Is Tokyo's Hop-on Hop-off Sightseeing Bus Worth It?
We’ll make this quick: Is it worth it? Yes. If you’ve got limited time to spend in Tokyo, the Sky Hop-on Hop-off Open-top Bus is a thrilling way to see the top spots quickly and without wearing out your legs.
But if you’re looking for a detailed review — including what course to choose and spots to get off at — you’re in the right place. We’ve got a treasure trove of Cheapo tips.
How the Tokyo Sky Hop-on Hop-off Bus works
The Sky Hop-on Hop-off Sightseeing Bus is a double-decker, open-top bus that allows you to get on and off at major tourist sites around Tokyo. Once you’ve purchased a bus pass, you’ll receive a QR code which the bus attendant will scan as you enter and exit the bus. Depending on how you buy the pass, you may have to exchange your voucher for a ticket, but this can be done at any bus stop on any route. There’s no need to go to the beginning of the route to start.
To search for your closest bus stop to where you are staying, check out Sky Bus’s digital map . It also includes times and how busy the buses are. Once boarded, you’ll receive a paper map and timetable along with earbuds — you can also bring your own headphones — for the digital audio commentary. Languages include Japanese, English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French, and German.
Where can I buy the pass?
The one-day pass costs ¥ 4,500 and the two-day pass costs ¥ 6,500 . You can buy tickets easily from Headout or Klook ; on the Sky Hop Bus website; or on the bus on the day.
Note: Even if you enter a specific day, unused tickets are valid for up to three months from the purchasing date.
Which course should you choose?
There are three different bus routes to take advantage of and all are accessible with just one pass. They come in the primary colors red, green, and blue, and while all three are doable in a day, if you plan to get off and on (as Sky Hop Bus intends) then you may only end up riding one or two.
All courses begin and end in front of the Mitsubishi Building near Tokyo Station , so its stand-out redbrick building is a landmark you’ll see no matter which routes you choose.
Green Course: Skyscrapers and city sights
Course length: Just under 2 hours Highlights: Shinjuku, Shibuya Scramble Crossing, and Tokyo Tower Recommended stops: Tokyo Tower and Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden
If you’re a fan of the hustle and bustle of the city and want to see the iconic skyscrapers of western Tokyo, then the Green Course is the only way to go.
You’ll set off from Mitsubishi Building and head directly towards Shinjuku; here you can get off at stops for Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden , Shinjuku Southern Terrace , and West Shinjuku. On the way, look out for the entrance to Kabukicho , known for its Godzilla and nightlife; the Mode Gakuen Cocoon Tower, which looks more like a silver bullet than a cocoon; and the Tokyo Metropolitan Building , a Cheapo must-see.
Tip: As buses are infrequent on this route (every 2–3 hours), consider making your own way to/from Shinjuku and exploring the area before or after your desired course. We got on at the West Shinjuku stop and rode until the end.
Next up is Shibuya with a stop just before the famous Shibuya Scramble Crossing . The journey from Shinjuku will take you briefly past Yoyogi Park, Harajuku, and Omotesandō , although you won’t be able to see much except for the Yoyogi National Stadium . Once in Shibuya, you’ll spot — and hopefully not run over — pedestrians dashing over the busy crosswalk outside Shibuya Station. You’ll also hear the tale of Hachikō — a dog immortalized in a statue nearby.
Finished with the west side of Tokyo, the bus will make its way back towards Tokyo Station, but not before taking a break at one of the most iconic sights of the city: Tokyo Tower. (It only stops here twice a day, so make sure to check the timetable.) You can get off here and stroll through nearby Shiba Park before making your way up the tower — by stairs if you want a challenge. Get tickets for the observatory here . This is also a good opportunity to connect to the Blue Course as the timings line up nicely.
Red Course: Temples, tradition, and Tokyo Skytree
Course length: 1 hour 30 minutes Highlights: Tokyo Skytree, Sumida River, and the Kaminarimon Gate Recommended stops: Tokyo Skytree, Asakusa, and Ueno Station
The Red Course has the most stops of the three bus lines and comes the most frequently — around every hour. It also has major tourist destinations on its route with stops for Tokyo Skytree , Asakusa , Ueno , and Akihabara . Provided you start early, you can have a lot of fun hopping on and off this line.
Firstly, you’ll head towards Ryōgoku, the town known for its sumo wrestlers . If you’re lucky, you may spot one or two walking the streets here. Not long after, you’ll get to see the tallest building in Japan and the tallest tower in the world: Tokyo Skytree . Get tickets here .
If you stay on, then it’s over the bridge — notice the frothing beer and golden poop buildings to your left — as you proceed to Asakusa. Disembark for a stroll down Nakamise Street and around Sensōji Temple . You won’t be able to see the temple from the bus, only the Kaminarimon Gate and waving rickshaw drivers, so it’s worth getting off here for a closer look.
After getting your fix of old-school Tokyo, you’ll arrive at Ueno Station. Alight here for the local museums , Ueno Park , and Ameyoko Shopping Street . Honestly, there’s not much to see from the roof of the bus in the Ueno area but things get more exciting as you approach Akihabara, an electronics and sub-culture hub . See smiling anime girls greet you from the sky-high building’s fronts and watch the nerds of the city do their shopping rounds. Lastly, the route swings by the historic Nihonbashi Bridge on the way back to the Marunouchi area.
Blue Course: Night views, Rainbow Bridge, and Tokyo Tower
Course length: 1 hour 16 minutes Highlights: Rainbow Bridge, Tokyo Tower, and night view Recommended stops: Tokyo Tower and Tokyo Teleport Station
Cheapos are suckers for city lights at night — they’re free to view, after all — and the Blue Course delivers some of the best in Tokyo. As the only route that runs when the sun goes down, you’ll get to see Tokyo shine the brightest. Although just as enjoyable in the daytime, we recommend taking it at the end of the day.
Depending on the time of year, it will either be dark by the time it starts or the sun will just be setting. Heading through Marunouchi, you’ll pass by plenty of government buildings before arriving at Tokyo Tower, which turns its lights on at dusk.
Now on to the most unique experience of all: driving over the Rainbow Bridge. This bridge connects mainland Tokyo to the manmade island of Odaiba . An open-top bus is one of the only ways to experience an unobstructed view while crossing over the bay as visitors are unlikely to have a car. You can cross the bridge on foot , as well as via the Yurikamome Line, but both won’t offer you a vista like this. It’ll be extremely windy, so hold on to your hats… and phones.
Once you’ve made it over to Odaiba, there will be a stop for Tokyo Teleport Station. If you’d like to grab some lunch or dinner at one of the department stores along Odaiba Seaside Park , the restaurants there offer a beautiful view of Tokyo’s skyline and a glowing Rainbow Bridge.
You can also skip dinner and cross back over the Rainbow Bridge on the bus. This direction is even more impressive as it offers a full-frontal view of Tokyo Tower. Before finishing your day at Tokyo Station, you’ll go through Ginza and experience the glittering lights of the fanciest neighborhood in Tokyo. Here you can see the Hattori Clock Tower above the Wako Department Store, which survived the bombings of WW2; the Shinkansen overpass, where you can see bullet trains coming in and out of Tokyo Station; and Kabuki-za, the famous Kabuki theater.
Conclusion: Is the Tokyo Sky Hop-on Hop-off Bus worth it?
The bus is a perfect way to give you a sample of what Tokyo has to offer. If you use it on your first day in the city, you can get a sense of what’s worth a visit and what isn’t. It’s also comforting for those who have mobility difficulties — a peaceful alternative to rushing about one of the largest cities in the world.
Tip: If you are strapped for time and can only pick one or two routes, then we’d avoid the Green Course unless you have a lot of time or desire to see Shibuya or Shinjuku.
Tokyo Sky Hop-on Hop-off Bus FAQs
How often does the tokyo sky hop-on hop-off bus go.
Some routes (like the Red and Blue) go more often than others (Green), but even then, you could be waiting for around an hour or so for the bus to pick you up again. Though times do change depending on the season. To avoid heartache, keep the timetable handy and consider only getting off at your must-see spots. Also, start early. Buses go from around 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (until 7:20 p.m. on the Blue Course).
Do I have to get off the bus?
You don’t need to get off the bus. In fact, we recommend only getting off if you’re going to spend more than an hour in one area as the bus will not come back around again that often. Key stops to transfer to other courses are Tokyo Tower (Blue and Green) and Mitsubishi Building (all three).
Can I do all courses in one day?
If you are strategic and get up early, it is possible, but you may only be able to get off once or twice.
What is the difference between the Tokyo Sky Bus and Sky Hop Bus?
Sky Hop Bus also operates another sightseeing bus that you can’t hop on and off of. It is called Sky Bus Tokyo and includes a tour guide (Japanese only). Sky Bus also departs from outside the Mitsubishi Building and will have the blue label “Sky Bus Tokyo” on the front.
What happens if it rains?
The bus will still operate in light rain and you will be provided with ponchos. Some buses also come with a rain cover attached. However, the bus may be suspended in heavy rain and stormy weather.
What types of seats and buses are there?
Buses will have a small roof at the front for those who need shade, and on some of the newer buses, these seats even have air-conditioning (a blessing for Japan’s summers ).
What if the bus is full?
Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait for the next one as you are not allowed to stand on the bus. You can check the status of buses on the map mentioned before. This is one of the benefits of getting on at the Mitsubishi Building (the first stop).
Which is better, the train or bus?
You may be wondering if it is worth catching a sightseeing bus when Tokyo’s train system is one of the best in the world. While it is not as cheap as the train can be, the bus can be a lot quicker — traffic permitting — and offers you views on the way. There are no transfers that will slow you down and you get to see major destinations without the fuss of getting off — just be ready with your camera.
Final tip: Bring a brush. You’re going to need it to untangle your windswept hair.
While we do our best to ensure it’s correct, information is subject to change.

Safe, reliable, and effortless bus tours
Choosing which spots to visit and preparing a schedule are the most energy- and time-consuming aspects of planning a trip. Bus tours take all that weight off your shoulders. Here we introduce four services convenient for sightseeing in Tokyo.
SKYBUS TOKYO operates red open-top double-decker vehicles, reminiscent of the iconic buses of London. Its tours are perfect for short trips around Tokyo, as almost all wrap up in around an hour.
HATO BUS is a long-established bus tour organizer that offers a variety of courses, from brief trips around Tokyo to full-day tours. Its "'O Sola mio" open-top double-decker buses offer an outstanding view of Tokyo Tower and the city's other skyscrapers.
O-Edo Bus specializes in day trips in and around Tokyo. The tours are conducted by interpreter-guides that have passed a strict national exam. They allude to current events, injecting a touch of humor. When there is time to spare, they may even give you a surprise look at spots not on the initial schedule.
Finally, Willer’s Tokyo Restaurant Bus is a unique opportunity to experience Tokyo while enjoying a high-class dinner on the move. Passengers can choose between a Japanese and a European style course meal as they visit iconic attractions in Tokyo and enjoy the luxurious ambiance of this unique tour bus.
The beauty of sightseeing bus tours is that they cover a large number of places with a minimal amount of walking. This is ideal for those who cannot—or do not wish to—spend much time exploring on foot, as well as anyone who wants to hear interesting information about the major sites. Some courses even include hotel buffets and stage performances. There are many ways to enjoy bus tours. Find the perfect one for you, and give it a try.

Hop Line on the Sky Hop Bus
English speaking tour guide from Roppongi to Shinjuku
Humidity broke. Typhoon gone. The skies are blue! How about cruising around Tokyo in a double-decker bus? With the top down, crisp air against your cheeks and the wind in your hair, a quick tour around the city with an English-speaking guide will get you as acclimated Tokyoites, but from a different angle. It’s an overview, especially if you’re still trying to decide on specific sightseeing spots or if you have just a little free time to spare. Hop on to Sky Bus Tokyo !
We started our tour from Roppongi Hills at Bus stop “A” (or “Pick up Point ‘A’”). Roppongi Hills is a large complex of restaurants, shopping, cinema, arts and special events. You can easily lose your sense of direction here, so follow the signs closely or refer to the Information desk for assistance. Upon arrival, a Hop Line staff member quickly greets you and offers a small step stool to assist you on your way to the second deck. The second level is the only section open for passenger seating so I imagine the top is placed back on if it rains.
From Roppongi Hills we studied the route map and decided to end our tour at Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo located in Shinjuku. This particular Hop Line actually starts from Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo named as “Bus Stop 1” and has three stops in between: Roppongi Hills (Bus Stop 2), NHK Studio Park in Shibuya (Bus Stop 3), Hotel Sunroute Plaza Shinjuku (Bus Stop 4). From Roppongi to Shinjuku, the entire ride was 1 hour total.
Other than having a bit of relaxation plus free Wi-fi time during the hour, there were a few highlights along the way. The ever-popular Scramble Crossing in Shibuya where you can also find the Statue of Hachiko. The Shibuya Starbucks with a killer view for a vast amount of people-watching, even after you finish your latte. The NHK Studio Park stop is at the Japan public television and radio broadcasting offices. It’s open to the public for a look behind the scenes. Although hidden behind the trees, Yoyogi Park is one of Tokyo’s largest parks. Before it became popular for outdoor activities, it was actually the site of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. And finally, the skyscrapers and shopping centers in Shinjuku are a sight to see. Make sure you bring the proper camera and lenses so you are to able to fit the gargantuan buildings in your shots. If you’re quick enough you’ll spot the LOVE sign at I-Land tower - one of my favorites to visit every season.

Experience a “360° Tokyo Panorama” on a Double-Decker Open Bus!
I often spot bright red open-air double-decker buses cruising the streets of Tokyo. I had always been curious about these buses, and finally, I went on a bus trip with my friend! Let us introduce you to this new style of sightseeing in Tokyo with a great view and a sense of liberation.
“SKY BUS” and “SKY HOP BUS”
Thrilling the sky bus “imperial palace, ginza, and marunouchi course”, highlights of the sky bus “imperial palace, ginza, marunouchi course, “sky hop bus” – perfect for those who want to enjoy tokyo sightseeing at their own pace.
There are two types of bright red double-decker buses. One is the “SKY BUS,” which offers guided tours of Tokyo’s sightseeing routes, and the other is the “SKY HOP BUS,” which allows passengers to hop on and off at any time and any place.
Purchasing tickets for both buses is very easy! You can buy tickets at the SKY BUS ticket counter on the first floor of the Mitsubishi Building in front of Tokyo Station or make a reservation online in advance for a smooth ride!
I, Marei, editor-in-chief, joined my friend Saki on a 50-minute bus tour that circles the Imperial Palace, the Diet Building, Ginza, and the Marunouchi area around Tokyo Station. If you want to experience central Tokyo in a short time, I recommend this course. Even if you’re not familiar with Tokyo’s geography, SKY BUS will guide you to the main Tokyo landmarks.
Seats are randomly assigned at the time of reservation, but all seats are on the second floor of the open bus, so no matter where you sit, you can enjoy a 360° city panorama. The Imperial Palace is surrounded by lush greenery, the breeze is pleasant, and it feels great!
The tour then passed by the Diet Building and the elegant British Embassy in Japan, and ended with a loop around Tokyo Station and Ginza before returning to the Mitsubishi Building in the Marunouchi area.
I, Marei, editor-in-chief, would like to share my personal highlights!
(1) Stunning Views!
I was impressed by how much the view of Tokyo changes when you raise your vantage point a few meters higher.
(2) Diverse Encounters!
It was so much fun to see people waving at us along the route.
(3) Thrilling Experience!
The bus passes under elevated rail tracks where double-decker buses can just barely fit. I couldn’t help but shout and scream as if on a rollercoaster.
If you want to explore Tokyo at your leisure, consider purchasing a same-day or 2-day ticket for the SKY HOP BUS; simply show the QR code to the bus staff and hop on and off anytime, anywhere.
Currently, there are three bus routes (Red, Blue, and Green), with each bus covering Shibuya, Odaiba, Asakusa/Tokyo Skytree, and Akihabara. The buses offer free Wi-Fi and have English-speaking staff on board. Furthermore, you can listen to guides about nearby attractions in multiple languages using earphones.
Normally, the bus is open-top, but it may operate with a glass roof during inclement weather, summer, winter, or other seasonal reasons.
Which style of bus sightseeing do you prefer? When in Tokyo, enjoy the “360° view of Tokyo” from the elevated red open-air buses!

Looking for a one-of-a-kind afternoon tea experience in Tokyo? Throughout September, you can enjoy tea while cruising around Tokyo in a blazing red London bus. The retro double-decker bus belongs to the Routemaster series, which was built in the 1960s. Its second floor has been remodelled into a café with 20 seats, from where you’ll have good views of the city.
Aside from the unique setting, the menu on board is catered by one of Tokyo’s most popular cafés for afternoon tea – Ginger Garden Aoyama . There are three different Afternoon Tea Bus Tours available between August 31 and September 30. More details below.
From August 31 to September 12 (except on September 6), you can enjoy a special tour in collaboration with Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi’s British Fair . The daily-changing afternoon tea set comes with the same scones and cakes sold at the British Fair.
This 90-minute British Fair Afternoon Tea Bus Tour departs and arrives in front of the Nihombashi Mitsukoshi Main Store . There are three tours a day, plus two extra tours on Friday evenings, starting at 11am, 1pm and 3pm (¥6,800 per person) as well as 5pm and 7pm on Fridays (¥8,300 per person, including a glass of champagne).
Another option is the general Afternoon Tea Bus Tour , taking place on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and holidays from September 16 to September 30 . The bus departs from Aoyama (3-5-17 Kita-Aoyama, Minato) four times a day (11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5pm). The 90-minute experience costs ¥6,800 per person.
For night views, get on the High Tea Bus Tour instead. This option is perfect for special occasions as a glass of champagne is included in the afternoon tea set (¥8,300 per person). There are two sessions a day, running exclusively on Friday and Saturday between September 16 and 24 . The 90-minute tour departs from Aoyama (3-5-17 Kita-Aoyama, Minato) at 7pm and 9pm.
Tickets for primary school students and younger children are ¥3,000 for any of the three plans. Payments have to be made in advance with a credit card. Shortly after your online reservation, you’ll receive a confirmation email with a digital voucher, which you have to present on the day of the tour.
Bookings are already open for tours in September. Tickets go on sale on the 15th of every month at 3pm for the following month.

The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
- niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. - Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018

The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. - WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018
