Meet Lori, the expert Playa Del Carmen travel agent

We have had many questions from readers about resorts, hotels and all inclusive hotels in Playa Del Carmen and the Riviera Maya. There are hundreds of hotels and resorts to choose from so it can be overwhelming to look over the internet to choose one. We have teamed up with Lori who is a Playa Del Carmen travel agent (aka travel designer) who knows resorts better than about anyone we know.

We look forward to bringing you much more articles this year on resorts and hotels. We want you to be the best informed so you can have the best vacation possible.

How long have you been working as a travel designer (aka travel agent)?

When I was in university I started working as a travel agent because of my love of travel. So since 2007 I have been working helping people book  vacations.

How many hotels have you been to?

I have literally have been to hundreds of hotels. There are about 100 resorts in the Riviera Maya and I have stayed at or visited most of them. Each week I am checking out new hotels and resorts.

Why is it good for someone use a travel agent?

When you book online you are more of a number then a name. The internet is just an order taker and does not know your preferences. It cannot accurately plan a vacation for you according to your wants and needs. If anything goes wrong you have a person to talk to at any time rather than an 1800 number.

I have connections and personal contacts at many resorts that can help with VIP treatment and special requests.

If a hotel gets overbooked, which happens often, the first people that get rebooked at a different location is people that booked online. This can be unsettling because you had certain expectations of where you were going to stay.

In my case, I have first hand knowledge of the resorts in this area and can answer questions about differences between resorts, connecting rooms, special circumstances.

Is it more expensive to use a travel agent?

A majority of the time the price of using an online website booking service compared to a travel agent, the price is the same.

Usually for North American travelers the prices are the same online and through a travel agent. But of course with a travel agent you are getting the expertise of first hand knowledge of the area. There is a lot of information online and it is very hard to sift through it. I can narrow down options to match your needs.

If there is a lower price online normally I can match the price plus give the full service for booking and answer questions.

What types of perks can you offer as a travel agent?

At certain resorts I can offer spa credits, beach dinners, upgrades, birthday packages and more. At some resorts I can might be able to guarantee connecting rooms. Among some hotels I can get rooms that appear sold out.

At a good number of resorts I am able to offer a few extras but overall the service is about getting people in a resort or hotel that I know they will enjoy and keeping them informed about new options for their upcoming vacations.

What type of things can you book for people?

All inclusive resorts, hotels and airport transfers and excursions in conjunction with hotel bookings. I also do group bookings and destination wedding planning.  If someone would like travel insurance, I am able to offer that as well.

Great interview, Lori! Glad to be on the same team!

We have used Lori before when booking resorts. She is so knowledgeable and really knows her stuff. She knew all the details f the resort and suggested one we had not thought of. Wonderful video! I plan on traveling with my two children, 12 & 10, late May. I was unsure of what all-inclusive hotels to consider. We would be moving out of expensive resort after a destination marriage . Would like to stay two days ( four adults ) . Probably will have only one full day to see tulum or pyramid before taking return flight to Texas. We can share two room suite or get two rooms. Definitely don’t need all inclusive. Thank you

Was wondering about the Reef 28 in playa. Have read some of the review. Do you know anything about this place? There are 6 couples coming. We are all in are mid 50’s. We will be going to the Reef 28 in Feb. 2020. We will be traveling with other couples. I have booked a master suite (all inclusive). We are very light sleepers and don’t stay out very late. We don’t remember the walls being that thin, so that is a good thing. The only thing to ask if your room is under the rooftop. We don’t know if some sound would come down. If booking through AAA gives you the warm fuzzies, go back to 'em, tell them the price you've found online and ask if they can match it.

IME, agents can almost always match and sometimes even beat the best prices I've been able to find online.

While I might be off topic I have never traveled to Mexico and my wife has a medical condition that needs special attention from a dietary needs. Having gone with a TA who specializes in this area and has sent us to a resort she has dealt with for years. If something goes wrong they will hear from me. If we decide to return to Mexico we now know a place where my wife can eat safe and I would book myself.

I think you'd be fine booking directly with the hotel. Ask for all confirmation numbers for transfers & your room & clarify your room selection. Also, be persistent as to who to look for when you exit the airport for your transfer (Ask them what color shirts they are wearing....) & how to obtain the information (time) for the return transfer. Keep all your documentation in a safe place. Be sure & pay with a credit card & ask them what cc they will accept.

I always price first fun jet and normally just book thru them. You can pay a deposit then final payment about 45 days out. I have gotten fun jet price and taken to a travel agent and they matched it. I looked at trip guy for my already booked fun jet trip in May to gran Porto real and the hotel only portion was $700 higher on trip guy for a 5 night stay. I have never found a cheaper way than fun jet and have never had an issue with their customer service if I needed to change something or ask a question.

I would never book thru AAA, they are the one of the most expensive outfit.

They provide good service in many things but travel bookings are very pricey.

The only down fall I have encountered so far, is that if you have any questions

concerning your trip they are very slow in emailing you back. I have tried on a couple occasions to call but my Spanish is very limited and the language barrier can get frustrating. But all in all, so far I am satisfied.

Here are the best ways to experience Riviera Maya like a local:

1. Get Off the Beaten Path

If you want to really experience Riviera Maya like a local, you’re going to need to get off the resort at least once during your trip.

While the all-inclusive resorts in Riviera Maya are wonderful and convenient, they don’t give you a true taste of local life.

Instead, venture out off the beaten path and explore the local neighborhoods, markets, and restaurants in nearby towns.

For a local beach experience, head to Punta Esmeralda or Playa Xpu-Ha , which are popular among locals.

You also can’t miss visiting the nearby cenotes , natural sinkholes that are unique to this region and beloved by locals.

2. Try the Local Street Foods

One of the best ways to experience a new destination is through its food, and the Riviera Maya is no exception.

While you’ll find plenty of delicious options at your resort, be sure to venture out and try some of the local street foods as well.

In Riviera Maya, you’ll find local Yucatan specialities like cochinita pibil, a slow-roasted pork dish, and marquesitas, a crispy crepe filled with cheese and other toppings.

These can be found in downtown Playa del Carmen along 5th Avenue, or near any highly trafficked tourist areas.

3. Participate in Local Festivals and Events

The Riviera Maya is home to a vibrant culture, with many festivals and events happening throughout the year.

From traditional celebrations like Day of the Dead and Carnaval to the Riviera Maya Jazz festival, there’s always something going on in this region.

Take some time to research upcoming events during your trip and make plans to attend one.

A good place to check for upcoming events is the Ayuntamiento de Solidaridad Facebook page .

There’s usually always something going on in the main square outside of Town Hall in Playa del Carmen, with local food stalls and vendors.

4. Use Public Transportation

While taxis and private transportation are readily available in the Riviera Maya, using public transportation is not only a more affordable option but also a great way to experience local life.

The most popular form of transportation for locals in Riviera Maya is known as a “colectivo”, which is a shared van service that runs along the main highway from Cancun to Playa del Carmen and from Playa del Carmen to Tulum.

Taking a colectivo can be intimidating at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s a very cheap and efficient way to travel between towns and explore different areas of the region.

5. Dine at Local Restaurants

While it can be tempting to stick to the restaurants at your resort, dining at local restaurants is a must for experiencing the Riviera Maya like a local.

Not only will you get to try authentic and delicious dishes, but you’ll also support small businesses and interact with locals.

If you want to try out the best tacos in Playa del Carmen , I’d recommend heading to El Ñero, which is a late night spot popular among locals.

For seafood lovers, El Pirata is a local favorite for fresh and affordable seafood dishes. I’d also recommend trying the chilaquiles at La Cueva del Chango.

6. Learn Basic Spanish Phrases

While many locals in the Riviera Maya may speak English, knowing some basic Spanish phrases can go a long way in showing respect and building connections with the local community.

Take some time to learn common greetings, thank yous, and other simple phrases before your trip.

Locals will appreciate the effort and it will make your experience much more enjoyable and meaningful.

Hotels : I always find the best deals for Mexico hotels and resorts on Expedia or Booking.com . If you prefer a vacation rental, check VRBO as they are often cheaper than AirBnB’s added fees!

Flights : I recommend using Skyscanner for the best Mexico flight deals. Be sure to sign up for their price alerts for your preferred travel dates.

Rental Cars : I recommend using Discover Cars because you can compare multiple car rental companies and see detailed ratings for overall value, ease of pick-up, efficiency of agents, car condition, and overall time spent.

Cancun Airport Transportation : I recommend booking a private transfer with Cancun Airport Transportation for the quickest and most hassle-free option!

Tours & Activities: I always use Viator or GetYourGuide for booking tours and activities in Mexico. You can cancel up to 24 hours before the tour for a full refund, plus they have excellent customer service if you were to have any issues.

Travel Insurance: After my Dad broke his hand in a taxi accident in Playa del Carmen, I always recommend buying travel insurance before your trip for added peace of mind! I recommend Travel Insurance Master for short trips or Safety Wing for digital nomads.

Biodegradable Sunscreen : Don’t forget to add biodegradable sunscreen to your Mexico packing list ! Regular sunscreen is prohibited when swimming in the ocean and cenotes in Mexico, so you’ll need to pack some biodegradable sunscreen for sun protection. I recommend Sun Bum Sunscreen , which is reef-friendly, vegan, and cruelty-free.

I just came back with my family from a wonderful vacation!! I'm so glad that we chose this place. The staff is so friendly. The hotel is so nice. The style is very unique. The pools are never crowded, and the staff are so helpful there. Walking a block away, you are in a very picturesque street: The 5th Ave, where you can find everything, and you can be in contact with the real people from Playa del Carmen. This hotel has two restaurants: The Grill and La Cocina. They have great food and great atmosphere. Also, it's located close to most important attractions: Xcaret, the ferry to Cozumel, etc., etc. You will love this place.
