Deaf Havana have announced their 2023 UK headline tour. Kicking off in Leeds at Uni Stylus on 22nd March, the duo then hit Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Birmingham, Southampton, Oxford, Exeter and Brighton before wrapping up in Cambridge at the Junction on the 3rd April. Tickets are available from Friday 9th December at 10am.

Speaking of the tour, Matty Veck-Gilodisaid, “We're very excited to be heading back on tour to a bunch of places we haven't been to in a very long time! It was incredible to come back to playing live this year, we had so much fun creating and performing a show that we loved and we can't wait to craft something different and special for these shows next year.”

Earlier this year Deaf Havana released their hotly tipped album, The Present Is A Foreign Land. Spanning 12 tracks written and performed entirely by brothers James and Matty Veck-Gilodi, the album explores themes such as imposter syndrome, conquering arduous life obstacles and self-discovery. These include previously released singles Nevermind, On The Wire, Kids and Going Clear. Listen to The Present Is A Foreign Land here.

In 2020, Deaf Havana were ready to go their separate ways after a decade together, but then the pandemic hit and they had no choice but to stop. Despite the band making the tough decision to call it a day, Matty continued to write songs and it was this that brought him and brother James back together after a turbulent few months.

The two-piece decided to continue as Deaf Havana and holed themselves up in a studio in Hastings with producer Mike Horner (Hot Chip, Jess Glynne, YONAKA and more). The result was The Present Is A Foreign Land; a mature and accomplished body of work.

After headlining the Rock Sound stage at Slam Dunk Festival earlier this year, the band played a string of instore shows to celebrate the album release before heading out on a 5 date UK tour last month including The Roundhouse in London. Deaf Havana have risen through the ranks during their time as a band, earning themselves coveted accolades including three Top 10 albums in the Official Charts with Rituals, All These Countless Nights, and Old Souls. 2018 saw them play their biggest headline show to date at Brixton Academy, alongside appearances at festivals such as Reading & Leeds, Mad Cool and Pukkelpop.

Deaf Havana have announced details of their biggest UK tour to date.

The band, who released their second album ‘Fools And Worthless Liars’ in November last year, will play eight shows across the UK.

Speaking to NME previously about the album, the band said that it feels “more like their debut” as it is their first full length album without former singer Ryan Mellor .

They also explained the album’s title, with drummer Tom Ogden saying: “I think everybody does and says stupid things and this is our way of acknowledging that in ourselves. Basically if you say you’re not a fool or a liar, then you definitely are.”

Deaf Havana are scheduled to play a large number of UK festivals this summer, including a spot opening the Main Stage at this summer’s Reading And Leeds Festivals .

Live reviews

This Norfolk based band have been on the rise in recent years, including their first American tour this year. They can pack out huge tents at festivals, with hundreds cramming in to hear their favourite songs, it’s always great to hear so many singing “we’re all fools and worthless liars’ along with lead singer James. This lyric is from my favourite song giving their 2011 album it’s name. Deaf Havana are also able to hold the attention of an audience on the main stage, and of course at their headlining shows with so many fans who’ve been with them from the start. A newer favourite is ‘22’, catchy and fun but with real raw emotion which you can hear even more in the live performances. The great bonus of seeing them live on their own tour is the jokes and stories that come with so many guys being on stage, which in itself is humorous when you see them playing the smaller venues! You do wonder if someone will get pushed off! This band bring together great music and a great sense of reality. These are real guys, living real lives, in the real world. They are not sucked in to the media frenzy and hoping for fame. That is not why they make their music and they won’t let that decide what their music should sound like. They will continue to be the people they were born to be, and that includes bringing us great music!

The show is started with a not very good two host bands. The main issue was a very loud music. Some equipment was not set properly which create not clear sound. Deaf Havana started with the great intro and with a first song on his last album Ashes, ashes. After this the to the show was coming big energy. They played also songs from previous albums. The atmosphere was getting better and better and when singing all people together that was the main moment. The band played perfect with great loud of music and clear guitars. The visual show was amazing with great light and colourst. I think that concert was one of my best till yet in my life. Yeah we can talk about because I am a fan but I felt great energy and I had great time. Thanks to this great band. See you soon.

Deaf Havana are by far my favourite band so seeing them live was so beautiful, they didn't disappoint at all. They played nearly all of my favourites and the lighting was so beautiful throughout the show. They're really funny as a band so seeing them joke around with each other was fun to watch, wish I could relive that night

An absolute belter of a gig from start to finish!! Its rare to see such pure heartfelt gratitude but when james stood on top of the sound deck halfway through you could clearly see how much the fan cheers meant to him!! Wish i could do it all over again

Their performance was energising, they’re so great live I wish more of the audience knew them better so that the band would understand how powerful their music is. Hopefully next time I’ll see them for a longer more atmospheric performance.

Stage Times: Deaf Havana

James and Matty Veck-Gilodi talk drunken festival gigs, massive Muse crowds and coming back from the brink ahead of Deaf Havana’s major new record and UK tour

Two years ago, Deaf Havana broke up. Playing their last gig in Germany on November 28, 2019, the band made the decision to quit after a rough year following the recording of  Rituals  – an album that almost became their last. “I mean, it happened,” says James Veck-Gilodi. “We decided it formally, in a meeting, and then COVID came along and we didn’t really have to address it. And then it’s just a very strange, organic turn of events that ended up with us having a new record instead of calling it a day.”

Now consisting of just James and his brother Matty, Deaf Havana are back as a two-piece alt-rock outfit with a whole new direction, drawing from the pain of their lowest point to write an album that hits higher than ever before.

“I was in a pretty desperate place,” says James, addressing the lyrics on album opener ‘Pocari Sweat’, a song that literally puts him on the edge of a bridge. “That song came from exactly what it sounds like. But luckily I did find something that pulled me out of it.”

Returning to writing when he needed it the most, James reconnected with Matty to put out a few final songs (“we had to address things like paying off debts, which happens when you call it a day as a band”) and the pair found themselves slowly drawn back to the band.

“We were just gonna release one more song, but then that became an EP. And then we just kept writing. By the time we recorded the album we we’re like, ‘this is probably the best thing we’ve ever written’. I’m properly proud of it now. I think for the first time ever”.

With  The Present Is A Foreign Land  set for release on Friday 15 July and the band preparing to play a string of UK dates this November, Deaf Havana walk us back through best their memories of playing live.

Deaf Havana - Kids (Official Video)

James:  My first was in a place in Norfolk called Snettisham, which is the weirdest town you’ve ever been to. We played in the backroom of a pub. I was 15 and we literally played two Fall Out Boy songs, a From First To Last song and a load of other sh*t covers of emo bands. It was awful.

Matty:  Mine was the 12th of March 2012 at Southampton Take Down. It was us, and then Skindred.

James:  That’s a bit better than mine.

Matty:  I was just happy to have the weekend off from college!

James:  Probably Kentish Town Forum in… I don’t remember the year. It sounds really sad to say but in the 1000s of shows that I’ve played, I can probably count on my hands the ones that I’ve actually enjoyed. But that Kentish Town gig is one that I remember every second of. It felt like I was on autopilot, and I don’t mean that in a bad way. I just mean like, I wasn’t in my head.

Matty:  Yeah, it was fantastic. Often the hardest thing about playing live is each member having a good show at the same time, and it’s so rare for those circles to overlap. That was one of the times where everyone felt amazing.

James:  There’s a lot, to be honest! All the ones that were supposed to be the worst ended up actually being fun, because anything that makes it a bit weird is always fun. But I remember one awful show from when I was really young, just because I got too drunk. I couldn’t remember where the microphone was so I was just singing into thin air. But that didn’t really matter because it was in a town hall in Watford and no one was there.

Matty:  Well, we know what mine is don’t we…

James:  We do.

Matty:  Supporting You Me At Six at Wembley Arena. I got way too hammered and I just can’t remember any of it.

James:  Our sound guy turned you off.

Matty:  It was genuinely embarrassing.

James:  Luckily we had enough guitarists to cover us at that point. If you did that now we might have a bit of an issue… Wait! I know a worse one. Slam Dunk in Leeds, 2017. That’s probably the worst we’ve ever played, because we drank 21 bottles of Prosecco before we went on.

Matty:  Where Slam Dunk used to be, the artist area was actually inside a Wetherspoons. We went down for breakfast and never left. Sorry about that, anyone who was there.

James:  I think it was the second time we played the Reading and Leeds Main Stage. I don’t know how they count people, but I think they said there was about 57,000 people watching us play.

Matty:  One of the German shows we supported Kings Of Leon was massive too. Rüsselsheim? Or somewhere? I remember it was boiling hot. Then there was a huge Muse show in Germany too.

James:  I think the further away you are, the weirder it is with a big crowd. In Reading and Leeds the main stages are so far away from the crowd that it doesn’t feel that intimidating. But when you’re playing an arena I always feel way more scared to go on stage.

The Smallest

James:  I played a gig on a rail car. It probably had about 40 people in it.

Matty:  I reckon I can beat you there. I played a 1200 capacity venue in New Orleans, supporting Ash, and 12 people showed up. We literally stood on stage and counted them.

The Weirdest

James:  We used to be a bit heavier, and we played a show years ago at a pub in Ipswich. They put us on while everyone was having Sunday lunch, so we were this screamo band playing literally metres away from families trying to eat a quiet roast. I was apologising after every song.

Matty:  Remember that time we got booked for that festival in Cambridge though? We turned up and it was an actual village fete. We were on stage and there were all these people doing archery. It doesn’t get weirder than that!

The Present Is A Foreign Land  is out on Friday 15 July and Deaf Havana are playing UK dates this November, with tickets available  here .

LIVE REVIEW: Deaf Havana, The LaFontaines, Sick Joy, The 1865, Southampton, 29/03/2023

deaf havana tour uk

Photo Credit: Caitlyn Ebsworthy (Phoenix, Exeter – 1st April 2023)

Deaf Havana are a band you should probably know by now. Whether it’s because of their 2011 classic album Fools and Worthless Liars or their recent effort The Present Is A Foreign Land, they’re no strangers to the music world even if their line-up has gone undergone changes since their debut. Now officially a two piece of brothers James Veck-Gilodi and Matthew Veck-Gilodi , they were out on the road again not too long since their last tour of the UK in November. On a cold, rainy night in Southampton we and plenty others made our way down the high street to one of the city’s best venues.

Opening tonight’s proceedings were grunge outfit Sick Joy . Being met by a half empty venue, it was clear this might not be the easiest challenge for the band but they were definitely going to try and get them on board. Their radio-friendly sound was exhibited through tracks such as don’t feel like dying and recently release Painkiller, confidently performing back-to-back tracks. Sometimes you just don’t need to make small talk with the crowd to leave a lasting impression on them, but as their set casually came to an end, it felt as if they’d have rather been anywhere but there tonight and the crowd seemingly felt the same. 5/10

It seemed like everyone had received the memo about The LaFontaines fun live show as the venue was suddenly a lot fuller for the Scottish trio’s set. Taking to the stage in as they described it a bingo hall, we think everyone will agree it was probably the most fun anyone had had in a bingo hall, especially one in Southampton. The trio’s aggressive hip-hop and rock sound with a melodic edge is showcased during tracks such as lesser played Body where Jamie Keenan’s vocals albeit beginning to appear strained, take centre stage. Fan favourite Under The Storm is a shining example of the band at their best live, the dual vocals contrast from Kerr Okan’s spoken word to Keenan’s melodic efforts lead this to accumulate in a punchy standout moment. Frontman Kerr Okan has an undeniable swagger about him and the chat to match, one moment on the stage and the next up on the balcony where he proclaims, “ At one point I thought, these are my people! ” looking out into the packed crowd. You know what? In this moment, the crowd were The LaFontaines people as they put on a headline worthy set with their unrivalled crowd interaction. 8/10

There was a really special atmosphere in The 1865 in the lead up to Deaf Havana’s headline set and as they took to the stage throwing themselves straight into their anthemic track Boston Square , it was clear something great was to follow.

Performing a setlist spanning material both old and new from; Worship to Someone/Somewhere , showcased the musical journey the band have been on but how really, they haven’t changed at all even as their sound has evolved. Wire saw the band at their finest flaunting their varied and wide-ranging dual vocals leading up to the sing-along chorus which was complimented by swirling guitar lines. Latest album title track, The Present Is A Foreign Land , offered up a rowdier moment when Matthew’s raw vocals became the focus, turning things up a notch to become trapped in your head for the foreseeable.

One of our favourite parts of the set came with the double whammy of acoustic Nevermind followed by a new take on Holy. The atmosphere changed during Nevermind as the captivated crowd softly sung back the chorus; ‘ it’s been a hell of a year, I’m struggling to see what the next one looks like without you here ‘ accompanied by Matthew on keys. Leading into Holy , this was when we saw the true vocal power of the Veck-Gilodi brothers coming together, bouncing off each other to create a lyrically and musically beautiful moment for all to enjoy.

Some band’s sound better when recorded compared to live, for us it feels like Deaf Havana are the opposite of this as when before our eyes they come to life championed by James’ stage presence and vocal range. Offering a bit of a rock, some electro edge and also some acoustic vibes for good measure, it offered a bit for everyone during the set. Caro Padre has an air of elegance about this, but a guttural punch within especially when the instrumental section comes to life. Progressing through the set, it’s obvious that tonight meant as much to the band as it did the audience watching, with James letting us know ‘this has been our favourite show of the tour ’ followed by Matthew supporting this ‘sometime you get little reminders of just how fun it is to do what we’re able to do. So thank you’ .

19dreams, Going Clear and Remember Me see the duo, accompanied by touring members Luke Campbell and Kyle Deek coming together as an unbreakable unit; slick and simple born to be on that stage together. Taking the time to have some fun, crowd-interaction moments between the packed setlist we went from Matthew spotting a crunchie-eater in the crowd and sparking a chocolate chat, the band trying to establish when they were actually last in Southampton… we never did get a definitive answer and even the used q-tip mystery; trust us the less you know the better!

As the set began to draw to a close, James wasn’t about to go quietly as the venue became a funky, bingo-hall dancefloor during Pray as he bounded across the stage ensuring everyone knew of his presence. Informing the crowd; “ you made a shitty day really fucking good “, it was clear that in those 85 minutes they were onstage, for the band and everyone else in the room nothing else mattered as the track was supported by a energetic crowd sing-along. Closing their set with Kids ; one of the bands favourite tracks to perform live, the final words of ‘ you might get lost from time to time, cause you’re still just a kid trying to survive ’ rung out and provided the reminder we all needed.

There was something wonderfully nostalgic about tonight, for people in the room whose teens were filled with drunken memories of shouting along to The Past Six Years , those who stumbled across the band at one of their many festivals slots and those who just wanted a Wednesday night out; it felt as if we were all there to simply appreciate good live music. Deaf Havana remain one of the greatest British rock outfits out there and we can’t wait to see what the future holds. 9/10

Deaf Havana announce "next chapter" as a duo

Deaf Havana announce "next chapter" as a duo

Deaf Havana have revealed that they very nearly split up in 2020 – but are now back as a duo, with new music on the way soon.

Bassist Lee Wilson and drummer Tom Ogden have now left the band, leaving brothers James and Matthew Veck-Gilodi left on vocals and guitar duties.

"We would like to thank our brothers and day-one bandmates, Tom and Lee for slogging it out with us up until this point," Deaf Havana write of their former bandmates. "We wish them and their families all the best and every success for the future."

Read the full statement below:

"Early last year we were all ready to head our separate ways and call it quits. We'd had an incredible journey but like all the best journeys it felt like it was time for it to end. Then the pandemic hit and we had no choice but to stop.

"Then, more through circumstance than design, the two of us found ourselves writing songs together again. As we got deeper into the music, and had time to re-evaluate what was important to us, it became clear that these songs had a real, cathartic impact on our relationship as brothers. We thought about starting something new as a duo, but they just felt like Deaf Havana songs. We didn't want the journey to end, it was time for it to go in a different direction.

"There is definitely some sadness at the fact we're not all together anymore, it's been a long, incredible and sometimes difficult journey, but we did it together and sometimes that was the only thing that would get us through.

"We would like to thank our brothers and day one bandmates, Tom and Lee for slogging it out with us up until this point. We wish them and their families all the best and every success for the future.

"We are so proud of the music that we have been working on. The process felt natural and massively different to anything we have done before.

"We are feeling better than ever. This is the next chapter of Deaf Havana and we can't wait to share this with you all.

"James and Matty"
