Reasons to Visit the HARIBO Factory Store in Bonn, Germany

visit haribo factory bonn

Germany, the land of enchanting castles, beer, festivals, Christmas markets, and much more.  But, did you know they’re known for something sweet and delicious?  Candy lovers, this post is for you, specifically gummy bear lovers out there!

Now, I normally don’t get too excited about candies, but I specifically put the HARIBO factory store on my list for a reason (we’ll get to that in a bit).  I thought this deserved its own post.  It was the perfect ending to our day trip to Bonn (psst, click here to read up on our day trip to Bonn).

              about haribo.

Before we get to the reasons why you should visit the HARIBO Factory store, here are some interesting tidbits about the famous German company:

  • Hans Riegel founded HARIBO in Bonn, Germany, in 1920
  • The name HARIBO was derived from the founder’s first two letters of his first and last name and the first two letters of Bonn.   HA ns  RI egel,  BO nn.  Nifty, huh?
  • The company is still family-owned
  • Locations can be found here on their  website .  They have several locations in Germany.
  • I was really hoping for a tour, but sadly, they do not offer factory tours, even before Covid.  See their response on their website  here. (tip: view the site on Chrome and let the site translate the website for you).
  • I mean, you have to visit the birthplace of HARIBO, at least while in Bonn.

Reasons to Visit the HARIBO Factory                                  Store

  • The Factory store (though not the original store) is located close to the original Factory in Bonn.
  • You’re in the city where the HARIBO gummy bears were invented
  • The prices for the gummies are CHEAP ( I like that word), or rather, low in price!  I mean prices for a 200g bag of gummies were around 0,59 cent Euros to 0,85 cent Euros, depending on the flavor.  I’ve easily seen these size bags at Aldi for around 1 Euro or more.
  • It’s in Bonn, the birthplace of the one and only Beethoven!
  • The VARIETY!!!  There are so many flavors I have never seen before, some from other countries!  I even saw a flavor from the U.K. (see below for the Wine Gummy, yes, wine gummy; I don’t know if it’s really wine inside the gummy, but I’ll find out soon!)
  • The store also sells other candies besides gummies, like jelly beans, sweet and sour string candies, and more!
  • The souvenirs are pretty nifty too!
  • There are clean restrooms inside the store (it’s free)
  • It’s a fun stop in Bonn for all you candy lovers out there
  • Want to know how the gummies are made? Check out their production page here .

 final thoughts.

There you have it, some fun reasons to add the HARIBO Factory store to your Bonn list.  Is it worth the visit?  Only if you have a sweet tooth and you have a desire to visit a gummy bear store.  Plus, it’s a good excuse if you want to bring your kids along to a candy store full of sweets while in Bonn; I mean why not?   It wouldn’t hurt to visit one of the stores . The factory store itself is close to the original factory, and their prices are pretty sweet!  It’s not a bucket list location, but it’s a pretty neat stop if you are tired of sightseeing for the day and need a sweet break.

I had a very excited husband who was literally my kid in a candy store.  I think he was more excited about the low price and variety!

My kids are a bit older and were just there for the experience, lol.  I still had fun visiting the store; it’s not often you get to visit one of the OG HARIBO stores, especially in the city it originated from.

thank you for your post. it is a worth for me.

Glad I could be of help, I hope you enjoy visiting!

Hello! Thanks for the post. Is it possible to visit the Factory?

Hi! I think you can only visit the Factory Outlet store, but not the actual factory where they do the production of the products. Here is what I found on their website: https://www.haribo.com/de-de/shops-fabrikverkaeufe (link) Can I visit the production of HARIBO? Extremely high and internationally standardized hygiene and quality standards apply to the manufacture of HARIBO products. Therefore, all HARIBO production plants worldwide are certified according to FSSC 22000 (Food Safety System Certification 22000), which enjoys a high level of acceptance in international trade and stands for the highest level of quality and safety standards along the entire production and supply chain. Unfortunately, this also means that in order to protect the entire production and filling processes, no groups of visitors are allowed to be guided through the factory halls. We therefore ask all HARIBO fans for their understanding that we generally do not offer any factory tours.

I hope this helps!

Thanks for the post. I’m attending a meeting in Bonn and will definitely find time to visit another “birthplace” next to Beethoven’s. It also helped in deciding on what to bring home to my folks as souvenirs that are originals from Bonn.

I’m so glad this was helpful! Thank you for reading my blog posts! I hope you enjoy visiting Bonn! It really is a beautiful city!

With more flavors than you could imagine and far cheaper prices than the United States, you might as well try all the flavors that catch your eye. However, my recommendation is to avoid the "wine gummies" boasting zero alcohol and no discernable alcohol taste; they're gimmicky and a waste of time. Actually, I think I'll have to do a blog post just for the Haribo store... Only 4 stars because I expect more from a flagship store. It wasn't exactly the "experience" I had hoped for and could be more interactive/engaging.

You better Hari up and try some Haribo Candy. They actually make some pretty good candy. When you're in Europe when you get those fizzy Cola bottles for example, now that's what I'm talking about. Very good stuff. Elsewhere in the world not quite so much. But still they make some pretty damn good things and are a high-quality company.

Hans Riegel Bonn, Haribo, The novelty candy brand that has captivated my heart, imagination for what candy could be and never fails me when I need a boost. For being the source of the product this store does not fail to disappoint. From their bulk bags of prodct to their mix and match bins to their short history museum for the children this brightly cklored candy shop is full of amazement. The staff is very friendly and courteous and is very helpful. English and German and some other languages are spoken here to orient the world traveler or local national. The retail store is a hop, skip and a jump from the U-bahn station and is in an interesting neighborhood. The balla balla /balla stix or cowboy ropes are my favorite candy for as long as I can remember. The products are fresh and plentiful. Was able to stockup and gave myself a little candy coma on my first visit.

Had such a great time here!! We are all HUGE fans of haribo so we had to come and check it out. We had a great time and have a bag full of gummys to take home! :)

SUPER NOMS! I have been a fan of those delicious gummibärchen since I was a child, and so visiting the Haribo factory was a bit of a dream come true for me, despite that it came many years after the fact. Now I am a vegan, so I can't eat the majority of the gummies they make, although I was super stoked to find out they do make gelatin-free candy... if only they'd apply that across the board! My friend and I walked away from the factory store with about $30-40 of candy each for the price of maybe 10 euros each. And it's not just candy they have there, but all kinds of gifts and souvenirs with the famous smiling yellow bear. There's also a small museum section with special edition gummies on display, the Haribo car, a big yellow frowning Haribo bear, and more. One thing, there's no doubt about it: Haribo macht kinder froh und erwachsene ebenso!

Gummies! I would end the review there, but Yelp won't tell me that I'm smart unless I write more, and I personally look to Yelp for validation. You have to go here, even if you aren't the biggest fan of gummy products. I had no idea it was founded in Bonn, but then again, I don't think I have ever thought about Haribo long enough to wonder where it was from. The name is an acronym formed from Hans Riegel, Bonn (how long did it take you to figure out which letters spelled 'Haribo'? Be honest; this is a shame-free zone.) I bought a few buckets of different things and made them a cheap way to impress my co-workers and remind them that I'm awesome (the magic power of sugary treats that stick in your teeth). On a random side note, someone swiped one of the four buckets I put in the break room. Those were community buckets. Pigs. Anyways, go here. There's another Haribo store in the center of Bonn that has two floors and a history of Haribo (I didn't read it, but it is there, printed on five or six feet of yellow wall). I'll stop here; Yelp just affirmed my worldly value.

Photo of Matthew L.

My friend and I have always been Haribo fans. So, when she and I planned our trip to Germany, the Haribo-Shop Bonn was very high on our list of places to visit. The Haribo factory is like a child (or grown-up)'s dream come true. Everybody loves candy, and the Haribo factory definitely will satiate anyone's sugar craving. Lidl is also near by! So if you're doing grocery shopping, you can also do your candy shopping a few streets down. The have tubs and tubs full of different kinds of gummis, but the cool thing about this place is the pick-your-own-candy station (by the kilogram)! Grab a bag and a pair of tongs, and grab what you want. From gummi bears, to sour straws, to sour belts, to lemon drops -- just about anything you can imagine and they'll have it! There isn't much Haribo you can buy in the US -- it's all in Germany ... and it's ALL in this store! This place is sugar rush central. I didn't expect to buy a whole lot, but when I left, I left with a few large tubs of candy and bags more of it. Sure, it weighed down my suitcase -- but it was worth it. The candy was so fresh and reasonably priced, but most importantly, it was stuff that I couldn't find in the US. If I wasn't on a time crunch, I would spend hours here :)

Photo of Sydney M.

I want to live in this store. The selection is extensive and the prices are unbelievable. I laughed as I saw dozens of people leaving with shopping carts full of gummies. Then I became one of them. I was literally one bag of gummies away from my suitcase being too heavy to check on the plane without additional charges. But I have no regrets. If you aren't going to be able to visit again for a while, seize the day. Buy all the gummies you can because this place is heaven. You'll be able to purchase happiness for next to nothing. If you later find yourself buried in your candy purchases wondering what you were thinking, just enlist your friends to help. There are many flavors and mixes that you definitely can't find in other countries, making them an even better treat.

This place is awesome! I mean talk about a kid in a candy store!! However, it's just not fair that I got to experience it versus the true fat kid. I say this because I'm not really a candy type of gal... I like savory, not sweets. However, when seeing this on my Yelp app, I just had to check it out! This place is like a grocery store, however the aisles are filled with gummy treats! I didn't even know that most of these gummies existed! While individuals were literally filling up their full size shopping cart with candies, I opted for a small .75 cent bag of the classic gummy bears. I also did do a mini grab bag of the "pay by the weight" type of candies... There, I grabbed one sour belt in each flavor.. Two things that really caught my eye were 1) CHEAP CHEAP prices... stock up like it's going out of style, folks!! 2) Bags of gummy bears in the individual flavor! This is awesome!! For all you peeps out there that ignored a certain color, well just opt for a whole bag of one flavor!! I am definitely coming here to stock up before I visit the family in Seattle!

This place is ridiculous. First of all, the first thing you smell when you walk near the front doors is an amazing smell of gummies, tons and tons of gummies. Not only that, but the whole store (about the size of your average euro grocery store) is full of wonderful Haribo goodness. I wanted to come here just to visit the store, but I didn't realize until I got here that the prices are that low. We're talking about a standard size of goldenbaren for .60-.70 euros. If you want them in bulk, they have boxes in the Kg's you can take. They sell pretty much everything in multiple quantities, from small bags, to large bags, to buckets, to gift packs. They even separate the flavours of gummy bears for the people that "really like the red ones" or "don't like the white ones". That's awesome. As Sydney M. said, yes I saw a ton of people carrying huge boxes of gummies out, but how can you not? It was like supermarket sweep (sorry, this may be a 80's North American tv reference) and all I could do was grab every bag I hadn't had before. Needless to say, I came out with a box filled with goodies and most likely a problem when I check into my flight back to Canada...

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Where to watch movies for free in Moscow this summer

People watching a movie in a Pioner 24-hour open-air cinema in Gorky Park.

People watching a movie in a Pioner 24-hour open-air cinema in Gorky Park.

Temporary cinemas will be popping up across Moscow very soon, starting from July 16. All of the spots are brilliant examples of either constructivist or avant-garde architecture, so expect striking settings. A selection of classic Soviet films will be aired using cinematic equipment from the last century. All the screenings are free although online registration is required beforehand, while there will also be guided tours of the spaces, organized by the “Moscow through the Engineer's Eyes” company.

Registration will be open soon at mos-kino.ru

Bread factory

Bread factory 9 / Bezik (CC BY-SA)

Following the success of former factories transformed into art spaces (VinZavod, Arma, Trekhgornaya manufacture), Khlebzavod (“bread factory”) No 9 is one newly opened joint that is attracting creative types from all over the city. The movie Time! Forward! will be screened in the building’s boiler room on July 16. It follows workers from the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, one of the largest steel companies in Russia, and is based on a novel by Soviet writer Valentin Kataev.

What’s more, Khlebzavod is a monument to constructivist architecture. Where better to watch such a film?

Novodmitrovskaya St. 1

Roof of the Narkomfin Building

Narkomfin Building / Kirill Zykov/Moskva Agency

The Narkomfin Building was originally designed to house high ranking employees at the Commissariat of Finance. It was built by architects Moisei Ginsburg and Ignaty Milinis. Also a fine example of constructivism, it’s currently in a state of disrepair, locked down, and fairly difficult to get into - which is like a red flag to a bull for more adventurous types.

However, on July 30 the place will be opened up and people will be welcomed onto the roof to watch the film Faith and Truth.

Novinsky Blvrd . 25b1

Khrushchyovka courtyard

Cheremushki district / Alexander Scherbak/TASS

A courtyard located in the 9th experimental block of the Novye Cheremushki district will turn into an outdoor cinema this summer. Cheremushki is the first district where Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchyov decided to build the iconic Khrushchyovka apartment blocks in the 1950s. As a result, thousands of Russians were given their own pads after decades living huddled together in communal apartments known as kommunalka .

Cheremushki is the adapted film-version of Dmitry Shostakovich’s operetta and will be shown here on Aug. 6. The organizers of the multiple screenings - the Moskino cinema chain - say they will revive the Soviet tradition of neighbors meeting in courtyards for a good old tongue wag. There will also be a guided tour of the block.

Address to be confirmed at mos-kino.ru

Pioneers Palace

Pioneers Palace / Legion Media

If you want a slice of the postwar Soviet avant-garde style, head to the Pioneers Palace at Vorobyevy Gory. Pioneers Palaces were youth centers for sport, creativity, and hobbies for Young Pioneers (a communist organization for children) during the Soviet Union. There were dance classes, martial arts, drawing, and many other activities.

To Love a Man , a movie about two young architects building a new town in Siberia, will be shown here on Aug. 22. There will also be a lecture about building experiments in the 20th century.

Kosygina St. 17b2

A secret place

A secret place / Press photo

The last cinema venue remains a secret. On Aug. 27 there will be a screening, but at the moment no one knows where. Information will appear on mos-kino.ru but those who attend all four screenings above will be able to guess the last location.

A talk about architecture and Soviet history also will be hosted here.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

visit haribo factory bonn

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

visit haribo factory bonn

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

visit haribo factory bonn

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

visit haribo factory bonn

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

visit haribo factory bonn

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

visit haribo factory bonn

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

visit haribo factory bonn

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
