During the colonial era, Da Lat (Đà Lạt), also Dalat , in the South Central Highlands of Vietnam , was the playground of the French, who built villas in the clear mountain air to escape the heat and humidity of the plains and coastal areas.

Understand [ edit ]

Dalat looks somewhat like a cross between Vietnam and rural France. Many of its hotels and houses are built in a European/French style. The city spreads across a series of pine-covered hills, with a small lake in the centre and surrounded by a man-made lake and higher peaks, making for some lovely scenery quite different from the rest of Vietnam. Temperatures are pleasantly warm by day, and cool at night, down to perhaps 10°C.

Dalat is surrounded by some of the best mountain biking, hiking and canyoning opportunities in Vietnam, with hills of coffee and tea plantations, which evoke images of the colonial hill stations of the north of India.

Dalat's high altitude (1,500–2,000 m) and fertile landscape make it one of Vietnam's premier agricultural areas, producing varieties of fruits, vegetables, tea, coffee, and flowers that don't grow in the lowlands. In markets as far north as Hanoi and Haiphong, vegetable and flower vendors will tout their "grown in Dalat" produce.

Dalat is a favorite destination for company-sponsored weekend outings, family getaways, and honeymooners.

Some hotels offer special arrangements with taxi companies to ferry hotel guests to and from the airport for around 200,000 dong. Hotels can try to rip you off by asking for anything between 300,000 to 400,000 dong for an airport transfer. Be adamant on 200,000 dong. Taxi service with ☏ +84 6 3383 5583 have a fixed price of 250,000 dong. Malinh taxi charges 300,000 dong to the airport. If going by meter, it comes to around 577,000 dong (distance around 35 km).

Or catch the airport shuttle for 60,000 dong per person (Aug 2022). They will ask what hotel you're staying in, and the airport shuttle bus will take you there. You can get the shuttle back to the airport at the Intercity Bus Station (Bến xe Liên tỉnh), also for 60,000 dong, last bus at 7 pm (Aug 2022).

By bus [ edit ]

Most local and foreign travelers arrive in Dalat by bus, including those traveling on the famous Sinh Cafe Hanoi-HCMC open-tour buses.

Phuong Trang Busline runs several daily services to Dalat from Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City . From Nha Trang the bus ride is about 5 hours, with the obligatory stop at a dilapidated Cham temple/tourist site. From Nha Trang, the travel time to 3–4 hours, including a 30-minute breakfast/WC stop about one hour out of Nha Trang. From Ho Chi Minh City the bus ride is about 7 hours (9 hours if there is bad traffic leaving Saigon). If coming from Mui Ne , be careful as the road is rough most of the way, so try to book a large bus or at least a seat towards the front.

From Mui Ne : An Phu Travel . 07:30, afternoon . 2 buses a day. It's not too comfortable seater bus but still ok. Tickets can be booked in most hotels and guest houses. They have free pick up. Journey takes 4-5 hours and includes some great views. Drop off in Dalat: Nguyen Chi Thanh street, close to the city center. USD5 . ( updated Mar 2018 ) . The Sinh Tourist . The bus tickets are available online on baolau ( updated Mar 2018 ) .

From Danang - Danang Central Bus Station, sleeper bus from Danang to Dalat with air-cond, toilet on bus, departs from Danang at 17:00 and arrives Dalat at 08:00 - 09:00 (15 hours), it costs 265,000 dong/ticket, you may come directly to the Bus Station or online booking via email [email protected].

For foreign visitors, it may be best to book a ticket on a bus without a television. The entertainment offered could be loud and unappealing if you prefer sleeping before arriving at their next destination.

Alternatively, catch a local bus at Ho Chi Minh City , Bien Hoa , Phan Rang , Nha Trang or Buon Ma Thuot .

By motorbike [ edit ]

Motorbikes are also a good choice for adventurous travelers who like to travel in an experiential style and save money. From Saigon to Da Lat is about 300 km, it takes about 7 – 10 hours if traveling by motorbike. Although it takes quite a long time, these will be quite interesting experiences, as well as help you discover many beautiful scenes along the way. A legit motorbike driving license is required to rent a motorbike in Vietnam.

Get around [ edit ]

Depending on where you stay, you can walk to most parts around town. You can catch a xe om (motorbike taxi) from most corners, so if you're going somewhere farther out of town, you have a fast way to get there. You can also book via app using Grab Bike. Taxi cars are also abundant and reasonable in price, yet watch the meter, as meter fixing is a common practice from north to south. As of July 2018, meter-fixing is a much diminished problem and almost all taxi meters click into life after the vehicle has traveled a few metres. The occasional taxi may take you on a circuitous route to get to your destination but opening Google maps and pointing out that you know the way reduces incidents of this kind. Taxis are cheap and an ideal way to get round Dalat.

There is a local bus which passes near most of the main tourist sites. Heading south you can catch it at the bus shelter by the lake. Otherwise, the bus hub can be found on Hoa Binh Square (Khu Hoa Binh - behind Hoa Binh theater), just up from the market. The last bus each day is at 17:30.

There are many places around town to rent a bicycle, tandem, or motorbike. Please consider carefully before you rent a motorbike, as according to the Vietnamese law you must be in the possession of a valid Vietnamese driver's licence to be able to drive a motor vehicle in the country. Failure to have one cancels any insurance that the bike might come with and makes you liable for any damages. In Southeast Asia, you are always liable, as you are always guilty, as you are presumed to have more money than the other party. Hence you will have to pay for damages to the bike and its full value, damages to other people and their property, as well as ruining your holiday. Need a private car, contact mrlee from Mimosatravel, excellent English guide and driver

Now, Xuan Huong Lake is one of the main draws of Da Lat, and you can see honeymooners and locals strolling its banks. Many nice hotels have a view of the lake. The lake was drained in 2010, but is now filled again. Boats can be rented on both sides of the lake. The lake is adorned with a blindingly bright advertising sign, aimed directly at the lakeside hotels and coffee shops.

Most visitors to Dalat are Vietnamese, and most of them leave loaded with stuff. What they like to take home is dried and candied fruits, strawberry preserves, coffee, green and artichoke tea, local wine, dried venison, orchids, strawberries, avocados, and other fresh produce. If you take any sort of organized tour, chances are you will be off-loaded for a half hour at a shop selling these items. Local treats are also for sale in abundance in the large central market in the area around Nguyen Thi Minh Khai and Le Dai Hanh. Partly covered and partly outdoors, the market has dozens of small stalls selling fruits and vegetables, clothing, and a variety of other goods. There is a supermarket on the top floor selling necessities for travellers. Strolling around the market is a favourite evening activity, and every night it buzzes with thousands of visitors.

Dalat does not offer lot of high-end handicrafts of the sort favoured by overseas tourists. Dalat is famous, however, for its beautifully crafted silk embroidered pictures, which can be purchased at a massive mark up from the many galleries around Dalat or at a fraction of the price from the central Dalat market.

Dalat also has an abundance of fruit, vegetables, and flowers available for purchase if you plan to stay for a few days and want to liven up your hotel room or cook your own meals.

Dalat weather

Sited at an altitude of 1,500 meters, with Langbiang peak at 2,167 meters above sea level as the highest point, Dalat is surrounded by magnificent mountain ranges and high plains, contributing to its cool and pleasant weather year-round. The temperature difference between days and nights in Dalat is relatively large, with an average of 11 °C. The highest temperature reported is around 30 °C, and the lowest is under 5 °C.

The four seasons in Dalat are not evenly divided. Mid-year is often affected by tropical depressions and seasonal winds from the Southwest and Central, resulting in prolonged periods of rain. However, every month, every season in Dalat has its own appeal. Below is a descriptive timeline of Dalat weather to help you choose the best time to visit based on your preference.

Spring (January – March)

The average temperature during this season is about 19 °C, with temperatures ranging from 14 to 28 °C. This is also the dry season in Dalat, with long hours of sunshine and low humidity, making it the ideal time to visit. The pleasant weather allows for more daylight for outdoor activities, resulting in many local festivals taking place to celebrate the beauty of floral blossoms and traditional holidays.

Due to the favorable weather and diverse festive activities, this is also the peak season for local Vietnamese people to travel to Dalat. Traffic may be more crowded than usual, and accommodation options may be limited due to high demand.

Summer (April – September)

Summer in Dalat lasts longer and is characterized by long rainy days and high humidity. During the day, the temperature is nice and warm, but it drops quickly at night, creating a large temperature difference. The temperature revolves around 27 °C in April and May, and then typically drops to around 23 °C from June to September. It rains almost every day during this season in Dalat, with the heaviest rain usually falling in the afternoons. You can still fit many activities into your itinerary by planning ahead and doing more outdoor activities in the morning, followed by spending the afternoons and evenings in cozy, vintage cafes or restaurants, watching the mountainous town covered in a curtain of rain.

Autumn (October – November)

Although October and November are considered autumn in Dalat, the weather does not greatly vary from summer, except for lower humidity during daytime. The number of rainy days per month also decreases, giving more hours of sunlight for exploration.

Winter (December)

The average temperature in December is 18 °C with an average daylight of 11 hours. This is also when some of the most iconic flowers of Dalat bloom, creating a picturesque and colorful background. So, if you enjoy natural landscape photography, this is a great time for it. Additionally, Dalat, with its orange light illuminating the white barns at night, the chalets nestled on the hillsides, and the winter breeze, makes for a lovely Christmas holiday.

Overall, there is always a reason to visit Dalat regardless of the season. While Dalat is a festival destination during the dry season, such as spring and winter, it is a perfect getaway even during the rainy seasons of summer and autumn when other Northern and Southern cities are unbearably hot. Due to its natural attractions, it is not surprising that Dalat can be overcrowded during weekends, which is the high season for this foggy city. Therefore, if you are looking for favorable weather to visit Dalat, December to March are recommended months. However, if you want to experience local and less touristy experiences, weekdays in any season would work.

Dalat boasts enchanting landscapes and favorable weather conditions year-round, making it a premier holiday destination in the South.

How to get to Dalat?

Being a strategic holiday destination, Dalat has witnessed impressive development in transportation and infrastructure, making it super accessible for travelers. There are two common and convenient ways to travel to Dalat from major cities in the North, the Central, and the South.

Lien Khuong International Airport operates both domestically and internationally direct flights to Dalat. Inbound flights to Dalat depart from cities such as Hanoi , Ho Chi Minh City , Da Nang , Hai Phong, Vinh, Thanh Hoa, Quy Nhon , Can Tho, and Phu Quoc . Meanwhile, at the moment, some outbound flights depart to Dalat from Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur), Korea (Seoul, Muan, and Daegu), Thailand (Bangkok), and China (Lanzhou).

Flights are operated by various aviation companies ranging from economic airlines to national and more premium ones. The cost of a one-way trip from Ho Chi Minh City ranges from around 500,000 VND to 2,000,000 VND ($21 to $85), with higher prices from other northern cities. However, you can get good deals if you book in advance.

Lien Khuong International Airport is 30 kilometers from the city center. As soon as you arrive at the airport, there are two options to get you to Dalat center:

  • Airport taxis: Bookable at the airport, with fares ranging from 250,000 VND to 300,000 VND ($11 to $13) and a travel time of 30 to 40 minutes without traffic. This fare includes tolls and airport fees and will take you directly to your desired location.
  • Airport buses: Station is located outside the arrival terminal and staffed with personnel to assist with bus booking. Tickets cost 40,000 VND ($1.7), and each ride takes at least 45 minutes to reach the city center without traffic. Buses operate from 6 AM to 6 PM and depart from the airport every 15 to 30 minutes. However, keep in mind two disadvantages: (1) The schedule is often based on the arrival of flights, so you may need to wait for the next flight if you don’t go directly to the bus station upon arrival. (2) Buses only run between the airport and Dalat Central Market (at 01 Le Thi Hong Gam St), so you’ll need to arrange additional transportation to your final destination.”

If you are based in Ho Chi Minh City or other Southern cities, taking a night bus will be another reasonable option due to more flexible schedules and economical prices. There are many local buses operating the Dalat route; however, Thanh Buoi Bus and Phuong Trang (Futa) Bus are preferred for their quality and professionalism.

In general, the prices for different bus companies and seat types are comparable. However, for a more comfortable and restful journey, it is recommended to opt for a premium or VIP bus option. This will ensure that you are well-rested and ready to explore upon arrival in Dalat in the morning.

1. Thanh Buoi Bus

Thanh Buoi Bus Company operates two routes to Dalat, including Can Tho – Dalat and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) – Dalat. An advantage of choosing Thanh Buoi is its variety of seat options.

  • Standard sleeper buses: a bed/seat in a 44-seat bus. Price: 270,000 VND ($11) from Ho Chi Minh City and 400.000 VND ($17) from Can Tho. These buses are relatively old with narrow beds (which you can hardly straighten your legs on) and no curtain to give you a sense of privacy. Most of the time, the standard buses would depart late because they had to wait for the passengers to fill the seats. In short, this should only be an option for its low price and when there is no other option of transport.
  • VIP sleeper buses: a bed/seat in a 22-seat bus. Price: 420,000 VND ($18) from Ho Chi Minh City. These are the most premium, operated with new and clean buses. What you have is pretty much a capsule room with comfortable beds, curtains to separate your space from others, wifi, and a TV screen for entertainment.
  • Limousine buses: a seat in a 26-seat bus. Price: 310.000 VND ($13). This bus leaves only once a day at 11 PM from Ho Chi Minh City. These are newly introduced by the bus company, targeting those who are uncomfortable with no upstairs seats. They are featured by one-level spacious beds, which you will feel more stable sitting and sleeping on.

2. Phuong Trang (Futa) Bus

Phuong Trang (Futa) Bus Company only operates standard sleeper buses, which can be quite narrow and lack privacy curtains. As one of the first bus companies to offer long-distance trips, the buses used are relatively older. The cost for a standard sleeper bus is 300,000 VND ($12.5).

A benefit of choosing Phuong Trang Bus is its multiple destinations, including Da Nang, Hue, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, and Can Tho. Additionally, the company offers a user-friendly website and mobile app, making it easy to check for seat availability and book a trip online.

Getting around Dalat

The transportation infrastructure in Dalat is well-developed, featuring newly-constructed wide and flat roads. This offers various options for transportation, depending on your purpose and budget. Below are some common modes of transportation for getting around the city.

Motorbikes are always the best choice for exploring a city, not just in Dalat, but anywhere else in Vietnam, as motorbikes are a big part of Vietnamese culture. The cost of renting a bike ranges from 100,000 VND to 200,000 VND, depending on the type of bike and the time you visit, with prices usually lower on weekdays. A manual bike costs 100,000 VND to 120,000 VND ($4 to $5) per day, while an automatic bike costs 150,000 VND to 180,000 VND ($6 to $7) per day. However, this price does not include petrol, so the bike will likely come with an empty gas tank. Make sure to check the tank and find the nearest petrol station to fill it up, as 50,000 VND ($2.1) should be enough for a full day of exploring. Delivery and pickup of the bike are included in the service and will be made to and from wherever you are. A driving license and a helmet are required to ride a motorbike, and in Vietnam, we drive on the right.

Unlike other major cities where ride-hailing apps are dominant, traditional taxis are still preferred in Dalat. If you plan to stay around the city center, using a taxi service is recommended as the locations are not too spread out and the fares are reasonable. If you are traveling with a large family and want to visit the major tourist attractions, taxis can be booked as a half-day or full-day private car for around 700,000 to 1,000,000 VND ($29 to $42).

In addition to well-known names such as Mai Linh taxis, the new generation of taxis in Dalat is registered and operated through an application. They may not look like traditional taxis (without a company sign), but they are reliable. Just make sure you get into the correct car by checking the number plate before getting in. Some popular and reliable taxi brands in Dalat are Dalat Taxi, Mai Linh, and Hoa Binh.

Electric buses

There are five common routes currently operated. These serve as usual hop-on and hop-off buses, so you can get in and get off anytime.

  • Operation time: 7:30 AM – 10:00 PM daily
  • Ticket price: 30,000 – 45,000 VND ($1.2 – $1.9)

Route 1: Yersin Park – Tran Quoc Toan St – City Flower Garden – Yersin Park. This route will take you around Xuan Huong Lake, a symbol of the natural beauty of Dalat. You will drive through the main roads in the city center, passing many colorful flower gardens and city parks, giving you an overview of the town. This is a great option for first-time visitors to Dalat.

Route 2: Yersin Park – Tran Quoc Toan St – Ho Tung Mau St – Tran Phu St – Le Hong Phong St – Trieu Viet Vuong St – Tuyen Lam Lake Tourist Complex. This route will take you out of the city to the South, offering a panoramic view of vast pine forests, magnificent mountains, and a tranquil lake.

Route 3: Yersin Park – Tran Quoc Toan St – Ho Tung Mau St – Tran Hung Dao St – Hung Vuong St – Highway 20 – Trai Mat. The highlight of this route is a breathtaking view of Linh Phuoc Pagoda, a unique religious structure in Dalat. Its final stop is at Trai Mat, often called the town of clouds because in the early morning, the entire village appears to be floating in a sea of white fog and fluffy clouds.

Route 4: Xuan Huong Lake Boat Station – Tran Quoc Toan St – Dinh Tien Hoang St – Phu Dong Thien Vuong St – Mai Anh Dao St – Valley or Love. This route is perfect if you plan to explore the Valley of Love afterward.

Route 5: Yersin Park – Tran Quoc Toan St – Nguyen Trai St – Quang Trung St – Phan Chu Trinh St – Ho Xuan Huong St – Than Tho Lake – Ngo Gia Tu St – Thai Phien Flower Village. This route will show you why Dalat is known as “The city of a thousand flowers.” The route follows winding hill roads with views of flower barns on one side, leading to the destination of Thai Phien Flower Village, where hundreds of types of flowers are grown, harvested, and delivered nationwide.

As a popular holiday destination, Dalat has seen significant growth in transportation and infrastructure, making it highly accessible for travelers.

“Dalat is a dreaming and romantic city. Every time I come to Dalat, I feel like being in somewhere in Europe. The immense pine forest seems like opening a poetic fairy scene. Sometimes, my heart is like slow down to feel the gentle breath of Dalat. How to go to Dalat?

There are two most popular ways to go to Dalat: coach and flight.

Airplane (you can save money if hunting promotion air plane tickets)

If you do not have much time and financial excess, this is a top priority for you. To fly to Da Lat you can go with low-cost airlines as Vietjetair (www.vietjetair.com) and Jetstar Pacific (www.jetstar.com) or VietnamAirlines (www.vietnamairlines.com). Two low-cost airlines usually have promotion tickets online. You should follow their websites or register mail with them for cheap flight tickets. However, flying is always better than transfer by a bus (it only takes 45 minutes for check-in and wait for only 1 hour more); driving the bus at night time, drivers drive very fast and you also heard accidents on the pass of Dalat. In my opinion, Vietjetair and Jetstar tickets have prices on average ranging from 400,000 VND to 850,000 VND which are acceptable if you compared to the bus ride takes up to 8 hours (+30 minutes waiting).

The high-class bus (the most economical way)

From Sai Gon or the southwestern provinces, you can select one of two high-quality double-decker buses, Phuong Trang and Thanh Buoi. Service time is very frequent; having a bus every a half of hour starting from 5 AM to 1 AM the next morning.

Phuong Trang or Thanh Buoi, which one should you take?

I live in Da Lat, so I find that Phuong Trang bus mainly attracts the attention of domestic tourists as well as international tourists. Because Phuong Trang has an easy-to-remember English name (Futabus) and they have two stations in Ho Chi Minh City – one in District 3 and one in District 1, this is the tourist favorite. As for Thanh Buoi, they only have one bus station in Ho Chi Minh City that is located in district 3. Meanwhile, Thanh Buoi bus has won the hearts of Da Lat people, because Thanh Buoi bus quality can be considered better than Phuong Trang, they have newer bus; if being sleeping bus, the seat is more comfortable than Phuong Trang’s one. Dalat Travel Guide – Intro to Da Lat, Vietnam

Find out why the quaint mountain town of Dalat draws many types of visitors for many different reasons in our Dalat Travel Guide .

Dalat Travel Guide – Why Visit?

Dalat is one of the prettiest and most surprising regions of Vietnam. Dalat city is a former hill station from the days of French colonialism. The city and surrounding countryside resemble a French village in the Alps, but Dalat is also an authentic Vietnamese experience.

For example, you can spend your morning in a French colonial villa and your afternoon in a Zen monastery. And all around you will be the gorgeous, central highlands of Vietnam.

Da Lat, Vietnam Travel Guide Waterfalls in the Countryside - Dalat Travel Guide

Enjoying the natural beauty of Dalat is the biggest reason to visit. Spend some time in the little city. It has some good food and interesting activities, but spend most of your time in the countryside.

Dalat is surrounded by scenic highlands filled with fragrant pine forests, vast lakes, picturesque waterfalls, and green rolling hills for as far as you can see. With an elevation of around 1500m, the climate is much cooler and more pleasant than most of Vietnam.

The temperate climate and natural beauty make it a perfect playground for relaxation or romance or adventure or mixture of these. Dalat is good for everything from sightseeing, romantic strolls, and family picnics to various adventure sports and natural thrills.

The Dalat area is great for singles, couples, and families. There is enough to see and do here to fill weeks, but a 3-day stay will let you sample the best of Dalat.

Attractions & Activities in the Countryside

Datanla Falls and Elephant Falls in Da Lat, Vietnam Countryside - Dalat Travel Guide

No visit to Dalat is complete without seeing at least one waterfall. Cam Ly falls is the only one is the city, but it should be avoided due to urban pollution. There are a dozen waterfalls near Dalat. We think the 4 best are Datanla , Elephant , Pongour , and Prenn . Each has special features that make it attractive.

You can read more about the 4 best Dalat waterfalls here . If you’re interested in adventure sports, Datanla falls offers canyoning and abseiling. Note these are very dangerous (3 people died in 2016), and should only be pursued with a licensed tour company. Currently, Phat Tire Ventures is the only licensed company, and they have a good safety record.

Buddhist Temples

The Dalat area has many beautiful temples and pagodas that highlight the diversity of Buddhist culture and temperament in Vietnam. The entry to all these are free, but they do accept donations. Be sure to check out:

  • Lihn Phuoc Temple and the Big Glass Dragon

Linh Phuoc is famous for intricate and massive mosaics that cover the temples and pagoda.

  • Linh An Temple and the Huge Happy Buddha

No to be outdone, Van Hanh has 80 ft (25m) tall golden Buddha that gleams in the warm sunlight of Dalat.

Nature Lovin’

Beautiful scenery is everywhere and is easy to enjoy on your own. Many tour companies also offer organized hikes and activities in different areas. 2 of the best locations are:

  • Tuyen Lam Lake

Tuyen Lam Lake in Da Lat, Vietnam - Dalat Travel Guide

Tuyen Lam is a picturesque and enormous lake that covers 800 acres (320ha). Activities here include walks around the lake, treks into the surrounding forests, paddle boat rides, and kayaking.  Full day tours including hotel pickup, trekking, lunch, kayaking, and drop off start around $40USD.

  • Lang Biang Mountain

At 7117 ft. (2169m) tall, Lang Biang Mountain is the highest peak in the region and has the best panoramic views. You can climb this mountain on your own without need of guide. But it’s 12km from Dalat city, so you’ll need transportation to it. Often tours are the same price as a round trip taxi. There is a well-marked trail through the forest and up to the top. The hike is 3 hours for the person of average fitness. Entry is 20,000VND($1USD).

Adventure Sports – The countryside of Dalat is ripe for outdoorsy adventures including white water rafting, canyoning, mountain biking, jungle treks, and more. We love adventure sports, but advise caution here. The safety standards in Dalat are not the same as those in other places. You must take full responsibility for your own safety here, even if on a tour. In 2016, 3 tourists died at Datanla falls. Their adventure guide was not licensed. There are a few companies that offer “budget” adventure tours, but we only recommend Phat Tire Ventures. They are licensed and emphasize training and safety. Package prices for different activities range from $25-$80USD pax (often including lunch).

Coffee Plantations

Dalat Coffee Plantation in Da Lat, Vietnam Countryside

Specialty coffee can be $3-$4 per cup. And you can buy large bags to bring home.

SwissBel Resort Dalat in Da Lat, Vietnam Countryside - Dalat Travel Guide

SwissBel Resort – Dalat is a great place to splurge on a 5 star, mountain resort – at shockingly low prices. The SwissBel Resort is one of the newest and best resorts in Dalat’s countryside. It has all the luxurious amenities and spectacular views. For around $60-$70USD per night, you can indulge in lavish luxury that would be astronomically more expensive elsewhere.

Check out our review of the SwissBel Resort for one amazing example.

Crazy House Hotel in Da Lat, Vietnam - Dalat Travel Guide

Crazy House Hotel – Dalat also has one of the most unique hotels in the world, The Crazy House mentioned above. The stay would be more for the novelty of the experience than for comfort or luxury, but what an experience. One night is enough. Then switch to a more comfortable hotel. Prices range from $20-$40USD.

Du Parc Hotel Dalat in Da Lat, Vietnam - Dalat Travel Guide

Du Parc Hotel – The Du Parc Hotel Dalat is another great choice for high-end experiences at affordable prices. Du Parc was built in 1932 and has a classic art-deco style. Prices range from $40-$50USD.

Ba Hung Restaurant and Nem Nuong in Da Lat, Vietnam - Dalat Travel Guide

Ba Hung – This restaurant serves a Dalat specialty called Nem Nuong. The dish is a fresh spring roll that you assemble yourself at the table. The restaurant is a local legend. Vietnamese visitors from other parts of the country flock to Ba Hung for this regional specialty. A big serving is only 40,000VND ($2USD). The address is: D51-D52 Khu Quy Hoach – Hoang Van Thu, Dalat

Nhat Ly Restaurant in Da Lat, Vietnam - Dalat Travel Guide

Nhat Ly – This is a good restaurant on Phan Dinh Phung street, but there are many restaurants on this street that have similar menus, quality, and prices. At Nhat Ly and the other restaurants nearby, a nice, typical meal will range from $5-$8USD. The address is: 88 Phan Dinh Phung, Dalat

Pho Hoa Café in Da Lat, Vietnam - Dalat Travel Guide

Pho Hoa – Pho Hoa is another representative recommendation for a street with several nice and similar cafes. Le Dai Hanh Street is full of cafes with elevated terraces and nice city views. We like Pho Hoa, but most places on this street are similarly rewarding. An average meal is $5-$10 with drinks. The address is:  10 Le Dai Hanh Street, Dalat

For most visitors, November – March is the best season to visit. It’s the dry season and you’ll be able to experience more of Dalat’s natural beauty. Early November is the prime time to visit. The rains are over, so you will stay dry. But the rains have just ended so the waterfalls, rivers, and lakes have plenty of water and the highlands are at their greenest and lushest. Avoid June – August, this is the rainiest time of year and you’ll miss out on much of Dalat’s magic. What good is the beautiful scenery if it’s covered in soggy, gray weather?

The fastest and easiest way to get in or out of Dalat is via the new international airport. Domestic flights to and from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City are very cheap, often around $20-$25 USD. There are many ways to get from the airport to Dalat city.

Most hotels offer airport pickup and drop-off, although some charge a fee. There is also a regular shuttle bus service from the airport to the city center that is only 40,000VND ($2USD).

Buses are the most common way to get in or out of Dalat from other cities. These are nice, tourist buses with AC, sleeper chairs, and sometimes WIFI.

There are direct routes to and from Ho Chi Minh City (8hrs), Hue (15hrs), Nha Trang (4hrs), and other Vietnamese cities. The route from the beach city of Nha Trang is the most popular. This route costs around $12-$15USD. The three best companies are Mai Linh, Phuong Trang, and Sinh Café.

This is a realistic, mid-range to high-end budget for people who flew across the world for a fun holiday. It’s NOT a rock bottom, spare-every-penny budget. You could visit Dalat for less, but you could also spend a lot more. This budget will let you experience the best of Dalat without scrimping too much or overspending.

Food and Drinks – $15-20 pax/day. Great food is very cheap in Vietnam. This is actually a high estimate for food and drinks. It includes indulgent meals, snacks, coffees, and cocktails. You could spend as little as $6 pax/day, if you stick to street food and cut out coffees and cocktails.

Accommodation – $20-$70/day for your group. Vietnam also has cheap hotels. For about $20, you could get a modest, but very nice, clean, and comfy hotel. For about $70, you could stay in a 4 or 5-star resort. There are also many great options in between.

Activities and Tours – $10-$80 pax/day. This one is tough to calculate on a daily basis. A day touring the city on your own can cost around $10 pax. A group tour of the countryside costs around $15 pax. A private tour of the countryside costs around $25-$30 pax. A day of adventure sports can cost $25-$80 pax.

3-day Expenses for a Couple – $250-$300 for 2 people over 3 days for an indulgent time including a nice hotel, big meals, cocktails, and few extras here and there. This couple’s budget also includes a DIY city tour, a full day private countryside tour, and one day of adventure sports.

Please note that we recommend a minimum of 2 full days in the Dalat area, with an emphasis on the countryside. It’s hard to enjoy in less time than this. Otherwise, skip Dalat and focus more time on other areas of Vietnam.

Traveling to Da Lat for the First Time (Tips & Tricks)

Dalat has long been a famous tourist city in Vietnam. Cool climate, rich natural resources, and human resources help the city each year attract millions of tourists to visit and relax. After a quiet period of the 1980s, Da Lat tourism changed dramatically in recent years. Like a little Paris, Da Lat used to dream and be poetic thanks to the highland cold at night, early morning fog, and pine forests surrounding the city. However, this space has somewhat lost its French character in the lack of care or inappropriately modified villa architecture. Tourism is a strength, but it is also a factor that changes Dalat towards urbanization.

The History of Dalat

Lang Biang Plateau before 1893 was the residence of the Montagnards. The first Vietnamese who intended to explore the mountainous region of South Central Vietnam was Nguyen Thong, but due to many reasons, until the end of his life, he still could not fulfill his intention. In 1880 and 1881, Naval doctor Paul Néis and Lieutenant Albert Septans made their first expeditions into the Montagnards in the Southeast and the South Central Coast, and they are considered the first two explorers to find out Lang Biang Plateau. The itineraries of Paul Néis and Albert Septans paved the way for many other trips such as A. Gautier (1882), L. Nouet (1882), Major Humann (1884).

The History of Dalat

On August 3, 1891, Dr. Alexandre Yersin made the first expedition to find a mountain road from Nha Trang to Saigon, but this trip was unsuccessful. From March 28 to June 9, 1892, Yersin made an expedition from Nha Trang, crossing the Dak Lak highlands to Stung Treng, located on the banks of the Mekong River (in Cambodia).

In January 1893, Yersin accepted the assignment from the governor, Jean Marie Antoine de Lanessan, to survey a road from Saigon deep into the Montagnards and ended at a convenient location on the coast of Trung Ky. Yersin also had to learn about the resources in the region: forest products, minerals, and livestock,… From April 8 to June 26, 1893, Yersin made three important trips. And at 3:30 a.m. on June 21, Yersin discovered Langbiang Plateau.

The History of Dalat

With the need to find land with a temperate climate, almost similar to Europe to build resorts and nursing stations, governor Paul Doumer wrote a letter asking for Yersin’s opinion, and Yersin replied that it was Lang Biang. In March 1899, Yersin and his governor, Doumer made a trip to Lang Biang Plateau and this trip was of decisive significance for the establishment of a nursing station here.

On November 1, 1899, Doumer signed a decree to establish in Trung Ky, Dong Nai Thuong province (Haut-Donnai) and two administrative stations to be established at Tánh Linh and the Lang Biang plateau. Dalat College of Education

Dalat College of Education (formerly Grand Lycée Yersin) is an architecture recognized by the World Association of Architects (UIA) as one of 1,000 unique constructions of the world in the 20th century. The school was founded by the French in 1927, designed and directed by the architect Moncet, for French children and several wealthy Vietnamese families. In 1932, the Petit Lycée Dalat School was renamed the Grand Lycée de Dalat Lycée Yersin to commemorate Dr. Alexandre Yersin. The classrooms are built in an arc shape, the brick for the school building is red ceiling bricks brought from Europe, the roof is roofed with tiles made from France. At present, the roofing tiles have been replaced because the old tiles are no longer usable. The highlight of the arc-shaped row of houses is the bell tower. The outside of the bell tower used to have a clock, but perhaps it was dismantled, visitors can only see traces of the large clock imprinted on the brick background. There is also no bell above the bell tower as it was probably dismantled during the old regime.

Xuan Huong Lake

Xuan Huong Lake was originally a valley with a Cam Ly stream flowing through, where the original Lach residents gathered. In 1919, from the initiative of the Cunhac envoy, civil engineer Labbé proceeded to stop the stream from forming a lake. In 1923, the contemporary government built a dam below to create two lakes. In March 1932, a major storm broke both dams. In 1934 – 1935, Tran Dang Khoa re-designed and built a large stone dam: it is Mr. Dao’s Bridge today.

Xuan Huong Lake

Lake is the heart of Da Lat city and is one of the rare cities with a lake located in the center. A lake is a famous place and also an attractive tourist attraction that creates a unique feature for Dalat. The outstanding architectural work associated with Xuan Huong Lake is Thuy Ta. During the French colonial period, the name was “La Grenouillère” (frog lagoon). Do you understand this name? But looking at the structure, there is a tower to jump into the water like a swimming pool. The Sino-Vietnamese name “Thủy Tạ” is sometimes understood as “Thủy Tọa”, which means architecture located on the water.

Than Tho Lake

Located about 6 km east of Dalat city center, along Quang Trung – Ho Xuan Huong Street. Visiting here, you will be told about touching love stories that borrowed lake water to keep your faithful love affair.

Than Tho Lake

The reason is famous because the lake is located near the Martial School of Da Lat (now the Army Academy) and associated with a golden age of the school in the 1950s and early 1960s. Sunday is a family of practitioners and lovers who come together to have fun here. And until now, there is still the story of Thao – Tam and the grave of the ill-fated daughter named Thao cold in Pine Hill, 2 graves (from outside to the left-hand side of the resort).

Than Tho Lake is located on a high hill amid a tranquil pine forest. The scenery around the lake is poetic, the water surface is always calm and pensive. The road along the lake seems to disappear in the distance. There seemed to be only the whirring sound of the breeze, the sound of the pine whining, like sobs. There is a very strange pair of pine trees in the north of the lake forming a pair of pine “lovers” bound together without leaving and visitors can go there to take souvenir photos. The pine hill in Than Tho Lake also seems to be more beautiful than other places because the pine is sparsely populated and evenly taller, so when the sun shines down on the grass it is very beautiful.

Tuyen Lam Lake

From a deserted valley at an altitude of 1,000m above sea level, Tuyen Lam Lake has been transformed into an ideal resort spot in the highlands. The lake is located 5km from Da Lat, neatly between the immense pine forest and the legendary purple stream. The dry season in this area lasts 6 months, not a single drop of rain, but the lake bed is still full of water. The lake surface is blue all year round, rarely having big waves. The three-leaf pine forest covered the surrounding mountains and hills, stretching out a thousand eyes. All blend, creating a picture of a quiet, peaceful, and exotic nature. Those who visit Dalat also visit Truc Lam Zen Monastery so that from the top of Phuong Hoang Mountain, they can see the Southeast, admire the famous landscape created by this human hand.

Tuyen Lam Lake

Cam Ly Waterfall

According to the legend told by the village elders here, the name Cam Ly is derived from the K’Ho language. When the Cam Le Stream passed through a village of a tribe of Lat people, the chief of the K ‘Ho of that clan was named K’ Mly, so people in the area took his name for their stream to remember the merits of the village head who governed the beautiful village. And for a long time, people read it as Cam Ly. Besides, there is a hypothesis that Cam Ly is derived from Sino-Vietnamese origin (oranges are sweet and glass is absorbed). This means that Cam Ly is a symbol of a stream of fresh water that once captivated tourists. Previously, Cam Ly was associated with a pine forest next to it, named “forest of love” (boie d ‘amour) but that forest is no more today. The waterfall stream lacks water in the dry season, but in the rainy season, the water is flowing, giant blocks of water pour down violently.

Cam Ly Waterfall

The flow of Cam Ly Waterfall is about 10m high, not high but the water flow is still strong and gentle. This is a waterfall that goes into a lot of poetry and songs. The waterfall is one of the indispensable symbols of foggy cities like Xuan Huong Lake or Than Tho Lake. Sadly, at present, Cam Ly Waterfall is heavily polluted by waste from upstream. Many visitors have witnessed with their own eyes that they regret it, hoping that one day they can see the majestic and pure Cam Ly Waterfall again.

Tiger Cave Waterfall

Tiger Cave Waterfall, 15 km east of Da Lat city, belongs to Tuy Son, Xuan Tho Commune. The waterfall is located in the middle of a pine forest with an area of 308 hectares. The waterfall is about 50 meters high, more than 500 meters long, on the way from Da Lat to Dran (Don Duong). Tiger Cave Waterfall has many other names such as Ong Tiger waterfall, Ong Thuan waterfall, Da Sar waterfall, Thien Thai waterfall, Long Nhan waterfall,…

Tiger Cave Waterfall

Note Dangerous high waterfall, in February 2017, a foreign tourist and a Vietnamese guide died here while participating in the adventure waterfall tour.

Prenn Falls

The name Prenn recalls a distant period in the 15th – 17th centuries when the mountainous and hilly areas were still the battlefield boundary of the wars of aggression and territorial protection. Prenn originated in the Cham language meaning “invading area”, while indigenous peoples such as Lat, Chil, and Sre called the invader “Prenn People ”.

Prenn Falls

From Ho Chi Minh City, follow Road 20 to Da Lat, you must pass Prenn Pass 10 km long. At the foot of the pass, about 100m away, visitors will enjoy the smoothness and grace of a curtain of water gently pouring from a height of 10m down to a small valley, surrounded by flowers and pine hills.

Especially with the cable car system, you can cross the waterfall in a feeling of adventure, as if you are going into a fairyland,…

Datanla Waterfall

It takes 5km from the center of Dalat, located between Prenn Pass. From Highway 20, turning down the slope about 300m to a small valley, you will meet Datanla waterfall with a fascinating and wild landscape.

Datanla Waterfall

Being put into exploitation in 2000, Datanla Waterfall with clear water flowing through 7 layers of rocky mountain and then falling large rocks, blowing white foam. Coming here, in addition to watching the falls, you also have the opportunity to participate in “unique” adventure games such as waterfall climbing, waterfall crossing,… Datanla Waterfall has beautiful smooth rocks, the old legend of the fairies on the roof. The world often stops visiting and bathing in streams, so this area is also known as Suoi Tien. Going further down, there is a deep valley called Death. This is a quite dangerous place, it is very easy to have an accident if it is not explored by professional units with safe equipment.

Con Ga Church

Dalat Cathedral (official name: St. Nicola Bari Cathedral, also another name is Con Ga Church because there is a large chicken on top of the bell tower) is a Catholic church in Vietnam. This is the cathedral of the bishop of Da Lat Diocese, also the largest church in Da Lat, one of the oldest and most typical architectural works of this city left by the French. The church is located on Tran Phu street (near Novotel hotel) in Da Lat city.

Con Ga Church

The church is located on Tran Phu Street, with a design in the model of the Roman Catholic churches in Europe, typical of the Roman school of architecture. The ground of the church in the shape of a cross (like a cross) has a length of 65m, a width of 14m, and a bell tower of 47m high. At that height, from the bell tower, you can see the whole city. The main door of the church faces Langbiang mountain.

The facade with the bell tower section rising. The lines and details on the facade completely imitate the original European models. The window has a circular arch, strong and definitive lines, organized according to the vertical hierarchy, the roof is covered with marble tiles, especially the ratio between the blocks is very harmonious and tight.

The cathedral’s interior consists of 3 compartments: 1 large space in the middle and 2 small spaces on the sides. The work section clearly shows the rolling system in the form of an intact scroll series and cradle arch system. The columns in the interior have column head systems, simulating the classic form combined with spontaneity. Both the plan and the façade are designed strictly symmetrically in the classical way.

Domaine de Marie Church

Domaine de Marie Church is also known as Vinh Son church (because it is the chapel of the Nu Tu Bac Ai Vinh Son Soeurs), Mai Anh church (because in the past this area had a lot of cherry blossoms). This is an architectural cluster consisting of a chapel and two rows of Bac Ai Thanh Vinh Son monastery with a total area of 12 hectares located on Ngo Quyen Street, about 1 km southwest of Dalat city center.

Domaine de Marie Church

The structure of the church’s architecture is still in the form of a cross, but the proportion is somewhat more liberal, free of strict regulations on religious architecture in Europe. The width is 11 m and the length is 33 m. Two stairways go up to the main door and reenter the main hall. The outside of the church is designed in an isosceles triangle, on the sharp top of the roof with a cross, the front is adorned with small lance-shaped arches. In the center of the facade, near the top of the roof, there is a circular rose window, a detail that often appeared in French churches in the late 17th century.

The roof windows protrude from the majority of the roof, creating a charming highlight for a fairly large roof area, as well as a place to attach stained glass panels to illuminate the cathedral space more sparkling and fanciful. The roof system, shaped like the communal house of the Central Highlands ethnic group. In addition, the church is built with adhesives such as lime, molasses, and several other additives, most of which come from Vietnam. Since its completion up to now, the church has only used dark pink lime to sweep the wall, glowing when the sun shines on, very characteristic that you cannot mistake when coming to Dalat.

Cam Ly Church

Cam Ly Church (Cam ly is the name of a waterfall in Da Lat) or Son Cuoc Church is a church of the Vietnamese Catholic Church in Da Lat city, Lam Dong, Vietnam. The church mainly serves ethnic minorities. The church was built by Father Boutary, a Frenchman, for many years with the ethnic minorities and contractor Nguyen Thanh Ho. The church was built in 6 years from 1960-1968.

Cam Ly Church

The church architecture is stylized from the traditional communal roofs of ethnic minorities in the Central Highlands and is reflected in the spirit of the rustic architectural school. There is a harmonious combination between western architecture and the traditions of the people.

In the foyer there are two beasts: a tiger symbolizing strength; The phoenix represents wisdom. The ethnic people feel safe when the tiger is guarding nearby and the phoenix warns from afar. In addition, these beasts also represent religious significance: Primitive humans had wild instincts like a tiger, but when perfected by God, would become as wise as a phoenix.

Tourists often know Da Lat city with poetic pine hills, many kinds of strange flowers, a lake without knowing that the Foggy City also owns many beautiful ancient temples.

Phung Hoang Truc Lam Zen Monastery

Located on Phung Hoang Mountain, next to Tuyen Lam Lake, the city center. Dalat was about 4 km along the way the birds flew. The monastery has an area of 24 hectares founded by Venerable Thich Thanh Tu on April 8, 1993, and completed on February 8, 1994. The first sketch has the participation of famous architect Ngo Viet Thu. Because it was only built a decade ago, the harmonious architecture between the needle and the neck looks harmonious and elegant. Truc Lam Zen Monastery does not have an ancient and magnificent beauty like other temples, but this place hides many mysteries of the spiritual world.

Phung Hoang Truc Lam Zen Monastery

Truc Lam Zen Monastery is considered to be the largest monastery in the country both in terms of space and the size of the gathering. In the main hall only Buddha Shakyamuni holding lotus branches. Right outside is a majestic tower hanging a large bell 1.98 m high and weighs 1.1 tons on the engraved poem of Truc Lam Dau Da.

It can be said that the flower garden of the temple is one of the tourist spots not to be missed and is a rare flower garden that collects many exotic flowers. The flowers are planted by monks and nuns and have a whole nursery and transplanted. The varieties of flowers are brought home from all over the world to cultivate. The most famous are varieties: purple sim, Australian cotton, content,…

Van Hanh Zen Monastery

Van Hanh Zen Monastery is a Zen monastery located at 39 Phu Dong Thien Vuong Street, Ward 8, Da Lat City. This monastery attracts monks and nuns everywhere and is an attractive attraction of Da Lat city.

Van Hanh Zen Monastery

The most outstanding feature of the temple is the outdoor statue of “Buddha Shakyamuni”. The statue is 24m high, 20m wide, holding a lotus petal in the right hand. This image is special in Zen Tong called “Niêm Hoa Vi Tiếu.” According to the scriptures: Once at Linh Thu, when Duc The Ton held up a lotus wing, the entire congregation was silent and bewildered, only Mr. Ca Dare smiled. The Buddha immediately said: “I have the Eye of the Dharma, the Magic Heart of Nirvana, the Real General of the Great General, this Dharma Transcendental Language, from now on I pass it on to Ca Diếp”.

The lotus petals in the past at Linh Thu Mountain over two thousand five hundred and five years ago were once again vividly depicted in Da Lat City in the precinct of Van Hanh Zen Monastery. This is not only a sanctuary for monks, nuns, Buddhists, and visitors to the pilgrimage, but is also considered one of the unique cultural works showing the unique architecture of Buddhism.

Thien Vuong Co Sat Pagoda

There are many ways to explain why this place is called Cu Lan Village. Either way is interesting, but the way that villagers tell is still the oldest and most widely circulated. In the olden days, there was a boy in the plain going up the mountain, going into the forest with the dream of picking up stones to build a paradise in the forest to give to his loved one.

Cu Lan Village

Perhaps with the dream of “picking stones and patching the sky” and the foolish way of being different from people, called that Thằng Cù Lần. The rumor about a Thằng Cù Lần picking up stones to build a paradise on high mountains, in the middle of a deep forest to give to the person he loved has passed down to the girl that Cu Lan fell in love with. The girl left the street and waded up the mountain into the forest. Overwhelmed by the splendid beauty of wild mountains and forests, touched by the sincere love of Cu Lan. The girl stayed in the middle of the forest with Cu Lan. They have forever failed to build the paradise of their dreams. What to eat in Da Lat

It is not difficult to find bakery shops in this misty country. The most attractive thing is the large coal furnace, with many round molds on the surface. The oven is always full of fragrant smoke, making everyone passing by want to linger. Like grilled rice paper with dried shrimp fat, grilled sweet potatoes, or fragrant grilled corn stalls on the street corner, Banh Can also make everyone who has come to Da Lat once find, to bring back a few memories.

Bánh Căn Đà Lạt

For many people who love Banh Can Da Lat, the Avocado Can Cake Shop located in Tang Bat Ho is one of the indispensable addresses. Over the past 10 years, Banh Can here has had only one type of egg filling but has received many compliments from diners. Another strange thing is, if you like, you can prepare your humanity and bring along, the mandarin will be ready to serve you.

Bánh Xíu Mại

This is a gentle and quite popular dish in Dalat. Da Lat Commercial Department is made from well-crafted meat, so it has just enough toughness and toughness and has a light taste. The broth is simmered from pork bones, mingled with the sweetness of lean meatballs, adding a little creamy fat, and sliced green onions, making the dish extremely attractive.

Bánh Xíu Mại

When used with bread, people usually add a little bit of satay to create color and spice. You can use little extra bean sprouts, cilantro, or non-crispy fat cloves, put it in the cup while it’s hot to soak in the sauce, and use it until it is very fragrant.

Canh Hoa Atiso Hầm Giò Heo

Coming to the dreamy mountain town of Da Lat, not only looking for nature, a cool fresh climate but also an opportunity to enjoy the typical products of the cold land. That place has flowers that people immediately think of Dalat as a very specific taste that visitors often remind each other to enjoy and bring as gifts – artichokes.

Canh Hoa Atiso Hầm Giò Heo

Referring to artichoke, the most special one must be the famous dish – artichoke flower soup stewed with pork rolls. The sweetness of the pork rolls mingles with the cool taste of artichoke cotton, giving birth to a soup that is not only delicious but also extremely nutritious. How to enjoy this dish is “unique”. The artichoke flower, after being scooped into a cup, uses your hands to remove each layer of petals, layer after layer, chewing slowly and thoroughly to fully absorb the sweet taste.

As a specialty of Dalat, the artichoke flower soup with pig’s sausage is not as flavorful as in the middle of the world here. Among artichoke dishes, pork sausage is the most attractive. Eating pieces of artichoke or simmering pork rolls will see the full blend of food.

Rice dishes

Cơm niêu đà lạt.

Cơm Niêu is a specialty in the thousand-year dish of our Vietnamese people. Gạo Tám is cooked in a copper pot or other pots cannot taste the same as cooked in a clay pot.

Cơm Niêu Đà Lạt

It is not difficult for you to find a famous restaurant or a pot of rice in Da Lat. Under the cold weather of Dalat, the hot and scorched yellow rice pot will be a delicious dish that you should not give up.

Cơm Tấm Đà Lạt

Previously, Cơm Tấm was just a rustic dish. But over time, the idyllic dish follows the countryside to urban areas and gradually becomes a popular dish in the whole city. Broken rice was once considered as “poor rice”, but with the skillful hands of talented chefs, broken rice has become a specialty of Da Lat people.

Cơm Tấm Đà Lạt

Dalat has many broken rice shops but the most delicious and famous is the MEI broken rice. This dining place leaves an impression on you when traveling to Dalat because of the large oven with high chimneys and fragrant grilled ribs. The ribs here are carefully selected and marinated with spices, bearing the essence of Da Lat broken rice.

Enjoy the broken rice dish with a little fish sauce, onion fat mixed well on the plate, and then slowly feel the delicious aroma, the fatty taste, the mild sweetness in each rice grain, and accompanying dishes, you will feel all the sophistication of this dish. Rice is cooked with chicken broth but not greasy, served with fried chicken pieces, or fragrant boiled. Each portion of rice also comes with optional soup.

Cơm Gà (Chicken Rice)

The most famous restaurant is Hai Phan Rang Chicken Rice at 28 Tran Nhat Duat address. The chickens here are sold in pieces, each piece is charged for that piece, the price of rice is calculated separately. Compared with the general premises in Da Lat, it is a bit expensive, but I think if you are traveling to Da Lat and craving chicken rice, it is acceptable.

Bánh Ướt Lòng Gà

In other regions, wet cakes often go with cha, in Da Lat, wet cakes are strange variations with meat and chicken hearts. The combination of the soft wet cake with the sweet aromatic chicken and the chewy chicken heart creates an interesting play dish.

Bánh Ướt Lòng Gà

Rice cakes are non-glutinous rice mixed with a little flour and tapioca to create aroma and flexibility. After soaking the rice, grind, mix more flour and add a certain percentage of water to prevent rinsing. The cake is flexibly coated in layers so that the cake is even and not thin.

The heart and chicken served with the wet cake are also prepared very carefully. Chickens are usually chickens that are raised in the garden to have firm and tough meat. To avoid a fishy smell, the chicken, after preliminary processing, will be lightly marinated with a little spice and garlic.

Bánh Tráng Nướng

At night, rice paper is not difficult to find. You will meet stalls around Xuan Huong Lake, or in the night market of Dalat. The main ingredients that make up the dish are rice paper and chicken eggs, dotted with little green onions and dried shrimp. When eating, just put up a little chili sauce, fold it up, and diners can enjoy the dish that is memorable for many people.

Bánh Tráng Nướng

Dalat has a lot of Banh Canh Shops. But so famous that it became the default “if you haven’t eaten Banh Canh, then you don’t have to go to Da Lat yet” is Xuan An on Nha Chung Street. The cake is delicious because the cake is handmade, chewy, and soft, the fish cake is crispy and smooth, and the broth is rich.

Bánh Canh

It will not be difficult to find a Hue beef noodle shop anywhere, but in different places, this dish has its own identity because it is adapted to the taste of the people there. Rated as one of the best dishes in Vietnam, a simple bowl of vermicelli includes noodle soup, beef, spring rolls, cinnamon rolls, blood,… In Dalat, the noodles used are of moderate size and firmness. When you eat, you still feel its smoothness and flexibility without being bored.

Especially with the cold weather of Dalat, the bowl of vermicelli will cool down quickly, so you must enjoy the food a little faster. Perhaps this is also part of making a difference in the way of enjoying the dishes in this land.

Hot pot dishes in Da Lat

Lẩu gà lá é.

The leaves are in the same family as basil. The taste is a bit similar to the basil leaves. A chicken hotpot has about half a chicken, a large plate of noodles, a plate of mushroom, a few bamboo shoots, Thai chess, and of course, a plate of leafy vegetables is indispensable. The hot pot broth here has the aromatic and pungent flavor of chili, which is very suitable for the typical cold atmosphere of Dalat. If you are suffering from the flu, this hot pot served with this leaf is an “elixir” for you.

Lẩu Gà Lá É

Speaking of chicken hotpot, you must mention Tao Ngo restaurant at the end of 3/4 street (about 2km from Xuan Huong Lake). Previously, this was a restaurant that only local people knew, but because of delicious food, gradually, this restaurant became a must-eat dish, the must-go address of many tourists when coming to Da Lat.

Ba Toa Beef Hotpot

Ba Toa is the name of an area in Da Lat (about 1km from Da Lat market), the reason for this name is because it used to be a slaughterhouse. The beef hotpot here is famous for its thick, large, and soft beef. Not to mention that there are more tendons, tails, and plump buckets in the pot, just to see if the belly wants to boil.

Ba Toa Beef Hotpot

Ba Toa beef hotpot is fragrant with the scent of mountain beef. In addition to a lot of beef, the beef hot pot here also has egg noodles and green vegetables (in Da Lat, every dish with vegetables, the vegetable plate is fresh and green quality).

The Ba Toa area is filled with hot pot restaurants, but the most typical ones are A Ba Toa, Thanh Tam. In addition, Ba Toa beef hotpot at Go on Hoang Dieu Street is also worth a visit. Sitting in cozy houses, eating fragrant beef hot pot, with typical sweet green vegetables of Dalat, we can see why so many people are certain to come to Dalat to eat Ba Toa beef hotpot once.

Da Lat Grilled Spring Rolls

Usually, when hearing about throwing, people think of sour meat, but not with Da Lat rolls. Dalat grilled spring rolls are made from carefully selected pork, pureed, seasoned with garlic onions, forcing workers to go through a process of swabbing by hand to create toughness for the dish. When it reaches the desired toughness, this food is long rounded on a wooden chopstick for easy baking and will definitely have to be baked on a charcoal stove. The scent of marinated meat, aromatic spices, blended with the smell of hot coal smoke to create a strangely attractive flavor.

Da Lat Grilled Spring Rolls

Accompanying Da Lat grilled spring rolls, the first is crispy fried rice paper. This is simply a kind of rice paper used to roll, rolled into long sticks, fried in gold, making the dish “crispy”.

Dalat is famous for green vegetables, so this specialty cannot be ignored. Da Lat grilled spring rolls are served with salad, coriander, chives. Because the spring rolls are already fragrant, now the rice paper rolls with a crispy and fragrant salad, the taste of this combination cannot be described with words. And, Dalat green vegetables are the part to help the dish help the fat when it comes with the crispy fried rice paper just mentioned above.

Two things go with some itinerary just like this special spring roll that is indispensable, which are also the things that make the difference for Dalat grilled spring rolls with other places. These are pickled tubers and dipping sauces.

Da Lat Grilled Spring Rolls

Pickled tubers include carrots, white radish, shallot, and cucumber soaked in vinegar, creating a certain sweetness for the dish, making diners not feel bored or sick. Normally, in every Dalat grilled spring roll shop, there is raw garlic to go with this dish. The spicy garlic flavor, combined with the pickled fruits will make the dish “healthy”, suitable for even the stomach that is uncomfortable with strange dishes.

The most special thing about this dish is the sauce. Peanuts, garlic onion, a little meat, add seasoning, puree, and boil. Eating with rolls, fried rice paper, with vegetables, pickled fruits,… Da Lat grilled spring rolls reached a limit that is hard to criticize and even more unforgettable.

Vietnam: "Slow travel" by train becomes a trend

With the rise in domestic air fares, train travel has been a new tourism trend in vietnam..

"Travelling by train is cheaper than flying, safer than driving, free from traffic jams, and allows passengers to enjoy the natural scenery outside the window," said Thu Hoa, a tourist from Hanoi's Cau Giay District, explaining her choice of travel mode for her trip across Vietnam from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City.

Leisurely immersed in nature

According to Hoa, Danang-Hue is known as the most beautiful stretch of the north-south railway. The majestic scenery of wild and beautiful nature as the train passes through Hai Van Pass and Lang Co Bay gives her unforgettable experiences.

Meanwhile, the route between Ho Chi Minh City and Nha Trang offers visitors an experience of poetic beauty, with pristine beaches stretching as far as the eye can see.

These are advantages that make rail tourism the choice of more and more travelers, especially young people. It is also a form of tourism that is predicted to become a trend, especially in the context of rising domestic air ticket prices.

When traveling by train from the central highland city of Dalat to Trai Mat Station, passengers can immerse themselves in the city's flower fields and rows of vibrant cherry trees. Meanwhile, tourists taking the Muong Hoa mountain train in Sapa City will be exposed to the majestic Hoang Lien Son mountain range and villages shrouded in mist.

"Traveling by train can bring different experiences that no other means of transportation can provide," Thu Hoa told The Hanoi Times.

"The most wonderful thing is not the destination, but the journey. As the train wheels roll along the tracks, travelers have the opportunity to slow down and take in the beauty of nature as well as the local life of each place they pass through," she continued.

A new trend in travel

With the recent emergence of luxury trains, rail tourism is increasingly demonstrating its strength in meeting both transportation and accommodation needs. It is also considered to be in line with the trend of sustainable tourism. These plus points explain why train travel is becoming more and more the choice of the tourists.

High-quality trains on short routes such as Hanoi - Haiphong, Hanoi - Lao Cai, Danang - Hue - Dong Hoi, Ho Chi Minh City - Nha Trang, or Ho Chi Minh City - Binh Thuan are often full.

According to statistics from the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, the number of domestic tourists and inbound tourists traveling by train in 2023 reached 10 million and 1.5 million respectively, up 15% and 20% from 2022.

In particular, the recent Reunification Day (April 30) and Labor Day (May 1) holidays saw a strong increase in the number of train passengers. A report from the Danang Department of Tourism shows that in those five days alone, the number of visitors to Danang by train exceeded 16,000, a 60% increase over the same period in 2023. Many other destinations such as Hue, Nha Trang, and Haiphong also reported a surge in rail tourists.

In 2021, CNN published a list of six amazing train journeys in Asia, including a representative from Vietnam, The Vietgage - the train that runs between Danang and Quy Nhon, carries no more than 12 passengers at a time, and offers upscale amenities not unlike a five-star hotel.

In 2022, Vietnam's North-South Train made the list of the 10 most impressive overnight train journeys in the world. In 2023, Lonely Planet's "Amazing Train Journeys" guide named the Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City line one of the most incredible train trips in the world.

This suggests that railway tourism is a potential market for Vietnam's smokeless industry, enough to create "nostalgia" for both domestic and foreign tourists.

According to Nguyen Cong Hoan, CEO of Flamingo Red Tours, the increase in domestic airfares has made the tour 10-15% more expensive, causing tourists to weigh their transportation options more carefully. This has opened up opportunities for train travel.

"Organizing sightseeing tours by rail has not only helped lower tour prices but also improved the experience, as rail services have been continuously improved and could meet the increasing demand from tourists," he said.

A new era for train services

There was a time when rail passenger service was lagging due to competition from low-cost airlines, the gradual perfection of the highway system, and the rise of the private automobile.

However, to diversify its customer base, the rail industry has been constantly innovating and upgrading its infrastructure and services. In particular, several luxury trains have recently entered service.

Just before this year's Reunification Day (April 30) and May Day (May 1) holidays, following the success of the high-quality Hanoi-Danang trains (SE19 and SE20), the sector launched a pair of SE21 and SE22 trains from Ho Chi Minh to Danang, offering free wifi with high-quality entertainment, culinary and services.

Earlier, Vietnam Railways Corporation (VRC), in cooperation with Thua Thien-Hue Provincial People's Committee and Danang City People's Committee, launched a tourist train route between Hue and Danang called "Central Heritage Connection". This is the result of the five-star trans-Vietnam project that Vietravel and VRC have been implementing since the end of 2023.

Thanks to the project, passengers will explore famous places through the five-star train and get to know the cultural and historical values of the Vietnamese people since ancient times. Nguyen Quoc Ky, Chairman of Vietravel Group, affirmed that the project will bring groundbreaking tourism products, contribute to the development of railway tourism in Vietnam, and create a unique cultural experience.

At the recent Hanoi Tourism Festival 2024, Flamingo Redtours launched the "Travel along Vietnam on Rolling Train Wheels" tour, whose itinerary includes Quang Binh - Phong Nha Cave - Bang Onsen (five days), as well as Hue - Danang - Hoi An Ancient Town (five days). It allows visitors to enjoy the beautiful scenery along the central region and have an unforgettable experience on the modern, new-generation train line. Some travel agencies are also developing new products that combine travel by rail, road, and water to provide tourists with diverse experiences.

Nguyen Tien Dat, CEO of AZA Travel, said that in addition to investing in the construction and improvement of train carriages, railway-related tourism products need to ensure a complete package, from transportation to accommodation, food and entertainment.

Some have said that railway stations themselves are heritage sites with unique architecture, and therefore need investment to become impressive tourist destinations. At the same time, good coordination is essential so that services such as transportation, sightseeing, and accommodation at each location can fully satisfy tourists.

In late 2023, French Ambassador to Vietnam Olivier Brochet informed the Ministry of Transport of the intention of a number of famous French fashion brands, including Louis Vuitton, to operate a vintage luxury train between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Belmond Ltd. has also sent a request to the Vietnamese Prime Minister and Ministry of Transport for permission and support to operate the Eastern & Oriental Express luxury tourist train on a number of rail routes in Vietnam. These are the harbingers of a railway tourism boom in the S-shaped country shortly.
