Binondo Food Trip 2024: BEST Restaurants and Food Stalls to Visit

Binondo is one of the best foodie destinations in Manila. Featuring hole-in-the-wall restaurants and unassuming food stalls, it’s a great destination for families and friends who want to taste authentic Chinese dishes.

I’d already been on a Binondo food trip twice and both times were great. This is something that I probably won’t get tired of, as it’s relatively cheap and there are always new dining options to find. My latest visit fell on a weekend, and admittedly, I was caught off-guard with the long queues everywhere! Nonetheless, it was a happy (tummy) experience.

Here’s our updated guide on the best restaurants and food spots for those doing a DIY food trip in Binondo.

About Binondo

Wai ying fastfood, lan zhou la mien, ying ying tea house, sincerity cafe and restaurant, cafe mezzanine, chuan kee fast food, dong bei dumplings, new po heng lumpia house, shanghai fried siopai, eng bee tin, polland hopia factory and cafe, lord stow’s bakery, vege select, lga fast food estero, how to get to binondo, tips for your binondo food trip, book a binondo food tour, what to read next:.

Couple shot in Binondo Chinatown

Binondo is known as “ the oldest Chinatown in the world .” Its name is derived from the word “binundok”, which means low-lying hills.

It was established in the 1500s by the Spaniards as a settlement for the Catholic Chinese. It then grew as the center of trade in Manila. Today, it’s a cultural and foodie attraction with lots of restaurants serving affordable, delicious Filipino and Chinese delicacies such as dumplings, noodles, and rice meals.

Binondo is one of the spots in Manila for a food trip. Other places worth visiting include Maginhawa in Quezon City, Kapitolyo in Ortigas, and Poblacion in Makati.

Top-Rated Restaurants in Binondo

Whether it’s your first time in Binondo or here on a recurring visit, here are the tried-and-tested restaurants that you shouldn’t miss. We also included our opinions on those we’ve tried.

Note that operating hours may change without notice.

Group shot in Wai Ying Restaurant

One of the most beloved restaurants in Binondo serving authentic Cantonese cuisines, from dumplings to rice meals. They have generous servings and their rice dishes can be good for sharing!

We personally loved their beef noodle soup and their other rice meals were good too.

  • What to order : Dimsum, dumplings, roasted duck rice, lemon chicken rice, soy/asado chicken rice, congee, beef noodle soup
  • Open hours : 7AM to 10PM

Lan Zhou La Mien is famous for their hand-pulled noodle soups. You can even witness a live demonstration of how they make the noodles.

  • What to order : Beef lamien
  • Open hours : 10AM to 9PM

One of the top-rated restaurants in Binondo, Ying Ying Tea House offers affordable and delicious Chinese dishes such as congee, rice meals, dumplings, and noodles.

  • What to order : Dimsum (pork siomai, hakaw), chicken feet, yang chow fried rice, spare ribs tausi, and more

Sincerity’s pride is their fried chicken, but you can also order other Chinese food such as pancit, lumpiang shanghai, and more.

  • What to order : Fried chicken, oyster cake, kikiam
  • Open hours : 9AM to 7PM (up to 2PM only on Sundays)

Known as “The Fireman’s Coffee Shop,” this café donates their revenue to the Binondo Paco Fire Search and Rescue Brigade.

  • What to order : Soup #5, dumplings such as lava pao and xiao long bao
  • Open hours : 8AM to 9PM (opens early at 7AM on Sundays)

Food at Chuan Kee

In the same building as Cafe Mezzanine, you’ll find Chuan Kee Fast Food. Chuan Kee Fast Food is the oldest fastfood restaurant in Binondo . They are known for their kiampong, gokhong, maki, and lechon kawali, as well as other Chinoy favorites.

We liked their kiam pong rice and xiao long bao, but some of their main dishes (particularly the fried chicken and pork asado) were rather ordinary. However, overall their food is decent and reasonably priced. Serving time is fast as well, so it’s great for groups.

  • What to order : Kiampong, pork maki mi
  • Open hours : 9AM to 9PM (opens early at 7AM on Sundays)

Best Snacks and Pasalubong

Dong Bei Dumplings - kuchay

This store is known for their pork and kuchay dumplings. You can order them steamed or fried for take-out or buy frozen packs for pasalubong.

We’d been here twice, and I actually liked the dumplings better before. I found the wrapper too thick for my taste, but my companions were happy about the food, so judge it for yourself.

  • Open hours : 8:30AM to 7PM (closes early at 6PM on Sundays)

New Po Heng Lumpia House

Found along Carvajal Street, this nondescript food stall serves one of the best fresh lumpias (spring rolls) in Binondo, served with their own version of special sweet-spicy sauce.

This is one of my favorite food stops at Binondo as the quality of the food has remained the same over the years and the fresh lumpia is delish!

  • Open hours : 8:30M to 7PM (closes early at 6PM on Sundays)

Located along Ongpin Street, this food stall serves cheap and delicious fried siopao that you can eat or take home as pasalubong.

  • Open hours : 7AM to 6PM

Eng Bee Tin - mooncakes

A visit to Binondo won’t be complete without buying food pasalubong from Eng Bee Tin. It’s most famous for its hopia and tikoy. I also recommend buying a box of pineapple cake, which is super addicting.

There is more than one branch of Eng Bee Tin in Binondo. Its flagship store, which is located in Ongpin Street, is a 2-storey building where can buy goods and dine in. They have an in-house restaurant called Great Buddha Cafe , located at the 2nd floor.

In 2023, they also launched a food stall at their flagship store, called Binondo Bites , which sells fried xiao long bao. This is one of the trendy food at Binondo.

Established in 1966, this store serves different kinds of hopia (mung bean cake), as well as mooncakes, tikoy, and other delicacies.

  • Open hours : 8AM to 6PM (closes early at 5PM on Sundays)

This bakery is famous for their egg tarts, which are soft and creamy – perfect for those with a sweet tooth.

  • Open hours : 9AM to 7PM

Other restaurants to try

Here are other worthwhile Binondo restaurants you can visit:

Formery known as Quan Yin Chay, Vege Select is a highly rated restaurant serving vegan and vegetarian dishes. Recently, they have become popular for their sugar-coated strawberries and other fruits.

  • Open hours : 6AM to 8PM

This canteen-style fastfood serves affordable meals, though they are mostly known for exotic dishes such as frog legs.

  • What to order : Fried garlic frog legs
  • Open hours : 9:30AM to 7:30PM

Established in the 1960s, it is one of the oldest restaurants in Binondo. Masuki serves comfort food, including their bestseller mami noodles.

  • What to order : Beef mami

The easiest way to commute to Binondo is by the LRT Station. Get off at either Carriedo Station (Sta. Cruz Church) or D. Jose Station (Binondo Church). From there, it’s a few minutes walk to Binondo.

If you’re bringing a car, here are the parking spaces available:

  • Mall parking : For secure parking, head to Lucky Chinatown Mall (open from 10AM to 9PM). It’s only a short walk to the food spots in Binondo.
  • Street parking : This is the cheapest option, as it only costs P50 for a whole day. However, it is difficult to find a free spot on weekends and holidays. An alternative would be the parking at Binondo Church.
  • Pay parking : You can find pay parking along Yuchengco St. and Escolta St. This is what we recommend especially if you’re visiting on a weekend.

Here are some commonly asked questions about Binondo:

  • Best time to visit : Binondo is a popular day tour in Manila, particularly during Chinese New Year where you can do a food crawl and see dragon dance performances at the same time. If you want to avoid the crowd, it’s best to go here on regular weekdays. If you’re going on weekends or holidays, prepare to wait in long queues especially in the popular restaurants.
  • What to wear : Wear breathable, comfortable clothing and sturdy footwear, as you’ll probably do a lot of walking.
  • What to bring : A bottle of water in case you get tired and thirsty; an eco-bag if you want to buy pasalubong.
  • How much is the budget : It depends on how many restaurants and food stalls you plan to visit. In a small group, a safe budget is around P1500 per person.

Couple shot in Binondo Church

Other things you can do in Binondo:

  • Visit the Binondo Church, which is a heritage site built during the Spanish period.
  • Drop by the Chinatown Museum to learn more about the history of Binondo.
  • Take a stroll around Binondo and visit general merchandise stores, jewelry shops along Ongpin Street, and feng shui and crystal stores. If you’re up for some fun activities, have your fortune read in the area! I had a tarot reading in our visit and it was one of the best ones I’ve had. (I’m an avid fan of tarot reading.)
  • Head to Manila Bay for the sunset.

Binondo Chinatown Museum display

Binondo Travel Tips:

  • Binondo is generally safe. However, as with other city locations, it’s best to practice good common sense and keep an eye on your belongings at all times.
  • Plan your itinerary and decide which food stops you want to visit ahead of time. Most likely, you’ll only visit around 5 restaurants / food stalls.
  • A food trip in Binondo is best done with a partner or friends, so you can share food and split expenses.
  • If you want the Binondo food trip experience but in a more convenient setting, you can go instead to Lucky Chinatown Mall where you can find Chinese restaurants such as King Chef , Shi Lin , and Sincerity , as well as pasalubong stores such as Eng Bee Tin. This tip is particularly useful for families with young kids in tow.

For organized food trips in Binondo, it’s easiest to book via Klook .

Binondo food crawl: Must-visit food spots in Manila’s Chinatown

From classic chinese eats to exotic ones, here are some dishes you shouldn’t miss trying when in binondo.

Being the oldest Chinatown in the world, Binondo has been the home of some of the best traditional and modern Chinese cuisines, making it a true food haven for any foodies craving tasty oriental dishes. Set within the Philippines’ capital, Manila, Binondo has its own unique vibe, with its ancient architecture, dragon-hugged light posts, and vibrant stores adding to its charm. If you’re thinking of going on a food adventure in Binondo’s Chinatown, below are some of the food spots and eats we visited and tried as we go along its red walkways.

binondo food trip best

Cafe Mezzanine

A quick taste of classic Chinese cuisine is what diners will get from Cafe Mezzanine, also dubbed as “The Fireman's Coffee Shop.” Above one of the most beloved restaurants in Binondo, Chuan Kee (more of this later), the cafe and its offerings are definitely suited for a crowd of any age. What you should order is its pork xiao long bao (P240/per order), a steamy plate of 10 tiny buns that are meaty, juicy, and just delicious. Something for the sweet tooths are the Lava paos (P130/per order), which are steamed buns filled with sweet custard that oozes out the moment you cut them in half, hence, its name.

Lord Stow's Bakery

Home to one of the best egg tarts you can feast on in the city, Lord Stow’s Bakery is a perfect stop to grab hand-held treats you can eat while walking. Hailed from Macau, this humble bakery now has different branches all over Metro Manila. But munching on its goodies in Binondo sure is a different experience. The egg tarts (P56/solo, P220/box of four, P320/box of six, and P630/dozen) have the perfect amount of sweetness. Their crust is flakey, complementing the velvety texture of the filling.

Wai Ying Fast Food

Serving authentic Cantonese dishes and more is Wai Ying Fast Food. Good thing we had a box of Lord Stow's Bakery’s egg tarts because there is a long waitlist before getting in the restaurant. Its shop window gives a perfect view of what you should order. Roasted ducks, the scent from its broth pot, and rows of bamboo steamers will excite your tastebuds to try one of its noodle dishes. What we ordered was the roasted duck mami. Veggies and egg noodles swimming in hot broth with slices of duck topping them. It’s just comforting and definitely worth the wait. We also got a refreshing almond jelly drink, which seems like its version of the clear palamig seen in Divisoria, only that the jellies are white and not transparent.

Estero Fast Food

Just a few rounds of walking along Ongpin and you’ll find Estero Fast Food. Don’t be fooled by its name because its offerings are definitely something not to miss, especially, for the brave foodies. One of the specials is its frog leg dishes. But what we ordered was its best-seller buttered chicken. Just imagine, crispy fried chicken drenched in melted butter with loads of garlic. A platter of it will definitely make you order additional cups of rice. Maybe, will be brave next time to order its sizzling frog legs.

Shanghai Fried Siopao

Our next stop was at Shanghai Fried Siopao. Since 1985, the store has been producing steamed buns so good that people wait in line and order in bulk just to enjoy them. Its fried siopao (P35/solo) is everything that you want your siopao should be. It has a generous meat filling with loads of onions wrapped in soft, cloud-like buns. Truly, one of the best treats to have in your hands as you explore Binondo, even without a sauce.

Chuan Kee

Closing our food trip in Binondo is Chuan Kee. One of the oldest restaurants in Binondo, it has captured the hearts (and tummies) of diners with its assortment of food offerings, from Chinese soups and stir-fried dishes to Filipino favorites. One of the highlights of its menu is Soup No. 5, an immunity-boosting soup made of tonic wine, Chinese herbal medicine, and bull’s testes. But, just like frog legs, we’ll go on and try the stew during our next visit. What we had was the Cha-bihon, a noodle dish with generous toppings of vegetables, meatballs, and dumplings—a perfect plate to end the long walks and hours waiting in line to try the different eats Binindo has to offer. It is best to get some fried siopao first before heading to Chuan Kee because there is always a line of diners waiting to get in.

Manila Chinatown: A first timer’s guide to Binondo Food Trip

binondo food trip best

Having spent 4 years studying inside Intramuros back in college, I asked myself why the hell I did not become a foodie when I was always a few sprints away from overrated and underrated kainans of Manila?

Well, that’s one of the maaaany regrets of my teenage years but I am making up with self now.

binondo food trip best

And so fast forward one day of February, me and my coffee friends went to Binondo : the world’s oldest Chinatown. Damn. This food crawl is also pretty much a walk down in history too. Very interesting! To give you a little background, this historical Chinatown was established in 1594 by Chinese traders back in the old days of the Philippines. And knowing that Chinese Mandarin is still being spoken well by the Filipino-Chinese residents of Binondo today amazes me.

Salazar Bakery

binondo food trip best

Coming from Lucky Chinatown Mall where we parked, our first stop was Salazar Bakery in Ongpin Street. First opened in 1947, this bakery is still a busy shop today. For starters, we had Hopia and Tikoy . But what aroused my palates was the Tikoy with Peanuts . I swear I thought it was weird at first but it got interestingly weird. And maybe interestingly good. I hella love the taste of Sago’t Gulaman and this tikoy is so insane it’s almost the same! Compliments well with the salty dry peanut filling. Love at first bite.

 Shanghai Fried Siopao

binondo food trip best

On the other side of Ongpin Street is Shanghai Fried Siopao . This street siopao only cost P22 and for chrissakes, my friends and I agreed to share two siopaos for all of us. The reason was to save our tummies and avoid being fully loaded as much as possible but maaan, the taste is hella good! Such a breath of fresh air from the processed ones we are having just because it is convenient. I mean, this one is fucking authentic I guess? So all in all, Shanghai Fried Siopao is my best-spent P22 and I am highly recommending it to you . And not having a whole Siopao is questioning what the hell is wrong.

New Quan Yin Chay Vegetarian Food House

binondo food trip best

Okay so this is the kind of menu that my fit fam would love. They cater to a wide variety of yummy food so we asked what’s their best seller and they gladly suggest the Seafood Soup . The big bowl of soup costs P150 and it’s very sulit . And for a vegetarian meal, I’d say it was tasty not to mention there’s a lot going on inside that bowl. Perhaps one of the best healthy eats in Binondo, for sure.

Café Mezzanine

binondo food trip best

Located on the 2nd floor in the heart of Chinatown, Café Mezzanine is a fusion of Filipino and Chinese Food. We ordered Lechon Kawali (P135), Kiampong (P70), and Xiaolongbao  (P180). Fucking tasty! I swear I loved it very much.

Lechon Kawali is always a stunner but that one is a jaw-dropper. Like seriously? How can good food be 10x better?

Their Kiampong is hardcore tasty as well. I could eat that alone without anything.

And the xiaolongbao? What the hell is xiaolongbao anyway? I never had it before. But I knew it was great! I like how it gives your mouth bursting flavors of sweet to savory. And a lot of joy too.

Dong Bei Dumplings

binondo food trip best

The famous hole in the wall authentic dumpling house in Yuchengco Street, Binondo. This tiny food house can be jam-packed, waited in line for minutes but they make your dumplings in front of you, so I think that was entertaining.

Okay. Can I just say that the dumplings were phenomenal? P200 for 14pcs. I personally think there is really no wow factor in this place but I like the fact that they are practicing the tradition of making dumplings every day. Fresh ingredients, made daily. Or maybe I still haven’t discovered the wow factor? But please, go to this place. You’ll love it there.

Eng Bee Tin

binondo food trip best

Another famous Chinese deli chain in Ongpin Street is Eng Bee Tin . Who doesn’t know Eng Bee Tin?! I personally love this because I grew up loving its best selling hopia! Their 3-story store is super awesome too. 1st floor is a grocery, the 2nd floor is the restaurant, and the 3rd floor is a freaking museum! Holy WOW. But unfortunately, the museum was under construction and was closed to the public. Which was pretty sad. Anyway, this store has a lot to offer. Name it, and they have it. Quality restaurant and well, hard to leave without a takeaway ube hopia!

binondo food trip best

Walking through Nueva Street in Binondo, you’ll see Holland . It wasn’t really that much not until the Chocnut drink mix  (P100) and Chocnut spread (P80). I mean, what kind of fresh heaven is this? I am biased in loving chocnut. Aren’t we all? We reached this mini grocery store at around 6:30 pm already and that only means missing Cuapao (pork buns)  Fucked, because I heard a lot of good reviews about it!

Sincerity Café and Restaurant

binondo food trip best

So we went on the other side of Yuchengco Street. And honestly, though I was totally looking forward to going to Sincerity Café and Restaurant only for one thing: Freaking frog legs . But a boy could only be so unlucky. We missed it for the universe. So we ended up ordering their famous claim to fame  fried chicken  (half for P160) and kikiam (forgot the price lol sorry) .

Their fried chicken is, well, fucking fantastic. It is to die for! Super far from the western style good ‘ol f. chicken. The chicken itself, from the outer crispy skin down to the bones, it has a mild sweetness, a balanced mix of spices and a hella homey taste.

Oh, kikiam . This one’s quite authentic, wrapped in actual bean curd skin. I can say that it’s the best tasting kikiam I had. And the sauce, man. Freaking adorable.

La Zhou La Mien

Since this is our 9th stop, let me fucking vomit first. Just kidding ! Hahaha I was so full already. But the heaviest meal comes at the end because life is full of unfair surprises. Me and my friends agreed to share a big plate of beef knife mien  for P260. And even if I feel very full, I still find it appetizing which for me was something new. I mean just looking at the photo itself.

Sooooo after 4 hours of binge eating, we walked back to Lucky Chinatown Mall, had some Thai milk tea, drove to the world trade center for Big Bad Wolf (I happen to buy 5 exciting books!) drove back to Quezon City to drink beers until 5 in the morning. Ahhhh lupet!

Bucket list for the next Binondo food trip:

  • Fried frog legs (Sincerity Restaurant)
  • Po Heng Lumpia House
  • Masuki Mami House
  • Kim Hiong Food Garden
  • James Grocery Carvajal
  • Peking duck from Wai Ying Fast Food
  • ASADO ROLL 🙁

Kean – Shanghai Fried Siopao, Dong Bei Dumpling, Kikiam (Serenity Restaurant)

Jeremiah – Dong Bei Dumpling, Knife Mien, Shanghai Fried Siopao

CONCLUSION:

  • For fuck’s sake, think before bringing a car. Parking was hella shitty. Or better yet, come early.
  • If you think it’s good, eat it and enjoy it. Do not hesitate! Or you’ll regret the hell out of it.
  • Start the food crawl early. Some restaurants are only open until late afternoon.
  • Bring a water bottle. Trust me, it saves a lot.
  • I should learn more about how to take good food photos.
  • Good food is always better and cheaper when shared! We only spent not more than P500 each for all the food we ate.

Binondo’s Best: How Chinatown Is Food-Crawling Its Way Back Into The Zeitgeist

By Celine Lagundi

In Ongpin Street, Binondo, a serpentine line of people extends deep into an alley beside a fried siopao shop. A group of young adults, victorious and beaming, have finally reached the end of the queue. They assemble themselves into a circle and hold out their fried siopaos — palm-shaped, meat-filled soft buns fried at the bottom, each of them using their smartphones to take a picture.

The fried siopao has become quite popular online, but it isn’t the only street food offering that has transformed Chinatown into a viral online sensation. Mere days away from the celebration of the Chinese Lunar New Year, crowds occupy the notoriously narrow streets of Binondo, queuing for an assortment of skewers, sugarcane juice, and the Chinese candied fruit snack tanghulu.

On the video sharing app Tiktok, various users and content creators offer an assortment of “Binondo food crawl guides” for every budget and taste preference. The group of coworkers at the fried siopao shop admitted that their exposure to Tiktok led to their mid-afternoon food crawl, but added that they had only watched the videos for inspiration and chose to explore the gastronomical offerings of Chinatown on their own. When asked what their itinerary for the day was, one of them simply said: “We go wherever the long lines are.”

Where to get your fried siopao: Shanghai Fried Siopao (828 Ongpin St., Santa Cruz, Binondo, Manila)

What about the food in Binondo makes a person endure an absurdly long queue in the scorching Manila heat? According to a customer, people endure the challenge because the authentic taste of the food cannot be replicated anywhere else. Despite the prevalence of “Binondo-style” food places in outlet malls around Metro Manila, customers flock to Binondo for the distinct flavor which could only be accomplished with recipes that have been cultivated and perfected for decades.

Binondo is a haven for comfort food lovers. Crowds form in and around Wai Ying, which boasts mouthwatering dim sum and filling congee. Sincerity Cafe and Restaurant is an institution of its own, serving Chinese-style fried chicken since the 1950s. For those seeking vegan and vegetarian options, Vege Select (formerly Quan Yin Chay) offer a variety of vegetable-centric dishes, served in a cool atmosphere perfect for brunch and light meals throughout the day.

A standout authentic Chinese food place is located on the outskirts of Chinatown, called Ang Tunay Beef House. Resembling an old cafeteria, their specialty Beef Mami is a hearty beef broth that matches very well with their Kiampong, a traditional Chinese glutinous rice dish. Dining at the food place is a great way to decompress after a long day at work, as they also serve a variety of cold beverages such as sodas and beer.

For those seeking food adventures, Binondo is also the place to be. Located near the literal estero , by the creek along Ongpin Street, Estero Fastfood’s specialty is their frog legs, cooked different ways. Depending on the customers’ fancy, this Binondo food trip staple can be served fried, adobo -style with soy sauce, or buttered with garlic. But the food place doesn’t only serve amphibious delicacies; customers keep coming back for their Filipino-Chinese dishes as well, such as their pancit guisado and chop suey .

For hundreds of years, Binondo has sustained its original function: to be a vibrant hub for traders and merchants of various products and services. Its rich history as the oldest Chinatown in the world is one that deserves to be emphasized, and with the continuously growing scene in Binondo fueled by love from its local patrons and its newfound audience on social media, the “Binondo Food Crawl” phenomenon serves a greater significance as a conduit for heritage preservation.

Although there are dangers and challenges associated with the preservation of history, the larger cultural conversation that Binondo inhabits does not seem to wane anytime soon. For as long as there are people willing to wait in line, the streets of Binondo continue to thrive.

Top 6 Street Foods to Eat in Binondo Chinatown, Manila

binondo food trip best

If you’re looking to try some of the best street foods to eat in Manila, then Binondo Chinatown is where you want to be. Founded in 1594 (yes you read that right), Binondo is the oldest Chinatown in the world! This list of the top 6 street foods to eat in Binondo Chinatown will get you well on your way to planning your very own food tour.

This lively and historic district was set up across the river from Intramuros district back in the 16 th century, where all the wealthy colonial Spaniards resided at the time. This permanent settlement for the Chinese immigrants flourished, causing it to become the centre of commerce and trade in Manila by the 20 th century.

Chinatowns are known for being a hot spot of culture, commerce, and most especially food! Many things have changed over the years in here in Binondo. One thing that’s remained is that the locals know how to do street food right.

Enough chit chat! Ready to plan your own historic street food adventure through the oldest Chinatown in the world? Here’s your top 6 street foods to eat in Binondo Chinatown, Manila.

Fried Siopao

Ripped open fried siopao full of pork top street food in Binondo

Siopao are a popular Chinese-influenced Filipino steamed bun, and the ones at Shanghai Fried Siopao in Binondo are worth the trip alone. The slightly sweet, fluffy buns are packed to the brim, full of tender ground pork, onion and chives. Once steamed, the cooked meat and veggies create an incredibly juicy bao .

What makes the ones here at Shanghai Fried Siopao extra tasty and unique is that they’re steamed in oil. They end up coming out slightly fried and crispy on the bottom, while still pillowy, soft and extremely juicy throughout.

Quite different from your typical steamed bun, we had to try two just to be sure of how good they were.

Made and cooked in their small shop right along the busy Ongpin Street, these fried siopao have been a staple of Chinatown for many years. The siopao are bought up as soon as they come out of the steamer, satisfying the line-up of hungry customers. So, whenever you stop by, you’re guaranteed to get one that’s piping hot and fresh.

Kuchay Ah Pie

Kuchay ah pie cut open, food to eat in Binondo

Next up on the list is kuchay ah pie, a fried pastry that looks similar to an empanada. They get their name from the prominent flavour of chives, which is kuchay in Filipino.

These little meat pies are made of a flaky pastry that’s so rich it’s almost buttery, and because they’re fried and not baked, they’re extra crispy. The pie is stuffed full of pork, tofu, chives, turnips and carrots, married in a savoury yet slightly sweet gravy.

We couldn’t believe how heavy and packed full they were. So much so they resembled more of a ball than a pie!

The best place to try these is at Quik Snack. They do a number of different Chinese-Filipino dishes here, but they’re especially known for their pies, with the kuchay ah being their number one.

Pork and Chive Dumplings

Pork and chive filled insides of dumplings in box top street food in Binondo

An absolute must eat street food in Binondo Chinatown is the pork and chive dumplings at Dong Bei Dumpling .

Thin dumpling skin is loaded with a mixture of pork , onions and plenty of chives. Immediately after being made by hand, they’re boiled until they float. The dumplings come out so full of flavour and juicy, they literally melt in your mouth. So much so they boarder on soup dumplings!

They’re served with a special homemade garlic-vinegar-soy sauce mixture, with a spicy chilli sauce on the side for an added kick. This is some spicy sauce, so if you like your tongue on fire, we highly recommend it.

What sets Dong Bei apart is that the dumplings here are made fresh to order with quality ingredients. You won’t find anything frozen around here, and as far as we’re concerned, it really doesn’t get any better than that.

Hand Pulled Noodles

Top street food Binondo bowl of beef noodles

This delicious looking bowl of fresh hand pulled noodles can be found at a fantastic place just on the outskirts of Binondo. At Lan Zhou La Mian, they pull their noodles fresh to order, right at the front of the shop so you can see the chefs in action as they prepare your meal.

We don’t know about you, but hand pulled noodles always hit that little bit different for us. Dunked in boiling hot water, they only take 15 seconds to cook. The freshness can be tasted in the texture of the noodles, which are just that bit firmer and chewier than others.

There’s a number of different noodle soups to choose from, but we recommend the beef lamien. Full of tender beef, bok choy, scallions and carrots in a hearty, beefy broth, you won’t believe how generous they are with the noodles!

Each table is ready to go with a massive bowl of scallions and sauces for you to add, dependant on your tastes.

Ube hopia sitting on table

These little pucks are hopia , one of the most popular pastries found throughout Binondo.

This traditional pastry is full of thick mung bean paste inside a thin pastry shell. The soft textured pastry can be flavoured with a number of different tastes, but the local favourite is ube , purple yam.

Eng Bee Tin opened up in 1912 and were the first to introduce ube jam into the traditional hopia in the 1980’s, as a way to revitalise a once dying business. The vibrant purple colour stood out amongst all the others, bringing them to fame in no time. Now with multiple stores throughout Binondo, tasting their hopia and Chinese-Filipino pastries is a must.

We decided to the best way to taste hopia was to go for both the original and ube .

The ube has a distinct sweet jam taste to it that’s perfect if you have a sweet tooth. If you’re not a massive sweet fan, then go for the original. Nice and pasty, these taste more like a sweet white bean than anything else. The hopia come in packs of four, which is a pretty good deal for what you pay for.

Many shops around Binondo sell hopia , so have a wander around if you want to taste the different ones of this historic Chinatown.

When exploring Binondo in Manila, you’ll definitely need to cool down at some point, trust us!

We love a good bubble tea, and luckily right next door to Eng Bee Tin (the flagship location) is where you can find the best ube bubble milk tea.

With a taste similar to taro, their ube milk tea is creamy, cold and mildly sweet with a strong ube flavour that’s oh so refreshing. Not to mention the tapioca pearls are fresh, chewy and delicious. You’re gonna find it hard to resist anything ube flavoured from now on! It’s definitely become our new go-to favourite.

LIST: Binondo places to have a barkada food trip or 'hindi parang, parang date' like SnoRene in 'Can't Buy Me Love'

Binondo , the oldest Chinatown in the world, is a culinary haven. It has several food stalls, markets, and restaurants boasting of authentic Chinese cuisine with Filipino flavors.

One of them gained attention anew recently, thanks to Maris Racal and Anthony Jennings , whose characters Irene and Snoop (SnoRene) in the hit ABS-CBN series Can’t Buy Me Love had a kilig-filled "hindi na parang, parang date."

They filmed it at the Masuki Restaurant , the iconic mami house along Benavides Street that has been in service since 1930. It goes without saying that the go-to orders here include chicken/beef/wonton mami and asado/bola-bola siopao. The savory food is complemented by a cold bottle of soft drinks, if not a glass of water.

The two recreated the scene during the launch of Coca-Cola's "Foodmarks" in the Philippines, which is putting the spotlight on Binondo through its campaign that champions the culture and history of a place based on its food offerings.

Aside from Masuki Restaurant, there are other food establishments that have served various patrons in the district, collecting unassuming and heartwarming stories that come with the food items they have been offering for years. Here are some of those that are perfect for barkada food trips and romantic dates.

Sincerity Cafe and Restaurant

Sincerity Cafe and Restaurant is known for its savory, juicy, and crispy fried chicken, which has been a favorite since 1956. Its other bestsellers include fried oyster cake, eight treasures machang, chicharo shrimp, barbecue asado, and kiampong special rice.

Sincerity Cafe and Restaurant is located along Reina Regente Street in Binondo, Manila.

Four Season Noodle House

Four Season Noodle House is known for its “turo-turo” style of service, where customers would point at an offering they like as if it were a carinderia. The food changes on a daily basis depending on the fresh catch of meat, seafood, and vegetables from the market.

As its name suggests, it also has special noodle soups and other mouthwatering dishes like exotic turtle, congee, dimsum, and xiao long bao.

Four Season Noodle House is located at 484 San Fernando Street, Binondo, Manila.

Golden Fortune Seafood Restaurant

Established in 2008, Golden Fortune Seafood Restaurant serves live seafood from its indoor aquarium, assuring quality and freshness. Meats include sharksfin, abalone, sea cucumber, scallop, fish, shrimp, pork, beef, chicken, lamb, pigeon, frog, and ostrich.

The food spot also offers Asian cuisine and has an a la carte menu with shabu shabu, dimsum, congee, noodles, and desserts.

Golden Fortune Seafood Restaurant is located at 1283 Soler Street, Sta. Cruz South, Manila.

Golden Lantern

Golden Lantern has an array of rice dishes, with viands like salt and pepper shrimp, beef brisket, sweet and sour pork, mushroom chicken, stir-fried pork intestine, and mapo tofu. It also has a lineup of cold dishes including emperor crab, money eel, papaya snail, and dogfish.

The usual soups, noodles, vegetables, dumplings, braised meats, and fried rice are also up for grabs.

Golden Lantern is located at 824 Liberty Street, Sta. Cruz South, Manila.

Big Bowl Noodles

Big Bowl Noodles offers different kinds of noodles—from wonton noodle soup and beef brisket noodle soup to sliced beef fried noodles and chopsuey fried noodles. It also offers pork, chicken, seafood, dimsum, and soup dishes.

The restaurant has five kinds of rice, including sliced beef rice, ampalaya rice, beef brisket rice, beef curry rice, and beef tomato rice.

Big Bowl Noodles is located at 517 Yuchengco Street, Binondo, Manila.

What Are the Best Wooden Salad Bowls?

Portrait of Lauren Ro

A wooden salad bowl, because of its heirloom quality and high price tag, can feel aspirational, like something you’d put on a wedding registry. But you don’t have to wait for a momentous life event to purchase one. If you know where and what to look for, you can find a beautiful bowl in a range of sizes and wood types for every budget. To bring you the best wooden salad bowls out there, I reached out to chefs, cookbook authors, restaurant critics, and other food writers to ask about the ones they swear by — and in many cases, give as gifts.

As far as what you should consider when choosing a wooden salad bowl, the type of wood matters. A hardwood like cherry or walnut, which, according to a sales associate I spoke to at Andrew Pearce , a Vermont-based company whose bowls are a favorite among the experts I consulted for this story, holds up well over time and has less pitch (aka resin) than other varieties of wood. Wooden bowls may require a little more maintenance than those made of ceramic or stainless steel, but as long as you hand wash and dry them immediately after use and occasionally oil the wood to keep it from cracking, they are easy to incorporate into your daily dining ritual and will remain beautiful over the years. Below, nine of the best wooden salad bowls, according to folks who make a lot of salads.

Wooden salad bowls $110 and under

Crate & Barrel Tondo Acacia 14” Bowl

Several cookbook authors I spoke to swear by this acacia bowl from Crate and Barrel. Andrea Nguyen , author of several cookbooks on Vietnamese cuisine including her most recent, Ever-Green Vietnamese ; Monique Volz , founder of website Ambitious Kitchen and author of forthcoming cookbook The Ambitious Kitchen Cookbook ; and Dan Pelosi, aka GrossyPelosi and author of Let’s Eat ; all love how the wood looks. Nguyen calls out the “stunning acacia grain” and how “handsome and organic looking” it is, while Volz says she was taken by how “gorgeous” it is. Pelosi particularly loves its large size (he has the 14-inch bowl) “and the way its rounded sides appear to be literally hugging the contents of the bowl.” In terms of maintenance, Nguyen, who uses the 10.5-inch size for serving salads and “the occasional wet item like a curry or stew,” likes that it’s lightweight and easy to care for: she washes it right after the meal and refreshes the bowl with wood conditioner when she oils her cutting boards.

Dansk Wood Classics Acacia Tulia Salad Bowl

A couple of the experts I reached out to for this story turn to vintage and secondhand sources for their wooden salad bowls. Food writer Colu Henry found the “love of my life Dansk salad bowl” at an estate sale in Hudson about ten years ago and has been using it ever since. (It’s even featured on the back cover of her most recent cookbook, Colu Cooks: Easy Fancy Food .) “They have been making them since the 1960s, and I love that it leans retro and by nature has a sculptural vibe,” she says. She likes it so much that she displays it on her bookcase when it’s not in use. While hers is vintage, Dansk still manufactures similar styles, like this tulip-shaped one made from acacia.

KimVintiques Gorgeous Vintage Footed Wood Salad Bowl 12.5” w/ Serving Utensils

Greta Caruso, co-author of the newsletter The Green Spoon , calls herself “a zealous vintage kitchen-ware shopper on Etsy,” where she has found many of her favorite salad bowls over the years. She is particularly drawn to one-of-a-kind bowls like this one that has a 12.5-inch diameter and three round balls for feet. (Here are two others she’s bookmarked.) It comes with matching serving utensils, too, making the bowl a great value. When shopping for vintage pieces, Caruso recommends reading the product description carefully to make sure the bowl is food safe and the appropriate size, “not 1-inch wide and intended for a dollhouse, but that’s part of the thrill of online vintage shopping,” she says.

Stinson Studios Round Ambrosia Maple Bowl

This salad bowl from Ontario-based Stinson Studios is hand-turned from ambrosia maple, a type of wood that gets its name — and distinct coloring and patterns — from fungus left from an infestation of the ambrosia beetle. It’s the bowl that New York Magazine’s chief restaurant critic Matthew Schneier has at home. When it’s not being used for salad, it acts as a vessel for onions and shallots, and, according to Schneier, has held up well over the years with minimal effort.

Wooden salad bowls $250 and up

Andrew Pearce Medium Live Edge (Oval) Wooden Bowl

Hannah Goldfield , New Yorker restaurant critic and food writer, and Trinity Mouzon Wofford, founder of wellness brand Golde , both swear by the bowls from Hartland, Vermont–based maker Andrew Pearce, where each piece is hand-turned from a single piece of wood, either cherry or walnut. (You can actually watch the craftspeople make the bowls when you visit the flagship store.) “We received this bowl as a wedding present a couple of years ago and it’s really special,” says Mouzon Wofford. The oblong bowl has a live edge , which gives it a natural, rustic look. “It’s a splurge, but I love having small art pieces in my life that get used and worn in,” she says.

Andrew Pearce X-Large Champlain (Classic) Wooden Bowl - Cherry

Goldfield has a sizable collection of wooden salad bowls from Andrew Pearce and other makers in Vermont, where her mother’s family lives. Her favorite is the classic Champlain bowl in one of the largest sizes, which she has in cherry. “I love how enormous it is, which is essential for a dinner party,” she says. “It’s dramatic, beautiful, and practical, too. It leaves you so much room for tossing, which I’m very particular about with salads — you need enough volume to properly toss or otherwise you have vegetables flying everywhere and can’t achieve proper dressing distribution.” In terms of maintenance, Goldfield says they hold up well, and all she does is wash and dry them. (The manufacturer recommends using its refined walnut oil for regular upkeep, but Goldfield says she’s only used it about once or so.)

Andrew Pearce Seconds Large Champlain (Classic) Bowl

The hand-turned bowls can get expensive as they increase in size, but buying seconds, or bowls that have slight flaws like knots, repaired cracks, or kiln markings, is a good way to save a little money — 20 percent, to be exact. Seconds can also have more personality. “Whenever I’m in town and in need of a wedding gift, I make a point of stopping and spending an hour sorting through the seconds,” says Goldfield. “I look for the ones with the most beautiful coloring and ‘imperfections.’” This “seconds” large-size Champlain bowl costs $320 compared to $400 for a regular one.

Permanent Collection Alice's Salad Bowl

Here’s another recommendation from Caruso “if you’re feeling splurge-y and not vintage-y.” The 13.25-inch hand-turned bowl is from Permanent Collection, a design company founded by her Green Spoon co-author Fanny Singer, and is made from salvaged redwood by Oakland, California-based studio Joinery Structures. The bowl is part of Alice’s Kitchen collection, and 5 percent of every purchase from the collection is donated to the Edible Schoolyard Project , a nonprofit founded by Alice Waters.

Extra Large Turned Teak Wood Salad Bowl on Tripod Stand

Julia Sherman, author of cookbook Salad for President , found a wooden salad bowl with a stand meant for table-side service at a thrift store. In terms of the shape of the bowl, Sherman prefers “an open, shallow, wide bowl for serving salad, over a deep shape that hides all the parts of your creation,” she says. But a salad bowl of this sort can take up too much real estate on the table, which is why she appreciates the stand. Sherman says this 20-inch bowl made from teak is similar to the one she has, but that you can find other, more affordable ones on eBay as well, like this one that comes with six individual bowls and this one that has a 34-inch-tall stand .
