Walking the Walk in Hamilton’s Old Stomping Grounds

hamilton walking tour

By Helene Stapinski

  • Jan. 21, 2016

Jimmy Napoli is not throwing away his shot.

For the past 20 years, this guide and Alexander Hamilton expert has been leading tourists and residents through the streets of New York City, telling them stories of the Revolutionary War and its heroes. Now that Hamilton is the star of a hit Broadway musical, Mr. Napoli is focusing a new tour on his favorite founding father.

“A lot of us have been preaching about Hamilton for a very long time,” said Mr. Napoli, 51, an owner of Outside In Tours who has written, lectured and been interviewed in a PBS documentary about the man whose face graces the $10 bill. “He’s finally getting his due.”

Starting on Saturday, Mr. Napoli will be running a three-hour tour through Hamilton Heights and Washington Heights in Manhattan, filling in the blanks — and then some — for both newbies and groupies of the musical “Hamilton,” those who are as obsessed as he is with the first secretary of the Treasury.

On a dry run last weekend, Mr. Napoli met a reporter on the steps of the Morris-Jumel Mansion in Washington Heights, where the $50 tour begins. Mr. Napoli, like the man he so admires, is a force of nature, with the energy of an entire cast of actors. He’s six feet tall — “shorter than Washington, though taller than Hamilton” — with long brown hair that he sometimes pulls back into a ponytail.

Dressed in a black “Hamilton” musical T-shirt (he has seen it twice), with an American flag scarf wrapped around his neck, Mr. Napoli looks more like a rock musician than a history buff. (He grew up in Queens and was once a roadie for the Ramones.)

The mansion, tucked into a quiet corner near West 160th Street, was George Washington’s headquarters in the fall of 1776 during the Battle of Harlem Heights, with strategic views of the city and the Harlem and Hudson Rivers. This is also where Aaron Burr, the former vice president who killed Hamilton in a duel, later lived. Walls are decorated with portraits of Burr and his second wife, Eliza Jumel.

Mr. Napoli segues into Hamilton’s humble beginnings on the Caribbean island of Nevis, born the illegitimate son of a Scotsman in 1755 or 1757 (scholars debate the date), though, he said, the musical’s creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, “splits the difference and says 1756 in the play.”

Hamilton’s mother, of French Huguenot descent, died of yellow fever in 1768, leaving the boy an orphan. He inherited her book collection, “consuming every one of them,” Mr. Napoli said.

When he was a teenager, Hamilton’s account of a hurricane’s damage to the island, published in The Royal Danish American Gazette, impressed local businessmen, who collected money to send him to the American colonies to study. He ended up at King’s College (now Columbia University), but after a year he joined the American Revolution.

“He wanted to serve in the military,” Mr. Napoli said, “because in war, a man could advance beyond his social status.” During the Battle of Brooklyn in August 1776, Hamilton stole British guns and cannons. Pacing around the mansion’s first floor, Mr. Napoli gives a colorful description of the battle.

It wasn’t until the Battle of Harlem Heights that General Washington and Hamilton had their first encounter. “He realizes that this kid’s got it together,” Mr. Napoli explained. “And for the next 22 years, Hamilton and Washington work side by side.”

On cue, Mr. Napoli heads for a tour of the second floor, including the bedroom, which was Washington’s war room. It’s here where Mr. Miranda wrote part of his musical, using the room for inspiration.

Mr. Napoli moves on to the dining room, where Washington, as president, held one of his first cabinet meetings with Hamilton, War Secretary Henry Knox, Vice President John Adams and Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson.

As Washington’s aide-de-camp, Hamilton essentially managed the war for the general, Mr. Napoli said. “He reprimanded other generals for him, set up his spy networks.” He describes the victorious Battle of Yorktown, led by Hamilton, then moves on to the Constitutional Convention of 1787 and eventually the Federalist Papers, articles and essays that called for ratification of the United States Constitution.

Hamilton wrote 51 of those 85 documents, “writing five or six essays a week while working as a lawyer at the same time, defending British loyalists who had had their land taken away,” Mr. Napoli said.

After the Constitution’s passage, Hamilton set up the State Department, organized the War Department, created the United States Customs Service, the Coast Guard and the Treasury Department.

“Hamilton was the man,” Mr. Napoli said.

Hamilton’s role in creating a strong central government is covered, as well as the Reynolds Pamphlet from 1797, in which Hamilton admitted to an affair and the extortion by the woman’s husband that followed. “He essentially says: ‘I’m not a crook. I’m an adulterer,’” Mr. Napoli said.

Around this time, Mr. Napoli leads the tour outside and down Edgecombe Avenue, along Highbridge Park, describing the neighborhood that has grown up around the mansion. He points out the so-called Triple Nickel building, at 555 Edgecombe, where Count Basie and Lena Horne both lived; Yankee Stadium rising in the distance; and Rucker Park, where Julius Erving played basketball. Up 150th Street and onto St. Nicholas Avenue, we pass Tsion Cafe, where his group can stop for coffee.

The mile-long walking tour wends past the corner at 143rd Street and Convent Avenue, where Hamilton built his Federal-style house, now the Hamilton Grange National Memorial, moving uptown to the quiet country from Wall Street in 1802. That large yellow three-story home is where he lived after his eldest son, Philip, died in a duel, defending his father’s honor over the sex scandal. It’s also where Hamilton spent the last two years of his life.

To make room for development, the home was moved a block from its original site in 1889, its balconies removed and the house squeezed next to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, where a large statue of Hamilton now stands out front. In 2008, the house was moved once more to West 141st Street and Hamilton Terrace, where it seems to have found its permanent spot.

Inside the restored home, Mr. Napoli tells about the country’s first national debt — to pay its soldiers and the countries that helped finance the Revolutionary War. He recounts Washington’s death and eventually Hamilton’s duel with Burr in Weehawken, N.J. Short of taking us in a rowboat across the Hudson to the scene of the duel, Mr. Napoli paints a vivid portrait of that 1804 showdown, using his own torso to show where Hamilton was fatally wounded.

Finally, he tells us how for 50 years after Hamilton’s death, his wife, Eliza, would collect his writings and tell his story, the one that Mr. Napoli has now passed on to us. We view the period rooms, decorated with Eliza’s actual mirrored serving tray and re-creations of Hamilton’s writing table, quill pens in place.

And then it’s off once again, this time around the corner to the Grange, a hip new bar and restaurant where his followers can have a convivial drink and maybe brunch. They can even continue the conversation and ask questions of Mr. Napoli, who’s only just getting started.

An earlier version of a picture caption with this article misstated the location of the Morris-Jumel Mansion. It is in Washington Heights, not Hamilton Heights.

Self-Guided Walking Tour of Hamilton Landmarks [Google Map Included]

Trinity Church on the Self-Guided Hamilton Walking Tour in NYC

You might have heard that Hamilton hit it big on Broadway , but he’s also on Broadway — literally, at 89 Broadway, to be exact, where he’s buried.

Trinity Churchyard is just one of the stops in our self-guided walking tour of Hamilton landmarks here in New York. While Alexander Hamilton might have risen in fame more recently, first with the Broadway musical and then again this year with Disney’s release of the Hamilton movie, he’s been celebrated throughout the Financial District for years.

As a founding father, he left his footprint on America beyond just having his face on the $10 bill. He founded the Federalist Party, set up the U.S. Coast Guard, launched the country’s oldest daily newspaper (The New York Post), and created the U.S. Bank while serving as Secretary of the Treasury.

As President Jefferson says in “Hamilton: An American Musical:”

I’ll give him this, his financial system is a work of genius.

And that all started here in New York.

So it’s no surprise there are a few landmarks, specifically in the Financial District , connected to this famous founding father.

All of these stops are conveniently within walking distance of each other, and we’ve included an Google Map so you can get directions on the go for your self-guided tour.

Let’s go.

1. Fraunces Tavern

Historic Fraunces Tavern in Lower Manhattan New York City

Fraunces Tavern is the oldest restaurant in New York City. It’s famous as a place where the Sons of Liberty secret society met during colonial days, and George Washington has dined there, too. But there’s also a Hamilton connection — Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr met at Fraunces Tavern before their duel on July 11, 1804.

The tavern has carefully preserved its early American history through an on-site museum, worth checking out if you have the time.

2. 57 Wall Street: Hamilton’s Home and Office

57 Wall Street location of Hamilton's home and office

The many-columned building at 57 Wall Street isn’t the same building that Hamilton once lived in (that’s been torn down — alas!), but it is the place where he practiced law. He worked out of his office here before moving to 69 Stone Street and later to Exchange Place.

Fun fact: When the Hamiltons lived here for 10 years, it was actually 58 Wall Street.

3. 57 Maiden Lane

57 Maiden Lane for Hamilton Self-Guided Walking Tour

Just a few blocks over, you’ll come to 57 Maiden Lane.

There’s a story behind this one. One of the biggest political dramas in Hamilton’s day was the Compromise of 1790, epically captured in the song, “The Room Where It Happened.”

Sometimes called the Dinner Table Bargain, this was a compromise between Thomas Jefferson and James Madison (on one side) and Hamilton (on the other). Hamilton wanted the U.S. government be responsible for state debts, and Madison and Jefferson vehemently disagreed.

But there was something they wanted — to have the U.S capital moved from New York to Washington D.C. The two parties met at Jefferson’s New York City home at 57 Maiden Lane and reached an agreement.

Jefferson’s house is no longer there, but a plaque stands in its place where you can read all about it.

4. Federal Hall

Federal Hall with George Washington statue

We love Federal Hall. We visit there on our guided tour of Lower Manhattan . We snap awesome pictures of tour groups posing next to the statue of Washington. We even did a whole blog post just on Federal Hall and its history and everything you can do when you visit.

But enough about why we love Federal Hall. What about Hamilton? When he became Secretary of the Treasury in 1789, he attended two Congressional sessions at this building. At the time, Congress met at Federal Hall.

That means this is the place where Hamilton submitted reports that eventually became law, including the Tariff Act of 1790.

Working as a lawyer, he also argued cases at Federal Hall. The “Manhattan Murder Trial” in 1804 — the first murder trial in the young nation’s legal history. A Hamilton quote (from “Non-Stop”) seems appropriate here:

Gentlemen of the jury, I’m curious, Bear with me Are you aware that we’re making history? This is the first murder trial of our brand-new nation The liberty behind deliberation

5. Trinity Church

Tour Group at Trinity Church

The last stop on our self-guided Hamilton walking tour is — appropriately — Hamilton’s last stop as well. His final resting place is in the historic cemetery at Trinity Church.

His funeral was held at the church on July 14, 1804. You can see his tombstone when you visit the churchyard.

Alexander Hamilton Grave at Trinity Churchyard NYC

There are a few famous people buried in Trinity Churchyard . These include Hamilton’s wife, Eliza, and his eldest son, Philip.

Map for Your Hamilton Walking Tour

Here’s a free map that has each of these stops in oder. It won’t take more than 20 minutes or so to walk from point to point, though you might take a little longer if you want to explore any of the places more (such as visiting the Fraunces Tavern museum).

If you take this self-guided tour, let us know what you think of it! We’d love to hear your feedback on Facebook and if you’d like more free walking tours. Our local experts have tons of ideas we could share.

5 Hamilton Landmarks in the Financial District

5 Hamilton Landmarks in the Financial District

Alexander Hamilton is and was many things: an immigrant, a founding father, the face on the $10 bill, and the creator of the Federalist Party, the United States Coast Guard, and The New York Post newspaper. He was also the nation’s first Secretary of the Treasury and, as such, was responsible for designing the American financial system — the Bank of the United States.

You might have heard of him from the hit Broadway musical. But his contributions have also been commemorated and celebrated throughout the Financial District.

Planning to visit New York City? Here are some stops you won’t want to miss on a tour of the Financial District . (Don’t miss the interactive Google Map at the bottom so you can get walking directions to go.)

Federal Hall

Federal Hall on Hamilton Walking Tour

After Alexander Hamilton became Secretary of the Treasury in 1789, he attended two sessions held by Congress which met at Federal Hall. There, Hamilton submitted reports that eventually became legislation, including the Tariff Act of 1790.

As a lawyer, Hamilton also argued cases at Federal Hall, including  the “Manhattan Murder Trial” in 1804.

57 Wall Street: Hamilton’s Home and Office

57 Wall Street on Hamilton Tour of NYC

Though the building is no longer there, Hamilton practiced law at his home and office at 57 Wall Street before moving to 69 Stone Street and then later to Exchange Place.

57 Maiden Lane

57 Maiden Lane for Hamilton Tour of New York City

One of the biggest scandals of the day was the Compromise of 1790, also known as the “Dinner Table Bargain.” Hamilton wanted the national government to assume and pay state debts. Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, who would be future presidents, wanted to move the nation’s capital from New York to Washington D.C. You probably know how it turned out.

The three politicians met at Jefferson’s New York City residence at 57 Maiden Lane. While the house that contains “the room where it happened” is no longer there, there’s a plaque in its place.

Trinity Church

Trinity Church NYC Hamilton Grave

Hamilton’s funeral was on July 14, 1804, at Trinity Church. He is one of the most famous people buried in the Trinity Church Cemetery, along with his wife, Eliza, and his first son, Philip.

Fraunces Tavern

Fraunces Tavern in NYC

Just before their infamous duel on July 11, 1804, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr had their last social meeting at the Fraunces Tavern. The historic tavern still operates as a restaurant where you can grab a bite to eat, and there’s even an on-site museum to visit if you want to learn more.

Free Self-Guided Hamilton Walking Tour

If you’re ready to hit the streets of New York City to see all these Hamilton sites, this simple walking tour will get you started. You can visit all five locations easily on foot, making this a great tour for all ages.

Here’s a free map to help you plan your self-guided trip into history.

  • On this tour you visit and learn about Trinity Church, which is a community-centric entity despite being the richest church in America. They are very focused on inclusivity and the needs of the Lower Manhattan community.
  • On the tour route, you will see Neapolitan Express, which began as an eco-friendly food truck powered by alternative energies.

With the success of the hit musical Hamilton, we’ve created a tour to help people understand how an illegitimate immigrant finds his way to New York, remakes himself, and becomes one of our most brilliant, charismatic, and controversial founding fathers! Walk in the footsteps of Alexander Hamilton through New York City’s oldest neighborhood, the financial district, and discover how this famous New Yorker has his fingerprints on nearly every landmark these streets have to offer. Our adventure begins at Trinity Church, where Hamilton was buried as a result of one of the darkest days in American political history. Learn how Hamilton arrived in America on the eve of a revolution and quickly became one of the most influential minds of his day, only to be shot dead before his 50th birthday. We’ll stop by Zuccotti Park and uncover how more recent revolutionary movements like Occupy Wall Street trace their roots to Hamilton’s ambitious plans for American prosperity. Next, we’ll learn how Hamilton’s role as America’s first Secretary of the Treasury ultimately led to the creation of the New York Stock Exchange. Across the street sits Federal Hall, where Hamilton looked on as George Washington was sworn in as our nation's’ first president and where he served in the first cabinet. We’ll then check out the two Wall Street skyscrapers that still stand as reminders of the epic feud between Hamilton and Burr, one emblazoned with the name of one of our more recent politicians and local celebrities, Donald Trump. Finally, we’ll make our way down the first paved street in New York City to one of the oldest bars in town where Hamilton himself used to drink with George Washington. Along the entire route, we will discover not only Hamilton’s history in New York but also how he came to epitomize the American Dream, created the modern world we live in today, inspired many of our wealthy leaders who continue to shape the city and world, and finally, how he wrestled with the questions of wealth, privilege, and power in ways that are just as relevant today as they were in the 1700s.

City of Hamilton Walking Tour

As Bermuda's capital, the City of Hamilton is a walkable, lively centre of commerce and culture that entices with its colourful, welcoming character.

  • Beyond the Beach,
  • People & Culture

As you walk, take in the history, harbour views, pastel-coloured architecture, inviting green spaces and, of course, local people going about their business (perhaps in their iconic Bermuda shorts).

One way to gain an appreciation of the local flavour is to fall in step with Hamilton's Town Crier, Ed Christopher. Dressed in traditional garb, he leads daily city walking tours beginning at 10:30 am, Monday through Friday from April to October. The tours begin on the steps of City Hall on Church Street. Listen for the Town Crier's ringing bell and shouted welcome as he draws a crowd.

Self-Guided Cultural Walking Tour

If you prefer to chart your own course, grab a city map and discover the heart of Hamilton on your own. In a couple of hours, you can see many of Hamilton's notable cultural attractions. Here is one of many walking routes to try:

ART, HISTORY & GARDENS

Start by visiting the City Hall & Arts Centre on Church Street. This bright white building is home to the  Bermuda National Gallery , which features both local and international art, including 17th and 18th century European paintings by artists such as Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. Upstairs is the  Bermuda Society of Arts  gallery, with rotating exhibits of work by local visual artists.

Back outside on Church Street, make your way down Queen Street heading south toward the harbour. On your right, check out the Historical Society Museum and National Library. History buffs will enjoy the extensive collection of documents and rare island artifacts. The building is set within Par-La-Ville Gardens, designed by Bermuda's first Postmaster General, William Bennett Perot. Nearby you'll find Perot's original post office. Still active, it looks much as it did when he was appointed in 1821.

FRONT STREET

When you reach the bottom of Queen Street, turn left and join the lively throngs on  Front Street , with its pastel, Colonial-style buildings, restaurants, shops and galleries. Be sure to explore the lanes and alleyways off Front Street for more local flavour. On Wednesday evenings in the summer, the street is alive with the irresistible rhythms of Bermuda's beloved Gombey dancers during Harbour Nights.

On the corner of Front Street & Parliament Street, you will find the Cabinet Building, with its distinctive Cenotaph war monument out front. One block north of Cabinet House is the Sessions House, dating from 1819. Bermuda's parliament is the oldest in the British Commonwealth; when in session, there is a public gallery.

HISTORIC CHURCHES & TEA TIME

Turn left at the intersection of Parliament and Church Streets and walk by some of Bermuda's oldest historic churches, including the  Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity . This magnificent Anglican cathedral was built of native stone and imported Caen stone, and was designed by William Hay of Edinburgh in Restoration-Gothic style. On weekdays, you can climb the 143-foot tower for a stunning view of the city.

As you head back toward City Hall, consider a relaxing stroll through the shady paths of Victoria Park. Or, head straight to the Washington Mall for tea, pastry and shopping.

Doug Fox’s Hamilton Tour in NYC

Summer, 2022 : As soon as I watched the YouTube video of Lin-Manuel Miranda performing a song that was to become the opening number of Hamilton: An American Musical for President Obama in 2009, I was enthralled. The hip hop-inspired musical tells the story of founding father and immigrant Alexander Hamilton, and, in the process, has elevated the reputation of the first Secretary of the Treasury to new heights.

I find it very rewarding to conduct Hamilton walking tours. Participants of all ages bring incredible excitement and energy to these tours. Many have listened to and often memorized the lyrics to the show’s tunes that delve into the history of Hamilton and his family, the American Revolution and the early Republic. So it’s especially fun and satisfying for me to connect the stories from the musical to the sites in New York City where Hamilton lived, worked, fought and died.

So if you are ready to learn about the history that inspired the musical, I encourage you to book a private Hamilton tour. On the tour page , you will find a description of this walking tour, the names of the famous and infamous people you will learn about and a listing of sites we will visit in Lower Manhattan.
