Review: The Spongebob Musical (UK Tour)

Review by Daz Gale

A cartoon favourite has travelled under the sea to hit UK shores for the first time as The Spongebob Musical washes up to tour all over the UK for the first time. A musical adaptation of an animated television show could be a hard one to get right so could this colourful, larger-than-life production ever manage to come across as anything more than just, well, simple?

spongebob musical uk tour review

For those who aren’t already familiar, he lives in a pineapple under the sea - Spongebob Squarepants first bounced on to our TV screens in 1999 entertaining generations of children (and adults) and spawning several movies along the way. The musical adaptation premiered in 2016 and headed to Broadway the following year. This UK tour marks the first time the show has been seen in the UK… sort of. A version of the show that aired on TV was actually filmed in the UK, but this is the first time Bikini Bottom has completely opened up for British audiences.

The premise of The Spongebob Musical sees Spongebob Squarepants and residents of Bikini Bottom very existence come under threat with the news a nearby volcano will erupt imminently destroying everything. Spongebob and his pals have to think fast to save the day and perhaps prove once and for all that he’s not just a simple sponge. Written by Kyle Jarrow, the musical effortlessly introduces audiences to the world of Spongebob, him and all the other characters, with an accessible ease making your previous knowledge of that world and the series unimportant. With a constant tone of family friendly fun, it never feels too terrifying for younger audience members and similarly never too childish for the *cough* older audience members. Full of funny lines and some hilarious visual gags, the whole thing is a complete joy.

Rather than have one composer of the songs in the show, The Spongebob Musical assembles some huge names from the world of pop and rock to each write a number for the show. Sara Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend and Panic! At The Disco are among the instantly recognisable names – with their own inimitable musical styles seeping into the songs they have created. The calibre of these songs is as phenomenal as you might expect with opening number ‘Bikini Bottom Day’ a pleasurable earworm and ‘(Just a) Simple Sponge’ an undoubted standout.

How do you bring such a colourful show to life on the stage? Quite simply, it turns out. Steve Howells set design is glorious from the moment you set foot inside the theatre. Grand and consistently fun, it is always visually pleasing and is among the better designs I have seen for a touring production in recent years. Equally fun is Sarah Mercade’s costume design, allowing Spongebob to look sponge-esque without having to actually don a big square sponge. One great aesthetic among both the set and costume design are the use of discarded items you might find under the sea with plastic bottles and rubber gloves incorporated brilliantly.

Tara Overfield Wilkinson directs the whole thing beautifully, towing the balance between a full blown Broadway musical and panto so precisely, the voice never waivers thanks to impeccable choices on stage. Fabian Aloise’s choreography brings performance numbers to life in stunning fashion and is particularly spectacular on the bigger ensemble numbers. One production highlight is the gorgeous lighting from Ben Bull, constantly atmospheric and at times evoking a rock concert (helpful in certain performance numbers) while an inspired use of sound sees cast members visibly use certain effects to accompany fellow cast members – used in hilarious fashion with Squidward in particular.

A couple of star names have come together to take on some of these iconic characters. Pop Idol runner up Gareth Gates is delightful with his note-perfect turn as Squidward, enjoying a true showstopping moment with his big song and dance number ‘I’m Not A Loser’. RuPaul’s Drag Race UK star Divina De Campo proves she was born to perform on stage with a spectacular performance as Sheldon J, Plankton. Remarkably loveable in the villain-esque role, she is always a force to be reckoned with, threatening to steal the limelight with just the smallest movement anytime she is on stage.

Irfan Damani delights as Patrick Star with his duet with Spongebob ‘(I Guess I) Miss You’ among the highlights. Chrissie Bhima gives a fantastically sweet performance as Sandy Cheeks, making the most of a role that in other hands could have faded into the background somewhat. Similarly, Sarah Freer gets a couple of fine moments as Pearl Krabs as does Rebecca Lisewski as the Mayor. The Spongebob Musical is a show where all of the cast work their socks off with a truly incredible ensemble, each getting their own moments to shine. They include a criminally small turn as Karen The Computer for the always amazing Hannah Lowther and a great performance from Reece Kerridge as Old Man Jenkins.

Of course, there is one performance I haven’t mentioned yet – and that is for good reason. To step into the square pants of such an iconic character can’t be the easiest of tasks – you have to nail the voice, the mannerisms and essentially become the legendary sponge. This is no problem for Lewis Cornay who is astonishing in the role. Having seen Lewis in previous shows, I was already aware what a phenomenal talent he truly is – as Spongebob, he is better than ever. It can’t be underestimated how difficult it is to sing while doing an impersonation and not using your real voice. The way Lewis managed to blend the two was truly remarkable. Showcasing his beautiful vocals and unrivalled characterisation, his was a tour-de-force performance with impeccable comic timing. There really was nothing simple about his performance here – in fact, it was rather miraculous.

It may have taken a while to come to the UK but The Spongebob Musical was truly worth the wait. This show is pure joy in theatre form – I struggle to think the last time I left the theatre with such a huge grin on my face. Not just one for the children or one for the Spongebob die-hard fans, this is a musical with something in it for everyone. Expertly staged and astonishingly performed (particularly the title role), Spongebob was a surprising delight and one I’ll be looking to catch again in the near future.

The Spongebob Musical is on tour across the UK until 9th September including a season in London this summer. Full dates and tickets from https://www.spongebobstage.com/

I n the great tombola of potential pull quotes that follow the debut of a new production, ‘better than expected’ and ‘it doesn’t need to be this good’ don’t perhaps crackle with quite the same fervour as some of the inevitable, nautical-flavoured gushing that will come for The SpongeBob Musical .

And yet, in a way, it’s probably amongst the loftiest praise one can afford a show whose brand recognition and popularity alone would likely have always guaranteed bums in seats, anyway. The ‘SpongeBob’ behemoth – which comfortably remains Paramount ’s most commercially lucrative and viable franchise, on merchandising alone – could’ve easily coasted (mild, tangential pun there) on delivering an adaptation as facsimile to the kind of family-favourite, pleasant-yet-pedestrian offerings of, say, Cbeebies ’ stage offerings.

Instead, what Tina Landau , Kyle Jarrow and a whole slew of musical talents first delivered on Broadway, was a critically-acclaimed, multi-Tony nominated postmodern treat. Fast forward a few years, and a certain global pandemic later, and Tara Overfield Wilkinson delivers up a reworked, tweaked, hyper-energised UK debut of a show that, yes, is a darn sight better than it had any right or need to be.

Following the antics of the very same cast of nautical misfits as the celebrated animated tv series, The SpongeBob Musical (itself, a slight reworking of the show’s former title) sees a calamity rumbling away on the shores (beds?) of Bikini Bottom, as a nearby volcano threatens to erupt and wipe out everyone’s ‘Best Day Ever’. Eternal optimist SpongeBob ( Lewis Cornay, in what ought be a star-making turn) puts his trust in friendship, good times, and the smarts of his science-y friend Sandy (a Texan squirrel, naturally) in setting out to save the day.

spongebob musical uk tour review

Soakin’ up the Success : First landing on screens back in 1999, the original SpongeBob Squarepants (pictured above, © Nickolodeon/United Plankton) has established itself as one of the most successful animated series of all time. It remains Paramount ‘s most profitable individual franchise, Nickolodeon ‘s highest-rated show, and over the course of its over two-decade run, won Emmy, Annie and BAFTA awards alike.

Like so much here, Jarrow’s book paints itself in gloriously broad, multicolour strokes, but there’s wit and nuance in there, too. Steve Howell ’s big, blue, beautiful, West End-worthy staging and Ben Bull ’s brilliantly implemented video work are peppered with puns and quips galore, at everything from the Government (’10 Drowning Street’) to COVID dictats (‘Stay indoors, Protect the kelp, Save lives’) and even a slew of pop stars (‘Tuna Turner’ and ‘The Spice Gills’, anyone?). And if, in execution, SpongeBob feels in places more akin to a hyperactive panto on fishy steroids than a conventional musical theatre outing, that it maintains the necessary energy levels to do so thoroughout, and indeed to honour the manic spirit of the source material in the process, is itself no mean feat.

“Like so much here, Jarrow’s book paints itself in gloriously broad, multicolour strokes, but there’s wit and nuance in there, too.”

Overfield Wilkinson, along with choreographer Fabian Aloise , deserve particular credit for keeping this adventure in Bikini Bottom so consistently funny and kinetic, even at times when its story and musical numbers threaten to languish on the same or similar beats. The duo dial every number here right up to eleven, and there’s invention at every step, too – from a beautifully realised spot of sponge puppetry (of all things) that helps craft solo number ‘A Simple Sponge’ into a genuinely moving spot of stagecraft, to the raucous, roof-raising gospel stylings of ‘Super Sea Star Savior’ or a gloriously, full-throatedly vaudevillian song and dance number for Gareth Gates ’ Squidward in ‘I’m Not a Loser’. Sure, some of the seeds of what is presented here are courtesy of the original Broadway creatives, but Aloise and Overfield Wilkinson deserve immense credit for injecting every step and song of SpongeBob with infectious energy and zest.

This is all enabled, of course, by a splendid company and ensemble who deliver the goods as intended. The aforementioned Cornay is outstandingly good – channeling the comedic, quirky oddness of the titular character with an effortless, likeably charm, whilst still finding time to showcase his heart, and belt out an incredible solo or two, to boot. He’s ably supported by Gates and Irfan Damani – the latter as SpongeBob’s lovable, dim-witted ‘bff’ Patrick Star – but it’s Chrissie Bhima as Sandy who regularly threatens to run away with proceedings. With a barnstorming command of character and physical comedy, and equally impressive vocals to match, Sandy’s story as scapegoat (‘scape squirrel’) for the calamities besieging Bikini Bottom offer some of the story’s most obvious yet touching undertones. Remembering that this is pitched primarily at kids,  including concepts such as ‘otherising’, and the perils of cheaply apportioning blame wherever possible, is a nice bit of social commentary and criticism for the show to include to its younger audiences.

“Cornay is outstandingly good – channeling the comedic, quirky oddness of the titular character, whilst still finding time to showcase his heart, and belt out an incredible solo or two.”

Elsewhere, Richard J Hunt is a lot of fun as an opportunistic Mr Krabs, whilst a talented Sarah Freer routinely pops up throughout to dazzle with a song or sassy interjection. Drag Race alum, Divina De Campo , is deliciously droll as the villainous, diminutive Sheldon J. Plankton, whose scheming with ‘wife’ Karen the Computer ( Hannah Lowther ) allows the show the chance to divulge into even some deadpan exploration of a dried-up relationship, rekindling some of its lost frisson. Speaking of Lowther, with so many of the company on multi-role duty, it speaks volumes to the talent on stage that she, along with the likes of Rebecca Lisewski, Reece Kerridge, Rhys Batten  and Eloise Davies all disappear into such disparate, hilarious roles as pompous politicians, cocktail-swilling doomsayers and even a school of hilarious, fawning sardines (arguably the show’s finest scene-stealers). Keep a keen eye open, too, for TV stalwart Richard Arnold as the newscaster reporting on impending disaster, and an ear for musical veteran Alex Gaumond ’s dulcet tones as the show’s Gallic-lilted narrator.

All of this comes with a big, volcano-sized disclaimer that The SpongeBob Musical will almost inevitably not be to everyone’s tastes. It’s big, loud (occasionally even noisy ) and, as mentioned, pivots around a plot that bears the mark of its Kids’ TV show origins. It’s very consciously (and welcomely) pitched at that very same demographic here, too.

“a quick glance at the list of names who delivered music for SpongeBob says it all – vibrant, diverse, fabulous and more than a tiny bit random.”

The SpongeBob Musical doesn’t reinvent the wheel. In fact, it kind of picks up the wheel, tells a quick joke about it, then tosses it aside to focus on delivering more silly, colourful, high-energised fun. And what fun it is – the soundtrack alone, comprising of songs from the likes of Cyndi Lauper , John Legend , Waitress’ Sara Bareilles and even Aerosmith – offers up a constant supply of fresh, toe-tapping or soul-searching bangers. In fact, in many ways, a quick glance at the list of names who delivered music for SpongeBob says it all – vibrant, diverse, fabulous and more than a tiny bit random. It doesn’t all completely gel together; it’s more a bricolage of inspired, tuneful fun than it is a seamless, cohesive musical whole, but there’s no denying it is utterly infectious and buoyant throughout.

So no, The SpongeBob Musical didn’t need to be this good. Yes, it is a whole lot better than perhaps anyone had the right to expect it to be. It isn’t perfect, and it likely won’t convert anyone shell-fishly going in expecting Chekov or Miller, either. But, for everyone else, it is a nautical jolt of pure, family-friendly joy, and one of the most relentlessly energetic, vibrantly staged and winningly performed original productions to come along in recent memory.

So slap on your flippers, keep a weather eye open for any errant jellyfish, and be sure to have packed enough spare change for a Krabby Patty or two (their price seems to be skyrocketing, even amidst a cost of living crisis…). Snorkel on down to Bikini Bottom and soak up a regularly dazzling, frequently funny new family favourite that we’ll hopefully still be seeing…

…wait for it…

75 YEARS LATER.

(…Google it, if you need to).

The SpongeBob Musical ? I’ll admit I went in with one eyebrow slightly raised. Did we really need a song-and-dance adaptation of a kids’ cartoon about a nerdy sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea? By the end of the show, I was nodding “yes”, singing along with the theme tune with hundreds of others, and thoroughly won over by its exuberant and contagious positivity.

I doubt I’m the only sceptical convert in the seven years since this surprise hit premiered. When it first transferred from Chicago to Broadway in 2017, The SpongeBob Musical was the first stage show based on an animated kids’ programme to make it to the Great White Way. It was a critical hit, too; tied with Mean Girls , it was the most-nominated show at the 2018 Tonys with 12 nods.

The premise is simple: SpongeBob SquarePants wakes up with the unshakable belief that every day could be the best ever. There’s nothing he takes for granted as he kisses his pet snail goodbye, goes to his job as a fry chef in a fast-food restaurant, before popping by later to his best friend’s house to marvel at the wonder of bubbles together. Sure, he’s a little sad that his boss doesn’t believe that he’s good enough for a promotion to management – but hey, there’s always tomorrow! That is until news of the impending eruption of a nearby volcano means that there’s only one day to prepare for the end of the world, and our spongey hero has to find a way to stop the destruction of his precious hometown, Bikini Bottom.

As the eponymous SpongeBob, Lewis Cornay is a delight. From his nasal tone to his stringy, bouncy physicality, he uncannily embodies the character we know so well, no boxy sponge costume necessary. The extended opening night applause after “(Not a) Simple Sponge” is completely warranted; Cornay’s belting, wide-ranging voice is excellent. Oddly, an array of popular artists provide the show’s soundtrack of original songs – John Legend, Brendon Urie and Sara Bareilles all get credits. The music is bubbly enough, but it does miss out on a uniform sound to bring it all together.

  • The Crown Jewels review: Royal comedy is lacklustre, but Al Murray and Mel Giedroyc still sparkle
  • Dr Semmelweis review: A maverick turn from Mark Rylance
  • The Pillowman review: A dark, twisted triumph despite lightweight Lily Allen’s one-note turn

The cast, however, is excellent. Though SpongeBob is our central figure, there’s no shortage of talent among the ensemble and supporting cast. Irfan Damani is loveable as Patrick Star, a dim-witted starfish, and brings a soulful baritone sound to his solos, while Sarah Freer – as spoilt, bratty teen whale Pearl – has a show-stealing vocal performance in “Daddy Knows Best”. Tom Read Wilson, best known for his receptionist duties on Celebs Go Dating , is a fabulous Squidward – a melancholy, four-legged squid with dreams of the stage.

Understandably, a lot of the content here is aimed at younger viewers. But the writing doesn’t mistake silliness for stupidity – it presents tough concepts like loneliness and prejudice in a simple, satisfying way. For the adults, there are fun Easter eggs at every turn. The warning graphics for the volcano eruption are (chillingly) similar to the red and yellow Covid lockdown notices, while the useless town mayor gravely tells her citizens that “mistakes were made” in the handling of the crisis. A talent show advertises performances from artists such as Cod Stewart and the Spice Gills, plus the volcano being made from plastic bottles highlights real-world environmental anxiety.

A musical based on an animated series about an underwater talking sponge isn’t going to be for everyone – the couple next to me mysteriously didn’t return to their seats after the interval. But the six-year-old sitting a row behind was giggling all the way through, as were plenty of adults. This is not just a simple show about a (not) simple sponge – it’s an uplifting, sweet tale about friendship and the power of community. Underestimate it at your peril.

Review: The SpongeBob Musical (Tour)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but i did not enjoy the spongebob musical as much as i thought i would..

spongebob musical uk tour review

Currently having its UK premiere, the show about everybody’s favourite square-panted sponge is based on the hit Nickelodeon cartoon. It features all the recognisable characters: a stoner-esque low confidence Patrick Star (Irfan Damani), a smart Sandy Cheeks (Chrissie Bhima) and the dissatisfied Squidward (Tom Read Wilson), as a volcano eruption threatens to destroy their beloved Bikini Bottom.

Lewis Cornay in the title role is a riot - the very embodiment of our nasally anti-hero. He “rocks” out on a ukulele donning a goofy smile and throws himself around with the type of energy typically reserved for animated skits. Without doubt, his performance is the highlight of the show.

The wider cast features a ridiculously well-cast Divina De Campo as the villainous Plankton and breakout star Hannah Lowther as his computer wife Karen. Lowther and the larger ensemble really put in a shift with quick changes and quick choreo - the yo-yo back and forth was enough to make me feel sea sick.

And partly, this is where SpongeBob falls down. The larger-than-life characters each have their own smaller plots that adds to the general chaos of the show. Pearl (Sarah Freer) wants to be a rockstar, Mr Krabs (Richard J Hunt), as ever, is out for cash and the Mayor (Rebecca Lisewski) just wants out. Between the jumbled dialogue, swamped by the large theatre, is a catalogue of songs that unfortunately never have chance to grow. With writing credits by Sara Bareilles, Panic! At The Disco and The Flaming Lips; there’s rodeo rhymes, raps and rock, but most only exist in the moment and had floated from memory before curtain down. The house band however are big fun and play a part in the story on stage.

Cornay’s rendition of “(Just A) Simple Sponge” is an exception and a stylish use of neon sponges against a black set really takes us to the heart of the character, whilst Squidward's "I'm Not A Loser" was a Broadway bonanza.

Credit really must be given to Director Tara Overfield Wilkinson and Choreographer Fabian Aloise who made the sea creatures pop. Squidward’s extra tentacles, shimmering sardines and SpongeBob’s rigid limbs especially were especially comical along with the foley sound - provided by members of the cast with squeaky dog toys and maracas on a side stage microphone.

Despite this, Kyle Jarrow's written jokes largely sunk. It was the physical comedy; the shaking as Pearl pounds into a conversation and the small details of Gary on a skateboard, that made the show feel special. Fans will be excited to see familiar memes and phrases come to life, lit by Ben Bull's triumphant disco lighting.

The updates to liken the impending doom of Bikini Bottom to the Covid-19 pandemic was surprisingly effective. Being placed under “Code Orange” the lockdown signage was eerily familiar and so were the character traits presented. Among the toilet roll thieves and binge drinkers were the xenophobes deniers that rile against outsider scientist, Sandy.

They also touched on another global disaster - climate change. Sarah Mercade's costumes are functional yet inventive takes on mainstream fashion - simply calling out for a cosplay (!). Whilst Steve Howell's set framed the stage with neon light bubbles - though unfortunately didn’t fill it with them till right at the end. Both used recycled plastics as an important eco statement.

With the SpongeBob musical, it's best not to get tide down with it's short-comings and just seas the opportunity for a bonkers night at the theatre.

'The Spongebob Musical' review — fun-loving production is the catch of the day

Read our review of The Spongebob Musical , the stage adaption of the iconic children's cartoon, in performances to 27 August at the Queen Elizabeth Hall.

Bea Maynard

With some musicals, you have no idea what to expect and making a beloved cartoon sea sponge into a live-action stage production must come with its range of difficulties. But, The Spongebob Musical swam through them and created a fun, loveable show that hooks you until the final splash.

Taking the Nickelodeon cartoon about a bright yellow, innocent sponge named Spongebob Squarepants, who lives in a pineapple (under the sea), was daring. How do you portray an obnoxious clarinet-playing squid? Or a teenage whale whose father is a money-loving crab? But this musical’s characterisation is idealistic. All the way to Spongebob’s driving teacher Mrs. Puff, each beloved character has been wonderfully adapted from the screen to the stage with their own musical flair. You fall in love with every crustacean, fish, and land mammal on stage, rooting for them throughout the surprisingly gripping storyline.

The production sees the residents of Bikini Bottom in a climate emergency. Mount Humungous, the nearby volcano, is about to erupt, throwing the underwater community into a state of mass panic. It’s up to Spongebob and his best friends, the scientist squirrel Sandy Cheeks and naive starfish Patrick Star, to hatch a heroic plan to save their sea home and prove Squarepants isn’t just a simple sponge. Kyle Jarrow has excellently written this plot suitable for any age. The blend of family-friendly humour, including hilarious one-liners and visual gags, with breathtaking talent from the whole company and entertaining visuals, means everything is smooth sailing for the entire family.

The opening song, "Bikini Bottom Day," is a quirky, catchy tune to introduce you to every character, making it an easy dive into the underwater world, regardless of whether you're a dedicated Spongebob fan or have been living under a rock like Patrick. In fact, the entire score is a delight, and with an all-star range of artists, including David Bowie, John Legend, and Cyndi Lauper, all adding their individual musical styles, you can see why each song is such an earworm!

There isn’t just a star-studded creative team. RuPaul’s Drag Race ’s Divina De Campo stars as the Krusty Krab nemesis Sheldon J. Plankton with outstanding wit and flair. Her loveable, villain-esque portrayal of the minuscule creature even features a wildly fast rap song called “When the Going Gets Tough” that cannot be missed. Gareth Gates and Tom Read Wilson usually share the uptight Squidward Q Tentacles role, but I saw understudy Blair Anderson, who thrived. He perfectly portrayed the characteristics of the grumpy squid who never gets his chance in the spotlight – until he does!

Every single subaquatic cast member delights in their role. Each work tremendously to seamlessly blend between various creatures, changing from anchovy to pufferfish before you even knew they left the stage. Hannah Lowther as Karen the Computer, Eloise Davies as Mrs. Puff, Rebecca Lisewski as Mayor, Theo Reece as Larry the Lobster, and more all get their moment to showcase their phenomenal theatrical skills individually and whilst working beautifully in unison.

Of course, it would be amiss not to mention the show's star (or sponge). I cannot fathom the difficulty of singing whilst impersonating a high-pitch voice, but Lewis Cornay is phenomenal. He brings the beloved cartoon character to life excellently with outstanding vocals and ideal comedic timing. His power ballad duet with Irfan Damani as Patrick Star called “(I Guess I) Miss You” was a real highlight. I never thought I’d be so invested in a sponge and a starfish having a heartfelt moment, but this show was a first for a lot of things.

One of my favourite elements was the incorporation of single-use plastic into Steve Howell's set and Sarah Mercade’s costume design. The live band’s wigs made out of plastic straws, cups, and old CDs, dresses made out of rubber gloves, and the volcano made out of hundreds of plastic bottles was an expert way to recycle the very thing that is so detrimental to the seas. I couldn’t help thinking the entire show was an overarching metaphor for plastic pollution, but maybe that is thinking too far into a musical about a sea sponge.

Overall, The Spongebob Musical blows all expectations out of the water. This is a production that is certain to leave you with a smile on your face, no matter how old you are. An astonishingly talented cast provides an expertly performed adaption that will have you applauding a squirrel in a spacesuit – don’t you just love musical theatre?

THE SPONGEBOB MUSICAL (UK TOUR) REVIEW: A DEEP DIVE!

by Lisa Waterman | Jun 23, 2023 | Lifestyle , Product Reviews

Photo of the SpongeBob Musical UK Tour

Welcome to ‘The SpongeBob Musical (UK Tour) Review’ where I will share all you need to know about the show, where to see it and what I thought!

So, let’s dive into the delightful underwater world of Bikini Bottom as it tours stages across the country this summer…

History of The SpongeBob Musical UK Tour

For years, the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants has captured the hearts of millions with its lovable characters, zany humour, and heartfelt storytelling.

SpongeBob SquarePants, the beloved yellow sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea, has been super popular since his creation by Stephen Hillenburg.

Stephen Hillenburg, a marine science educator and animator, credited many of the ideas he had for the show coming from an unpublished educational comic book that he wrote to help his students to learn about sealife.

Inspired by his love for marine life and a desire to create an entertaining yet educational children’s show, Hillenburg developed the concept of SpongeBob.  After he was brought to life, SpongeBob made his television debut on Nickelodeon in May 1999 in a series preview, before being officially premiered in July 1999.

This animated series followed the adventures of SpongeBob, his best friend Patrick Star, and the colourful residents of Bikini Bottom. The show’s clever humour, whimsical animation style, and endearing characters struck a chord with viewers of all ages, quickly garnering a devoted fan base.

Capitalising on SpongeBob’s popularity, Nickelodeon launched an extensive line of merchandise, including toys, clothing, and video games.

Later, the franchise expanded beyond the small screen with the release of several successful feature films . “The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie” (2004) and its sequel “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water” (2015) introduced SpongeBob and his friends to the big screen, delighting fans with their larger-than-life adventures.  Another film “The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run” was then released in 2020.

Furthermore, in 2017, SpongeBob made his way to Broadway with “SpongeBob SquarePants: The Broadway Musical.” The production garnered critical acclaim, receiving multiple Tony Award nominations and showcasing the enduring appeal of the character and his world.

Next, the beloved inhabitants of Bikini Bottom made their way to the UK, to debut in the West End.

This show is now on tour around the UK and coming to a theatre near you this summer.

The SpongeBob Musical (UK Tour) Review

The SpongeBob Musical (UK Tour) brings the beloved characters of Bikini Bottom to life in a spectacular and vibrant production. I’ve got to admit that I was unsure how this would work, but with the brilliant production design, catchy music, excellent performances, and an infectious sense of fun, it succeeds in capturing the essence of the animated series whilst offering a fresh and enjoyable theatrical experience.

Brilliant Production Design

The production design of The SpongeBob Musical is a visual feast for the eyes!

As soon as you arrive, the set is visible so you can start to take it all in before the show even begins.   It is a vibrant and imaginative portrayal of Bikini Bottom, filled with colourful and larger-than-life elements.

From SpongeBob’s pineapple home to the bustling Krusty Krab, the attention to detail is remarkable, capturing the essence of the animated series.

I particularly liked the inventive use of props and puppetry which adds an extra layer of playfulness, creating a truly immersive experience.   I don’t want to spoil it but watch out for the sponges…

Catchy Music

The heart of The SpongeBob Musical lies in its great, live music with the orchestra cleverly positioned on stage.

From the moment it begins, the audience is treated to a symphony of catchy tunes, blending original songs with familiar favourites from the animated series.

The compositions span a variety of genres, from pop and rock to reggae and gospel, each showcasing the skills of the talented cast and orchestra.   The only thing I would say is that in a few songs, where lots were singing at once, it was difficult to decipher some of the words, as they weren’t clear for some reason.  This did not detract from the overall brilliance, though.

The wave of original songs are written by a whole host of well-known songwriters including Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alex Ebert from Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I.

Prepare to tap your feet and sing along as the music transports you to the vibrant world of Bikini Bottom.   In fact, everybody was up and singing/dancing by the end.

Excellent Performances that Bring Characters to Life

The cast of The SpongeBob Musical really shine as they bring the beloved citizens of Bikini Bottom to life on stage.

Lewis Cornay plays SpongeBob SquarePants perfectly.   He captures the character’s charm and energy, embodying the essence of everyone’s favourite sponge!

All of the supporting roles playing iconic characters, including Patrick Star (Irfan Damani), Squidward Q Tentacles  (Gareth Gates or Tom Read Wilson), and Sheldon J Plankton (Divina De Campo), are portrayed with remarkable accuracy, too, delivering comedic brilliance and heartfelt moments.  They really bring the essence of each character to life.

The cast’s chemistry and dedication to their roles add an extra layer of depth and authenticity to the performance.

The casts chemistry adds depth to the performance

Nostalgia and New Twists

The SpongeBob Musical successfully balances nostalgia of the cartoon with fresh interpretations.   For example, the pirate starts and ends the show as he does in the cartoon, but there is a new storyline.

In the new storyline, a volcano is about to erupt and, therefore, threatens the very existence of Bikini Bottom.   As the characters race to save their home, there are many twists, providing surprises and a sense of discovery for fans.

The script mixes really funny parts with heartwarming moments, and the subtle themes of friendship and resilience, make it so relatable and engaging.

The positive message incorporating the power of optimism, importance of friendship and community spirit make Nickelodeon’s the SpongeBob musical a must-see.

A simple sponge from a humble home holds the fate of their undersea world in his hands, turning him into a most unexpected hero, along with his friends.

Audience Engagement and Pure Fun

One of the strengths of The SpongeBob Musical is its ability to engage the audience throughout the performance.

There are so many fun interactive moments, paired with clever stagecraft and clever costume designs which create an atmosphere of pure joy and entertainment.

The show’s infectious energy and humorous antics guarantee an unforgettable experience for everyone in attendance.

Final thoughts on The SpongeBob Musical (UK Tour)

Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the world of SpongeBob SquarePants, this stage musical tour promises to be a delightful and nostalgic journey under the sea and a great experience for all ages.

So, don’t miss the chance to immerse yourself in the enchanting world of The SpongeBob Musical.

It is a must-see musical!

Review: The Spongebob Musical, UK Tour, at the Opera House, Manchester

spongebob musical uk tour review

"Aye Aye Captain!"

"I can't hear you!"

"AYE AYE CAPTAIN!" "OOOOOOOOH!!!!!"

Sorry, couldn't resist it. How else are we to kick off a piece on The Spongebob Musical .

Yes, you read that right. I have bitten the bullet, swallowed my pride, and got a (admittedly cheap) ticket to see The Spongebob Musical.

Ever since Spongebob Squarepants, Patrick Star, Sandy Cheeks, Squidward Q Tentacles, Krusty Krab and more graced our screens in 1999 (!!), and still going, they have become a fixture in many a living room. And after many episodes, a couple of films (the 2004 one I remember watching a LOT back in the day), and ALL the merchandise, Spongebob and co made their stage debut in 2017, then got a LOT of Tony nominations in 2018 . Ultimately the Tony voters went with the "F*** Popularity" approach and made The Bands Visit the big winner instead. The Spongebob Musical closed after a run of around 300 performances.

I have to admit, I was extremely sceptical. Right up to making a decision to get a ticket to be honest. In the end, it was my colleague procliaming to our office she had bought me a ticket the night before I saw it that convinced me; at the very least, we could compare notes.

So, what does The Spongebob Musical have to offer?

In what could be an extended episode, Bikini Bottom is in danger from a volcano about to erupt. Can Spongebob and his friends save the town, and truly make it the Best Day Ever ?

In a way, the charm about The Spongebob Musical, is that it is unapologetic about what it is: a silly adventure for kids. The book is definitely not the strongest, and there are plenty of things in it that you would question being too far for even film logic.

spongebob musical uk tour review

The songs don't always meld well with the book either, though that could be from having multiple writers contribute a song rather than it having a single composer/lyricist. Artists such as Sarah Bareilles, Cyndi Lauper, Panic at the Disco, Plain White Ts, and even the one and only David Bowie have writing credits to the sponge.

You go for the characters, and the undersea world of Bikini Bottom that the fans have grown to love.

This show splashes camp colour everywhere, from the costumes (which are pretty on point to the show in all honesty), to the lighting and sets. And this is perhaps the surprising creativity of the show. It's definitely not high end, sure, (in fact, I would say definitely cheap if it had been any other show) but at the same time, it does have its moments. The volcano being made out of plastic bottles for one.

And Spongebob's big song, Not A Simple Sponge , had this almost shadow-puppetry effect with sponges creating various shapes was inventive and very imaginative for the audience. It got me saying at that moment "Oh that's cool" out loud - and I am a recently-turned 31 year old, I can only imagine the fun it invokes for a child.

The Spongebob Musical is of course, funny, as you would expect - but it's not in the book as such. The funniest moments for me actually come in the sound effects for when certain characters. Namely Mr Krabbs, his daughter Pearl, and especially Squidward.

I feel this is a good time to talk about these characters. And while I have Squidward on the brain, I'd like to start with him:

Because Tom Read-Wilson surprised me.

spongebob musical uk tour review

From one surprise, to another that turned out to be no surprise whatsoever: Divina de Campo ( Hedwig & the Angry Inch ) knocked the villainous Plankton out of the park. This kind of villainy, almost panto-level, is of course perfect for a drag queen, and though Plankton technically isn't in drag this time, she got to bring all her charisma and energy to the part. (Actually now I think about it, this could have been a Rusical right...?)

Chrissie Bhima proved why she is such a rising talent, playing the feisty Sandy Cheeks, but Lewis Cornay is also one to watch. He got Spongebob's bouncing optimism and innocence perfectly - and also, his voice! Trying to make a believeable impression of Tom Kenny's voicework is not easy, but Cornay did it brilliantly!

So what would I say is the outcome of The Spongebob Musical compared to my admittedly low expectations?

Well, I will be honest, I am in the mindset of "I've seen it, but I am no rush to see it again"

Better or worse than expected? I would say better - but I think that is through appreciating it knows what it is, plays on it, and doesn't apologise for it one bit. I think if I had held any higher expectations, I would be disappointed.

Kids will of course eat this up - and I think you will get the most enjoyment out of it with them. Die-hard Spongebob fans too will have probably already bought tickets, and there are bits and pieces for all fans including casual ones like myself to enjoy. Not as many direct references to the show as I thought though.

I will say though this is not for everyone. And if you are not a fan of the show, or don't know what you'll be letting yourself in for, I would advise giving this one a miss.

Not quite a miss-fire as such; definitely not perfect, especially as there were sound issues on the night, but Spongebob in his eternal optimism would still class it as the Best Day Ever .

Bold and bonkers - The SpongeBob Musical reviewed

The nautical nonsense of the cartoon characters has been transported to the stage

As anyone who has ever watched an episode of SpongeBob Squarepants on the small screen will know, it's a pretty wild ride. The nautical nonsense of the cartoon characters has now been transported to the stage as a musical and I can confirm it is just as bonkers if not more so.

For those thinking this sort of thing is just for the kids, then think again. The audience is packed with adults in their own cosplay-style interpretations of SpongeBob's bold yellow and pink colouring.

The yellow sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea clearly had a lasting impression on a whole generation of fans growing up who want to revel in the fun in adult life too. They are rewarded with a bold and bonkers musical with innovative costumes and stagecraft, which is bulging with original songs by some of the world's biggest music acts.

The show here at Manchester Opera House this week, is given an earlier-than-usual start time of 7pm to cater for those who are taking younger fans of the Nickelodeon characters. So it was disappointing on opening night for 'technical difficulties' to stall the start by a not insignificant 25 minutes.

spongebob musical uk tour review

It meant for me, along with plenty of other parents in the audience, having to leave before the end of the show with this being a school night I'm afraid. There were also a fair few technical issues with the sound on opening night with feedback and mics cutting out.

That aside, you cannot fail to appreciate the commitment of the cast who perform never less than full pelt to bring these zany adventures to life.

Leading man Lewis Cornay brings the squeaky naivety of SpongeBob to life in a lovely performance, alongside his trusty friend Patrick Star, played with charming innocence by Irfan Damani.

Meanwhile grouchy neighbour Squidward (my particular favourite in the cartoon series) is hilariously brought to life by Tom Read Wilson with a great stage outfit of extra squiddy legs. My seven-year-old boy was entranced with his every movement.

spongebob musical uk tour review

The plot revolves around a crisis in Bikini Bottom as a volcano is about to erupt. Villainous Plankton (brought to brilliant, dastardly life by Divina de Campo as you've never seen them before) is up to no good, trying to thwart the plans, and push the fishy community towards their own Chum Bucket restaurant instead of rival The Krusty Krab.

Bringing it all together are a load of rather silly, overblown songs that will make you titter. Highlights for me were SpongeBob's heartfelt (Just a) Simple Sponge with stunning sponge choreography (a phrase I never thought I'd write).

Then there's the pounding thud of Plankton's When The Going Gets Tough, complete with excellent dance grooves alongside their Karen and the SpongeBob company.

spongebob musical uk tour review

It all reminded me of a crazy 1950s B-movie in its styling which is no bad thing. While the plotline was able to convey topical messages that will prompt many a wry laugh from the older members of the audience too.

You will probably want to have had more than a passing knowledge of SpongeBob (either yourself or vicariously through your kids) to thoroughly enjoy this musical though. Otherwise you might wonder what wild fever dream you are seeing play out over two hours on stage here.

Review: ‘SpongeBob Musical’ a rambunctious winner for SC Children’s Theatre

  • May 7, 2024

spongebob musical uk tour review

“The SpongeBob Musical” burst onto stage this past weekend at South Carolina Children’s Theatre in downtown Greenville, featuring a terrifically talented cast with enough electrifying energy to power Fluor Field across the street.

This funny and rambunctious show, inspired by the popular Nickelodeon cartoon, spotlights a catchy score of pop rock songs to dazzle children and parents alike.

Carter Allen leads the cast as SpongeBob, the beloved ever-optimistic sea sponge who’s always willing to charge into action to help everyone living at the bottom of the sea in a town called Bikini Bottom.

spongebob musical uk tour review

Don’t worry, parents. The plot, of course, is not traumatic. Mostly it’s an excuse for the cast to deliver chipper songs, engage in assorted hijinks and blithely dance their troubles away. The dialogue is funny and fast-paced. One song follows another in quick succession.

The music is by a collection of familiar names: Cyndi Lauper, Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, David Bowie, Panic! At the Disco and more.

The production’s creative team has accomplished something extraordinary. Hattie Claire Andres directs this cast with vitality and a headlong momentum. Not only does the show never lag; it hardly ever stops to catch its breath.

Grayson Anthony’s extensive choreography is a marvel of exuberance, styles, and complex coordination. There’s even a tap number. Instead of masks or full-body costumes, the costume designs suggest the various characters from the cartoon. Adam Martin has coordinated and created a stunning and colorful array of costumes.

Taylor Marlatt is responsible for the tight and polished music direction.

Genesis Garza’s appealing scenic design favors elements of a tiki bar dotted with brightly colored anemones and other sea creatures.

Jubilant showstoppers

The cast of more than two dozen is uniformly excellent. There are some standouts, of course, but this musical often involves the entire ensemble in jubilant showstoppers.

The musical spotlights some terrific vocals.

Allen, as SpongeBob SquarePants, is a huge talent, putting in a nimble tour-de-force performance as he effectively mimics the helium voice, gestures and laugh of his irrepressible character. He greets the world with manic joy — “Hello sky! Hello flowers! Hello Bikini Bottom!” — later proclaiming, “It’s the best day ever!”

Javy Pagan is endearing as the genially daffy Patrick Star. Adell Ehrhorn, with a soaring voice, plays the tough-talking twangy Texan Sandy Cheeks. Mitchell Smith is wonderful as the gloomy Squidward Q. Tentacles, delivering the song “I’m Not a Loser” with tons of pizzazz.

Cody Cobb, as “evil genius” Sheldon Plankton, sings with a resonant baritone and demonstrates some remarkable verbal dexterity in the rap number “When the Going Gets Tough.” Rick Connor brings his usual polished and professional commitment to the role of the crabby, money-hungry Eugene Krabbs.

Andre Webb is the highly emotional reporter Perch Perkins. Anna Bowman, as Patchy the Pirate, serves as a kind of hearty warm-up act. Fawn Clark, Carley Tomlinson and Mary Evan Giles are the dynamic rock trio known as The Electric Skate.

The rest of the cast is likewise superb. This dynamite “SpongeBob Musical” continues through May 19.

It’s a must-see show. To quote SpongeBob, you’ll have “the best day ever.”

  1. Review: The Spongebob Musical (UK Tour)

  2. The SpongeBob Musical (UK Tour) Review

The SpongeBob Musical doesn't reinvent the wheel. In fact, it kind of picks up the wheel, tells a quick joke about it, then tosses it aside to focus on delivering more silly, colourful, high-energised fun. And what fun it is - the soundtrack alone, comprising of songs from the likes of Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Waitress' Sara Bareilles ...

The UK Tour of SpongeBob Squarepants The Musical invites us all to dive deep down into the depths to visit a pineapple under the sea and all of its inhabitants in this new production of this all-singing, all-dancing stage show.. Diane Parkes. Birmingham. 14 April 2023. Hugely successful as a television series, the characters of SpongeBob SquarePants come to the stage in this lavish, multi-coloured and somewhat zany musical. 9. Review: The SpongeBob Musical (Tour)

Currently having its UK premiere, the show about everybody's favourite square-panted sponge is based on the hit Nickelodeon cartoon. "The SpongeBob Musical" burst onto stage this past weekend at South Carolina Children's Theatre in downtown Greenville, featuring a terrifically talented cast with enough electrifying energy to power Fluor Field across the street.
