MICE tourism is a part of the business tourism industry. It encompasses four niche areas, which are:

As you can see, MICE is actually an acronym used to group together the four tourism types mentioned above- contrary to popular belief, it has nothing to do with rodents!

MICE tourism is typically tourism provision that is planned in advance and designed for large groups of people for particular purposes. Leong (2007) defines MICE as ‘a type of tourism where groups of participants are gathered to achieve certain purposes.

Below, I have provided an explanation of each component of MICE:

Mice tourism includes any types of travel for the purpose of a meeting(s). This ranges from small meeting to large meetings. Meetings can be short in duration (e.g. last a couple of hours) or long (e.g. a week or more). Types of meetings include (but are not limited to):

  • Board meetings

  • Strategy planning
  • Shareholder meetings
  • Management meetings

Traditionally, meetings have been predominantly face-to-face, however recent years have seen a big shift towards virtual meetings, which was accelerated by the COVID pandemic and subsequent and rapid move to digital means around the world. This will likely result in the continued decrease of travel for the purpose of meetings in the coming years.

MICE tourism

Incentive travel refers to travel that intends to motivate or reward company stakeholders. There are different types of incentive travel, including:

  • Familiarisation trips
  • Teambuilding trips

MICE tourism has grown considerably in recent years. This growth has been particularly prominent in Asia, where tourism in countries such as China and India have increased significantly.

There have been more conferences organised and more exhibitions in recent years than ever before. This is in part due to a growing population worldwide. It is also because our world has become more interconnected and globalised , thus requiring more meetings, conferences and other events that require international travel.

MICE tourism can be beneficial to a destination’s economy. It also provides a wealth of opportunities for individual companies or organisations who want to put themselves on the international stage.

  • It facilitates the access to new technology
  • It attracts high-spending visitors
  • It provides high yield and return per capita
  • It enhances the international economic contact
  • It creates more economic multiplier effect and competitiveness
  • It can enhance off-peak tourism

MICE tourists often stay longer and spend more money than other tourists, making them important tourism stakeholders. MICE tourism can also help to contribute to community building, urban renewal, and growth of the national identity (Getz, 2008). Furthermore, MICE tourism can encourage development in a destination, particularly in the areas of convention and exhibition centers, improvements of airports and other transport infrastructure and various urban renewal schemes.

MICE tourism is a multifaceted industry, involving a number of tourism stakeholders . This includes:

  •  Accommodation providers
  • Those who provide pre- and post-conference tour opportunities
  •  Staff at specific venues – purpose built centres and hotels
  •  Professional conference and exhibition organisers and catering services
  •  Social program leaders for delegates and participants
  •  Specialised technical support such as audiovisual services

The variety of stakeholders involved in MICE tourism indicates the potentially wide ranging economic impacts of MICE tourism. It also provides rationale for support from government agencies in many countries. It also indicates the scope of the challenges which must be met in coordinating the activities of different stakeholders to ensure that the MICE tourism industry is sustainable and effectively managed.

The MICE industry size was valued at $805 billion in 2017 and was expected to grow at a CAGR of 7.6% to reach $1,439.3 billion by 2025. However, COVID has had a drastic impact on this and this growth is expected to slow or even decline as a result.

MICE tourism is here to stay, but much of it has/will continue to move online, meaning that the monetary value is significantly reduced.

The continuing MICE tourism industry growth (whether physically or online) shall have a positive impact in the growth of businesses, cities and destinations around the world.

What is MICE tourism or MICE travel?

The acronym MICE stands for meetings, incentives, conferencing & exhibitions. It is a niche area of tourism that is focused around the planning and booking of groups for large events, conferences or seminars.

It is an acronym that can easily cause confusion outside our industry and it’s easy to understand why. A quick google search for MICE without the word “tourism” or “travel” following it will unsurprisingly throw up articles on the small rodent that we’re all familiar with.

Some people prefer to use the terms “meetings industry” or “events industry” instead of MICE and it’s believed that this is beginning to trend. It’s not something that we have noticed so much. Regardless of what you call it, it’s an extremely demanding and specialised area of the industry.

Planning for a MICE event can begin years in advance. Sometimes the most prestigious locations are required with the most incredible catering and accommodation requests, not forgetting top-class entertainment or activities for the attendees.

Safely back after a most memorable trip. We were extremely well looked after from arrival in Moscow until departure in Beijing, 21 days later. Food and accommodation very good, as was the wine, which even accompanied us when eating in restaurants off the train! All border crossings went very smoothly, so visas all in order.All in all a super trip, which had no bad or boring moments. Now to go through hundreds of photographs and 2 hours of movie film!

SLCB inspires hoteliers in southern region to promote MICE Tourism

The Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB), an entity under the Ministry of Tourism and Lands, successfully concluded the Southern Hoteliers Training Program on MICE Tourism on 8 May at the Occidental Eden Beruwala. 

This is one of the series of training programs that had been organised by SLCB in many parts of the country during the past few years. This particular MICE Tourism training program was organised in order to create awareness on MICE Tourism among the southern hoteliers and for them to geared up for the upcoming Southern MICE EXPO 2024 to be held on from 27-31 May. Expo will be attended by more than 100 hosted buyers across the globe and also 15 international media. 

This program was attended by nearly 50 participants from 20 hotels in the southern coastal belt.

This one day event commenced with the opening remarks delivered by Sri Lanka Convention Bureau General Manager Krishantha Fernando and consisted of eminent speakers from the MICE industry who are working as DMCs, hoteliers and also a speaker from the Tourist Police. The first session on “Presentation skills in pitching for events to your hotel” was done by Shyana Jayalath who is a marketer and a communicator, which was followed by an informative session by Tourist Police Director Pradeep Ratnayake on “What support the Sri Lanka Police could offer when organising events”.

“How to increase your revenue with MICE/Business Events” was done by Aitken Spence Travels Ltd. Conventions & Exhibitions Division General Manager Ziyan Ameen. Taj Bentota General Manager Sibi Mathew did an experience sharing session on handling successful business events. The final speaker for the day was Compere Digital Marketing Consultant, Founder/CEO and ARS Healthcare Head of Sales and Marketing Gihan Samarawickrama, who spoke on “Connecting Digital Marketing for successful MICE/ Business events”.   

This event also consisted of a practical working group session on “Identifying an Event to position the Southern Region as a MICE hub”. Participants came out with many interesting and creative MICE experiences that the south of Sri Lanka can offer to the MICE Traveller.

All participants were awarded with a certificate of participation issued by the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau. The event wrapped up with closing remarks from Sri Lanka Convention Bureau Manager Research Development and Training Kumudu Hennedige.

[Macao-Hengqin Industries Synergy] Supporting the MICE Industries with Central Government’s Preferential Measures for Macao Including the “Tourist Group Multi-entry Measure”

The first ordinary plenary meeting of the Committee for the Development of Conventions and Exhibitions in 2024 was held on 20 May. The meeting was presided by Lei Wai Nong, Chairman of the Committee for the Development of Conventions and Exhibitions and Secretary for Economy and Finance.

Attendees exchanged views on the latest developments and trends of the MICE industry.

“Multi-venue Event” Collaboration Model Ushers in New Development Opportunities

According to Secretary Lei Wai Nong, the boundaries management implemented in Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Co-operation Zone in Hengqin from March, the “Measures for the Management of Multifunctional Free Trade Accounts in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Co-operation Zone in Hengqin” implemented in May, and a series of entry-exit facilitation measures such as the multiple Macao-Hengqin entry-exit for tourist groups, have brought about new opportunities for the development of industries in Macao and Hengqin, especially the new patterns such as “Multi-venue Event”.

He added that Macao is having close communication with the Co-operation Zone’s economic and trade departments to carry out different preparations. He said the relevant departments had been instructed to visit the mainland and contact departments of local governments which had hosted events in Macao or have potential to host MICE activities in Macao, in order to publicise the above facilitation measures and services.

Some attendees reported having received enquiries on the “tourist group multi-entry” travel facilitation measure. Some of them reported that trade visitors of Macao’s MICE events are trying out a new option of accommodation – staying in Hengqin accommodation when participating in Macao’s events, as a way to decrease the cost of joining MICE activities in Macao and support the Macao-Hengqin MICE industry’s development.

Many Large MICE Events Are Hosted to Enhance Macao’s International Presence and Influence

Secretary Lei Wai Nong mentioned at that a series of large MICE activities were organised by the Macao SAR government and the industry one after another in 2024. Particularly, the “6 th Ministerial Conference of the Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao)” and the “China and Portuguese-speaking Countries Entrepreneur Conferences” held in April, which were highly valued by nine Portuguese-speaking countries. Government and enterprise delegations from these nine Portuguese-speaking countries were organised to participate in the events, which not only deepened the breadth and depth of the co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, but also effectively enhanced the international presence and influence of Macao. Later this year, a number of important MICE events will be held to help connect resources in key industries through the high-level guests from multiple fields at home and abroad.

According to Secretary Lei Wai Nong, the Committee for the Development of Conventions and Exhibitions has always been an important platform for the government and the industry to strengthen interaction and exchanges. Since this meeting is the last one for this session of the Committee, he would like to thank all the Committee members for their long-term valuable opinions which assisted the government in formulating practical MICE policies in many aspects. Driven by the new productive forces, he is also optimistic about the healthy long-term development of the industry.

Macao Ranks 20 th among Asia Pacific Cities in the Global Conference Cities’ Ranking

According to Secretary-General of the Committee and President of the Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM) Vincent U, the “International Meetings Market 2023 Report” recently published by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) ranked Macao the 20 th among Asia Pacific cities in the global conference cities’ ranking, which is a big leap (34) comparing with the 54 th in 2022, reflecting the recognition of the international organisations for Macao’s software and hardware advantages and the competitiveness of the conference market in the city.

In addition, in line with the objectives of the “1+4” planning, to constantly introduce more international and professional MICE events to Macao, the government, in hands with the industry operators, has kept on promoting Macao as an ideal convention and exhibition destination. In addition, IPIM has also launched the International Professional Conference Subsidy Matching Initiative this year, aiming to further connect the resources and networks of the six major integrated tourism and leisure enterprises, chambers of commerce, associations, and key industry professionals, and to create synergy through the linkage between the upstream, midstream and downstream of the MICE industry chain. Through the extensive promotion of the Initiative and the enhanced MICE event bidding, more professional conferences accredited by international associations like ICCA will be brought to Macao, accelerating the professional development of local conventions.

Some of the committees opined that the gratifying improvement of Macao’s ICCA ranking shows international MICE organisation’s recognition of the Macao SAR Government and the sectors’ endeavour in optimising MICE software and hardware facilities. As the industry grows internationally, Macao has manifested its capabilities by reviving the MICE sector effectively after the pandemic.

Saudia Group and Airbus sign the largest aircraft deal in Saudi Aviation

Saudi Group announced the largest aircraft deal in Saudi aviation history with Airbus during the first day of the Future Aviation Forum 2024 held at the King Abdulaziz International Conference Center in Riyadh under the patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. This landmark agreement encompasses 105 confirmed aircraft and marks a significant moment not only for the Saudi aviation industry but also for the wider MENA region. The ceremony, in the presence of His Excellency the Minister of Transport and Logistics Services and Chairman of Saudi Arabian Airlines Corporation, Engr. Saleh Al-Jasser, was attended by dignitaries, country ambassadors, and key figures from the global aviation sector, as well as a multitude of media representatives and industry experts specializing in travel, aviation, and transportation.

The deal, signed by H.E. Engr. Ibrahim Al Omar, the Director General of Saudia Group, and Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Executive Vice President Sales of the Commercial Aircraft Business, includes A320neo and A321neo models. These aircraft will be distributed between Saudia and flyadeal, the group’s low-cost carrier. Saudia will acquire 54 A321neo aircraft, while flyadeal will receive 12 A320neo and 39 A321neo aircraft.

The new aircraft directly support Saudia Group’s objectives to connect the world with the Kingdom, aligning with several key pillars of Saudi Vision 2030. These include the transportation and logistics objective to increase guests’ capacity to 330 million and expand destinations to 250 by 2030, and the tourism objective to attract 150 million visits by 2030.  This is in addition to the Hajj and Umrah objective to contribute to the increase of Umrah pilgrim capacity to 30 million by 2030.

These modern aircraft boast a spacious cabin with a stylish interior design. They’re equipped with the latest amenities and technology, ensuring a truly differentiated travel experience that prioritizes Saudia guests’ comfort and privacy whilst delivering an exceptional service. Furthermore, the A320 family aircraft are fuel efficient as it emits 20%  less fuel burn and carbon emissions compare to previous generation aircraft.

To ensure the new aircraft are always in top condition, Saudia Technic, the group’s Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) arm, will provide comprehensive maintenance services.  This will prove even more crucial with the upcoming completion of the MRO Village at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, significantly increasing the company’s service capacity.

We are increasing flights and seat capacity across our existing 100+ destinations on four continents, with plans for further expansion. The progress of Saudi Vision 2030 is attracting more visits, tourists, entrepreneurs, and pilgrims each year. This motivated our decision to secure this significant deal, which will create jobs, increase local content, and contribute to the national economy.”

Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Executive Vice President Sales of the Commercial Aircraft business said:“The new additions of the A320neo family aircraft will play a vital role in contributing to Saudi Arabia’ ambitious Vision 2030 plan. It will enable Saudia Group’s strategy to  advance the Kingdom’s aviation capabilities while enabling both airlines to benefit from the A320neo Family’s exceptional efficiency, superior economics, highest level of passenger comfort as well as lower fuel-burn and emissions.”

The ceremony marked a new chapter for Saudia, unveiling their largest investment ever in guest experience. This includes a first-of-its-kind AI-powered “Travel Companion”, to support guests through trip planning to after sales support. Business class cabins will be transformed into luxurious, privacy-focused suites that convert into flat beds, progressively rolling out across both existing and new fleets. Guests can also stay connected with high speed in-flight connectivity and enjoy unparalleled entertainment with the highest-definition screens soon to be on board.

Consultations between Russia and India on a bilateral agreement to ease travel will begin in June, a Russian minister has said, adding that Moscow and New Delhi were set to strengthen their tourism ties by launching visa-free group tourist exchanges.

The minister at the sidelines of the International Economic Forum "Russia - Islamic World: KazanForum 2024" in Kazan said the first discussion on a draft agreement was scheduled to take place in June, and a signing was expected by the end of the year.

"Russia and India are set to strengthen their tourism ties as they gear up for the launch of visa-free group tourist exchanges. The first round of consultations between the two nations is scheduled for June, with an aim to finalise a bilateral agreement by the end of the year," the minister said.

Kondratyev said Russia planned to replicate the success of visa-free tourist exchanges already established with China and Iran.

Russia and China initiated their visa-free group tourist exchange on August 1 last year.

Similarly, a visa-free group tourist exchange between Russia and Iran commenced on the same date, ushering in a new era of tourism cooperation.

India-Russia Visa Free Travel: In what could be a big development for the tourism industry, India and Russia are on the brink of finalising a landmark visa-free travel agreement, anticipated to come into effect by the close of 2024. Talks between the two nations have been underway, with a focus on easing travel restrictions and fostering stronger tourism ties, according to TOI.

Scheduled to commence discussions in June, both parties are keen to facilitate visa-free group tourist exchanges, aiming to bolster cultural and economic relations between Moscow and New Delhi. Nikita Kondratyev, Director of the Russian Economic Development Ministry's Department of Multilateral Economic Cooperation and Special Projects, emphasized India's preparedness for the forthcoming agreement, citing progress in internal state coordination.
