Isla Catalina or Catalina Island is an island that flies under the radar in the Dominican Republic. It is one of the most beautiful Caribbean islands in the country and also one of the least visited. We’ll tell you why it’s an ideal island getaway destination whether you want to relax on the beach or try your hand at scuba diving and snorkeling in the clear blue waters. 

With so many excursions and tours to consider during your stay in Punta Cana, here’s what you can expect if you choose to visit Catalina Island as well as some things to do on your trip.

Where is Isla Catalina located and how do I get there?

Isla Catalina is part of La Romana Province on Hispaniola (the island shared by Haiti and DR). It’s one of two islands in El Este (Eastern) region. With a protected area larger than 7 miles long and 4 miles wide, Isla Catalina offers an idyllic Caribbean escape only 40 minutes from La Romana by fast boat.

Isla Catalina is located on the southeast corner of the Dominican Republic near the provinces of  La Altagracia  and  La Romana . It’s a popular location for snorkelers, its shallow waters and small size make it ideal for newbies who want some help getting comfortable in deep water.

Getting there

Making a trip to Isla Catalina is not like visiting your run-of-the-mill resort destination. It’s more of a full-day excursion. 

There are no flights to Isla Catalina. You must take a boat from La Romana. If you’re staying in Punta Cana , Cap Cana, or at a resort around Bávaro, you can also you can book the tour from a qualified operator that will take you to Catalina Island and back to your resort.

The water on Isla Catalina is crystal clear

Most days it’s so blue that it looks like you can see straight to the bottom. When you’re snorkeling or diving, you feel like a mermaid. The water is so crystal clear that some people claim you can see down as far as 20 feet.  

The seabed is filled with colorful fish and vibrant coral reefs. If you want to try scuba diving for the first time (or your 100th), there are plenty of dive shops on Isla Catalina where instructors will happily teach you how to use their equipment and explore the ocean depths.

Visting Isla Catalina does not need to cost a lot

Beautiful beach for a day trip! Visited Catalina Island beach for a day trip and had an enjoyable time with family and friends. The beach is pristine with crystal clear waters, great for snorkeling, swimming and scuba diving, lots of coral reefs in the area. They have picnic tables and bathrooms, which is good because no one lives on the island. Take bug spray with you to avoid insect bites, there are mosquitoes and horse flies in the area. If you like fishing this is also a great spot to fish from a boat or beach.

Most do (Jul. 2021) Nice excursion for a private beach and snorkeling. Catamaran boat ride was fun. All day excursion from Punta Cana .

Excellent Find your way out here. There is a beach on the west side of the island that is absolutely gorgeous. I recommend this to anyone.

Fun Fact: Captain Kidd’s lost ship “The Quedagh Merchant” found

In 2007, while snorkeling off the coast of Catalina Island, a snorkeler found cannons and contacted the Dominican Republic’s National Office of Underwater Cultural Heritage (ONPCS), which in turn contacted Indiana University.

Indiana University concluded that the archaeological record matches very well with the historical record therefore the wreck was the long-lost “ Quedagh Merchan t” which belonged to William Kidd .

Come get close up and personal with the fish and beautiful marine life in our local marine preserve. This guided tour of Catalina’s Avalon Dive Park will take you on a memorable Catalina Island activity as you explore our undersea gardens and learn about the local marine eco-system from our professionally trained instructors. Our kelp forests, clear water and beautiful marine life will make this a great addition to your vacation on Catalina Island.

What is included with my snorkeling tour? All snorkeling equipment is provided: mask, snorkel, fins, and wetsuit. Bring a towel, bathing suit, and your sense of adventure. Plan on a total of 2 hours to complete this experience – this includes time to get fitted for and return gear.

Upon check-in, at the start of your tour time, you will be fitted for a wet suit, fins, and mask. Once everyone is geared up, an orientation will be provided. Then you’re all set to get wet! Enjoy approximately a one-hour guided snorkel experience in the Avalon Dive Park near the majestic Casino.

For your safety, you should be in good health & free from high blood pressure, heart, neck or back problems, motion sickness, or other conditions that could be aggravated by this tour. Weather may impact this excursion. Please contact us in the event of inclement weather. You must be able to SWIM to partake in this experience. You will be swimming in the open ocean for the duration of the experience and unable to touch the ocean floor with the exception of entering and exiting the ocean via the Dive Park stairwell.

Single Snorkeler Fee:  Guided Snorkel Eco Tour generally requires a minimum of 2 (two) guests to operate. In the event that your purchase does not meet the minimum and yours is the only purchase, there is a $20 individual snorkeler fee/upcharge. The Catalina Tours Reservations Team will contact you should this be the case to advise of the fee and confirm how you would like us to proceed or the Catalina Divers Supply Team will notify you upon check-in.

Wear your bathing suit. Bring a towel, sunscreen, sandals, or flip flops, and sweatshirt. Spending money (gratuities for diving crews are not included in tour cost). This is an open-air excursion. Expect sun exposure! Bring & wear sunscreen. Check the dive shop in the lower level of the Casino Building for items you may want to enhance your experience.

There is no penalty for cancellations received 7 days prior to your activity.   If you need to cancel between 48 hours and seven days we will attempt to rebook your activity, but you may be assessed a rebooking fee. There will be no refunds for cancellations within 48 hours of your scheduled activity.

No-shows will be charged the full price. If you arrive and your instructor determines that you are not eligible for your activity,   either due to lack of certification or a safety issue, you will not be issued a refund. Anyone who arrives under the influence of drugs or alcohol will not be allowed to participate and there will be no refund.

Do I need a reservation for my Catalina Island Guided Snorkel Eco Tour?

While a reservation is not required, it is recommended. There are a limited number of times & guides available and they do sell out.

Where can I put my personal belongings while on tour?

Each location provides an area to store your belongings. It is always best to bring only necessities to your activity as storage space may be limited. Catalina Tours and its vendors are not responsible for the loss, damage or theft of personal property.

Can I take pictures on the Guided Snorkel Eco Tour?

Absolutely! Definitely bring your camera with you. You can purchase an underwater camera upon check-in. Take the memory home by renting a GoPro Hero 3 Silver Edition for $45.00 and you take the memory card with you to share with everyone. (This is sold on site, not through our website.)

El no pudo bucear o hacer snorkel, ¡pero usted sí que puede con una de nuestras excursiones o tours a la Isla Catalina! Es una oportunidad única de experimentar sus famosas vistas submarinas ayudado por nuestro personal atento y especializado.

¡Nuestro tour es perfecto para BUCEAR Y HACER SNORKEL ! La excursión a la Isla Catalina permitirá que amigos y familias, con distintos intereses en buceo o snorkel, estén juntos durante todo el día, excepto durante las visitas a los arrecifes donde, por ejemplo, los buceadores bajarán más profundo en la famosa “Pared de Catalina” mientras los snorkelers disfrutan de la parte superior de la pared donde hay un extenso manto de arrecife de coral.

En el viaje de regreso, navegaremos en bote por el famoso río Chavón. Disfrutarás de increíbles vistas sobre las orillas y colinas empinadas que bordean este río mientras tomas una bebida fresquita. El tour de buceo en Isla Catalina le llevará a “THE WALL”, un espectacular precipicio. Desde la playa, una suave pendiente conduce hacia el muro, y después encontramos una caída brusca hacia las profundidades. Cada centímetro cuadrado de esta meseta y muro submarino está cubierto con esponjas y corales duros y blandos. La plataforma varía de 1.5 a 6 metros, permitiendo suficiente tiempo para que los buceadores se recuperen del nitrógeno en su vuelta desde el muro.

El nombre del siguiente sitio de buceo lo dice todo. Increíbles y sanos corales le esperan en el fondo más plano y arenoso, lleno de mantas raya, langostas, morenas, pez ángel, pez burro, pargo rojo, pez soldado y de chapines pintados es sólo una parte de su atractivo. Enormes esponjas florero y esponjas barril esconden cangrejos de piedra y arañas de mar. Este tour puede SER COMPARTIDO CON COMPAÑEROS DE VIAJE QUE NO DESEEN BUCEAR.

Isla Catalina es una de las más bonitas de todo el Caribe. A pocos kilómetros de La Romana, al Este de República Dominicana, la isla cuenta con apenas 15 kilómetros cuadrados de playas y selva en la que destacan la fauna y la flora . Aunque es la segunda isla más grande del país, solo por detrás de isla Saona.

Catalina es una isla que destaca por su belleza natural y sus paisajes vírgenes. Forma parte del Parque Nacional del Este , y está preparada para acogerte y que disfrutes de una calma que solo los lugares tan auténticos pueden brindarte. Muchos visitantes comentan tras las excursiones que se han encontrado con las playas más bonitas que han visto en su vida: vírgenes, paradisíacas, con arena blanca y agua cristalina, isla Catalina se convierte en un sitio ideal para realizar actividades acuáticas .

La isla tiene tres playas principales: la del Este, del Oeste y del Norte. En esta excursión podrás disfrutar de ellas, sobre todo de la del oeste, que es la que más turismo acoge por su belleza.

El snorkel  y el buceo alcanzan en isla Catalina su máximo significado, y es que el litoral de la isla esta formado por arrecifes de corales en los que viven peces tropicales de todos los colores, estrellas de mar y mucha más variedad de fauna marina que junto al agua cristalina lo hacen una zona perfecta para sumergirse.

Si estás en Punta Cana no te puedes perder isla Catalina, conocida por los taínos como Toeya . Es uno de los 29 parques nacionales que existen en República Dominicana.

Se encuentra a pocos kilómetros al sureste de la isla La Española , en La Romana, y el traslado dura apenas 30 minutos en barco desde el puerto. En el trayecto podrás disfrutar de un paisaje espectacular y es posible que podamos ver, a escasos metros, animales cómo los manatíes o delfines .

Es una de las islas con más biodiversidad del país y es que hay más de 300 especies de aves en la zona. Además, entre la vegetación, se encuentran más de 500 variedades de plantas.

Por todo esto, es una de las experiencias más solicitadas por los turistas.

Horario de salida: 7:00 am hora dominicana, recogida en hoteles, todos los días, itinerario de la excursión isla catalina.

• 08:30 – Salida desde nuestro punto de encuentro hacia La Romana.
• 10:30 – Llegamos a La Romana, donde embarcaremos hacia isla Catalina.
• 10:45 – Embarcaremos a bordo del catamarán , donde te invitaremos a probar nuestras bebidas locales y podrás disfrutar durante todo el trayecto de nuestro equipo de animación y la música dominicana .
• 11:45 – Hacemos nuestra primera parada donde harás snorkel junto con un guía profesional, el cual te podrá resolver todas las dudas que te surjan. Si no sabes nadar, no te preocupes, nuestro guía te acompañará durante toda la actividad.
• 13:30 – Buffet libre , donde degustarás los mejores platos de la cocina criolla dominicana .
• 14:30 – Hora de ocio para disfrutar de la maravillosa playa de Isla Catalina.
• 15:30 – Volvemos hacia La Romana.
• 17:00 – Iniciamos el viaje de vuelta hasta tu alojamiento.

¿Qué viene incluido en la excursión a Isla Catalina?

La excursión a isla Catalina sale todos los días. Comienza desde temprano e incluye el traslado desde tu hotel hasta la localidad de La Romana, a 69 kilómetros de carretera de Punta Cana, desde donde sale el catamarán hacia isla Catalina. La duración aproximada de la excursión suele ser de 8 horas , por lo que regresarás a tu hotel a la tarde-noche.

En el catamarán tendrás acceso a bebidas locales y gozarás de la compañía de un equipo de animación que te mantendrá entretenido durante todo el trayecto.

Una vez en la isla y rodeado de la fina arena de sus playas, tendrás de tiempo libre para que puedas disfrutar de este pequeño paraíso . Las opciones son infinitas: relajarte, hacer snorkel, paseos por la costa...

Esta excursión también incluye un buffet libre para almorzar , en el que podrás probar alimentos típicos y bebidas de la República Dominicana.

El equipo de snorkel también viene incluido en el precio de la excursión, y consta de: salvavidas, aletas y gafas de buceo , además de estar acompañados por un guía profesional durante todo el rato en el agua. Esta excursión a Isla Catalina es la ocasión perfecta para desconectar en sus playas y practicar snorkel. Pasaréis un día de ensueño en este paraíso del Caribe dominicano .

Tras recogeros en vuestro hotel de Punta Cana entre las 7:00 y las 8:30 horas, nos dirigiremos en autobús hacia el puerto de La Romana . Allí, subiremos en una lancha, barco o  catamarán hasta nuestro destino.

A bordo de esta embarcación haremos una parada en una barrera de coral donde podremos practicar snorkel . Os sorprenderá la variedad de fauna del fondo marino caribeño: peces tropicales, algas y coloridas formaciones de coral. Tras esta parada, nos dirigiremos hasta la Isla Catalina, un islote protegido ubicado dentro del Parque Nacional Cotubanamá.

Una vez fondeemos, tendréis el resto del día libre para disfrutar de las playas de la isla a vuestro aire . Si os gusta la belleza subacuática, podréis volver a coger el equipo de snorkel. Si sois más de disfrutar de la tranquilidad tumbados en la arena , es el momento de hacerlo. O preferís explorar la isla, podréis visitar el Aquarium de Isla Catalina.

 Isla Saona (or in English Saona Island) is the most popular tourist destination for day-trips in the Dominican Republic. It is an island in the southeast of the country, dotted with palm-fringed beaches (some of the best beaches in the Domican Republic ) and surrounded by incredibly blue turquoise waters. It is part of the National Park Cotubanamá (formerly called Parque Nacional del Este).

 Isla Saona gets visited every day by thousands of tourists. Despite those hordes, it is a beautiful place (I couldn’t believe it before I was there for the first time). When arriving at this picture-perfect island with its stunning coastline, you will feel like you are in paradise.  Most of the Saona Island excursions have a set amount of stops. You will see the natural swimming pool with some starfish, have (sometimes) a quick mediocre snorkeling stop (please note that Isla Saona is not a snorkeling excursion – check out this post if you are looking for better snorkeling options ), cruise along the coastline of the national park with an ocean catamaran and have a speed boat ride the other way back.  As indicated at the beginning of this article, Isla Catalina is less visited than Isla Saona – that’s also why there are fewer companies for private tours. 

 The best private excursion I can recommend for Isla Catalina is this private boat tour *. It is suitable for up to 15 people and comes with a price tag of 1500 USD, lunch and drinks are included. That’s just 100 USD per person for a private tour if you go with 15 people, which is much cheaper than most Isla Saona private tours.

 You will start your tour in La Romana and stop at the most famous snorkeling spot in the area , where you can see colorful fish and a tropical reef. At the island, you have plenty of time to enjoy your private lunch, the beautiful beach and refreshing drinks – alcoholic and non-alcoholic. In the afternoon, you head back to your starting point.

 Both islands have their advantages. Isla Saona offers more spectacular scenery and picture-perfect views , Isla Catalina is quieter and has better snorkeling.

 As you can read in my review about Isla Catalina , it further scores with its catamaran cruise, as you can enjoy it both ways as opposed to the combined speed boat-/catamaran ride to Isla Saona.

 However, this is different for private tours, which is why I would lean more towards Isla Saona if I had to choose where to go on a private excursion from Punta Cana with my friends or family. Isla Saona offers more things-to-see and more spectacular spots. The crowds (which are currently not present due to Covid-19) don’t matter that much if you have your own tour anyway. Just if snorkeling is important for you or if you have already been to Isla Saona, Isla Catalina might be the better pick for you.
