Day 1 Bangkok

Greetings and welcome to Thailand! On arrival into Bangkok International Airport (BKK), please make your way to your hotel.

The vibrant city of Bangkok, renowned for its iconic tuk tuks, khlong boats, and delectable street food, eagerly awaits your arrival. With countless attractions and experiences, we suggest arriving a day or two in advance to truly immerse yourself in the city's charm. Consider embarking on a scenic riverboat ride to Chinatown, where you can wander through its bustling streets and savour the local culture.

Tonight, at 6pm, prepare for our welcome meeting, where our knowledgeable guide will offer recommendations for your Bangkok exploration.

Day 2 Bangkok Kanchanaburi

After breakfast, discover the magnificent Grand Palace, a stunning architectural marvel featuring a series of exquisite structures on the exterior and a truly enchanting interior. This historic palace served as a royal residence from the 18th to the mid-20th century and stands as an undeniable national treasure, likely the most frequented royal monument in Thailand. It's an absolute must-visit.

Embark on a picturesque river cruise along the Chao Phraya River to explore the renowned 'khlongs' or canals. Life along these waterways presents a stark contrast to the bustling streets of the city, offering a tranquil and captivating experience.

As the day progresses, journey westward to Kanchanaburi, a drive of approximately 2.5 hours. Situated at the confluence of the Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai rivers, Kanchanaburi is home to the iconic 'Bridge on the River Kwai.

Day 3 Kanchanaburi Kwai Noi River Kanchanaburi

Begin your day by heading towards the enchanting Erawan Falls, which gracefully cascade into a series of emerald-green pools. This natural wonder provides an idyllic setting for swimming, leisurely strolls, or simply unwinding in its serene ambiance. Following your visit, continue your journey to the Hellfire Pass Memorial, a poignant tribute constructed to honour the memory of the Allied prisoners of war (POWs) and Asian conscripts who lost their lives while toiling on the most challenging sections of the Thai-Burma Death Railway.

Next, board a train at Nam Tok station and embark on a historic ride along the tracks that meander beside the Kwai Noi River. Traverse the original wooden viaduct painstakingly built by the Allied POWs, all while being enveloped by awe-inspiring landscapes. Take a moment to soak in the beauty of the surroundings.

Day 4 Kanchanaburi Ayutthaya

Depart from Kanchanaburi this morning and set your course for Ayutthaya. Once the majestic capital of the Kingdom of Siam, Ayutthaya's Historical Park is now home to the remnants of grand palaces, Buddhist temples, monasteries, and ancient statues. Your afternoon will be dedicated to exploring these remarkable historical sites.

Day 5 Ayutthaya Sukhothai

Prepare for a day of travel adventure! Begin your journey by catching a traditional songthaew from your lodging to the train station. There, you'll hop on a day train bound for Phitsanulok. Don't forget to have your favourite music, podcasts, movies, or a captivating book at the ready, as you'll be treated to a leisurely ride through the picturesque countryside on this relaxing travel day.

Upon arrival, you'll have some free time in the afternoon to explore at your own pace. Later, make your way to a local residence for a delightful Inspiring Taste – a Thai-style cooking class. Immerse yourself in the culinary traditions of the Sukhothai region as your host guides you through the preparation of these authentic recipes. Together, you'll create a delectable feast to enjoy at the end of the session.

Day 6 Sukhothai

Embark on a journey to the ancient ruins of Old Sukhothai, nestled amidst picturesque lakes and gardens. The religious art and architecture from the Sukhothai era represent quintessential Thai styles. Upon reaching the park, you'll have the opportunity to hop on an electric vehicle, enabling you to explore the area at a relaxed pace while delving into the captivating history of this remarkable site.

Following your exploration, the afternoon is yours to savour. You can unwind by the pool or consider engaging in one of the optional activities listed below.

Participate in a hands-on workshop at one of the local businesses that have been preserving the traditional Sukhothai crafting techniques for generations. An excellent example is Suthep Sangkhalok, a small family-run enterprise located near the historical park. Here, visitors have the opportunity to engage in a ceramics workshop, gaining insights into the enduring tradition of Sukhothai ceramics.

In present times, Sukhothai boasts several modest ceramic factories typically managed by families who have carried on the craft through successive generations. These establishments not only offer exquisite handcrafted pieces for sale but also provide valuable information about the Sukhothai ceramics process and the distinctive Sawankhalok style.

Duration: 2 hours (including instruction and hands-on experience) with transportation included.

A local guide will be on hand to assist.

Day 7 Sukhothai Chiang Mai

Begin your day by journeying to Chiang Mai, the bustling cultural hub of northern Thailand, renowned for its wealth of famous temples and captivating old city district. Upon arrival, your first stop will be Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a revered temple situated high on a mountain with commanding views over Chiang Mai. To reach this sacred site, you'll have the option to either ascend the 309-step staircase or take a convenient cable car ride.

In the late afternoon, complete your check-in at your hotel, where you can enjoy some well-deserved leisure time.

Day 8 Chiang Mai

This morning, embark on an enriching exploration of Chiang Mai's early risers and local life. Immerse yourself in the unique cultural experiences, including alms giving and a vibrant morning market. Stroll past iconic sites such as the striking Wat Chedi Luang temple, the historic Wat Phra Singh temple, and the Three Kings Statue, culminating your tour with a delightful cup of local coffee. Afterward, return to the hotel for a satisfying breakfast and some well-deserved relaxation.

Chiang Mai holds a special allure, especially when you venture into the ancient districts within its city walls. You have the entire day to leisurely explore or consider participating in one of the optional activities listed below.

Drive out to the ChangChill Elephant Reserve and learn how this organization supports the protection, conversation, and lifestyle of free-roaming elephants in the region. You’ll observe the daily patterns of these jungle giants from a safe distance, seeing how they graze and socialize with their other friends. The expert local guides will give you a live lecture on the elephants as well as the reserve’s sustainable tourism practices and conservation efforts in the area. Enjoy some refreshments near the elephant’s mud pit, then be treated to lunch in a riverside sala (pavilion) alongside the giant mammals.

Depart hotel: 10:00 - 10:30 am Arrive hotel: 5:30 - 6:00 pm Inclusions: local guide, return transfers, buffet lunch

Detailed schedule

Day 1 - welcome to bangkok.

Upon arrival at Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Sonasia’s guide & driver will pick you up and transfer directly to your hotel. Same same, but different. This Thailish T-shirt philosophy sums up Bangkok, a city where the familiar and the exotic collide like the flavors on a plate of pàt tai. Later in the afternoon, after freshening up, take a half-day trip to discover one of the least-known-by-foreigners street areas in Bangkok, in Bangrak District. Once in the area, sample some local street food snacks while the guide explains how to use local modes of transportation like tuk tuk or local buses. Cool down with a local Thai iced coffee ‘Kafae Boran’ or frozen fruit shake. After that, hop on a tuk tuk to River City Shopping Complex Pier and take a ferry-crossing to Khlongsan District to explore the local market in the area. End the day’s walking tour at the Jam Factory, a small industrial-design complex with a modern book café and a unique furniture shop by a famous Thai artist. Located in the complex is The Never Ending Summer Restaurant, a cool industrial-style Thai restaurant with authentic Thai tastes. Enjoy a nice dinner in a cozy atmosphere (client expense). After dinner, transfer back to the hotel.    Overnight in Bangkok.

Day 2 - Bangkok - Countryside exploration

After breakfast at the hotel, drive just an hour south of Bangkok to Samut Songkhram, the province that offers visitors a glimpse into Thai countryside life. We will start the day with a stop at a local train station to experience a short regional train ride bounding for an amazing country market that has sprouted along the railway tracks.  Here, witness the incredible speed of the vendors as they quickly pack their stalls right before 08:30 when the train approaches; hence bringing shopping to a brief halt. It is a standard practice and stall holders have learnt the art of assembling and reassembling their wares at a moment’s notice! Then we will visit Damnoen Saduak Floating Market and take a longtail boat ride through the canals to see how Thai people live alongside a labyrinth of canals in the area. Arrive at the famous Damnoen Saduak Market and stroll around the colorful floating marketplace bustling with boats and vendors selling tropical fruits and other delights. Return to Bangkok and enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure. Overnight in Bangkok.

Thailand Trip Itinerary

Here we go, it’s that time to head to the airport and get stuck into this island hopping adventure! We’ll be waiting for you at Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK) or the less commonly used Don Mueang International Airport (DMK). Rest assured, one of our trusted drivers will be standing with a sign, and your name will be on it. The first day of the trip is about finding your bearings and settling in. It’s a good idea to try and arrive sometime in the middle of the day (not essential) to give you enough time to freshen up before we head out for chilled dinner and drinks at one of our favourite spots. 📍 Location: Bangkok 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Airport pickup, getting settled in, dinner & chilled drinks

Day 1: Arrive in Bangkok

You honestly can’t come to Bangkok without getting stuck into the tasty street food flavours. We’ll be visiting local temples, cruising around the streets in Tuk Tuks and relaxing with a cheeky traditional Thai massage. By night we’ll head to the infamous Khao San Road for a night you’ll never forget… be warned… Bangkok has you now 😬 📍 Location: Bangkok 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast & Lunch 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Walking tour, local temple visit, Wat Pho & Thai massage

Day 2: The best of Bangkok 🛺

If you decided to have a few drinks, you’ll no doubt be a bit dusty today but don’t worry, we’ve got a chilled river cruise to one of Bangkok's most iconic temples. If you’re lucky enough, we might get a sacred blessing from a Buddhist Monk at Wat Arun. It’s now time to get stuck into some yummy Thai flavours at the Wang Lang Market. Later in the day, we board the overnight train heading south to the Surat Thani province. 📍 Location: Bangkok 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast 🙌🏼 Key highlights: River cruise, Wat Arun, Wang Lang Market & overnight train

Day 3: Food markets, shopping & overnight train

There really aren’t many places in the world that rival the sheer beauty of the Khao Sok National Park. It’s not every day you get the opportunity to sleep deep within the oldest evergreen rainforest in the world on floating bungalows. It’s one of those places that will forever hold a special place in your heart, that’s for sure. Grab yourself a tube and just kick back and relax, today is all about the chilled vibes. But don’t worry if you struggle with that, grab a kayak and go for a paddle… you might come across wild elephants and monkeys roaming free 😍 📍 Location: Khao Sok National Park 🍽️ Included meals: Lunch & Dinner 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Floating bungalows, tubing & kayaks

Day 4: Floating Bungalows in Khao Sok National Park

Who doesn’t love a little bit of sun on those cheeks and some relaxing beach time!? Well, here you have it… Krabi is home to some of Thailand's most famous beaches. Before we get stuck into the crystal clear waters, it’s time to get those runners on and head to the summit of the Tiger Cave viewpoint, it’s a tough set of steps but worth it for those incredible views! Tonight we’ll head into Ao Nang for dinner and maybe a few cold drinks… come on, we deserve it! 📍 Location: Krabi 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast & Lunch 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Tiger Cave viewpoint

Day 5: It’s time to head south to the beaches

Nowhere in the world will you find beaches quite like Railay and Phra Nang. When you imagine hopping between islands in Thailand, you can't help but picture those classic longtail boats, vibrant ribbons, crystal-clear waters, and those massive limestone karsts. The Krabi region truly captures Thailand in all its glory. The only way to truly embrace the southern beaches of Thailand is to top up that tan, get the volleyball out, and simply enjoy some chill time... that's today's plan! 📍 Location: Krabi/Railay Beach 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Boat trip to Railay & Phra Nang Beach

Day 6: Here she is, the world-famous Railay Beach 😍

If you’re looking for cobbled streets, pristine beaches and island life… look no further than Koh Phi Phi. White sandy beaches surrounded by crystal clear waters await you. Welcome to a place that most backpackers and solo travellers know as ‘paradise’. During our time in Phi Phi, we’ll be island hopping via our private speedboat, exploring secluded lagoons, and snorkelling in crystal clear waters. By night we’ll no doubt get our dancing shoes on with a splash of UV paint before hitting the bucket bars at the island beach parties. 📍 Location: Phi Phi Islands 🍽️ Included meals: 2 x Breakfast & 1 x Lunch 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Ferry, speedboat trip, snorkelling, fire show & beach party

Day 7-8: Welcome to the Phi Phi Islands

It’s not going to be easy, but today is checkout day and the time to say goodbye after an incredible 9 days in Thailand. You’ll be reminiscing over breakfast and trying to piece your emotions together before you embark on your journey home or to your next destination. The tour finishes on the Phi Phi Islands, and it’s important to consider logistics when planning your onward journey. If you plan to leave on this day, we suggest leaving in the morning and booking a flight from either Krabi or Phuket late afternoon to be safe. 📍 Location: Phi Phi Islands 🍽️ Included meals: Breakfast 🙌🏼 Key highlights: Check out & onward travel ⁉️ Important: Those who opted for the longer South to North - 15 day Thailand trip will continue on.

  • Extend your trip and head north to Chiang Mai & Pai
  • Stay a few nights in Phuket or Krabi
  • Jump on a PADI scuba diving course

Day 9: It’s time to check out and say your goodbyes

Trip Preparation

Do I need a visa?

For most travellers, Thailand is a very easy country to visit with a simple ‘Visa on Arrival’ process. This includes a long list of different countries* including; the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Scandinavia and most of Europe. The ‘Visa on Arrival’ allows you 30 days when entering Thailand by air. If you don’t qualify for the ‘Visa on Arrival’, you can apply for a visa here . *You must check your visa eligibility as we are not visa experts. The information above is general in nature. Here’s a blog that we put together to help; ‘An Unofficial Visa Guide to Asia & Australia’.

What vaccinations do I need?

Similar to visas, we are not medical professionals and would hate to give you false or misleading information. We recommend you book an appointment with your doctor or local pharmacy to discuss your travel plans and what precautions you need to be aware of. They will provide up-to-date official guidance and will no doubt have your vaccination and immunisation history on file. All destinations and areas we travel to are generally low risk but best to be on the safe side. Click here for a useful resource provided by the UK NHS website .

What about COVID-19 travel restrictions?

It's always a good idea to check whether your destination or airline requires you to be COVID-19 vaccinated or tested to travel. It's your responsibility to stay up-to-date and ensure you join us on the Thailand tour without any issues. Click here for a useful resource provided by the UK government.

Is travel insurance compulsory?

Travel insurance is an essential part of your trip preparation. It’s not only a smart idea to get covered, but it will also give your loved ones peace of mind. We actually require all customers to show proof of coverage at the beginning of the tour. We’ll need to see your name, area of cover and dates that the insurance is valid. It’s a good idea to get this sorted ASAP to ensure you’re covered for all eventualities.

Will I receive a packing list?

You sure will, once your trip is confirmed, you’ll receive a confirmation email with a bunch of useful information, including an ‘Arrival Guide’. Within this guide, you’ll find a packing list, safety and cultural information and some useful tips to prepare for your trip.

Should I bring a backpack or a suitcase?

Most people do prefer travelling with a backpack, and it’s generally easier when moving around, but it’s not uncommon for some travellers to bring a suitcase. We suggest bringing something you are comfortable with carrying and lugging around. It’s also important to bring a small day bag that can hold enough for an overnight trip or those travel essentials. Click here to read a blog we wrote on this, ‘Backpack vs Suitcase - What is best for travelling?’

Is there a limit to my luggage weight?

We suggest not going crazy with the packing and keeping it simple. Try and bring loose/floaty clothing that isn’t too thick or heavy. No need to bring heels or walking boots. Bring a few warm layers during Dec and Feb, as it can get a little chilly in the north. We limit the luggage to 20kg per person. Best to leave the kitchen sink at home 🤣

Are there laundry services on tour?

There will be a few opportunities to do laundry throughout the trip, but we always suggest bringing enough underwear and essentials for the full trip. Your Group Leader will let you know the best time to do laundry, but this usually doesn’t happen until 4 or 5 days into the tour.

Do I need to bring a towel?

There are towels provided for showering and freshening up at all the hotels we stay at. We suggest buying a microfibre towel or large sarong as they are small and dry fast for use on the beach and swimming.

How much spending money do I need?

Once you've booked your flights, paid off your trip and got some solid travel insurance, you'll be all set for that Thailand adventure. We suggest bringing no less than £300/$400, but this should be the bare minimum. We suggest working from an average of £400-500/$500-700 over 2 weeks, this will cover things like shopping, drinks, extra meals and anything else you fancy treating yourself to... maybe a few massages!?

What's the best way to manage my money?

We always recommend having a few different options when managing your money while on the road. Having your everyday bank/ATM card with you as a backup is always a good idea, but we strongly suggest signing up for a travel/currency card. Most of these cards can be managed through an easy, easy-to-use app. There are ATMs throughout the trip, and we suggest grabbing some local currency when you arrive at the airport.

Will there be a Whatsapp group?

You’ll receive a final email with useful information to help with your arrival approximately 2 weeks before the trip. This includes a link to a private Whatsapp group for the tour date that you’ll be travelling on. It’s a great place to chat with the rest of the people on the tour and your Group Leader. If you’ve not already, click this link and join the ‘Feel Free Family’ Facebook Group . The FB community is ideal for discussing how things work with past and future travellers. Add yourself to the group and make a post asking who else has booked or thinking about booking the same date as you.

Your Arrival

When should I arrive on Day 1?

We suggest aiming to arrive during the middle of the 1st day, it’s not essential, but it will give you time to freshen up before we head out for dinner and drinks. You’ll be grateful for that little extra time to relax, soak up some afternoon sun or just go for a wander and explore the local area.

Can I arrive a day or 2 early?

Absolutely! We actually recommend arriving a day or 2 early to give you more time to recharge and enjoy a bit of ‘me time’ before the tour begins. There might be experiences on your bucket list that we don’t include on the trip, this is the perfect time to fit them in.

Will I get an airport pickup?

Anyone arriving on Day 1 or who decides to book pre-tour accommodation with us will be picked up by our trusted drivers when they land. They’ll be standing waiting at the airport with a Feel Free Travel sign, so you’ll have no issues finding them 🙌🏼

Which airport should I fly into?

Most of the big international airlines will fly in through BKK (Suvarnabhumi International). If you’re on a low-cost airline or 1 of the Asian airlines, you may come in via DMK (Don Mueang International). Both options are good, and we’ll pick you up from either… no worries!

How do I know where to meet at the airport?

We’ll email everyone up-to-date arrival instructions 2 weeks before the trip with exactly where to meet the driver. Once you get picked up, we’ll get you back to the hotel and check-in. If your flight is running late, don’t worry, we’ll be tracking your progress on Google and will be waiting for you to arrive.

What’s the plan for Day 1?

The first day is the ‘Arrival Day’, there isn’t a huge amount planned. It’s the perfect day to relax, catch some sun and get your bearings. In the evening, it’s time to meet your new travel family, as we’ll be taking you all out to one of our favourite spots for dinner and chilled drinks.

After the Trip

What time does the tour finish?

All our tours finish on the morning of the final day, this will give you plenty of time to get back to the airport ready for that flight home or onto your next destination.

What happens after my tour?

It really depends from group to group… sometimes we’ll have a whole bunch of people hanging out once the tour has finished, travelling for days, weeks or even months together. But in others, you’ll have many people going their separate ways. As the trip unfolds, you’ll soon learn about each other's travel plans and share ideas for what adventures lie ahead. The hardest part is saying your goodbyes and giving your last big hugs to the people leaving straight after the trip ends.

Can I get help with return airport transfers?

You sure can, our Group Leaders are available throughout the trip to chat about your onward travel plans. They will be there to offer help and assistance when it comes to booking flights, taxis, buses, and ferries. It’s always a good idea to get your flights booked before you arrive, including any internal flights after your tour.

When should I book my return flight?

We suggest booking your return flight a bit later on the final day for all our trips. With this trip in particular, this is even more important as the tour finishes on the Phi Phi Islands. Transport on the island is reliable, but it’s not as frequent. We suggest booking any flights from Krabi or Phuket no earlier than 2 pm for domestic or 3 pm for international flights. The most common route is a domestic flight from Phuket to Bangkok in the early afternoon to connect with the international flight home. Click here to read a blog we wrote on this, ‘Guide: When and How to Book Flights.’

Can I stay longer and extend my trip?

You sure can, we don’t offer the option to extend your stay, but our awesome Group Leaders are eager to help and support your onward travel plans. You’ll no doubt get ideas from other group members as the trip unfolds, so keep those ideas to yourself until you meet the group.

I’m doing more than 1 trip, how do I book my connecting flight?

We suggest booking those connecting flights soon after booking your big international flights. We’ve written a whole blog to help when planning flights, click here to read more .

Do I get help with onward travel?

Whether you’re on a short break from work or a slightly longer backpacking adventure, our Group Leaders will help with everything from return airport transfers to giving you a bunch of ideas for the rest of your time in South East Asia and beyond.

Thailand Trip FAQs

Is there wifi on tour.

Almost all the places we stay on tour have free WIFI allowing you to stay connected with friends and family back home. There are certain places we visit that don’t, but we will always give you a heads up in advance so that you can prepare and let your loved ones at home know you may be unreachable.

Can I travel solo/come alone?

Absolutely! Our trips are built for solo travellers, and believe us… sharing new experiences with a group of new friends is one of the best things you can do. A large majority of the people that travel with us are 1st-time travellers doing it alone, so don’t worry, you’ll never be alone with us.

What’s the average age of people on these trips?

Our trips are specifically targeted towards individuals who are young at heart. If you’re between the ages of 18-39 and keen on a new adventure, you’re welcome to join us. We’ve found that the average age of our travellers is 22-32, we also get young travellers straight out of school as well as working professionals in their mid to late 30s.

How big are the group sizes?

We keep our group sizes small, with an average of 12-16 people per group, so that everyone gets to know each other and experience things at an enjoyable pace.

What’s included in the price?

We include most of the big ticket items like accommodation, activities, local experiences, secret stops, local guides, a western group leader and a bunch of meals. We also include an airport pickup on arrival!

What should I expect from the included meals?

You should expect almost all your breakfasts to be included to allow us to get the best out of each day. You’ll also get a few lunches on day trips and the odd dinner. We try and find a good balance between including meals and giving you the flexibility to eat what you fancy.

Do you cater for specific dietary/allergy requirements?

We make every effort to prepare for all dietary requirements and will do our best to support you during mealtime. Please provide clear information during the booking form and chat with your Group Leader during the first few days.

What’s not included?

You’ll just need to sort your international flights , travel insurance , visas and spending money 🙌🏼

Do we stay in hostels or hotels?

The accommodation on our trips is something we do better than anyone else, and our tours definitely wouldn’t be the same without the awesome places we stay. We’ve handpicked these places to give you the perfect balance of comfort, security and convenience. We really do love where we stay, and so do all our happy travellers 😍

Who will I share a room with?

All solo travellers will pair up with other travellers of the same sex… girls with girls & guys with guys. If you are travelling with a friend, let us know, and we can put you together… same if you are travelling as a couple, we will arrange a double room where possible. Thailand Tours & Vacations

Two women talking with their guide next to the buddhas at the WatPho temple

Thailand is an idyllic paradise, where jungle-covered karsts plunge into aquamarine waters and the sand is sugar white.

But no matter how clichéd the fantasy, Thailand delivers in spades. The water around Krabi and Ko Tao really is that deep, cool shade of blue. Phi Phi’s limestone karsts really do look like some alien world. And the food? Let’s just say your local Pad Thai has nothing on Chiang Mai’s street stalls or the floating markets of Amphawa, where little old ladies do things with fish sauce and chili you never thought possible. From the waterfalls of Erawan to a homestay with the hill tribes of the Golden Triangle, these adventures go beyond the tourist traps. Buckle up.

Best time to visit thailand.

Thailand's climate is generally hot, humid, and at times (like other South East Asian countries) monsoonal. The seasons differ from coast to coast, so depending on which areas you're visiting, the weather can vary.

Thailand's mainland region is great to visit from November to February when the weather is cooler and dryer.

If you are planning on visiting the Gulf Coast (east), avoid the northeast monsoon that brings rain from October to January. For destinations like Phuket on the west side of the peninsula, the best time is November to April to avoid the other monsoon which causes Thailand's wet season from May to October.

Culture and customs

Often considered the epicenter of Buddhism, religion permeates daily life in Thailand. Sprinkled throughout the country are thousands of golden temples, where you’ll find Buddhist monks in orange robes walking the streets. Young men are expected to spend some time as a monk as it bestows honor on their families. Visitors should be respectful of monks and dress modestly when visiting a temple (cover your knees and shoulders and remove your shoes).

Like other Asian nations, the concept of ‘saving face’ is important. This means avoiding conflict or embarrassment in order to preserve social standing, dignity, and honor. Thai people will go out of their way to avoid ‘losing face’. Losing your temper or raising your voice are surefire ways to lose face and can be perceived as volatile or rude.

Eating and drinking

Thai food has everything from spicy dishes packed with chilis to milder coconut-based curries. With street stalls and night markets all over the country, it's really easy to pick up a snack wherever you are in Thailand. On many Intrepid trips, you'll be given the opportunity to have dinner with a local family – this offers a great chance to see how meals are prepared and learn more about the local culture. Go a step further on our 8-day Thailand Read Food Adventure to watch, eat, prepare, and present tasty and traditional Thai cuisine.

Things to try in Thailand

1. Pad Thai (Phat Thai)

A well-known dish but for good reason. This delicious plate of stir-fried rice noodles garnished with peanuts is full of flavor and can be served with fresh prawns, chicken, tofu, or vegetables.

2. Tom Yum (Tom Yam)

Usually prepared with stock, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, and chili, this soup is widely available in Thailand and has been popularised around the world.

3. Green curry

One of many curries that Thais do so well. Green curry consists of chicken, Thai eggplant, and chilies bathed in a coconut milk-based sauce.

4. Som tam (green papaya salad)

This northern dish of shredded raw papaya, cherry tomatoes, and green beans is a tantalizing mix of sweet, spicy, and sour flavors.

5. Coconut water

For a super fresh thirst quencher, try coconut water straight from the husk.

6. Tropical fruit

Fruit shakes and fresh fruit juices are widely available from markets and restaurants – make the most of all the tropical fruits of Thailand.

Geography and environment

Sharing borders with South East Asian neighbors  Cambodia ,   Laos ,   Malaysia   , and   Myanmar   (Burma), Thailand's natural environment varies greatly from region to region. From the steamy jungles and misty highlands in the north to the white sand beaches and picturesque islands of the south, Thailand's everchanging landscape has been fascinating and entertaining travelers for centuries.

The capital, Bangkok, is a heaving, urban jungle with skyscrapers, street vendors, markets, cars, tuk-tuks, bicycles, and masses of people all competing for space. Despite this, there are pockets of quiet beauty to be found with parks, temples, and traditional shop fronts scattered throughout the city.

Rural areas in the north are typically quieter, with locals living a more traditional way of life; the frenetic pace of the city giving way to a more slow-paced, agricultural-based lifestyle. Houses are simple, there's more space and less of the modern conveniences. Jungles, rivers, bamboo huts, and teak houses are more commonly seen here, and birds and other animal life are more abundant.

History and government

Early history.

Communities based on agriculture (such as rice growing) inhabited Siam (Thailand) as early as the 6th century. In the following centuries, Siam came under the influence of the Khmer, Dvaravati, and Malay cultures, with some temples and monuments in modern-day Thailand showing evidence of this influence. In the 13th century, the city of Sukhothai in northern Thailand became an important capital. The ruins of the Sukhothai Historical Park (a UNESCO World Heritage site) feature remnants of the royal palace, temples, and other buildings and highlight the artistic and architectural features of the era.

Ayutthaya rose to prominence as the new capital in the 14th century and was considered a powerhouse of South East Asia as one of the most important centers of trade in the world. Enduring many battles, invasions, overthrows, and coups, Ayutthaya's far-reaching trade with other regions ensured a flourishing influence of art, weaponry, religion, and cuisine. Much wealth was generated by this enormous empire, with grand palaces, ornate buildings, and huge temples featured throughout the city. All this came to an end when the Burmese invaded in the 18th century, bringing the kingdom to ruin and resulting in the loss of many artistic and cultural treasures. Despite this, the ruins of the city are still standing, have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and are a great day trip from Bangkok. See the sights of ancient and recent Thai history during a 3 day River Kwai and Ancient Thai Kingdoms tour.

Recent history

Thonburi was established as the capital of Siam by General Taksin in the late 18th century, yet this didn't last long with Taksim being deposed and executed not long after. Bangkok was then named capital by General Chakri, who became Rama I - the first king of the Rama Dynasty.

Over the years, Siam (Thailand) remained the only South East Asian country to remain free from European colonization. In 1932, the Siamese Revolution resulted in a constitutional monarchy being formed, and in 1941, Thailand invaded French Indochina, overpowered the French, and claimed Laos.

In the last thirty years, Thailand has seen political power change hands many times, often due to coups, revolutions, and protests. Despite this, Thailand’s economy continues to grow due to its strong tourist industry. Enduring all this, the much-loved King Rama IX has reigned as the Head of State since 1946 - claiming the title of the longest-reigning monarch in the world and providing Thai people with a stable figure to rely upon.

Top 10 iconic Thai landscapes

5. Ayuthaya

Modern meets ancient in Ayuthaya. The current city intertwines itself with the remnants of what was once one of Asia's great capitals. Walk the streets in search of clues to its imperial past and hire a bike to ride through the countryside, exploring the area's ruins.

Enjoy this historical park for yourself during a 10 day Highlights of Thailand tour.

6. Sukhothai

This former capital is a history buff's heaven. Nicknamed the 'Dawn of Happiness', Sukhothai still recalls Siam's golden age with its superb statues, marvelous monuments, and lotus flowers in full bloom. A trip to the night market is a real eye-opener; try everything from fried rice to fried bugs.

Stop by Sukhothai on our 8 day Explore Northern Thailand adventure.

The waters surrounding Krabi are dotted with hundreds of limestone karst islands. Kayakers and rock climbers will love exploring them, while others can travel to the nearby floating villages or just relax on one of the region's perfect beaches.

We've made sure to stop by Krabi on our incredible 28 day Bangkok to Bali adventure - you'll thank us later.

8. Golden Triangle

The area where the Thai, Laotian, and Burmese borders meet has long been associated with colorful cultures and illicit opium trade. The opium may have gone but the color hasn't and the markets offer all sorts of amazing local handicrafts.

Set your sights on this incredible part of the world on a 3 days Chiang Mai and Golden Triangle.

9. Khao Sok National Park

For a real jungle experience, spend a couple of days in Khao Sok National Park. Thick rainforests, limestone cliffs, waterfalls, and mountains make a wild playground.

Coast through the must-see sights of Phang Nga Bay on our 8 day Phuket Sailing Adventure.

Bustling street markets filled with colorful vendors selling an assortment of goods can be found in small villages and large towns throughout the country. Luxurious, multi-level shopping malls that rival those in European cities are increasingly popping up.

The Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok is perhaps the largest and most extensive market in the world. Here vendors sell everything you can think of, from ceramics to Thai silk to vintage clothing. Bartering is expected at markets and most small vendors. As a rule of thumb, if the price isn’t listed, it’s negotiable. But remember, Thais appreciate friendliness and a sense of humor. The more aggressive you are in trying to get a deal, the less likely you are to get one.

Things to buy in Thailand

  • Vibrant fabric cushions, tablecloths, and hammocks
  • Silver jewelry (look for reputable stores)
  • Handcrafted umbrellas or parasols
  • Thai silk scarves, ties, wraps, and clothing
  • Colorful Celadon ceramics
  • Tailor-made clothing

Festival and events

Loy krathong (festival of lights).

During the 12th lunar month, people across the country gather around lakes, rivers, and canals to symbolically let their worries float away in the most magical way – by releasing colorful lotus-shaped rafts holding candles, incense, and flowers onto the water.

Yee Peng (or Yi Peng)

At the same time that Loy Krathong is taking place, Chiang Mai also celebrates Yee Peng. Religious events, cultural activities, and street parades all mark this Buddhist tradition. But what makes this festival truly spectacular is the release of thousands of sky lanterns that illuminate the sky.

Songkran (Thai New Year)

What happens when New Year’s Day falls during the height of summer? It morphs into a giant water fight. Some towns celebrate just on the day (April 13), while others stretch it out for several days of concerts, ceremonies, and other wet festivities.

Chiang Mai Flower Festival

Flowers are used in ways you never thought imaginable at this colorful three-day event in February. Come for the parade of impressive floral floats, and stay for the tasty Thai street food, music, and performances.

Is tipping customary in Thailand?

Tipping isn’t customary in Thailand, but feel free to leave restaurants, drivers or service workers a small tip if the service has been particularly good. It’s always appreciated.

What is internet access like in Thailand?

The Internet can be accessed at hotels and internet cafes in large cities and tourist areas but is limited in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Thailand?

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Thailand’s urban areas, but may not be available on some of the islands and in more remote areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home.

What are the toilets like in Thailand?

Squat toilets are most common in Thailand, although western-style flushable toilets can be found in larger hotels and some tourist areas. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided.

Can I drink the tap water in Thailand?

Drinking tap water isn’t recommended in Thailand. Avoid drinks with ice and make sure to peel fruit before eating it. Help the environment and try to avoid buying bottled water. Instead, fill a reusable water bottle with filtered water. Your leader or hotel can tell you where to find filtered water.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Thailand?

Credit cards are usually accepted by hotels, large retailers and tourist sites but are less commonly accepted by smaller vendors and family-run restaurants in rural areas. Market stalls and street vendors will not accept credit cards. Always carry enough cash for smaller purchases in case credit cards are not an option.

What is ATM access like in Thailand?

ATMs are widely available in larger cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas. Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Do I need any vaccinations before visiting Thailand?

No vaccines are required in order to enter Thailand but some are recommended for protection against disease. Visit your doctor or travel clinic for advice and make sure to schedule vaccinations 4-6 weeks before your departure date, as some require time to become effective.

Is Thailand a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

As a whole, Thailand is a hassle-free destination for LGBTQIA+ travelers. Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket all have fairly prominent gay scenes. Be aware that Thais typically do not engage in public displays of affection, regardless of sexual orientation.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.

What's the transport like in Thailand?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators, and are more fun.

Depending on which trip you're on while in Thailand, you may find yourself traveling by Songthaew.

Get to know the locals as you share a ride in these converted pick-up trucks. Snagging a seat on the ‘two benches’ (the literal meaning of songthaew) is a popular way of getting around South East Asia.

See Thailand from the ground level on a Saamlaw, the three-wheeled wonder. Sometimes motorized but usually pedal-powered by a local, it’s a fun way to get from A to B or see a new city's sights.

What's the accommodation like in Thailand?

Traveling with Intrepid is a little bit different. We endeavor to provide travelers with an authentic experience to remember, so we try to keep accommodations as unique and traditional as possible.

When traveling with us in Thailand you may find yourself staying in a Homestay.

Experience friendly Thai hospitality while staying with a local family living a traditional way of life. Make new friends, pick up some local lingo and leave smiling.

The ultimate room with a view - spend the night on a floating bamboo raft house. Enjoy the seclusion, soak up the serenity and leave feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

Does my trip to Thailand support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Thailand directly support our foundation partner, EcoThailand Foundation .

EcoThailand Foundation is on a mission to educate and empower local communities, on the tourist Islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Paluay, about environmental issues like climate change, waste management, nature appreciation, conservation and sustainable lifestyles. Donations from our trips help EcoThailand's environmental guardianship education program for children in local state schools.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

All of our accommodations were great (we upgraded to 4 star hotels), we were met by drivers and guides as scheduled, our tour operator checked in with us daily and was very responsive if we had any questions or wanted changes in our itinerary (adding a sunrise visit at Angkor Wat). Highlights were visiting the temples around Siem Reap, trekking among the rice terraces in SaPa, cruising in Halong Bay, and touring the Mekong Delta. We would highly recommend this company. • Compass09731214388 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Fabulous Family Holiday We did the Land of Smiles Thailand & Vietnam in 16 days tour (6 days in Thailand, 10 days in Vietnam). This tour was so much fun and so interesting. We saw many different types of temples, ways of life, ate amazing food (allergies were well catered for) and met some great people. Realistic Asia were awesome to deal with and stayed in constant contact with us throughout the trip. Everything was seamless from flights, to transfers, to tour pickups. The guides were wonderful and so knowledgeable and the activities were varied and great fun. We chose the 4 star hotel option and all the hotels were lovely. We particularly enjoyed our time in Bangkok, Halong Bay, Hue, and the upper and lower Mekong region. We took our two teenage boys and they had a great time visiting the markets in each place and learned so much about Thai and Vietnamese history and culture. This tour was particularly good because it had a good balance of activities versus free time to do what you wanted which was important for me as I have mobility limitations so it allowed me to have some slower relax days as well as some very busy days. • Ian W 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Perfectly organised tour. We actually did this tour backwards, south to north and customised it a little. Initially we had some doubts about using a local agent, we shouldn't have been worried. From the moment we enquired via Tourradar their agent Long Pham opened a WhatsApp dialogue with me. He is knowledgeable, professional, accomodating and attentive. He was in contact at every step from initial enquiry to making sure we'd checked in for our return flight. The hotels booked were comfortable, clean and well located, each airport meet and return from hotel were private transfers, no multi drop bus rides, all tours booked (except Halong Bay) were private, just two of us, guide and driver, all tour guides used were personable, knowledgeable and flexible to our needs, don't think some of the bigger Western tour operators would have you spend an afternoon drinking rice whine in the home of a local farmer. Tip, either get yourself an eSim (used Holafly which was faultless), or a local sim, that way you have pretty much 24x7 comms open to your Realistic Asia agent. Read more Written April 23, 2024

I travelled solo and booking this package was the perfect way for me to stay occupied, meet new people, and have a comfortable and safe trip. My tour operator, Rosie Nguyen, was very responsive and helpful throughout the entirety of my trip, allowing me to flexibly ask questions when necessary. She was very kind and I was able to rely on her throughout my trip. One thing I would recommend is to ask for a detailed itinerary for each day beforehand because otherwise you go into the tour pretty blindsided, not knowing the hourly time blocks and what time the tour is going to end until you’re sitting in the bus after pick up and your tour guide goes through the day’s activities. We stayed in Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An, Hanoi, and an overnight cruise in Halong Bay. My wife and I absolutely loved Vietnam: - the friendly people, the amazing local food and how good it tastes, the beautiful scenery, beautiful temples and pagodas, and the traffic - although chaotic and wild, we did get used to it and managed to gain confidence to walk across quite a few streets without any incidents. The customized tour package, including all hotels, transfers, tours, internal domestic flights, and English-speaking guides were all arranged by Lucy and it was all coordinated and executed without any issue. I cannot praise Lucy enough for her promptness, professionalism, quick responses, and customizing our tour by adding a couple of extra days at the beginning and end, as we requested. She even checked in with us during the trip to see if all was going well. Thank you Lucy (and Realistic Asia), you really made our great holiday an even better experience. BANGKOK – A young activist in Thailand who went on a hunger strike after being jailed for advocating reform of the country’s monarchy system died Tuesday in a prison hospital, officials said. The death sparked fresh calls for reviewing the judicial process that allows political offenders accused of nonviolent offenses to be held for extended periods in prison ahead of being tried.

Netiporn “Bung” Sanesangkhom, 28, was a member of the activist group Thaluwang, known for their bold and aggressive campaigns demanding reform of the monarchy and abolition of the law that makes it illegal to defame members of the royal family. The group’s name can be loosely translated as “breaking through the palace,” a reference to its open criticism of Thailand’s monarchy.

Recommended Videos

She appears to be the first political activist in Thailand to have died after carrying on a partial hunger strike for 110 days while she was awaiting trial.

The Thailand branch of the human rights group Amnesty International described Netiporn’s death as “a shocking reminder that Thai authorities are denying activists their right to temporary release on bail and using detention to silence the peaceful expression of dissent.”

“This is a grim day for Thai society, highlighting the severe judicial harassment and the justice system’s failure to recognize basic human rights,” the group said. “Speaking out should not lead to death; it should inspire change."

The popular opposition Move Forward party, which has also campaigned for reform of the monarchy, issued a statement saying that people should not be jailed for holding political opinions and that persons accused of political offenses should be granted bail.

Foreign diplomats and ambassadors from the U.S., U.K., Canada, the EU and elsewhere offered their condolences after Netiporn's death. German Ambassador Ernest Reichel wrote on social platform X: “My wish would be that political disagreements are not taken to such bitter and extreme consequences."

Thailand’s monarchy until recent years was widely considered an untouchable, bedrock element of Thai nationalism. Criticism of the monarchy was taboo, and insulting or defaming key royal family members remains punishable by up to 15 years in prison under a lese majeste law, usually referred to as Article 112 of Thailand’s Criminal Code.

Student-led pro-democracy protests beginning in 2020 openly criticized the monarchy, leading to vigorous prosecutions under the law, which had previously been relatively rarely employed. Critics say the law is often wielded as a tool to quash political dissent.

The protest movement faded due to government harassment and the coronavirus pandemic, but Netiporn was one of more than 270 activists charged with the royal defamation law since the protests in 2020-21.

Netiporn suffered cardiac arrest early Tuesday morning, and medical teams spent several hours trying to resuscitate her. She was pronounced dead just before noon, according to a statement from the Corrections Department.

She had two charges of lese majeste pending against her, both of them involving conducting polls in public spaces in 2022 asking people’s opinion about the royal family, according to the group Thai Lawyers for Human Rights. Her release on bail was revoked in January due to her participation in a political rally last year.

Netiporn started her hunger strike after she was detained in January. The Corrections Department said she began eating and drinking water again after April 4. However, the human rights lawyer group’s latest update on her condition on April 25 said she was still fasting.

Two fellow jailed activists are also carrying out hunger strikes. Both are Thaluwang members who were also charged with lese majeste for agitating for reform of the monarchy, and they started their hunger strikes about a month after Netiporn.

Netiporn’s lawyers had applied for her to be transferred from the Central Corrections Hospital to Thammasat University Hospital but she was never granted a prolonged stay there for treatment, said her lawyer, Kritsadang Nutcharas. The authorities said they would establish the legal cause of death.

“Does it seem like there’s standard treatment in the Thai justice system when we compare what these kids are going through with their political charges and what some prominent adults have gone through?” Kritsadang said. He was making an apparent reference to former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who returned from exile last year to serve a prison term in corruption-related cases but never spent a single night in jail on grounds of ill health.

At a candlelight vigil Tuesday night outside Bangkok’s Criminal Court, another activist facing lese majeste charges, Panusaya “Rung” Sitthijirawattanakul, decried the failure of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s government to ease the plight of political prisoners.

“Do you need someone to die first before you think of doing something?” she said. “How many of us have to die before you start listening to us? We are not people to be scared of. We’re just ordinary people who are asking for something. So this is very brutal.”

Thaluwang has held high-profile protests calling not only for reform of the monarchy, but also changes in the justice system and an end to political persecution through the courts. It has also called for rejection of Thailand’s application to join the U.N. Human Rights Council.

Thailand announced its bid for a seat on the rights council for the 2025-2027 term after the current government took office last year, seeking to show its commitment to protect human rights. Critics charge that the reality of law enforcement in the country strongly contradicts its ambition to be recognized by the international community as a human rights defender.

Human Rights Watch has raised concerns over “the Thai government’s use of arbitrary arrest and pretrial detention to punish critics of the monarchy for their views,” which it says is a violation of their rights under international human rights law.

Thai Experience

I had an incredible experience with Intro Travel on the 13-day Thai experience tour. Our group leader, Dan W, was absolutely amazing - his passion for Thailand and dedication to ensuring we had a great time was evident in everything he did. Not only did I make lifelong friends on this trip, but I also learned so much about the country through Dan’s “fun facts.” Any issues were handled promptly and professionally by Dan, who always maintained a friendly and approachable presence. Cleanliness was maintained through all of the breath taking accommodation. We had the honour of experiencing Songkran during our tour which is definitely a highlight of the trip, an experience I will never forget - with the pleasure of experiencing it with the most amazing people. I highly recommend this tour to anyone considering booking - I have already put down a deposit on my next trip, and if you get Dan as your leader, consider yourself very lucky, hopefully I’ll see him in Sri Lanka! Five stars all the way!⭐️

Amazing two weeks in Thailand Unforgettable trip in Thailand. The tour was paced well even if some of the places were so incredible you didn't want to leave. Our tour guide, Jamie, was great the whole way through. I cannot recommend highly enough!

It was a far out experience indeed! This tour is full of exciting places visited and offered a variety in the itinerary. To add icing on the cake, we were so pleased with our tour guide, Suchin Temo who was an active, up to date, informative and fun person to be around with, to say the least. He's innovative and caring and his experience and mastery of his job is what is exemplified the whole time we were with him. We won’t mind booking another tour with him as our guide as we never had a dull moment with him at all. Our driver was an added bonus as he was an expert on the area as well as a safe chauffeur too. Overall it was an AAAAAAA+++++++ Experience! We are among the satisfied customers of Intrepid!

Thailand Island Hopper - 9 days

Unique experience with lovely surprises! Me and my partner booked the 9 day tour in Thailand. Honestly it was an amazing experience! The tour was well organised and our tour guide Jamie was very knowledgeable and accommodating with our needs. She also introduced lovely surprises along the way, which made it even more interesting! (Not gonna mention them here-book for yourselves!) Oh, and the food was always delicious! Either the included meals or anywhere we dined as a group, the food was always tasty. Highly recommended tour from all aspects!

Experience Thailand 9 Days - Bangkok to the North, Small Group Tour (English Only)

Great tour for cultural experience of Thailand! It covered palaces, stupas/temples, floating markets, traditional craft demonstrations and an optional cultural show. The guide was very friendly, punctual and accommodating. The tour itinerary was good but a bit heavy on temples and stupas and light on daily experience of locals. To be clear, some stupas, temples and palaces were unique, spectacular and/or designated as UNESCO heritage sites! Even though the tour was advertised as 9 days, the first and last days were only for airport transfers without any itinerary: It's a bit misleading! In addition to historic sites, I wanted to experience the daily life of locals including authentic Thai cuisine. However, the meals covered by the tour were blend and did not represent authentic flavors that I experienced in floating markets or night markets. The drive from Bangkok to the north was smooth and scenic, interspersed with some tour stops. Some hotels on the trip were not close to night markets or even restaurants, limiting us to have dinner in some hotels.

Naa was an excellent guide, very helpful, well-organised and provided plenty of opportunity for extra experiences. The tour covered a good range of experiences. The overnight train was excellent, the visit to the H'mong Village was interesting, as was the elephant hospital and orchid farm, and particularly Kanchanaburi. Our group was very small but harmonious, making it easy to get around. Naa provided plenty of time at each venue to ensure that no-one felt rushed and everyone had time to see what they wanted. The bikes in Chiang Mai were excellent, those in Sukhothai were functional but not of the same quality. The picnic in Sukhothai was brilliant! Well organised, and the food was of an extremely high quality. Our hosts went above and beyond, including mopping the floor before we sat down :)

This was a wonderful holiday during Christmas and new year. Our tour guides in Bangkok Mr Bro and Snowwhite were very knowledgeable of Thai history. Railway market and Floating market visits were unique experience. Chiang Mai and nearby visits were probably the best part of the trip. Thank you Mr Tree and Johny who took very good care of us. Overall an excellent trip!

Xander Schauffele fires 62 to set PGA Championship record

Last summer, Xander Schauffele matched the all-time low round in a major.

He matched it again Thursday at the PGA Championship, setting this event’s record low score in the process.

Schauffele opened in 9-under 62 at Valhalla Golf Club, matching his 62 from the opening round at last year’s U.S. Open (also shot that day by Rickie Fowler), a major record score that was first carded by Branden Grace at the 2017 Open Championship.

A week after finishing runner-up to Rory McIlroy at the Wells Fargo Championship – McIlroy played an eight-hole stretch in 8-under Sunday, en route to a five-stroke victory – Schauffele put his foot on the accelerator Thursday morning and didn’t let up. It gave him a three-stroke lead over Tony Finau and Sahith Theegala through the morning wave.

“I think I look at every tough spot now as another opportunity, try to flip it into a positive and make myself want to earn it versus getting scared of the moment,” Schauffele told PGATOUR.COM after his record start at the PGA. “Just embrace it, and really earn it and all the hard work you’ve been doing is worth it. Kind of taking that mentality on.

“I have been putting myself in some really good spots, I’ve been playing really good golf and there are obviously times when you’ll get a little uncomfortable. And there were a few times where I was a little uncomfortable on Sunday, and my perspective on that is slowly changing a little bit.”

Schauffele was plenty comfortable Thursday at Valhalla, hitting 12 of 14 fairways, 14 of 18 greens and needing just 24 putts. He ranked second in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and first in Strokes Gained: Putting through the morning wave, a potent combination.

Eighteen rounds of 63 had previously been recorded in the PGA Championship. No score of 62 had been carded at this event, which is now in its 106th playing.

“I’ll take 62 in a major any day,” Schauffele said Thursday. “It's a great start to a big tournament. One I'm obviously always going to take.”

Schauffele rewrote tournament history on Thursday, his opening round at Valhalla including nine birdies and nine pars. The San Diego State alum began on No. 10, rattling off birdies on Nos. 11, 13, 15, 16 and 18 to make the turn in 5-under 31. He added birdies at Nos. 2, 4, 5 and 7, and he closed with a two-putt par at the par-4 ninth hole to secure the PGA Championship’s record low single-round score.

Schauffele is no stranger to hot starts at majors. He entered the week with a 69.81 scoring average in the opening round of majors, the lowest all-time career first-round scoring average in major championship play among those who have appeared in at least 25 majors (courtesy of the Elias Sports Bureau). He has been a frequent contender at majors for nearly a decade, recording 12 top-10 finishes in 27 career major starts entering this week. This includes two runner-up finishes – 2018 Open Championship, 2019 Masters – but he has yet to win a major championship. His week in Kentucky couldn’t have started much better, as he looks to change that.

The only player to shoot 64 or better during a PGA Championship round at Valhalla GC was Jose Maria Olazabal, who carded a 63 (9-under that year) in the third round of the 2000 PGA Championship. A dozen other players have shot 65 here, including eight different players in 2014.

Schauffele’s round Thursday is one to remember. Now he aims to convert it into his first major title.

“I think not winning makes you want to win more, as weird as that is,” Schauffele said Thursday. “For me, at least, I react to it, and I want it more and more and more, and it makes me want to work harder and harder and harder. The top feels far away, and I feel like I have a lot of work to do. But just slowly chipping away at it.”
