RIO CHAMA WILD AND SCENIC RIVER

The Rio Chama, a major tributary of the Rio Grande, flows through a multi-colored sandstone canyon whose walls increase to 1,500 feet above the river as you travel downstream. Co-managed by BLM and the Forest Service (FS), 24.6 miles of the river is Congressionally designated as a Wild and Scenic River and flows through the Rio Chama Wilderness Study Area managed by the BLM, and the Chama River Canyon Wilderness managed by the U.S. Forest Service.    Towering cliffs, heavily wooded side canyons, and historical sites offer an outstanding wild river backdrop for the angler or boater. To protect the river environment from overuse, and to maintain an opportunity for a high quality experience, boating is limited to set number of boaters per day. There is a lottery system to assign launch dates.

Find out more about other wild and scenic rivers on the National Conservation Lands page or on the Wild and Scenic Rivers program page .

Activities  Boating, camping, fishing, hiking/backpacking, wildlife viewing.

Fishing is especially good on the upper mile of this river segment. Car camping is popular on the lower 8 miles, and float boaters enjoy two- or three-day trips on Class II rapids on the entire 31-mile segment (advance permits required), or half-day trips on the lower segment (no advance permits required).

Facilities  Restrooms and drinking water are located at El Vado Ranch.

There are no facilities on the river itself. Solid human waste must be carried out in a washable re-usable container, no plastic bags allowed. River toilets that meet requirements are available at river equipment outlets. ECO Safe, River Bank Toilet, Coleman or Jon-ny Partner brands may be purchased at: nrs.com or cascadeoutfitters.com. Liquid (kitchen) waste should be strained into the river.

Location & Access El Vado Ranch is reached via NM 112 from US 84 near Tierra Amarilla. Forest Road 151 just north of Ghost Ranch on US 84 reaches the lower part of the river. Forest Road 151 is a dirt road and not easily accessible when wet.

Latitude Adjustment

Beloved for its scenic narrow-gauge railway, Chama makes for an idyllic, high-altitude summer-weekend retreat.

IF YOU EVER FIND YOURSELF EXPLAINING New Mexico’s tremendous geographical diversity to a skeptical outsider who imagines the state as one vast, cactus-studded desert landscape straight out of a Road Runner cartoon, recommend a trip to Chama. This friendly little railroad hub lies at an elevation of 7,800 feet, in a high valley surrounded by wildflower meadows and craggy mountains forested with aspen and ponderosa-pine groves. Less than 10 miles from the Colorado state line, Chama offers visitors a cool taste of Rocky Mountain ruggedness.

The town is home to the nation’s highest scenic narrow-gauge steam railroad, the Cumbres & Toltec. From late May through mid-October, the railroad offers daily excursions north through the Chama Valley, and up over the 10,022-foot Cumbres Pass. It’s the region’s most well-known attraction, a hit with kids and adults. But even if a scenic rail excursion isn’t the path to your heart, picturesque Chama has a pleasing mix of relaxing diversions, including the opportunity to read a book beside—or cast a line into—the roaring mountain river for which the town is named.

WHERE TO STAY Chama has a handful of lodging options; a couple of the best are in the village heart, steps from the Cumbres & Toltec railroad depot. The Parlor Car B&B occupies a striking Victorian with a steep hipped roof, period antiques, and three guest rooms named for railroad luminaries of the Old West—William J. Palmer, Fred Harvey, and George Pullman. Just up the street is Chama Station Inn, a 1926 adobe that contains nine cheerfully furnished, reasonably priced rooms that open to a sunny, fragrant garden.

A little off the beaten path, Corkins Lodge can rightly claim one of the most dramatic and enticing settings of any accommodation in the state. It’s surrounded by acres of lush wilderness at the end of N.M. 512 (a 30-minute drive from Chama proper), beneath a wall of 2,500-foot cliffs in the densely forested Brazos Mountains. Guests can choose from among 11 rustic but warmly outfitted cabins, some dating to the 1930s and others built more recently. Most sleep four to six guests, making them ideal for families and friends traveling together. On-site activities include trout fishing, hiking, and swimming in a heated pool.

FRIDAY You can reach Chama most easily via U.S. 285/84. From Albuquerque, take I-25 to Santa Fe, and pick up U.S. 285/84 at exit 282. The route jogs north-northwest, passing through the cottonwood-laced Española Valley, and up through the brilliant red-rock canyons of Abiquiú and Ghost Ranch. From Santa Fe, it’s a two-hour drive without stops. However, you could easily break up the trip with a light lunch at Bode’s General Store in Abiquiú (try the red-chile cheese fries) or a hike at Ghost Ranch Retreat Center, amid the very buttes and mesas that Georgia O’Keeffe captured on canvas. Try to arrive in Chama no later than 7 p.m., as restaurants in these parts close early. A good bet for a tasty dinner your first evening is the bustling Boxcar Café, set in a historic building known for its green-chile enchiladas and green-chile cheeseburgers.

SATURDAY It may sound a little counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to “see” Chama is to leave Chama. The town’s most famous tourist draw is the Cumbres & Toltec Railroad, whose formidable steam locomotives chug for some 64 miles along a serpentine track through the San Juan Mountains. If you have kids in tow, opt for the playful Cinder Bear Experience, a two-hour ride led by a costumed, ursine conductor that includes storytelling, sing-alongs, and games. The classic all-ages rides last as much as a full day and include lunch. Fun theme trains are scheduled throughout the summer, including weekly sunset dinner rides and a Moonlight & Wine Tasting train on July 12.

Before or after riding the rails, spend some time exploring the short but animated stretch of Terrace Avenue lined with souvenir shops and galleries, many of them installed inside erstwhile brothels and saloons that date to the town’s late-19th-century commercial railroad heyday. The town and surrounding valley is also a mecca for outdoor recreation. The Chama Valley Chamber of Commerce can direct you to several local outfitters that offer hunting- and fishing-guide services. If you have your own gear, consider casting a rod in the Río Chama or in the reservoirs at nearby Heron Lake State Park (20 miles southwest) and El Vado Lake State Park (a few miles southwest of Heron Lake), both of which are rife with trout and kokanee salmon.

Arguably Chama’s most celebrated eatery, the timber-faced High Country Restaurant and Saloon is an atmospheric dinner option. The menu focuses on stick-to-your-ribs Southwestern and Western classics like 20-ounce porterhouse steaks, pan-fried cornmeal-crusted trout, and carne adovada. The walls of the dining room are hung with works by Chama artists.

SUNDAY For a quick breakfast, try Fina’s Diner, an endearingly modest family-operated spot festooned with vintage Coca-Cola signs and photos of local high-school sports teams. It’s a good bet for biscuits and gravy, and eggs with chicken-fried steak. Also keep in mind that High Country Restaurant serves a popular breakfast buffet on Sunday mornings, featuring made-to-order omelets and waffles.

Some of the Chama Valley’s most interesting sites lie south of town, including the tiny village of Los Ojos, reached by taking N.M. 514, just off U.S. 84 about 10 miles south of Chama. Around the corner from the village’s handsomely restored San Jose Church, which boasts a corrugated metal roof and adobe belfry, you’ll find the renowned weaving collective Tierra Wools, whose talented artisans produce stunningly handcrafted rugs, blankets, felted hats, and other textiles. In a room off the gallery showroom, you can sometimes watch weavers skirting and scouring the wool from Churro sheep raised at nearby Shepherd’s Lamb ranch. Or you might catch a peek of them dyeing the yarn in huge pots, and warping and weaving the colorful materials on intricate looms.

From Los Ojos, it’s easy to make your way home, returning on U.S. 84. If you have some time to spare, you can cut east from Tierra Amarilla (just south of Los Ojos) on U.S. 64, which climbs dramatically over the Brazos Mountains for 50 miles to Tres Piedras, where you can pick up U.S. 285 south to Santa Fe (1½ hours). Or you can continue east from Tres Piedras on U.S. 64 another 32 miles to Taos. The drive from Chama to Santa Fe via Taos takes about 3½ to 4 hours without stops. ✜

The Rio Chama is 120 miles long, making it the third largest tributary of the Rio Grande. Beginning in the southern San Juan Mountains of south-central Colorado, it joins the Rio Grande near Espanola, New Mexico. In 1978, Congress recognized the canyons as a special place of beauty and ecological importance by designating the river as a State Scenic and Pastoral River and portions of the Santa Fe National Forest as the Chama Canyons Wilderness Area. Thirty-one miles of the river were protected as a Federal Wild and Scenic River in 1988. The Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) primary objective is to ensure that wilderness resources and experience are protected.

The 22 miles of the river from Cooper’s El Vado Ranch to Chavez Canyon flows through a BLM Wilderness Study Area and the designated Chama Canyons Wilderness Area. This ‘wilderness section’ contains Class II-III rapids. A Permit through recreation.gov is required between El Vado Ranch and Chavez Canyon from April 15 to September 15. Between September 16 and April 14, boaters must self permit on-site prior to launching. All private launches outside of the permit season are required to follow all regulations.

Rio Chama flows are not guaranteed and are highly variable - based on water availability, irrigation demand, and precipitation - and may change with little notice. Please read the Cancellation Policy. Early season (April 15 to July 15) flows often coincide with inflow to reservoirs above El Vado Dam, but may be adjusted due to water storage operations. Release season (July 16 to September 15) flows are augmented for weekends (Friday to Sunday) for boater needs. Check flows: USGS flow information (Rio Chama below El Vado).

A lottery system is used for Friday and Saturday launches. Permits for all other days are available on Recreation.gov first-come, first-served beginning April 1, at 8 AM .

On the Rio Chama Wilderness section, because of release schedules, the term 'Weekend' is used for Friday and Saturday launches. Sunday through Thursday launches are termed 'Weekday' . Water is released from El Vado Reservoir between 10:00 am and Noon on Friday and reduced between 10:00 am and Noon on Sunday. The water takes about 12 hours to either reach, or recede at, Chavez Canyon access site.

Downstream from the Chavez Canyon access, nine miles of additional class II-III rapids flows along Forest Road 151 to Big Eddy access. This ‘Day’ section is popular for day trips and has car camping opportunities. A permit is not required between the Chavez and Big Eddy boat ramps.

If you are in a canoe or kayak, you can have a good run from El Vado to Chavez Canyon at flows as low as 200 cfs or to Big Eddy, at flows of 300 cfs. For small rafts, minimum recommended flows are 300 to 400 cfs. For large rafts (14’ or bigger) minimum flows of 500 cfs are recommended. Extremely low flow (ELF) runs are possible. Please call for more information about ELF trips.

Permit & Season Information

All launches must be permitted. Permits between April 15 and September 15 are only available through Recreation.gov, and are not transferrable.

Please note the No Show and Cancellation Policy.

Maximum group size is 16 people.

Permit holder must be 18 years old.

The Rio Chama has two Lottery permit seasons:

The Early Season (April 15 to July 15) weekday flows typically reflect upstream reservoir inflow and weekends are augmented.

The Release Season (July 16 to Sept 15) weekday flows may be minimal and weekend flows are augmented.

The lottery application window for Friday and Saturday launches is open from December 1 to January 31 .

Individuals may obtain one permit per season.

Unclaimed Friday and weekdays will become available at 8:00 am. on April 1, 2024 on this site.

After April 1, canceled permits will be available on Recreation.gov within 24 hours of cancellation.

Friday permits may launch either Friday or Saturday.

All other permits must launch on their scheduled day.

Need to Know

River Flow and Water Levels

  • Flows are not guaranteed but are generally augmented Friday through Sunday during the release season dependant on water storage and downstream user needs. As a result, flows can and do change without notice .
  • For the 2024 Release season, weekend releases of 500 cfs are projected to begin on Fridays between 10am and noon. Releases end on Sunday between 10am and noon. The water takes about 12 hours to either reach, or recede, at Chavez Canyon access site.
  • River Flow Levels links are available in the links section or contact BLM for current information.
  •  The Rio Chama requires class III skills to navigate these rapids safely.

Flow requirements:

Below 200 cfs are very low flow conditions. No Show policies still apply . For kayaks (inflatable or hard shell), canoes, and rafts less than 12', at least 200 cfs is recommended. For rafts over 12' in length, a minimum of 500 cfs is recommended.

This Jewel of the desert meanders through spectacular southwestern landscapes and serene wilderness as she courses her way south to join her sister the  Rio Grande . The Rio Chama is run in either  full day  (approx 5 hrs) or  multi-day  formats- 2 day or 3 day . Full day trips run the river as it comes out of the wilderness section of the canyon and passes into a basin filled with grand, wide open vistas and mild  class II rapids . Multi-day trips start up near the town of Chama, NM and float through 33 miles of heavily forested river canyon with stunning soaring sandstone walls highlighted in the pastels of desert color. Multi-day float trips are  our guides’  favorites and the reason we started outfitting in the first place. Taking a few days to explore this river canyon is truly worth the time and an excellent family experience that you will remember for a lifetime.
