Singapore: Everything about the 40-minute SG River Cruise

Singapore River Cruise review: When I hear Singapore, there are always Marina Bay Sands in the backdrop, the lotus-shaped Art Science Museum, and the dreamy skyline. While there are a thousand things to see , I’ve always wondered what the boats circling the river felt like – and I finally got on one!

When I was younger, I visited the Singapore Zoo , Sentosa, and even Jurong Bird Park (now called the Bird Paradise Park) but never the boat cruise. My parents thought it would be ‘boring’. Looking back now, I guess they were right and wrong. After all, it’s simply a slow riverboat ride.

However, I loved it when I took the ride by myself – it opens up another perspective to look at of the city. With the tickets at a dear price, I’d to put this Singapore River Cruise review out.

Best time to Visit SG River Cruise

The river cruise timings are 10 am to 9 pm on the weekends while it starts at 1 pm on the weekdays. The weekends – Friday, Saturday, and Sunday can be crowded but any weekday is fine to avoid the wait. More people tend to visit in the evenings to get a night view of the city.

Thus, the best time for the Singapore river cruise depends on you. Either way, the landscape makes it all worth it be it day or night. Singapore’s attractions are bound to be amazing everywhere. My priority was avoiding waiting anywhere I went, so I went for the afternoon cruise. When I got there, I realized I was too early on a weekday (around 11:30 am).

That gave me enough time to have a subway at Clarke Quay Central for lunch and take a few shots of the river and the colorful shop buildings and pathways. Getting on one of the first river cruise trips of the day, the boat was half empty and was a comfortable ride throughout.

Singapore River Cruise Review: Ticket Price

On the Clarke Quay river cruise stand, the on-spot tickets here are a flat S$26 for adults and S$17 for children. I tried my luck asking if there was a student concession like they had for the SG National Gallery . But they didn’t.

Anyhow, I bought the ticket and was told to wait until the boat arrived at the dock. It costs the same via the offline counter or any website. Yet I’d recommend getting your tickets for the river cruise on Klook.com.

Klook, being a big and reliable travel site (especially in Singapore), it’s useful to get discounts when you book multiple attractions across Singapore.

For travelers like me, another great option is to get the Klook Pass which includes a list of attractions in SG that the ticket is applicable. You have the option to choose the number of attraction passes and get a bundle of SG attractions tickets for lesser.

SG River Cruise vs River Cruise by Water B

The 40-minute river cruise is a round-trip ride that drops you back at the start point. In case you didn’t know, there are two cruise operators. The popular one is at Clarke Quay (the dark brown boats) and the other point begins from ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands (the modern red and green ones).

Singapore River Cruise vs River Cruise by Water B: Both rides traverse through the same river routes and don’t differ much. They even have similar pricing and both have indoor and outdoor seating.

Here are the updated pricing difference between Clarke Quay and Water B Cruises as of today on Klook.com. They aren’t that different, it comes down to your preference. Grab your ticket on Klook.com today!

But I recommend the Singapore river cruise operator (the one I went in) as it’s a traditional bumboat with its wooden interiors and low ceilings giving off a more rustic experience.

How to Get to SG River Cruise Point?

With Clarke Quay being famous for being a historical riverside quay and nightlife venue, there are many ways to get here. The closest MRT stations here are Fort Canning (Downtown line), and Clarke Quay (Northeast line). The Fort Canning Station is to the river cruise while Clarke Quay station is on the other riverside.

I, however, got off at the Clarke Quay bus station on bus no.32 via nth Buona Vista Rd. as I’d to get there from the National Gallery of Singapore. Not knowing where to get my tickets, I glanced at the Water B Fort Canning stand and ended up there at first looking stupid.

But someone helped me out to the right spot. Here’s the exact spot from Google Maps. The cruise ticket booth is right beside Hooters – you’ll know when you get there ;)

A Couple and Old People

Talking of the people that actually get on the boat – at least when I went, most of them were senior tourists. That’s what I loved most about SG. They cater to all sorts of tourists. There’s Sentosa , SG Zoo and River Wonders , and so on for kids, but they are a whole lot of things for old people as well (such as the Hippo bus). And River cruise is one of them.

Apart from the elderly, there was a couple on honeymoon along with a guide, and some solo travelers like myself. With the photogenic structures in the backdrop, the guide took a bunch of pictures of the couple.

With around a dozen occupants, the boat was barely half-full and we all sat at the outdoor seating at the back. To our good luck, it wasn’t too sunny, making up for a peaceful ride.

Things to Spot on the SG River Cruise

The high-rising skyscrapers fascinated me so much, I missed taking pictures of historic structures here like the Old Hill Street Police Station. Keep in mind these structures and spot them on your bumboat ride!

Clarke Quay and Riverside Point

Quite obvious, isn’t it? You’ll begin at Clarke Quay. On one side are the colorful dine-in restaurants and on the other bank side has the Riverside Point shopping complex.

Read Bridge, Cavenagh at Fullerton, and Anderson Bridge

The vehicle underpass bridges were recent builds, but the enchanting ancients were labeled along with their build dates. We passed the Read bridge, Cavenagh Bride, and the Anderson Bridge each having unique structures and all over a century old!

Boat Quay and its shophouses

Boat Quay, similar to Clarke Quay, is another line of Singapore’s live music restaurants, pubs, and nightlife venues. Even the shophouses are similar and show a world apart from the skyscrapers right opposite on the other riverside.

Asian Civilisations Museum

While not wholly visible, any local guide (if with you) will point out its noticeable historic build. While it stands as a museum today, it was previously a government building in the 1980s – known as the Empress Place Building.

Fullerton Hotel

The 5-star hotel today opened only 21 years ago . But the neo-classical structure’s construction started almost a century ago which began as a General Post Office Building in 1924. Its columns and decorative build itself is a breathtaking view from the SG river cruise.

Singapore Merlion!

After the Esplanade Bridge’s underpass is where the river widens, giving a grand welcome to Singapore’s skyline and Marina Bay with the official mascot – Singapore Merlion! I’d been on the shores by the Merlion over a decade ago and it felt nostalgic to see it again.

The Skyline

Following the SG Merlion is Singapore’s skyline and Marina Bay view. The cruise takes a slow circle around the skyscrapers, DBS towers, and Marina Bay Sands. It never gets dull to have a look at the buildings and the river cruise’s close proximity makes it even sweeter.

Marina Bay Sands and ArtScience Museum

Circling by the Marina Bay Sands , it’s majestic up close. I walked by the bay later on, so I gave it little attention. What caught my eye were the Sands Expo & Convention Center, and the Apple and Louis Vuitton stores in front of Marina Bay . These stores were on the water and looked distinguished.

Though not as big as the other structures, they were just retail stores after all – and huge ones hovering over the water by the bay.

Last but not least, is the theatres on the bay Esplanade. This is one of Singapore’s largest performing arts centers and a popular venue for live concerts. Most people call it the durian building for its shape though it wasn’t intended by its architects.

Coming to the end of my Singapore River Cruise review, I’d say I’ve learned a lot more while writing this review. The Singapore river passing through Clarke Quay, Boat Quay, and Marina Bay witnessed history and the nation’s achievements over the years.

Secretly, it also proudly smiles at how far the country has come with its growth and looks at the world-class architecture around it. The River Cruise recognizes this and made it possible for the world to see in one trip.

Instead of spending an entire day, to catch a glimpse of each historical landmark, this cruise takes a smooth sail within an hour. Or if you wish to walk through all the landmarks here, the river cruise can make a sweet end to your day by taking you through time once again.

The trips are conducted in contemporary boats powered by electric motors, but they are disguised to seem like traditional bumboats (boats used in the region).

Singapore River Cruise Sightseeing Review

Of all the layover sightseeing and quick city trips we’ve taken, our day in Singapore was a favorite. Not only is it the cleanest city we’ve ever seen, but Singapore is also the most multicultural country we’ve ever been to. In other words, there is so much to do in this tiny island nation that it can be overwhelming.

So where do you start? With a Singapore river cruise and a hop-on/hop off bus tour . Of course, it’s impossible to see it all, but the bus and boat combination will give you a good overview of the city’s major highlights.

As any good Singapore travel guide will tell you, a river cruise in Singapore is one of the must-do attractions. You’ll be able to get up close and personal with Singapore’s landmarks as you drift down the river, right along with its bustling lifeboats and other vessels. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

Unless you’re staying in the outskirts, it’s likely that the HOHO bus stops near your hotel. Hop on and enjoy the ride! It’s narrated in multiple languages, and you’ll have the opportunity to see a lot and hear about the city.

Hop off when the bus stops at Clarke Quay, because that’s where your Singapore River boat cruise begins.

What to know before taking a cruise in Singapore

Two companies offer boat tours: Duck & Hippo River Tours and Singapore River Cruise. Although there are a few minor differences, they both have the same route, and both start from Clarke Quay.

Boat tours depart every 20-30 minutes and there is no need to buy tickets in advance.

If your bus ticket doesn’t include the cruise, buy your tickets at the waterfront.

Singapore River cruise review

As you wait for the tour to begin, take a quick look around Clarke Quay. This is a really intriguing area, a five block-long, colorful collection of high-end condos, boutique shops, tempting bars and international restaurants, repurposed from warehouses that were abandoned when the port was relocated.

Note to self: Must. Come. Back.

Our boat tour began with the guide explaining more about the quay. Only completed in 2006, Clarke Quay Festival Village is Singapore’s largest reclamation project to date. It’s a vast improvement over how it was 25 years ago when it was full of bumboats (cargo boats) jockeying for position in front of a dock full of warehouses.

Long story short, over the years those warehouses had turned the Singapore River into a polluted, smelly mess. This was obviously a health hazard, not to mention terrible for Singapore’s image. By 1977, the authorities had had enough. They spent the ensuing years revamping the area with the goal of turning it into a flourishing commercial and entertainment zone.

Even with those ambitious plans, though, they still wanted to preserve the area’s historical character. And so, they mandated that many of those warehouses should be preserved and repurposed. The old warehouses now house many of the businesses along the Quay, especially the larger restaurants and night clubs.

The captain headed upriver to Boat Quay, which at one time handled three-fourths of all the shipping businesses in the entire country. Nowadays, Boat Quay is a center for nightlife, and the preserved shophouses and offices have become pubs and restaurants with alfresco dining.

Directly behind Boat Quay are the cosmopolitan skyscrapers of the country’s world-class banking and financial sectors.

Fullerton Hotel

Further downriver, the historic, five-star Fullerton Hotel dominates the waterfront. This building is so grand that it would be impossible to miss. It wasn’t always a hotel, though. When it opened in 1928, it housed the General Post Office building, as well as an exclusive club and some government offices. I guess that explains its size.

Sigh. This is the type of hotel I’d like to become accustomed to staying in. What about you?

Bronze statues

If you stroll the Singapore Riverwalk, you’ll discover occasional bronze sculptures that depict scenes of days gone by.

One of my favorite sights on the cruise is in front of the Fullerton Hotel. It’s a sculpture of five naked boys in the middle of jumping into the water.

This work of art is an homage to the city’s heritage: The river was a popular swimming site until the city renovated its waterfront.

Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay

We had seen this building from our hotel the night before, glowing with brilliant blue lights. It wasn’t until we got an up-close, daylight view that we realized that it is actually a glass building with aluminum shades. It looks pretty weird, I think, and Singaporeans must agree; it’s been called everything from “the eyes of a fly” to “copulating aardvarks.”

We think it looks eerily like that love-it-or-hate it Asian fruit, the durian.

Marina Bay Sands

Our boat passed under a bridge at the mouth of the river and like magic, Marina Bay Sands Resort appeared on the far shore of Marina Bay.

Singaporeans lodged a lot of complaints while it was being built, but they have become proud of the iconic hotel and entertainment complex. Its facilities are constantly used and enjoyed by both Singaporeans and visitors.

Merlion and Merlion Park

The mythical Merlion is Singapore’s mascot and icon, so of course there’s a huge statue of one at the park (aptly called Merlion Park) where the river meets Marina Bay. A Merlion has the head of a lion and the body of a fish, which is very symbolic for two reasons: Singapore’s original name, Singapura, means “lion city” and it has always been a fishing village and port (“mer” means sea ).

The captain paused the boat in Marina Bay, long enough for passengers to take plenty of photos, before turning around and returning to the dock.

Dang. We should have taken selfies with the Merlion and Marina Bay Sands in the background.

There are also the enduring tales of older travelers who elect for extended world voyages as an unconventional retirement plan . (Though as onboard WiFi becomes more reliable, it's now possible to work remote from many cruise ships, as well.)

Whatever the reason, the allure of this mode of travel is strong. Why not unpack once, enjoying fairy godmother-like service, exemplary amenities, and always-changing views for months on end? Plenty of cruisers with time and money on their hands do exactly that, choosing an extended at-sea lifestyle for at least a portion of the year. Around-the-world cruises often run from early January through March or April, although new off-season itineraries are being introduced.

If an epic voyage across multiple oceans and continents fits into your future, be prepared to plan the trip far in advance. You can book world cruises in their entirety or join one leg of the journey for a shorter voyage.

Silversea’s 136-day sailing onboard their newest ship, Silver Dawn , will embark in Tokyo in January 2025. Called Controtempo , the cruise will sail in the opposite direction and season of many world cruises, taking in Japan and China in January before heading to Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, the Maldives , and Seychelles in February. The ship will spend the spring making its way up Africa’s Atlantic Coast—arriving in the Baltic Sea before cruising to Iceland and Greenland (an uncommon call for World Cruises), then tracing Newfoundland and New England to New York.

Most world cruises departing from North America head to sea in January, but in 2026 Princess Cruises will be offering 114-day World Cruises during the northern summer. Departing in early May from Auckland, New Zealand; or Sydney or Brisbane, Australia (mid-autumn in the Southern Hemisphere), the sailings are timed to arrive in Western and Northern Europe during the peak of summer, promising endless sunny days.

The sailing also has a number of long stretches of sea days for cruisers who like time to unwind and enjoy the amenities of the ship, Crown Princess . Some of the longer ocean crossings, like Brisbane to Bali and Colombo, Sri Lanka to Aqaba, Jordan will take a week or longer, while three other ocean crossings are at least four days.

Inside cabins start at $15,588 per passenger or from $22,248 for Princess Plus fares, which includes beverages, WiFi, and onboard gratuities.

Crystal’s land partnerships with parent company Abercrombie & Kent are front and center during their 2025 World Cruise , a 123-night sailing departing from Fort Lauderdale on January 7 onboard the Crystal Serenity —fresh off a complete refurbishment that reduced the total number of cabins, which now all offer butler service in every room or suite category.

With port calls in South America, Africa, India, the Middle East, and Europe, Crystal will offer guests a number of overland packages in partnership with Abercrombie & Kent—think multi-night side trips to the Galápagos Islands , Machu Picchu, the Serengeti, Taj Mahal, or Karnak Temple.

It will be the first year a larger Explorer Class ship, the Seven Seas Splendor , will undertake the world voyage, calling at 71 ports en route from Miami to New York in January 2027.

The routing will take the ship from the Caribbean to the Pacific coast of Mexico via the Panama Canal, Hawaii, several ports in French Polynesia (calling twice at both Moorea and Bora Bora), Australia, Southeast Asia, India, the Persian Gulf, the Eastern and Western Mediterranean, and Bermuda before arriving in New York.

Early bookers will get a long list of added amenities, including first class airfare, a pre-cruise gala in Miami, exclusive shoreside experiences in Panama City, Colombo, and Málaga , unlimited shore excursions, unlimited beverages, gratuities, transfers, door-to-door luggage service, and unlimited laundry, dry cleaning, and pressing. Oceania Cruises

Many world cruises depart in January and sail in the 100- to 140-day range, mostly wrapping up by April or May. Oceania’s 180-day world cruises last until midsummer, and are often “true” around-the-world sailings, ending in the same port they first embarked from.

Oceania’s 2025 Global Horizons sailing lasts a whopping 196 days onboard Insignia , roundtrip from Miami. The sailing includes several destinations in the Eastern Caribbean, and—extraordinary for a world voyage—a week of scenic cruising along the Amazon River . The voyage continues in South America before crossing the Atlantic to the remote islands of Tristan de Cunha, a British Overseas Territory, before making landfall again in Namibia , tracing the African coast through South Africa, Mozambique, and the French department of Mayotte (another rare stop for a cruise), island-hopping in the Indian Ocean before calling in India.

The sailing covers a lot of ground in Asia—Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, China, Japan, the Philippines, Brunei, and Indonesia—before cruising the west and south coasts of Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji, French Polynesia, and Hawaii. Crossing the Pacific to San Diego the ship then hops down the coasts of Mexico and Central America through the Panama Canal before returning to Miami in mid-July.

Oceania’s 2026 Around the World in 180 Days sailing is also roundtrip from Miami. Sailing westbound, the itinerary covers the east and west coasts of South America, the South Pacific, Australia, Southeast Asia, and much of the Middle East before transiting the Mediterranean to spend significant time in northwestern Europe and the Baltic Sea before crossing the far north Atlantic via Iceland and Canada before returning to Miami.

Starting fares for each of the world voyages currently range from $48,799 to to $57,999, including a number of value-adds like roundtrip airfare and airport transfers, plus a number of added onboard amenities.

I took a $30 ferry ride to Shell Island, an unspoiled 7-mile beach in Florida. It was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been.

Sometimes, there's nothing better than being a tourist for the day in your own state. As a Florida resident, I'm always looking for new places to visit without traveling far from home.

On a recent trip to Panama City Beach (PCB), Florida, I decided to visit Shell Island — known for its pristine beaches without souvenir shops, hotels, or restaurants — for the first time.

Like the millions of people who visit Florida for its beaches, I was excited to admire the water and enjoy the area's natural beauty.

To get there, I took the Shell Island Ferry, which shuttles visitors from St. Andrews State Park to the seven-mile-long island. The 15-minute ferry ride, which cost just under $30, transported me to a world completely different from PCB's typical tourism scene.

Here's what the ferry ride was like and why I can't wait to visit Shell Island's scenic beaches again.

The ticket to ride the Shell Island Ferry cost me about $28 after taxes and fees. When buying my ticket online, I was prompted to choose an hourly departure time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

To board the ferry, I entered St. Andrews State Park and paid a $4 admission fee as a solo driver.

I took a tram from the park to the dock, where the ferry was waiting.

Upon entering the park, a staff member instructed me to check in at the park's Pier Store. I waited there until a tram arrived to take passengers to the St. Andrews State Park marina, where the ferry would depart.

After a bumpy, 10-minute tram ride, we arrived at the docks and followed signs to board our boat .

We boarded the ferry and prepared for the short ride to Shell Island.

A few crew members, including a boat captain, greeted us as we boarded the ferry for the 15-minute ride to Shell Island.

Before taking off, staff members reminded us of the ferry's operating hours. We were told that ferries back to the state park would leave Shell Island at the bottom of the hour throughout the day.

I chose a seat on the ferry's top deck.

The ferry's lower tier had plenty of shade, but I rode on the top deck to enjoy the views. Though it wasn't very crowded when I went, I'd estimate about 50 people could ride the ferry at once.

The guides warned us that the last few daily return trips tend to fill up quickly, so we might have to wait for a ferry when it was time to head back to St. Andrews State Park.

The ferry ride was peaceful, and the views were beautiful.

During the peaceful 15-minute ferry ride, I took in all the sights, from offshore fishermen on the beaches to high-rise hotels along the PCB shoreline.

As a frequent traveler, I always love seeing the area I'm visiting from the water, and this affordable ferry ride was a great way to do so.

Shell Island was so beautiful that I felt like I was in another world.

After the ferry dropped us off at a jetty on one side of the island, it took about three minutes to walk along the wooden, boardwalk-style path to the beach.

I was amazed at Shell Island's pristine and untouched beauty, with white-sand beaches and coastal scrubland. There are no restrooms, stores, or shaded areas on the island, but after spending a few days in the thriving tourist town of PCB, it was nice to walk on quiet beaches where no hotels lined the shores.

In addition to strolling along the beach, guests can explore the walking trails or go snorkeling with their own equipment. Gear is also available to rent at the Pier Store.

It was easy to see how Shell Island got its name.

I've lived in Florida for almost eight years, and Shell Island's beach was one of the prettiest spots I've seen in the state.

I spent most of my time enjoying the beautiful beaches, where the number of seashells blew me away. I also noticed sand dollars and washed-up driftwood along the shoreline.

This area was truly a beachcomber's paradise, with lots to explore and find.

I spent the afternoon walking the beach and reading on a blanket.

I spent about two hours walking the beach and taking photos of the beautiful views.

Then, I sat on a blanket, quietly reading and soaking up the sun. There weren't many other people around, so it felt like an afternoon of true solitude.

Catching a ferry back to St. Andrews State Park was easy.

It was incredibly easy to get back to the ferry when I was ready to leave, which I appreciated since I was traveling alone.

When we first arrived at Shell Island, our captain gave us thorough instructions on how to return to the boat. There were also clear pathways between the dock and the beach.

I'd definitely take the Shell Island Ferry again.

Taking the Shell Island Ferry allowed me to see the island and most of the PCB area by boat. In addition to stunning views along St. Andrews Bay, I admired the island's beauty as I collected shells and took a few much-needed deep breaths in a pristine setting.

Shell Island was a beautiful spot I'd visit again, and the $30 ferry ticket felt like a worthwhile expense to see a unique part of the area.
