Private and Luxury India Tours

Any tour to India is sure to be an adventure. That is inherent in the nature of this land, which is at once mind-boggling and inspiring, imperfect and incredible.

From north to south, India’s geography is captivating. At hill stations in  Himachal Pradesh  wake up to views of the snow-capped peaks of the mighty  Himalayas . The peninsula of India has a 4,600-mile-long coastline with a diverse range of sites:  Goa ’s sandy beaches, the mangroves of the  Sundarbans , historic seaside temples at  Mamallapuram . And there’s  Kanyakumari , the southernmost tip of India, where the Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean, and Bay of Bengal meet.

You may have heard the cliché that India is sheer chaos, and perhaps it is. But there is a method to its madness. Leave the uncovering of that pattern to Enchanting Travels’ experts, experienced in organizing private tours to India. From start to finish, all you need to do is trust, keep your mind open to having a blast, and drinking lots of chai.

Whichever direction you travel, India’s history, seen through its magnificent monuments, will leave you humbled and awestruck. In the southern state of  Tamil Nadu  witness religiosity and ritual at  Madurai ’s  Meenakshi Temple . Go west where  Rajasthan ’s Mehrangarh Fort, towering over the blue city of  Jodhpur , is a both palace and symbol of a medieval military tradition. In northern India the glory days of the  Mughal Empire  come alive in the monuments of places like  Fatehpur Sikri  and  Delhi . Plan at least two weeks to capture some of the marvels of this remarkable country, even if right now all you really want to do is to visit the  Taj Mahal .

Our experts can advise you on the  best time to visit India , what to see or do based on your interests, and create a personalized travel experience for you. Get in touch with us for your customized, obligation-free itinerary.

Everything was curated and managed with a high level of care and Manish and his team was always in touch to take care of each and every aspect of the tour. I would recommend them if you wish to travel to India with a tension free attitude. Thanks a lot to MTA and their team who made our trip successful.

India\'s Luxury Golden Triangle with Leopard Safari & Sunrise Taj Mahal Tour

India's Luxury Golden Triangle with Leopard Safari & Sunrise Taj Mahal

We had a fantastic holiday Our Driver Shyam was excellent and took us where we wanted including we paid him for an extra day in Delhi. His recommended restaurants for lunches were always really good. The Hotels exceeded expectations, absolutely first class with good food and fantastic rooms ( albeit a slight glitch in Agra when our driver, tour rep and guide all went to wrong hotel due to some miscommunication). The Trident Hotel in Agra in particular was superb, faultless service, fantastic food, wonderful helpful staff. All our tour guides were wonderful being both friendly and incredibly knowledgeable about the areas we visited. Admittedly the drives are quite long, up to 5 hours including stops, but there is always plenty to see on the side of road and the car provided was perfect and comfortable; we were only two on the tour which made it a quite personal experience. Taj Mahal at sunrise is fantastic but be prepared that they may not accept card payment and its ca £12.50 to get in ( we only just had enough). Well worth arriving early as there are considerably fewer people. Also do make a point of visiting the mini Taj Mahal which is equally beautiful and less frequented. Some minor downsides & advice that did not detract but were learning points:- 1/ Make sure you have small values notes for tipping, when we arrived we only had 200 rupee notes(ca£2) which as I understand is a large tip in India 2/ All tour guides ( & driver) will take you to visit various 'artisan' shops etc., be prepared ( as our driver said) to say NO as they will pressure you in the shops; also be prepared to bargain hard ( we probably did not bargain hard enough) 3/ The Elephant village near Jaipur may cost only £3.50 to get in but then they ask for £40 to feed/touch elephants, per person; we declined 4/ Always carry toilet paper 5/ Split your cash over at least two pockets just in case of pickpockets(although we never had a problem) 6/ Clothes are very cheap, I wish we had taken less and bought more out there! 7/ Some of communications with tour company in India were a little slow to be replied to, so don't expect rapid answers 8/ If having an extra day in Delhi be warned most of civic monuments/museums are closed on Mondays! I would definitely recommend the tour as an introduction to India and if you can add an extra day on the end in Delhi the extra costs for Hotel are very reasonable.

Luxury tour - Maharaja palaces and forts, 5 star and heritage hotels

Based on many good reviews we have chosen Payless Tours to organize our holiday tour in India, and they didn't disappoint us. They were flexible enough to customize the itinerary according to our needs: after seeing Delhi we took the overnight sleeper train to Jodhpur, from there by car Ranakpur, Udaipur, Pushkar, Abhaneri, Fatehpur Sikri, Agra, Orchha, Khajuraho, Varanasi, and finally by plane back to Delhi. Don't be afraid to tell them your specific ideas, they will plan the trip accordingly. They were responsive for any issues, both before and during the trip. We asked for a local SIM card, which we got from them, and it was really practical (like calling the driver, where we are) We had a super driver, who, despite the chaotic Indian traffic conditions, took us safely everywhere. He was always at our disposal - not speaking very much though, so he was not the person, from whom we could get much information about life in India. For the latter there were the local guides on all places, mostly good in their profession. We stayed in very good 4 and 5 star hotels. We highly recommend services of this amazing tour operator.

Two nights in the tropical backwaters of Kerala

With the Western Ghats towering to the east and the Arabian Sea flowing out from the west, Kerala is one of India’s most verdant and beautiful states. Crisscrossing this green lung are the backwaters that snake their way through towns and villages. Teeming with aquatic life and providing an invaluable resource to all who sit on their banks, these waterways have helped create an impossibly lush pocket of India, where palm-fringed beaches and tranquil waterways have earned it the moniker, God’s Own Country.

Where you could stay

Keralan Backwaters

luxury tour in india

Sat on a little peninsula on the western banks of Lake Vembanad, Vismaya is a historic timber house that dates back over three centuries.

Painstaking restored with contemporary luxuries subtly introduced, it is now an exclusive use villa with two bedrooms, a double and a twin, each air conditioned with en suite bathrooms.

The property is surrounded by typically lush Keralan gardens and features an expansive granite swimming pool and peaceful coconut grove with hammocks to soak up serene views across the lake.

Meals – with freshly caught fish bought straight from local fishermen – can be served wherever takes your fancy, be it out on the veranda, in the lounge, poolside or in the gazebo.

From the villa’s private jetty embark on meandering boat tours of the backwaters, or borrow bicycles to explore the surrounding countryside. Village walks can also be arranged as can visits to nearby temples, churches and Alleppey town.

Marari Beach

luxury tour in india

On the shores of the Arabian Sea and close to the famed backwaters of Alleppey, this verdant resort is beautifully placed to explore the best of Kerala.

There are 30 villas set in the sprawling gardens, each a luxurious blend of modern and traditional Keralan design with private pools, lavish bathrooms and walk-in dressing rooms.

A major draw here is the stunning Ayurveda spa which offers a huge range of treatments and tailored wellness programs using age-old practices, with a focus on rejuvenation, stress management and detoxing combined with personalised Ayurveda diets.

For those seeking to explore, take bicycle rides around local villages for a glimpse into rural lifestyles in this beautiful corner of India, discover the Jewish and colonial history of the region on historical excursions, explore sacred temples or visit the nearby Kumarakom bird sanctuary. There are also daily yoga sessions, the peaceful Marari beach and the Carnoustie’s own wonderful houseboat for private lunch and evening cruises along the backwaters.

Making the most of the surrounding water and its bounty, the Chimaera restaurant serves up the freshest seafood while Ida has something for everyone. Being a resort dedicated to body and mind, there’s no alcohol available.

luxury tour in india

Sat on a beautiful farm island on land reclaimed from the backwaters of Lake Vambanad, is Philipkutty’s Farm. A family home where the emphasis is on welcoming people into the fold, a stay here is to experience Keralan hospitality at its finest.

Each of the six spacious villas are named after local plants, trees and birds and look out over the peaceful backwaters. Decor is simple but homely with tiled floors, wooden ceilings and antique furniture. Windows and doors flood the villas with natural light and a verandah is the perfect spot from which to sit back and watch life on the river.

A thatched pavilion on stilts overlooks the farm and is where communal meals are served. As a working farm, there is plenty of local produce and delicious meals are made using coconuts, vegetables, fruit and spices grown in the garden and freshly caught fish. Take a walk through the plantations, making friends with the hens, duck and geese that call the farm home.

The family residence is set apart from the villas to ensure total privacy, but they are always happy to chat to guests. The lush, green surroundings provide the perfect haven in which to simply relax and unwind but there are also cooking classes, sunset cruises and outdoor activities for those who wish to explore the beautiful Keralan backwaters.

luxury tour in india

Surrounded by paddy fields and mangroves and nestled on the banks of Lake Vembanad, Kumarakom Lake Resort is a collection of villas that seamlessly blend traditional charm with modern luxury.

Each of the villas have been reconstructed the traditional homesteads of Keralan villages, many of them lovingly reassembled from the original materials. High ceilings, tiled floors and huge windows keep the villas cool and flood them with natural light while open-air bathrooms . Some come with private plunge pools and Jacuzzis while others sit along a meandering 250m pool that weaves its way through the resort.

The eight-sided Ettukettu restaurant was originally commissioned by King Marthanda Varma as a gift to his favourite martial arts tutor, and has been dismantled and restored piece by piece in its new location at the hotel. Being in the heart of Kerala’s backwaters means fresh fish is in abundance at the seafood bar, which is one of the best places to watch the sunset. There is also a traditional tea shop set among the verdant gardens.

An infinity pool looks out over the shimmering lake and there is an Ayurvedic spa for when you want to relax and unwind. For those who want to explore, there are guided walks and bikes to hire as well as boat cruises and fishing trips.

A delicious cooking class at Philipkutty's Farm

Philipkutty’s Farm is a working farm that exists on reclaimed land from Lake Vembanad, below the level of the backwaters. Explore the farm, learning about the organic and sustainable methods used to grow coconut, spices and bananas, and fish for giant prawns and scampi in the canals. You’ll learn how to cook typical Kerala dishes which are well known for their fresh, bold flavours.

luxury tour in india

Peaceful houseboat cruising through the backwaters

Kerala is affectionately known as God’s Own Country, and as you glide along the network of lakes, rivers and canals that make up the backwaters, it’s easy to see why. A houseboat is a great way to explore rural Indian life while enjoying the shade of the verdant green surroundings. You’ll transfer to a smaller canoe to explore the very narrow canals.

Two nights in Fort Cochin

Nestled on the north west tip of Cochin’s peninsula, Fort Cochin is a quaint coastal region with strong links to its colonial history. Having been under the rule of the Portuguese, Dutch and British, the town has a distinctly European feel, its narrow streets lined with cottages and bungalows.

During your time in the city you will explore Cochin’s Heritage Zone where colonial relics are scattered; the remains of Fort Immanuel and St. Francis church, both built by the Portuguese. You will also visit the Dutch Palace, Dutch cemetery, the synagogue in Mattancherry and the narrow streets lined with Dutch and British buildings, past antique shops and spice bazaars, before ending at the Chinese fishing nets to watch the sun set.

Fort Cochin

luxury tour in india

Over a century ago, Geo Brunton and Sons was one of the most respected shipbuilding companies in Cochin. Sat on the harbour and a proud reminder of this prestigious past, is Bruntons Boatyard, a beautiful boutique hotel full of character.

The hotel has been lovingly restored using the same brick, lime and terracotta building materials to ensure it keeps its Victorian charm. On arrival you will immediately be transported back to colonial India thanks to the arched wooden ceilings, tiled floors and traditional punkah fans gently whirring overhead. The walls are adorned with photos and prints of the old boatyard and Dutch maritime maps.

All of the hotel’s 22 rooms look out over the sea where every kind of vessel from small fishing boats to trade boats and cruise ships trace their way across the water. Keep you eyes peeled for the pods of dolphins that weave their way in and out of the waterway. Four poster beds and antique wooden furniture give the rooms plenty of character and some come with balconies from which you can sit and watch the world go by.

Fort Cochin is a melting pot of cultures and this is reflected in its cuisine, every dish on the menu representing one of the many communities that have called this beautiful town home. A rich mix of Indian, Portuguese, British, Dutch, Arabian and Jewish cuisine makes dining here a real treat and with the Chinese fishing nets just around the corner, seafood is a specialty. For afternoon refreshment enjoy a cup of tea in the tea lounge and come evening the Armoury Bar is the perfect place to sip on a expertly mixed cocktail or beer and enjoy a game of billiards.

The hotel’s garden is a calm, green refuge and the outdoor pool provides a refreshing break from the Kerelan sun. There is also an Ayurvedic massage centre for those moments when you simply want to drift away.

In the heart of beautiful Fort Cochin is the Old Harbour Hotel, whose Dutch and Portuguese influences are in keeping with the colonial charm of the town. The 300-year-old building, once the residence for employees of an English tea broking firm, has been lovingly restored with special care taken to preserve its original features.

With just 13 rooms, the hotel has a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Its decor is simple yet elegant with a mix of antique furniture and pieces of art from the owner’s own collection. Rooms are named after the old streets of Fort Cochin and feature high ceilings, wooden or tiled floors and windows that look out over the courtyard or the iconic Chinese fishing nets. There are also garden cottages with open-air showers, a verandah and private pond.

The lush green garden is an oasis of calm; relax while listening to the breeze rush through the trees and the tinkle of the fountain, or cool off in the refreshing water of the swimming pool. With a large open-air terrace, Ayurvedic spa and daily yoga sessions it’s hard not to feel completely serene during your stay here.

The hotel’s proximity to the famed Chinese fishing nets means seafood here is always plentiful and fresh. Every evening there is a barbecue on which to cook the catch of the day as well as a menu of Indian classics made using organically grown vegetables.

The dabbawalas in action

When it comes to lunch, popping out for a sandwich is just not how they do it in Mumbai. The dabbawalas are a 5,000 strong group who deliver 200,000 lunch boxes every day to offices around the city. Every morning the dabbawalas call on homes to pick up dabbas, or lunch boxes, filled with home cooked food prepared for office workers. All the boxes look identical but a very well organised and precise system ensures they all end up at the correct desk. You’ll visit Churchgate Station to see this amazing process in action.

Sunset and sunrise in Varanasi

An ancient settlement on the banks of the Ganges, Varanasi is India’s spiritual capital and important among numerous faiths. Varanasi’s 84 ghats – stone embankments that step down into the river- are its most significant landmarks. Most are crowded with pilgrims performing ritual ablutions in the waters while a few are used solely for cremation. Sublime and sometimes shocking to visitors, the whole experience is utterly unforgettable.

The rest of the city is home to some 23,000 temples, the sandstone Ramnagar Fort and numerous centres of education, philosophy, music and art. Small-scale industries and household production employ most of Varanasi’s residents and its winding alleyways are one of the best places to find fine silks, carpets and crafts.

Where to stay

luxury tour in india

Set among beautiful gardens, mango orchards and marigold and jasmine fields is Nadesar Palace, a 19th-century colonial palace and once a guest house for the officials of the East India Company. With just ten rooms, the hotel is grand yet intimate and is a real oasis of calm.

The hotel is dedicated to and named after the Goddess Nadesari, and there is a shrine to the deity in front of the building. Inside, the walls are adorned with works of art from the Maharaja’s personal collection while the rooms are filled with antique furniture and decorated in the same hues as the flowers that are offered to the holy Ganges.

A lap pool is set within perfectly manicured gardens and for those looking for ultimate relaxation, the spa offers a range of treatments inspired by India’s ancient healing techniques. Once you’ve built your energy reserves back up, take to the mini four-hole golf course.

One of the joys of travelling to India is sampling the food. The restaurant, which harks back to the bygone era of the Raj, serves traditional Indian cuisine alongside more international dishes. Private dining experiences are available to make your stay extra special, including a poolside Indian barbecue that is cooked in front of you while you enjoy the mesmerising music of sitar and tabla players.

Set on the banks of the holy River Ganges on one of Varanasi’s 87 ghats is Brijrama Palace, an opulent hotel that is perfect for those that want to be close to the heart and soul of this deeply spiritual city.

Built in the 18th century by the Royal House of Nagpur, the palace has been lovingly restored. Murals, hand-painted ceilings and beautiful carvings revealed during the restoration have brought it back to life, ensuring the building is in keeping with this most atmospheric of cities.

Barnasi silk and gold leaf is used throughout the hotel and rooms are furnished with wooden four poster beds and beautiful Indian fabrics.

Two nights in the capital

With a population of over 18 million, Delhi is an international metropolis. Perhaps daunting at first sight, a little exploring soon reveals a rich, diverse and fascinating culture. Throughout most of its history, it has served as the capital of various kingdoms and empires, captured and rebuilt time and time again. Every dynasty left its mark and as you start to explore, you’ll discover reminders and relics from this colossal game of pass the parcel.

As well as centuries worth of history to explore, Delhi is also one of the best places in India to shop, try the many different styles of food and experience the buzz of a city where its millions of inhabitants are going about their daily business. And if weaving your way in and out of the rickshaws and cyclists ever starts to get too much, turn the corner and you’ll find a tranquil garden or a quiet enclave in which to stop, gather your thoughts and recharge.

With its clean lines, crisp decor and modern take on Moghul architecture, The Lodhi is a cool and contemporary hotel in the heart of New Delhi.

Despite being set within seven acres of grounds, the hotel has just 40 rooms giving it an intimate and exlusive feel. Rooms are elegantly styled in shades of dusky blue, grey and green and come with private balconies and plunge pools. Huge glass windows offer views out across Humayun’s Tomb and the Lodhi Gardens, from which the hotel takes its name.

Sophisticated design touches prevail thoughout, from the light installations and sculptures to the gallery space in the foyer showcasing the work of contemporary Indian artists. The hotel’s restaurant, On the Waterfront, has a real buzz about it, with the ground floor overlooking a reflection pool and a glass pavillion for private parties. The Elan focuses on India’s diverse culinary traditions, and here you can same local delicacies from the north to the south.

The library and cigar lounge are peaceful retreats in which to escape with a good book, while for those wanting to stretch their legs there is a 50m lap pool, three tennis courts, squash courts and a gym. Delhi Golf Club is also located opposite the hotel. After a day of sightseeing and exploring the city, relax in the tranquil spa which offers a range of traditional Indian treatments and therapies.

A driveway lined with tall palm trees leads to the grand white facade of The Imperial, one of Delhi’s most iconic hotels. Harking back to the days of the Raj, The Imperial is filled with old-world charm, its fascinating history a permanent presence.

The opulence of colonial India is felt from the moment you enter; the high ceilings, crystal chandeliers and artwork from the 18th and 19th centuries giving a sense of grandeur. Rooms are beautifully styled with antique furniture, marble floors covered in Indian rugs, and photographs of iconic Indian landmarks and events on the walls.

When the hotel opened its doors in the 30s, it became a meeting point for figures including Nehru, Ghandi, Jinnah and Lord Mountbatton who came to discuss the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan. Photographs of the various battalions during the British Raj adorn the walls and the 1911 Restaurant is a celebration of the year Delhi became the new capital of India.

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to eating and drinking, with four restaurants offering south east Asian, gourmet Indian and European cuisine. There is also a pastry shop and a tea lounge with a glass domed ceiling and tinkling fountain and the hotel’s two bars are some of the city’s most popular.

An outdoor swimming pool is set within the verdant gardens of the hotel and there is a spa offering Ayurvedic therapies for when you want to simply drift away. A tour of Old Delhi

The old city is a labyrinthine maze of lanes overhung by a tangled mass of electric wires. Within this chaos lies a semblance of order – each lane in this area is dedicated to a particular item, rather like a department store. There are lanes selling bangles, grocers, items used in weddings, silverware, clothes, spices and shoes. Sharing the same space are vendors with carts, street side dentists, natural healers and cobblers. Explore in cycle rickshaws and on foot, walking the alleys.

Explore New Delhi

New Delhi was built as the seat of the British Indian government in the early 20th century. The architect, Edwins Lutyens, invented his own order of classical architecture creating grand buildings, such as Rashtrapati Bhavan (formerly known as Viceroy’s House), as well as the Lutyens Bungalow Zone, a green area of residential buildings with the most expensive real estate in India. You’ll also see Humayun’s Tomb, built in 1570 as the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent.

A night spent in Agra

It has graced the pages of books for centuries but nothing quite prepares you for seeing the Taj Mahal for the very first time. The ultimate symbol of eternal love, this is one of India’s most memorable and emotive sights. The Taj Mahal sits on the banks of the holy Yamuna River within 42 acres of beautiful gardens. The domed mausoleum sits above the river bank, surrounded by minarets on all four sides. It is flanked by a mosque and a guest house, both made from red sandstone and mirror images of each other. Rise early, meet your guide and visit during cool, calm hours of sunrise when the monument is bathed in the ethereal glow of the morning light.

There is no denying that the Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is one of the main reasons people visit Agra. However, it’s well worth lingering to explore the city’s magnificent fort that lies just to the west.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The best time to visit India is between October and March, when the weather is more likely to be warm, sunny, and dry. During this time, the north (which is the part of India that most travelers visit) offers clear blue skies, although December and January can be very cold and sometimes foggy. Increasing temperatures in April and May can result in excellent value trips, but you can expect high humidity and thunderstorms.

  • Winter in India sets in around mid-December and lasts through the end of March. This is the coldest and driest season in the country, and considered the best period to visit India. Temperatures during the day are pleasant and comfortable, although often quite chilly at night in the north. Freezing temperatures can be experienced in India’s far north around the Himalaya region, although the mountain views are at their best because of crispy clear skies. In the south, it never gets cold.
  • Summer , also called the pre-monsoon season, starts in April and goes on through mid-June. This is the hottest season in India, especially during the last weeks of the season. Many places experience daily temperatures exceeding 40° C (105° F). It stays cooler in the southern parts of the country, with temperatures reaching around 35° C (95° F), although it’s a lot more humid. In late May, signs of the approaching monsoon start appearing, with squally winds, high humidity, occasional thunderstorms, and dust storms.
  • The monsoon rainy season lasts from mid-June to mid-October. The rains come in from the sea and start making their way up India’s west coast in early June. By mid-July, most of the country is covered in rain. India during the monsoon doesn’t receive rain all the time, although it usually rains for a heavy period every day, followed by pleasant sunshine. The weather gradually starts clearing again from most places in northwest India by October. Travel in India during the monsoon can be a real challenge and is best avoided.
  • The post monsoon season – also referred to as the autumn season – is from mid-October to mid-December. This season comes with a lot of cloudlessness particularly for the northwest side. During this period, the temperature rises again and the weather can be a little unbearable due to the humidity in the air.

HOW TO GET THERE

India receives numerous international daily flights via its many international airports. Most travelers will enter India at one of its two biggest gateways for international visitors, New Delhi and Mumbai, though Kolkata, Bengaluru, and Chennai receive their fair share of international arrivals as well.

  • Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is the country’s largest airport and the main getaway to New Delhi and India. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to New Delhi.
  • Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) serves Mumbai, the financial and entertainment center of India. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Mumbai.
  • Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) is located Bangalore, the third most populous city in India. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Bangalore.
  • Chennai International Airport  (MAA) is located on India’s southeast coast, near the metropolitan area of Chennai. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Chennai.
  • Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport (CCU) serves the Kolkata metropolitan area and is the main getaway to northeast India. Click here for a list of airlines that offer direct flights to Kolkota.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Requirements for entry into India differ from country to country, and are subject to change. Prior to departure, always check with your government and your nearest Indian embassy or consulate what documents you need for travel to Indian.

  • You need a  passport with at least six months validity to enter India.
  • Generally, a  visa is required to enter, exit or transit through India. India issues various types of visas, including e-visas. Make sure you get the right visa for your travel and that it’s valid for the purpose and duration of your stay. If you enter India on the wrong visa, you could be detained on arrival and you may be deported and blacklisted, meaning that you can’t enter India again. You can find out more about this on  India’s e-visa website . Beware of fake websites offering this service.

Make sure you read my  10 tips to plan a worry-free trip .

GETTING AROUND

It’s quite easy to get around in India, and several modes of transportation are available:

  • Air India (the country’s flagship carrier, member of Star Alliance)
  • Hiring a car and driver sounds fancy, but it’s a popular and affordable option in India, especially since driving yourself is strongly discouraged due to lack of respect for traffic laws, frequent accidents (India’s roads are statistically the most dangerous in the world) and absolute chaos on the roads by Western standards. Private transfers with a chauffeur-driven car can be arranged via most hotels at often reasonable prices.
  • The most popular class of travel for most visitors is Sleeper Class (open-plan carriages with three-tier bunks and no air conditioning), which gives a reasonable amount of comfort and a whole lot of atmosphere for a pittance.
  • Those seeking more comfort and cooler carriages should opt for one of the three air-conditioned classes: Air-Conditioned 3-Tier (3AC; three-tier berths in groups of six), Air-Conditioned 2-Tier (2AC; two-tier berths in groups of four with curtains for privacy) or Air-Conditioned 1-Tier (1AC; two- or four-berth compartments with locking doors and meals).
  • On Shatabdi Express trains, AC Executive Chair Class is always a quick, comfortable and cool way to go.
  • Unreserved Second Class (wooden or plastic benches and a cavalcade of people) should be avoided.
  • Unless you are on a serious budget and traveling in India for months, I recommend you avoid all forms of bus travel . Major routes often have comfortable, air-conditioned buses, often referred to as Volvo AC, which are on par in comfort and safety with their international counterparts. However, most of the time, Indian buses are ragged and recycled U.S. school buses from decades prior, where people and luggage are piled in with little regard for comfort or safety.

Why is only Central & North India mentioned but the heading says “Indian Travel Guide”? The South has loads of places to offer too.

In India the beaches of Andaman and Nicobar islands are one of the best beaches in Asia.

Thanks for sharing this information

You forget South India. The most beautiful Place and tasty Food

The Taj Mahal is an ok place. Heavily overrated. It is nothing but a grave of a tyranic ruler’s wife. There are scores of ancient temples whose architecture is a marvel which even today can’t be replicated. The Kailasa Temple in Ellora Caves is one such example. There is Hampi and Leepakshi Temple. Just do a search for ancient temples in India and you will be bewilidered. The Statue of Unity in Gujarat is another new place to see

The list of Indian tourist places can’t be completed without enlisting Kerala, Odisha and North Eastern, right?

In my opinion the best reason to come to india is for a safari. You mentioned ranthambore but the other areas you should consider are

1. Bandhavgarh 2. Kabini 3. Jim Corbett 4. Ranthambore ( again )

Also if you are planning to visit in october you should also consider kanha and pench

I found this very helpful thank you so much! but if you want a cheap deals i got a recommendation

Check this out!! cheap deals tickets

Interesting travel guide for a trip to India. But the guide is incomplete as it doesn’t cover the must- visit places of India. Maybe, you can publish one more blog on India travel guide given the diverse locations and culture to experience in this culturally and historically rich country.

Ananda in the Himalayas

Not long ago, on a hike to the Kunjapuri Temple in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas, retreat participants came upon a view of Rishikesh. Their guide asked what the city is famous for. “The Beatles,” I offered, knowing that Rishikesh is where the musicians went to meditate with the Maharishi in the 1960s.

This was not wrong, but the guide was looking for more relevant answer: Rishikesh is said to be the birthplace of yoga, where Patanjali wrote his Sutras more than 2,000 years ago.

Now it’s the landmark city for another kind of spiritual seekers—maybe not rock stars but often high-profile, and certainly successful—who travel in search of life change. Their destination is Ananda in the Himalayas, a luxury wellness resort that regularly scoops up awards.

The yoga pavilion

Like other retreats along the Ganges River, Ananda takes yoga, Ayurvedic medicine and Vedanta (Hindu philosophy) as its main pillars. Unlike those other places, it does so in a natural setting that’s transcendent, with luxurious facilities to match. The crown jewel of the 100-acre estate is the palace built for Maharaja Narenda Shah in 1895.

Now the palace is where guests are welcomed to the estate—with marigold garlands and ceremonial blessings—and it sets the tone for the experience to follow. This mostly unfolds in a cluster of buildings below the palace, which were built around the year 2000.

They include a restaurant with a grand dining room indoors and a lovely shaded terrace, a 25,000-square-foot spa with 24 treatment rooms and a state-of-the-art gym, and a building with most of the 70 guest rooms. (The exception is one historic charmer in the old palace.) Although these are ready for their planned refresh, they have a grandeur of space and comfort, plus private balconies with views of the palace or the valleys below. That glorious nature, which is almost always in sight, remains central to the experience.

The Viceregal Suite

“It’s more than two decades since we first started out, with only a Palace at the edge of time, surrounded by acres of wild lantana and natural beauty. Back then, all I had was a dream—[a] picture of what I wanted to achieve and where I wanted to be,” says a statement from Ananda founder and managing director Ashok Khanna.

“As the world changed, so did we; but deep within us we have always upheld those beliefs and principles,” it continues. “That was the philosophy [that] brought Ananda in the Himalayas into being. My idea was to bring together the ancient remedies, practices and the deep-rooted wisdom of Indian culture and blend them all with the best of international practices…. This location served as an inspiration to bring alive the wellness destination that I had in mind.”

While the focus remains on yoga and Ayurveda—both of which they consider sciences—it has become more laser-like. Every guest has a long-distance consultation to determine a program when they book, and another, in-person session with an Ayurvedic doctor on arrival. Among other goals, this identifies a guest’s dosha—body type, in Ayurveda, which informs everything from foods served to oils used in spa treatments—and fine-tunes their schedule.

An Ayurvedic treatment

The approach now is “clinical wellness.” says Ankur Verma, the director of wellness operations and training, who emphasizes that the whole staff goes through a lot of the latter. “We have objective ways to measure things.”

From a guest’s perspective, Ananda was a mainstream destination spa along the lines of, say, a Six Senses with its modern creature comforts. In the past decade, it’s grown into a full-on wellness retreat, one that sometimes requires certain sacrifices.

I first visited about 12 years ago when it was at the start of this transition. The general manager at the time pointed out the lower-alcohol wines on the menu (8% or 9%—still potent), meals were abundant, and desserts turned up in bedrooms at turndown.

Meditation at Ananda

Now guests who sign up for wellness programs—as most do—are advised to wean themselves off their vices in advance. There’s no sugar, alcohol or caffeine, and the food is almost fully vegetarian. This isn’t only to optimize results during a guest’s stay but to show that healthful eating can be enjoyable.

“Time spent at Ananda should be an investment in changing your lifestyle,” says general manager Aniket Sarkar. He emphasizes that in their vision, “hospitality is enriching the life of a person who is in need,” and adds that almost everyone who comes knows that something can be improved. “Every treatment and every meal is a step in that direction This is a curated environment to break old habits before you create new ones. We want our guests to feel that well-being is sustainable.”

Guests who come for rigorous detox, panchakarma (a comprehensive Ayurvedic rejuvenation) and weight loss programs are put on liquid or highly restricted diets, but generally, the food is light without being overly spartan. There’s plenty of variety, from around India and beyond, with a satisfying spice quotient. I never felt full, but I also never felt hungry.

Oven-baked tofu wraps with sprouts and pickled ginger

Everyone is encouraged to take a group or private cooking class, which includes some Ayurvedic principles—what to choose for each dosha, the wonders of ghee—as well as some general clean-eating wisdom like choosing actual vegetables over highly processed faux meat, and tips for making food taste good.

Chef Diwaker Balodi, the director of cuisine, came up through India’s lavish Oberoi resorts, where he cooked with meat and salt and other obvious tools to make food taste good. But it wasn’t hard to go from that to this, he says. “It’s the same cooking techniques. We just have to apply the new knowledge we have here.”

In any case, meals are welcome punctuation in days that combine slowness and rigor, expert guidance and self-discovery. There’s yoga first thing in the morning, and meditation and philosophy talks at the end of the afternoon. Guests are given notebooks full of journaling prompts, and their schedules are woven around private consultations in everything from physiotherapy to emotional healing—learning to love, trust and believe in oneself.

The dining room

The specifics vary greatly, as there are more than 15 wellness programs, ranging from the expected cornerstones of stress management and detox to offerings to address timely concerns like poor sleep, infertility, menopause and what is delicately called male hormonal balance, all of which, they say, have become crises because “we got separated from our natural way of living.” (A diabetes program is also in the R&D phase, with case studies already showing that holistic management can get people off insulin.)

All of this takes time, of course, and the de facto minimum stay is a full week. Many programs require 14 or 21 days or more. Often guests work remotely during longer stays, and Sarkar says they report that the Ananda framework boosts their productivity. They accomplish a day’s work in a few hours.

Of course, it helps that roughly 300 people are supporting them, not only giving consultations and administering treatments but also simply cooking and cleaning and even laundering the flowy white pajamas that everyone wears during their stay. “We hand-hold you here to help you prepare to create a lifestyle that prioritizes health,” says Malati Mehrish, the head of yoga and meditation. And while there’s always an individual approach, “we’re collecting data on everyone and trying to document our results.”

She continues, “The changes we’ve made in recent years are creating a beautiful blend that’s the right thing for these times. It’s the best of therapies that people want and need. We’re creating a counternarrative: that there’s a place for ancient wisdom in modern life.” Even more so in the 2020s.
