State Champs
Over the past decade, Albany, New York’s State Champs have become a major player in the world of pop-punk, helping define the shape of the genre for a new generation of fans. And on June 10, Living Proof will push pop-punk forward.
Formed in 2010 by vocalist Derek DiScanio and guitarist Tyler Szalkowski, the pair began laying the foundation of State Champs in garages and basements throughout their hometown. The band’s lineup would shift a bit, but DiScanio and Szalkowski were always at the helm, crafting the band’s 2013 debut, The Finer Things, along with guitarist Tony “Rival” Diaz and drummer Evan Ambrosio. They’d add bassist Ryan Scott Graham the following year and, in 2015, they’d release Around The World And Back, a record that elevated State Champs to a frontrunner in the genre.
The band’s third album, Living Proof, will be released June 15 on Pure Noise Records, and it’s the most ambitious and cohesive work in the band’s catalog. “It was like, let’s take as many swings at it, try as many new things and experiment, until we get to the point where we could start searching through it all and then find the album,” says DiScanio of the writing process. After touring for Around The World And Back wrapped, the band returned to Albany, headed back into the garage, and started writing songs for what would become the framework for Living Proof. Getting back to their roots paid dividends, as the band had a new batch of songs ready, and once they linked up with the album’s producers, they wrote even more.
Living Proof was recorded in two different sessions with different teams assisting the band. The first session saw John Feldmann producing, who brought his knack for writing hit records—which he’s done for bands like Blink-182 and Good Charlotte—into the fold. But State Champs wouldn’t let their old-school roots die, teaming up with Mike Green and Kyle Black, the pair that shepherded Around The World And Back across the finish line. “If there was only one chance we had at beating the sound of Around The World And Back, we still had to have them involved,” saud DiScanio. With the recording process split in two, it allowed State Champs to write and record more songs than ever before, culling it down to the most potent batch possible. “At the end of the writing and recording process, we had 19 or 20 songs. We looked at each other like, ‘Holy shit. What the hell? This has never happened before,’” he said. .
Not only that, State Champs collaborated with some of pop-punk’s heaviest hitters, as the band co-wrote songs with Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low and Mark Hoppus from Blink-182. Though State Champs had no intention of working with Hoppus, the punk legend stopped by Feldmann’s studio while the band was recording and quickly took a liking to them Before long, Hoppus was helping the band write a pair of songs, working with DiScanio on the lyrics, and then jumping in the vocal booth to lay down some parts of his own. “We had no idea he was even coming in,” said DiScanio, “Then the next day, me and Mark Hoppus are just sitting out by John Feldmann’s pool writing lyrics from scratch. And that ultimately ended up being ‘Dead And Gone,’ which is the first singe on the record.”
This chance encounter speaks to what’s at the heart of Living Proof, and that’s DiScanio’s embrace of the things you can’t prepare for. “Living Proof has a lot to do with independence, and finding the independence within you, embracing the mixed emotions that fall in your lap a lot of the time,” said DiScanio, noting that the album’s title is taken from the song “Cut Through The Static,” where he proclaims, “Let’s cut through the static and be the living proof.” On an album full of go-for-broke moments, State Champs pushed themselves to new heights without ever forgetting where they came from.
“There are songs on this album about everything,” he said, “There’s break-ups, and flings, love, loss, all of that. I’ve seen a little bit of everything through this writing process.” Living Proof is a record about coming out the other side those experiences, both triumphant and humbled. That growth as palpable, as State Champs made a record that’s like nothing they’ve done before, but is still an an album that only they could ever make.

OKAY SO I SAW THEM FOR THE 1ST TIME AT WARPED TOUR 2018 AND WOWIE WOW THE ONLY BAD THING WAS IT WAS LIKE DOWN POURING AND THEY PLAYED "all we have is history" THE WE HAD TO GO STAND UNDER THIS COVER THING FOR LIKE AN HOUR AND I WAS LIKE "OH NO!! WHAT IF THEY CANT PREFORM THIS IS MY FIRST(AND LAST) WARPED I'MA CRY BECAUSE I ONLY SAW GRAY SCALE SO FAR" BUT AFTER THE HOUR THEY CONTINUED WHERE THEY LEFT OFF WHICH WAS AMAZING AND I BOUGHT THE "mine is gold" WIND BREAKER AND YEAH I'MA 5'5 13 YEAR OLD AND I DIDN'T HAVE THE BEST VIEW ALSO ITS AMAZING PLEASE SEE THEM BECAUSE ITS STATE CHAMPS AND WHO DOESN'T LOVE THEM????????????????? ALSO I'M ON MY LAPTOP BECAUSE MY PARENTS WONT GO FIX My PHONE BECAUSE IT GOT RUINED AT WARPED BECAUSE I MAYBE DROPPED IT IN A PUDDLE BECAUSE I GOT PUSHED WHILE RECORDING TANTRUM BY WATERPARKS AND I MISS SPELLED THINGS BECAUSE I LOVE STATE CHAMPS SO I WAS GOING OVER IT AND THE AUTO CORRECT WAS IN ALL CAPS TO I FEEL LIKE AWSTEN KNIGHT RIGHT NOW HELP ALSO IS ANYONE GOING TO SEE WATERPARKS AT THE HOUSTON DATE/ANY DATE PLEASE EMAIL ME AT [email protected] BECAUSE YEAH I NEED FRIENDS
Let me start by saying I drove up from Woodbridge, VA to see them. That was only my second time at the Sounf Stage and State Champs killed it. I loved that show so much. My glasses broke, I have a bruised nose and welt on my head from all the crowd surfers. I'm really short, I was stuck between tall people and pushed to the front. But i was raight there in front of Derek Discanio and that was the coolest thing. I had such a rad time. They really know how to put on a show and their live sound is something I haven't heard since the last classic punk show I went to. If I could I'd drive farther north to see them again. I hope they come back to the area again soon. That show was so rad. I had the best time. Thank you State Champs for starting my week off right.

State Champs Announce Kings Of The New Age Tour
All tickets go on sale at noon local time on Friday, August 19.
Celebrating what has so far been a monumental year, New York powerhouses State Champs have announced the Kings Of The New Age Tour.
Special guests Hunny and Between You & Me are joining the cross-country affair, with Young Culture (11/11 - 11/20), Games We Play (11/22 - 11/30), and Save Face (12/2 - 12/10) also joining for select dates. The tour kicks off in November in Cleveland, OH, and makes stops throughout the United States and Canada before ending in the band's home town of Albany, NY, in December. Tickets for Champs Fam fan club members are on sale now. All tickets go on sale at noon local time on Friday, August 19 at statechampsny.com
"I'm particularly excited for the KOTNA Tour because of how much we as a band are focusing on the aesthetic and flow of the show," says vocalist Derek DiScanio. "This will be the first tour where it feels more like an experience rather than just a band on stage playing songs. The stage production is by far the most unique and badass it's ever been, and you bet the mixture of songs in our catalog (new songs, old songs, and some surprises) will create a wild set list. Best night ever."
Earlier this year, State Champs planted their flag firmly in pop-punk history with their 4th studio album, Kings Of The New Age, out now via Pure Noise Records. The album includes hit singles "Eventually", "Everybody But You" (ft. Ben Barlow), "Outta My Head", and "Just Sound" alongside seven all new tracks featuring additional guest vocalists Chrissy Costanza, Mitchell Tenpenny, and Four Year Strong.
On the highly anticipated release, the band shares, "Kings of The New Age is our fourth album, the one that we spent the most time on, and the one that makes the biggest statement. After writing over 30 songs, we narrowed it down to 11 that best represent our mission as a band, and sonically, match the energy level we wanted to captivate heading into this new chapter."

Album four is often when a beloved rock band shifts gears, frustrating longtime fans, searching for a more "mature" sound. State Champs raise a joyous middle finger to that trope with Kings Of The New Age, an enthusiastic and confident reminder of what the Upstate New Yorkers do best.
Younger than Gen X punk heroes like Billie Joe Armstrong and Mark Hoppus; older than Willow and Trippie Redd; the foursome balances energy and experience. As a new generation resurrects angsty unrest on TikTok and Machine Gun Kelly puts guitars back on the mainstream chart, State Champs double down on the vibrant pop-punk they've championed for a decade. They were several steps ahead of the seismic sonic shift. Kings Of The New Age will now claim the crown.
Derek DiScanio, Tyler Szalkowski, Ryan Scott Graham, and Evan Ambrosio deliver a strong message. Produced by Drew Fulk (Lil Wayne, A Day To Remember, Ice Nine Kills) aka WZRD BLD, Kings Of The New Age is a big album, without sacrificing the heart cherished by a legion of fans.
Starting in bedrooms and basements in 2010, State Champs quickly ascended as leaders of a new scene owing as much to early Fall Out Boy and Green Day as latter-day Warped Tour bands. In 2022, Kerrang!declared them "one of the most authentic and well-respected bands in pop-punk." Over the course of their career, State Champs delivered their music and heartfelt message on extensive tours with bands like Fall Out Boy, 5 Seconds Of Summer, A Day To Remember, and Simple Plan; three different Warped Tours; and a co-headliner with Neck Deep.
Kerrang! gave the band's first album, The Finer Things, a rare 5K review in 2013. Rock Sound and Alternative Press served up adoring cover stories. Around the World and Back entered the Billboard Current Rock Albums chart at No. 3 and made Rock Sound's Top 10 Albums of 2015. Living Proof followed in 2018. Billboard called them "modern-day pop-punk torchbearers" the same year. They are an arena-ready rock band with the freedom of punk's soul. 2022 belongs to State Champs.

Cherie Amour
Cherie Amour, Baltimore, Maryland’s nu-punk pioneers, are utilizing an exciting opportunity for a fresh start. Previously known as One Life to Lead, Trey Miller (vocals), Casey Reid (guitar), Brendan Willis (guitar) and Ronnie Sherman (drums), felt that their group’s evolving style and sound deserved a name that matched their overall style. This evolved sound, one that steps away from classic pop punk and the idea of being a “Warped Tour Band”, helps clarify the band’s intended direction of carving their own path in the scene. The band’s long-term bond is easily detectable through the intricacy of their music. After ten years of friendship, Trey and Ronnie decided to officially form the band in 2015. A couple of lineup changes later, Brendan joined in early 2019 after meeting Ronnie through local shows, and Casey rounded out the group by joining in late 2019. Taking influence from a plethora of artists such as Linkin Park, Bring Me the Horizon, Don Broco and Dance Gavin Dance, the band expertly concocts new genre-blending recipes per track. The band tossed aside their worries of being pigeon-holed into one particular genre and embraced the self-proclaimed title of nu-punk. The group creates a blend of hip hop, R&B, nu-metal, and punk which is truly unique to the ear and will appeal to a wide range of listeners. Keep an eye on Cherie Amour – an extremely versatile band who is paving the way in nu-punk.

Attack in Moscow: What role does the band Picnic play?
A t least 137 people have been killed in the attack on the "Crocus City Hall" in Moscow. The Russian rock band, Picnic, was due to perform on stage on Friday. What does their performance have to do with the attack? On the evening of Friday March 22, at around 8 p.m. local time, the Moscow concert venue, Crocus City Hall, became the scene of a bloody attack -- the exact background of which is still the subject of speculation. At least 137 were killed in the massacre, while many others are in critical condition. They were all awaiting a concert by the Russian rock band Picnic, which was due to start at 9 p.m.
'Wash yourself with your own blood'
Russia has been in a state of shock ever since. While the whole world is expressing its sympathy, rumors and false information are doing the rounds. Four suspects have been brought before a court in the Russian capital. The four Tajiks were formally accused of involvement in a terrorist attack by the Basmanny district court on Sunday evening. They face possible life imprisonment. At the same time, people are wondering why the terrorists chose this particular event. Was the attack also aimed at the band Picnic?
"Fear nothing, fear nothing -- no fire, no ringing shadow. You are no longer a rosy child. Wash yourself with your own blood in the morning. And shake the blossoming day." These are some of the lyrics of Picnic's new song, which was released on March 7 on the band's YouTube channel.
Those lines sound almost prophetic, especially now in Russia. A message posted on the band's website reads, "We express our deepest sympathy to the families and friends of the victims. We pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. We are deeply shocked by this terrible tragedy and mourn with you." The band's musicians were unharmed because they were able to hide in the dressing room.
Picnic is one of the veterans of the Russian music scene, with origins in progressive rock. Founded in 1978 in St. Petersburg, which was still called Leningrad then, the band initially called itself Orion before changing its name to Picnic in 1981. Both monikers go back to the typical Soviet rock scene trick of choosing names that sound Western but cannot be banned.
In the 1980s, however, Picnic ended up on the list of bands that were denied major public appearances. The musicians and their audience therefore lived out their love for role models such as Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones in rock clubs, sometimes underground. Singer and songwriter Edmund Shklyarsky has been the band leader since 1982. The son of a renowned scientist and a concert pianist, Shklyarsky attaches great importance to his Polish roots and his Catholic faith. From an early age, his sources of inspiration were not only the Rolling Stones and The Animals, but also Russian avant-garde poetry.
Picnic members are considered war supporters
In May 2023, Russian writer and nationalist activist Zakhar Prilepin praised the band's leader. According to Prilepin, Shklyarsky actively supported the "special operation" in Ukraine, among others through monetary donations. Prelepin further presumed that this was the "normal position of a Russian man and a Russian musician" -- a statement that has neither been denied nor confirmed by the members of Picnic.
Their being booked to perform in venue as renowned as the Crocus City Hall in Moscow can be seen as proof of the band's loyalty to the Russian state -- which had demanded a clear commitment from the country's rock and pop scene, especially when the war against Ukraine began. Musicians and bands who positioned themselves against the war -- including Russian stars such as Boris Grebenshchikov (Aquarium), Yuri Shevchuk (DDT) and Zemfira -- had to leave the country and suffered career setbacks. Russian pop diva Alla Pugacheva has also sharply criticized the Putin regime from abroad.
On the other hand, stars loyal to the regime are rewarded with lucrative performances and awards. The approximately 6,200 tickets for the Picnic concert on March 22 were almost sold out, as was the planned second gig on Saturday. Ticket prices ranged from E100 to E300 and the band was to be accompanied by a symphony orchestra and a "spectacular stage and light show," at least according to advertising.
Even before Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Picnic was added to the list of artists unwelcome in Ukraine. The reason for this was the band's repeated performances on the occupied Crimean peninsula, including in Sevastopol.
The day after the tragedy, numerous interview requests, including from DW, were met with nothing but expressions of grief and shock. On Sunday, March 24, Edmund Shklyarsky released a video message. "I would like to express my condolences to all the victims and relatives of this terrible and senseless tragedy," he said, adding that no words have yet been invented that could resurrect people and comfort their fellow human beings.
Whether there's any special significance in the terrorists' choice to attack a concert by this particular band remains a matter of speculation -- as does the question of whether Crocus City Hall plays any special role as the target of the carnage.
A concert venue of superlatives
Crocus City Hall is a state-of-the-art concert hall on the grounds of an exhibition complex and is probably the most prestigious stage in Moscow among musicians. With an audience capacity of 5,000 to 10,000 people, it is much larger than a traditional concert hall and only slightly smaller than a soccer stadium. In short, a superlative venue in Moscow with no competitors.
Completed in 2009, Crocus, as it is known for short, quickly became one of Russia's most important concert halls. Located some 20 kilometers from the Kremlin, the venue can be reached within 30 minutes from the city center, depending on Moscow's notorious traffic congestions. It's faster for residents of the affluent suburbs in the west of the city, who prefer to attend the concerts there.
The excellent public transport links could have been an argument for the terrorists to choose Crocus City Hall for their attack. In addition, security precautions on the outskirts of the city are not as strict as in the center of Moscow.
Cultural events canceled in Russia
The concert hall belongs to the group of companies owned by the Azerbaijani-Russian construction tycoon and oligarch Aras Agalarov and his son Emin, a businessman and singer. There were rumors when the Crocus opened that Aras Agalarov had built his son a stage.
In recent years, however, Emin Agalarov has put his pop career on hold and concentrated primarily on the development and marketing of Crocus City Hall. Over the years, internationally renowned bands have performed here: Scorpions, Smokie, Pet Shop Boys, Nazareth and A-ha, as well as Sting, Elton John, Thomas Anders, Vanessa May and many others. In 2013, Donald Trump even strayed onto the stage, as a special guest at the final of the Miss Universe competition. But those days of cosmopolitanism are long gone.
A look at the program at Crocus City Hall gives a good insight into the sensitivities of Russian society, which oscillates between denial of reality and resignation: Concerts by regime-compliant musicians alternate with entertainment blockbusters such as Japanese drum shows or women's stand-up comedy. Now all major events have been canceled, not only in the damaged Crocus City Hall, but throughout Russia. Theaters, cinemas and museums will remain closed for the time being.

Parmalee to perform at UP State Fair Saturday August 17
ESCANABA, Mich. (WLUC) - The U.P. State Fair has announced the next act of its full line-up of Grandstand entertainment, presented by Island Resort and Casino.
The band Parmalee will take the Grandstand stage on Saturday, August 17. As the most-played group/band on Country Radio in 2023, Parmalee is one of country music’s most successful acts with four number-one singles, multiple platinum records, and more than one billion on-demand streams.
Comprised of brothers Matt and Scott Thomas (lead vocals/guitar and drums, respectively), Cousin Barry Knox (bass), and life-long friend Josh McSwain (guitar/keyboard), the North Carolina natives first topped the charts with “Carolina,” followed by their Platinum-certified number 1 single with Blanco Brown, “Just the Way.” They followed with “Take My Name,” which was Billboard’s Most Played Country Song of 2022.
They recently scored their third consecutive number 1 single with “Girl In Mine,” which is Billboard’s 8th most-played country song of 2023. Those three No. 1′s and 15 other tracks are available on their new album, “For You 2.”
Known for their distinct family harmony, irresistible melodies, and surefire radio favorites, Parmalee has not-so-quietly become one of the genre’s most undeniable contemporary country hitmakers.
Parmalee bandmates went through some tough times together in their earlier days. In September 2010, with “Carolina” a staple in their live shows, Parmalee was playing as many concerts as they could in preparation to come to Nashville and showcase for labels the following month. One night, the band performed a set for 15 people in Rock Hill, South Carolina, and made $15. They were traveling in an RV outfitted with bunks and parked at the venue. Scott was in his bunk when someone knocked on the bus door. Matt opened the door and was met with a gun to his head.
“Two guys in bandanas stepped into the RV screaming, ‘Give me the cash,’” Matt said. “I said, ‘I don’t have any cash. I don’t have any cash.’” The robber fired his gun in the RV. Matt shouted for Scott, who had his carry permit and his pistol tucked under his bunk. Scott emerged from the back to diffuse the situation and while taking out both assailants, was shot three times.
“So here we are at the highest point of our career, just thinking we’re going to get a record deal,” Scott said. “Then this all happens in a flash, and he’s on the couch bleeding out,” Matt added.
Scott was airlifted to a hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina, in the middle of the night and received two blood transfusions in transit. When his bandmates arrived at the hospital, they were told Scott had a five percent chance of survival. The drummer was in a coma for 10 days and spent another 30 days in the hospital recovering.
Five months later, he hobbled on stage to play a showcase with Parmalee for Stoney Creek Records – who signed them immediately. Matt summed up: “That is just part of our story - what we’ve been through and sticking it out.”
Gold Circle tickets for Parmalee’s performance on Saturday, Aug. 17 at 8 p.m. Eastern (doors open at 7 p.m.) go on sale on Monday, May 13 at 10 a.m. Eastern, and can be purchased from the presenting sponsor, Island Resort and Casino . General seating for all grandstand entertainment is free with admission to the Fair. To purchase advance gate admission for the U.P. State Fair, click here .

The Lemon Twigs: Band of brothers to play Gainesville on their world tour
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - The Lemon Twigs, a New York band formed by brothers Brian and Michael D’Addario, are gearing up to play in Gainesville on their world tour.
Despite the duo performing as a group for nearly a decade, this will be their first time in Gainesville, and the first time they’re playing a stretch of shows in the Sunshine State.
The band has garnered the attention of several big names in the industry, including Elton John, Iggy Pop, Flea, and Questlove, the latter who got them on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon for their first television appearance back in 2016.
The brothers have gone to work with Todd Rundgren, Jody Stephens of Big Star, and served as the opening act for Arctic Monkeys during their 2018 tour.
In January, The Lemon Twigs returned to Fallon to play “My Golden Years,” the first single from their latest album A Dream is All We Know. When TV20 asked them to describe the new album in 3 words, they both agreed on “Fun sun vibrations.”
Sean Ono Lennon, son of John Lennon, makes an appearance on the album, thanks to the brothers’ work on a project for their father and fellow musician, Ronnie D’Addario.
“{Sean} kind of asked around that time if we ever wanted to come up to his studio and just record and hang out. And we did and spent about 5 days there and we recorded like 3 songs,” says Brian.
Mapping their sound, The Lemon Twigs cite The Beatles and The Beach Boys as inspirations, with other artists like Gainesville’s own Tom Petty being thrown in the mix.
Michael adds, “I remember we watched {Runnin’ Down A Dream}. This really great documentary. That long documentary. I think more than Tom Petty himself being a huge influence on us, we have a lot of the same influences. We’re huge Byrds fans, and Bob Dylan fans, I love his sound though, and I guess we kind of meld stuff in the same way.”
The Lemon Twigs started their 2024 tour with two sold out shows in New York, and are making Florida stops in Sanford, Gainesville, and Tampa.
They play Heartwood Soundstage on Saturday, May 11th, with opening act Crystal Egg.
Here’s more from The Lemon Twigs interview with TV20:
