2022 PGA Championship leaderboard, winner: Justin Thomas edges Will Zalatoris in playoff for second major win
Thomas has now won two of the last six pga championships for his pair of major titles.
TULSA, Okla. — Justin Thomas came back from seven strokes on Sunday to win the 104th PGA Championship at Southern Hills, forcing the tournament into a three-hole aggregate playoff that he eventually won over Will Zalatoris to take home the second Wanamaker Trophy of his young career. In doing so, Thomas tied for the third-largest comeback after 54 holes in major championship history.
Thomas began his day at 2 under and roared back with a 3-under 67 in Round 4 that included a bogey-free 3-under 32 on the back nine. He birdied the first and second playoff holes and made par on the last, while Zalatoris matched the birdie on the first hole (No. 13) but was unable to hold serve over the final two (Nos. 17-18).
Thomas' seven-stroke comeback win marked the largest 54-hole comeback to win a major championship since the 1999 Open Championship. It was just the sixth time in history that a golfer won a major after trailing by seven strokes or more entering the final round.
"It was a bizarre day. I definitely crossed one off the list. I've never won a tournament shanking a ball on Sunday. That was a first, and man, I'd really like it to be a last," Thomas said after his victory. "... I was asked earlier in the week, 'What lead is safe?' And I said, 'No lead.' This place is so tough, but if you hit the fairways, you can make birdies. I stayed so patient, and I just can't believe I found myself in a playoff."
Zalatoris, meanwhile, achieved a second-place finish at a major for the second time in his career (2021 Masters). It was also his fifth top-eight finish in his last seven major starts. He began the day three strokes off the lead in T2 and posted a 1-over 71 in Round 4.
The tournament was surprise 54-hole leader Mito Pereira's to lose on Sunday as the 27-year-old Chilean opened the day with a three-stroke advantage on the field and either shared the lead or held it outright for every hole but his last. A birdie putt on the 17th, which would have given Pereira a two-stroke lead, stopped a half rotation short of the hole in a heartbreaking moment.
Pereira entered the 18th, the 72nd hole of his tournament, one stroke up on the field only to blast his drive into a creek right of the fairway. He eventually finished with a double bogey, not only giving away his potential victory but opening the door for Thomas and Zalatoris to compete in a playoff for the Wanamaker.
In regulation, Thomas stood over a birdie putt at the 18th that would have given him a field-best 4-under 31 on the back nine and ultimately been the outright win (after Pereira finished). He missed that and settled for par, while Zalatoris birdied the 18th to match Thomas for the clubhouse lead at 5 under.
2022 PGA Championship playoff
- Hole 1 (par-5 13th): Thomas found the rough off the tee but hit his third shot 6 feet from the hole for a clutch birdie putt. Zalatoris looked to have bested J.T. by making it on the green in two but was forced to tap in for birdie after a long eagle putt slid wide left.
- Hole 2 (par-4 17th): Thomas drove the green off the tee in spectacular fashion , while Zalatoris attempted the same only to fortunately land just feet from a greenside bunker. Zalatoris missed a 12-foot putt and settled for par, while J.T. calmly knocked his 56-foot eagle putt within 4 feet for a birdie and the lead.
- Hole 3 (par-4 18th): Both men made it on the green in two, though Zalatoris' approach slid down a ridge to put him further from the hole. Zalatoris putted to within a couple feet, while Thomas knocked his to inside a foot for a par putt and the championship.
Advantage, Justin Thomas
With Will Zalatoris off the green, Justin Thomas has found the putting surface on the par-4 18th. With a one-stroke lead, Thomas looks well-positioned to grab his second Wanamaker Trophy unless Zalatoris pulls a rabbit out of a hat.
J.T. up one with one hole to go
It is a birdie for Thomas and par for Zalatoris. To 18 they go to decide the 104th PGA Championship
J.T. finds the putting surface on the par-4 17th
The 2017 PGA Champion will have an eagle look from just inside 40 feet on the second playoff hole. Zalatoris meanwhile is well positioned to get up and down for birdie.
All tied after the first playoff hole
The two trade birdies on the par-5 13th albeit in different manners. They will now head to the short par-4 17th where they both will most certainly attempt to drive the green.
Zalatoris reaches par-5 13th in two
Finding the middle of the fairway, Will Zalatoris has reached the 13th green in two and will have roughly 25 feet for eagle. Meanwhile, Justin Thomas was forced to lay up after hitting his tee shot in the rough. It is early but advantage Zalatoris.
Zalatoris vs. Thomas in a playoff
It will be a 3-hole aggregate playoff between Justin Thomas and Will Zalatoris for the 104th PGA Championship. After Mito Pereira imploded on the 72nd hole, the two Americans will play Nos. 13, 17 and 18 for the Wanamaker Trophy.

A PGA Tour card is within this former LIV golfer's grasp. But a quirky tour bylaw makes things a little more complicated
WENTWORTH, England — It’s a time of year on the DP World Tour when a variety of agendas are in play. There are those at this week’s BMW PGA Championship who are simply trying to keep their cards for 2025. Others are shooting to make the top 70 on the Race to Dubai in order to gain entry to November’s lucrative playoff events in the Middle East. One or two even have ambitions to overhaul Rory McIlroy at the top of the season-long rankings. Perhaps the most intriguing of all, however, is the competition for the PGA Tour cards on offer to the 10 highest-ranked pros who do not already own playing rights across the pond.
As of this moment, the 10 best-placed are a diverse group headed by the newly-minted Irish Open champion, Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard . The others: South African Thriston Lawrence, two Swedes in Jesper Svensson and Sebastian Soderberg, another Dane, Niklas Norgaard, two Italians, Matteo Manassero and Guido Migliozzi, and two Frenchmen, Romain Langasque and, in 10th place, Frederic Lacroix.
Where it gets really interesting though is that the man currently occupying the 11th spot only 42.86 points behind Lacroix, is Laurie Canter. The 34-year-old Englishman is a man with an almost unique recent history in professional golf.
Having skipped a few events on the 2022 DP World Tour schedule as he pursued play on the LIV Golf circuit, the former South African and Spanish Amateur champion finished 130th on the Race to Dubai. Outside the all-exempt category, Canter fell to a category where his opportunities to tee-up on his home tour were clearly more limited. But that also meant, in weeks when he was outside the starting line-up on the DP World Tour, he was free to play elsewhere.
“I was lucky in a perverse way,” said Canter at the time.
Indeed, Canter continued to play on both the DP World Tour and the LIV Golf league until seven months ago. What was, so far at least, his final LIV event was Feb. 8-10 in Las Vegas. But everything really changed when Canter won his first DP World Tour title, the European Open, in early June. Suddenly, he was free to play every week on his home circuit and, perhaps just as crucially, he leapt into contention for one of the aforementioned PGA Tour cards.
“If I get one of the 10 cards, I’ll definitely be taking it up,” says Canter, who finished second in the 2021 BMW PGA Championship, one-shot shy of Billy Horschel’s winning score. “If you play well enough to get one of those spots, it is such an opportunity. I’ve talked with some of the guys who went there this year and it’s clear that some of them have made great starts and really leaned into it. Others have enjoyed the flexibility that gives them the chance to come back to Europe as and when they wish. There is plenty of time in a year to play both.”
More From Golf Digest
In Canter’s case should he make the top 10, his allocation of time will be slightly different from the other nine qualifiers. His last LIV start in February will come back to haunt him to the extent that PGA Tour rules dictate that even though he has never previously had tour membership he must serve a 12-month suspension from all PGA Tour-sanctioned events.
“The PGA Tour has been really up-front with me,” Canter says. “They wrote to me before the Scottish Open. They confirmed that a year has to have passed before I can play in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event. So that will be February [2025]. I e-mailed back and told them what I thought of the policy. I haven’t been a member of the tour, but it remains a dream of mine to be so. Still, proactively banning people is a policy I can’t quite get my head round. If I was a member and broke a regulation, then I get it. But to be disciplined when you’re not a member does seem strange. But, having said that, to get the opportunity to play from February would be great.”
So it’s over with LIV?
“I tried to play there for two years, 2022 and 2023,” Canter says. “So it would be better to say that LIV is done with me more than I am done with them. But that happening allowed me to play in Europe. And now I’m a winner on the tour. The irony was that the decline in my status on LIV allowed me to play here again. I’m happy to be chasing my PGA Tour card and trying to play as well as I can. Like everyone I guess, I’m hoping for a collaborative end to all that is going on right now. We’re all sick of it. I hear that olive branches are being extended here and there, so let’s hope the end is near.”
One thing encouraging Canter is how well most of last year’s PGA Tour card winners have done in 2024. The long-time narrative that a large gap in standard exists between the rank-and-file pros on the PGA Tour and on the DP World Tour took a bit of a beating.
“The way the guys have played this year provides evidence that the gap is not that big,” Canter says. “Our best have always had skill levels that maybe don’t the credit they deserve. Bob [MacIntyre] and Matthieu [Pavon] both made the Tour Championship, which is an unbelievable achievement. A lot of world-class players didn’t do that. And lots of our other guys kept their cards on limited schedules. That’s all great to see and gives me confidence that I could so okay over there if I get the chance.”
Still, all of that is for the (possible) future. Right now, Canter has other, more important, things on his mind. Wife Anna is due to give birth to their second child this weekend.
“That’s my priority,” he says. “I’ll be having some time off after this event. I’ll play in only the Dunhill Links before the playoff events in the Middle East in November. So thoughts of the card can wait. Besides, it will come down to how well I play when I do play more than how many times I play.”

One of the founding events on the inaugural DP World Tour schedule in 1972, its list of champions features some of the most recognisable figures of the game.
Ryan Fox won the biggest title of his career at the West Course 12 months ago, with a closing birdie helping him to a one-shot victory over English duo Aaron Rai and Tyrrell Hatton.
Among those also teeing it up are 2023 Ryder Cup-winning team-mates Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose and Nicolai Højgaard, while Adam Scott, Byeong Hun An and Si Woo Kim bring international interest as they warm up for next week's Presidents Cup in Canada.
Billy Horschel, who won this event in 2021, looks to continue his resurgence in form which included a tied second finish at The Open earlier this summer, while he is joined in the field by fellow Americans Peter Malnati and Mark Hubbard.
If you have not done so already, you can sign up to play the official 2024 DP World Tour Fantasy game here and submit your six-man team before round one gets under way on Thursday.
The 2024 season-long winner will win a trip to the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai next year, enjoy a lesson with a DP World Tour professional and a round of golf on the Earth Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates. For more information on this amazing prize and others, read here .
Fantasy Insight : In the early stages of players picking their teams, Adam Scott, who will represent the International Team at the Presidents Cup next week, is currently most chosen, featuring in almost 70% of squads.
Robert MacIntyre, who won his first Rolex Series title at the Genesis Scottish Open in July, is the next most-selected at just under 66%, while his fellow Ryder Cup-winning team-mate Tommy Fleetwood is third in just over 63% of teams.
Former champions Billy Horschel and Shane Lowry round off the top five, with 60% and just over 50%.
Here, we pick out three players in action this week who are worth considering for your Fantasy team selections.
Favourite - Rory McIlroy
Beware the wounded animal. After the disappointment of missing out on winning his national Open in his home County, this could well be the week that McIlroy puts the memories of some near misses this year behind him and claims a second BMW PGA Championship title. The champion of 2014 arrives as the Race to Dubai Rankings in Partnership with Rolex leader, and as the favourite among the bookies. A winner in both Dubai and the United States this year, the 35-year-old has finished in the top ten at Wentworth in each of the last four editions.
Form Horse - Rasmus Højgaard
To pick a man who won last time out as a Form Hose may seem a little on the nose but there are more reasons to go for Højgaard than his sensational victory at the Amgen Irish Open. The Dane now sits second on the Race to Dubai Rankings, the same position in which brother Nicolai finished last season and sibling rivalry could well provide inspiration for Rasmus to keep his foot down. After missing out on Dual Membership with the PGA TOUR last season, he started 2024 with five consecutive top 12s and since then has added two further top fives along with his fifth career victory.
Wild Card - Laurie Canter
It shows just how strong the field is this week at Wentworth Club that a player with a win in 2024 can be a Wild Card but less than 4% of players have Canter in their team. A long-time nearly man on the DP World Tour, Canter came through the Qualifying School in 2015, 16 and 17 before breaking out in the Covid-affected 2020 season with a top 20 finish on the Race to Dubai. He finished in the top 25 on the Rankings the following season, largely thanks to a runner-up finish at this event and while he missed the cut in 2022, he is clearly comfortable on the West Course. He has a second and two further top tens this season and a tie for 17th in Ireland last week was his best finish since his victory at the European Open.
Looking Back - Amgen Irish Open
With his victory at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland, Rasmus Højgaard amassed 176 points for the 1,283 (3.89%) players who picked him, with 42 making inroads on their competition by making him their captain.
Our Favourite Rory Mcllroy finished runner-up to Højgaard, while our Form Horse Robert MacIntyre finished tied fifth and Wild Card Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen - making his first DP World Tour start since gaining automatic promotion from the Challenge Tour - missed the cut.

2024 BMW PGA Championship Tournament preview
The BMW PGA Championship is this week, and the DP World Tour has its flagship event at Wentworth Club in England. This is one of the better Wentworth fields in recent memory, though Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland decided not to play this year.
Wentworth is a tricky course, and players have to make their moves both early and late in the round. The middle chunk of the course is about avoiding big mistakes. The drives can be challenging, and the corridors can muster claustrophobic thoughts.
2024 BMW PGA Championship Tournament rankings: Top 10 players
1. Rory McIlroy : McIlroy has to be heartbroken to miss out on the Irish Open at Royal County Down, but he may have found something for this week.
2. Shane Lowry : Lowry was the winner here in 2022, back when the tournament was shortened to 54 holes. He has the game for tough courses like this one.
3. Rasmus Hojgaard: Rasmus is probably spent from winning the Irish Open, but he's been in the top three in two of his last three DP World Tour starts.
4. Tommy Fleetwood : Fleetwood has been on a nice run since the Olympic silver in Paris, including a good run at the BMW Championship in Denver.
5. Billy Horschel : Horschel is a past champion here, and he's enjoyed a fantastic season with that close call at the Open.
6. Robert MacIntyre: Bob has been in the top 16 in his last three starts, which includes a T-5 at the Irish Open last week.
7. Aaron Rai: Rai has cooled off some since the run that led to his win in the Wyndham Championship, but he keeps on cashing checks.
8. Byeong Hun An: Ben An has done it here, and he's enjoyed perhaps his best season (in terms of consistency) as a pro.
9. Matthieu Pavon: Pavon is a risky play this week because he's a high-ceiling, low-floor kind of guy. He missed the cut here last year, but he's shown he can thrive out of nowhere.
10. Matt Fitzpatrick : Fitz has fallen down the world ranking pretty significantly this year, but it's not for a lack of making cuts and decent finishes.

Munich/London. The 2024 BMW PGA Championship (19 – 22 September, Wentworth Club, Surrey, England) marks a significant milestone, as BMW celebrates its 20th year as title partner of the DP World Tour’s flagship event. To commemorate this highly successful partnership, we explore some of the highlight moments that have helped to define the last two decades.
The championship dates back to 1955, when it was originally known as the British PGA Championship, before coming under BMW stewardship in 2005. Since then, the tournament has gone from strength to strength, evolving into a ‘Festival of Golf’ with its star-studded Pro-Am line ups, Championship Village and live concerts from world-renowned artists. The 20th BMW PGA Championship closely follows the 35th BMW International Open, and further cements the brand’s commitment to international golf.
Aside from a formidable list of champions, the tournament’s most prominent legacy is arguably its deeply rooted connection to charity, supporting many deserving causes over its 20-year history. Its most recent beneficiary is the Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM), who strive to change the conversation around mental health and suicide. Since 2022, more than £150,000 has been raised for CALM, who will remain as official charity partner for a third consecutive year.
Ahead of the 20th BMW PGA Championship – which is expected to be the most widely attended tournament to date, with Saturday and Sunday tickets already sold out – we explore tournament and automotive highlights from two decades of play.
2006: Two champions are crowned.
Teeing off in 2006, the second BMW PGA Championship sees David Howell cruise to victory by five shots, becoming the first homegrown winner since Nick Faldo in 1989. Meanwhile, BMW 3 Series is crowned ‘Car of the Year’ at the prestigious 2006 What Car? Car of the Year Awards. Arriving as the fifth incarnation, the 3 Series was praised by What Car? for its blend of typically ‘sharp’ driving dynamics, outstanding refinement and everyday practicality.
2008: Standing out from the crowd.
Golf icon Miguel Ángel Jiménez showcases a stand-out performance, acing the fifth, before beating Oliver Wilson on the second extra hole to take the title. Born to stand out too, the BMW X6 launches as the world’s first ever Sports Activity Coupé, combining the attributes of an SUV with the stance of a coupé for the first time.
2010: Redesigned and reimagined.
Nicknamed ‘The Big Easy’, South African golfing legend, Ernie Els oversees the redesign of the West Course, including a major revamp of the 18th hole. Concurrently, a BMW legend is reimagined, as the BMW 5 Series Touring enters its fourth generation, bringing an eight-speed automatic transmission, Auto Start-Stop technology and up to an exceptional 1,670 litres of luggage capacity.
2011 & 2012: Doing the double.
With an astonishing performance, England’s Luke Donald beats fellow countryman Lee Westwood at the 2011 championship and takes the top spot as world number one for the first time in his career. Donald went on to defend his title in 2012, becoming only the third player to do so since Colin Montgomerie and Sir Nick Faldo. Also doing the double with more power and less fuel consumption, the fifth generation BMW M5 is launched, boasting 560 hp – up 10 per cent on its predecessor model – while cutting fuel consumption by more than 30 per cent.
2013: Fresh talent.
Italy’s Matteo Manassero becomes the tournament’s youngest-ever winner, taking home the trophy at just 20 years of age. Simultaneously, the BMW i3 makes its debut as the first series-produced model by BMW i, offering a fresh all-electric powertrain and groundbreaking new technology. Like Manassero, the trailblazer went on to create a legacy of its own, with over 250,000 units delivered to customers worldwide.
2014: Global stars.
Rory McIlroy secures the win after a dramatic final round, overturning a seven-shot overnight deficit to score a 66 on the final day and clinch a thrilling victory. Heralded as his first win on British soil, it kick started a memorable year for the world number one, in which he also won The Open and US PGA Championship. Also launched in 2014, BMW’s first plug-in hybrid sports car, the BMW i8 becomes a star of its own. Honoured as Top Gear Magazine’s ‘Global Car of the Year’ the innovative powerhouse went on to secure almost as many titles as the Northern Irish legend.
2015: Records are made to be broken.
Finishing with a record-breaking 21-under-par, South Korean, Byeong-Hun An – a European Tour rookie – claims victory. A remarkable five aces are recorded throughout this tournament, making it a memorable event for such a rare achievement. Offering both record-breaking lap times and remarkable performance, the special edition BMW M4 GTS is unveiled as the fastest series-production BMW road car ever offered to customers. With a boosted output of 500hp, the GTS shaved 30 seconds off the standard BMW M4’s Nürburging Nordschleife lap time.
2019: Big moves.
Marking one of the tournament’s most memorable moments, Ross Fisher makes a sensational albatross on the 18th hole by sinking a 218-yard second shot with a 4-iron and wins a BMW i8 for the first albatross of the tournament that week. BMW made some big moves too in 2019, launching its largest production car to date, the BMW X7. Combining a spacious, opulent interior, powerful engine derivatives and advanced technology, the luxury SUV strikes the perfect balance between comfort and performance.
2021: Going full circle.
Bringing it back for the USA, Billy Horschel becomes the first American victor since the great Arnold Palmer in 1975. Bringing back and repurposing an array of materials, the BMW i Vision Circular is unveiled to the world at the IAA Motor Show in Munich. Envisioned for the year 2040, the Vision Circular is BMW’s take on circular economy, fusing sustainability with luxury in a design that uses 100 per cent recyclable materials.
2023: Powered with sustainability in mind.
In a world first for a sporting event, the television production for the 2023 BMW PGA Championship is powered 100 per cent by green hydrogen. TV wasn’t the only thing powered by hydrogen last year, with the arrival of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen pilot fleet. The 100-strong fleet was deployed internationally for demonstration and trial purposes. BMW plans to launch its first-ever series production fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) in 2028, thereby offering customers an additional all-electric powertrain option with zero local emissions in a BMW.
2024: The 20th BMW PGA Championship and the third BMW M5 Touring.
The 20th BMW PGA Championship is just around the corner and there’s a lot to look forward to. Expect fierce competition, another star-studded Pro-Am and a Championship Village filled with BMW’s latest and greatest models, including the all-new third generation BMW M5 Touring, which makes its UK premiere at Wentworth.
