9 of the best travel websites

Take the hassle out of holiday planning with our guide to the websites that do the hard work for you.

travel websites uk

T he first place most of us look when planning a trip is online — but where should you start? If you have a preferred travel agent with a high level of customer service, they will likely handle the details for you. But when you’re arranging the trip yourself, you can spend hours browsing online and end up more confused than when you started.

If you’d like destination inspiration, take a look at Times Travel . But if you want to piece the trip together yourself, these websites are our favourites for everything from flights to passenger rights and books for the beach.

1. FlightConnections

Best for flight planning Have an idea of where you want to go, but flexible on which airports you could use? Or maybe you just want to see which routes operate non-stop from your nearest airport. No other website makes a map of the world’s international routing options as clear and easy to understand as FlightConnections.

If you’re in Birmingham and you don’t fancy schlepping to a London airport, for example, you can see at a glance that there are non-stop flights from BHX to Cancun, Egypt, the Canaries and Dubai. Or maybe you want to go to Valencia in Spain, but you can’t find any flights from BHX. With FlightConnections, you might see that non-stop flights are available from Nottingham East Midlands (EMA) — a much closer journey than London.

Click on your preferred route, and it’ll also show you which dates the route operates non-stop, so you know which dates to search for.

Best for flight price comparison The top four players — Google Flights , Kayak , Momondo and Skyscanner — are all excellent flight-comparison websites.

But Kayak has the edge. Its search results pages are clear and have the best range of useful filters. You can see instantly how much premium economy on the same route would cost, for example, instead of having to do another search from scratch. You can add a cabin bag or hold bag, easily remove the results from airports you don’t want to have your layover in, and even narrow your search to the type of aircraft you’d prefer to fly with.

Trivago lets you compare prices of hotels such as the Balthazar Design Hotel in Krakow (Trivago)

Best for hotel bookings A lot of people think Booking.com, Hotels.com and Expedia are hotel-comparison sites. They aren’t — they’re booking sites. Yes, you can book thousands of hotels with them, but they will only show you their own negotiated prices for each particular hotel.

That’s why your first port of call for any hotel research should be Trivago. It takes prices from all of the major hotel-booking sites, including the three mentioned above, plus hundreds more booking sites and online travel agencies.

The Scotsman Hotel, Edinburgh, is among Booking.com’s listings (Booking.com)

4. Booking.com

Best for hotel reviews The reviews on TripAdvisor can be written by anyone, whether they’ve stayed at the hotel or not. And multiple investigations have shown how many fake reviews flood the site.

That’s why our go-to site for hotel reviews is Booking.com. Only people who have paid for a booking via Booking.com can write a review. This means its reviews are much more reliable. It’s not 100 per cent foolproof, but it is much more reliable than most alternative review sites. You can find reviews for most of the world’s hotels — and you don’t have to book with them to read the reviews. Just browse, then check out Trivago.co.uk to find the cheapest deal on your preferred hotel.

A train in Mishima, Japan (Alamy)

5. Seat61.com

Best for train advice Thinking of switching plane for train — or riding the rails on a scenic journey at your destination? The first port of call for any train lover should be Seat61.com. What started as a hobby site more than 15 years ago is now the UK’s best site for train advice — for routes all over the world. It covers the best train-booking sites in different destinations, plus how to get the best deals, which seats to choose on many routes, and more.

House swap in Sydney, Australia (Getty Images)

6. HomeExchange

Best for house swaps What’s cheaper — and arguably better — than the likes of Airbnb and Vrbo? A free home swap — mi casa es su casa. Unlike Airbnb, no money changes hands between homeowners. You’ll pay a fee to join the site, but during your membership period, on most sites, you are allowed to make as many free home exchanges as you can negotiate with other homeowners.

Each site has its pros and cons, but the world’s largest site HomeExchange, which costs $175 (£140)/year to join, wins by virtue of the fact that it lists more than 450,000 homes all over the world. Home-swapping is, ultimately, a numbers game. You’ll massively increase your chances of finding someone suitable to swap with in Sydney if there are more than 100 potential homes in Sydney for you to contact about the arrangement.

Seeing Cape Town, South Africa, by car (Getty Images)

7. Zest Car Rental

Best for car hire You can do a car-hire search on the major flight-comparison websites, plus with car-rental comparison specialists, such as Rhino . But there’s a reason Zest Car Rental consistently ranks in the top table of customer surveys and is the choice of Which? as recommended car hire broker.

The game for car-hire companies is to appear at the top of the comparison sites, which means they hide the real cost of the “extras” that are often essential, such as excess-reducing insurance or a full-to-full fuel policy. (With full-to-empty fuel policies, you usually end up paying for fuel you didn’t use when you return the car with a quarter of a tank or more.)

With Zest Car Rental, in most cases, excess-reducing insurance is included in the price you see, and in many cases, the second driver is also included in the rate. Zest only works with providers who have a “fair fuel” policy, and customer services is fast to respond to any questions or problems.

Reading in Mexico (Getty Images)

8. TripFiction

Best for literary escapes Whether your travels are strictly armchair this year or you’re heading off on holiday, reading a novel set in your destination can really put you in the mood. The best place to look for your travel reads is TripFiction. Despite the name, it’s not entirely fiction, with biographies, travelogues, history and recipe books sneaking into their listings.

Choose your preferred country or region and browse all titles — or narrow it down by genre, such as crime or fantasy. A list of books appears, with summaries for you to find out more before deciding whether to buy.

Read up on your rights about lost luggage (Alamy)

9. Civil Aviation Authority

Best for passenger rights At a loss for what to do if your flight gets cancelled, your luggage gets lost or you get stuck in queues at security and miss a flight ? You’ll find all of your passenger rights on the Civil Aviation Authority website.

It’s worth taking a look before your trip, too, so you can be sure you have suitable travel insurance to help with the increasingly common problems that the law doesn’t provide enough coverage for, such as delays at airport security.

How to find cheap flight deals with momondo

  • How does momondo find such cheap airfare? momondo searches across hundreds of airlines and travel sites, from major booking sites to individual company sites, to give you as many cheap airfare options as possible. When you conduct a single search on momondo, you can find and compare cheap airline tickets like you’ve done hundreds of searches at once. momondo is completely free to use - with no hidden charges or fees - and the prices you see are never affected by your searches, no matter how many you make. We believe in an open world, where travelling and getting acquainted across borders and cultures is available to us all, so we’re committed to showing you the cheapest flights in our flight finder.
  • How do I find the best price on plane tickets? Choose your destination and preferred travel dates, and we’ll provide you with an overview of the cheapest, quickest, and best flights so you can compare prices and book flights with confidence. Flexible on dates? It’s even easier to find cheap flights by using our Price Calendar (found above your search results), which shows you the cheapest travel dates. This is available on all of our most popular flight routes.
  • How can Mix & Match save me money? Sometimes you can save money by combining flight tickets from different suppliers, and we call that Mix & Match. This means you can book your outbound flight with one supplier, and your return flight with another. If you can save money by combining tickets from different suppliers, we’ll automatically include this option in your flight results and label it Mix & Match. You’ll have to complete two separate booking flows after you select this deal on our site, but it’s worth it if you can save money over a traditional round-trip with one supplier. It’s an advanced way of getting the cheapest flights even if they’re offered by different suppliers.
  • How do I make sure I don’t miss a flight deal? Sign up for Price Alerts on your favourite flight routes and automatically get live price updates, so you can book flights when the price is right. You can do so next to your flight search results or in the profile menu. If you're on our app, you will find Price Alerts in the navigation menu. You can also subscribe to special offers and limited-time flight deals from our partners. Just sign in, go to Notifications in your profile and subscribe to the topics you’re interested in.

travel websites uk

From discounts on luxury hotels to searching for cheap flights, these are the sites you need to bookmark when you feel ready to travel again.

Sometimes simply Googling "cheap holidays" isn't enough. For the best travel offers you might need to dig a little deeper, whether that's subscribing to a mailing list or scrolling through to find the least expensive flights. Here's our pick of the websites that help you get more for your money.

For high-end hotels: Secret Escapes

Offering up to 65% off luxury stays, Secret Escapes is a free members' website, with fantastic deals on hotel stays as well as trips that also include travel. Deals are all available for a limited time only, and it's particularly strong on short escapes, with categories including ' Stars of the week ' and ' Within two hours of London '. There are longer-term and longer-haul options available too.

Don’t scroll past ‘Today’s top travel deals', which change daily and include getaways with the biggest savings and lowest prices. Destinations range from continental Europe to luxurious long-haul escapes, like Mauritius and Barbados. The website also has a separate search tab specifically for Eurostar deals.

For city break deals: Jet2holidays

Sometimes a short city break away is enough to recharge your batteries and soak up some (different) scenery. In that case, Jet2holidays is top choice. Whether it's Rome or Athens, Palma or Krakow, you can narrow your search down to find the perfect escape for a very decent price. Keep an eye on the daily deals too.

For cut-price flights: Cheapflights.co.uk

For cheap hotels: Booking.com

TOP BOOKING SITES FOR UK TRAVEL PLANNING

Wondering where to start when booking your UK trip? In this article, we share some of our favourite booking sites for UK travel.

If you are planning your UK vacation you may be wondering which are the best travel booking sites to use to sort out the essentials. From flights and hotels to tours and attraction tickets there are many booking sites available to choose from.

After years of travel (and making hundreds of bookings), I have a number of go-to companies that I use regularly when planning and booking my trips.

In this post, you will find some of our favourite travel booking sites we use for UK travel.

Booking.com

🚗 airport transfers, london transport – oyster card, train travel in the uk, the london pass, the london eye, professional photographer, harry potter studios, get your guide, with locals, john england tours, tours by locals, travel insurance, happy uk travel planning, accommodation.

I choose booking.com for the majority of my accommodation books and have used them for years.

They have a wide range of accommodation options available including hotels, apartments and guesthouses.

Many offer free cancellation up to 24 hours before. This is something I recommend and have found invaluable recently. It also enables some flexibility of planning.

I find their prices competitive too and their reviews and ratings useful tools when choosing my accommodation.

UK Accommodation guides : London ~ England ~ Scotland ~ Wales ~ Northern Ireland

If you prefer holiday accommodation with more space, privacy or freedom than a hotel may offer we recommend booking a VRBO .

When researching flights remember to open an incognito tab so your information is not saved by the airline companies! Also check either side of your selected dates to see if there are cheaper options available!

I recommend checking out prices using a flight comparison website. I use Skyscanner and have done for a few years now.

Getting from the airport to our accommodation with little hassle and stress is always my aim. There is nothing more disorientating than landing in a foreign country with no idea how to get to your final destination.

There are obviously lots of options and you can read my dedicated posts to help you plan (train/taxi/bus etc) but if you prefer to book a private transfer or even a shared transfer ahead of your arrival we recommend Riz (our preferred partner for transportation needs in the south-east and London.)

A common question for those of you planning to spend some time in London is how to get around the capital. You can read more about the various forms of London transport including the Tube, buses, boats and bicycles in our complete guide.

Pay for transport with an Oyster card (which can be purchased at Heathrow on arrival) or at a Tube station, visitor centre and in most newsagents around London or you can also use contactless methods of payment (just check for any foreign exchange charges)

Taking the train around the UK is a great way to see the countryside and can be cheaper and easier than driving or flying depending on where you go.

UK-Train-Travel-ebook-for-website

If you are planning to travel the UK by train (or even take one or two-day trips by train) I recommend booking in advance to get the best deals.

Check journeys with the trainline.com or Omio when planning train journeys in the UK – you can also book your tickets online with them too.

Britrail Passes

A great way to save on train tickets when travelling in the UK is to purchase a BritRail Pass or a Eurail Global Pass (find out more about these train passes here )

These passes can be purchased to cover areas and regions of the UK as well as countries.

You can find out BritRail Passes here or the Eurail Global Pass here.

If you plan to travel over to mainland Europe it is an easy and quick option to take the Eurostar from St Pancras International in London. I would recommend this option over flying and we love taking this trip.

Again I would recommend purchasing as much in advance as possible – ticket prices rise the closer to the departure date you book.

If you are considering taking a road trip in the UK or just want to hire a car for one or two-day trips I recommend taking a look at our guide to driving in the UK which includes information and tips.

For car hire, we recommend comparing prices to get the best deals. Either via your regular international car hire firm or using a comparison site such as Discover Cars which compares prices, offers free cancellation ( read t’s & c’s ) and shares tips about what to look for to find a great car rental deal.

Tickets for major attractions, events and experiences

If you are planning to visit some of the most popular attractions during your trip I highly recommend booking ahead.

The queues can be very long particularly during the main tourist months in the UK. If you purchase your tickets prior to arriving you will not only be guaranteed entry but spend less time waiting to get in and have more time to enjoy your holiday.

I have provided links below so you can price up to and/or buy your tickets. If you are planning to visit a lot of the main tourist attractions in London it may be cost-effective to purchase a London Pass .

Frequently asked questions

What do i need to know before booking a flight.

There are various factors to consider when booking a flight including cost, fare classes, baggage policies, the complications of flying long haul, and complying with airport regulations. To make your booking journey smoother KAYAK has developed a comprehensive flight guide including insights on finding affordable flights, packing efficiently, and utilising the best travel tools.

What is the cheapest day of the week to book a flight?

The best day to book your flight depends on a number of factors, but there are general trends that you can follow to increase your chances of cheaper plane tickets. Based on an analysis of KAYAK data for all flights departing from inside United Kingdom over the last 12 months, the cheapest day to fly for domestic flights is Wednesday. For international flights, Tuesday had the cheapest tickets on average.

Which month of the year are flight prices lowest?

It’s well established that flights in the low season are generally cheaper than ticket prices during the high season. That means that knowing which month to find the lowest priced plane tickets will depend heavily on seasonality and your destination. While avoiding peak travel times can help you keep costs down, our data shows that the month with the lowest priced plane tickets for domestic flights based on all searches made on KAYAK in the last 12 months was January, while the most expensive was August. If you’re booking an international flight, then April is the cheapest month to fly and July the most expensive.

When is the best time to buy plane tickets - Last minute or in advance?

Last minute flight deals are definitely up for grabs, but when exactly to purchase your plane tickets will depend on where you’re travelling to and from. Based on all data for flight searches made on KAYAK over the last 12 months, prices for domestic flights remained below the average price up to 1 week before departure. For international flights, deals could still be had up to 1 week prior to the departure date, with prices remaining below average. If you’re flexible, KAYAK brings you both advance and last minute one-way and round-trip flight deals.

Can flying international flights with a layover save money on airfare?

For many long-haul international flights, flying direct is not possible and you will have to fly with stopover. Some routes will offer both and you could consider flying with a stopover for a number of reasons. Firstly, breaking up what would otherwise be a long-haul flight, taking a rest and then completing the journey might make the flight more manageable. Secondly, prices can also be lower than direct flights, so while it might take longer for you to reach your destination, you could save money. We’ve looked at prices over the last 12 months for the 100 most popular international destinations for KAYAK users and on average, prices for non-stop flights were cheaper than flights with a layover.

How does KAYAK find such low flight prices?

KAYAK processes over 2 billion flight queries annually and displays results from hundreds of airlines and third party sites, allowing it to find a variety of flight prices and options. It also displays results from 2M+ properties along with car hire, holiday packages, activities and millions of verified reviews so users can see as many available travel options as possible.

How do I find the best flight deals on KAYAK?

A simple flight search at https://www.kayak.co.uk/flights scans for prices on hundreds of travel sites in seconds. We gather flight deals from across the web and put them in one place. Then on the search results page you can use various filters to compare options for the same flight and easily choose the best flight deal from all of the deals coming straight from the travel sites to your screen, with no extra fee from KAYAK.

How can Hacker Fares save me money?

Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets on different airlines when it can save you money over a traditional return ticket.

Does KAYAK query more flight providers than competitors?

Yes, KAYAK has access to more data and information than online travel agencies and consistently outperforms the competition in accuracy, globally.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy?

KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a given destination and date is likely to change within 7 days, so travellers know whether to wait or book now.

What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care?

Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you flights up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. That way, you can see if leaving a day or two earlier will find you a better deal. You can also select the flexible 'weekend' or 'month' search options to widen your search range and find the cheapest price that works for you.

Search cheap flights with KAYAK. Search for the cheapest airline tickets for all the top airlines around the world and the top international flight routes . KAYAK searches hundreds of travel sites to help you find cheap airfare and book a flight that suits you best. Since KAYAK searches many plane ticket sites at once, you can find cheap tickets from cheap airlines and for trains and buses quickly.

KAYAK also helps you find the right hotels for your needs.

Verified reviews from real guests.

We have more than 70 million property reviews, all from real, verified guests .

How does it work?

It starts with a booking.

The only way to leave a review is to first make a booking. That's how we know our reviews come from real guests who have stayed at the property.

Followed by a trip

When guests stay at the property, they check out how quiet the room is, how friendly the staff is, and more.

And finally, a review

After their trip, guests tell us about their stay. We check for naughty words and verify the authenticity of all guest reviews before adding them to our site.

If you booked through us and want to leave a review, please sign in first.

The experts:

Mark Hodson founded 101holidays.co.uk , and 101honeymoons.co.uk

Abigail King is a travel writer and blogger, insidethetravellab.com

Srin Madipalli is CEO of Accomable

Julia Buckley is acting head of travel at The Independent

Mathura Premaruban is PR director at Hills Balfour's HB Luxe

Cynthia Drescher is a freelance travel journalist and digital editor

John Walton is an aviation journalist and deputy editor of Runway Girl Network

“If, like me, the idea of queuing for a restaurant while on holiday turns your stomach, this is your website,” says Srin. “With more than 40,000 restaurants to choose from, it’s still the biggest and best – and lets you search for places to eat by district, cuisine and review score, before booking your table for free. It’s particularly handy if you’re travelling through busy cities like London, New York or Sydney, where bagging a table at a peak time in a popular spot can be impossible without a reservation. For European cities including Paris and Madrid, French website, the Fork, is a little fiddlier to use, but does the same job.”

opentable.com

Sky Park Secure

“While no one’s going to get excited about airport parking, the fact remains that the costs – and inconveniences involved – can quickly mount up,” says Abigail. “This site compares more than 300 airport car parks at over 28 airports to help find you the best deal, but the algorithm goes beyond budget alone. Car parks are monitored for quality and the deals include official airport parking and meet & greet options as well as the more economical park and ride end of the scale.”

skyparksecure.com

“So you’ve landed at your destination and you’re overwhelmed with options of what to see, eat, and do, but there are some challenges to accomplishing it all,” says Cynthia Drescher. “Viator offers activities that help travellers get to the heart of the local experience while removing some of the roadblocks. For example, I was in Tallinn and wanted to a see more of Estonia without having to rent a car on my own. Through a Viator experience, I joined a small group daytrip to nearby beaches and hiked through a quarry known for its otherworldly scenery. On my first night in Hoi An, Vietnam, I left all my dinner decisions to a translator and a Viator tasting tour of the best banh mi sandwiches. Greatest idea ever.”

Google Maps

“It might sound obvious, but with its local information, handy satnav directions and downloadable map options, Google Maps is a godsend for the modern traveller,” says John Walton. “There are so many options – walking, driving, transport and more – that you should make sure you have a handle on all of them before travelling.”

maps.google.com

“The last few years have seen a growth in the number of websites and apps that promise to act as a personal travel assistant, but in my experience, this non-travel focused site wins hands down,” says Abigail. “For a monthly or yearly fee, you can submit 20-minute requests by email, phone, text or direct to a 24-hour cyber-team who will spring straight to work. Savour your travel time by allowing someone else to zip through your to-do list: confirm the hotel booking has a cot, find three suggestions for dinner, call to explain flight is delayed, find quickest way to the art museum, and so on. These days, I wonder how I got things done without it.”

fancyhands.com

“Want to figure out how to travel in comfort as well as style? Routehappy (where I used to be Director of Data back in 2014) will help you pick a flight based on whether there’s good legroom, wider seats, new planes, faster wifi, fewer neighbours and a lot more,” says John Walton.

routehappy.com

“This is a flight search engine for people who are flexible on when they fly,” says Mark. “So you can type in a request such as, ‘London to Los Angeles leaving next week under £800’ and see what comes up. If the fares are too high, you can set an email alert that will let you know when the price reaches your budget. It’s intuitive, fun to use and nicely designed.”

“Can't remember the name of your hotel? Simply forward all your email booking confirmations to this nifty planning tool and it will pop them into in one sleek, shareable itinerary, covering everything from flights to restaurants,” says Srin. “It's particularly useful if, like me, you're a bit of a planning nut, or if you have a complex itinerary and plan to venture from place to place.”

“Perhaps one of the best things about travelling to a new place is trying new food and drink when you’re there,” says Cynthia. “Eater is a site that reports on everything from the latest trends in ingredients (and where to try them) to which chefs are opening new restaurants and where. Eater’s fantastic and exhaustive airport dining guides even aid you in deciding what to eat when you’re in between places.”

Euan’s Guide

“Looking for accessible places to visit? Euan MacDonald, the man behind this eponymous guide, and a fellow power chair user, has dedicated the past four years to digging out the best accessible attractions with unfailingly honest and detailed reviews,” says Srin. “It’s particularly useful for the UK, though more than 30 countries are covered. I particularly like that it goes beyond the usual well known tourist attractions to include more esoteric stuff like pop up festivals, farmers’ markets and little community theatres.”

euansguide.com

“Yes, Hipmunk is a travel search engine for the likes of airfare, hotel rates, and rental cars, but it’s also an innovator in that space,” says Cynthia. "Instead of simply organising results by what’s cheapest, Hipmunk applies an ‘agony‘ filter to show which flights, ranked by length of travel time combined with layovers and price, will be best for your money. They are then displayed on a grid that better represents what part of your day the plans will occupy, in order to help you plan around it instead of giving over an entire day to travel.”

hipmunk.com

“Skyscanner faithfully pulls in airfares into an easy-to-search, easy-to-use flight finder and fare comparison website,” says Abigail. “What sets it apart is the number of ways you can filter your search results. You can narrow it right down to a preferred airline, flight duration and departure time or go wild and search for ‘anywhere in the UK’ to ‘anywhere in France’. It’s an essential part of my travel armoury.”

skyscanner.net

Owners Direct

“There’s a lot to dislike about Owners Direct, starting with the buggy 1990s-style website,” says Julia. “But it’s also a brilliant resource for self-catering accommodation that bypasses the middle man – you’re communicating direct with the owners. Where Airbnb is great for short city breaks, Owners Direct is unbeatable for longer stays – especially in the UK, where most cottages in places like Cornwall rent by the week. It’s part of the HomeAway behemoth (including VRBO) which means that you can also find great places in Europe and the US as well – two of my all-time favourite stays in Greece and California I found on here. Just remember to make sure the person you’re communicating with is the real owner of the property, and bypass the ‘reserve’ button and make an ‘enquiry’ instead – that way, you don’t pay the site the commission fee (about 10%) for putting you in touch.”

ownersdirect.co.uk

Accuweather

“Like a true Brit, I like to keep a keen eye on the weather,” says Srin. “This site is one of the best for travellers, as it lets you home in on off the beaten track destinations, from lesser known Greek islands to villages in northern Thailand. You can see an hour-by hour forecast for on-the-day planning, as well as an extended forecast for the entire month ahead, though the accuracy of this is somewhat doubtful.”

accuweather.com

Canopy and Stars

“Sawday’s was one of the first companies to jump on the glamping bandwagon, and it really shows,” says Julia. “This website is always my go-to if I want something slightly different. Glamping can be grim, but I know that these have all been vetted, and the reviews, though brief, give a great impression of what you’re in for. There’s a huge worldwide selection.”

canopyandstars.co.uk

Google Flights

“There’s nothing better than Google Flights for figuring out your flight options,” says John. “Top tip: if you know your airport codes, you can search to or from up to five airports at a time, which is ideal if you’re within striking distance of several airports or want to hit a region but don’t care which airport you fly into.”

Time Out London

“I grew up in London, but still feel like I haven’t scratched the surface when it comes to the capital’s myriad attractions,” says Srin. “This regularly updated guide is here to help you out, with comprehensive listings that cover everything from the biggest exhibitions and musicals to roof top bars, new street food hangouts and intimate gigs. I love the regular weekend guides, which always include free things to do.”

“A door-to-door travel search engine that shows times, prices and even carbon emissions, whether you plan to fly, drive, take the train, bus or ferry,” says Mark. “For example, it’s a two-hour flight from Gatwick to Venice, but from my front door to Piazza San Marco will take six hours 24 minutes, apparently, including a 41-minute ferry ride to Ospedale, followed by an 18-minute walk. Getting to the Falkland Islands would take me 31 hours 40 minutes. It’s a fun and addictive site, but it can be beaten: it couldn’t find a way from my house to the South Pole.”

rome2rio.com

Google Translate

“I remember when Google first offered its translation service, just over 10 years ago, the results were either dodgy or indecipherable (generally both),” says Srin. “These days it’s pretty slick. I use it for translating websites into English, but it comes into its own when you’re travelling, and are struggling for a word or need to ask a question.”

translate.google.co.uk

Vital Vegas

“There’s nothing like local blogs for finding out the newest openings and trends in a place, but make sure you’re getting a blog that’s free from PR influence,” says Julia. “Vital Vegas is loathed by many Sin City PRs because it consistently breaks the stories they don’t want you to hear about, whether that’s charging for ice in drinks or decreasing the shot size in gamblers’ free drinks. But it also has its finger on the pulse of what’s going on.”

vitalvegas.com

TripAdvisor

“Love it or hate it, TripAdvisor is the daddy of hotel review websites,” says Mark. “Yes, it can be manipulated by unscrupulous hoteliers, but it has such a large bank of hotel reviews that the occasional bad one rarely influences the overall score. And it’s not just hotels – reviews of restaurants and tourist attractions are generally reliable, too. Its smartphone app is particularly good too.”

tripadvisor.co.uk

“If you’re heading to a country that speaks one of the languages Duolingo covers (including, most recently, Japanese) you could do a lot worse to learn the language than this fun language learning app,” says John. “Some of the phrases are delightfully weird, and its AI gets hung up on grammar points occasionally when you might really be preferring to learn vocab, but it’s free, easy and includes oral and listening options.”

duolingo.com

“This is the perfect site for the eco-luxury traveller, ” says Mathura Premaruban. “Founded by Juliet Kinsman, she has travelled the world to bring together the finest luxury and boutique hotels that positively contribute to and change their local communities and ultimately the wider world. It is ideal for those that don’t want to compromise on luxury but still want to be environmentally and socially aware.”

“The world is so huge, and there are just so many places to go that organising your ‘must visit’ list can be a daunting task,” says Cynthia Drescher. “Well, Hitlist is here to help. Not only does it organise your ever-expanding destinations and allows you to share your picks with friends, but it constantly scrapes for updated airfare data to let you know when ticket prices are a steal. Technically it’s an app, but Hitlist has also rolled out a Google Chrome extension named the ‘Wandertab’ that draws from the company’s wealth of destination and airfare deals to inspire you with destination images and information every time you open a new tab in the browser.”

hitlistapp.com

Holiday Pirates

“Amid all the cheap deals sites, there’s nothing like Holiday Pirates,” says Julia. "It combs the internet to find the very best deals on package holidays, city breaks and flights – even super-cheap ‘mistake’ fares. You can regularly get a week in the sun for about £100 and longhaul flights from around £200. What’s even better is that it often packages up things for you to suggest the best deal, so it’ll tell you to book this flight, that hotel and that hire car individually.”

holidaypirates.com

Weather2Travel

“Some travel brochures and tour operator websites have selected climate information, but it can be misleading,” says Mark. “For detailed climate information about any destination, Weather2Travel is the place to go. It shows everything from humidity levels to sea temperatures, for any month of the year, as well as current conditions and there’s an interactive tool to find your chances of getting caught in a tropical storm.”

weather2travel.com

Small Luxury Hotels of the World

“The leader in the world of special escapes, Small Luxury Hotels of the World is exactly as the name suggests,” says Abigail. “In addition to vetting boutique hotels for you, its membership scheme provides extra perks such as free upgrades, late check-ins and sometimes wine on arrival.”

Flight Aware

“You could use Flight Aware to check if a flight is due to land on time but that would kind of miss the point,” says Srin. “More than anything else, this is a really cool piece of tech. It tracks thousands of aircraft in real time as they cross countries and oceans to reach airports around the globe. On a map it’s mindboggling to look at, and a must for tech and travel geeks alike.”

uk.flightaware.com

“There’s a lot of ski information on the web, much of it badly written or out-of-date,” says Mark. “WeLove2Ski is put together by specialist travel writers and is packed with balanced resort reviews, snow reports and advice on everything from technique to clothing. It’s the best all-round ski website.”

welove2ski.com

“Easy Taxi has changed my life,” says Julia. “I’m not a fan of Uber or other ridesharing apps, but this works by hooking you up with real, licensed cab drivers in 170 cities in the world – and you can pay by credit card or cash. It’s not just about not needing to queue anymore (the taxi comes to you). It has changed the way I travel in South America – in places like Buenos Aires or Rio, where you’re warned to be wary of flagging certain cabs, this provides extra security, and it also helps with language barriers, because you’ve already input your destination into the system.

easytaxi.com

“If I want to know what’s going on in Europe, I go straight to The Local,” says Julia. “It’s a great curated feed of news with nine editions from around the continent, and it also has more fun content – like a recent piece on Italian hand gestures. I love it.”

thelocal.com

Matrix Airfare Search

“This one is definitely for travel nerds,” says Mathura. “This no-nonsense site allows you to plan complex multi-route journeys and find the lowest fare. The only snag is that you can’t purchase directly from ITA Software but if you find a fare you like, you can give the information from this site to your travel agent or airline when making a booking. I spend hours on it planning far-flung trips.”

matrix.itasoftware.com

AA Route Planner

“Available to members and non-members alike, the AA website includes a free route planner that goes beyond the UK into the rest of Europe,” says Abigail. “It’s perfect for checking driving times, distances, and other useful tools include lists on what you’ll need for driving in different countries, from snow chains to fluorescent jackets.”

theaa.com/route-planner/index.jsp

Rentalcars.com

“I rent a lot of cars in the US and have never found a cheaper deal than what Rentalcars.com offers,” says Julia. “They’re unbeatable in America (and add on extras, such as free one-way rentals in California and Nevada which is great for road-tripping) and they’re also very strong on UK and Europe rentals. They have excellent customer service too, if anything ever goes wrong. Always my first port of call.”

rentalcars.com

Context Travel

“An afternoon with Context will change your impression of guided tours forever,” says Abigail. “Context recruits academics who are passionate about their subject and who live in the area they’re working in. Thus, you’ll find experts on the Cold War in Berlin and architectural experts tracking down Roman remains in central London. In-depth, informed and interesting, these walking tours are simply outstanding.”

contexttravel.com

CDC Travel Health

“This is THE website my doctor friends swear by when it comes to getting trustworthy travel health advice,” says Abigail. “Of course, you should always consult your own healthcare professional, but this website can give you a crucial heads-up when it comes to working out what vaccines you’ll need. It also provides the latest news on travel health updates country by country and region by region. Essential reading.”

cdc.gov/travel

“Instagram gets a bad rap,” says Julia. “And for good reason – the rampage of tourists visiting sites that have become famous on the ‘Gram and spending more time on their filters than on looking at a destination really grinds my gears. And yet Instagram is still a great place to get inspiration of where to go and what to see. I tend to skip over professional travel Instagrammers for more authentic feeds – I love @jetsetcd , run by a travel journalist who takes amazing photos (fellow panellist Cynthia Drescher), @lisajanemurray who highlights climate change through her photography and @megancstarr , a solo traveller who specialises in Eastern Europe.”

instagram.com

Green Traveller

“If you’d rather not fly – whether you hate the experience or worry about your carbon footprint – Green Traveller is packed with holiday ideas,” says Mark. “There’s everything from yurt camps in the south of France to ski touring in Scotland, all of which you can reach by train, coach or ferry. The site is well-designed and written by expert journalists.”

greentraveller.co.uk

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office Travel Advice Guide

“While it may not be the most exciting recommendation, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website still earns a place on my essential travel checklist,” says Abigail. “Problems abroad change fast and it’s always good to have reliable advice on what you’re dealing with. In addition to the latest security alerts and some travel health advice, you’ll find useful tips on what you can pack in your hand luggage plus the necessary emergency information should the worst occur while you’re away.”

gov.uk/foreign-traveladvice-guide

Spotted By Locals

“Rather than rely on an outdated guidebook, Spotted By Locals allows you to get tips from insiders,” says Mark. “Locals in 40 European cities blog about their favourite restaurants, bars, shops and festivals – it’s like having a friend show you the best spots. You can buy a PDF guide to each city or download the free smartphone app.”

spottedbylocals.com

“A travel currency service is never going to be the most inspiring thing on the web,” admits Srin. “But a few clicks on this site gets you free next day delivery and more bang for your buck than the high street. They’re a young company, and keen to please, so I got a friendly follow up call from their team too. If you travel a lot, I find their prepaid currency cards are handy. You just transfer money from your bank onto the card, and can spend or withdraw it anywhere that accepts Mastercard worldwide.”

“Specialist wheelchair accessible taxis can be ruinously expensive, so this new service is a bit of lifesaver,” says Srin Madipalli. “It costs the same as a regular Uber but wait times are generally longer due to fewer vehicles. It’s not available everywhere but I’ve found good coverage in London, and you can also use it in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Toronto.”

Runway Girl Network

“Runway Girl Network is run by the kind of aviation experts who know when you’ve used a photo of the wrong plane type in a story,” says Julia Buckley. “But it’s different from other aviation websites because it focuses on the passenger experience, rather than intricate geekery – right down to inflight film reviews. Their knowledge is second to none. Also, it’s run by a woman, Mary Kirby, and makes a concerted effort to increase diversity in its coverage, writers and sources – which is the icing on the cake.”

runwaygirlnetwork.com

Travellers Point

“One of the world’s largest travel community sites, Travellers Point features 30,000 blogs and more than 1.4m photos,” says Mark. “It has active forums where you can ask just about anything, plus a neat travel planning widget. Starting up your own blog takes seconds.”

travellerspoint.com

Design Hotels

“As the name suggests, this website relishes good design when it comes to getting a good night’s sleep on the road,” says Abigail. “Design Hotels presents a collection of more than 300 independent hotels in over 50 countries, with benefits for members ranging from discounts on car hire to deals on the hotels themselves. But the real joy lies in uncovering hotels that please the eye, as chrome bedsteads compete with bare brick and thick velvet curtains for the most surprisingly stylish place to sleep.”

designhotels.com

“The idea behind Airbnb is simple: rather than stay at a hotel, you can rent somebody’s spare room,” says Mark. “Since it launched in 2008, it has become a global phenomenon, with more than 300,000 listings in 192 countries. Not just spare rooms, but apartments, family houses, villas, treehouses, you name it. The site is simple and easy to use, with lots of photographs, user reviews and star ratings.”

The Man in Seat 61

“If you’re planning a rail trip anywhere in the world, Mark Smith should be your first port of call,” says John. “With suggestions for trips as well as clear explanations of what you get in each class or for each railpass, this is an invaluable resource for figuring out how the trains work and how to buy tickets.”

“I came across this cool mapping tool at an accessibility event in Toronto, and was immediately hooked,” says Srin. “Set up by Maayan Ziv, a bit of a rockstar in the disabled community, it uses crowdsourced data to pinpoint accessible locations on an online map. Perfect for when you’re on the go, and want to pop into an accessible café or bar without the faff of having to do tonnes of research or planning in advance.”

Furthermore

“This blog from posh US gym chain Equinox goes beyond the ‘what to eat’ and ‘where to stay’-style articles to dispense real advice from sport and nutrition professionals for active travellers,” says Cynthia. “Their guide to holistic eateries and traveller-friendly workout studios in Berlin as well as articles that detail healthy ways to spend a layover offer real, creative solutions and insight you don’t typically find on travel sites.”

In Your Pocket

“On a trip to Johannesburg last year, this was the only guide I could find that was up-to-date and informative about the city,” says Julia. “Everything else I saw skirted around what there was to offer and treated it as a hub for Kruger National Park, but this really got under the skin. I’ve been a fan of In Your Pocket since then. Whatever the city, they really know their stuff.”

inyourpocket.com

“Hotel websites can be impossible to sift through, and sometimes they can feel like little more than targeted ads,” says Julia. “But that’s where i-escape comes in. It’s genuinely curated, offers a fantastic selection of mainly independent hotels, and has proper, genuine reviews that tell you who this is and isn’t for, rather than pretend everyone’s going to love it. It’s one of the first places I check if I’m going somewhere.”

Call for Eurostar to face competition as Channel Tunnel turns 30

Mark Smith, founder of international train travel website Seat61.com, said introducing a rival operator could lead to lower fares.

travel websites uk

An international rail travel expert has called for Eurostar to face direct competition, as the Channel Tunnel turns 30 years old on Monday.

Mark Smith, founder of international train travel website Seat61.com, said having a second company operating passenger train services to the continent could lead to lower fares and new destinations.

Eurostar holds a monopoly in running passenger services through the tunnel, which was officially opened on May 6 1994 by Queen Elizabeth II and France’s then-president Francois Mitterrand.

But Mr Smith said there are “people waiting in the wings to compete”.

Spanish start-up company Evolyn is aiming to launch services through the tunnel next year, while billionaire entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson is reportedly also developing a rival operation.

Mr Smith said: “I love Eurostar’s service but competition keeps everyone on their toes and it certainly keeps prices down.

“That I think is the important thing at the moment.

“Prices have risen recently because of the extra Brexit checks limiting capacity at St Pancras.

“We know that competition will keep a lid on those prices.

Transport – Opening of the Channel Tunnel – Calais

“We might see some extra destinations. The obvious one is Germany. A direct train to Cologne would be wonderful if they could find the space to put terminal facilities there.”

Eurostar’s routes to and from the UK are limited to between London St Pancras and Paris, Brussels, Lille, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.

Mr Smith said Eurostar is only running services to these “core destinations” as the EU’s new Entry-Exit System is expected to cause delays at border checks.

His first Eurostar experience was on a test train before public services began in November 1994, which he was invited on due to his role managing several major domestic stations in London.

“I was one of the lucky guinea pigs,” he recalled.

“I can remember the first time I did it, travelling through Beckenham Junction and Penge East with a French-accented announcer and champagne being served.

“It was quite a surreal experience.”

The Channel Tunnel remains the world’s longest subsea rail tunnel at 31 miles.

Construction work began in December 1987, with 11 huge boring machines cutting through eight million cubic metres of chalk marl to create the tunnel.

In addition to Eurostar services, vehicle-carrying shuttle trains between Folkestone and Calais are run by Eurotunnel, which is part of Channel Tunnel owner Getlink.

Some 101 million vehicles have travelled on these services.

The Queen and Mr Mitterrand officially opened the tunnel 30 years ago by travelling in a Eurotunnel train to Folkestone.

Peter Woodman, who reported on the event for the PA news agency, said the tunnel was “considered a tremendous feat of engineering”.

He went on: “As far as the story was concerned, it was about the twinning of England and France.

“It wasn’t just our triumph. It was a European thing.”

He recalled speculation about whether the privately-funded project would be completed due to rising costs.

“There had been tremendous financial problems,” he said. “The cost kept rocketing.

“I think in the end, the £5 billion that it was going to cost doubled to £10 billion.

“It doesn’t sound so much now but it was quite a lot of money in those days.

“There were all sorts of scare stories that the project was going to collapse and financially it wasn’t going to be a great investment.

“Some people thought it wouldn’t actually be finished.

“But there was tremendous political will on both sides of the Channel.

“This was what finally got the thing built.”

Politics – Channel Tunnel Agreement – Canterbury Cathedral – 1986

Eurotunnel infrastructure director Dan Hughes has worked for the company in various roles throughout the tunnel’s existence.

Thirty years ago, he was responsible for attempting to keep the media in a specified position on a platform at Folkestone when the heads of state arrived.

He recalled how photographers ignored his instructions in an attempt to “get the best shot”, adding: “It was chaos, but a fun memory.”

Mr Hughes, who became a crew member when commercial services began, said many passengers had “anxieties” about travelling under the Channel before their first journey.

“People at the time expected to look out the window and see a fish,” he said.

“That was kind of the feeling, it was the unknown.”

He added: “Everything was all fresh, brand new and shiny.
