As The Cult return to the stage to launch the next chapter of “Under the Midnight Sun,” Astbury hopes that the album’s new dimensions provoke reactions both primal and sublime in listeners’ consciousness – echoing what he himself experienced during its creation. “At the core of it all, music contains the vibrational frequency of how we once communicated before we could even speak”, Astbury says . “Bird songs, animal calls, string theory, quantum physics, psychedelics… The record ultimately becomes about discovering and celebrating anew the beauty from those strangely natural moments that surround and inspire us”.

The Cult (formed in 1983) is an English post-punk and hard rock band, originally formed as a gothic, metal revivalist band with Native American influences, hailing from Bradford, Yorkshire, UK.

Prior to forming The Cult, vocalist Ian Astbury founded the gothic rock band the Southern Death Cult alongside guitarist David Burrows, bassist Barry Jepson, and drummer Haq Quereshi. In December 1982 the band issued their debut double A-sided single “Moya”/“Fatman” and were attracting audiences of up to 2,000 people by their fifth live gig. Following a slot opening for the band Bauhaus, Astbury disbanded the group after reading too many positive articles about them in music periodicals.

By 1983 Astbury had formed Death Cult with guitarist Billy Duffy, drummer Ray Mondo, and bassist Jamie Stewart and released a self-titled EP that summer. With fears of being associated as a gothic band, in 1984 Death Cult became The Cult, boasting their brand of hard rock with punk/psychedelic influences. The band’s debut full-length “Dreamtime” arrived later in 1984 peaking at No. 21 on the UK Albums Chart. The record was led by the single “Spiritwalker”, earned favourable reviews from the musical press, and introduced Astbury’s interest in Native American issues. Prior to touring in support of the release The Cult recorded five songs at Maida Vale 5 studio for Richard Skinner of BBC Radio.

The Cult’s fourth single “She Sells Sanctuary” was released in May 1985, peaking at No. 15 on the UK Singles Chart. By this point Mark Brzezicki had arrived as the group’s new drummer and the band were putting the final touches on their sophomore album. 1985’s ”Love” arrived in August strongly rooting their music away from punk towards 1960’s psychedelia. The album charted well peaking at No. 4 in the UK, and sold impressively throughout Europe, Australia, and the U.S. In support of the release The Cult embarked on a worldwide tour with new drummer Les Warner, during which time the band released the subsequent album singles “Rain” and “Revolution”.

Despite initial recordings not satisfying the Cults’ members, re-recordings in New York with producer Rick Bubin produced positive albeit much heavier results. The 1987 album “Electric” was led by the No. 18 single “Love Removal Machine”, cementing the Cult’s devoted following in the UK and augmenting one in the U.S. The Cult’s fourth full-length album “Sonic Temple” was recorded with Astbury and new drummer Matt Sorum, and represented the group’s most successful release to date. Earning gold certification in the UK and platinum in the U.S., the album’s Top 10 U.S. single “Fire Woman” led to the band touring with Aerosmith, Soundgarden, and Metallica.

With Mickey Curry added on drums and Charlie Dayton on bass, the Cult released their fifth full-length “Ceremony” in 1991. Despite the sales of its predecessor, the Cult project was splintering behind the scenes, and following the release the band took a three year hiatus. The compilation “Pure Cult” arrived in 1993, as did a new rhythm section featuring former Mission bassist Craig Adams and drummer Scott Garrett. Following a disappointing self-titled album in 1994 the band once again took a hiatus with Astbury forming the Holy Barbarians” in 1995.

Astbury, alongside Matt Sorum, Duffy and Martyn LeNoble appeared as The Cult in June 1999 at the Tibetan Freedom Festival. The group later crafted the album “Beyond Good and Evil” in 2001, “Born into This” in 2004, and “Choice of Weapon” in 2012.

Live reviews

The Cult will probably always be most closely associated with the eighties; back then, they came over like The Cure’s more brazen, no-bullshit cousin, with a take on gothic rock that was always more concerned with image and sound than any real thematic preoccupation. Frontman Ian Astbury, too, gave Robert Smith a run for his money in the make-up stakes, and continues to prove a considerably more energetic presence on stage. Outwith that decade, though, they began to struggle, and have been on-again, off-again ever since 1995, when they initially split. Their first reunion, in 1999, saw them drop a well-received new record, Beyond Good and Evil; ten years later, though, Astbury had taken to being altogether more cautious about their future, declaring that no further new material would stem from the reformation. He’s gone back on that promise, though, with Choice of Weapon released two years ago to a strong commercial showing in the United States and Canada, and another largely agreeable reception from rock critics. Whilst the Bradfordians prep another new LP, due later this year, they’re touring their classic 1987 album Electric in its entirety; expect them to flesh out the set with other classics, too, like ‘She Sells Sanctuary’ and ‘Revolution’, before they go out in support of their next album in 2015.

The Cult is opening on this leg of the G 'n R tour. I was super stoked when I heard that. The show I saw was in the Cowboys' AT&T stadium, which is monstrous with less than stellar accoustics. The place was about half-full when The Cult started their set. You could tell Ian was not thrilled about the folks up front that were texting instead of trying to enjoy the music in front of them. He made several comments along those lines. But the band still sounded great. I would actually say it was easier to understand Ian's vocals with less amps behind him than it was to understand Axl with a wall of power behind him. As more people came in and the beer had been flowing, people were getting into the music. The last two songs She Sells Sactuary and Love Removal Machine had everybody engaged. Billy Duffy seemed to feed off that better energy, too, as he began windmilling ala Pete Townsend. They definitely did not disappoint but I think they are better suited for more intimate venue where they can connect more quickly. I would see them again in a heartbeat.

It seems rather fitting to have described British hard rock outfit The Cult as a cult phenomena following their incarnation in the early 80s. The group has now cemented its place on the circuit and despite infrequent breaks in their recording and touring schedules, as of late they are intent on performing to the devoted fanbase who continue to sell out their tours in force.

No longer described as cult, despite the band name, the venue is packed this evening with fans of the group's long discography. They are not disappointed as the quartet takes to their instruments looking energised and intent as they grapple with a first set made exclusively of the 'Electric' album. The second half is far more about showcasing the very best selections of their discography and features the new classics of 'She Sells Sanctuary' and 'Rain'. These are of course received well by the vocal crowds and simply spurs the group on to throw themselves further into the instrumentals. An encore of 'Horse Nation' and 'Sun King' is a fitting end to a rambunctious, nostalgic evening.

I am sorry to say, as a fan of the group since the 80s and watching them live several times I was very disappointed will the singer's Attitude, he seemed so much up his own Arse and arrogant. Spitting on stage. Someone has to clean up!! There was a lot of drinking and dangerous mooshing going on, several girls left there place at the front as they were fearful for there safety . I stayed at front till 2 songs from the end. I was getting badly hurt being pushed against the barrier. What I thought was a absolute disgrace was the singer told the crowd that in a crowd of Six thousand it's stupid putting yourself in danger( hinting at me) and if they don't like the rock way then they should not go to gigs!!? I pay the same as the drunk spaced out individuals who want to cause bother.why should not I expect to be safe? I'm not a fan of them now because of this attitude. music was great, cello and violin at one point with invited musicians. Such a shame the night was spoilt for me and other weaker folk.

The Cult is the reason for my becoming a dedicated musician in 1985. I finally saw them in 2003, it was a huge moment for me but I can admit being a little underwhelmed by the lack of energy on the stage. Sloppy and a bit boring. Fast forward to last night and the difference still has me singing Wild Flower, their opener. They were fantastic! As soon as they walked on-stage their confidence and sound took command and I realized that THIS was what I had been waiting for. The crowd was great, the setlist impeccable, and the chemistry of the Cult very solid. Even Billy Duffy took the mic at the end to express his appreciation for the audience, so I know that they had a blast, too. It really showed!

johnny-wall-1’s profile image

Right from the off, Astbury was stamping his war dance in a Jim Morrison style as Billy Duffy stood, legs spread as far as possible, firing out a howling solo on his iconic white Gretsch guitar. Rain's towering melody got the crowd jumping as they switched between songs from the new album and old classic’s. Tracks like Fire Woman and Li'l Devil kept up the momentum, with Astbury's voice sounding as primal and defiant as ever. It started off massive and just built from there to an amazing crescendo. Absolutely Brilliant

Saw them once at The Brixton Academy in the UK around Nov 1987. Being an American 15 year old at the time on holiday in the UK at the time, and it being my first real concert, it was an amazing experience. Great memories of them rocking out hard with Billy Duffy crushing the guitar solos. Somehow I remember the opening bands too: crazy pink revolver and Balem and the Angel. Great times. hope to make the wellmont show in NJ. Soundtrack of my youth.

A great show/performance, considering the venue. The River Cree Edmonton, really needs to look and evaluate their room to improve the sound and lessen the '60's/'70's issues of echo feedback, as voiced by Ian Astbury.

With that said, the group delivered a very, memorable rockin', enjoyable performance. I have been a fan from the beginning, well, since 1984 anyway. Still a great fan and deservedly so. ;-)

The entire show was cancelled 50min before the doors were supposed to be open.

The place was locked down and dead upon arrival at 6pm. Not a sole in sight. No

equipment out back..nothing. Total bust.

We were extremely skeptical from the start and it pretty much ended with a

fizzle as we expected.

No love for the NILE and it's related clubs.

Best gig I’ve been to in a while, really slick sound and loads of energy. Ian Astbury’s vocal was incredible had the audience jumping through a succession of crowd-pleasers. I didn’t catch the first act but Yonaka put in a great support-act shift but the Cult were in a different league to many bands I’ve seen this year and I’m looking forward to the next time

THE CULT Announces June/July 2023 European Tour

Supporting the global release of their critically acclaimed album "Under The Midnight Sun" , in 2023 THE CULT will connect with European fans via a major summer tour with a series of headlining shows and major festival appearances kicking off in Brussels, Belgium on June 14. Accompanying the tour announcement is the release of THE CULT 's fiery, expressionistic new video for "Vendetta X" , the third single from "Under The Midnight Sun" . The song's stylized cinematic reimagining was directed by the band's longtime collaborator Juan Azulay (known for his powerful imagery created with ground-breaking artists spanning SIGUR RÓS to Lydia Lunch ). The video is available to watch below.

THE CULT European tour dates:

June 14 - Ancienne Belgique - Brussels, BE June 15 - LKA Longhorn - Stuttgart, DE June 21 - La Riviera - Madrid, ES June 22 - Razzmatazz - Barceona, ES June 23 - BBK Bilbao Music Legends Festival - Bilbao, ES June 25 - Les Docks - Lausanne, Switzerland June 27 - Budapest Park - Budapest, HU June 29 - Arsenal Fest - Kragujevac, RS June 30 - SRC Salaata - Zagreb, HR July 01 - Pordenone Blues Festival - Pordenone, IT July 04 - Cardiff Castle - Cardiff, UK July 05 - Halifax Piece Hall - Halifax, UK July 06 - Scarborough Open Air Theatre - Scarborough, UK

In a recent interview with Germany's Rock Antenne , THE CULT frontman Ian Astbury was full of praise for "Under The Midnight Sun" , calling it "essential." He clarified: "If you're a fan of rock music, our new record's essential… I don't think there's any recent releases of rock music that come close to 'Under The Midnight Sun' . And to say that, it may sound like an arrogant statement, but I'm tired of this bullshit. Stop it. Stop phoning it in. Stop exploiting your fans. Stop patronizing your fans. And stop calling them fans. They're your benefactors. Our audience are our benefactors."

Astbury continued: "I have such incredible gratitude and respect to people who would actually pay their hard-earned money to walk through a door, buy a record, come to a show, buy a t-shirt. Are you kidding? I was one; I am one. I appreciate that. I appreciate them. And that's why we made this record, because we wanted it to be the best of the best of the best. It's a gift. Yeah, you've gotta pay for it. But I'm sorry, that's… it's society."

"Under The Midnight Sun" arrived in October via Black Hill Records . The LP was produced by Tom Dalgety ( PIXIES , GHOST , ROYAL BLOOD ). Dalgety is the first British producer THE CULT has worked with since its second album, "Love" (1985).

Astbury previously spoke highly of "Under The Midnight Sun" last July in an interview with Dayton Daily News . At the time, he said: "It is a different animal. It destroys 'Hidden City' and anything else we've done in quite a while. We dug deep and put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this record.

"It's a brave new world out there and we want to be a part of it, but you don't get to be a part of it unless you're doing your best work," he added. "There are no free passes for anyone. You're only as good as what's happening today."

In a separate interview with the Los Angeles Daily News , Astbury stated about "Under The Midnight Sun" : "This new album is a really honest, authentic depiction of where we are today. It's a very focused record and it's layered, it's dense, it's celebratory and it gets dark. There's a lot in this record. It's an amalgamation of THE CULT 's major influences, the DNA of the band all culminating in a very special moment."

Born out of the ashes of the U.K. post-punk scene, THE CULT evolved to become one of the most influential and controversial rock bands of the late 20th century, selling millions of albums, headlining arenas and stadiums around the world, infusing innovative possibilities into the worlds of music and art, and quickly ascending through the ranks of the indie music world to achieve global status. THE CULT , whose music transformed from punk rock to post-punk, psychedelia, heavy dance music and transcendental hard rock, became one of the handful of important bands in the U.S. post-modern and hard rock communities, and was embraced by a generation that was waking up to the influence of 1960s and 1970s rock icons like LED ZEPPELIN , THE NEW YORK DOLLS and David Bowie .

The constant core of THE CULT is the "head and heart" of the band, Astbury and guitarist/composer Billy Duffy . Attitude incarnate, the chemistry between these two vastly different artists — equal parts genuine affection and palpable tension — remains the source of their long-standing partnership. Duffy grounds Astbury 's esoteric side with a hard rock perspective, and there is no doubt that at all times, these two have each other's back. THE CULT 's current lineup also includes former WHITE ZOMBIE , EXODUS and TESTAMENT drummer John Tempesta .

About The Cult

The Cult formed in 1984 England, with the seminal post-punk band going on to sell millions of albums with numerous international and U.S. gold and platinum certifications. Ian Astbury (vocals) and Billy Duffy (guitar) have released 11 studio albums over The Cult’s career.

The band, dubbed “Shamanic goths”, found international renown with the 1985 album, Love, which featured the enduring rock anthem ‘She Sells Sanctuary’, as well as the oft-heard follow-up single, ‘Rain’. Electric arrived in 1989, with journalists saying the collection of songs (particularly ‘Love Removal Machine’, ‘Wild Flower’ and ‘Lil’ Devil’) “swaggers, crunches and howls.”

Most recently, The Cult released Under the Midnight Sun. A review of the eight-song album succinctly said “rock’s unquenchable melodramatists have the fire in their eyes still.” In late 2023, Astbury and Duffy reformed Death Cult for a series of live performances including a sole U.S. date at The Theatre at The Ace Hotel and a limited run of U.K. dates including back-to-back sold out shows at the Brixton Electric. Over the early months of 2024, the band has performed on The Howard Stern Show and begun a series of vinyl reissues of their full slate of critically-acclaimed albums.

The Cult add extra London show to 2024 UK anniversary tour

It comes after the band announced a 40th-anniversary tour earlier this month

Ian Astbury, left, and guitarist Billy Duffy of The Cult perform at The Pearl concert theater at Palms Casino Resort on October 27, 2023 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Cult have added an extra London show to their upcoming anniversary tour. Check out ticket details below.

The announcement comes just days after the rock icons announced details of an upcoming UK tour for the end of 2024 – which will see them celebrate 40 years as a band.

Upcoming shows will be held in 10 cities across the country, and mark the milestone anniversary of Ian Astbury and co. coming together as we recognise them today – swapping their name from the original title ‘Death Cult’ into ‘The Cult’.

Now, following the initial date at London’s Royal Albert Hall selling out, the band have announced details of a second show in the UK capital, this time held at the Roundhouse venue in Camden.

The date is added as an extension to the original run of shows and will take place on Tuesday, November 5 – the day after the Royal Albert Hall gig. Tickets are available now and you can check out an updated itinerary for the UK shows below.

The dates for 2024 come following a tour the band embarked on last year, celebrating 40 years since their first formation under the name ‘Death Cult’ .

Taking place around the UK, Ireland and the US, the tour was called ‘Death Cult 8323’ and saw Duffy and Astbury return to play iconic venues they previously performed in at the start of their career.

The live shows focused on Death Cult and their eponymous EPs, and also boasted a setlist that spanned “the three phases of the band, from Southern Death Cult, to Death Cult, and The Cult’s first two albums: ‘Dreamtime’ (1984) and ‘Love’ (1985).”

Announcing the new run of dates, guitarist Billy Duffy said: “Following up from the great energy of ‘Death Cult 8323’ shows, I’m looking forward to bringing that sense of celebration of the band’s music, and the communion with our fans, to ‘Cult 8424’… CFFC. Let the ceremony commence!”

More recently, Billy Duffy joined Johnny Marr on stage in Frome last summer to play tracks by The Smiths and Depeche Mode .

The 8424 Tour will sees The Cult perform songs spanning their 11-album discography.

In late 2023, vocalist Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy reformed Death Cult for a series of live performances  including back-to-back sold out shows at the Brixton Electric.

Shamanic goths

From Duffy’s formative, and influential, years in the Manchester underground, to Astbury’s groundbreaking Gathering of the Tribes, the duo has left an indelible mark on modern music, shaping its trajectory in profound ways.

Formed in 1984, the seminal post-punk band dubbed “Shamanic goths”, found international renown with the 1985 album, Love , which featured the enduring rock anthem She Sells Sanctuar y, as well as the oft-heard follow-up single, Rain .

Electric arrived in 1987, featuring the memorable tracks Love Removal Machine, Wild Flower and Lil’ Devil, and 1989’s Sonic Temple included the Top 20 hit Fire Woman.

The Cult will embark on a UK tour throughout autumn, starting in Leicester on 21 October. It will include stops in cities such as Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol, and London, with a show at the Royal Albert Hall.

The Cult performing on stage

The Cult has announced that they are set to embark on a new tour in celebration of their 40th anniversary.

The rock band announced The 8424 tour, a name which references the year they formed in 1984 and the year of this gig, 2024.

Much like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour , the band is set to perform some of their best hits from across their 11 albums – including She Sells Sanctuary, Rain, and Fire Woman.

The tour will travel across the UK and Europe, kicking off in the UK in October for 10 dates spanning into November.

While this is an exciting anniversary for the band who are back performing together, it’s not been a plain sailing road to get to this anniversary as the band has actually broken up twice in the past four decades.

The band first broke up in 1995 after 12 years together after it was reported that there were tensions between the two longest-serving members and main songwriters for the group, Billy Duffy and Ian Astbury.

In 1999 the band regrouped and released a seventh album Beyond Good and Evil in 2001. This was reportedly somewhat of a commercial flop which is what perhaps led to their second breakup.

The Cult band members

In 2002 the band broke up again and didn’t reunite until 2006. Since then the band has released four albums with the latest, Under the Midnight Sun, being released just two years ago in 2022.

Before settling on their current name, The Cult, the band also performed under the name Death Cult from 1983–1984.

In 2023, performing under the name Death Cult, guitarist Duffy and frontman Astbury, went on tour performing some of their best hits under the name Death Cult 8323.

The Cult's guitarist Billy Duffy

Guitarist Billy Duffy referenced the tour last year, which included a series of sold out shows at the Brixton Electric, as inspiration for the whole band coming together for this new tour.

‘Following up from the great energy of Death Cult 8323 shows, I’m looking forward to bringing that sense of celebration of the band’s music, and the communion with our fans, to Cult 8424. CFFC. Let the ceremony commence!’

Fans who want to get their hands on tickets to see the band won’t have to wait too long as tickets go on general sale this Friday at 10am.

The band appears to be following a popular trend among 80s hit artists as many other beloved bands from this era have announced comeback tours for 2024.

In March, Fairground attraction announced their return and that their four original members are reuniting not just for a tour, but for a brand new album to boot!

Similarly, the New Kids on the Block announced their return with their first album in over a decade.

Singer-songwriter Sananda Maitreya is also set to perform this summer . Formerly known as Terence Trent D’Arby, the 80s artist will be giving a rare performance at the Love Supreme Jazz Festival.
