Many thanks for great information!

al fustat nile cruise

Based on the review here, we booked on the Sonesta Moon Goddess March, 2023. We were disappointed. The rooms were indeed classic and comfortable. The carpets in the hall were old and stained. The HVAC systems in the room did not work properly despite engineering’s best efforts. Hot water was often hard to come by. The most disappointing element was the food. This was served buffet style, and almost never maintained hot. It was as if I had returned to my high school cafeteria. The staff were attentive and tried to please.

The review above does not reflect on the current state of affairs.

All ships owned by Shalkamy. Check with travel agent as a fight between English and Germans on Ramses 3 resulted in company spliiting Germans and English.

We did end up with Wed to Wed bookings which is normally Fostate. Tut1=2003. Tut4=2004. Tut 2=1998. Tut3=1999. Fostate=2003.

Food OK but repetative.

They DO take credit cards, but will tell you they don't. Make sure they input the 3 digit security code at end of transaction or it will not work. This is what they want to happen and for you to accept and pay cash or TC's.

Hi I sailed on this boat in September and it was exellent.

Suites cleaned and towels change twice a day.

Staff are very friendly and always have a smile

Guide are very knowlegable and speak very good English.

i thought the food was lovely plenty of choice and nice and hot which is a must to avoid tummy upset.

There was German guests on this boat but they ate and sat together and British guest seemed to stay together also.

You have your own English Speaking guide and own Coach for the excusions, to be honest everyone was friendly on the boat and all got along fine.

I had a wonderful time on this boat and would go back tomorrow.

' class=

Hi, we just returned from this boat. It's fine, I think you'll be happy. Not perfect, but fully ok for the purpose intended.

Plus points: friendly & helpful staff, good destinations, boat in reasonable condition, good sun deck with both sunny & shaded areas, comfy sunbeds, food generally hot with wide selection within limits.

Not so good: shortage of hot water at certain times, some food items repetitive, unimaginative & limited entertainment, tiring schedule of trips.

' class=

Cruise on the El Fostate (March 2008) was absolutely first class but I would recommend going all inclusive as we ended up with a £300 sterling bar bill, but that’s for a week so I suppose not too bad.

The whole ship is spotlessly clean, The cabins have everything in them and are cleaned at least twice a day, the staff cannot do enough for you.

We did have a small incident with one of the German tour guides but it soon blew over, we only had twenty English on the ship and the rest were nearly all German.

Prices on the ship seem expensive Stella at 33 LE a bottle I was offered a Galabayer at the shop on the ship for £25 GB and bought one in Aswan town for around £7 GB.

If I was asked to name one thing about the cruise that could have been better, I just couldn’t think of anything, everything was just superb

Excursion Program

Although we must have had one of the best guides around, Amal, and we only had twenty in our group we did find that by the end of the week we were just “Templed out” some of us did think that they do try to fit too much in and we did miss out some of the trips but they are optional so that’s a choice you have to make. This may sound like I’m complaining but believe me I’m not, our guide Amal was wonderful she was full of information, very knowledgeable and tried to fit as much in as possible.

At all the Temples, monuments you are really pestered by the local street traders, beggars etc, we learnt don’t look at them just keep walking and saying no thank you and definitely do not accept anything they claim is a gift or present, This was one of the things that everyone complained about and believe me they really are a pest but that’s life and they are not allowed past the gates of the monument/Temple.

Extra excursions

Everyone gets the option of some extra trips but beware some of these are very expensive, we got offered a hot air balloon ride at £70GB only to find the same trip on offer in The New Winter Palace Hotel for £30GB.

al fustat nile cruise

Hi tuckwood,

I booked this boat with Orbital travel & if you visit their website it tells you a little about this boat. I thought it sounded quite good 5* delux? but having read some of the reviews I'm not so sure??

I am going 25th Aug,for my partners 50th birthday! so let us know how you get on & what you think please

Having read some of the replies I wondered if we are talking about the same boat.(See my previous post)

We took the El Fostate 12 March 2008 for 7 nights and like I said before it was excellent.

I do agree the entertainment wasn't all it could have been but that didn't worry us, the food was excellent with loads of choice, the salads were lovely and everything fresh, the boat was full and as far a I know not one person complained about anything or got ill.

Judging by the week we had I will definately go back on the same boat, maybe we were just lucky or I suppose it could just depend on what you expect.

I was on El Fostate from 16 - 23 April 2008. It was absolutely super. The staff were were all charming and helpful without that subservience one can get. You would have to be a very fussy eater not to find something you like and the cold food was beautifully presented. Birthdays/anniversaries were celebrated with great enthusiasm by the staff with renditions in German and Egyptian Arabic as well as English.

No, the entertainment was not up to much but by then we had all become well known to each other and it didn't matter. The Galabeya party was enjoyable if you entered into the spirit of it.

The young Egyptologist, Ahmed, a.k.a. Charley was brilliant. He could not do enough for us. He made this holiday a really special experience. I didn't even mind the early starts. It was hot, very hot and there was a moan or two about being out in the midday sun, but not everything can be visited early morning and I was appropriately dressed with plenty of water so no complaints from me.

The cabin (305) was a bit noisy - I was next door to Ahmed who said he was over the engine - but it didn't keep me awake.

I would happily have stayed on El Fostate and repeated the whole trip, I enjoyed it so much.

Hi Barbara,

we're going on El Fostate 27th Aug for my partners 50th birthday(my treat!) & I was wondering if you could give us any advice/tips?

Did you have to pay for a visa at the airport?

Did you go with Orbital travel? & what did you think of their srvice?

Thanks for your reply

WHAT OUR CLIENTS SAY

Best Egypt tours Ever, we enjoyed our tour to Egypt with Egypt Tours Gate.

Jim D

We would sincerely like to thank Egypt Tours Gate for providing a safe, comprehensive, and memorable tourist experience of Egypt. My girlfriend & I were provided excellent service from flight touchdown to departure day. We met our first representative as we stepped off the plane, who quickly navigated us though customs, baggage collection, visa and money exchange, and finally to our hotel via private shuttle. Although the trip itinerary was outlined in advance of the trip, our guides were very receptive to making adjustments to our liking, where possible. We enjoyed seamless and headache-free travel and entrance to all the sites and adventures Egypt had to offer, with no surprises. The tour guides were very knowledgeable of all we visited, provided recommendations for how to spend time between sites, and were available virtually 24/7 for any questions/concerns we had. The accompaniment of personal guides removed a significant amount of upfront planning and the threat of costly and time-consuming logistical mistakes. This allowed us to focus on and enjoy Egypt as it was meant to be experienced. Overall, it was a great value for money. One of our favorite highlights was unwinding at the Siwa Oasis for our last leg of the trip. We decided to tag this on last minute as we were planning out the itinerary and are sure glad we did!. Siwa was a great spot for rest and relaxation as well as more fun adventures including a 4x4 keep excursion into the desert! We will never forget our cruise down the Nile either! Truly a once in a lifetime experience. We highly recommend Egypt Tours Gate for personalized tour services. They will tailor your trip to your exact needs! We are so thankful for our excursion there... Truly a childhood dream come true.

Enhance Your Trip

Begin your evening with a nighttime visit to Luxor Temple. After dusk, the temple is lit up, boasting fascinating plays of light and shadow off the reliefs and colonnades. Explore the inner chambers of the temple, including Amenhotep III’s “birth room” – which depicts scenes of the Pharaoh’s symbolic divine birth. Walk along the Avenue of Sphinxes, a 1 and half mile stretch once connecting Luxor Temple to Karnak Temple and lined with mysterious human-headed sphinxes. Then, delve deeper into the local culture with a visit to the historic Abu al-Haggag Mosque, perched atop the ruins of Luxor Temple. Cap your evening off with a visit to a local café for a taste of mint tea.

Dive into Egyptian culture before your tour even begins. Get your first taste with lunch at a local restaurant, featuring traditional Egyptian cuisine. After, move on to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. This contemporary 5,300,000 square foot space sits in the historic neighborhood of Fustat. The museum first opened in 2017 and is home to a collection of 50,000 artifacts, tracing the Egyptian civilization from prehistoric times to today. On April 3, 2021 the world watched in awe as the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities relocated here the Royal Mummies during the stunning Pharaohs’ Golden Parade. The 22 mummies (18 kings and 4 queens) of Egypt’s most important pharaohs and queens were displayed on the streets of Cairo as they were transported from the Museum in Tahrir Square to their new home in the Museum of Egyptian Civilization. This large collection of royal mummies includes the likes of King Ramses II, the most famous pharaoh of the New Kingdom, and Queen Hatshepsut, who came to rule at a time when women did not become pharaohs. With the expert guidance of a local Egyptologist, enjoy a visit of this impressive museum – a perfect introduction to your exploration of Egypt. This optional tour is operated by a local representative and requires guests to have a pre-night hotel stay in Cairo. The optional is available from January 1, 2024 onwards.

Visit the great sun temples of Abu Simbel, built by Ramses II at the height of his New Kingdom reign. In one of the world's greatest cooperative preservation efforts, these temples were dismantled and moved in 1968 to save them from the flooding of the Aswan Dam. The Temple of Ramses II was constructed so that the sun's rays would illuminate four statues of Egyptian deities within the sanctuary on his birthday and on the anniversary of his coronation, October 20 and February 20. The temple is fronted by four colossal figures of Ramses II seated with the gods and attended by his Queen and daughters. The smaller temple is dedicated to Queen Nefertari, who appears as Hathor, the goddess of love, joy and fertility.

Tour Sakkara, the sweeping necropolis and pyramid field of Memphis, Egypt’s first Capital. This is where pyramid building first began, 47 centuries ago when chief architect Imhotep built the grand step pyramid in honor of King Djoser. In company of an expert Egyptologist, visit this expansive burial complex counting 11 pyramids and the impressive Serapeum, the burial site of the sacred Apis bulls. Your intensive exploration of Sakkara concludes with lunch in a local restaurant, before returning to your hotel mid afternoon.

Uncover Cairo’s spiritual side during a tour of Cairo’s Citadel and its Old Coptic Quarter. Visit Saladin’s imposing Citadel and its Alabaster Mosque, built by Muhammad Ali Pasha in the 19th century. Venture onward to al-Fustat, Cairo’s oldest neighborhood, set within the ancient boundaries of a Babylonian fortress. It’s believed that al-Fustat is where the Holy Family took shelter when they fled to Egypt around the year 4CE. Explore Cairo’s confluence of Faiths where the three Abrahamic religions meet. Marvel at the ancient Coptic churches and take in exterior views of the Ben Ezra Synagogue – currently under restoration – where it is believed baby Moses was found.

Diverse Cruise Types: A Journey for Every Traveler

The Nile cruise experience is as varied as the landscapes it traverses. From long, luxurious voyages to short, immersive trips, there’s a journey for every type of traveler.

Long Egypt Nile Cruise: A Deep Dive into Egypt’s Heart

Certainly! Here’s the revised version with emphasis on “long cruise” to Long cruises along the Nile, extending from Cairo to Luxor or Aswan, are not merely voyages; they are an expansive exploration spanning 9 to 15 days, thoughtfully curated for history aficionados and culture enthusiasts. These long cruises are a profound journey through Egypt’s rich mosaic of history, culture, and awe-inspiring landscapes, offering a distinctive mix of relaxation and exploration.

What distinguishes these long cruises is their unparalleled access to both the globally acclaimed attractions like the magnificent Great Pyramids of Giza, the mysterious Sphinx, and the vast temple complexes of Luxor, as well as to the secluded treasures of ancient Egypt that elude the typical tourist itinerary. Among these hidden jewels are the Meidum Pyramid s, which shed light on the evolution of pyramid construction; the exquisite noble’s tombs in El Minya, offering insights into the lives of ancient Egyptian elites; and the ancient remnants of El Kab, echoing tales of past splendors.

al fustat nile cruise

Furthermore, a long cruise on the Nile unveils the splendor of Abydos Temple , an essential archaeological site and ancient Egyptian pilgrimage destination, renowned for its detailed reliefs and as the mythological burial site of Osiris. Dendera, with its remarkably preserved temple dedicated to Hathor, the goddess of love and joy, features one of the most intact temple complexes in Egypt, adorned with vivid ceiling paintings that have endured through ages.

Opting for a long Nile cruise thus provides a unique opportunity to delve into these less-visited sites, offering a chance to venture beyond the conventional tourist path and immerse in the lesser-known aspects and sounds of ancient Egypt. This voyage is more than a simple tour; it’s an intimate exploration into the essence of Egypt, where each stop along the lush banks of the Nile unfolds a chapter in a millennia-spanning narrative, inviting travelers to discover the hidden marvels that await beyond the familiar facades of Egypt’s most famous landmarks.

Through this immersive experience, travelers not only witness the majestic sights but also gain a profound understanding of Egypt’s ancient civilization, its lasting impact, and the complex web of its cultural heritage, making long Nile cruises a matchless journey back in time.

al fustat nile cruise

Short Nile Cruises,

“Though termed ‘short’ in contrast to their longer counterparts, Aswan to Luxor cruises, or Luxor to Aswan Nile Cruises as well as the Nile Cruise Luxor to Aswan, represent the most popular and cherished form of Nile exploration among travelers to Egypt. Typically spanning three to seven nights, these journeys navigate the heart of ancient Egypt, effortlessly connecting Luxor and Aswan. They offer guests a unique opportunity to traverse the Nile in either direction, ensuring they witness the most iconic landmarks in both cities, along with the captivating sites nestled along the river’s path.”

A four-night voyage traditionally embarks on Mondays from Luxor, setting off on a journey rich with historical discovery, while a three-night journey commences on Fridays from Aswan, each itinerary carefully crafted to showcase the splendor of ancient civilizations that flourished along the Nile’s banks. For those wishing to immerse themselves further, a seven-night cruise option is available. This extended voyage can begin either in Luxor or Aswan, looping back to the starting point, and is designed for travelers seeking a more leisurely pace and in-depth exploration of the Nile’s treasures.

al fustat nile cruise

These shorter Nile cruises are ideal for visitors who wish to balance the exploration of Egypt’s ancient marvels with the constraints of time, providing a condensed yet comprehensive experience of the Nile’s historical and cultural landscape. Whether embarking from Luxor or Aswan, travelers could delve into the heart of Egypt’s heritage, experiencing firsthand the awe-inspiring temples, tombs, and monuments that have captivated humanity for millennia.

Lake Nasser Cruise

Lake Nasser Cruises, akin to their Nile counterparts in duration, offer a unique voyage that is both concise and profoundly enriching. These cruises, navigating the vast expanse between Abu Simbel and Aswan, present an unparalleled opportunity to explore the serene beauty and monumental legacy of ancient Nubia.

Similar to the short Nile cruises, Lake Nasser cruises typically range from three to seven nights, tailored to fit the schedules of those seeking an adventure into the heart of ancient civilizations without the commitment of a lengthy journey. The experience is distinctly unique, focusing on the majestic Abu Simbel temples, a testament to the grandeur of Pharaonic architecture and engineering, and the tranquil waters of Lake Nasser, set against a backdrop of stark desert landscapes.

al fustat nile cruise

Whether embarking on a three-night journey or opting for a more extended seven-night exploration, travelers on Lake Nasser cruises are treated to a meticulously curated itinerary. This itinerary not only showcases the awe-inspiring temples of Abu Simbel, which were famously relocated to their current site as part of a massive UNESCO -led project, but also includes a selection of lesser-known archaeological sites and natural wonders along the lake’s shores, accessible only by boat.

Lake Nasser cruises offer a unique blend of relaxation, adventure, and historical exploration, providing an intimate glimpse into the ancient Nubian civilization and the modern feats of engineering that have preserved its legacy. For travelers intrigued by the mysteries of Egypt’s past and the enchanting beauty of its landscapes, a cruise on Lake Nasser is an unforgettable journey into the depths of history, set against the tranquil backdrop of one of the largest man-made lakes in the world.

Quality Matters: The 5-Star Experience

Opting for a 5-star cruise is crucial for a memorable holiday. These cruises ensure exceptional service, cleanliness, and comfort, elevating your Nile experience. They often include onboard amenities like spas, fine dining, and expert-guided tours, ensuring a luxurious journey.

al fustat nile cruise

Budget-Friendly Options: Cruising on a Dime

Cruises cater to various budgets, ranging from $90 to $1,500 per night, ensuring an experience that aligns with your financial preferences. Budget-friendly options don’t skimp on the experience, offering comfortable accommodations and access to stunning sights.

New vs. Experienced Crews: A Balance of Modernity and Expertise

While newer Nile cruises offer modern amenities, it’s important to consider the experience level of the staff, which could affect service quality. Experienced crews bring a depth of knowledge and cultural insight that can greatly enhance your journey.

Dahabiya- The Eco-Friendly Choice

Dahabiya cruises represent a timeless and eco-friendly way to explore the Nile. These traditional sailboats, powered by the gentle winds of the Nile, offer a serene and sustainable journey, making them the ideal choice for environmentally conscious travelers. The Dahabiya experience is about more than just travel; it’s a journey back in time, offering a glimpse into the tranquil river life that has flourished along the Nile for centuries.

Unique Experiences on a Dahabiyas

  • Intimate and Personal :  Dahabiyas  are much smaller than typical cruise ships, typically accommodating around ten to fifteen passengers. This smaller size creates a more intimate and personal experience, allowing for customized service and a deeper connection with ellow travelers.
  • Cultural Immersion : The journey on a Dahabiya often includes stops at lesser-known historical sites and local villages along the Nile. These visits provide a unique opportunity to engage with local culture, history, and people in a way that larger cruise ships cannot offer.
  • Tranquil Sailing : The absence of a motor means that your journey will be quiet and peaceful, with only the sound of the wind in the sails and the gentle lapping of the Nile against the boat. This tranquility allows for a more profound connection with the river and its surroundings.
  • Eco-Friendly Travel : Relying solely on wind power, Dahabiyas have a minimal environmental footprint. This mode of travel aligns with sustainable tourism practices, preserving the Nile’s delicate ecosystem for future generations.
  • Luxury and Comfort on the Egypt Nile Cruise : Despite their traditional design, many Dahabiyas, including the renowned MÖVENPICK SB FEDDYA, are equipped with luxurious amenities. These exceptional vessels combine the charm of the past with the comforts of the present, offering spacious cabins, fine dining experiences, sun decks, and sometimes even small pools. Embarking on a journey aboard the  MÖVENPICK SB FEDDYA  provides an unparalleled opportunity to explore the Nile’s beauty in comfort and style, making it a top recommendation for anyone seeking an unforgettable Egypt Nile cruise experience.”

al fustat nile cruise

  • Uncharted Territories : The agility of Dahabiyas allows them to dock at smaller, less accessible locations along the Nile. This means you can explore hidden gems away from the usual tourist track, providing a more authentic and exclusive experience.
  • Culinary Delights : Dining on a Dahabiya is a delightful experience, with chefs preparing a variety of local and international dishes. The meals are often made with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, providing a taste of the region’s rich culinary traditions.
  • Starlit Nights : Nights aboard a Dahabiyas are magical. Away from city lights, the sky above the Nile reveals a spectacular display of stars, offering an unparalleled stargazing experience.

A Journey Through Time

“Sailing on a Dahabiya during an Egypt Nile cruise is akin to stepping into a bygone era, offering a unique window into the past. This mode of travel provides an intimate experience with the Nile, allowing you to experience the river as ancient travelers might have, in perfect harmony with nature and at a leisurely pace dictated by the river’s gentle flow. It’s not merely a cruise; it’s a profound journey that weaves a deep connection with the rich tapestry of Egypt’s history, culture, and its timeless beauty.

As the Dahabiya glides silently through the water, you’ll find yourself immersed in the breathtaking landscapes that have remained unchanged for millennia, passing by ancient temples and tombs that are scattered along the riverbanks. This serene voyage offers ample time to reflect, relax, and absorb the tranquil beauty of the Nile, making each moment onboard an unforgettable part of your journey through Egypt. An Egypt Nile cruise on a Dahabiya is more than a trip; it’s a passage through time, where each bend of the river reveals new wonders and every sunset paints a story of ancient civilizations, connecting you to the heart and soul of this magnificent land.”

Luxor to Aswan Special

The 7-night, 8-day cruises from Luxor to Aswan, departing every Saturday, offer a superior experience. Their smaller size allows access to more exclusive locations, ensuring a more intimate journey. This cruise is ideal for those who want to explore the Nile in depth, with stops at lesser known yet equally fascinating sites.

Budget and Eco-Friendly Feluccas

For a truly authentic and budget-conscious experience, consider embarking on a felucca cruise. These traditional Egyptian sailboats offer a unique and intimate way to explore the Nile, available for journeys ranging from 3 to 7 days, starting from Esna and culminating in Aswan.

Feluccas are a testament to Egypt’s enduring maritime heritage. Unlike their motorized counterparts, these sailboats rely solely on the breeze of the Nile and the skill of the Nubian sailors, offering a tranquil and eco-friendly way to travel. This mode of transport has been used for centuries, connecting you not just to the stunning landscapes but also to a rich cultural history.

Unique Experiences on a Felucca

  • Close Connection with the Nile : Traveling on a felucca allows you to experience the Nile’s rhythms and sounds in a way that larger cruise ships cannot offer. It’s an opportunity to disconnect from the modern world and immerse yourself in the tranquility of the river.
  • Cultural Immersion : Felucca journeys often include stops at smaller villages and islands along the Nile, offering a glimpse into the daily lives of local communities. This is a chance to interact with locals, learn about their traditions, and experience the genuine hospitality of the Egyptian people.
  • Stargazing Nights : Sleeping on deck under a canopy of stars is a magical experience. Away from the light pollution of cities, the night sky over the Nile offers an incredible view of constellations and shooting stars, making for unforgettable evenings.
  • Traditional Egyptian Cuisine : Meals on a felucca are usually prepared by the crew and offer a taste of authentic Egyptian home cooking. This often includes freshly caught fish from the Nile, along with a variety of local vegetables and bread.
  • Flexibility and Simplicity : Feluccas are small and agile, able to dock at various points of interest that are not accessible to larger vessels. The simplicity of a felucca journey is part of its charm, offering a peaceful and unstructured travel experience.

Comfort Levels and Customization

Feluccas come in various comfort levels, catering to different preferences and budgets. While they are generally more basic than luxury cruise ships, many have been outfitted with comfortable sleeping arrangements and basic amenities to ensure a pleasant journey. Travelers can choose from a range of options, from very basic setups for the more adventurous to more upgraded feluccas with enhanced comfort features.

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Travel

Choosing a felucca cruise is also a decision to travel sustainably. These sailboats have a minimal environmental impact, relying on wind power and causing no pollution to the pristine waters of the Nile.

A felucca journey is more than just a trip; it’s a voyage through time, offering a glimpse into the ancient way of life along the Nile. It’s an experience that connects you to the history, culture, and natural beauty of Egypt in a profound and personal way.

Description for 14 Day Egypt Tour with Nile Cruise

Upon arrival in Cairo/Egypt, you will be met by your guide who will bring you to your hotel in the suburbs of Cairo. Once you are there, you can check in at your leisure and look forward to dinner. Now begins your journey through Egypt!

Our English-speaking Egyptologist will pick you up from your hotel early in the morning. You will travel to the Pyramids of Giza in an air-conditioned minibus with a private driver who, like our guide, will accompany you throughout your journey through Egypt to and from. These three great pyramids are the tombs of Cheops, Menkaur and Khafre. They are considered one of the seven wonders of the world and, like the Sphinx 500 meters away, still raise many questions that scientists around the world are trying to answer. Then proceed to the Step Pyramid of Saqqara.

Then you will be transferred back to your hotel where you can enjoy the impressions of the first day of our trip to Egypt.

After breakfast, you will continue your tour of Egypt on our private bus. Today, Islamic Cairo and the Amr Ibn el-As Mosque located there, as well as the Coptic Quarter and the Church of St. Mary, also called the Hanging Church, are on the program. The most beautiful church in Egypt is named after its location above the southwestern Roman gate towers.

Unfortunately, apart from AD 645 Islamic Cairo is not known. Little remains of the Amr ibn el-As mosque, built in the oldest and simplest style. However, this mosque is worth a visit.

Our guide will explain to you that Cairo is also a city of three major world religions: Jewish, Coptic and Islamic. All religions peacefully coexist side by side.

You will then return to your hotel where you can relax and look forward to the next day.

On this day you will visit the Egyptian Museum and the famous Khan El-Khalili Bazaar.

The Egyptian Museum has 120,000 exhibits. Among other things, the treasury of the tomb of Tutankhamun, which tells about the life of the young pharaoh. Our guide will be happy to introduce you to the past of Egypt and answer all your questions.

The Khan El Khalili Bazaar is a must when visiting Cairo. Here you will find handicrafts next to the butchers, jewelers next to the spice stalls. Let yourself be carried away by the unique flair and the thousand scents of Arabia.

In the evening, after being transferred to your hotel and checked out, you will be picked up for your flight to Luxor. Arrive in Luxor the same evening and be transferred to a 5 star cruise ship on the Nile River.

From here, the next day, our 7-day journey along the Nile begins.

On this day on our Nile cruise you will visit Karnak and Luxor temples.

The temple city of Karnak, once the religious center of the ancient pharaohs, contains many shrines, obelisks and phyllons adjacent to the Karnak temple. Fustat  (Arabic:  الفُسطاط ,  romanized:  al-Fusṭāṭ ), also  Fostat , was the first capital of Egypt under Muslim rule, and the historical centre of modern Cairo. It featured the Mosque of Amr, the first mosque built in Egypt.

The city reached its peak in the 12th century, with a population of approximately 200,000. It was the centre of administrative power in Egypt, until it was ordered burnt in 1168 by its own vizier, Shawar, to keep its wealth out of the hands of the invading Crusaders. The remains of the city eventually absorbed by nearby Cairo. It had been built to the north of Fustat in 969. When the Fatimids conquered the region and created a new city as a royal enclosure for the Caliph. The area fell into disrepair for hundreds of years and used as a rubbish dump.

Today, the ruins of Fustat lie within the modern district of Old Cairo, with few buildings remaining from its days as a capital. Many archaeological digs have revealed the wealth of buried material in the area. Many ancient items recovered from the site are on display in Cairo’s Museum of Islamic Art.

Description of Fustat

Fustat, also Al-Fustat, was the first capital of the Arab Islamic Caliphate and the medieval Islamic world. The Arab general Amr ibn al-Aas founded it in 641 CE , shortly after the Muslim conquest of Egypt. The city was near the ancient Egyptian city of Memphis, on the west bank of the Nile River, near modern-day Cairo.

Fustat initially served as a military camp for the Muslim army, but it quickly grew into a major urban center. It became the center of the Islamic world in Egypt, and attracted scholars, traders, and artisans from all over the Islamic world. People knew the city for its thriving cultural and intellectual scene, with many mosques, madrasas (Islamic schools), and libraries built during its heyday.

Fustat was also an important center for trade, as it was located at the crossroads of several major trade routes. The city was a hub for the export of goods such as textiles, spices, and glass, and was also a major center for the import of goods such as silk, gold, and silver.

The city’s importance declined over time, as the Abbasid Caliphate moved its capital to Baghdad in 762 CE. However, Fustat continued to be an important urban center in Egypt until the 12th century. In fact, Cairo replaced it as the capital of the Islamic world in Egypt. Today, Fustat is a major archaeological site, with many of its ancient ruins still visible in modern-day Cairo.

Its construction began 757 AH/1356 CE with work ending three years later “without even a single day of idleness”. At the time of construction the mosque was considered remarkable for its fantastic size and innovative architectural components. Commissioned by a sultan of a short and relatively unimpressive profile, al-Maqrizi noted that within the mosque were several “wonders of construction”. The mosque was, for example, designed to include schools for all four of the Sunni schools of thought: Shafi’i, Maliki, Hanafi and Hanbali.(2 hrs time Spent)

Then Followed by another big famous Mosque Which is Al-Rifa’i Mosque The building is located opposite the Mosque-Madrassa of Sultan Hassan, which dates from around 1361, and was architecturally conceived as a complement to the older structure.
