop off and pick up students?

Bus pick-up and drop-off are on La Branch Street at the group entrance of The Health Museum. Bus parking is not available along La Branch St., but limited bus parking is available along other streets in the Museum District. For The Health Museum, we recommend trying to park your bus along Crawford Street next to the museum. Please give your bus driver this information so all our guests can safely arrive and depart.

Where do individual vehicles park?

If you will be arriving in individual vehicles, parking is available in our surface lot for $8 per vehicle.

Can we eat lunch at The Health Museum?

We do not have an onsite lunch facility, or an area for students to eat lunch. However, many groups bring a picnic lunch and eat across the street at Hermann Park or McGovern Centennial Gardens before or after their scheduled field trip. If you plan on attending the museum for more than 2 hours, please inform reservations in advance so that accommodations can be made.

Can I preview The Health Museum before our field trip?

We welcome all teachers to visit the Museum in advance of their scheduled field trip. We recommend attending a Teacher Tour or just visiting to find out what the Museum has to offer and how to use it in your classroom. We would also be happy to attend a faculty meeting or parent organization meeting to present our programs.

As a current member, will my FIELD TRIP reservation HAVE any additional discounts?

Memberships cannot be used for additional discounts on school field trips or group visits. For additional information please contact Reservations at [email protected].

How can I plan my trip prior to my visit?

Complete required school documentation (field trip permission forms, transportation forms, etc.). Secure chaperones, including the required emergency chaperone, for the trip and ensure that they are aware of arrival and departure times. Confirm your final headcount. Chaperones not included in the reservation and paying separately will pay the regular museum admission rate. And review field trip educator guide.

Day Before Your Field Trip

Assign student groups to chaperones (10 students per one chaperone required). Confirm the required contingency chaperone is ready with their own transportation.

Day of Field Trip: Arrival

Museum doors will open at 10:00 a.m. Please let bus drivers know to drop off the students and chaperones on La Branch St. NOTE: We do not provide school bus or motor coach parking. If you are running late for any reason, please contact the Visitor’s Service Desk at 713-521-1515.

Day of Field Trip: During Your Visit

  • All tours are self-guided.
  • Chaperones must remain with their students throughout the visit and are responsible for their group’s behavior.
  • For everyone’s safety, no running or rough play is permitted. Please emphasize the importance of using inside voices while within the museum.
  • If your group visits the museum’s gift store, please note that a maximum of 5 students (accompanied by a chaperone) are allowed at a time.
  • We want our visitors to enjoy their experience at The Health Museum and expect all groups to respect other visitors. If these guidelines are not followed, you may be asked to leave the museum. If this occurs, you will not be refunded for your visit.

Day of Field Trip: Departure

When your group is ready to depart, please call for your bus only when your entire group is at the bus pick-up area and ready to leave.

We thank you for joining us at The Health Museum. Have fun!

We took a great Texas History field trip in April during distance learning lockdown. We drove through Washburn tunnel, the largest vehicular tunnel in the southern US traveling under the ship channel. Less than 5 mins from the tunnel is the site of Santa Anna’s capture at a park that overlooks the ship channel. Less than10 mins from there is a historic cemetery named Crown Hill Cemetery that is also the site of a mass grave for Santa Anna’s Mexican army. Down the road from the cemetery is where Vince’s bridge was (there is a marker) which was critical in winning the battle of San Jacinto. We would have ended this day at the San Jacinto monument but it was closed at the time. It was a great little adventure for us! Enjoy your homeschool days, I am sure they will be full of fun and learning!

1. The largest crocodilian facility in the nation! Crocodilian species from around the world. Designed by educators for educators. Each area of Crocodile Encounter presents a different educational lesson and you always have a trained guide to present the information. Our guides are the best in the business and are great educators as well as very entertaining!

2. It's not all crocodiles. Even though crocodiles are what we are best known for students get up close with tortoises, snakes, lizards, kangaroos, antelope, and the American icon the bison!

2. Crocodile Encounter field trips are interactive, educational, and fun! Your students are never bored and the field trip is contained so no threat of lost students (Did we mention designed by educators for educators?)

3. You really don't need chaperones( but feel free to bring them along) as the kids are always paying attention and rotating from different areas and presenters in a manner that keeps them on task and learning. If your school includes chaperones in the school payment they receive a discounted admission! Otherwise they are welcome and just pay standard admission upon arrival to Crocodile Encounter. Classroom teachers are free with their class. (A rate of 1 teacher for every 20 students.)

4. Crocodile Encounter has 2 large pavilion's for your lunch as well as our snack area. Full restroom facilities with hand washing stations are also available.

5. We limit guest numbers daily to ensure a positive experience for both you and your students. Depending on your school's student number you may be the only group in the facility during your visit.

6. No visit is ever the same as we are constantly changing exhibits and adding species. Every year is bigger and better than the year before. Be part of the growth of a world class crocodilian facility!

7. Animals, animals, animals in an interactive, up close experience you students will never forget!

  • During the hot summer nights, you can head to Waugh Drive Bridge and see over 250,000 Mexican Free-Tail bats emerge from the caverns. This is a really cool way to teach your elementary students about bats, caverns, food chains, and local ecosystems. The general suggestion is to get to the bridge 15-30 minutes before sunset for the best viewing chances.

Middle School

  • Considered to be one of the country's great urban green spaces, Buffalo Bayou Park is the perfect place for Middle School students to come get some fresh air, have a picnic lunch, or take part in some outdoor recreation. There are places to walk, run, cycle, relax, and even skateboard!
  • Space Center Houston highlights all eras of American space travel through over 400 space artifacts, exhibits, attractions, and theaters. You will find the world's largest collection of moon rocks within the Starship Gallery (as well as the very cool Skylab Trainer Module), several spacecraft within Boeing's Independence Plaza, amazing shows within the 5-story Space Center Theater, and exclusive behind the scenes look at the Johnson Space Center with the NASA Tram Tour.

Student Groups will enjoy participating in a guided tour or curriculum-based workshop, all workshops meant to enhance ideas and perspectives and allow students to make the connection between art and everyday life.

  • Also known as the Geral D. Hines Waterfall Park, this is one of the most interesting landmarks you can visit here. This multi-story sculptural fountain serves as the cornerstone of Uptown Houston, sitting at 64 feet high and recirculates 11,000 gallons of water per minute. This is a great, FREE, place to enjoy the art and culture of Houston.
  • Follow the black granite band around the park and tour the artwork,  get a bit of exercise, relax, have a picnic lunch, shop the open-air market, eat at Niko Niko's sidewalk cafe, or spend some time meditating in Lauren's Garden...this is a great spot for high schoolers to get some time to explore on their own!
  • Often times referred to as 'Garage Mahal', this museum features artists who strive to show fundamental changes in our consciousness and an indication of independence we crave, all through the art of the autos. You will see art cars, low riders, and other interesting mobile contraptions, as well as various rotating art displays in all mediums.
  • One of the most cutting-edge art facilities in all of Houston, this museum considers itself to be the 'Gateway' between the university and city of Houston. Student groups of 10 or more can set up special guided tours, custom created to fit your particular topic or curriculum. After your visit, you may want to hang around the University of Houston for a campus visit, or just to grab some lunch! There's always time for a little college prep!!
  • Of course, one of the best field trips your high school students can take is to any of the many local colleges. Visit this page for more university info!

HISD abruptly moves end-of-year testing dates, leaving some schools scrambling to make changes

Houston ISD is pushing back its end-of-year Measures of Academic Progress Growth assessment dates two weeks to May 28-30, forcing some schools to scramble to reschedule field trips and other activities planned for those dates.

The district had originally planned the NWEA MAP Growth math exam for May 14, the reading exam for May 15 and the science exam for May 16. The district said in a statement Monday to the Chronicle that it had adjusted its assessment calendar as part of “HISD's commitment to ‘run through the finish line’” and “ensure every child receives excellent instruction every day.”

THE REPORT CARD: Subscribe to the Houston Chronicle’s weekly newsletter recapping HISD news

According to HISD, most elementary and middle school students will now take the exams from May 28 to 30, with the makeup exams scheduled from May 31 to June 5. Students at New Education System middle schools who are traveling to Washington, D.C. or Japan through the Dyad program will take the exams on May 21 to 23, with a makeup window from May 22 to 24, the district said.

HISD introduced the MAP Growth exam for the first time this year to monitor student performance throughout the year. The district’s students are scheduled to take the assessment for the third time next month after taking the beginning-of-year MAP exams in September and the middle-of-year exams in January.

The national, adaptive tests measure both academic achievement and growth using a RIT, or Rasch Unit, score ranging from 100 to 350. The exam also assigns students an achievement percentile that shows how they did compared with a “norm group,” which is a separate large group of diverse students who have also taken the test.

HISD EXAM GUIDE: Here's our guide to the tests students are taking this spring

In response to community concerns over the new exam dates potentially interfering with scheduled events or activities such as field trips, HISD wrote that schools will still have multiple days after the testing window for their end-of-year activities.

“There may be a few instances where schools have planned or invested in specific events that cannot be easily moved or modified,” the district said in a statement. “In such cases, principals are working with their division superintendent on solutions to accommodate both the assessment and the planned events.”
