The Top 15 Things to Do in Jammu, India

jammu near by tourist places

Twenty47Studio / Getty Images

Jammu, the winter capital of the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, is the gateway to the revered Vaishno Devi cave temple and the pristine but conflicted Kashmir Valley . Located on the cliffs of the Shivalik range, by the banks of river Tawi, this region is named after the 14th-century ruler Raja Jambu Lochan, who is widely credited with establishing the city. Although the city has been in existence since Vedic times, its majestic structures date back to the 2nd century, giving it the nickname "The City of Temples."

Jammu was the seat of the Dogra dynasty, the creators of the Jammu and Kashmir state, until its ruler Maharaja Hari Singh acceded to the Union of India following the country’s partition in 1947. If you're planning a visit, here are the top things to do.

Visit the Bahu Fort

Located in the precincts overlooking the old Jammu city, the Bahu Fort is dedicated to Goddess Kali, the presiding deity of the city of Jammu. While the often renovated Bahu Fort, built by the ruler Bahu Lochan, isn’t open to the public due to security reasons, a visit to view this temple is a great way to learn more about its history. Made of white-marble, the temple, built in the 8th or 9th century, is small and compact. It is an extremely popular destination, so expect crowds.

Take a Stroll in the Bagh-e-Bahu Garden

On the fringes of the Bahu Fort lies Bagh-e-Bahu, a terrace style garden. Here, you'll find charming man-made cascades, a children’s park, an underground aquarium, and floral gardens on various levels. Well located viewpoints have been built for visitors to enjoy the many sunsets and cityscapes of Jammu.

Taste Jammu Cuisine in Gandhi Nagar

When in Jammu, make sure to try the region's local cuisine and sample street food at the bamboo carts in Gandhi Nagar. Freshly prepared and priced affordably, these outlets are a hit with the evening crowd and locals of all ages.

The Jammu and Kashmir region is especially known for a special type of red kidney bean called the Jammu Rajma. Its deep red color and taste sets it apart from other Indian Rajma varieties. The dish is best savored with hot steamed basmati rice.

Step Back in Time at the Mubarak Mandi

The Mubarak Mandi was the royal residence of the Dogra kings until 1925, when Maharaja Hari Singh moved to the Hari Niwas palace. Though its foundational stone was laid by Raja Dhru Dev in 1710, many buildings and courtyards have been added to the complex in recent years, replacing substantial portions that were destroyed due to fires and earthquakes. Today, the expansive Mubarak Mandi, with its exquisite Rajasthani, Mughal and Baroque architectural elements, remains a "work in progress" heritage complex spanning two centuries. The Pink Hall inside Mubarak Mandi has been converted into a museum and holds several rare Pahari miniature paintings and artifacts, including the bow and arrow of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.

Admire the Architecture of Amar Mahal Palace

The 19th-century Amar Mahal Palace is perched high on Manda hill, overlooking the Tawi river valley. An erstwhile home of Jammu rulers, its architecture resembles that of a French chateau. Recently, Amar Mahal has been converted into a museum. Inside, visitors can enjoy a royal art collection, rare books and Dogra-Pahari paintings. Some fascinating exhibits in its collection include a golden sofa weighing 265 lbs and Victorian-style elevators.

See a Temple Built by a King

Raghunath Mandir is a Hindu temple complex built in the heart of Jammu city by Maharaja Gulab Singh in the year 1835 . The main deity of the temple is Lord Rama, an incarnation of Vishnu and one of the holy trinity of the Hindu religion.

There are seven shrines inside this temple complex dedicated to various gods and goddesses that make up the Hindu pantheon; all seven towers have gold-plated spires. The library inside the complex has a rich collection of over 6,000 manuscripts in Sanskrit and other ancient Indian languages.

Sample Jammu’s Local Cheese

The indigenous local cheese called Kalahri is a speciality of Jammu and Kashmir, so if you're visiting, make sure to give it a try. Kalahri’s texture is much similar to that of a mozzarella cheese, yet it tastes different. It’s often stuffed inside a pair of buns, toasted on a pan and served hot, with lip-smacking chutney and tomato sauce as accompaniments. Pandit Kalahri Hut on Moti Bazaar Road is one of the most authentic places to sample this local cheese.

Browse Through Raghunath Bazaar

Visitors can shop for carpets, Pashmina shawls, local delicacies like chocolate burfi and other souvenirs in the various shops of Raghunath Bazaar. The shops stretch all the way to Hari Market, surrounding the Raghunath mandir, and are frequented by locals who come to purchase handmade goods, spices, and sweets. A key item to buy here is saffron, a beloved spice in the Jammu region.

The twin lakes of Mansar and Surinsar are located in the lower reaches of the Shivalik range, and are around 43 miles from Jammu city. Dotted with beautiful hamlets, lakes and homestays, Sanasar is home to the largest tulip garden in the Jammu region, second only to the larger tulip garden of Srinagar in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir. It's a great place to stroll while taking in the flowers' inviting fragrances and eye-popping colors.

Sonmarg means a “meadow of gold”, and is one of the best tourist places in Jammu and Kashmir for sightseeing & adventure. Its landscape is marked by a glacier, forests and snow-capped mountains. This mountain is surrounded by the big Himalayan glaciers Kolahoi Glacier and Machoi Glacier, and it is the source of the famed Three Sisters of Kashmir Valley. The three Great Lakes in Kashmir: Kishansar, Vishansar and Gadsar, can be visited from here. Peaks such as Kolahoi Peak, Amarnath Peak, Machoi Peak, and Sirbal Peak tower over this lovely hill town, making Songamarg a renowned destination for adventure sports tourism. The Thajiwas range divides the Sonmarg Valley into two halves; on one side lies the fir-covered Thajiwas spur, which is popular for camping. The Thajiwas glacier, which is the main attraction of this place, is located on the other side.

Camping & trout fishing are some popular adventure activities. Sonmarg is also the starting point for the trek to Amarnath Cave , a major Hindu pilgrimage destination. However, in the winter, Sonamarg is inaccessible because of avalanches and heavy snowfall that shut the NH1D, which connects it to neighbouring locations. Except for the winter months (November to February), the climate in the area is normally suitable for tourism. It is best to visit flowery meadows between April and October to fully appreciate their splendour.

Pahalgam Jammu Kashmir

One of the most well-liked trekking areas is the Kolahoi Glaciers trip, which passes via the lovely settlement of Aru village, Pahalgam. Pahalgam in Kashmir Valley is a compassionate and beautiful reflection of nature. This small village is located at the intersection of two streams flowing from the beautiful Sheshnag Lake and the Lidder River and offers many breathtaking landscapes. Pahalgam is also known as the Valley of Shepherds.

Pahalgam was the location for the classic Bollywood film Betaab, starring Sunny Deol and Amrita Singh. As a result, the valley was renamed Betaab Valley. It is a visual treat with its meadows, forests and pristine environment. Aru Valley, Betab Valley and Baisaran are some of the places which make Pahalgam the best in Kashmir for a sightseeing tour. Dawar and Tilel are the two districts that make up the Gurez Valley. Dawar is also Gurez’s central settlement, and it is where all of the hotels are located.

Due to substantial snowfall of about 2 metres (7 ft) and the closure of Razdan Pass in winter, the Gurez Valley is cut off from the rest of the world for six months and also enhances its appeal as a famous tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir. The people who live here are one of the oldest tribes in Kashmir called the Dard Shin Tribe and speak a language called Shina. Villages are also spread across the valley, providing tourists with a glimpse into the tough yet peaceful lives of the residents.

Visitors can ride the Gurez helicopter operated by the Gurez Copter Service to see the valley from a whole different perspective. Given its altitude, the valley is expected to be colder than other places. Pack a warm jacket, gloves, and extra clothing to keep yourself warm in windy conditions, especially at night. The network is difficult to discover here, and companies such as Airtel and JIO may not work at all. BSNL is one of the few service providers that provides some services, but it is also bleak.

Verinag, on the route to Jammu, is a spring of great importance and beauty, with deep blue water that emerges from the bottom of a high scarp of a mountain spur, and this stone basin & arcade surrounding were built by Jahangir. This spring is well-known for never drying up or overflowing.

Emperor Jahangir constructed an octagonal pavement around the spring. The Emperor was so taken with the beauty of Verinag that when he died at Chengas village near Rajouri, he requested to be buried there. And after finishing the design for the spring and the adjoining garden, he said that the traveller who travelled around the world can rarely give any example of another site of such beauty.

At this location, a tourist bungalow, a rest house, and some shelters have been built. A Mughal Garden also stands right in front of this spring. The beautiful garden next to it was built by Shah Jahan. This tourist resort is located in Tehsil Shahabad Bala, approximately 26 kilometres from Anantnag Town. The spring is the main source of the River Jhelum. The Archaeological Survey of India has designated Verinag Spring and the Mughal Arcade surrounding it as a Monument of National Importance.

According to folklore, goddess Vitasta (Jhelum) planned to take her rise from here, but when she arrived, Shiva was already here, so she had to return and take her rise from Veravurthur, a spring approximately one mile to the north-west of this location. Virah means ‘to return’ in Sanskrit, and nag signifies a water spring, therefore because Vitasta had to return from this location, it became known as Virahnag or “Vernag.”

To fend off tourists, a town in Japan is building a big screen blocking the view of Mount Fuji

Tourists blocked from taking photos of Mt. Fuji in Japan

FUJIKAWAGUCHIKO, Japan — The town of Fujikawaguchiko has had enough of tourists.

Known for a number of scenic photo spots that offer a near-perfect shot of Japan ’s iconic Mount Fuji , the town on Tuesday began constructing a large black screen on a stretch of a sidewalk to block the view of the mountain. The reason: misbehaving foreign tourists.

“Kawaguchiko is a town built on tourism, and I welcome many visitors, and the town welcomes them too, but there are many things about their manners that are worrying,” said Michie Motomochi, owner of a cafe serving the Japanese sweets “ohagi,” near the soon-to-be-blocked photo spot.

Motomochi mentioned littering, crossing the road with busy traffic, ignoring traffic lights and trespassing on private property. She isn’t unhappy though — 80% of her customers are foreign visitors whose numbers have surged after a pandemic hiatus that kept Japan closed for about two years.

Her neighborhood suddenly became a popular spot about two years ago, apparently after a photo taken at a particular angle showing Mount Fuji in the background, as if sitting atop a local convenience store, became a social media sensation known as “Mt. Fuji Lawson,” town officials say.

The mostly foreign tourists have since crowded the small area, setting off a wave of concerns and complaints from residents about visitors blocking the narrow sidewalk, taking photos on the busy road or walking into neighbors’ properties, officials said.

In Europe, concerns over tourists overcrowding historic cities led  Venice last week to launch a pilot program  to charge day-trippers a 5-euro ($5.35) entry fee. Authorities hope it will discourage visitors from arriving on peak days and make the city more livable for its dwindling residents.

Fujikawaguchiko has tried other methods: signs urging visitors not to run into the road and to use the designated crosswalk in English, Chinese, Thai and Korean, and even hiring a security guard as crowd control. None worked.

Tourists blocked from taking photos of Mt. Fuji in Japan

The black mesh net, when completed in mid-May, will be more than 8 feet high and 65 feet long, and will almost completely block the view of Mount Fuji, officials said.

Dozens of tourists gathered Tuesday taking photos even though Mount Fuji was not in sight due to cloudy weather.

Anthony Hok, from France, thought the screen was an overreaction. “Too big solution for subject not as big, even if tourists are making trouble. Doesn’t look right to me,” he said. The 26-year-old suggested setting up road barriers for safety instead of blocking views for pictures.

But Helen Pull, a 34-year-old visitor from Britain, was sympathetic to the local concern. While traveling in Japan in the past few weeks, she has seen tourism “really ramped up here in Japan from what we’ve seen.”

“I can see why people who live and work here might want to do something about that,” she said, noting many were taking pictures even when the mountain was not in view. “That’s the power of the social media.”

Foreign visitors have flocked to Japan since the border restrictions were lifted, in part due to the weaker yen.

Tourists blocked from taking photos of Mt. Fuji in Japan.

Last year, Japan had more than 25 million visitors, and the number this year is expected to surpass the 2019 record of almost 32 million, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization. And the government wants more tourists.

While booming tourism has helped the economy, it has brought complaints from residents in popular tourist destinations, such as Kyoto and Kamakura. In Kyoto, a famous geisha district recently decided to close some private-property alleys.

Locals are uncertain about what to do.

Motomochi said she cannot imagine how the black screen can help control the flow of people on the narrow pedestrian walk and the road next to it.

Yoshihiko Ogawa, who runs a more than half-century-old rice shop in the Fujikawaguchiko area, said the overcrowding worsened in the past few months, with tourists gathering from around 4-5 a.m. and talking loudly. He sometimes struggles to get his car in and out of the garage.

“We’ve never thought we’d face a situation like this,” Ogawa said, adding he is unsure what the solution might be. “I suppose we all just need to get used to it.”
