Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

I traveled with my family of 6 with 4 young children . Just make sure you read reviews properly. My daughter was violently sick for 3 days with food poisoning and we knew of so many more whilst we were there. We had to ring reception everyday for change is bedding it was that bad! I did read that sickness is a thing here but was just hoping for the best. The resort is so busy you can’t take your eye of the children for one minute. The air conditioning is awful in fact non existent. The only good thing is stage academy, football and the climbing wall. Personally book somewhere else it’s not worth the money, the star rating or having the stay in your room the entire time throwing up!

We stayed at this hotel for a week, 3 days into our holiday I ate at the pool bar and was served raw chicken. I always cut into my food to check it’s cooked but when I went to eat the second piece it was raw (see pictures). I was watching the chef and he was using the same utensils for both cooked and uncooked meat. I experienced both sickness and diarrhoea which I reported to the hotel and TUI. The hotel paid at their expense for a doctor to come to my hotel room and confirmed food poisoning and prescribed anti sickness tablets. Demi on reception was very apologetic and was helpful in getting me treatment and getting drinks sent to my room. I was also delivered food to my room after speaking to reception. I have since been in contact with the managing director who has been very quick to respond to me, they have assured me the chef is no longer working at the pool bar, received disciplinary action and further training. It’s a shame it has unfortunately ruined my holiday. I have heard from other people that they also experienced sickness whilst here and there was also lots of comments about this on the Facebook group which have now been deleted as requested by hotel management. I’ve never been ill before on holiday and never experienced food poisoning before. I’ve always checked my food, I don’t drink alcohol so it wasn’t from drinking too much and we was indoors/shade during peak sun hours as we had 2 small children with us. Positives: - friendly staff - great room (number 1506 - views of pool and evening entertainment) - comedian evening entertainment - Italian restaurant

What a fabulous time we had just got back yesterday 😀 we loved everything from the room,food choice. Everything spot on,briliant and friendly staff,loved the bus to the beach brilliant idea party bus with music and flshing lights with HV party tunes,but the best bit was the HV team amazing staff a credit to First Choice,Tyler,Rianne,Connie,and Jess but they all shined like stars definitely recommend for all ages,just one negative if you like the specialty restaurants you need to book on the app maybe before you go we only managed to get one out of the 3 which was the Indian. We will certainly be back again. Thank you for a wonderful holiday

We are currently on our last day here , with 3 grandkids and 4 adults. Cannot believe some of the really negative comments . The hotel is spotless and the staff from the amazing entertainment team to the cleaners are superb and so happy always ready to stop and chat . They are the biggest asset of this hotel . Also the food is delicious with plenty of choice . Our grandson has a dairy and sesame intolerance but there are always alternatives , with the staff being very knowledgeable with what ingredients are in certain dishes . Although ive already mentioned them, the entertainment team must get the biggest nod , so talented but so welcoming as well. Absolute stars with the kids . Would highly recommend staying here and would urge you to ignore the negativity as i havent experienced or seen one thing to moan about ! Thanks for a great holiday

I'm here at the moment and the staff and weather is great. They can't be faulted. The food is generally good and the place is very clean. There's loads for kids to do and there's great swimming pools, although they're cold at this time of the year. My only complaint is some of the food. Following a number of posts in relation to food being undercooked and "reported" cases of food poisoning, I cut open my kids sausages this morning to find that they were undercooked in the middle. I reported it to the restaurant manager and it took another 10 mins for him to arrange to have them taken away. In the meantime I stood over the food and warned people off them! I reported it to the reps and the hotel manager rang me just a moment ago very apologetic and saying that it shouldn't happen and checking on our wellbeing. He asked if there was anything he could do but I just wanted the situation to be improved, not any type of compo. Mistakes happen but when there are this many people about, food has to be well cooked.

If you think that the Kremlin District is the only place with bustling crowds and good food, think again. Russkiy is located atop a tall office tower. It provides great views of Moscow and makes it possible to grasp both the scale and layout of... the city. I was there for a group dinner that was served family style. The meat, fish, and vegetables were all quite good. It was better than expected for such a large group. Nothing was super memorable though it was all tasty. More

If you want to try Russian food - this is one of the places to go for it. Great service, tasty food of every choice. The service is also very good. I recommend visiting it, especially if you stay at Crowne Plaza Hotel
