THE STORY Trek has become an icon of American cycling with countless road and mountain bike victories. One area of racing where Trek has not routinely stepped atop the podium is cyclocross. The Trek X02 aims to change that. The XO bikes have been in Trek’s line since 2000, but were mainly used by members of the Trek/VW for off-season training. With the increase popularity of cyclocross, Trek has refocused their efforts on the XO line and looks to make a name for itself in the cyclocross scene.

The X02 is Trek’s top of the line cross bike. The frame is oversized aluminum mated to a Bontrager Satellite Plus carbon fork. A Bontrager Race Lite CX 46/38 Crankset breaks up what would be a complete SRAM Rival drivetrain, while a set of Avid Shorty 4 cantilever brakes handles the stopping duties. Bontrager supplies the remainder of the components with a Race X Lite stem. Race Lite VR, handlebars, a Race X Lite ACC carbon seatpost Race X Lite wheels and Jones CXR, 700x34c tires. A Bontrager RL saddle rounds out the package. The red and white paint scheme give the appearance of a race ready machine, while the white spoke, red nippled Race X Lite wheels, white accented stem, saddle and bar tape add to the clean pro-bike appearance.

THE FRAME The XO2 uses Trek’s Alpha Black aluminum frame. The frame is designed to be light and fast. To this end, each tube has been butted or shaped with the purpose of adding stiffness, or reducing weight. The frame does away with any fancy CNC machining or crazy tube profiles. Looking at the XO2 one gets the impression that the bike is a straightforward, back-to-basics race machine. The frame has a slightly sloping top tube design that features down and top tubes that use bi-axial profiles to stiffen the bottom bracket and front triangle. Combined with the 1-1/8-inch externally butted headtube, the XO2 stays goes in the intended direction. The chainstays use a conventional tube shape, and combined with a lack of gussets at the bottom bracket create a tremendous amount of rear tire clearance.

THE PARTS Trek did an impressive job when choosing parts for the XO2. The XO2 comes equipped with a SRAM Rival drivetrain with a 12-28-cog set. The SRAM Rival Shifters and derailleurs worked well, as we have come to expect, while the new carbon shift levers are a nice upgrade. The Avid Shorty 4 cantilever brakes offer good modulation and stopping power. The Bontrager Race X Lite wheels are smooth and reasonably light at 1490-grams. The Bontrager stem and bars work well and add to the high-end feel of the bike. The Bontrager carbon seatpost is a welcome addition due to its low weight and shock absorbing properties. The Bontrager RL saddle was comfortable and held up well throughout the test. The Bontrager Jones CXR tires provide good traction in dry conditions and showed little wear.

THE NUMBERS The 56-centimeter XO2 came with a 72.3-degree head tube and a 73.6-degree seat tube angle, connected by a 55.8-centimeter top tube. Chainstay length and bottom bracket height were both cyclocross standards at 43-centimeters for the chainstays and 27.6-centimeters for the bottom bracket. The wheelbase measured out to a race standard of 102.3-centimeters. The Trek XO2 weighs 18.4-pounds.

THE RIDE The Trek XO2 is a capable race bike. The frame is laterally stiff, with spot on geometry that inspires confidence on rough twisty courses. Out of the saddle sprints are done without a hint of flex from the bottom bracket. Despite the stiff bottom bracket the XO2 is quite comfortable and absorbs a great deal of trail shock. We attribute a lot of the XO2’s comfort to the Bontrager ACC carbon seatpost and the frames slightly sloping stop tube design. The XO2 cornered and descended well and rarely went off track. The Bontrager Race X Lite wheels are a perfect addition to the bike. They are reasonably light, laterally stiff and accelerate well out of corners.

We liked the slightly sloping top tube design of the frame as it added stand over height, increased stiffness and aided in comfort. However, we would have liked to see a flatter tube profile on the bottom of the top tube to make running with the bike more comfortable. While SRAM components and Avid brakes worked well, several test riders had a problem with the rear Avid brakes hitting their claves during out of saddle efforts. A lower profile brake would help solve this, but the sloping top tube design also plays a role by decreasing the angle and lowering the seatstays. The Bontrager Jones CXR tires worked well in sand and on hard packed surfaces but clogged up with mud easily and seemed a bit slick in wet conditions.

THE VERDICT The Trek XO2 is a winner with solid handling, great components and exceptional mud clearance. While not the first name in cyclocross, it is clear that Trek did their homework when developing the XO2. Expect to see a lot more Trek XO2s on the podium in 2009.

Shipping information:

I ship UPS Ground and the bike is disassembled. I do have a video to help in putting back together.  Usually, it’s the Bars, Front Wheel, Pedals, and Seatpost that need to be put back on. I try to keep it simple. It will be packed very well, but if you see any damage to the box or bike keep the box and packing material plus, take pictures. I do insure all bikes that are shipped and require a signature. In addition, if shipped out of Colorado, there is no Sales Tax.

Frame warrenty, treks back up and interest.They make some half decent gear i feel.

Hanger is like chocolate and does not work well with a 27tooth.It bends with major vibration.Rear stays have too much clearance(how much mud can you carry on your bike before the brakes stop working?)The width of the rear stays causes it to catch my legs when riding over the back of the saddle, its just annoying.Strange frame line took some working out to get Q factor right, back wheel does not run straight when in right place??? The gear shift has never been good because of the hanger and that its quite short, currently been fixed by making my own ti one.Did anyone really ride the stock set up in competition on the team as i cant think the hanger would have made it more than the first few kms???

Very ridgid, seems strong.Not too heavy and pretty neutral at any speed. Quite short, but i like it that way.

Light & capable cyclo-crosser

With a light aluminium frame, robust gear and great attention to detail, the Trek XO2 is a super-capable cyclo-crosser.

• Frame and fork: Fantastic finish and detailing, fixings for mudguards front and rear, with a well-matched carbon bladed fork
• Ride & handling: Light and responsive but solid and direct enough for precise off road use
• Equipment: SRAM Rival is well suited to off-road use and has novelty value as well. Tasty finishing kit
• Wheels: Flashy white painted spokes might be just for show but these light, stiff Bontrager wheels are sparkly performers too

“That’s a nice light bike!” says BikeRadar spannerman George carrying the box containing the Trek into the workshop. And at 8.39kg for a 58cm aluminium cyclo-cross bike he’s right.

The impression once it’s out of the box is even more striking. Shocking pearlescent red frame with white decals, cables, bar tape, stem and saddle match the paired white spokes and red anodised spoke nipples of the Bontrager wheels. The red brake lever hoods don’t quite match – but full marks for effort nonetheless.

Well protected for ’cross rough & tumble

A closer inspection doesn’t disappoint, as the attention to detail is far from just cosmetic.

Trek wants your bike to stay looking good, so has fitted frame protection measures everywhere. A plastic collar sits at the bottom of the seat tube to stop the chain unshipping onto that lovely paintwork on the bottom bracket; rubber protectors are fitted to stop the long cable runs along the top tube from marking the frame; and there’s even a rubber gaiter to prevent water and grime from running into the section of cable outer between seat stay and rear mech.

Inline gear cable adjusters within easy reach of the bars are a welcome detail too, and in terms of finish, the welding is by a long way the best of the aluminium bikes in this group.

The Trek is also the lightest of the aluminium bikes we tested with it – and is priced accordingly – but it still keeps an eye on versatility with its mudguard eyelets at the rear dropouts and forks.

There’s loads of clearance for mud-caked wheels in the fork and in the chunky Y-shaped seatstays. That means plenty of options for tyre widths for both on and off road.

Big S-shaped chainstays – the tubing asymmetrically flattened on one side to accommodate the chainrings – mean mud won’t collect behind the bottom bracket either. It’s also good to see there is no chainstay crossbrace– which means one less place mud can build up.

Details add up to great performance

The best thing about all this attention to detail is that it works beautifully. All that white kit is soon covered in mud, and you might get the odd chip on those painted white spokes, but the bike’s performance still shines through.

The frame is stiff and efficient, and its light weight combines with the stiff, light Bontrager wheels to make for an exciting and nimble ride. Within minutes of getting on the Trek we are confidently throwing it into corners and through leafy singletrack.

The Avid Shorty 4 cantilever brakes are strong and dependable, though as with the brakes on most cyclo-cross bikes, you really need to use them from the drops to get the most modulation and power from the ends of the levers. Once you do though, all you need is one or two fingers on the lever.

The carbon bladed fork gives the right balance of positive feedback and control, without either being too flexible to handle big braking efforts and long fast descents or too stiff to allow for tight, slow twisty cornering.

The Trek is unusual for its use of the ‘third groupset’, SRAM Rival. If Campag devotees can tear themselves away from their two-lever finger and thumb operated system, they may soon warm to the positive clunky action of this 10 speed groupset – which is welcome in the rough and tumble of cyclocross.

Shimano fans will like the fact that both up and down changes are incorporated into one lever, with almost the same action as they’re used to with two separate levers – though that might not stop them trying to shift to easier gears with an immovable brake lever at first.

Carvana trends report: used evs narrow price gap with ice cars, triggering sales growth potential.

Used vehicle online marketplace Carvana has posted a Q1 EV trends report outlining some encouraging metrics for electrification. According to the data gathered, Carvana saw that its used EV sales mix achieved new highs while the price margin compared to traditional combustion vehicles narrowed.

Carvana ($CVNA) is a Fortune 500 company that has introduced unique ways of revolutionizing the automotive retail segment. In addition to car vending machines, Carvana facilitates vehicle trade-ins, financing, and used car sales in over 300 markets around the US, with the option for local pickup or home delivery of your used vehicle (hopefully an EV).

With such a large footprint throughout the US, offering tens of thousands of vehicles to customers at a time, Carvana has gathered some granular used EV sales data and compiled it into a Q1 2024 report.

The EV trends report combines Carvana’s EV sales data by state plus other metrics from Kelly Blue Book and MarketCheck. The result is a detailed Carvana report that shows used EV sales are not only on the rise but hold plenty of untapped potential for future sales growth.

Carvana saw used EV sales grow as average prices drop

The most significant metric we want to point out from Carvana’s Q1 EV trends report is the increase of all-electric models in its sales mix. As more and more new BEV models hit the US market, the number of used versions has seen a significant increase.

With more options available, Carvana has seen the average sale price of BEVs decrease, dropping from $37,000 in Q1 2023 to $31,000 a year later. The average EV sale price difference compared to ICE is also down year-over-year, from +$13,000 in Q1 2023 to +$7,000.

Used EV sales also hit an all-time high for Carvana in Q1 2024, contributing 4.3% of its total. That’s still a relatively small number, but Carvana believes used EV sales are poised for significant growth going forward. Per Carvana founder and CEO Ernie Garcia:

The significant, multi-year growth in new EV sales is a leading indicator of the potential of the used EV market. As a larger selection of EVs makes its way into the used fleet, prices normalize, and tax credits become available, more used car buyers will have the opportunity to access the EV category. Carvana has always sought to build an inventory that matches the tastes and preferences of our customers. While we maintain a diverse selection across all fuel types, we are proud to now offer more than 50 different models of EVs at a wide range of price points.

As you can see from Carvana’s graphic above, BEV sales have demonstrated encouraging growth in the US in Q1 2024. Florida joined the 4%+ threshold, as 5.2% of Carvana’s sales in The Sunshine State were BEV.

Meanwhile, some states that have been slower to EV adoption delivered record year-over-year growth, including Minnesota (+386%), Arkansas (+383%), and Kentucky (+263%).

Last but not least, Carvana points out that Federal tax credits for used EVs (up to $4,000) have been a contributing factor in improving affordability and thus, increased sales. Of the 50+ EV models Carvana currently sells in the US, 24% met all criteria to become eligible for the Federal Used Clean Vehicle Credit in Q1 2024.

Of those qualifying vehicles, Carvana points out the Nissan LEAF was the top seller, followed by the Tesla Model 3 , and Chevy Volt (PHEV). The ill-fated BMW i3 and Volkswagen e-Golf round out the top five.
