More A12 closures planned as Highways tells drivers told to avoid 'unnecessary' trips

M otorists have been told to avoid unnecessary travel as construction work on the A12 enters a new stage of the project. The reconstruction scheme has been ongoing between Marks Tey and Stanway for several months and National Highways say they are now entering the final stages of the project.

National Highways say that in order to be complete in the summer, they need to rebuild the final lane of the southbound carriageway between J26 (Stanway) and J25 (Marks Tey). They also need to rebuild the southbound exit slip road at J25 and resurface both the north and southbound carriageways.

A lot of the work will be done within coned-off sections and working areas, but there will be some weekend lane closures and diversions over the coming months. National Highways say this is "to let us safely complete work in the hard-to-reach areas around J25 and on the southbound exit slip road".

A spokesperson said: "During most of this upcoming weekend work, the A12 will remain open to traffic but you may see some changes to the road layout around junction 25. While this work has been carefully planned and sequenced to minimise disruption and reduce the impact on the local road network, there may be some diversions and additional congestion in the area. So please allow more time for your journey during this period.

"At the end of our weekend work later this summer, we’ll need one full weekend road closure between the Junction 25 southbound exit slip road and junction 25 southbound entry slip road while we work on the road underneath the Marks Tey junction.

"We understand the impact that full road closures can have on motorists and the local community. We aim to reduce these impacts as much as possible. Therefore, we have grouped together all the remaining work which will need road closures. These will all be done in one single weekend towards the end of this project. While we understand closures can be disruptive, we’re planning to make these changes as quickly as possible, and with the least possible disruption."

What has been done between marks tey and stanway.

The old concrete road surface on the northbound carriageway has been rebuilt along with lanes two and three on the southbound carriageway. These rebuilt sections have temporary road surfaces until final resurfacing is completed at the end of the project.

It is done this way to ensure the final road surface is not damaged during construction work. It maximises the life of the road surface and ensures a better quality of finish.

The old concrete road surface has been recycled by using the old material to make the foundations for the new stretches of road New kerbs, drainage and safety barriers have also been installed.

Working continues at the construction site of the southbound entry slip road at J26 in Stanway. It's closed 24/7 for approximately four weeks whilst work continues.

Diversion routes have been put in place after the A12 was shut due to a police incident in Colchester this morning (October 10). The incident happened at Junction 26 where Essex Police were called at 11.15am following welfare concerns about a man on a bridge.

The force has confirmed officers are at the scene. The A12 is closed in both directions between Junction 25 and Junction 28 and has been since 11.40am, according to INRIX traffic. Essex Live is bringing you the latest updates on the incident. You can read more by clicking here.

An Essex Police spokesperson said: "We are currently on scene close to Junction 26 of the A12.Officers were called shortly after 11:15am following a concern for safety of a man on a bridge.

"The road has been temporarily closed whilst officers remain on scene." It is unknown how long the closures will be in place. However, National Highways have published information about diversion routes in both directions while the road closures are in place.

Northbound diversion route

Motorists are advised to:

• Exit the A12 northbound at J25 Marks Tey and follow the B1408 through Copford and Stanway to the B1408/A1124.
• At the roundabout take the first exit, continue on the A1124 to Stanway.
• Continue on the A1124 through Stanway and bear left onto the A133 to Colchester.
• Continue on the A133 through Lexden to the roundabout with the A1232.
• At the roundabout take the first exit on to the A1232 for Ipswich and re-join the A12 at J29 Crown Interchange.

Southbound diversion route

• Exit the A12 southbound at J29 Crown and follow the A1232 to the twin roundabouts with the A133.
• At the roundabout take the second exit on to the A133 and continue through Colchester and Lexden to the A133/A1124 roundabout.
• At the roundabout take the first exit onto the A1124 and rejoin the A12 at J26 Eight Ash Green.
