Thai beaches packing list

If you’re still considering what to pack, you’ll really just need beach attire and gear for visiting Thailand islands and beaches. Also consider activities and tours you’ll do.

Here are some items that will help your trip go more smoothly and comfortably.

  • Reef-safe sunscreen.  The chemicals in traditional sunscreens are killing our reef. I saw proof of it while snorkeling in Thailand.  At the most popular spots, the coral is bleaching; meanwhile the lesser-known snorkeling areas, the coral is vibrant. Always, always, always  wear mineral sunscreen  when swimming in the ocean.
  • Dry bag.  You’ll probably want keep some things dry during your time at the beach. I have a larger and smaller  dry bag that I travel with, depending on the situation. Keep your phone, back-up battery, wallet and more dry while you’re on a speedboat, long tail boat or at the beach.
  • Towel with hidden zipper pocket.  This is an essential travel accessory and goes with me on every trip! Store your keys, cash or phone in a zipper pocket which is well out of sight while you’re swimming!
  • Underwater GoPro.  This underwater camera will be one of your favorite ways to capture amazing vacation footage! Go snorkeling and see the amazing underwater world for years to come! This is the GoPro  I used in Thailand, and many other destinations for that matter.
  • Water shoes.  Most of the beaches in the Phi Phi Islands Thailand have beautifully soft sand. However, those sea urchins don’t mess around! Get a sturdy pair of  water shoes  and you’ll be able to double them up for hiking, too.
  • Rash guard  and  beach hat .  Protect your skin from sunburn and look cute in Thailand. Long sleeve rash guards  are so cute these days. Plus protect your face with a  sun hat .
  • Cash!  It’s one of the most important things on a Thailand packing list! You’ll want some cash for tipping (10% on tours is customary), taxi’s, attractions and even some restaurants.

Best beaches in Thailand

It’s time! While you read through this amazing list, picture yourself feeling completely relaxed while soaking up the sunshine and admiring the crystal blue waters.

If you want to really immerse yourself in the Thailand beach vibe, go ahead and make yourself a tropical drink while you dream about a future beach vacation 🙂

Are you ready? Here’s the ultimate list of the best beaches in Thailand!

1. Princess Beach, Similan Islands (one of the very best Thailand beaches)

thailand beaches and island view of white sand teal water island coast and boats

  • Nearest airport:  Phuket International Airport
  • Best time of year to visit: mid-October through mid-May (dry season)
  • Cost: $100-$120 USD (includes park and beach access plus lunch and snorkeling)
  • Amenities:  restaurants, gift and snack shop, bathrooms

Starting this list off with a bang! One of the absolute best beaches in Thailand is located north of Phuket, near Khao Lak, Phang Nga, Thailand . A quick boat ride will take you to one of the most underrated island chains in all of Thailand – the Similan Islands National Park.

Located on Koh Miang, island 4 in the chain is the impeccably beautiful Princess Beach. This ultra-white sand is soft as flour and practically perfect. While the Similan Islands Thailand are home to amazing beaches for lounging, swimming and snorkeling, Princess Beach is my personal favorite!

To get to the Similan Islands National Park, you’ll need to take a tour from Phuket or from Khao Lak. It’s about 45 minutes to an hour from Khao Lak, and more like 1.5 hours drive frrom Phuket to Khao Lak, then the boat trip.

Book your tour in advance so you get the day you want! Also be sure to bring a dry bag, mineral sunscreen for swimming and snorkeling, GoPro for underwater photos and the other items on the packing list up above.

The Similan Islands tour will take you to other islands and snorkeling spots as well, and each has their own unique attributes. It’s a fantastic adventure in Southern Thailand, and visiting the one of the best beaches in Thailand on the Similan Islands, it’s a day you won’t soon forget!

2. Silver Beach (sometimes referred to as Crystal Beach)

  • Nearest airport:  fly to Bangkok International Airport first and then take a 65 minutes flight to Koh Samui’s main airport Samui International Airport (USM)
  • Best time of year to visit:  The dry season is the best time to visit – December to May
  • Cost:  Free
  • Amenities:  Restaurants, massages

If you’re all about chilling out and enjoying one of the best things to do in Koh Samui , then you absolutely have to check out Silver Beach in Koh Samui. It’s pure paradise! This beach stretches for 273 yards and is simply jaw-dropping, with stunning rocks framing its edges.

Its tranquil, shallow waters are incredibly peaceful, making it a perfect spot for snorkeling. The water is so incredibly clear that even while swimming, you can catch a glimpse of the vibrant marine life swimming beneath the surface like the yellow-tail barracuda!

Silver Beach seafront does not have all the modern conveniences and amenities. However, the sheer natural beauty and the marine life more than makeup for it.  You can also treat yourself to a beach massage for just $8.23 (300 THB) or you can rent a kayak for some adventure and exciting family fun.

Side note: there are so many massage parlors throughout Thailand, that you’ll be able to find one at most places on this list! Gettin a massage (almost) on demand is one of the many things to know before traveling to Thailand .

There are no sun loungers here, so bring along a comfy beach towel . If you want to snag a spot under the shade of the lush trees, be sure to arrive early during peak season as it tends to get quite busy.

For the best place to eat, head to a gem called Silver Spoon . It’s located just a short walk through the resort to the main road. The delicious and reasonably priced food here totally makes up for the fact that it’s not right on the beach.

Keep in mind that the beach here has little pebbles that can be a bit rough on your feet so bring along some water shoes for this beach.

So, pack your bags, grab the sunscreen, book your room at the Silver Beach Resort for the best stay , and prepare for an unforgettable time at Silver Beach. This beautiful beach in Thailand is a slice of paradise that will leave you in awe.

3. Bamboo Island (also known as Koh Mai Phai)

beautiful beaches in Thailand view of white sand rocky beach with teal water on cloudy day

  • Best time of year to visit:  Nov – April
  • Cost:  400 THB / $12 USD
  • Amenities:  Restrooms & small restaurant

Bamboo Island is a beautiful and underrated island in southern Thailand with white sand and turquoise water . However, it’s a bit overshadowed by the world famous Phi Phi islands (and Maya Bay) since Bamboo Island is located very close to Phi Phi.

Also known as Koh Mai Phai, this island is a great place to relax and go for a swim after visiting the Phi Phi islands. The only way to visit is by booking a tour from Phuket or Krabi, or chartering a boat from Phi Phi Don island, but it’s a pretty easy trip to get there.

Bamboo Island is actually considered part of the same Thai national park as Maya Bay , so you do have to pay a park fee to land on the island, but it’s worth it. The whole island is like one big, beautiful beach! There are trees in the middle if you need shade, but the rest of the island is mostly sand.

Plenty of tours go to Bamboo Island, but it’s never as crowded as Maya Bay, and almost the entire perimeter of the island has soft white sand and relatively calm water. If you go for a walk, it’s usually easy to find an unspoiled part of the island with no people!

Bamboo Island is a must-see on this list of Thailand beaches!

4. Million Beach (a diver’s paradise)

palm trees on coastline white sand and clear water

  • Nearest Airport:  Bangkok (DMK or BKK)
  • Best Time of Year to Visit :  November to February
  • Cost:   Free to Access
  • Amenities:  Restaurant & Bar, nearby scuba & snorkel

Million Beach is more of a local’s secret than a beach that everyone heads to on Koh Kood. You will love the quietness and the breathtaking sunsets. It’s truly one of the most beautiful Thai beaches.

There are several places to stay here, the S Beach Resort is the closest to the beach and the moderately priced  Chor Chaba  is less than a 5-minute walk to the beach.

Million Beach on Koh Kood is free to access and there are no restrictions on bringing your own food and drinks . However, the Million Beach Bar & Restaurant is great for snacks and drinks if you do not pack your own. Their swings, bean bags, and tables are super comfortable and the sundowner cocktails are well-priced too!

One of the top things to do in Koh Kood is to go diving as the marine park here is glorious. The rental shop, Paradise Divers, is located right here near Million Beach. There’s some shored-based diving available and they’ll also rent you snorkel gear if you’re not comfortable scuba diving yet.

Million Beach on Koh Kood is rarely crowded and is great for families. The gently shelving beach here means you have lots of space and not a lot of deep water . With restaurants behind the beach, it’s a great place to spend your time on Koh Kood.

Koh Kood is a popular island with many weekend visitors traveling from  Bangkok to Koh Kood , but only during the peak season (November to February), in the off-season, there’s limited transport (buses + ferries) to get here. Be sure to plan your route accordingly!

5. Maya Bay (one of the most famous Thailand beaches)

beautiful view of Maya Bay Phi Phi Islands rock on white sand beach with teal water and limestone cove

  • Nearest airport:  Krabi or Phuket
  • Best time of year to visit: November – May
  • Cost: 200 Baht per person
  • Amenities:  National park gift shop, snack shop, restrooms

Alright so if you’ve seen any beaches in Thailand, you likely have seen photos of Maya Bay. It’s a truly stunning beach in the Phi Phi Islands archipelago. Made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio’s movie, The Beach , in 2000.

Located on Phi Phi Leh, which is a short 15-minute long tail boat ride from the main island in the chain, Phi Phi Don. You’ll need to hire a driver for the day, or take an organized tour to get to Maya Bay .

Maya Bay can be done as a day trip from Phuket or Krabi as well, but to fully experience these amazing islands I recommend staying at least 2 nights on Phi Phi Don. That will give you the chance to check out all the best things to do in the Phi Phi Islands , including visiting Maya Bay!

Maya Bay is situated in the Phi Phi Islands National Park, and is heavily protected these days from over-tourism. You’ll pay a fee to enter the park, and the park service is doing it’s best to restore nature after decades of harsh tourism, so there’s no swimming or snorkeling in Maya Bay.

It’s definitely worth the visit to see this incredible beach; it’s definitely worthy of a spot on this list of best Thailand beaches! Walk to the end of the beach to find a bit more seclusion from the crowds. With such a popular spot, expect it to be busy!

6. James Bond Island (a quintessential Thailand beach to visit)

phang nga bay thailand view of limestone cliffs and ocean

  • Nearest airport: Phuket International Airport
  • Best time of year to visit: Between November and February
  • Cost:  Ao Phang Nga National Park entrance fee is 300 THB / $9 USD, and a tour from Phuket costs 2,100 THB / $60 USD
  • Amenities: There are restrooms, also on the speedboat

When visiting Phuket , James Bond Island deserves a spot in your itinerary. This Thailand beach offers a blend of natural beauty and cinematic allure.

As you set foot on James Bond Island, you will see its iconic limestone karsts rising from the emerald waters. These rock formations were made famous in the James Bond movie, “The Man with the Golden Gun” .

Keep in mind that you cannot swim on James Bond Island. You’ll also find stalls selling souvenirs, so you can bring home a memento of your visit. After exploring the island, you will have the opportunity to visit the Monkey Cave and the Muslim floating village of Koh Panyee.

In close proximity to Phuket, James Bond Island is easily accessible for day trips. The peak tourist season from November to February offers the best weather with sunny days and temperatures ranging from 73 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit.

This is also the busiest period, especially around New Year’s. To avoid the crowds, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons.

This tour from Phuket offers a boat trip to James Bond Island, Monkey Cave, and Panyee Island.

For a comfortable stay, consider  Centara Grand Beach Resort  in Phuket. The resort boasts two outdoor swimming pools, a spa and wellness center, and for those traveling with kids a kids cl ub.

Preserve the beauty of James Bond Island by taking only photographs and leaving only footprints. Enjoy your adventure at one of the best beaches in Thailand!

  • Amenities: Many hotels, restaurants, and parking spots along the 5 km

Long Beach at  Koh Lanta  (also known as Pra-Ae Beach) is one of the most popular beaches on this pretty island. It stretches 5 km along the refreshing forest of pine trees. Though not very crowded, December and January get a lot of visitors.

Located about 5 km from Saladan village and the ferry port, it’s very easy to reach. The nearest airport is at Krabi Island and you can take a bus to Koh Lanta from here. Long Beach lies parallel to the main road of Koh Lanta, where you can see many backpackers’ hostels.

There are also plenty of options for cheap restaurants nearby. Enjoying a fresh fruit drink is possible from the several stands nearby.

What makes this beach fabulous are lovely sunsets and cute hotels around. T he fantastic choice for your cozy stay is Ser-En-Dip-I-Ty, which is a mid-range hotel . Layana hides at the southern corners as one of the most luxurious hotels.

The turquoise colors are so inviting at this amazing beach.  Weather is the warmest from November to March, which is the high season . The water is perfectly warm and during the night you can enjoy fire performances. Being so wide, Long Beach offers the perfect place to relax and have some solitude.

8. Kahung Beach, Coral Island (one of the most underrated Thailand beaches)

view of white beach teal water orange umbrellas

  • Best time of year to visit: November – April
  • Cost: tours to the island cost around $40USD / 1400 BHT
  • Amenities:  restaurant and bar, lounge chairs, kayak and paddle board rentals, restrooms

One of the best day trips from Phuket you can take is to Coral Island. It’s home to Kahung Beach, one of the most amazing Thailand beaches!

Located about a 20 minute speedboat ride from the Chalong Pier in Phuket, you’ll need to book a day tour to visit this stunning beach. You can do 1/2 day tours or full day tours. I’d recommend a full day tour to relax and soak in the sights!

The shoulder season is the best time to visit Kahung Beach, and Phuket in general. November and April you’ll typically see less crowds and experience this busy area in Thailand with more freedom to move around!

While you’re at Kahung Beach, Coral Island Phuket , be sure to take the kayaks or paddle boards out. Or take the snorkel gear and see what kinds of fish are nearby!

Kahung Beach is a very picturesque place too. The bar, swings, seating arrangements and signage is the perfect spot to grab a social media pic or video.

When visiting Phuket, don’t miss one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand – Kahung Beach at Coral Island!

9. Buffalo Bay (also known as Ao Khao Kwai Beach)

rocky shoreline with beach in distance blue water green shoreline

  • Best time of year to visit: November – April (Dry Season
  • Amenities: Hotels, Restaurants, Bars

Nestled on  the island of Koh Phayam  lies Buffalo Bay, or as the locals call it, Ao Khao Kwai Beach – one of Thailand’s best-kept beach secrets. Dubbed as “Hippie Island,” the entire isle remains unexplored by mass tourism.

With its crescent-shaped shoreline and clear turquoise waters, Buffalo Bay’s calm seas are perfect for lazy beach days swimming and snorkeling around . Those seeking shelter from the heat can find refuge under its tree-lined shores.

Two must-visit spots on this beach are Hin Talu and the Hippy Bar. Hin Talu is a rock arch formation that extends out over the waters of southern Buffalo Bay. Peer through the series of rock windows, the perfect setting for photography shots.

Then get out of the sun chilling at Hippy Bar, a giant wooden boat structure crafted into a maze of lounge seating. Walk along boardwalks and find hidden cabins at this open-air bar, accompanied by reggae music and welcoming vibes.

To reach Buffalo Bay, take a flight or bus to Ranong City. From Ranong, catch a speedboat or ferry to Koh Phayam, which takes approximately 1.5-2 hours. Once on the island, rent a scooter or hire a motorbike taxi to get to Buffalo Bay. No tour is required to visit the beach.

Buffalo Bay is relatively quiet compared to other popular Thai beaches. P lan a trip between November and April to experience warm, sunny weather with few downpours.

Visitors should note that Koh Phayam has only recently been connected to the power grid. As such, it is still prone to frequent power outages.

The Rabbit Bungalow is a cozy stay nearby after a day enjoying one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand!

10. Ta Yai Beach, Koh Larn (one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand)

best thailand beaches teal water rocky shore with sand and green hillside on coast

  • Nearest Airport:  Pattaya the U- Tapao. Bangkok is only a short 2-hour drive away and many people fly into Bangkok and then take a bus, taxi or private transfer to Pattaya.
  • Best time of year to visit:  December to February, when the weather is warm and dry. It is also very nice through April, just a bit hotter.
  • Cost of beaches in Koh Larn:  All of the beaches in Koh Larn are free to enter. Renting a beach chair will cost 50-100 Baht ($2-4) per chair. This fee also includes a water bottle and an umbrella.
  • Amenities: Beachfront restaurant & chairs to rent

One of the most amazing beaches in Thailand is on the small island of  Koh Larn . To best way to get to Koh Larn is by ferry boat from Pattaya. Head to the Bali Hai pier, and jump one of the hourly ferries to Pattaya. The boat ride will cost 30 baht ($1) cash and takes about 45 minutes.

There are 6 different beaches to visit in total, but the prettiest is Ta Yai Beach. Spending your day here is like being on the perfect tropical postcard.

Park in the big parking lot in front of Ta Yai Beach, and head down the flowered-lined staircase to your newly found paradise. The crystal clear water is shallow and perfect for swimming.

Most people who head to Koh Larn skip this beach for the bigger ones on the island. This means there are fewer crowds, more space to relax, and no beach vendors selling you things .

If you head to the back section of the beach you will find plenty of space to relax under the shade trees. There is also a beachfront restaurant with rental chairs. Or grab a few cold drinks to enjoy on your own.

When you arrive on Koh Larn you have two options to get around the island. Rent a motorbike for around 300 baht ($9 USD) when you get off the ferry, or jump on one of the baht buses around town. The island itself is only a few miles big, so you will have no problem finding your way around.

One of the best hotels to stay in on Koh Larn is the  C Villa on the Beach .  This beautiful seaside hotel is just a few steps away from the gorgeous sandy shore. They offer 5 different types of rooms and free sun loungers.

11. Long Beach, Phi Phi Islands (an absolute gem on this list of best beaches in Thailand)

Thailand beaches longtail boats on beach with sand and teal water looking down

  • Best time of year to visit: November through April
  • Amenities:  hotels, restaurants, restrooms

One of the absolute beautiful beaches in Thailand is Long Beach on Phi Phi Don. This underrated beach in Thailand is off the beaten path.

It’s away from the Ao Ton Sai Pier, which is the main departure point for most island visitors. From there, you have to get a water taxi (around $6 USD or 200 BHT) to Long Beach or walk 30+ minutes along the coast to arrive at this beautiful beach.

Once there, you’ll be greeted with soft sand and beautiful teal water. Water shoes aren’t necessary for swimming and enjoying this beach, although you’ll find some spots with coral.

Most of the beach is clear and available for public access. There are hotels with lounge chairs reserved for hotel guests, so be sure to bring your beach towel and sun hat to fully enjoy this beach if you’re not staying in a water-front property.

Right off the east end of Long Beach is the famous shark point. It’s basically a large rocky coral spot where Black Tip Reef Sharks are commonly sighted. If you’re interested, rent some snorkeling gear and swim out there in the morning or evening when sharks are most active.

The Phi Phi Islands are a really busy place, made famous by Maya Bay decades ago. There’s so many things to do in the Phi Phi Islands , and you’ll find some reprieve from the crowds in Long Beach – one of the best Thai beaches!

12. Bottle Beach (another underrated favorite beaches of Thailand)

white sand beach teal water and palm tree lined shore

  • Nearest airport:  Koh Samui
  • Best time of year to visit: December to March
  • Amenities : one small Thai restaurant

Nestled away from the crowds in Koh Phangan is Bottle Beach, a truly hidden gem! While the island is known for its full moon parties, Koh Phangan has another side, which is often missed by travelers.

Bottle Beach is the most beautiful beach in Koh Phangan – but it’s not an easy task to get there. There are a number of ways to get to Bottle Beach and each comes with a challenge.

You can  hike, bike, or boat to Bottle Beach . If you’re traveling to Thailand with kids, the best is to catch a local with a boat from Chaloklum (just make sure to arrange a pick-up time).

On the beach itself, there isn’t a whole lot to do besides enjoy the beauty for what it is: clear water, white sand, and laid-back vibes. Due to the difficulties for tourists getting here, you’ll also have a quiet beach (sometimes to yourself).

If you’re feeling extra adventurous, there is a nearby hike that overlooks Bottle Beach. Again, this hike is difficult to find and not recommended if you have kids. But if you can, it is well worth it for the view at the top.

Bottle Beach is one of the most beautiful and underrated Thai beaches, and worthy of the adventure getting there!

13. Kata Beach (a favorite on this list of best beaches in Thailand)

tan sand teal water and lush hillside with hotel in distance

  • Nearest airport:  Phuket International Airport (HKT)
  • Best time of year to visit: November to February (days are mostly sunny and dry)
  • Cost: Kata Beach is free to access
  • Amenities : Plenty of parking for cars and motorbikes, many restaurants and bars on the beach and close by with toilet facilities

Kata Beach  is located in the southern part of Phuket Island and is one of the beaches of Thailand worth visiting. It is approximately 47 kilometres from the airport and is best reached by taxi (most expensive but quick and convenient), shared mini-bus (cheap but long) or the Phuket Smart Bus (best value).

Kata Beach is split in two by a rocky headland: Hat Kata Yai (Big Kata Beach) and Hat Kata Noi (Small Kata Beach).

Both beaches are safe for swimming, however, take notice of the flags and notices put up by surf lifesavers to let you know if it is not safe to swim. On the right hand side of Hat Kata Yai there is a coral reef that goes out to Ko Pu (Crab Island) and this is a great spot for snorkelling.

The Kata area is home to the world-renowned Club Med Resort, so you will find it to be a little more upmarket than the neighbouring town of Karon.

In the centre of Kata, just a 3 minute walk from Kata beach, you will find lots of shops directed at tourists such as tailors, massage shops / spas, restaurants and bars. The restaurants offer a range of dishes from Thai to more western food options and are reasonably priced, although be prepared to pay a little more than in Karon or Patong.

Kata’s beautiful beaches, surrounded by green hills, is a major drawcard and as such, it appeals to travellers of all kinds.

However, if you’re looking for things to do in Kata other than spending time on the beach, you can visit the Kata Night Markets or book one of the many tours on offer to Phang Nga Bay, or a Phuket Island tour to see sights such as the Big Buddha and Old Phuket Town.

Here you’ll find no beach chairs, umbrellas, or food vendors; instead, travelers can walk for hours without encountering anything more than a few local fishermen. And the few luxury hotels keep a respectful distance from the beach and don’t ruin its natural beauty.

Like other places on the Andaman Coast of Thailand, t he best time to visit Mai Khao is between November and February , when you’ll find a calm sea, nice weather, and good swimming conditions.

Mai Khao is just a 12-minute drive from Phuket Airport, which is the only airport on the island. The beach is located right underneath the airport’s landing route and it’s a pretty impressive sight to see a plane with its wheels down just a few meters above the beach.

To visit the Sirinat National Park, you’ll have to pay a 200 THB entry fee, but access to Mai Khao Beach is free . It’s not necessary to book a tour, you can just drive there or opt for a taxi or Grab. Don’t count on public transportation though.

Stay at the JW Marriott Hotel Mai Khao for a luxurious resort away from the crowds – it’s a great resort in Phuket for families  and couples alike.

Krabi has some of the most picturesque landscapes in all of Thailand. Known for its limestone karsts that jut from the ocean or alongside a beach, these only add to the area’s natural beauty. Enjoy this brief list of the best beaches in Krabi!

17. Railay Beach (one of the most famous Thailand beaches!)

famous thailand beaches view of karsts alongside beach with teal water in Krabi Thailand

  • Amenities: restaurants, beach club at hotels

It’s one of the most famous Thailand beaches: Railay Beach in the southwest of Thailand is the exact place you think about when someone talks about tropical beaches. It has hot blue water, soft white sand, palm trees, and green majestic cliffs surrounding it.

You can easily spend a full day there, sunbathing, swimming, picnicking and just admiring the wonders of nature. It’s the perfect place to relax and recharge batteries.

There are a few restaurants, bars around, where you can have a drink or snack after a great beach day.

To reach Railay Beach from Krabi, a tourist hot-spot, you first have to get to Ao Nang Beach. You can either take a taxi or a bus from the airport (only 150 BTH / $4 USD). From this beach, there are 20-minute long-tail boats to Railay Bay West.

Railay Beach is famous and picturesque but not as crowded as the east islands of Thailand, such as the incredible island of Koh Tao .

If you want to spend several days in the area of Railay Beach, which we highly recommend, you can stay at Railay Phutawan Resort . It has easy access to the beach and offers stunning rooms.

18. Klong Muang Beach

  • Best time of year to visit: November-May
  • Cost: 1000 – 2000 THB / $30-60 USD per person (including hotel & food)

Located in the Krabi province of Thailand, the beautiful Klong Muang Beach is a breathtaking coastal paradise and for sure one of the best beaches in Thailand . With its velvety soft sand, crystal clear turquoise waters, and stunning views of the offshore limestone cliffs, this beach offers a truly picturesque and tranquil setting off the typical tourist path!

At nearly 2 kilometers long, Klong Muang Beach offers plenty of space to relax and unwind. The beach is never crowded, even in high season, and is always pleasantly quiet.

There are no noisy water sports like jet skiing, but a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. However, for the more adventurous, there are a number of exciting excursions available from Klong Muang Beach to the surrounding islands . There you can also snorkel and experience the underwater world of Krabi.

In addition to its natural beauty, Klong Muang Beach is also known for its luxurious resorts and first-class amenities . The beach is considered one of the  best places to stay in Krabi .

The area boasts numerous first-class hotels and resorts catering to the needs of discerning travelers. One of the best is the Dusit Thani Beach Resort . It has a prime location on Klong Muang Beach and boasts a great location, swimming pools, and delicious breakfast.

19. Coconut Beach (a hidden gem Thailand beach)

best thailand beaches view of sandy beach with palm trees

  • Nearest airport : Krabi International Airport
  • Best time of the year to visit: November to April
  • Amenities : none

In the Andaman Sea, you’ll find this small palm-fringed beach, Coconut Beach, on Ko Pu Island . It’s unknown to most tourists, just like the island of Ko Pu itself, and that’s what makes this beach particularly interesting. It’s great how you can still find untouched beaches like this in the touristy south of Thailand!

Koh Pu is the upper part of Koh Jum Island and is located a 45-minute boat ride from Krabi. Most people flock to nearby Koh Lipe and Koh Lanta, but they couldn’t be more wrong. At Ko Pu, you can still experience local and authentic Thai life . The relaxed pace of the island is a welcome change from all the crowds on the tourist trail.

To get to Ko Pu you first need to take a longtail boat from Leam Kruat Pier near Krabi to Koh Jum. From Koh Jum, you can take a taxi to Ko Pu, which is the northern part of the island.

At Ko Pu, you can opt to stay at Kuboa Beach where you can find cheap and mid-range accommodation like the fabulous Bonhomie Beach Cottages . From there, it’s a leisurely 25-minute walk to Coconut Beach. If you want to stay closer to Coconut Beach, the only place to stay is the rather expensive Mupa Resort.

Coconut Beach is a lovely place to spend the day if you love solitude and serenity. Do keep in mind that there are no amenities whatsoever so bring enough water and snacks!

Best beaches Koh Tao

Koh Tao is one of the most popular islands in all of Thailand, and for good reason! This beachy spot is away from the crowded areas of Phuket and Krabi, and has so much to offer visitors. It’s spectacular for snorkeling and diving, too. Let’s get to this list of best beaches in Koh Tao!

20. Ao Hin Wong Bay (another favorite for most beautiful beaches in Thailand)

best beaches in Thailand aerial view of rocky beach with palm trees and lounge chairs

  • Nearest Airport: Samui Airport, Koh Samui
  • Best time of year to visit: December to February
  • Amenities: 1 restaurant with restrooms and showers, ample scooter parking

Ao Hin Wong Bay is a picturesque and secluded beach on the east side of Koh Tao. With crystal clear waters and stunning natural scenery, the bay offers a serene atmosphere perfect for relaxation and unwinding.

One of the main attractions of Ao Hin Wong Bay is the incredible marine life that can be found here. The bay is teeming with tropical fish and colorful corals, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling.

You can’t rent snorkeling gear on the beach though , so make sure to bring your own or rent some in one of the many shops around the island.

There is one small bar on the beach called Secret Paradise Bar, which adds to the charm of the beach. The bar offers cold drinks, good Thai food, and seats with umbrellas on the beach. It’s a convenient spot to enjoy refreshments (a fresh coconut maybe?) while taking in the beautiful scenery.

While the beach can get busy during the day, it’s nice and quiet in the morning and quiets down again around sunset, providing a peaceful spot to watch the sunset.

The bay is easily accessible by motorbike or taxi, but please do be cautious when driving on the island’s narrow and winding roads. While  people often wonder if Thailand is safe , it’s actually mostly motorbike accidents by inexperienced tourists that cause problems.

So drive safe and enjoy the most beautiful beaches in Thailand!

21. Nangyuan Island Beach (a kayaker’s paradise)

famous thailand beaches small beach between two karsts with teal water and lush vegetation

  • Nearest Airport: Koh Samui International Airport (USM) in Koh Samui or Chumphon International Airport (CJM) in Tambon Chum Kho.
  • Best Time of Year to Visit: February – April, during whale shark season. The best time of day to visit Nangyuan Island Beach is very early in the morning before the tour groups arrive on the island.
  • Cost: 250 THB (7 USD) for the entrance fee, plus an additional 6-10 USD to get to the island by longtail boat, paddleboard or kayak.
  • Amenities: There is a restaurant on the island that provides a place to grab drinks and food for highly-inflated prices. You’re able to use the restaurant’s bathrooms if you make a purchase.

If you venture out a mere 500 meters off the northwestern end of Koh Tao , you’ll reach a stunning Thai paradise that looks like it crawled straight out of a magazine.

Whether you’re in it for the kayaking trip, the white-sand beaches, the viewpoints, or all of the above, one thing’s for sure – one dip in the sparkling turquoise waters of Nangyuan Island Beach will have you canceling your ticket home.

Nang Yuan Island actually consists of three smaller islets linked together by white sand beaches. The island is privately owned by a resort – the Nangyuan Island Dive Resort . Visitors are held to a set of strict rules if they want to cross these sparkling waters off their bucket list.

The rules include absolutely no plastic bottles, water shoes, or flippers; no flying drones and the island closes at 5:00 PM for anyone not staying at the dive resort.

The best way to get to Nang Yuan Island Beach is by renting kayaks or stand-up paddle boards and leisurely enjoying the scenery on the way over. If you’re not prepared for a 45-minute kayak trip, visitors can also hire a longtail boat from Sairee Beach.

After you’ve gotten your fill of Nanyuan’s stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters, consider taking the short, 10-minute hike uphill to the Nang Yuan Viewpoint (pictured above). Although you’ll definitely need some bug spray for the mosquitos on the way up, your hard work will be instantly rewarded with 360-degree views of the three islets, their connecting sand bar, and Koh Tao.

This is one of the best beaches in Thailand, and one full of adventure you’ll love!

22. Sairee Beach (one of the best beaches in Thailand)

blue sky blue water with sandy shoreline

  • Nearest airport: Koh Samui airport
  • Best time of year to visit: February-April
  • Cost: 825 baht/$24
  • Amenities: Bars, restaurants and accommodation

Without a doubt one of the best Thailand beaches you’ll visit in your lifetime is Sairee Beach!

In addition to enjoying the sparkling blue water and lively beach scene, you absolutely have to stay for the sunset as it’s spectacular, to say the least! There’s a variety of accommodations, both hotels and hostels, that provide a beautiful sea view and are perfect for relaxing in the evening on a balcony!

The beach itself is the most popular in Koh Tao and is where the majority of the population and accommodations are located. As a result, there are tons of great places to eat nearby that you definitely should check out!

If you like to party then Sairee Beach is the place for you! A fter dinner, everyone heads to Fishbowl beach bar for some live music, beer pong, and a little boogie!

During the day, the tide comes very far up the beach which makes a perfect habitat for snorkeling. Even if you’re not a confident snorkeler, there’s a lot to see in the shallow waters. If you are more confident, the options are endless!

The best way of getting to Koh Tao is either by ferry from Ko Samui or Chumpon on the Thai mainland. Similarly, the best place to stay is InTouch Resort which has great facilities, close to town, and easy access to the sea!

No matter when you visit, you’ll find excitement at Sairee Beach. It’s definitely one of the most lively Thailand beaches!

More of the best beaches in Thailand

It’s sad to say, but this list is almost complete! The most incredible beaches of Thailand is still going with a few more stunning spots. Let’s round out the list with these amazing beaches!

23. Sunrise Beach (one of the most famous Thailand beaches)

beaches of thailand view of framed beach sunrise beach restaurant with boats and ocean in distance

  • Nearest Airport: Langkawi International Airport
  • Best time of the year to visit: November – April
  • Cost to Visit: Free
  • Amenities: ample restaurants and beach bars

Sunrise Beach, located on the idyllic island of Koh Lipe, deserves its place among the best beaches in Thailand. With its glistening white sand, crystalline turquoise waters, thriving coral reefs, and an array of laid-back beach bars and restaurants , it promises a relaxing beach experience away from the typical tourist crowds.

As Koh Lipe is the southernmost island in Thailand, reaching this island paradise is quickest from the nearby Malaysian island of Langkawi. With an international airport terminal and multiple daily domestic connections from Kuala Lumpur, you can easily get to Langkawi before jumping on a 2-hour ferry to Koh Lipe.

Alternatively, the nearest international airport in Thailand is Hat Yai. This requires a 2-hour taxi or private transfer to Pak Bara pier, followed by a 1.5-hour speed boat ride to Koh Lipe. Once on the car-free island, getting around is simple on foot or by hopping aboard a local tuk-tuk taxi.

What sets Sunrise Beach apart is its tranquil seclusion compared to other Thai islands. Koh Lipe, including Sunrise Beach, remains less developed and less crowded , contributing to the island’s laid-back charm.

To make the most of your visit, plan to visit during the dry season from November to April. This period offers idyllic weather conditions and abundant opportunities for kayaking, snorkeling, and diving right off the beach.

Sunrise Beach is home to several highly-rated hotels like  Ten Moons Resort , just steps away from the sandy shores. You’ll also discover a variety of beach bars and restaurants in which to unwind in this tropical paradise.

Sunrise Beach is one of Thailand’s best beaches, and worthy of a visit!

24. Nui Bay

thailand beaches tan sand blue water and lush coastline

  • Nearest airport: Krabi Airport
  • Best time of year to visit: December through March
  • Cost: No entrance fee
  • Amenities: One restaurant and massage parlor, only motorbike parking (no car parking)

Nui Bay on  Koh Lanta  is a little slice of paradise, and one of the absolute best Thai beaches. If you travel to Thailand between December and March, make sure to hit it up!

The small beach is located on the southwest of the island and is only accessible by motorbike . However, if you don’t ride a bike, you can also hire a Tuk Tuk to take you to the beach entrance.

From here, you won’t be able to see the beach just yet. Instead, there’s only a staircase indicating the secluded bay. When walking down, keep in mind, this area is also a popular hang-out spot for monkeys, so keep any food and drinks you carry inside a backpack until you reached the beach below!

Once you get closer, you’ll see the beach opening up in front of you, with crystal-clear water, white sand, and a few rocks on each side of the bay. Although the beach is quite small, it’s usually very quiet with only a handful of people on the beach. This means you can enjoy the warm water and relax in the sun away from the tourist crowds.

Plus, if you’re hungry, you can also head to the native beach shack , where you can order a homemade Pad Thai for a reasonable price.

Doesn’t that sound like a perfect beach day in Thailand?

25. Khao Lak Beach (another favorite on this list of best beaches in Thailand)

thailand beaches aerial view of beach blue water and resorts

Well this list of the most amazing Thailand beaches wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Khao Lak Beach in Phang Nga. Situated just about an hour and a half north of Phuket, Khao Lak, Phang Nga, Thailand is an underrated region that’s waiting to be explored!

Khao Lak is home to several beaches, but the best is Khao Lak Beach. Situated right on the Andaman Sea, you’ll get that stunning turquoise water and beautiful sand to enjoy.

If you can, stay at the La Flora Hotel Khao Lak or La Vela Khao Lak . These hotels are located right on the beach and staying there means you’ll get full access to all the amenities, including lounge chairs.

When you’re visiting the area, be sure to check out the views of this beautiful beach from Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park. Simply stunning!

26. Lam Haed Beach

palm trees on white sand with island in distance on blue sky

  • Nearest airport: Phuket (and then a ferry to Koh Yao Yai)
  • Best time to visit: December to April during the dry season
  • Amenities: A small parking area

Located in the quiet island of Koh Yao Yai, Lam Haed is one of the most picturesque beaches in Thailand. Despite being near to Phuket, the island doesn’t get many visitors . This means your trip to Lam Haed Beach is guaranteed to be a peaceful one.

The stunning beach is lined with palm trees and white sand making it the perfect place to relax.

You can visit the beach at any time of the day, but the magic happens when its low tide and a sand bar stretches out into the distance. You can walk down the sand bar for epic views back onto the main beach.

If the tide is low at the right time, it’s one of the best spots to watch sunset on the island. Just be aware that swimming isn’t easy on this beach. Even when the tide is in, the water isn’t very deep and it can be quite rocky. Wear water shoes for this beach!

Lam Haed Beach is in the North-East of Koh Yao Yai near the boat pier. It’s down a long gravel road. Travel options are limited in Koh Yao Yai so you’ll need to hire a scooter or if you’re feeling energetic, walk there.

A good accommodation option on the island is Koh Yao Yai Hillside Resort . It offers affordable villas, some with private pools.

Lam Haed Beach is such a stunning place, and one of the beautiful beaches in Thailand worthy of a visit!

27. Thong Nai Pan Beach (one of the best beaches in Koh Phangan)

blue loungers with bright white beach and palm trees in distance

  • Nearest Airport: Koh Samui
  • Best time of year to visit: November and February
  • Amenities: Restaurants, resorts and street parking

For those looking for a quiet beach away from the crowds, then  Thong Nai Pan Beach  on Koh Phangan is the perfect retreat. It has warm, crystal-clear waters, clean and soft white sand, and is surrounded by the lush jungle of Than Sadet National Park .

Since it’s protected in a bay, the water is always calm with gentle waves, and the shoreline slopes gradually, making it perfect for families with young kids. There’s also a beach volleyball court, and plenty of shops to buy beach toys such as buckets and spades from Panburi Village, which sits next to the beach.

The best time to visit Thong Nai Pan Beach is between November and February when the weather is dry and sunny . March through to May are extremely hot in Thailand, which is great for going to the beach, but there is a catch.

In April and May, many farmers in the north burn their fields which creates a lot of pollution. During this time of year, it’s not possible to visit the north due to the pollution , so everyone comes to the south – Thai locals and tourists. This makes it one of the busiest times of the year to visit Thailand’s beaches.

That being said, Thong Nai Pan Beach is rarely busy. Because it’s located on the northwest of the island, it’s far away from everything such as the Full Moon parties in Haad Rin, and the backpacker crowds of Zen Beach.

Those heading to Thong Nai Pan Beach are primarily looking to stay there, which means you avoid the backpacker crowds and party-goers.

Getting to Thong Nai Pan Beach is relatively easy, as you can take a ferry from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan, and then it’s a 30-minute drive from the pier.

There are taxis that go direct from the pier, or you can rent a scooter and drive yourself (which is only recommended for those with small luggage as there are a few steep hills to drive over).

The nearest airport is Koh Samui, and it takes between one hour to 20 minutes to get the ferry to Koh Phangan, depending on whether you take a speedboat or the cheaper, slower ferry.

Thong Nai Pan Beach is next to Panburi Village which has many restaurants, bars and convenience stores, so you can buy snacks and get refreshments from there. Some resorts and restaurants line the beach, which offer both Western and Thai cuisine.

There are no public restrooms or showers, but you can use the restaurant’s facilities if you buy a drink. There is also plenty of on-street parking in the village – specifically near Buri Rasa Village Resort .

If you want to stay at Thong Nai Pan Beach, you’ll find most resorts are four or five star resorts offering a luxury vacation package.

Panviman  is one of the most popular resorts at Thong Nai Pan Beach, since it offers private villas overlooking the beach, an infinity pool, and even its own private pier with a water taxi service.

There are a few budget-friendly bungalows you can rent, but these tend to be booked well in advance (especially those with A/C) . If you intend on visiting this Thailand beach I highly recommend you book accommodation well in advance to avoid disappointment.

28. Koh Adang

thailand best beaches view of orange sunset with boat at Koh Adang

  • Best time of year to visit : mid-November until March
  • Cost: Resort – 2000 – 6000 THB / $58 – $176 USD per night; day trip – 500 THB / $14 USD
  • Amenities: A 3-star resort with nice private cottages, a great restaurant, a sea-view pool, and water gear such as snorkels, kayaks, and SUPs

Koh Adang , a little-known island in the south Andaman Sea, is one of the most magical of all Thai beaches. On this tiny island, you’ll find pristine beaches, healthy coral, and best of all, very few visitors.

Koh Adang is located in the very south of Thailand, just 500 metres, and a 10-minute boat ride, from the very popular Koh Lipe. The nearest big city is Hat Yai, which is around 400 km south of Phuket International Airport. Hat Yai has very frequent domestic flights coming from many places across Thailand, which you can book at short notice.

The island is best visited by spending a few nights at the Adang Island Resort . This fabulous 3-star resort offers a private beach, a swimming pool, a fantastic restaurant, and lots of fun water toys that you can use. Think kayaks, snorkels, and stand-up paddle boards, so you can play in the water as much as you want.

The Adang Island Resort is cut off from the rest of the island by the jungle, so it’s secluded and private. It’s a lovely piece of paradise and you may never want to leave.

The resort arranges all transportation to the island from Koh Lipe and they can also arrange various snorkeling tours to explore the fantastic reefs surrounding the island.

If you want to explore the remainder of the island, do note that it is a national park and development is very limited . Because there are only basic facilities on this part of the island, most people make a day trip from Koh Lipe. You can organize a boat to take you there and back from Pattaya Beach on Koh Lipe for around 500 THB ($14 USD).

The 10 best beaches in Thailand

Young beautiful Asian woman looking at view while sitting on hanging bed near the beach. Tropical beach holiday. Local experience travel. Wanderlust. Summer vacation.

From Phi Phi to Phuket, from Krabi to Ko Samui, here are the best beaches in Thailand © Oscar Wong / Getty Images

White sand, turquoise waters and palm trees are on the itinerary of just about every visitor to Thailand . And in this respect, the country delivers.

Over 1500 miles of coastline and 1430 islands means a lot of postcard-perfect beaches. And when you’re finished sunbathing, many of these sandy areas also offer activities such as snorkeling, diving or rock climbing, not to mention access to Thailand’s amazing cuisine and unique cultural experiences.

Simply put, it's all a bit overwhelming. To help you make the call, we’ve put together a list of Thailand’s best beaches. There’s a lot to choose from, so we’ve tried to touch on every coastal region of the country, featuring a mix of beaches – listed here in no particular order – that are on the beaten path and islands that take a bit more work to get to.

Two people sit together on a sandy beach staring out to sea where the sun sets behind a huge rocky outcrop

1. Railay, Krabi Province

With an almost stage-like backdrop of sheer, towering karst cliffs, Railay , in Krabi Province , boasts the most dramatic setting of just about any beach in Thailand. Those cliffs – as well as the karst formations that jut out from the sea – are also great for climbing, with lots of established routes. Alternatively, if you don’t want to strap on a harness, make the hike to Railay’s lagoon, which involves a stop that offers amazing views over the peninsula. Railay is also well positioned for boat jaunts to ocean-based climbing spots in the area or trips to hidden beaches and snorkeling spots in Phang-Nga Bay .

Planning tip: Railay is not on an island, but those cliffs mean that it can only be reached by boat from Ao Nang, Ko Phi-Phi, Krabi or Ao Nam Mao.

2. Tubtim Bay, Ko Samet, Rayong Province

Although sometimes dismissed as little more than the easiest island retreat from Bangkok , Ko Samet is a seriously beautiful island. Its sand is so white and fine, it’s been eulogized in Thai literature. Tubtim Bay, on the island’s east shore, offers an excellent balance of good accommodation, a solid restaurant and a great beach as well as access to semi-hidden, lesser-known coves and tiny beaches.

Local tip: More popular with Thais than foreigners, Ko Samet also offers something of a cultural experience, drawing lots of Thai university students and the domestic LGBTIQ+ crowd. A late-night, beachside acoustic guitar session fueled by a bottle of Sang Som is the classic Ko Samet experience.

A woman lies in a hammock that's been strung on a frame out at sea. An empty sandy beach backed by palms stretches into the distance

3. Ko Kut, Trat Province

Few of those in search of a Thai beach opt to head to the country’s east, but those who make it there will be rewarded by some of Thailand’s most beautiful – and little-visited – islands. Perched at the edge of the Gulf of Thailand – just across from Cambodia – Ko Kut is the remotest of a tiny archipelago of islands that includes the more well-known Ko Chang . The beaches here, especially those on the island’s west coast, such as Hat Khlong Chao, have sand as fine as talcum powder and more palm trees than hotels. Being the fourth-largest island in Thailand means there’s also much to explore both on the coast and inland, including waterfalls and day hikes.

Planning tip: Ko Kut is accessed via Laem Sok, in Trat Province. If Cambodia is on your itinerary, it’s possible to cross the border at Hat Lek.

4. Surin Islands Marine National Park, Phang Nga Province

This archipelago of five islands is one of Thailand’s premier diving spots. But above sea level, the protected natural refuge offers snow-white sand, jade and turquoise-hued water, rocky headlands, rugged jungle and lots of wildlife. Ko Surin Nuea, home to the island's only accommodation and restaurant, is one of the best spots to appreciate this. Ko Surin Tai, one of the islands, is home to a relocated community of Moken, also known as Sea Gypsies. Before the 2004 tsunami, they were among the only groups of humans who lived predominantly at sea.

Planning tip: The only way to overnight here is via national park accommodation on Ko Surin Nuea. Rooms – or tents – can be booked via the DNP official online portal once in Thailand or through agents on the mainland in Khuraburi (who also operate transportation to and from the islands).

A gorgeous beach scene with white sands, turquoise waters and large rocky outcrops

5. Maya Bay, Krabi Province

Maya Bay, located on an island that forms part of the Hat Noppharat Tara – Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, is one of Thailand’s most beautiful beaches. Indeed, its fine white sand, clear waters and palm trees were so perfect that it was featured in the 2000 film The Beach . Unfortunately, this cameo caused it to follow the same thematic fall from grace as the fictional atoll: too many people found out about it.

In 2018, Thai authorities decided to close Maya Bay . After a clean-up program and some time for the natural environment to recover, it reopened in 2022 with strict restrictions on visitor numbers, duration (one hour), activities (swimming is not allowed) and strict sustainability goals.

Planning tip: Access to Maya Bay via speedboats from Krabi, Ko Phi-Phi Don and Ko Lanta is generally banned between August and October. It’s not possible to overnight there at any time of year.

6. Ao Khanom, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province

For beautiful, relatively undiscovered stretches of sand mostly untouched by tourists, head to Nakhon Si Thammarat Province , a 12-hour bus or 15-hour train ride (or a one-hour flight) from Bangkok. In the northern part of the province is Ao Khanom, a lengthy, picture-perfect tropical bay where you’re more likely to encounter more local fishers and their brightly-colored boats – and if you’re lucky, one of the region’s adorable pink dolphins – than crowds.

Local tip: Consider a side trip just south to Sichon District, where the Buddhist temple Wat Chedi is known as Thailand’s Chicken Temple. The devout leave cement roosters as offerings here, and tens of thousands of them, including some larger than a long-tailed boat, can be found in an adjacent chicken cemetery.

An empty beach with rocky boulders

7. Sunset Beach, Ko Kradan, Trang Province

Trang Province boasts some of Thailand’s most stunning beachy areas. Yet, removed from the beaten track, they see relatively few visitors. Arguably the handsomest of the lot is Ko Kradan, an island with slender, silky white sand beaches ringing a lush, jungly interior. Development is minimal on the island, but if you really want to escape it all, head to Sunset Beach, a tiny, rocky, secluded beachy outpost on the island’s western shore.

Planning tip: Trang, the landlocked provincial capital and likely your access to the island, is one of Thailand’s best food cities. Be sure to tack on a night here to take advantage of the city’s excellent dim sum halls, noodle shacks and markets.

8. Bottle Beach, Ko Pha-Ngan, Surat Thani Province

Ko Pha-Ngan has drawn backpackers with its laid-back vibe since the 1970s. These days, the infamous Full Moon is the island’s biggest attraction, but even if you’re not looking to party, there are lots of quiet, coastal, sandy places to choose from. Hat Khuat, also known as Bottle Beach and located on the island’s northern shore, takes the form of a dreamy slice of white sand backed by green hills and fronted by turquoise waters. When you’re finished sunbathing, there’s opportunity for swimming, snorkeling or even a day hike to a nearby fishing village.

Planning tip: The quietest months on Ko Pha-Ngan are April to June.

A shot taken from the water facing towards the shore, which is dotted with large rocky cliffs covered in vegetation. A small colorful fishing boat sails by

9. Nui Beach, Phuket

Big-hitter Phuket beaches such as Patong and Kamala get all the press, which means they also draw all the crowds and touts. For something off the beaten track, head to this semi-hidden beach on the island’s far southern shore. Accessible via a two-mile walk down a steep hill (or a brief, bumpy ride in the back of the truck), Nui Beach takes the form of a petite cove attractively framed by palm trees and massive boulders. There’s a handful of low-key bars and restaurants, and although you won’t be alone, you almost certainly won’t feel like part of the crowd.

Local tip: Nui Beach has emerged as something of an Instagram posing ground with swings, frames and photogenic seats set up at the beach's perimeter for that perfect shot.

10. Ko Lipe, Satun Province

Among Thai tourists, Ko Lipe has been the “it” island escape for several years now. This is likely due to its remote location and access to some of the best diving in the region. Some unpleasant inland development has followed as a result of this, but the island’s two longest beaches, Sunset Beach and Sunrise Beach, are still stunners: salt-white crescents of sand backed by jungly hills, with access to nearby protected reefs.

Planning tip: Ko Lipe is generally only accessible from mid-October to mid-May via boats to/from Pak Bara in Satun . Have aspirations to go beyond Thailand? Boats link Ko Lipe and Pulau Langkawi in Malaysia .

The 25 Most Beautiful Beaches in Thailand

Avatar for Sander

The beaches are Thailand’s number one attraction. They are numerous and many of them easily rank amongst the most beautiful in the world. So choosing the most beautiful of all is quite tricky. After thinking about it for a long time we came up with the following list of the 25 most beautiful beaches, visited by us over the last three years. So sit back, relax and make your own list of beaches and islands you’ll be visiting!

1. Ao Mai Ngam Beach – Surin Islands

As far as we’re concerned, this is Thailand’s most beautiful beach!

And we were lucky enough to wake up on it for three whole days. Each morning the first thing we saw, after zipping open our tent, was the powdery white sand and the incredibly clear seawater. The beach is surrounded by thick jungle vegetation, large rocks suitable for climbing and an actual mangrove forest. It’s also a great place to swim and to go snorkeling.

If you get an opportunity to go to the Surin Islands , DO IT!

At Koh Surin - stunning!

2. Phra Nang Beach – Krabi

Phra Nang Beach is around the corner from Railay Beach and one of our favorite beaches in Thailand.

We’ve visited it multiple times, but we’re still blown away by its beauty every time. The huge cliffs “rising up” from the surface of the water are particularly stunning. The best advice we can give you is to rent a kayak and go explore the sea caves and hidden beaches in the area!

3. Nui Bay – Koh Phi Phi

It was an intensive hike (during which we got lost), each step bringing us closer to a little piece of paradise that until now, we had only been able to dream of. Only a handful of people were present on the beach, with a few more bobbing about off the coast in small boats. We couldn’t believe our eyes, especially on an island as popular as Koh Phi Phi!

Nui Bay is a fantastic snorkeling spot with a beautiful sunset you can enjoy every evening. And in case you’re traveling with your significant other, write your names on one of the white stones and plant it between the rocks. This means you’ll stay together forever…

4. Siam Beach – Koh Kood

After three consecutive days of rain, we were finally able to take a walk on the beach in the early morning sunshine. Although the sea was still pretty rough and we had to watch out for falling coconuts, it was really nice.

Maybe September wasn’t the best month to travel to Koh Kood . On the other hand, we were able to enjoy the empty beaches and a spectacular sunset for days on end!

5. Buffalo Bay – Koh Phayam

Koh Phayam. Good times!

If we have to pick one beach on Koh Phayam , it might as well be Buffalo Bay in the south. In the late afternoon, during low tide, the most spectacular rock formations become visible. That and the dense jungle (and rare bird species) make this one of Thailand’s most beautiful beaches. We will be back!

Taking a photo at Aow Kao Kwai in Koh Phayam

6. Railay Beach – Krabi

Railay Beach , baby!

Unsuspecting, we got on a long tail boat at Ao Nang Beach, which took us past the kind of scenery we’d only dreamt about; we couldn’t believe our eyes! The first time we went on this boat trip, all we could do was stare open-mouthed at our surroundings. The huge limestone cliffs, for which Krabi is so famous, were especially impressive.

The beach is ideal for families as well; it’s large and has a gentle slope into the sea. Enjoy the beach life and dine on the beach, under a starry sky. An absolute must!

7. Ao Nuy Beach – Koh Lanta

Alright, so perhaps Koh Lanta doesn’t have the whitest beaches or the clearest sea. It’s still one of our favorite islands in Thailand.

The atmosphere is incredibly relaxed and the southern part of Koh Lanta is especially worth a visit, as it’s still very unspoiled. Park your motorbike (at the sign that reads Ao Nuy Beach) under the trees, walk down the small steps and enter paradise. The beach is small, but that’s what makes it so charming. We’re in love with Ao Nuy!

8. Freedom Beach – Phuket

Thailand’s largest island (Phuket) is known for its gorgeous beaches. After having stayed there for three weeks, we can only agree with that.

Freedom Beach might be the most beautiful of all of Phuket’s beaches . Although it’s located right next to the hugely popular Patong Beach, not everybody manages to find their way to this beach. In case you get a chance to visit Freedom Beach in the early morning, you’ll have it all to yourself. It’s got white powdery sand, crystal clear water and palm trees as a backdrop. Amazing!

9. Maya Bay Beach

Of course we can’t leave out Maya Bay !

Although a visit to Thailand’s best known paradise can disappoint (due to the large crowds), we’ve experienced what it’s like to have Maya Bay’s beach all to ourselves. In the early morning, we literally danced around on the beach. We could say so much more, but we prefer to show it. Check out the video below!

10. Secret Beach – Koh Lipe

Yes, Koh Lipe! The pearl of Thailand’s deep south.

For us Koh Lipe took some getting used to. It was a lot busier than we’d expected (i.e. hoped) and therefore not quite the paradise we imagined it to be.

That is, until we discovered Secret Beach, in the island’s northwestern part. A deserted dirt road led us to an indescribably beautiful beach. It was so beautiful that Mariska went straight for the water and didn’t want to come out anymore!

11. Small Sandy Beach – Khao Lak

We’ve been to Khao Lak twice, but haven’t written a blog post on it yet.

That doesn’t mean that its beaches aren’t beautiful. Quite the contrary, Khao Lak has a huge number of lovely and relaxing beaches, big and small. However, for our top 25 we’ve picked Small Sandy Beach, a hidden gem in Lamru National Park no more than three kilometers from the center of Khao Lak.

Go for a walk through the park (± 30-minute hike) or get a taxi to drop you off beside the road. It’s definitely worth it!

12. Banana Beach – Phuket

We encountered Banana Beach completely by accident. We noticed a cluster of motorbikes along the road and figured there must be something to see there. We got off and climbed our way down to the beach!

Wow! What an amazing beach, hidden in the northwestern part of Phuket. No lounge chairs, parasols or jetskis here. No, just relaxing under the shade of a palm tree all day long!

13. Leela Beach – Koh Phangan

Our friends at Reisjunk.nl are also aware that Thailand has more to offer than just the classic beaches.

They recommend Leela Beach, a small secluded beach around the corner from Haad Rin Beach, the venue for the Full Moon Party . So circumvent the large crowds, visit this private beach and take as many selfies on swings as you like!

14. Hua Lam Beach – Koh Yao Yai

K O H Y A O Y A I

This island is truly amazing! No mass tourism or pushy boat drivers charging an arm and a leg here. No, at Koh Yao Yai you’ll find local fishermen, farmers working the land and women drying sardines in the bright afternoon sun.

And the beach located on the northeastern tip is the same. Pure and unspoiled. Kilometer after kilometer of deserted beach. The seabed is a bit muddy, just like the rest of the area.

Hua Lam Beach in Koh Tao Yai

15. Emerald Cave – Koh Mook

One of the most spectacular things we’ve ever experienced was our visit to the Emerald Cave on Koh Mook !

Having made our way through a pitch-dark sea cave by kayak, we entered a small and secluded beach. Though it’s been known to get very busy, we visited it in the late afternoon and had it all to ourselves. Just amazing!

16. Ya Nui Beach – Phuket

This gorgeous little beach suddenly grabbed our attention when we were riding our motorbikes along the rolling hills of southern Phuket.

We immediately got off and laid down in the shade on the beach. We hired some snorkeling gear, went snorkeling and were surprise by the dozens of colorful fishes swimming around the rock. Pretty cool!

After you’ve visited Ya Nui Beach , head towards the Windmill Viewpoint for an amazing view of the southern part of Phuket.

17. Long Beach – Koh Chang Noi

So nice…!

Long Beach is located on Koh Chang Noi , an island where there’s nothing to do! There are no cars, no motorbike rentals and snorkeling trips are organized only once a week. There’s only a handful of bungalows and if you’re lucky, some restaurants might even be open.

Long Beach is the island’s undisputed highlight. Take your time and enjoy the sunset; its beauty is unparalleled. Take me back!

Photoshoot on the beach

18. Pak Nam Beach – Koh Phi Phi

Far away from the Koh Phi Phi’s hustle and bustle is Pak Nam Beach. We didn’t expect to come across a beach as pretty as this one while walking along Koh Phi Phi.

If you’re interested in partying then this isn’t the place for you. If you’re interested in relaxing and chilling out then this – as far as we’re concerned – is the best and most affordable place on Koh Phi Phi!

→ The Phi Phi Relax Beach Resort has basic bungalows with a fantastic views ←

19. Paradise Beach – Koh Ngai

Koh Ngai (Koh Hai) is part of the relatively unknown Trang archipelago, south of Koh Lanta. Its beaches are stunning and peace and quiet reign supreme.

This island doesn’t have any roads, so no noisy traffic either. The only way to get around is by boat or by foot, via jungle trails. The sea is clear blue, the sand is white as snow and the beach is three (!) kilometers long. Keep an eye on the dense jungle behind the beach as well; you might just spot a Great Hornbill flying around!

→ Tip: The Thanya Beach Resort is one of the best places to stay on the island ←

20. Wai Chaek Beach – Koh Chang

Cherish the time you spend on Wai Chaek Beach.

99% of people visiting Koh Chang won’t find their way to this beach: it’s barely accessible, since there are no good roads that lead to it. And maybe that’s for the best.

On this beautiful beach in the southern part of Koh Chang you’ll encounter long rows of palm trees with an actual mangrove forest on the edge. Amazing!

Perfectly happy at Wai Chaek Beach on Koh Chang

21. Koh Kham Beach – Koh Mak

Are you visiting Thailand between November and April? Go east and discover the Koh Chang Archipelago!

Late last year, we ended up on the tropical island of Koh Mak , just south of Koh Chang. We rented a kayak and made our way to a pearly white beach on the horizon.

We eventually made it to dazzlingly beautiful Koh Kham. What a beautiful beach; and such clear water!

Kayaking from Koh Mak to Koh Kham

22. Ao Prao Bay – Koh Samet

Just three hours from Bangkok is Koh Samet , whose beaches are, rather surprisingly, remarkably beautiful!

Ao Prao Bay is especially (Paradise Bay) great for families. This bay has some amazing bungalows. It’s a really nice place to stay with your kids during the last days of your holidays and a last chance to unwind before your flight home.

Lounging at Ao Prao Bay in Koh Samet

23. Crystal Bay – Koh Samui

Along the main road that leads from popular Lamai Beach to even more popular Chaweng Beach, is gorgeous Crystal Bay Beach.

There are no signs indicating this beach’s location, meaning many tourists miss out on it. Good for you, since you do know this beach exists.

Although the beach isn’t quite as long and wide as some of the other ones on Koh Samui, we definitely think it’s worth an honorable mention in this article!

→ This is a great hotel on Crystal Bay Beach ! ←

24. Koh Nang Yuan Beach – Koh Tao

Koh Nang Yuan ! Touristy? Definitely!

We don’t know if it’s because of the viewpoints, of the snorkeling near the Japanese Garden or just because these three small islands, linked to each other by a small strip of white sand – but we love spending time here, despite the fact that it’s touristy. This is a unique part of Thailand, but you won’t be the only tourist. Definitely worth a visit if you happen to be near Koh Tao!

Koh Nang Yuan's incredible Viewpoint

25. Mae Nam Beach – Koh Samui

Last but not least is Koh Samui’s most relaxing and quiet beach.

Leave your bungalow early in the morning, take a walk on the beach and feel the sand between your toes. Palm trees in the background, a calm sea… what more could you possibly want?

A nice bungalow of course!

→ A nice hotel tip for this beach is the luxurious and affordable Cocopalm Beach Resort ←

Thailand's Top 10 Beach Destinations

thai beach travellers

Prasit photo/Getty Images

Thailand has some of the best beaches in the world. Deciding which one to visit can be difficult — but that's a good problem to have!

Whether island or mainland beach, any of Thailand's top beach destinations will be a great addition to your vacation in the Land of Smiles .

Patong Beach, Phuket

Phuket ( pronounced "poo-ket" ) is the largest of the islands in Thailand . Patong, the largest beach on the island, is Thailand's most popular beach.

With a wide coastline, soft white sand, warm water, and plenty of hotels, restaurants, and shopping within walking distance, it’s impossible to get bored here.

The vibrant nightlife attracts a partying crowd, and the jet skis keep the volume cranked high during the day; those looking for peace and quiet might want to head elsewhere. Patong Beach isn't an idyllic island paradise for travelers looking to recharge.

Although Patong is busy, it's also very social. If you're looking for action among Thailand's top beaches, you'll find it here.

Railay Beach, Krabi

Taylor McIntyre/TripSavvy

Though it’s technically on the mainland, Railay Beach in Krabi is only accessible by boat and has an isolated island feel you won’t find at most of Thailand's popular beach destinations.

Clear blue water, small islands on the horizon, and majestic limestone cliffs surround the small beaches which are usually only crowded during Thailand's peak season .

Railay is considered a rock climber's haven in Thailand. Several climbing schools will teach you the basics of sport climbing and belaying. For climbers with a little experience, take advantage of the excellent bouldering right on the beach and an opportunity to deep-water solo—climb as high as you dare without protection then jump into the sea!

Aside from rock climbing, swimming, and snorkeling, there’s not much else to do here but admire the gorgeous scenery—so bring a book and prepare to relax!

Though Railay Beach is still much quieter and less developed than most popular Thailand beaches, there is more development here every year, and during high season it can feel crowded.

Long Beach, Koh Lanta

Long Beach on the island of Koh Lanta is exactly that—long. It's also arguably one of the best, widest beaches in Thailand. Restaurants right on the beach and views of Koh Phi Phi's unique shape on the horizon lend an even more "exotic" feel.

Unlike many of the other beaches on Koh Lanta , Long Beach is nearly void of sharp rocks and swimming hazards such as sea urchins. A sloping, soft-sand bottom provides dreamy swimming, both day and night.

Although Long Beach once mainly pulled in backpackers for beach bungalows and cheap eats, the scene is considerably more family oriented these days. Regardless, good deals on accommodation can be enjoyed, particularly on the northern side of Long Beach.

In the evenings, Long Beach offers just the right amount of social interaction. The parties (some on the beach, some at venues along the road) are easily avoidable—or easily enjoyable—depending upon your whim.

Koh Lanta is very much different than its nearby neighbor Phuket. The lack of an airport and need to take a short ferry have provided welcome resistance to development on the island. For now, you won't find golf courses (aside from the miniature variety) or chain cafes/restaurants anywhere on Koh Lanta.

Tip: Storms force Long Beach to practically shut down completely each year in May or June. Although a small handful of businesses remain open, many more are shuttered until the season reopens in November. The beach won't be clean and even takes on an apocalyptic feel with broken furniture and destroyed thatch roofs during the peak of the off-season.

Hua Hin Beach, Hua Hin

Regarded by many as one of the nicest beaches near Bangkok , Hua Hin is immensely popular for locals and international visitors. The popularity is mostly thanks to the flat stretches of beach, plenty of things to do, and ease of travel from Bangkok.

The beach slopes almost too gently into the gulf, so although it’s not the best beach for serious swimming, it’s a great place for families with small children.

Aside from beach activities and water sports, Hua Hin has an internationally acclaimed spa and wellness scene, as well as world-class golf courses. For some time with nature, Khao Sam Roi Yot national park isn't too far away.

Hua Hin's main strip stays busy. There are ample opportunities for enjoying nightlife and dining. If all the traffic starts to ruin your vibe, consider going just a little farther south to the peaceful beach strip at Pranburi .

Kata Beach, Phuket

Just a couple of miles away from the hustle and bustle of Patong Beach and south of Karon Beach is Kata Beach—a quieter, more relaxed stretch of sand in Southern Phuket.

Kata has everything that makes Phuket so popular: Palm trees, warm water, and nice scenery—but there aren't many high-rise hotels or shopping malls in sight. Gorgeous resorts line the coast.

Snorkeling can be enjoyed around the northern end of Kata Beach; gear can be rented from dive shops or purchased in local mini-marts. For a great picture or cocktail with a view, drive up to the viewpoint between Kata Beach and Nai Harn.

During low season, waves at Kata Beach can be intense making it a great place to do some surfing or boogie boarding but not ideal for travelers with young children.

Keep in mind that each fall Phuket becomes very busy for at least 10 days during the chaotic-yet-fascinating Phuket Vegetarian Festival . Hint: It isn't just about celebrating tofu!

Lamai Beach, Koh Samui

Though Koh Samui’s beaches can be packed due to it being such a short flight from Bangkok, Lamai Beach strikes the perfect balance for visitors looking for pretty scenery, good swimming, and other things to do when not in the water.

Clusters of palm trees and turquoise water make Lamai Beach the exotic paradise travelers hope to find. The southern end of the beach is the best and busiest, with the sand eventually tapering down to rocks on the northern end. Unfortunately, a few go-go "girlie" bars have set up shop along the road.

For a bizarre break from the sun, have a look inside Wat Khunaram where an esteemed monk's body is mummified and on display (per his request) inside a glass case.

Renting a motorbike is the best way to explore the big island of Koh Samui, but only do so if you're experienced at driving in Asia . The fishing village just a little south, although now catering to tourists, is an interesting diversion.

At night, the scores of bars and restaurants turn Lamai Beach into a party scene that attracts expats and travelers alike.

Sairee Beach, Koh Tao

Once almost exclusively a base for divers, visitors are slowly realizing that Koh Tao has more to offer than just a place to eat and sleep between dives .

Surprisingly, Sairee Beach on Koh Tao has become as much of a party scene as Haad Rin on Koh Phangan—between Full Moon Parties , of course. Guidebooks that still refer to Koh Tao as an "island for divers that shuts down early" (it was until only a few years ago) are in dire need of an update. Nightly pub crawls cater to young travelers who want to meet others and make a lot of noise.

Sairee Beach is a one-mile stretch of sandy beach with a beautiful view of small islands on the horizon. Sairee is Koh Tao’s most popular beach with plenty of inexpensive accommodations and restaurants. The closest airport is on Koh Samui, so getting there involves a ferry trip and thus keeps the beach relatively uncrowded.

White Sand Beach, Koh Chang

White Sand Beach is another example of a beautiful strip of sand once the domain of backpackers a decade ago but now growing into a resort scene. Numerous resorts and evening buffets now occupy the beach, however, the northern end of White Sand Beach still has some of the old bamboo bungalow charm.

As the name implies, the sand is soft, white, and powdery. This beautiful stretch of beach on the west side of the island is fringed with palm and coconut trees against a backdrop of gently sloping hills.

Though Koh Chang is still considered more of a budget traveler island than a luxury destination by some, there is a wide selection of accommodation available. It is also considered to be one of the nicest islands within overland striking distance (5 to 6 hours) of Bangkok.

Sunrise Beach at Haad Rin, Koh Pha Ngan

holgs/Getty Images

As beautiful as it is, Haad Rin is really known for just one thing — full moon parties and rambunctious nightlife.

Once a month, Sunrise Beach on the east side of the peninsula goes on an all-night bender that continues until noon the next day with plenty of drinking, dancing, and music. At other times of the month, the party atmosphere still pervades, so those looking for a quieter beach experience might want to steer clear.

During the day, the golden sand and gently sloping coast make Sunrise Beach good for sunbathing, although there are some rocks in the water to watch out for when swimming. Many visitors spend days sweating out bad decisions (often in the form of bucket drinks) made the night before.

Despite the strong party scene, the beach at Haad Rin is among the best in Thailand. Between Full Moon Party dates , it's not even all that busy. Be warned though, the beach and accommodation both fill to capacity up to a week before the big party. During high season, over 15,000 people will be coming that way to party!

Sunrise Beach is on a small peninsula jutting out from the island, so although there are places to sleep and eat, it’s still relatively undeveloped. A short walk through town to the other side provides access to sunsets on the much tamer Sunset Beach.

Even though Haad Rin seems to steer the reputation for the whole of Koh Pha Ngan, the island is big! A short boat ride away from Haad Rin is Haad Yuan , an even better, more "grown up" beach. The Sanctuary, an isolated health-wellness resort occupies a beautiful bay not far from there. Don't worry: It's way more affordable than it sounds.

simonlong/Getty Images

Although even by Thailand's standards, the beach at Ao Nang in Krabi is narrow and overcrowded during high season, it keeps drawing the crowds because of one thing: The scenery.

The Krabi limestone formations are visible in every direction, as are small islands on the horizon. Since Ao Nang is highly developed and easily accessible from Krabi Town without the need to take a boat, it stays busy.

Some small shops line the beach road, however, there aren't any major malls or outlets in Ao Nang. Instead of shopping, Ao Nang has plenty of water sports, diving, and even a jungle zip line on offer. Rock climbing is also available, but travelers interested in serious climbing should proceed straight to Railay by longtail boat.

A host of bars, some of the go-go variety and some not, serve up Thailand's three major beer choices along with imports to satisfy expats.

Beach on Koh Samui

Thailand's best beach vacations and resorts

By Thailand specialist Mary

There are lots of beaches to choose from in Thailand , where the sand ranges from caramel to pearly white, and the water is so clear you can study the seabed. Thailand is also a year-round beach destination, as when one part is wet, invariably another will be dry.

However, Thailand’s beaches are one of Southeast Asia ’s worst-kept secrets. Such are their reputation that many have become swamped and Westernized as word has spread. But, even the busiest islands and stretches of coast have quieter, authentic pockets, as I’ve discovered.

Krabi

Krabi: classic Thai beach with the best views

The coast at Krabi easily rivals Vietnam’s Halong Bay  for spectacle. Monolithic limestone karsts form curves of natural protection around a succession of bays and lagoons. Away from the sea, the beaches are backed by tropical rainforest.

The island shines in its quieter corners and is suited to getaways or as the relaxation fanfare of a wider cultural tour around Thailand. This is lazy-days beach time, with trips by longtail boat over the calm water to limestone islands for a private lunch — if you prefer a more active stay, there are better choices.

Tubkaak is my choice of Krabi’s beaches, where one of my best-loved resorts in Thailand stands on the edge of the sand in gardens that merge into the jungle surroundings.

The Tubkaak Krabi Boutique Resort is small enough to feel personal. It’s set on one of Krabi’s more out-of-the-way locations, but there are a couple of little restaurants within an easy walk that give some local choice of where to eat. From my table, I watched the dipping sun catch the sky alight as it sank behind the limestone islets into the Andaman Sea.

When to go to Krabi?

Between mid-October and April. I tend to avoid the region’s green season between June and August, though the rains never hit monsoonal proportions.

The Surin, Phuket

Phuket: easily accessible beaches with a range of hotels

It’s hard to talk about Thai beaches and ignore Phuket . The largest island in Thailand, it dangles off the west coast just across the map from quieter Krabi. With an international airport, it’s ideal if you’re short on time.

A big, bustling island where large, anonymous hotels are a reality, it still has untainted beaches if you know where to look. It also has the widest variety of places to stay, from good-value hotels to swanky resorts.

Palm-fringed Pansea Beach is one of the best locations in Phuket that I’ve experienced. Only two hotels service the entire bay, built in a tactical fashion to prevent any further development from slotting in alongside. If you’re staying as a family or a couple, The Surin is top class. Its series of spacious cottages are staggered across the hillside facing the ocean.

The Surin’s black-tiled swimming pool sounds like a minor detail, but pools with black tiles reflect the fiery oranges and deep indigos of sunset with an almost mirror-like effect. And, looking straight out over the Indian Ocean, you’re treated to flaming sunsets nightly.

The next cove is a 20-minute walk away and has a selection of restaurants, markets and bars. Set back from the beach is Twinpalms Phuket, a good-value resort with an air of luxury. I was welcomed with a glass of champagne and referred to the beach butler for my sunbathing needs.

The hotel owns a number of restaurants and beach clubs along the coast, with shuttles running late into the evening.

Phuket's old district

Heritage in Old Phuket Town

You can still find the island’s original charm in Old Phuket Town. Now swallowed up into modern Phuket City, it was a thriving Portuguese trading port in the early 1900s, as its gloriously dilapidated buildings will testify.

Not many visitors make the effort to come here, but I assure you it’s well worth it if you do. I got to know the town better on a guided street-food tour, which takes you between side-street stalls, food courts and shophouse eateries. You’ll sample a medley of Indian-, Chinese- and Malaysian-influenced food, the recipes descended from the town’s original inhabitants.

When to go to Phuket?

From mid-October to April, when the west coast basks under clear-blue skies and the sea is calmest.

Restaurant at The Sarojin, Khao Lak

Khao Lak: a lesser-visited coast with plenty to do

Around an hour’s drive north of Phuket, on the west-coast mainland, Khao Lak doesn’t have the tropical-island looks of Krabi or Phuket’s trading heritage. At its core, it’s a traditional fishing village with a strong Thai identity, evident in its markets.

Remoter and more spread out than some of the busier beach destinations, Khao Lak has so far avoided becoming one of Thailand’s next big resorts. For the time being, it’s a rarely visited beach spot.

The coastline is less contoured along this stretch, and the water is a little more ruffled when compared with some of Phuket’s sheltered bays. It’s still an appealing beach destination for families heading to Thailand, which is reflected in a broad range of places to stay.

I’m fond of The Sarojin . It has an air of exclusivity but service so personable that it feels more like a private estate. I can highly recommend the restaurant and there are enough activities to keep you holed up on the quietest coast I’ve come across.

The nearby Similan Islands make up a marine national park and are consistently voted as one of the best 10 dive sites in the world for the richness of marine life and coral. Zipping over the Andaman Sea to the islands by speedboat takes about one and a half hours.

Khao Sok National Park

Visiting the Khao Sok National Park

One of the biggest strings to Khao Lak’s bow is its proximity to Khao Sok National Park , and the world of activity this opens up. The park is the largest area of tropical rainforest in southern Thailand, with karst scenery and many orchids, birds and rare mammals, including elephants and deer.

If you find, as I do, that beach fatigue can set in, the park is a tonic of activity and exploration . You can kayak through the mangroves, mountain bike along well-laid tracks, or tackle the hiking trails.

The park is roughly an hour inland and easy to explore in a day from Khao Lak. Alternatively, you could stay overnight, and I recommend the Elephant Hills floating camp over Cheow Larn Lake.

When to go to Khao Lak?

The dry season runs from November to February, when you’ll experience comfortable temperatures and little rain.

Napasai Samui, Koh Samui

Koh Samui: a castaway island with optional cocktail hour

Moving over to Thailand’s east coast and the Gulf of Thailand, if I had to be a castaway anywhere it would be on Koh Samui . Even the airport — essentially a wooden hut — emits that feeling of a quintessential tropical island. You’ll arrive by propeller plane from Bangkok  or Phuket.

Until a few years back, coconuts gave Koh Samui its main income, and plantations cover the island. You can hardly move for a palm tree and, flying in, the island appears as a mass of green, held in place by the azure sea.

The busiest beaches are on the east side of Koh Samui. They’re also the most beautiful, but, like Phuket, overrun with international hotels and food chains. Instead, I’d stay somewhere secluded, like the Belmond Napasai on the north coast.

This way, you’ll make the most of the island’s duality. You can spend time relaxing on the Belmond’s quiet white-sand beach and enjoy peaceful candlelit dinners in the sea-facing restaurant (steamed snapper is a specialty). But, you’re only a 20-minute drive from Bophut village, where Portuguese stilt houses run along the sand, containing lively local restaurants and bars.

From Koh Samui you can also travel out for a day to the Angthong National Marine Park, a protected mini archipelago with no development, where you might spot dolphins, green turtles and macaques.

When to go to Koh Samui?

From February to September. If you can travel outside the Easter and summer breaks, you’ll find quieter beaches and better value for money.

Thailand’s smaller islands: secluded luxury escapes

If you’re simply seeking somewhere to relax in seclusion — without the niggling guilt that you should really get out and explore — Thailand has a sprinkling of smaller islands to choose from.

Beach at Paradee Resort, Koh Samet

This T-shaped, 8 km (10 mile) long island has two chief boasts. It holds the accolade as the driest island in the country. And, secondly, it’s the easiest to reach quality beach from Bangkok.

A two-hour car journey, followed by a 10-minute speedboat ride, takes you from the streets of Thailand’s capital to the Paradee Resort’s beach. You’ll need to slip off your shoes and wade through the waves onto the sand — and, with no other hotels in sight, it feels like a private island.

There are other resorts on Koh Samet , which for the most part has stayed relatively undeveloped, but the Paradee is in its own remote, shallow-watered cove. It’s an adults-only retreat (with few activities, I wouldn’t recommend the island for families) with 40 villas, even the smallest of which has its own terrace and alfresco dining area.

When to go to Koh Samet?

Year round. Any rain usually lifts after a couple of hours, and torrential rain is unheard of.

Soneva Kiri, Koh Kood

Soneva Kiri was built as Thailand’s challenge to the out-and-out luxury of island resorts in the Maldives  or Indonesia . And, I’d say it has succeeded.

It’s an hour’s seaplane flight from Bangkok to the jungle-covered island of Koh Kood , which lies close to the Cambodian border. A handful of simple hotels run along one coast, with Soneva Kiri tucked into a tiny peninsula to the north. Each of its private villas is bigger than your average small hotel and set around its own pool and gardens.

This is barefoot luxury in a resort made from eco-friendly bamboo, where your personal host will answer every whim. There’s a long list of experiences, if you do leave your villa or the white-sand beach, including a help-yourself chocolate room and bamboo observatory.

When to go to Koh Kood?

You can go year-round, with the driest season from October to May. Even outside this period, showers rarely last long.

Six Senses Yao Noi, Koh Yao

In the waters of Phang Nga Bay , between Phuket and Krabi, sits Koh Yao , an undeveloped hideaway on this busier side of Thailand’s coast. A one-road village inhabits one side of the island, and a few hotels the other, including Six Senses Yao Noi .

You reach the island by flying to Phuket, before taking a 15-minute speedboat trip across to Six Senses’ jetty. The resort’s pièce de résistance is its view of Phang Nga Bay’s limestone pinnacles from the infinity pool, as well as the peaceful ambience that comes with its secluded location.

You can expect luxurious experiences, including candlelit beach dinners and a comprehensive spa menu. But, they’ve also been creative with ways to spend your time — Muay Thai boxing lessons and picking your own farm-fresh eggs for breakfast being two examples.

When to go to Koh Yao?

With clear wet and dry seasons, Koh Yao is at its best from October to March, when temperatures are comfortably warm and there’s little rain.

13 Best Beaches in Thailand

Thailand’s most beautiful beaches.

Thailand is undoubtedly one of the best beach destinations in the world, thanks to the gorgeous tropical islands in the south of the country, in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea. Practically the definition of the typical tropical paradise, their soft white sands, clear and calm seas, nodding palms and cooling sea breezes are on almost everyone’s bucket lists.

We’ve taken on the challenging task of picking out the best beaches in Thailand. Check out our list below for the absolute must-see shorelines in the Land of Smiles.

Donald Duck Bay

Similan islands.

thai beach travellers

Donald Duck Bay takes its name from the iconic shape of the rocks overlooking the small bay. It's the best beach in a small island chain of perfect beaches – the Similans. Part of a national park, the breathtaking natural beauty of this spot is well protected and preserved. There's quite a lot of coral growing close to the shore so wading out can be a slow experience, but the snorkeling is fantastic.

thai beach travellers

Phuket’s Kata Beach is big enough that its popularity doesn’t make it overcrowded. You have luxurious hotels at one end and traditional long-tail boats at the other, with a tree-lined road separating the beautiful soft sand from a fun nightlife and great restaurants.

23 Best Things to Do in Koh Phangan

Railay beach.

thai beach travellers

Railay is actually a peninsula with 4 first-rate beaches to choose from. Among them, Phra Nang Beach takes the crown as the best for its pristine sands, striking rocks and interesting caves, as well as the novelty of noodles served from beached long-tail boats.

Thong Nai Pan Noi & Yai Beaches

Koh phangan.

thai beach travellers

While there’s no doubting that Haad Rin is the best-known beach on Koh Phangan (because of the Full Moon Parties), it's not the most beautiful on the island. That title belongs to the much quieter but much more amazing Thong Nai Pan beaches (big and small), on the northern side of Koh Phangan.

Lamai Beach

thai beach travellers

Lamai is the best beach on Koh Samui because of its good choice of restaurants, bars, beachfront hotels, and for the iconic Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks at the southern end. It's slightly more laidback than the more famous and slightly longer Chaweng Beach.

Buffalo Bay

thai beach travellers

Koh Phayam is a quiet and peaceful retreat near Koh Chang in Ranong Province. Of its 2 main beaches, Buffalo Bay is the quieter, but also has more varied attractions, including a mangrove forest in the river and a small sea gipsy settlement at the southern end.

White Sand Beach

thai beach travellers

Koh Chang's White Sand Beach is a must-visit if you're looking for soft white sand during your vacation in Thailand. The beach also has a tropical island idyll created by the gentle crystal-clear waves and nodding palm trees.

Laem Thong Beach

Phi phi islands.

thai beach travellers

Laem Thong Beach (Golden Bay) certainly takes the top prize for the most beautiful beach in the Phi Phi Islands. It's relatively close to Bamboo Island, with stunning coral reefs to explore just off the pristine white sandy shore.

Koh Nang Yuan

thai beach travellers

Just off the northwest coast of Koh Tao, Koh Nang Yuan is actually 3 tiny islands connected by a sandy bridge of beautiful beach. While it is something of a victim of its popularity, it remains a beautiful and must-see spot in Thailand.

Klong Dao Beach

thai beach travellers

Klong Dao Beach is known throughout Thailand for its striking sunsets. Despite being Koh Lanta’s most popular beach, it still has a quiet, natural atmosphere. Add powdery white sand and you have a really outstanding place to unwind.

Pattaya Beach

thai beach travellers

Koh Lipe’s Pattaya Beach spans 1.5 km of exquisite white sand and clear water. The quieter Sunrise and Sunset beaches are both just a short walk away from this beach.

Nang Thong Beach

thai beach travellers

All of Khao Lak’s beaches are fantastic, with great sand, beautiful seas and peaceful seclusion. However, Nang Thong is the region’s best thanks to its very stunning setting, which is surrounded by jungle-covered hills. There’s also a good choice of bars, restaurants and shops in nearby La On Village.

Sai Kaew Beach

thai beach travellers

While saying that Sai Kaew Beach is the most developed on the island might seem off-putting, Koh Samet is actually a Thai island with next to no tarmac roads. In this case, “developed” just means that it has a few restaurants and nightlife spots on its otherwise pristinely white sands.

Railay Beach

Kanchanaburi province, khao sok national park, hua hin district, khao yai national park.

Chiang Mai in northern Thailand is a welcome reprieve from the commotion of Bangkok. Here, you'll be treated to beautiful, mountainous landscapes and an Old City full of historical temples, such as Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang. Venture outside of the city to Doi Suthep temple for sweeping views of the city below. Night markets are also a must-do in Chiang Mai, so pencil in time for the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar (one of Thailand's oldest and most well-known night bazaars). And no matter what, leave time for a visit to Elephant Nature Park for some rest and relaxation with Thailand's gentle giants.

Thailand's capital city is nothing short of exhilarating. The city offers a hearty mix of big-city bustle and modern sights, such as the Jim Thompson House, alongside ancient attractions, including Wat Arun, Wat Pho and the Grand Palace. Just don't forget to pack modest clothing for visits to sacred sites, or you won't be admitted. While here, be sure to visit the Chatuchak Weekend Market – one of the largest street markets in the world – and eat at some of Bangkok's more than 300,000 street food stalls (some Michelin starred). At night, take in the skyline by exploring the rooftop bar scene.

Phuket is the largest island in Thailand and also the most popular with travelers. The island draws visitors in with its many palm-fringed beaches and relatively low travel costs, including everything from food to hotels. Hit up highly regarded Patong Beach, party the night away in the Patong district or head inland to Phuket Old Town to experience more local culture and find cheaper lodging options. Complete your once-in-a-lifetime trip by taking a long-tail boat tour to other islands in the area to swim, snorkel or scuba dive.

thai beach travellers

Home to five-star resorts, amazing nightlife and some of Thailand's most beautiful beaches , the island of Ko Samui has something for everyone. When you're not lounging on the white sand, pamper yourself with a luxurious spa treatment, visit an elephant sanctuary or explore ancient temples like Wat Plai Laem and Wat Phra Yai, also known as the Big Buddha Temple. Save time in your schedule for a daytrip to nearby Ang Thong Marine Park, a 42-island archipelago that is accessible via speedboat. Here, travelers can kayak, snorkel and scuba dive.

thai beach travellers

Although the region was devastated by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Phang Nga has recovered and rebuilt. During the cool (though still relatively hot), dry season (from November to February), tourists descend upon the province to check out protected areas like Mu Ko Surin National Park, one of the best diving sites in Thailand. Hiking and snorkeling are also excellent ways to explore while admiring southern Thailand's natural beauty. Before leaving, don't forget to save time for a visit to Ao Phang-Nga National Park, famous for its caves, emerald green waters and the picturesque James Bond Island.

thai beach travellers

Railay Beach features four stunning stretches of sand to sink your toes into. Railay West and Phra Nang Beach are two of the peninsula's most popular beach spots, offering luxury resorts, soft sand and jaw-dropping views of limestone cliffs. Tonsai Beach is more laid-back and budget-friendly thanks to its quieter, more removed location. Meanwhile, Railay East, while not great for swimming, is where you'll find some of the area's best nightlife venues. Regardless of which beaches you choose to visit, you'll have access to some of Thailand's best rock climbing locations, plus various walking paths and coral reefs.

thai beach travellers

Trang's secluded beaches and stunning islands have made it an up-and-coming travel destination. The dramatic surrounding landscapes (think: lush jungles and limestone mountains) contrast beautifully against the beaches' white sands and crystal-clear waters. You can spend days island-hopping to see and do all that Trang has to offer. Top activities you may enjoy include snorkeling around Ko Kradan, swimming to a hidden beach cave on Ko Muk and wandering through Thung Khai Botanical Garden. And after you've gotten your fill of sun and sand, head to one of Trang's 10 districts to immerse yourself in Thai culture.

thai beach travellers

Ko Phi Phi features some of Thailand's most popular beaches. Phi Phi Don, the larger of the two main islands, is known for its lively party scene, hidden coves and deep coral reefs and gardens that are ideal for snorkeling and diving. Meanwhile, the smaller, uninhabited Phi Phi Leh is where you'll find verdant cliffs surrounding Maya Bay's beautiful beaches, which you may recognize from the Leonardo DiCaprio movie "The Beach." The best time to visit is between November and April, though be prepared for hordes of other visitors during this time.

thai beach travellers

Situated in northern Thailand, there are countless reasons to visit Chiang Rai. Wat Rong Suea Ten (The Blue Temple) and Wat Phra Kaeo (Temple of the Emerald Buddha) are two of the city's most popular cultural landmarks, but travelers should also save time for the incredible Wat Rong Khun, Chiang Rai's iconic all-white temple. After exploring Chiang Rai's architectural wonders, enjoy a boat tour of the Mae Kok River, go shopping at the Chiang Rai Night Bazaar or explore the Baan Dam Museum, a collection of buildings created by artist Thawan Duchanee.

thai beach travellers

Thailand's third-largest province captivates travelers with its natural beauty. Its diverse landscape – which features everything from seven-tiered waterfalls, rivers and mountains to Neolithic caves and national parks – is ideal for outdoor pursuits, including hiking and rafting. But a trip here wouldn't be complete without visiting some of the area's World War II sites, including the notorious Bridge over the River Kwai. Start your history lesson at the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre, an interactive museum that tells the tragic story of how the Thailand-Burma Railway was built. Then, stop by the JEATH War Museum to see a replica of a prisoners-of-war camp.

thai beach travellers

Even if you don't consider yourself an outdoorsy person, a trip to Khao Sok National Park is sure to take your breath away. Home to limestone cliffs, awe-inspiring waterfalls and the world's oldest evergreen rainforest, Khao Sok is an incredibly bio-diverse area. Here, you'll find roughly 200 kinds of flora and many different animal species, including tigers, elephants and Southern pig-tailed macaques (monkeys). The park sees a lot of rainfall year-round, so for the best chance of staying dry, time your visit during the dry season, which runs from December to April.

thai beach travellers

For a vacation full of rich cultural attractions, head to Lampang. Sitting about 70 miles southeast of Chiang Mai, Lampang is known for its horse-drawn carriages, authentic Thai cuisine and ornate temples, including the ancient Wat Phrathat Lampang Luang. Spend some time browsing for souvenirs along Kad Kong Ta, a thoroughfare that turns into a street market on weekends, or learn about the production of the chicken bowl at the Dhanabadee Ceramic Museum. For a one-of-a-kind experience, head to nearby Chae Son National Park, where tourists boil eggs in the park's natural hot springs.

thai beach travellers

A popular resort destination along the Gulf of Thailand, the Hua Hin District offers a full roster of activities to pick from (think: water parks, golf courses and night markets). Visitors can ride banana boats at Hua Hin Beach or enjoy the views from the top of Khao Takiap hill (just beware the resident wild monkeys). Hua Hin also serves as an excellent jumping off point for daytrips – spectacular sights like the Phraya Nakhon Cave and Kaeng Krachan National Park, the largest national park in Thailand, are located less than 40 miles outside of the city center.

thai beach travellers

Khao Yai National Park boasts a number of impressive superlatives: It's the oldest and most-visited national park in Thailand, the country's third-largest national park and one of mainland Asia's largest intact monsoon forests. Plus, this stunning national park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and features more than 30 miles of hiking trails, some of which lead to breathtaking waterfalls. Keep in mind, though that guides are required for most of the trails. While exploring, you may spot some of Khao Yai's wild residents, including elephants, sun bears and several species of hornbills.

thai beach travellers

Named Ko Chang (or "Elephant Island" in Thai) because of its elephant-shaped headland, this large island is more secluded than Phuket but no less beautiful. Its west coast is dotted with stunning coastlines (some sandy, some rocky), small towns and a variety of accommodation options, while its interior offers tropical jungles and gushing waterfalls to trek through and to. But remember, Ko Chang's tourism infrastructure isn't as well developed as other Thai islands, so getting here is a bit more of a trek.

thai beach travellers

Located in southern Thailand near the Malaysian border, Hat Yai is a popular stopover for tourists traveling between the two countries. This cosmopolitan city is a premier shopping hub, boasting several malls, night bazaars and a unique floating market, where travelers can purchase local delicacies and goods from vendors stationed in small boats along a canal. When you're not bargaining for the best price, check out the impressive Phra Maha Chedi Tripob Trimongkol, a temple constructed entirely out of stainless steel. Another can't-miss tourist attraction in Hat Yai is the towering statue Phra Buddha Mongkol Maharaj, which sits within Hat Yai Municipal Park.

thai beach travellers

This northeast Thai city is ideal for travelers who prefer a jam-packed vacation itinerary. Start off with a visit to the temple Wat Phothisomphon, then learn about Udon Thani's Chinese heritage at the Thai-Chinese Cultural Center. Other travelers will want to prioritize Udon Thani's natural wonders, which include Nong Prachak Public Park and serene Red Lotus Lake. While you're here, considering making a daytrip to nearby Ban Chiang, a Bronze Age UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most important prehistoric settlements in Southeast Asia.

Trying to prebook as many things as possible in advance to reduce the amount of cash we need to bring for our upcoming trip. Looking at booking the transfer from lipe to hat yai airport on the thai beach travellers website. Does anyone know is this a reputable company???

Many thanks

' class=

The speedboats and minibuses are a well oiled machine. We have done that journey from Lipe to Hat Yai airport every 26th December for the last 7 years and the latest we have arrived at the airport is 13:30. This last time we did it, we got to the airport for 13:00.

We always book via Bundhaya speedboats online. Thai Beach Travellers is one of the travel shops on the island, not sure if they are the same price as going direct with Bundhaya who are one of the speedboat operators.

That's great thankyou! I'll do that then. And stop being so paranoid about being late!!!

Sai Thong Resort, Koh Tao, Thailand

Thailand's top 10 beach hotels and places to stay on a budget

Sai thong resort, koh tao.

While the nearby gulf islands of Samui and Phangan have been long-term draws for beach-loving travellers, the smaller Koh Tao has only recently emerged as one of Thailand's headline destinations. Primarily Tao is famed for its diving – shallow waters, easy currents, epic corals and whale sharks pull in the crowds – with numerous scuba-diving schools based here. But much of this small island still has a tranquil get-away-from-it-all vibe, and the pick of the places to indulge that atmosphere is the Sai Thong, the only resort on the tiny Sai Nuan beach. Sai Thong's tidy wooden fan-cooled bungalows are simply furnished and all have balconies, hammocks and private bathrooms. The owners are incredibly friendly, the food's excellent and vistas include the almost-private white sand beach and a massive boulder-strewn headland. Superb snorkelling, plenty of nice spots to lounge and an unforgettable arrival by long-tail boat complete the picture. saithongresort.info , no phone, rooms from 500 to 2,500 baht a night (around £11 to £55) depending on the room and season

Relax Bay, Koh Lanta

Relax Bay, Koh Lanta, Thailand

Just along the Andaman Sea coast, south of Krabi Town, the landscape turns into a mix of mangroves and beguiling islands. The largest of these is Koh Lanta, rightly famed for its nearby diving sites and its beaches, which are usually long, sweeping affairs, gently sloping into the warm Andaman Sea. One of the best is found at the suitably named Relax Bay, home to the resort of the same name, a French-owned endeavour complete with a range of secluded and comfortable wooden beachside bungalows and large tents. Relax is the kind of place where you might end up staying longer than planned, thanks to the almost homestay style of genuine and friendly service, authentic Thai food – the French menu isn't bad either – and calming, restful atmosphere. +66 75 684 194, relaxbay.com , rooms from £19-£98 depending on room and season

Bamboo Bungalows, Koh Phayam

Bamboo Bungalows, Koh Phayam

The northern end of Thailand's Andaman Sea coast leads to the Burmese border and the sea-frontier town of Ranong. From here it's a two-hour boat ride to the island of Phayam, famous for its cashew nuts and superb beaches; indeed, Phayam is possibly the only place on earth where you can enjoy a full-moon beach party and an annual Miss Cashew Nut contest. Head to Ao Yai, or Big Beach, a 3km crescent of white sand on the west of Phayam where you'll find Bamboo Bungalows. There's a variety of beachside bungalows at this laid-back and engaging operation, from basic A-framed "shell-huts" to comfortable villas with contemporary Thai furnishings. There are kayaks and snorkelling equipment and the restaurant, which often bakes its own bread, is regarded as one of the best on the island. For a longer stay on Phayam, you can rent an entire house at Koh Phayam Sanctuary from just over £200 a month. +66 87 0701215, bamboo-bungalows.com , rooms from £4.50 to £32

Koh Yao Noi community homestay programme

Koh Yao Noi, Thailand

Watching the sun rise, or set, over the limestone karst-filled waters of Phang Nga Bay makes for one the most stunning sights in Thailand. Located slap-bang in the middle of the bay is the island of Yao Noi, the perfect place to let the days slip away and engage in a bit of sun-gazing. The ambience on Yao Noi is decidedly soporific, with few cars and just a smattering of guesthouses, hotels and restaurants. The island is also home to an award-winning homestay programme run by local fishermen, and a chance to stay with one of the host families will give you an insight into a way of life the islanders are fiercely proud of. Your host family will also provide you with endless feasts of sumptuous seafood and take you on day trips to remote islands with secret beaches. Accommodation is basic, though spotlessly clean, and the families take turns to host guests according to a strict rota. +44 (0) 845 123 2844, symbiosis-travel.com/thailand , a three-night package with Symbiosis cost £235pp including boat and airport transfers and all excursions and activities

Nimmanoradee Resort, Koh Samet

Nimmanoradee Resort, Koh Samet

The island of Samet, off Thailand's easterly coast a four-hour drive from Bangkok, is infamous as a weekend party island. But it offers far more than eating, drinking and loud music. The beaches are picture-perfect expanses of powder-white sand, with bay after bay running south along Samet's east coast. And the further south down the island you head, the quieter it becomes until you reach, right on the very southern tip, the Nimmanoradee Resort. Cute clapboard huts are scattered on rocky outcrops and amid trees, all with sea views, and a private sandy beach is a step away. There are kayaks, a swimming pool, deckchairs everywhere and the rooms are bathed in natural light with neat designer touches. Flatscreen TVs and bathtubs add extra comfort to the natural setting. Room rates on Samet tend to be much lower during the week. +66 38 644 2734, nimmanoradee.com , cottages sleep two from £58 a night

Sun Beach Guesthouse, Prachuap Khiri Khan

Sun Beach Guesthouse, Prachuap Khiri Khan

Six hours south of Bangkok down the Gulf of Thailand coast is the friendly fishing town of Prachuap Khiri Khan. Set on a gorgeous bay with a promenade-style seafront, Prachuap has never really succumbed to tourism so retains plenty of earthy Thai charm. The highlight is the nearby beach of Ao Manao, about 2km from the town (a tuk-tuk will take you there for £1), where you'll find an idyllic sweep of fine sand fringed by tall trees and lapped by calm waters. Manao (which means lime in Thai) is set on a low-key air force base, where you have to show your passport at the entrance gate. But don't let this put you off: the base helps protect the beach from developers, and is home to a small colony of cute dusky langur monkeys and dozens of cheap and excellent seafood stalls. There's nowhere to stay at Ao Manao, but the friendly Sun Beach Guesthouse on the Prachuap seafront comes with pool, sea-facing balconies and wonderful sunrises. +66 3260 4770, sunbeach-guesthouse.com , rooms from £15

The Mangrove, Koh Chang

An uninhabited island off Koh Chang, Thailand

In the far-flung corner of the eastern gulf coast is Koh Chang national marine park, where you'll find a smattering of 50 or so islands and islets in an area covering 650 sq km. At the centre is Koh Chang island itself, with hills 700m high, lush jungle and a run of exquisite beaches down its western shore. Tucked up among them is Bailan Bay, where you'll find the very lovely Mangrove bungalow operation amid woodland overlooking the sea. Everything at the Mangrove is very low-key and natural, with plenty of hammocks and cushion-strewn hang-out terraces around the resort area. The bungalows are wooden, fan-cooled affairs with cute furnishings and attached outdoor bathrooms. The beach can get a bit narrow at high tide, but the atmosphere of total relaxation and very affordable seclusion more than makes up for that. Add in excellent food, cold drinks and ice-cream and this is another place where you might find yourself staying longer than you intended. +66 9497 888, no website – see travelfish.org for details, bungalows from £17

Kantary Beach, Khao Lak

Khao Lak, Kantary Beach

An hour or so north of Phuket, the Andaman Sea coast stretches out into a long run of perfect white sand beaches and the Khao Lak national park. There's little in the way of urban build here and really the only thing to do is relax and enjoy the sun. Of the numerous excellent mid-range and luxury resorts here, Kantary Beach is one of the best, and makes for a great choice for families, too. The contemporary designer rooms are massive – each comes with separate living area, sofa bed, mini-kitchen and balcony – but surprisingly affordable, while the 11km of palm-fringed beach the rooms look on to is perfect for luxuriant tropical lazing. The resort serves excellent seafood and Thai grub, has a kids' play area, a huge pool and also rents out kayaks and mini-catamarans to guests. +66 7658 4700, kantarycollection.com , rooms from £40 low season to £80 high season

OonLee Bungalows, Koh Jum

OonLee Bungalows, Koh Jum, Thailand

Most visitors to the Andaman Coast hub of Krabi head straight to the flesh-pot of Phi Phi or the busy beaches of Ao Nang – and have probably never even heard of the nearby island of Jum. Those who make it to Koh Jum are thankful that this somnolent, verdant isle is still off the radar. The beaches here are not the postcard-perfect sweeps of white sand you'll find elsewhere, but the charm is in the Chao Ley (Sea Gypsy) locals, the thick jungle and the quirkiness. The pick of places to stay is OonLee Bungalows, run by a Frenchwoman and her Thai husband – who also happens to be a gourmet chef and a carpenter. The gorgeous homely little bungalows that blend in with the forest and peer over the sea are a labour of love for the owners. Factor in awesome food, a welcome as friendly as you'll find anywhere, plus enough hammocks and big soft cushions for a lifetime's worth of lazing and you should be suitably bewitched. +66 8720 08053, kohjumoonleebungalows.com , from £13 to £87 depending on room and season

Tarutao national park bungalows

Koh Tarutao national park, Thailand

Once home to pirates and political prisoners, Tarutao, at the southern end of Thailand's Andaman coast, is now one of Thailand's best-protected national parks. The interior is filled with thick jungle and all manner of beasties, including snakes and monkeys, and the beaches are extraordinarily beautiful. In terms of places to stay and eat, this protection keeps things at a basic, though adequate, level and on all beaches the only choice is simple national park bungalows, with minimal electricity, and cold water. If you can brave these conditions, you will be amply rewarded, as stunning Tarutao is kept pretty much as nature intended. kotarutaothailand.com , reservations (book in advance) , two-person bungalows from £11 The photo caption to this entry was amended on 17 January 2012

Thailand's beaches and islands are always a holiday destination that cuts across any age, class, gender. UME Travel has carefully hand-picked some of the stunning islands and beaches for our customers.

1. What beaches are close to Bangkok?

Located only a short distance from Bangkok, Hua Hin is known as the Thai Royal Family's beach resort. It's long been a fashionable destination for a short beach tour in the tropical sun.

If you are looking to some wild night time, Pattaya is the place for you. During the day, the night owl can play on many islets in the neighborhood, such as Koh Samet and Koh Lan; they are very suitable for island hopping. When the night fall, the city will become the busiest party and club hotspot in the whole of Thailand.

2. Which is the best beach in Phuket?

Patong Beach

Patong is the main beach on the west coast of Phuket . Patong has a variety of activities and nightlife, and is an ideal place to play and party, especially for young. At night, there is a busy nightlife in town with hundreds of restaurants, nightclubs and bars. If you come for party, stay no other place. If you're looking for a quiet location, it's quieter at the north end. There are thousands of hotels to choose from. The famous Half Moon Party is held on Paradise Beach which is only 10 mins driving distance from Patong Beach.

Kata Beach is the second favorite beach in Phuket after Patong. For families, it is a popular choice because it's less crowded and has a wide white beach and an incredible blue sea at the same time. Provide a lot of dinning, shopping and available to most of Phuket day tours.

Bangtao Beach

Compared with Phuket's hotel, which is economic and merely on beach, visitors might find that they have the beach to themselves on Bangtao Beach. It's also one of Asia's most immense resort complexes, which host some of the most luxurious and largest resorts on the island such as Banyan Tree Resort, Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket and Angsana Resort and Outrigger Resort.

3. How many days in Phuket is enough?

There are several must-do things in Phuket – Phang Nga Bay, Phi Phi Island, Phuket temples and Elephant Sanctuary. If you wish to do loads of stuff here 4 days in phuket are good enough. If you do have a longer time then you can cover some nearby islands.

4. Can I only stay in beach and island and not visiting Bangkok?

Yes, you can. The round-way flight from and to Phuket airport will save a lot compared with Bangkok inbound and Phuket outbound.
