FRIENDS is an iconic drama series that first premiered in 1994. Soon after its pilot episode, the show won many hearts all around the world. Eventually, FRIENDS joined the club of the most-watched television dramas of all time. This amazing show features six youngsters who are struggling in their earlier twenties. They are struggling with their jobs, love affairs, heartbreaks, etc.

Apart from the characters and the show itself, have you ever thought about its namesake logo “F.R.I.E.N.D.S”? This trademark logo comes with colorful dots between each letter. Even though it looks quite simple, it has made fans read meaning into them. With 236 episodes, this drama series lasted for ten years starting from September 1994. On its final airing in May 2004, the wordmark entertained about 52 million viewers. Since then, the logo and the show became a household name.

After so many years, the iconic logo, characters, and the show are becoming popular after the FRIENDS reunion. They are the favorite among all the age groups from youngsters to adults. You’ll find these young adults wearing clothes with the FRIENDS logo besides enjoying the show on streaming platforms. Since FRIENDS is quite popular among the audience, fans want to know about its logo as well. So, here is everything to know about the FRIENDS logo:

FRIENDS Logo Evolution

In all these years, the FRIENDS logo was updated just once. However, the update did not affect the logo’s look in any way. It’s good that it has undergone a minor redesign for a unique and attractive logo. Let’s know more about the changes below:

The Original FRIENDS Logo From 1994 To 2004

friends logo

A fancy wordmark logotype led it to popularity for the ten years that the drama series lasted. It has six colorful dots with a custom typeface. The letters were written in white with a black background. Interestingly, these colorful dots between the letters represent the six main characters – Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, Ross, Rachael, and Monica.

The FRIENDS Anniversary Logo In 2019

friends logo in friends 25th anniversary

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the show, the update took effect in 2019. The letters became cleaner and more prominent. Besides that, the positions of the colorful dots were changed. The original logo has a rectangle frame above it. However, in its updated version, the logo was enclosed the rectangle frame inside four curved lines. Also, there were vignettes at the end.

The Elements Of FRIENDS Logo

The FRIENDS trademark is unique as well as simple. You’ll find a typeface and colors in the original FRIENDS logo. Undoubtedly, the designers of the logo used the colors in creative and appealing ways. You’ll come across a frame and some curved lines in the updated design. If you did not notice, these elements do not show the wordmark.

The Colors Of FRIENDS Logo

1) red color.

In the FRIENDS logo, there are two red dots. Red is the color of sunshine, passion, love, and desire. This color also signifies aggression and danger. Without a doubt, the series entertained us with some of these intense emotions. Also, you can also link the color with Ross and Rachel’s umbrellas in the opening credit scene.

2) Yellow Color

The yellow color signifies happiness, energy, freshness, and caution. At the beginning of the show, Monica and Phoebe had yellow umbrellas. This color perfectly showed the moods of Monica and Phoebe. For instance, Phoebe looks fresh and Monica is happy going.

3) Blue Color

The blue color is the color of faith, loyalty, and confidence. Besides that, it also means calmness and peacefulness. The logotype has two blue dots that showed the loyal and faithful relationship between Joey and Chandler. They held blue color umbrellas in opening credits that resonate with the color of the sea.

The Font Of FRIENDS Logo

FRIENDS used a font called Gabriel Weiss which is quite fancy and looks handwritten. It’s a clean font that is readable, clear, bold, and memorable. Though it’s closer to its third decade, it is also versatile and modern. When you like the drama of the series, why won’t you like the font?

Symbol And Shape Of FRIENDS

1) a square.

The FRIENDS logo of its anniversary comes with a rectangular frame. When used in branding, a rectangle conveys the feeling of stability and balance. Besides that, it also depicts professionalism, strength, and honesty. Some members exhibited these vibes in their quest to learn how the real-world functions. On the other hand, some of them aligned with some negative emotions.

2) Curved Lines

Again, the FRIENDS logo of its anniversary comes with four curved lines. A curved line is a softer design element and protects the frame at the four ends. Some positive emotions that it evokes are safety, comfort, and calmness that we feel after watching the show.

Why Does FRIENDS Logo Work?

The iconic logo works because it is clean, beautiful, and unique. Besides that, it has met the rules of logo design, that is, versatile, timeless, unique, simple, and memorable.

1) Uniqueness

In the series industry, the FRIENDS logo is distinct from other brands. There is no identical logotype of FRIENDS. With this rarity, it’s easy for fans to spot it from the crowd. That’s a powerful marketing tool because fans can’t mistake it for another emblem.

2) Simplicity

The FRIENDS logo has a modest design that makes it an effective trademark. With no elaborate graphic elements, the design is clean that would not confuse fans with its personality. Fans can describe it with little thinking and can notice it from afar.

3) Versatile

The FRIENDS logotype is versatile with its fewer design elements. Without losing its quality, it can fit any marketing medium. The layout of the logo is flexible enough so that it can scale through with excellence.

4) Memorable

The design of the logo has created a lasting impression on the minds of fans with its sleekness and attractiveness. That is why it is easy for fans to recall every single detail of the logo. Interestingly, the six dots are also quite memorable when it comes to the logo.

5) Timeless

Over the decades, only unique logos can keep up their popularity. The FRIENDS signature logo is among one of them that can brag about this achievement. Even now, the trademark logo is creating lots of popularity among fans.

Designer Of The FRIENDS Logo

Considering the simplicity of the logo design and the question on most peoples’ lips, it’s a fair inquiry. For designing the FRIENDS iconic signature, Deborah Nayee owns the credit. The sleek design shows her adept skills, attention to detail, and professionalism.

Reason Behind FRIENDS Logo Dots

The six colorful dots between the letters in the logo have sparked exciting debates among fans. Some think that it represents the six unforgettable characters. While others think that their positions make the word appear as an acronym. Besides that, some of them also feel that they stand for the umbrellas used in the opening scenes.

Well, according to the executive producer of the show, Kelvin S. Bright, the dots mean nothing in particular. To make the wordmark look friendlier and memorable, those six dots were used as design elements. Undoubtedly, it made the logo more unique and fun.

FRIENDS Logo Summary

The iconic FRIENDS logo proved that simple logos are the most effective. It is enough to grab the attention of fans instantly. The logo is clean yet powerful and has contributed to the popularity of the show. Think carefully about the colors, fonts, and icons when you intend to create your logo. These graphic elements have meaningful emotions that align with your brand’s persona. After more than two decades, the FRIENDS signature is still trending. The reason is just it has fewer design elements that make it readable, timeless, scalable, and noticeable.

Friends Logo Design – History, Meaning and Evolution

Friends logo cover

The friend’s sitcom is considered one of the best shows on American TV. You could call it an aging icon really, as it was one of the major elements of 90s culture. One might imply that the first episode has been shot but a few days ago. However, it was a long time since the first season was on the air.

Friends Logo History

The first series was shown on the NBC channel in 1994 , in the same year the logotype was designed by Deborah Naysee and since this time it has never been changed . It was this year that people all around the world began to watch the story of six friends trying to get settled. The series ended about 10 years ago, but google still shows search results for “the friends” on top. We all love the series and that is why this article is about the friend’s logo and its peculiarities.

Create your own logo with Turbologo logo maker. It takes less than 5 minutes and no design skills needed.

Friends Logo Font – A symbol of an age

Deborah Nayee is the one who designed the logo . And nothing reminds me of the 90s better than that inscription in the friend’s logo. Modern companies choose clear types . And most series can boast expensive and cool looking logos nowadays. But the friends have soft and brief handwriting for a logo and the word itself is a more endearing one. It looks cozy or even homemade. And is just what the designers were aiming for.

Friends logo font

So, what is the type of TV show logo? It is actually a special font called “ Gabriel Weiss’ Friends ”. Many exclusive clothes manufacturers often use the font to design unique t-shirts with “The Friends” inscription. They sometimes change the inscription, but the font still remains. That is why the lettering is still popular.

Secret meaning of dots in the Friends tv show logo

Series fans kept asking themselves about the meaning of colorful dots between the letters of the series logo. Some were saying it was an acronym. However, any phrase didn’t quite do the trick. And nobody could tell that for sure until now. It is 25 years after the beginning of the sitcom that we finally reveal the truth.

Friends logo dots

The series creators announced that it was but a stylistic solution. This dots’ composition symbolizes the number of the main characters – six friends .The colorful dots make the logo more friendly, pleasant and memorable. It is not just another word typed in black letters anymore. It is actually a bright and attractive logo. And there also is a tiny hint if you look closer. The colors of the dots correspond to the colors of umbrellas that characters put up in the series intro.

Friends font, with Regular font. Examples of this font can be found on AZFonts. The Friends font supports: English, Italian, German, Polish, French.

The logo was created by talented designer Deborah Nighy. On the one hand, a simple, but so elegant logo, brought great popularity to the show.

Of course the logo is copyrighted. Warner Brothers owns the copyright, anyone who wants to use the work will have to discuss all the nuances, otherwise litigation cannot be avoided.

The Friends logo looks elegant today as well. This is a black inscription on a white background, and there are bright dots between the letters.

Travel logo with the title 'Brand Identity for a Spanish restaurant chain'

Brand Identity for a Spanish restaurant chain

“La Brasería de la Viña” is a chain of fine road restaurants in Spain. The first restaurant was opened in Ribera del Duero region in Spain. It is one of the most recognised wine origin denominations in the world. "La Brasería de la Viña" means "the vineyard brasserie". I crafted a clean and charismatic wordmark inspired by the vineyard landscapes. The new identity tells a compelling story of a restaurant & store proud of their roots and aiming allways to offer a pleasant experience. The Brand Voice still has a casual and accessible message (not too luxurious/ fancy as the expensive city restaurants), but at the same time it is quite elegant and sophisticated. This convince clients that they will get the most of the money spent during their trip. A great objective was to design a logo that is easily recognizable from distance, easy to memorize and works well at any scale.

People are extending their vacations, and eco-travel experts say it could be more sustainable

  • Tourists globally are spending an average of one more day at destinations compared to 2019.
  • Longer vacations are more sustainable, reducing carbon emissions from fewer flights.
  • Sustainability experts recommend fewer, longer trips to minimize environmental impact.

Insider Today

Worldwide, vacations are getting longer.

According to a recent study by Mastercard Economics Institute , tourists around the globe are spending an average of one more day in destinations compared to 2019. In Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, people are extending their trips for two days longer than before the pandemic.

This is good news — not just for vacationers — but for the health of the planet, as travel can be harmful to the environment .

Related stories

"We are in the biggest race of our time — race to net-zero carbon emissions," Paloma Zapata, the CEO of Sustainable Travel International, previously told Business Insider. "And when we travel, we consume a lot of resources."

Fewer, longer trips are more sustainable

Sustainability experts previously told BI that frequent, short trips are more harmful to the environment than fewer, longer trips .

"Fewer but longer trips mean fewer air miles, more money in local hands, and you'll have a more relaxing trip, too," Justin Francis, the cofounder and CEO of the UK-based trip evaluation company Responsible Travel , said.

According to the US Environmental Protection Agency , 9% of transportation carbon emissions  in 2022 came from air travel, and 57% came from light-duty vehicles. And according to Zapata, flights make up at least half of a trip's total carbon emissions.

If those extending their vacations are also taking fewer trips, they're ultimately booking fewer flights, reducing carbon emissions in the process.

This is especially true for those traveling long distances, Jessica Blotter, CEO and cofounder of Kind Travel , a public benefit corporation, told BI. She suggests stretching long-distance trips to maximize the experience so you won't crave another journey anytime soon.

"Booking multiple, long-haul trips per year is not sustainable or carbon-friendly," she said.

If you want to be more eco-friendly while at your destination, experts also recommend staying at sustainable hotels , dining at locally-owned restaurants, and shopping for souvenirs crafted by locals.

You know those topics that can prompt your friend to talk your ear off at a mere mention? For me, it’s my favorite books, feminism, Baldur’s Gate 3 — and credit cards .

I’ve been writing about credit cards since 2019. I’ve written about more than 100 credit cards over the last five years, and used 10 different cards myself.  Apparently, writing about cards for eight hours a day isn’t enough because I give out free consultations whenever someone in my proximity brings up the subject. I’m afraid I can’t help it. Credit cards have been a key part of my financial life, from helping me build credit to allowing me to book travel I wouldn’t be able to afford otherwise. It brings me joy to help others achieve the same results.

Several of my friends have asked me for credit card advice in the past few months, and I’ve been thrilled to help. These women all come from different backgrounds and had different goals for the cards they wanted. Here are the card recommendations I offered them, and which could be helpful for others in similar circumstances.

A simple credit card for a credit newbie

My friend Cat, 21, is an army logistics officer in Tacoma, Washington. She has no credit history as she never got around to getting a  credit card in college . Cat found the number of options to be overwhelming and didn’t understand how the process worked. With credit being such a vital part of a person’s financial health, she soon saw the consequences of neglecting it. When she applied for an apartment, what could be a $500 deposit became $2,000 because she had no credit history.

Now that she was considering moving from her current apartment, Cat decided she was ready for her first credit card . Naturally, I had a few suggestions ready.

Discover it® Secured Credit Card

Lack of credit history can be a barrier to a successful credit card application. A card issuer can’t peek at your credit habits and determine how much of a borrowing risk you are.

With a secured card , you can minimize that risk for the issuer. This type of card requires a refundable deposit which then becomes your credit line. Essentially, you’re borrowing against the money you give the bank. For that reason, it’s easier to qualify for a secured card even if your credit leaves a lot to be desired—or if you have no credit score. In every other way, a secured card works just like any other credit card, including the impact on your credit. Plus, you can get the deposit back when you upgrade to an unsecured card or close the account.

The Discover it® Secured Credit Card is always a go-to recommendation in this category. It charges no annual fee or any hidden fees (unlike some of its competitors) and earns cash back rewards. Namely, you get 2 percent back on up to $1,000 in combined gas station and restaurant spending each quarter (then 1 percent) and 1 percent back on other purchases. Like other Discover cards , it has a generous welcome offer: the issuer matches all the cash back you earn at the end of your first year.

After seven months with the card, Discover begins to automatically review your account every month to see if you qualify to upgrade to an unsecured card. If you do, the issuer will refund your deposit.

Finally, Discover offers free access to your FICO credit score from TransUnion, one of the credit bureaus . This can be handy for someone building credit but not looking to sign up for a credit monitoring service.

Capital One Platinum Credit Card

I started my own credit-rebuilding journey with Capital One, an issuer that still dominates my wallet with three Capital One cards to my name. Needless to say, I feel confident recommending the bank’s products.

A deposit isn’t something people get excited about, so I wanted to give Cat an option that doesn’t require one. I suggested the Capital One Platinum Credit Card , a no-frills card with no annual fees. Sure, it doesn’t offer any rewards, and the perks are minimal. But for someone so new to credit, this simplicity might be just the thing.

I also like that the Capital One Platinum provides automatic credit line reviews after six months with the card. A higher credit line makes it easier to keep your credit utilization ratio low, which is great news for your credit. Credit utilization is how much of your average credit you’re using, expressed as a percentage.

Additionally, Capital One lets you track your VantageScore from TransUnion with CreditWise. The service is available to everyone, not just Capital One cardholders. However, I believe it’s more likely that a person will regularly check their credit if it’s accessible right in their credit card app.

Ultimately, Cat decided the Capital One Platinum was the right choice — exactly because it was very “bare-bones” and highly accessible. Let her journey to good credit be swift and easy!

A starter travel card for a casual traveler

Katrina is a 22-year-old immigrant. She’s been building her credit for one and a half years now and already has a good credit score (a FICO score of 670 to 739). Katrina works at a coffee shop in the Detroit area and travels two to three times a year, often within Michigan. While she and her husband typically drive, they do hop on an occasional flight from time to time. On their trips, they stay in hotels.

Katrina reached out to me contemplating her first travel credit card . She asked me about cards that would allow her to redeem rewards for hotels and flights and possibly offer hotel benefits or discounted rates.

While hotel credit cards are the best for free nights and upgrades, many of them are co-branded, meaning they tie you to a single hotel loyalty program. I wanted to suggest something that’d give Katrina the flexibility to choose properties based on her budget and other factors rather than the brand name.

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred is an excellent travel credit card for beginners and frequent travelers alike. With its rewards system, you can earn points quickly. You’ll get 3X points on dining (including eligible delivery services), 3X points on online grocery purchases (except for those at Target, Walmart and wholesale clubs) and 3X points on select streaming services. Plus, the card earns 5x total points on Lyft rides (through March 31, 2025), 5X points on travel purchases you make through the Chase Travel online portal and 2X points on all other travel purchases. All other purchases earn 1X points.

The issuer’s definition of “travel” is rather broad — which presents more opportunities to earn rewards. It includes over a dozen types of merchants, from airlines, hotels and car rental agencies to campgrounds, certain public transport and even parking lots and garages.

But what I like most of all is how easy it is to get value out of these rewards. With the Chase Sapphire Preferred, you can redeem your points at 1.25 cents apiece through Chase Travel. This is an outstanding value no other issuer portal offers, and it applies to air travel, hotels, car rentals and cruises. That means Katrina could earn and redeem rewards on hotels, as well as on airfare when she flies. She could also stretch that value by moving her points to certain transfer partners . However, the latter isn’t something I’d expect a new travel cardholder to get into immediately.

Additionally, the card offers $50 in annual statement credits for hotel stays booked through Chase Travel. Since Katrina mentioned she and her husband stayed at hotels at least a couple times a year, this perk would be easy for them to take advantage of.

That said, the Chase Sapphire Preferred has a $95 annual fee, which can be a deterrent for an aspiring travel cardholder. Indeed, in Katrina’s words, I “had” her until I mentioned the cost. She preferred to avoid annual fees, and I didn’t want to insist that the card all but paid for itself . The aversion to annual fees can be strong, and while those are prevalent in the travel credit card space, I knew exactly what to recommend next.

Discover it® Miles

I still wanted to suggest something flexible and with enough rewards-earning potential. The Discover it Miles fit the bill.

The card has no annual fee and earns an unlimited 1.5X miles on all purchases. Like all other Discover cards, it also matches all the rewards you earn in the first year with the card. For instance, if you spend $10,000, you’ll earn 15,000 miles, and the issuer will give you another 15,000 miles after your first account anniversary.

I’m a big fan of the Discover it Miles . I call it a cash back card with a travel twist because the mile value remains at 1 cent apiece across all redemption options. The issuer has no travel portal or transfer partners. Instead, you can use your rewards to reimburse yourself for recent travel purchases — or redeem them for cash back without sacrificing the mile value. Alternatively, you can spend them on purchases you make on Amazon.com or using PayPal.

Not having to worry about annual fees or inconsistent rewards value can make it easier to get into travel credit cards . It seemed to pique Katrina’s interest as well, and she decided to apply for the Discover it Miles.

A premium credit card for comfortable travel

Jennifer, 42, is a communications professional in Seattle. Her credit is in great shape and lives in the “very good” territory (a FICO range of 740 to 799). When she reached out to me, she was looking for a credit card that would allow her to travel internationally in comfort. Another friend had offered to refer her to The Platinum Card® from American Express , but Jennifer wanted to do more research.

Indeed, the Amex Platinum is known for premium travel perks. It offers extensive airport lounge benefits that provide access to more than 1,400 lounges worldwide across multiple networks. These include Centurion and Escape lounges, Priority Pass (enrollment required), Delta Sky Club, Lufthansa and Plaza Premium lounges.

On top of that, cardmembers receive a $100 statement credit for Global Entry or up to $85 for TSA PreCheck after applying. These programs allow for expedited airport security. Global Entry lets you pass U.S. customs screening quicker when entering the U.S. TSA PreCheck is designed to shorten a security screening experience when you travel domestically. Note that Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck by default.

Jennifer was aware of the high annual fee ($695) and the fact she could leverage multiple annual statement credits to offset it. However, I encourage caution when relying on credits to ensure the card is worthwhile. It’s all too easy to get wrapped up in using them to make the card pay for itself — and end up regularly making purchases that weren’t a part of your normal budget before. The right card for you compliments your spending habits without altering them.

So, I thought I’d suggest another option for Jennifer to consider.

Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card

As it turned out, Jennifer already had the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card . It was her oldest card which she’d been putting all her expenses on for 11 years.

The Venture offers 5X miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel and 2X miles on all other purchases. For a $95 annual fee, the card provides up to a $100 credit for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck and a $50 experience credit on Lifestyle Collection hotel stays.

Naturally, I had to suggest Jennifer look into the Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card . It’s an obvious upgrade from the Venture — and, coincidentally, my favorite credit card at the moment. It offers 10X miles on hotels and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel, 5X miles on flights booked through Capital One Travel and 2X miles on all other purchases. You also get the same Global Entry or TSA PreCheck credits you would with the Venture.

As for lounge perks, the Venture X provides access to more than 1,300 lounges internationally. That includes Priority Pass and Plaza Premium Group lounges, as well all three Capital One lounges .

The lounge access coverage isn’t as extensive as what you’d get with the Amex Platinum. However, the annual fee is also only $395 — a whopping $300 less than on the Amex Platinum. Moreover, it’s much easier to offset. The Venture X cardholders receive a $300 annual travel credit for Capital One Travel bookings and 10,000 bonus miles each card anniversary (worth $100 toward travel). With how expensive flying is these days, I tend to take advantage of both credits while paying for a single trip.

Even better, Jennifer wouldn’t have to change her spending habits to get the most out of the Venture X. She’d also be using the same travel portal and list of transfer partners as before.

All that was enough to persuade her. Apologies to her friend who didn’t get to earn their Amex referral bonus .

How to pick the best credit card for you

As you can see, my friends come from different walks of life. They have different goals and priorities when it comes to credit cards. I don’t have a universal card recommendation that I could offer everyone because people’s credit needs and circumstances are as unique as the people themselves.

Generally, you want to ask yourself the following questions as you’re choosing a new card :

  • What’s my credit score? Credit card issuers have score requirements for each of their products. It’s a good idea to check your credit before you start card shopping. This way, you know what you’re likely to qualify for.
  • What do I want from a card? You probably have a goal in mind for your new card — and that should help you narrow your options. For instance, if you want to earn free travel, you need a generous travel credit card. If you’re planning a large purchase, a card with a long 0% APR period is a solid choice. It helps to be intentional in your credit card search.
  • How do I spend my money? Another thing to consider is your spending habits. This can impact your best card options in a few ways. For example, if you think you’ll carry a balance, you might need a low-interest credit card . On the other hand, if you’re choosing a cash back card , its bonus rewards structure should match the top spending categories in your budget.
  • What are the benefits — and fees? Once you have several cards to pick from, it’s time to compare. Consider the rewards and perks but pay attention to the fees as well. These can include annual fees, balance transfer fees and foreign transaction fees, to name a few. Be especially careful with cards for bad credit — some lesser-known issuers like to sneak in high fees that add up quickly.

When you’re looking for a credit card, don’t rush. Dedicate plenty of time to research to make sure your new card checks all the boxes before you apply. Unless you have a credit card expert for a friend. In that case, also ask the friend. I assure you, they’ll be happy to help.

Kit Bernardi,

Whether you are an experienced camper and avid RVer like me, or planning your first camping trip ever, staying in campgrounds makes living in nature easier. They bridge the raw beauty of the great outdoors and the indoor comforts and conveniences of home.

According to IBISWorld, an organization that provides industry research, there are more than 15,000 campgrounds in the country. Each one offers different services and amenities.

In the last two decades RV ownership has increased 62 percent, according to a 2021 Go RVing demographic profile of RV owners. Owners are almost equally divided between those over 55 and those younger, the profile notes. The report identified seven types of RV owners. More than half of the RV owners were older than 55 in five of the seven groups.

The same profile indicated that when RVers are searching for campground accommodations, state parks are the most popular at 63 percent, followed by private campgrounds at 53 percent, and national parks at 35 percent.

No matter the type of campground, guests usually share not only the starry skies above, but public facilities including bathrooms, bathhouses, laundries, rec rooms and recreational spaces. Only you can determine your comfort using them.

When choosing a campground, first take an honest assessment of your personal standards for feeling at home living outdoors and compare that to what the campground provides.

To help you decide what is right for you, here are campground lifestyle tips and insights into campground operations.

Booking a campsite

A campground’s surrounding natural environment influences what services are available. Before booking campsites, you need to understand descriptions of them. Changing campsites upon arrival can be difficult, especially in busy summer months.

Park Ranger Ryan Koepke oversees the Indiana Dunes National Park’s Dunewood Campground’s bookings and operations. Explaining campsite terminology, he says “full RV hookup” campsites have electricity, water, sewerage and possibly cable TV. Full hookup campsites at national parks and state parks are very limited.

For the term “dry campsite,” Koepke says it can be confusing. These may have electricity, or not. “Primitive campsites,” often tent sites, generally do not have any services.

All campgrounds have either pit, port-a-pot (portable) or flush toilets. Many campgrounds have pet-designated campsites and accessible sites , often with paved areas.

Campgrounds use online reservation systems. Recreation.gov is the U.S. government’s centralized booking system. Websites and apps such as Campendium, Go Camping America, Go RVing, The Dyrt and Roadtrippers provide details and compare public and private campgrounds across the country.

Need more information? Call or email campgrounds. Generally, privately owned campgrounds also take reservations over the phone.

Comfort and cleanliness

To feel most comfortable when camping, Koepke says, “Keep your campsite clean and use common sense.”

Preparing meals outdoors naturally attracts critters. “While seeing wildlife is one of the top reasons to camp, do not invite animals into your campsite by feeding them or leaving food and packaging out,” Koepke says. “Store food in the car, trailer, RV or secure cooler.”

For example, I cover my campsite’s picnic table with a reusable, washable tablecloth. Always dispose of garbage in the campground’s dumpsters. Wash dishes and cookware in hot water, ideally with biodegradable soap, in outdoor sinks attached to park bathhouses.

All well-run campgrounds clean bathhouses and bathrooms daily at designated hours posted on their doors. You can plan your personal hygiene routine accordingly. My bathhouse essentials are rubber flip-flops, a small bathmat and a shower caddy. Often shower stalls lack enough hooks, so I bring an over-the-door one to prevent clothes and towels from touching the floor.

If the more rustic park camping experience is outside your comfort zone, stay at privately owned mom-and-pop campgrounds or national chain campgrounds such as Sun Outdoors, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park and Kampgrounds of America (KOA). Their services and amenities can include restaurants, swimming pools, arcades, scheduled activities and golf cart rentals.

In addition to RV sites, many private campgrounds rent accommodations such as basic cabins and yurts, even tricked-out RVs and tiny houses . Usually, you bring your own bedding and towels.

Safety and security

Whether camping with friends, family or alone, everyone wants to feel safe.

Taking time to familiarize yourself with the campground facilities and natural surroundings helps. Therefore, it’s always wise to arrive close to check-in time, usually in the afternoon, so staff is readily available to answer questions and you can easily see the entire operation in daylight.

Wi-Fi signal strengths vary by campground. If a consistent, strong connection is a must, bring a mobile hot spot or go into town to use a library or coffee shop connection.

An outdoorswoman living in Granby, Colorado, Gaylene Ore, 60, has backpacked, tent camped and RV camped around the country for a total of 38 years, and still does it all. Some of Ore’s favorite camping trips are with girlfriends and fellow members of national, women-only camper organizations Girl Camper and Sisters on the Fly. She joins her RV camping girlfriends at Colorado’s Mueller State Park and Wolford Mountain Reservoir, among others.

When accessing campgrounds, Ore always looks for clean bathrooms and an easily reachable campground host on site. “I feel most comfortable in campgrounds located within walking distance of trailheads for hiking and near a small town with restaurants and medical services available, just in case.”

National Park System campground hosts undergo federal background checks, Koepke says. “If necessary, hosts work with federal law enforcement park rangers who patrol campgrounds 24/7 and handle issues such as thefts, disturbances and emergencies.”

At private campgrounds, expect more security features, such as well-lit, paved or crushed gravel pathways, larger-sized signage, perimeter fences and security cameras. Lifeguards may be on duty at swimming pools. Night managers stay on site. Bathhouses often have security entrance code keypads and, instead of curtains, locking doors on shower stalls.

Community spirit

Campers are friendly, so it is easy to meet new people. Private campgrounds often plan themed social events, host activities and invite local musicians to entertain guests.

Star party set up at Marathon Motel RV Park

On a recent RV camping trip out West with my husband, we stargazed with a resident, amateur astronomer at the Marathon Motel & RV Park an hour from artsy Marfa, Texas. While staying at New Mexico’s Alamogordo White Sands KOA Journey campground, we joined town residents listening to country bluegrass group The Jammers.

KOA franchise owners Sandy and Kelly Rodwick, 52 and 56, respectively, bought the 8.5-acre KOA campground after working in corporate America. “To stay at a campground is to become part of an instant community of people who love to travel and experience new things,” says Sandy Rodwick. “We learn a lot from one another.”

Founded in March 2021 by Ali and Eric Rasmussen, Spacious Skies Campgrounds strives to expand the meaning of campground community. Each of the privately owned company’s 15 campgrounds in 10 states along the East Coast is designed to reflect distinct regional culture. Guests 50-plus comprise most of their company’s camping population. All the campgrounds institute rules ensuring guests of diverse backgrounds and beliefs feel welcome.

“Our 150 staff members undergo diversity training earning the Unity Blaze Certification created by the Black Folks Camp Too organization,” says Ali Rasmussen, an experienced camper of Cuban American descent. “We are one of the most vocal companies in the campground space instituting inclusivity policies.”

Campgrounds are common ground we share. Determining in advance of a camping trip what makes you feel comfortable in the outdoors helps you and everyone else at the campground be happy campers.

Camping health and safety tips

  • Pack essentials.  Flashlight or headlamp, rain gear, reusable water bottle, energizing snacks, sanitizing wipes, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, insect repellent, cellphone battery chargers, sunglasses, medications and a first aid kit.
  • Take precautions.  Always be aware of your surroundings. Don’t leave valuables like phones and purses out to tempt passersby. At night and when away from the campsite, lock up vehicles and bicycles. At the campground, use only its password-protected Wi-Fi connection. Store an extra set of car and trailer keys separately from the vehicles. When camping solo, inform someone of your travel plans. Check in with the campground host from time to time.
  • Be a good neighbor.  Respect other campers’ privacy. Do not blast music or televisions. Follow campground quiet hours rules. Keep pets leashed. If you see or experience something concerning, inform campground management. Clean up after yourself.

Nearly 44 Million Travelers Leaving Town for Unofficial Start of Summer

Second highest memorial day holiday travel forecast since aaa began tracking in 2000.

friends travel logo

WASHINGTON, DC (May 13, 2024) – AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period*. This year’s total number of travelers is a 4% increase over last year and comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

friends travel logo

Road trips are expected to set a record. AAA projects 38.4 million people will travel by car over Memorial Day weekend, the highest number for that holiday since AAA began tracking in 2000. The number of drivers this year is up 4% compared to last year and 1.9% higher than in 2019. Traveling by car is appealing for many people because of the convenience and flexibility it provides. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand , with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

This Memorial Day weekend drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.  Pump prices rose this spring but have held somewhat steady in recent weeks. Prices may creep higher as the summer driving season gets underway. The wildcard remains the cost of oil, and unlike last year, there are now two wars – in the Middle East and Ukraine – that could roil the oil market.

Airports are bracing for a spike in travelers. AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019. This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11. This Memorial Day weekend, air ticket prices are comparable to last year. AAA booking data shows a 1% to 2% increase in prices for domestic flights. Several factors play into how much travelers pay for airfare, including destination, number of stops, and fare class. For example, passengers who book nonstop flights with seat selection and carry-on bags included will likely pay more than those who select basic economy with a layover.

Nearly two million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. AAA projects 1.9 million people will take these other modes of transportation, an increase of 5.6% compared to last year. “This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.”

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX.

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

For example, Atlanta routes = ET and Los Angeles routes = PT

Top Destinations

This Memorial Day weekend, travelers are seeking theme parks and entertainment venues in Orlando, New York, Las Vegas, and Southern California. Seattle, Anchorage, and Vancouver rank high because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Florida beaches and cruise ports will also be packed. European cities dominate the international list. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

Travel Trends

As travelers make plans for summer and beyond, AAA Travel has identified the following trends:

  • Bucket Lists : Travelers taking once-in-a-lifetime trips
  • Milestones : Families booking anniversary, retirement, and family reunion trips
  • Asia : More travelers interested in visiting Asia, especially Japan
  • Solo Trips : More people, especially women, interested in traveling by themselves
  • Luxury Vacations : More travelers seeking high-end cruises and tours
  • Trains : Many travelers interested in rail vacations across New England, Canada, and Europe
  • Adventure in Nature : Travelers booking trips to Antarctica, Africa, and South Pacific

  Travel Agent Survey

A recent survey of AAA travel agents highlights topics travelers are frequently discussing when booking trips:

  • Travel Insurance : 51 % of agents say more travelers are interested in protecting their trips
  • 77% of agents say ocean cruises
  • 70% of agents say all-inclusive vacations
  • 67% of agents say river cruises

Holiday Travel Forecast Methodology

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of April 15, 2024.

*Memorial Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Memorial Day holiday travel period is defined as the five-day period from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27, 2024.

AAA Travel Agent Survey Methodology

AAA clubs distributed surveys to a random sample of their travel agents between March 18 and March 29, 2024 to understand recent traveler trends over the past 60 days. 186 AAA agent responses were collected from 13 AAA clubs (representing 97% of AAA membership overall as of February 2024).

4 dead as severe storms hit Houston area; hundreds of thousands lose power in Texas

Emergency crews in southeast Texas were clearing debris and assessing flooding on Friday after powerful storms tore through the state , killing at least four people and knocking out power to nearly 800,000 customers.

The winds — which reached 100 mph — were reminiscent of 2008's Hurricane Ike , one of the costliest natural disasters in American history, Houston Mayor John Whitmire said in a briefing Thursday. A widespread 3 to 6 inches of rain fell north of Houston, with one of the highest totals reaching around 6.9 inches in 24 hours near Romayor.

The storm also battered New Orleans overnight, with severe thunderstorms and flooding possible again through Saturday morning, according to the local branch of the National Weather Service .

In Texas, the destruction was evident even before sunrise, with high winds tearing out windows of high-rise buildings in downtown Houston and inundating the region with flooding. Streets were littered with glass, electrical lines and other detritus.

“I know that many people lived through, and are still living through, scary situations with the terrible strong winds that blew across our county tonight," Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said in a statement Friday morning.

"Damage assessments are ongoing, and we cannot know how long it will take to clear debris without those assessments completed, but from initial reports the debris looks very significant," Hidalgo said.

Classes were canceled for the 400,000 students in the Houston Independent School District.

Officials urged all but essential employees to work from home if possible, and the Houston Police Department told residents to avoid traveling downtown.

Two of the four people who died in Texas were killed by falling trees, while a third died when a crane blew over, Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said at a news briefing. No information was given about the fourth. Whitmire said a possible fifth death is being investigated, but it’s not yet clear if it was related to the weather.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott thanked emergency personnel in a statement, saying work is ongoing to assist communities affected by the storms.

“Our hearts are with the families and loved ones of those who tragically lost their lives due to severe weather in Southeast Texas, and we remain in contact with local officials to do everything we can to protect Texans and help our communities recover,” Abbott said.

At one point, more than 900,000 customers were without power statewide; that remained true for around 670,000 as of 3 p.m. CT,  according to poweroutage.us . Nearly all of those were in Houston’s Harris County.

Heat and humidity in the city will ramp up into the weekend, which could lead to health concerns if power is not restored quickly. Temperatures could be as high as 91 degrees with a heat index of 97.

Across Houston, photos and videos on social media showed intense flooding and downed trees, as well as toppled electrical towers and power lines .

In a video posted to Facebook , rain was seen leaking into Minute Maid Park, where the Houston Astros play. Another video showed baseball fans leaving the stadium amid the bad weather.

Strong winds appeared to have blown off roof panels at a Hyatt Regency Hotel in Houston, a video posted to X showed. Other footage shared on the platform showed blown out windows in a building in the city's Wells Fargo Plaza.

Severe Weather in Houston Texas

Whitmire described downtown Houston as a “mess” and warned that “many roads are impassible due to downed power lines, debris, and fallen trees.”

Firefighters were removing live wires from Route 290 and most city traffic lights were down, he added.

In Louisiana, the severe weather knocked out electricity for some 215,000 customers, many in and around New Orleans. Around 115,000 remained without power as of Friday morning.

A swath of the southeast coast, stretching from Louisiana, through Mississippi, Alabama and into the Florida Panhandle, was under a flood watch early Friday.

The National Weather Service said in an afternoon update that unsettled weather, including the possibility of excessive rainfall and severe thunderstorms, will persist across the Southeast through Saturday.

Around 7 million people along the central Gulf Coast remain under flood watches.

“A few tornadoes, scattered damaging winds, and hail all appear possible over the central/eastern Gulf Coast area,” according to the National Weather Service.

The agency also noted a risk of severe thunderstorms in portions of the northern Plains through Friday evening.
