What fellow travelers are saying

I love Away! From the thoughtfully created products to the customer service team that seems to go above and beyond, everything is exactly how I’d want it to be.

I’ve taken my [luggage] to Paris, San Francisco, New Mexico, Indonesia... I have never traveled more at ease. If there was a rating higher than 10, I’d give it.

The 7 Away Luggage Pieces We Recommend Most

I distinctly remember the moment I first laid my eyes on an Away suitcase . One of my coworkers had been talking nonstop about her new carry-on, and before heading out of town one day, she rolled the hard-shell spinner into the office. Like a proud new homeowner, she took our team on a tour through its features, leaving me mesmerized by its built-in compression straps and portable battery pack, as well as its stylish and sturdy design.

Though awestruck, I didn't immediately purchase my own; I was never one to invest in baggage—and the introductory price—$225 when it first hit the market—was beyond what I thought luggage was worth at the time. Following an ill-fated journey to Australia , in which I found my checked bag split open on the baggage carousel, the zipper having burst after I overstuffed it, I knew it was time to upgrade.

My first Away bag was The Bigger Carry-On , and despite having previously thought of luggage as glorified boxes to transport my travel essentials, I was immediately obsessed. For an overpacker, I was surprised how much I could stuff into the suitcase. Constantly slipping in “just one more” thing in, the zipper always held tight and the shell showed no signs of bulging. While on the go, the light glide of the wheels could tackle any surface, even cobblestone streets. Plus, the sleek, minimalist design just jived with me.

A suitecase.

Being the space hog I am, I later upgraded to The Bigger Carry-On Flex , which added an extra 2.25 inches of expansion, meaning even I was able to go on a two-week trip with just a carry-on . As much as I’ve banged it around and overstuffed it, it’s remained impervious to my abuse.

These days, I often see other brands trying to mimic Away's features—a sign of just how much it’s changed the luggage industry. What makes it all the more surprising is that Away is still a relatively new company, having roared onto the market in 2015, with one simple goal: understanding travelers.

“From the beginning, we set out to expand the conversation around travel, solving real world travel pain points by keeping an incredibly close pulse on our customer’s needs,” Away’s chief marketing officer Carla Dunham says. “We dissected and developed a solution to all of the common headaches of travel while revolutionizing what it meant to be a travel brand.”

Founded by two female former Warby Parker executives, including Jen Rubio, who still serves as the CEO, Away was sparked by her own broken baggage disaster, noticing there was a hole in the market for luggage that was fun and functional.

After talking to hundreds of travelers, the initial carry-on was designed to meet all the most common needs—a lighter and stronger hard-side with an impact-resistant polycarbonate shell that moved easily with premium 360-degree wheels, with thoughtful features like a snap-in mesh laundry bag to keep clean to separate clean and dirty laundry, and a removable battery pack to eliminate the fight for the airport outlets.

The result wasn’t just success—the brand quickly entered the zeitgeist. Stars from Margot Robbie to Mandy Moore were spotted toting them , and Meghan Markle is believed to have given 17 Away bags as party favors at her baby shower. They've turned up on screen, too. Dunham says her favorite pop culture moment was when Portia tossed her Away away in The White Lotus. “It seemed so natural that she had an Away suitcase and that spoke to the brand’s unique position in culture and continued relevance.”

Since launch, the price points for the standard editions—which now start at $315 for The Carry-On and go up to $475 for the newly introduced The Trunk —have gone up, and are a notch above what casual or new travelers may be used to paying, but are still fairly reasonably priced for the suitcases' quality.

The brand has ventured into other travel accessories since launch, too, with both hits ( packing cubes ) and misses (travel pillows, now discontinued)—and added an outdoor collection, F.A.R., last year . It continues to evolve based on the needs of the moment. With the growing number of power outlets available on flights and around airport terminals these days, Away just phased out its distinctive built-in battery charger from its core product last month, as part of its first major refresh of its original classics line .

“Each update is incredibly intentional—from the improved features like a redesigned zipper shape, additional interior organization, and an updated trolley system, to the fresh color palette and new gloss finish, underscores how we obsess over every detail to make the journey smoother for our customers,” Dunham says.

As the brand continues to evolve, more updates and new products are sure to come, but some of the products remain staples. Here, we round up the Condé Nast Traveler team’s most-used Away bags and accessories.

This article is part of Condé Nast Traveler' s first-ever Luggage Week , for which dozens of suitcases, backpacks, and weekender bags were road-tested by our editors.

Weight: 7.9 lbs. Dimensions: 23" x 15" x 10" Capacity: 47.9L

A recent convert from a larger suitcase that often had to be checked, editorial assistant Jessica Chapel says the refreshed Bigger Carry-On suitcase “does wonders,” especially since she can fit almost as much in this more compact hardside spinner, which she recently took on a five-day trip with plenty of room to spare. She’s already traveled with the 7.9-pound bag by plane, bus, and car, and put it to the test when delays allowed her only 15 minutes to get between gates. She swiftly pulled the bag out of the overhead compartment thanks to “the perfect mix of convenient handle placements and the texture of the luggage,” put the bag on top of her head—an unconventional carrying method, to be sure—and sailed through the crowd. “It's the little things, including the unique placement of the luggage's underside handle—with a small dash of adrenaline—that certainly does the trick for easy access without any shuffle, which is exactly what's needed in an airport rush,” Chapel says. (She made her connecting flight in the knick of time.)

Also notable, she says: the interior lining, mesh, and drawstring laundry for dirty clothes (no longer snapped, as part of the refresh), are made of recycled polyester. Deputy global editorial director Jesse Ashlock concurs, having depended on the classic version for more than three years now, calling it a “solid workhorse polycarbonate bag that suits a lot of different trip styles.” I recently tried the updated version of The Bigger Carry-On, and was able to pack enough for a weeklong California getaway; I am especially loving the additional inner pockets to keep my essentials more organized.

Weight: 10.4 lbs. Dimensions: 26" x 19" x 11" Capacity: 68.8L

During a two-week car trip to Rhode Island and Martha’s Vineyard, destinations editorial assistant Charlie Hobbs brought along the “perfectly light” 10.4-pound medium check-in sized hardside, able to fit enough in to not have to do laundry the entire getaway. The interior of the upgraded version—which he found “unassuming”—includes more storage pockets: The compression flap, which used to have just one large zipper mesh compartment, is now divided into two zippered sections on one side with an added large pocket on the backside. Additionally, the zipper closure for the top half of the suitcase now has a zippered pocket on it. He also noticed what’s perhaps the most commonly called-out downfall of Away’s hardsides: “Despite only ever being in the car, this bag is already quite scuffed up,” he said. (When I was in Estonia with two other travel writers last month, looking at our three Away bags, we commented the same thing.) Each suitcase does come with Away's own version of a Magic Eraser that helps remove light scuffs, though a bit of elbow grease might be needed to get them out. That said, Hobbs found the 360-degree wheels rolled “perfectly well” and appreciated the new ergonomic curved zippers. Like Chapel, he found the luggage easy to lift up in a bind, when he had to put it on the roof of a Toyota for a ferry ride, noting it was easy to sling it up, “thanks to the side handles.”

Weight: 8.15 lbs. Dimensions: 22" x 14" x 9" (not expanded) Capacity: 39.8L

“The joy of this luggage is its simplicity,” global director of audience development Lara Kramer says. At 8.15 pounds, this model has the expandable 2.25-inches of zipper space going from 39.8 liter capacity to 46.7 liters, providing “the luxury of expanding to add more room if needed,” she adds. She and her husband both use it as their carry-on suitcase—in part because it moves so well, “gliding smoothly and easily with its 360-degree spinner wheels.” Otherwise, she finds the other features “pretty straightforward,” also noting the issue of the exterior scuffing “very easily,” especially noticeable on a dark suitcase. “They're generally surface scuffs and not hard to buff out, but against the black color, it can look pretty jarring,” she adds. That said, Kramer says, “I still truly love this piece and it has continued to hold up despite many uses.”

Weight: 2.45 lbs. Dimensions: 12" x 6" x 18" Capacity: 20L

Simplicity comes first with this water-resistant nylon backpack, available in five subtle monochromatic shades, that CNT editors have called “functional” with “a classic look that you won’t tire of.” As a freelancer whose backpack is her office, that timeless look also means the backpack strikes the right balance of being professional (I’ve toted it to business meetings and events), travel-friendly (I’ve also taken it on day trips to the Jersey Shore and Long Island), and casual (it’s also doubled as my exercise bag for spin class). When I got caught in the rain at the US Open in New York, the raindrops wicked right off, and the bag's contents stayed dry. But my two favorite magic tricks of this bag are the extended clamshell-style zipper, which opens the main compartment and makes it just as easy to take something out of the bottom as the top, and the bag's weight distribution. Whether it’s the padded straps or the mesh back panel, it somehow makes the contents feel lighter—I’ve stopped at least twice to make sure my laptop was actually inside the 15-inch sleeve. Plus, the thoughtful number of pockets are great for storing little essentials.

away travel luggage store

Weight: 1.74 lbs. Dimensions: 19" x 13" x 8" Capacity: 26L

When it comes to travel backpacks, I’m far pickier than with luggage. I need an uber-spacious main compartment and every zipper and pocket needs to be just in place—so much so that I used the same ratty old Vans Off the Wall one for well over a decade. While I recently tested out a new Tumi backpack, I never liked the placements of its pockets. Enter the F.A.R. Backpack 26L. The main compartment is deep and wide open, yet still has a slip pocket in the back for my laptop. Hidden behind it is another zippered compartment that fits a 15-inch device. The front pocket is surprisingly roomy too, with tons of organizational pockets—plus, there are two water bottle side pockets, each able to hold a 32-ounce container. Add to that the fact the entire bag is only 1.74 pounds and it still fits under the seat in front of me on planes.

While the Everywhere Zip may be sufficient for day trips, personally, I do need the space of the 26-liter bag to fit my basic travel essentials for anything that includes an overnight stay. Plus the shell is tougher for more rugged travels, whether it's outdoor adventures or multi-stop itineraries, where it may be subject to more use. That said, I am still learning to trust mine completely. On two occasions, the zipper has opened on its own and I didn't realize until contents spilled out. But both times were when I was leaving hotels in a rush, so it's possible I didn't properly zip it.

Weight (full set): 0.7 lbs.

Dimensions: Small: 10" x 4" x 8" Medium slim: 10" x 4" x 4" Medium wide: 13" x 4" x 10" Large: 13" x 4" x 7"

Before I tried Away’s packing cubes, I was a skeptic of the travel accessory as a whole. Other cubes I had seen were either bulky, or felt rough, cheap, and pointless. Admittedly, when I first saw this innocuous set from Away, I was still doubtful. But as it turns out, this set of four nylon water-resistant zip bags with one mesh side are as subtle as they are useful. In the smallest one, I’m able to stuff in all my “just in case” accessories—a foldable running cap, beanie, scarf, gloves, and swimsuit, and tuck it into a teeny corner of the suitcase. The medium slim is perfect for organizing my underwear, packing them vertically, Marie Kondo–style , while the medium wide fits my bras, tanks, and socks. The final one, the large slim, rotates between storing pairs of shoes or other bulky items. They all fit together like Legos in my suitcase, weighing a combined 0.7 pounds—well worth it for keeping me organized on the go.

Away FAR Pouch in small

Weight: .8 oz. Dimensions: 6" x 8" x 3" Capacity: 0.5 gal.

When I first got this bag, I didn’t think I’d ever use it. It wasn’t quite a dry sack, it wasn’t quite a travel pouch. It was an in-between hybrid that I saw no practical use for. But then one day when I was running out the door, holding too many chargers in my hands, I tossed them in there—and it’s become my go-to tech accessories bag, traveling with me both on trips and in my everyday life. Made of water-resistant recycled ripstop nylon, it repels accidental spills (mostly coffee, in my case), but is so thin and sturdy that it doesn’t take up much space. The recycled nylon handle also makes it easy to grab when I’m trying to fish it out of my bag. Use it for chargers and cords, toiletries, or any other odds and ends, and know that there are small and large versions if you want a full set.

Are Away Carry-Ons Worth the Hype?

Kit Dillon

By Kit Dillon

Kit Dillon is a writer focused on bags and travel gear. He has worked for Wirecutter for a decade and lost count of the number of bags he has tested.

In the past, we have not been fans of hard-sided luggage.

Hard-sided suitcases are not (despite what many may think) tougher than their soft-sided counterparts. But they do have attributes that some people may value over durability.

Hard-shell bags usually weigh less than fabric ones, and they come in far more colors, prints, and textures.

So if, for whatever reason, you prefer a hard-shell case, we recommend the  Away Carry-On after seven years of testing hard-sided suitcases.

away travel luggage store

Away The Carry-On

The best hard-sided carry-on suitcase.

This is a great-looking, resilient piece of hard-sided luggage, with top-of-the-line components—including sturdy zippers and the smoothest wheels we tested—at a decent price.

Buying Options

If you want the look and lighter weight of a hard-sided bag, the Away Carry-On is our choice. Weighing 7.6 pounds and able to hold nearly 40 liters, this bag stood out among competitors for its high-end components, such as sturdy zippers and the best-rolling wheels of any bag we tested. We liked the wide array of available colors and the strong yet flexible polycarbonate shell. Polycarbonate shells will always show more wear than soft-sided luggage. But after using multiple models over seven years, our testers found that the Away had endured most of the trials of traveling, with only a few scratches. Away bags are also backed by a lifetime limited warranty , which covers you for cracks in the shell and any broken hardware (wheels, handles, and zippers).

The research

Should you choose a hard-sided or soft-sided carry-on, is the away bag really the best hard-sided carry-on, our pick: away the carry-on, the competition.

I recommend soft-sided luggage for most people . This is a conclusion I’ve come to over nine years of testing bags, traveling with them, and interviewing travel experts, flight attendants, baggage handlers, and luggage designers. Soft-sided luggage picks up fewer scuffs and marks, and it generally provides multiple pockets and compartments, so it’s more adaptable to individual travel habits.

The ubiquitous clamshell design of a hard-sided case makes packing and unpacking clumsy. Split into two sections, the entire case splays out when you open it, which can be particularly awkward in confined spaces, such as small hotel rooms. It’s tricky to pack two shallow, equal-size compartments if you have large or bulky items. Counterintuitively, hard-sided luggage also lacks rigidity when it’s not fully packed, and most hard-sided designs lack external pockets.

So why would anybody still want a such a bag? Because hard-sided suitcases look great. They come in bold colors and patterns that soft-sided luggage is incapable of matching. The bags are sleek and minimal; they typically weigh less than fabric shells; and they’re as unencumbered by any pedestrian concerns over exterior pockets as the lithe influencer gliding through your Instagram feed is by traditional employment opportunities.

Okay, you want a hard-sided suitcase. Walk through any airport today and the Away’s popularity is self-evident. But Away is not the only brand out there creating a minimalist, hard-shelled piece of luggage. Which of these new pieces of luggage—deliriously engineered to make millennials pull out their wallets—are actually worth your money?

Bags like these have a few traits in common. They’re nearly always made of polycarbonate (that is, synthetic resin), although the less expensive models may use acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) plastics or blends of ABS plastic and polycarbonate to form their shells. (Polycarbonate is lighter and more flexible and has higher impact resistance than ABS.) These bags usually have a clamshell design—that is, they split down the middle and close with a zipper or locking hinge—and they normally come with four wheels, rather than two.

It’s difficult to know the strength of polycarbonate shells, and it’s difficult to test them. We can assess the flexibility, relative weight, and composition of the material, and take into account the brand’s reputation, but that’s only enough to give us a rough idea of the limits of these suitcases. Our primary goal here, however, wasn’t to find the strongest luggage. Instead, we wanted to figure out which bag was the best to pack and the best to travel with, and which was ultimately worth the price.

We chose seven models that we felt best represented this category of minimalist luggage: the Away Carry-On , the Muji Adjustable Handle Suitcase (since discontinued), Arlo Skye’s The Frame Carry-On , Lojel’s Cubo Medium , Herschel’s Trade Luggage Carry-On (since discontinued), Calpak’s Ambeur Carry-On , and the AmazonBasics Hardside Spinner Luggage - 24-Inch . We compared the bags’ layouts, the comfort of their handles, and their looks, and then narrowed down the list to our top four candidates. I’ve traveled intermittently with the Away since 2016. Over the years, we had additional testers travel with models of the Away, the Muji, the AmazonBasics, and the Arlo Skye.

The Away Carry-On in front of a pink field, surrounded by a beige duffel, and some paper cacti.

I’ve tested the Away Carry-On for seven years now and have also lent the bag to several friends and frequent travelers to see how they would enjoy using it. The minimalism of the Away bag stands out among the other hard-sided suitcases we tested. There is (despite the impracticality) a peculiar comfort that comes from carrying a suitcase without external pockets. Everything you are traveling with is packed away in a single brick. The simplicity of the design, the matte texture of the plastic, the luxurious quality of the interior liner—all of it invites you to believe that there’s one less thing to worry about while you’re traveling.

The Away bag itself feels good in your hands, and its wheels are noticeably better than those of any other bag we tested, except for those on the Muji. Away formerly used YKK zippers, but as of 2023, the company is sourcing its zippers from a number of suppliers. We’ll keep an eye on how the zippers of newer Away bags perform. We also liked the compatible packing cubes sold by Away , which are shaped to fit perfectly into the bags’ beveled corners.

The Away’s polycarbonate feels similar to that used in more high-end suitcases, such as the Rimowa Cabin S, which is twice as expensive as the Away. The polycarbonate that Away uses is both strong and flexible. When we first started testing the Away, seven years ago, we found that flexibility to be a liability, especially on airport carpets—the Away tended to flex into itself and jam up its own wheels when we pushed it in front of us. But the company seems to have fixed that problem—I haven’t experienced it with any of the latest models of this suitcase.

Away makes a similar model of suitcase with an expandable zipper, The Carry-On Flex . For all intents and purposes, the Flex is the same overall bag as the standard Carry-On except for the expanding center zipper and the price (it’s $50 more; also, the Carry-On original does go on sale more frequently). Personally, I’m not a fan of expanding zippers on suitcases. It feels like potentially just one more thing to break. But some people may prefer having the extra flexibility.

Closeup of a wheel on the Away luggage.

The Away has the most pleasant online ordering experience. Pick your size, pick your color, and wait for your luggage to arrive at your door. If you want a set of luggage that nests within itself like a set of Russian dolls, Away’s regular Carry-On and The Medium  checked bag can both be stacked into  The Large  checked bag. If you need only a single carry-on but want a larger option, The Bigger Carry-On gives you 8 more liters of space than the Carry-On, which holds almost 40 liters.

Like many hard-sided cases we tested, the Away has an optional removable battery and external USB ports for charging. However, we still aren’t convinced that your luggage needs to have a battery inside. Portable batteries are cheap and come in a bunch of sizes , but they’re useful on a plane only when they’re close to you. The quick-release latch on the Away’s battery compartment made it the easiest to access the encased batteries that we tested. But it’s ultimately still just a fancy place to put a portable battery. (It’s also begging to be forgotten if your bag ends up getting gate-checked, which is unadvisable .) And without quick-charging USB-PD ports, the Away battery is also a step behind more-current models. In short, we think you’ll be happier buying a battery separately and keeping it in your pocket or your under-seat bag.

The Away is covered by a lifetime limited warranty that should cover you in the event of any large failure, such as the shell cracking or the zipper breaking. (Cosmetic damage isn’t included.)

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Our complaints about the Away mirror the complaints we’ve always had with hard-sided luggage, beyond any decreased durability. The clamshell design of all of these bags, which split down the middle and open into two parts, makes them frustrating to pack and unpack. Packing cubes help a bit, but after years of packing and unpacking soft-sided luggage with single lids, I definitely find a clamshell design to be more finicky. If you want or need a single compartment, you’ll prefer soft-sided luggage.

The Away Carry-On, open, showing the zip compartments on each side.

Ultimately, what I’ve found is that those who loved the bag went into testing it already wanting to love it. And those who disliked the bag resented it before they even held it. But if you’ve decided that the bag’s sleek aesthetic and simple, uncomplicated design will make you feel calmer while you travel, you probably won’t be disappointed.

Dimensions: 21.7 by 13.7 by 9 inches Weight: 7.6 pounds Capacity: 39.8 liters

We found it hard to square The Frame Carry-On , from Arlo Skye, with its price, which is $200 higher than the Away’s. It’s a decent piece of luggage, but at that price you could spend a bit more for one of our soft-sided luggage upgrade picks from Briggs & Riley , which would be a much better suitcase all around.

Although we liked the uncommon top-loading design of the Lojel Cubo Medium , the internal organization of the lid made packing it difficult. We also weren’t impressed by the Lojel’s zippered expansion system, which made the suitcase feel bulkier than our picks.

The Herschel Trade Luggage Carry-On is a little less expensive than the Away carry-on, but we preferred the Away’s more solid feel. If this bag were half the price, it would be a more competitive choice. (It’s now discontinued.)

The Calpak Ambeur Carry-on is fine but not great. We ultimately aren’t impressed with how the Calpak handled—it felt jittery on normal airport-floor surfaces.

The AmazonBasics Hardside Spinner Luggage - 24-Inch is a surprisingly good bag for just over $100. However, as with the Calpak bag, the weaker ABS plastic shell is just not as tough as a polycarbonate shell. We think it’s worth investing a little more in your luggage. Your suitcase will last longer and work better.

Is Away Carry-On Luggage Worth the Price?

Here's how the boutique brand's carry-on fared when Consumer Reports tested it—and when I stuffed it to the gills

When you shop through retailer links on our site, we may earn affiliate commissions. 100% of the fees we collect are used to support our nonprofit mission. Learn more .

Tobie walking away rolling the Away luggage behind her.

Since the Away Carry-On first entered the market in 2016, the trendy suitcase brand has seen some changes. Its color palette has expanded. The brand has introduced limited-edition products in partnership with celebrities and fashion designers . And recently Away debuted The Carry-On Flex line, a new, expandable version of its original hard-shell carry-on luggage.

But in my view, the biggest change to Away luggage has been the demise of its offer to let buyers use their new suitcase and then return it within 100 days if they weren’t happy—regardless of its condition. Travel to Timbuktu for three months and then return your not-quite-new bag for a refund? Not a thing anymore.

Still, Away’s far-lower price than other status bags like high-end German brand Rimowa gives it an edge with fashion-forward travelers. A basic piece of Away hard-shell carry-on luggage starts at $275, vs. Rimowa’s, which starts at $900. But even at that more moderate price, is the basic Away carry-on worth the money? CR’s test-based ratings, along with my experiment in extreme overpacking, will help you decide.

What’s Special About the Away Carry-On?

Feature-wise, not much. Away’s The Carry-On is a basic spinner suitcase without a lot of bells and whistles. For instance, it has only two internal storage pockets, vs. four in the Samsonite that’s our top-rated bag . But it does have a few nice qualities.

It still has a generous return period. The trial-by-travel return policy is now kaput, but you still have 100 days to return or exchange your unused Carry-On, an uncommonly long return window for a suitcase. During that 100 days, you can "gently test" your bag indoors, rolling it (preferably on carpet, Away says), and test-packing as many outfits as you can. If after that trial you don’t want it, you can print out a prepaid label, repackage the suitcase, and to send it to Away—or visit one of the brand’s 16 stores—for a refund for exchange.

You’re covered for life (with caveats). Away’s limited lifetime warranty is unusually good for a luggage brand. If you find defects or “any functional damage to the shell, wheels, handles, zippers, or anything else that impairs your use of the luggage,” Away promises to fix or replace it for you—or replace it with something comparable if that model is no longer available. And that promise is good forever, the company says. But as with most luggage warranties, the “limited” part of Away’s warranty carries exceptions. For instance, to put in a warranty claim, you must be the original owner or gift recipient. And the bag must be purchased from the Away website or one of its walk-in stores—not through a reseller.

You get a little luxury. Away covers the hinge between the bag’s clamshell sides with a leather panel, a nice touch. The included luggage tag also is leather, so it’s more likely to hold up over time than plastic. For $10 extra, Away will monogram your tag, and for $50 more it’ll do the same on the suitcase itself.

You can save your old plastic bag. The Carry-On includes a nice-sized washable fabric laundry bag with a zipper top (shown below), a major improvement from the old CVS bag I’d been using. Also standard are a TSA-approved, integrated lock and a pocket and USB port for an electronic-device battery charger. (Away used to provide a charger with its carry-on, but no more.)

How the Away Carry-On Did in Consumer Reports' Tests

The Away Carry-On earned a very good Overall Score in CR’s recent tests of 10 basic hard-shell spinner carry-ons from as many brands, at prices ranging from under $90 to more than $500. To be specific, it sits in the middle of the pack (all the suitcases received respectable ratings). In our battery of 31 different tests, the Away earned some raves and some “mehs”: It can take the hard knocks. Twice we swung a nasty-looking, 17-pound pointed metal hammer at the Away suitcase to see what would happen if, say, it accidentally fell from a plane’s overhead compartment onto an armrest. The Carry-On’s polycarbonate shell aced that and related tests, and earned an excellent score for impact resistance. It’s a brick house, for the most part. We inflated the Carry-On with an air bladder to simulate gross overstuffing. It held up well for this test and others gauging how well-built it was. So we gave its construction a commendable rating. However, the zipper did somewhat worse than average at keeping the suitcase contents dry when we laid the bag on its side and drenched it in a simulated rainstorm. (None of the tested luggage kept items completely dry, so the lesson here is to make sure you wrap vulnerable contents in plastic.) Dimension-wise, it’s a mixed bag. At 7.4 pounds, this Away suitcase is one of the heavier carry-ons we tested; the lightest is 5.7 pounds. Unlike several others in our ratings, the Carry-On is not expandable in its midsection, and its interior volume is not as large as the highest-rated models in our tests. But Away says it will fit in the overhead bins of most domestic and many foreign airlines, and our strict measurements confirm that’s probably true. It’s not the easiest bag to handle. The Away Carry-On was only middling in our tests of carrying and pulling, ergonomics and design, and general usability. In one test, for instance, our testers pulled the suitcases over a variety of surfaces. On cobblestones—which you’ll find in, say, old sections of Prague, London, and even Manhattan—the Away Carry On was more wobbly than most tested bags, despite an “eight wheel” design incorporating two thin wheels at each corner of its base.

It’s not so adaptable. The Away Carry-On’s telescoping handle, used for pulling it along in transit, has only two positions—vs. six for our top-rated Samsonite—so you can’t tailor its height as well as you might like. Its stationary top handle (shown below) also doesn’t adjust upward as some other brands’ handles do, so it might be tight for chubby fingers.

How Much Can the Away Carry-On Hold?

Away says the Carry-On is meant for about five days’ worth of clothes and accessories. And if you follow avid travelers’ advice , you know that a small, basic wardrobe—plus some travel packs of Woolite—can often hold you for many more days, and even weeks. It’s a commendable trait to be a minimalist traveler: carrying light, free of all but necessities.

But that’s not me. If I can cram more stuff in, I do it. Because, well, you never know.

I wanted to put the Carry-On through my own packing trial, which involved more stuff than our testers used. I was planning a late-summer, weeklong trip to northern California, which can be torrid or chilly, depending on where you are. So it was the perfect time to test how much this hardy bag could hold.

CR’s tests indicated it probably could meet the challenge. I had to be convinced.

The company’s included instructions suggest placing squishable stuff in the right shell, where it can be compressed by a flat panel that you can tighten with straps. (The panel has a handy pocket on top that I also put to use, as you’ll see farther down.) Bulky stuff that can’t be compressed goes in the left shell, under a mesh, zippered cover. Following best packing practices, I rolled as many items as I could (saving some delicate items to lay flat on top later).

So, Is the Away Carry-On Worth It?

I’d say yes. If you’re looking for a sturdy, basic, on-trend carry-on spinner that isn’t likely to be turned away at the gate because of size or overstuffing, you’ll find one in the Away Carry-On. If you’re creative with packing—for instance, trading bulky fabric toiletry bags for thin, utilitarian zipped plastic bags as I do—you can fit a fair amount into this suitcase’s little shell. To be sure, it’s not inexpensive. But given its resilience—and its generous warranty—the Carry-On probably will become unfashionable long before it becomes unusable.

If you prioritize finances and packing flexibility over fashion, you also can look to our ratings to find well-built, lower-priced bags with more convenience features, including expanding middles, more interior pockets, and handles with several telescoping options.

Here are some of the best Away sale deals:

away travel luggage store

By far one of the most popular Away bags, The Carry-On has thoughtful design features like in-bag compression, TSA-approved locks, and a fold-away laundry bag.

For those who want a little more packing space and take more cross-country flights than tiny jumper planes, the Bigger Carry-On is an excellent option. It still fits in the overhead of most major airlines and is ideal for longer trips where those extra outfits are a necessity. The deal also applies to Away's limited-edition colorways, including its chrome duo-tone design.

If you tend to take a lot of car trips and train trips where overhead bins aren't a concern but extra packing room is, then The Medium is the suitcase for you. Its lightweight shell and 360-degree spinner wheels makes taking your belongings on-the-go easy and comfortable.

This is a great easy duffle for weekend getaways. Made from durable nylon, it is available in several colors.

Great as an under-seat item or for daily commutes, this elegant leather bag is available in black and brown and features numerous pockets inside and out, space for an iPad, a detachable key clip, and a handy removable shoulder strap. Usually selling for close to $200, right now it's down to $136.

The Insider Packing Cubes from luggage brand Away help you store items efficiently in your suitcase without ruining the aesthetic.

Aluminum luggage is extra durable and, let's be honest, looks extra cool. Aluminum luggage is more expensive than traditional polycarbonate suitcases but will last you a lifetime. Away's Cyber Week sale is a good time to invest, since the discount will knock $125 off the usual price.

Forget picking up one of those flimsy paper tags last-minute at the airport. Ensure your luggage doesn't get lost and give it some personal flair with a leather luggage tag. You can even customize your tag by adding your initials in metallic gold or silver.

The Backpack is similar to The Daypack, but features even more room via a second zippered compartment. It also has room for a larger 15" laptop and features a trolley sleeve so you can easily slip it over the handle of your rolling luggage.

Great as a personal travel item or an everyday purse, this chic tote has tons of room inside to throw in all those accessories, or even a 15" laptop. It's made from a premium leather and also comes with a detachable strap. It comes in an array of color options from a classic black to a ruby red. For a longer version, check out Away's The Longitude Tote, both of which are a rare $120 through Cyber Monday.

If you prefer a soft-sided carry-on, then The Expandable option of the Bigger Carry-On will suit your tastes. This suitcase is made from a durable, water-resistant nylon and is designed to expand up to 1.75" for even more packing room. Plus, it also features a handy front pocket for storing a laptop or other accessories you want to easily access.

away travel luggage store

This cute little mini replica of the classic Carry-On is great for storing in-flight necessities like chapstick, lotion, or even small snacks. I like to throw it in my bag and then keep it in my seatback pocket during flights for easy access.

The Away luggage sale runs from now through March 30. Away hardly ever has sales so this is a rare opportunity to take advantage of discounts and save on suitcases and travel accessories.

Not quite everything. But many of the most popular items from carry-ons to checked bags to packing cubes and totes are included. The main thing is that not every single color is on sale, even for items that are included in the sale. The more flexible you are with your color options, the more likely you are to find what you're looking for on sale.

That depends entirely on your needs. If you tend to pack light and want to ensure your carry-on will fit in just about any overhead bin, The Carry-On is probably your best bet. However, if you do more trans-Atlantic flights, train travel, or road trips, and slim overhead space isn't as much of a concern as having more packing room, The Medium might be a good option. For those seeking a sturdy checked bag for long-haul trips, The Large is for you. And for those who prefer soft-sided carry-ons, The Expandable collection is worth a look.

I've personally owned The Carry-On and The Large for close to six years now. They've held up incredibly well over the years, and I still use them often. I can attest to their durability, packability, and quality. Not to mention the chic look and eye-catching color options. Additionally, after recently testing The Carry-On: The Aluminum Edition , I was thoroughly impressed with this hardy option and even named it the best aluminum carry-on in our guide to the best carry-ons .

Away Luggage Is Up to 45% Off — Shop the 12 Best Deals From the After-Christmas Sale

Carry-ons, checked suitcases, travel bags, and more are starting at $20.

away travel luggage store

Travel + Leisure / Madison Woiten

It’s time to invest in some luggage that’ll stick with you. I'm talking about Away luggage . As a huge fan of the brand (I’ve had the first iteration of the Away Carry-on since 2015, and it’s still going strong), I’ve been patiently waiting with bated breath for its end-of-year deals to drop. And, I'm happy to report that the Away after-Christmas sale did not disappoint. Right now, travelers can score up to 45 percent off on select Away suitcases, travel bags, and accessories.

Whether you’re looking for a new carry-on, a backpacking-friendly duffel, or better packing organizers to maximize space, these Away holiday deals will make you the most efficient person at the airport, train station, hotel lobby — you get the gist. Wanderlust is always real this time of year, so make sure that your travel equipment can keep up. And, don't waste any time adding these finds to your cart because they won't stay on sale for much longer.

The Carry-On Flex

All Away suitcases are 20 percent off until tonight at midnight ET. So, for a limited time, you can save big on the super-popular Flex Carry-On. With an expandable zipper that gives you extra space when you need it, it’s an award-winning design that’s perfect for those inexplicable shopping trips or stashing away that oversized coat. Don't need the additional packing room? You can also get the original Away Carry-on and Bigger Carry-on suitcases on sale.

The Large Flex

Sometimes, you need to check a bag — so make sure it's a sturdy, reliable, and spacious one like the Large Flex (which is a rare 20 percent off). Like its carry-on counterpart, its expandable zipper guarantees extra packing space (up to 1.75 inches' worth) and the 29-inch suitcase's hard-shell exterior will endure any drops, scrapes, and spills from the baggage carousel. Need something that's bigger than the Carry-On Flex but smaller than the Large Flex? Add the 26-inch Medium Flex to your cart while it's also 20 percent off.

The Everywhere Bag

To say that I’m in love with this bag is an understatement. It performs at its best as a personal item, with a trolley sleeve for easy placement over your luggage handles, but can also be used as a commuter bag or gym bag. With a full wraparound zip opening, it can basically split open for easy access to the main compartment, which can hold a jaw-dropping amount of stuff. With a detachable padded shoulder strap, it’s easy to cart around, while the top handles are perfectly-sized for shoulder wear — even if you're wearing a puffy jacket. It also features a laptop pocket and is water-resistant. Basically, it’s perfect. And it’s on sale. Need I say more?

The Insider Packing Cubes

If you haven’t been converted to packing cubes, consider this your time. They'll change your packing game — nay, your life . Trust me. They compress and organize everything, and can help you maximize your suitcase space while also making it super easy to unpack. With mesh panels to easily see what’s what, they’re perfectly designed for your Away luggage. Three colors are on sale, so take your pick.

The Large Toiletry Bag

This toiletry bag will fit everything that you need and keep it structured so it will fit great in the on-going Tetris game that exists in your carry-on or personal item. With an exterior zip pocket, you can easily grab the items that you’ll need on the plane (like disinfectant wipes or hand lotion), while the interior compartments keep you organized and ready to beautify once you land.

The Jewelry Box

Nothing’s worse than showing up with your necklaces, earrings, and bracelets jumbled, knotted, or bent. Avoid the hassle with this handy travel jewelry box that features multiple organizational compartments for your essentials. It's complete with room for four pairs of earrings, a padded cord for rings and bigger earrings, clasps and slip pockets for necklaces, and a big main compartment for everything else. Avoid the tangles and keep your investments and trendy baubles safe and cute.

The Passport Wallet

Ditch your bulky wallet when traveling for this easy-access passport wallet that has a slip pocket so you can quickly grab travel documents, along with four interior card slots for your ID, credit cards, and any other essentials. Made with smooth leather, it’s super slim and fits great in purses and backpacks, including sling bags.

The Everywhere Zip Backpack

Perfect for trips where you’ll need a backpack on the ground, this one can be used as a personal item (thanks to its pass-through trolley sleeve) or packed flat in your carry-on. It includes a padded laptop pocket with a magnetic locking zipper for security, and has padded shoulder straps for even more comfort. Plus, other thoughtful features that you'll find come in handy when you're on the go: a water bottle pocket, an external back hidden zip pocket for your passport, and an extended clamshell opening for easy access to the main compartment. It’s also just super sleek and screams, “I have my life together.”

The Tech Case

Don’t let tangled chargers and cords wreak havoc on your personal bag. This tech case is ideal for storing your essentials — chargers, Apple AirPods, cables, etc. — and they'll be perfectly organized and at the ready. Coming in three colors, it has a spacious bottom mesh compartment that can function as a catch-all for all of your random tech accessories, like portable chargers or streaming sticks.

The Shoe Cube

If you’re one of those people who can’t stand your shoes touching your clothes in your suitcase, this game-changing travel accessory is for you. It can hold two pairs of shoes, and comes in a small and large size. It’s made from sturdy and flexible water-resistant nylon with a collapsible divider, and even features a handle for easy transport and hanging.

The Packable Sling Bag

The perfect traveling companion, this packable sling bag made from recyclable materials holds everything that you’ll need while exploring (or navigating an airport) — keys, wallet, sunscreen, sunglasses, and more. With the option to pack it down to a zip pouch or expand it and wear it around your waist or as a sling, it’s the ideal addition to your gear collection.

The Packable Carry-All

This is my favorite for keeping in my carry-on as a just-in-case item when I know I won't have luggage space to spare on my returning flight. It can be expanded to fit a ton of stuff, and has a trolley pass-through sleeve so you can slide it over your suitcase handle. Outside of flying, it can be used as a shopping bag, beach bag, picnic bag — basically, it’s a utility bag that pays for itself with how much use you'll get out of it.

All about Away luggage

If you're new to Away, here are some key things to know about the brand.

Away luggage design and features

Away suitcases generally come well-equipped. Currently, the brand offers two materials: Polycarbonate and aluminum . Away makes a few travel bags and backpacks out of water-resistant nylon.

The polycarbonate suitcases come in multiple core color options and limited-edition seasonal colors. The aluminum model is offered in silver, rose gold and black.

Away luggage shipping and returns

Away offers free UPS Ground on all orders (suitcases and accessories) and returns within the contiguous United States. The company also offers rush shipping for an additional fee. According to our shopper, the luggage ships out fast. "Shipped on the 13th, arrived on the 14th fast," she noted.

While ultra-fast shipping might be a great perk for most people, it complicates canceling your order or changing your shipping address. "Once you hit the buy button, there really is no going back," said our shopper, who struggled to get in touch with customer service to intercept the suitcase. "There is zero wiggle room. No chat option, no easy way to change an address if you accidentally got it wrong. And because items ship so fast, there's a good chance that if you get the address wrong you won't be able to change it in time." So do that double-check before you hit the buy button!

"Our team moves quickly to get your order shipped out ASAP, which means that we aren't able to cancel or make any changes to an order once it's been placed," explains Away in the Q & A section of the website. "If you're traveling soon, we recommend that you place a new order for the color or size you would prefer, and we can assist with a return of the original order."

Away offers a 100-day trial period for all luggage. If you aren't happy with your purchase, returns are accepted for items within the warranty period with the exception of personalized items. All you need to do is fill out a  return request  to start the process. You will be refunded the full amount of your order, minus any shipping charges. In order to exchange an item, send your original order back as a return and place a new order online.

Away luggage warranty

Away suitcases are guaranteed by a  limited-lifetime warranty  covering any functional damage to the shell, wheels, handles, zippers or anything else that impairs your use of the luggage. The battery is covered by a two-year warranty, while other bags and accessories come with a limited one-year warranty, offering repair or replacement.

Made the adult decision to go ahead and purchase my first Away carry-on luggage since I am trying my best to buy things of high quality. Came to The Domain to feel, see, and decide what to get from Away after visiting other competitors who are comparable in price but worlds away from quality, style, and uniqueness of Away's products. Came in on a Sunday at the shop was super quiet and had plenty of sales folks ready to help. My partner and I spent about 25 minutes taking down luggage, opening and unzipping every compartment and really investigating each nook and cranny of each type of luggage options they had. I appreciated all of them being kind and patient with us as we made our decision. Parking was super easy to find as we were able to snag a spot right in front of the shop. The air conditioning was pumping in here as it was a very warm Texas Fall day when we walked in. Friendly smiles all around and when we finally made our decision (that included color, additional customizations, etc) the sales folks were kind and brought out our new luggage all wrapped up in the iconic cotton bag. Appreciate all the help and information as we made our grown-up decision to get great, durable, and high-quality luggage that will literally last us forever.

Let's have examples but never have product. This is frustrating to come in hoping they carry an item and the answer always seems to be out of stock. I get that Tesla is a showroom but Away needs to call it a showroom as well - they never have what's shown! Wasted a drive to the domain yuck!

Poor customer service. Walked in planning to buy a backpack, a lady with long hair was just standing so i asked a question. She answered me but then called another lady to answer my other question and turned away. If she was working on another customer, she should have said something . I took pics of the bag and left. Every customer that walks in your store should be treated fairly .

Photo of Amelia P.

I am an Away consumer and have a few suitcases and a backpack. Was visiting Austin when my Away backpack zipper split open and broke completely. Went to this location with the goal of buying a new one. The staff were so rude and not one person tried to help me. Walked out and ended up buying not one but two Baggolinis who have a similar design, texture, and look. Spent $250 on those bags vs the replacement backpack which was about the same price. Not sure I believe in the brand's customer service. And they don't warranty their backpacks, which is disappointing. Skip this store.

I used to be a consultant and traveled for work about 40+ weeks out of the year. I eventually refined my carry-on strategies so I now no longer ever check a bag. My former ebags hardside spinner broke after 3 years and I spent a few days finding an upgraded replacement. The AWAY carryon has been the clear winner. Besides looking amazing with its matte finish, the small perks integrated into the bag (additional small items zip pouch, compression mat, laundry bag, execrable battery), it has also nailed down the fundamentals with handle length and portability (4-wheeler, very smooth). Unfortunately my original order online was actually an error (they sent wrong color), I was able to swap it out in the store without any issues. Service was amazingly helpful and I trust i can contact support should any issues happen down the line.

I'm in love with my Away carry on, and I'm equally impressed with the customer service they offer. I originally wanted the bigger carry on in Sky, but by the time I decided to get one, they had already discontinued the color and the Away store only had the regular carry on size. Two months later I visited the Away store and see that they have the exact size and color I wanted and since I was still within my 100 days, decided to trade. Unfortunately, three days later when I brought in my old luggage to trade, they had already sold out. Ivy offered to take my information in case they somehow received any other ones. I gave my information but didn't want to get my hopes up but a few days later Ivy called and was able to hold the bigger carry on for me until I was able to come in!

Great place, friendly service, and good selections There are many good options for men as well! Great shoe options too!

Very durable! This is our Away luggage's second year and I purposely waited to write a review just to see how it holds up for two years. I got it as part of our wedding gifts. I got two "The Bigger Carry On" in dark blue and we love it! When it get's scruffed up, just wipe with soapy water or a gentle cleaner. Some scratches don't come off as easily but the luggage stays pretty anyways, It just gives it some character! In a flight going to Boston, Delta air stopped us and asked us to unscrew the battery and separate it from the clothes. Definitely an inconvenience! Good news is, AWAY at the Domain made us an appointment to change up the battery system to an easily ejected kind so we don't have to scramble through for a Phillips screw driver. It's a 15 minute service each luggage and it's free! While there, I'm gonna check out their new stuff!

Photo of Cole T.

Tried to stop in to buy some luggage with my partner. The number of associates (3) outnumbered the number of customers (1) and we were told to leave because they were over capacity. Maybe if you want to move merchandise, you'll have fewer associates so more than one person can come in to shop at a time. Away has competitors now and I will patronize one of those. Ridiculous. I am not an anti-masker or against social distancing measures at all, simply astounded by poor planning that leaves people unable to shop in a mostly empty store.

I needed a new suitcase ASAP and didn't have time to wait for an online order to arrive, so I made a last minute trip to Away. Hannah and Hannah Rose were SO incredibly helpful, quick to assist, answer questions, and provided great recommendations. The bags are excellent, and having them so quickly customized was an added bonus.

As you start planning your next trip abroad, looking into hotels, flights and tourist attractions, don't forget that the key to a smooth travel experience is a great piece of luggage. When you're traveling internationally, it's especially important to bring a suitcase that complies with airline restrictions, is comfortable to carry or roll throughout your journey and has plenty of room for all of your belongings and your souvenirs for the trip home.

This top-performing suitcase from our best overall luggage brand Samsonite has repeatedly stood out in the Textiles Lab's and our consumers' tests and is priced under $200 — an incredible value. The hardside carry-on is made of polypropylene and weighs in at just 6.5 pounds, which is one of the lightest bags we've tested, so it won't eat too much into the lower weight restrictions set by many international airlines.

I was impressed by how easy it was to lift and roll the bag around, even when filled with our standard packing load. Despite the lightweight design, this carry-on is spacious with a butterfly-opening, unfolding into two primary compartments for easy packing, and there's an additional one inch of expandable storage with the pull of a zipper.

During our Lab evaluations, we liked how easy it was to pull the bag through our luggage obstacle course. While some testers said the telescopic handle felt a bit loose, the suitcase earned high scores for maneuverability, with testers sharing feedback including "very smooth rolling" and "the wheels moved really well." The material was more prone to scratching than some others we evaluated, but the suitcase proved to be durable overall in our drop tests, resisting major damage.

Listed dimensions: 21.25" x 15.25" x 10" | Weight: 6.5 lbs | Material: Hardside polypropylene | Expandable: Yes | Returns: Within 30 days, unused

With more than 34,000 five-star ratings, t his best-selling suitcase from Amazon Basics is loved by both real users and our consumer testers who say it's worth every penny. Made of lightweight ABS plastic, the hardside suitcase isn't quite as durable as those made of polycarbonate, but the material helps to keep the cost low — under $100 — so I recommend it for someone shopping on a budget.

During our Textiles Lab evaluations for durability, there were some noticeable markings in our scratch tests, but we were impressed by how well the bag maintained its shape after being released repeatedly from our drop tester. Amazon reviewers who regularly use the suitcases say they hold up over time, as well.

When our consumer testers rolled the suitcase through our obstacle course, they were wowed by how smooth the wheels were, with one describing the bag as "very easy to move." We gave the carry-on high scores for packability, as we were able to pack our standard load of belongings (clothing, accessories and toiletries) for a short trip inside with room to spare. Plus, there are interior zippered mesh pockets for easy organization, and the bag expands up to one extra inch for additional packing space.

Listed dimensions: 22" x 14.9" x 10" | Weight: 7.3 lbs | Material: Hardside ABS plastic | Expandable: Yes | Returns: Within 30 days, unused

One of the most popular suitcases on the market, Away's standard carry-on is definitely worth the hype . The bag is available in 11 colors, including on-trend options like green and red, along with neutral hues like gray and black.

Not only is the suitcase simple and stylish from the outside, it's also full of functional features inside to make packing for your next international trip a breeze. The bag unfolds into two separate primary compartments to fit all of your things: one fully zippered side and one with adjustable compression straps, and there are mesh pockets to stash smaller items.

Consumer testers and GH analysts alike love to travel with the Away carry-on, including one who shared, "It fit all of the clothes I needed for a long weekend. It rolled really easily and was light enough to pop in and out of the overhead bin." Testers said the telescopic handle felt flimsier than others they tried, but they were impressed with the bag overall, saying that it was easy to maneuver and roll over different types of flooring, including wood, carpet and tile. And it looked great after our drop and scratch tests, showing no major signs of damage or dents.

Briggs & Riley 31-inch Baseline Extra Large Expandable Spinner

The innovative design details of this softside checked bag from Briggs & Riley help to simplify packing for extended trips abroad. The bag features a unique push-button expansion system unlike any other we've evaluated , which allows you to easily expand the bag, fill it with everything you'll need and then compress it back down to its standard size.

One tester who was impressed with the amount of space in the carry-on version of the bag shared, "It fit clothing and accessories for two people for a seven-day summer vacation." And this checked bag offers more than double the packing capacity. Other innovative features include a built-in trifold garment folder for formal attire and reinforced corners for added protection.

At 15.6 pounds, the suitcase does weigh more than other models we've evaluated, but it is made with a nylon material that resisted wear and tear when I tested it in our abrasion machine. It also earned top marks in our latest round of drop testing. Along with performing well for durability, the suitcase received high scores for maneuverability, with smooth wheels and a sturdy telescopic handle.

Listed dimensions: 31" x 22" x 13.8" | Weight: 15.6 lbs | Material: Softside nylon | Expandable: Yes | Returns: Within 30 days, unused

Rolling a bag through the airport has never been easier than it is with July's classic luggage , including this spacious checked suitcase and its popular carry-on bags . One GH analyst who took the checked bag on a vacation abroad said, "I've never used a suitcase with wheels this smooth." I've personally traveled with luggage from the brand and was blown away by how effortless it was to roll the suitcases, even over carpet and concrete sidewalks.

The telescopic handle technically locks at 20 different heights to prevent it from falling down on its own, and most testers appreciated the slanted grip on the handle, sharing that it was comfortable to hold and easy to maneuver with.

Made with a polycarbonate shell, the suitcase is lightweight and durable, and the corners are reinforced with aluminum bumpers for an added level of protection. The bag held up well after being released repeatedly from our drop tester, but testers noted marks and scuffs on the surface after taking the bag on just one trip.

It boasts 80 liters of packing space and features one fully zippered compartment and one open compartment with a compression panel and Y-strap for security. Even more, it weighs just 8.3 pounds, which is similar to many of the carry-on sized bags we evaluate.

Listed dimensions: 26" x 18.75" x 11" | Weight: 8.3 lbs | Material: Hardside polycarbonate with aluminum corners | Expandable: No | Returns: Within 100 days, unused

Travelpro luggage was created by a pilot who wanted to make bags specifically for other pilots and airline crewmembers who were always on the go. The result is a collection of highly durable, quality suitcases including the popular Platinum Elite medium checked suitcase.

Built to last, the luggage is made of heavyweight nylon material that performed well when I tested it for abrasion resistance. When I released the bag repeatedly from our drop tester, it showed no signs of damage or dents. Our testers also gave the suitcase high scores for ease of use and appreciated the sturdy feel of the telescopic handle. The suitcase does have a more traditional look, though, which some testers described as "old-fashioned," sharing that they wished it were sleeker.

Full of thoughtful and functional features, the suitcase makes packing and traveling a breeze. The bag can be unzipped to reveal one large packing compartment with compression panels that secure your belongings in place, a removable wet bag for toiletries, a large mesh zippered pocket in the lid for breathable storage and a built-in suiter to help keep more formal clothes in tip-top shape. To prevent the suitcase from tipping over when it's full, it's also designed with a unique tapered expansion system, so the bag is narrower at the top and broader at the bottom.

While some softside luggage is bulky and pricey, this Helium DLX carry-on from Delsey is lightweight, as the name implies, and it's available for a great value. The polyester material isn't quite as durable or substantial as nylon styles we've tested, but the brand's polyester fabric has performed well overall in our abrasion tests without major wear.

Two external zippered pockets allow for easy access to travel essentials like your phone and ID, so you won't have to hold up the TSA line while scouring through your bag. While the bag unzips to expose only one main compartment for packing, it's equipped with a removable bi-fold organizer and expands by two inches for additional room. One tester said, "I love the pockets." Plus, the inner lining can be fully unzipped and removed for easy cleaning.

I personally carry luggage from Delsey and love the smooth wheels and sturdy telescopic handle, and our testers who tried Delsey's luggage found the handle to be comfortable to grip and use. However, they said the bags were more difficult to maneuver through our obstacle course than others they tested.

Listed dimensions: 12" x 17.75" x 28" | Weight: 8.4 lbs | Material: Softside polyester | Expandable: Yes | Returns: Within 30 days, unused

A rolling duffel like this one from L.L.Bean is ideal for longer adventures abroad or for overpackers like me. The duffel isn't as structured as standard suitcases, meaning you can compress it and slide it under your bed or in a closet if you're pressed for storage space — and on the other hand, you can really fill it to the brim when you're packing. Just be careful that you're not stuffing it too much because it can be easy to exceed an airline's weight restrictions.

One GH analyst who loves to travel with this bag said that it's one of her go-to picks for family vacations. With just two wheels, our analyst said it's a little more cumbersome to maneuver than a spinner suitcase, but you also have the option to carry the bag with the padded strap.

The bag has a wide opening for easy access to everything you need inside, and outer compression straps keep everything in place. Made of durable polyester material with a reinforced base, the duffel lasts for years and years without signs of wear, according to our analyst. Plus, it's water-resistant inside and out — perfect for inevitable leaks or wet weather. If you're looking for something smaller, the brand carries a variety of sizes to meet your travel needs.

Listed dimensions: 14" x 17.25" x 32.5" | Weight: 8.8 lbs | Material: Softside polyester | Expandable: No | Returns: Within 1 year

When we evaluated this bag in the Textiles Lab, we were amazed by just how much we could fit inside during our packing tests. Not only did it beat out other travel backpacks we tested, it also outperformed some of our carry-ons because of its spacious interior .

The backpack has a suitcase-style opening and fully unzips to expose a highly organized interior jam-packed with zippered mesh pockets for all of your belongings. It also features a padded laptop sleeve that fits up to a 17-inch computer.

Made of recycled nylon and polyester, the bag is durable and water-resistant. When I tested it for abrasion resistance in the Lab, there were no visible signs of wear. Details like a sternum strap, waist belt and padded mesh provide comfort and support. With backpack straps that tuck neatly inside the back of the bag and carrying straps on all sides, you can easily grab it to lift into an overhead bin.

Some online reviewers wished it was equipped with a water bottle holder and said the zippers can be finicky, but we didn't have issues with them in the Lab.

a backpack from cotopaxi unzipped and opened

Able to hold everything you need for a weekend getaway, this weekender from Calpak was the top performer in our Textiles Lab tests. Not only is the bag totally on-trend, thanks to the puffy padded design and fashionable color options, it's also full of functional features . One tester who used it as her personal item on a long trip said, "This bag fits everything I need and more!"

A GH analyst who used the bag added, "I appreciate the well-organized interior," which includes several zippered pockets and elastic storage. Outside, there's a separate shoe compartment, additional zippered pockets and a water bottle holder. Altogether, there are nine pockets, and the spacious bag aced our packing tests.

If you're pairing it with Calpak's popular luggage , this bag has a trolley sleeve that slides right over the telescopic handle of your suitcase. One tester noted that the stitching that secured the sleeve in place started unraveling a bit after just one use. The bag is made of a smooth polyester material that's comfortable to carry and water-resistant. A tester said, "It poured while I was traveling and everything inside this bag stayed perfectly dry."

Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler 40L Duffel Bag

Cargo Hauler 40L Duffel Bag

This convertible duffel from Eagle Creek is the perfect adventure travel companion. The bag is durable, combining polyester and nylon for a water-resistant material that also held up well when tested for abrasion resistance . One GH analyst who travels with this duffel said that it still looks great after years of regular rough and tough use.

It's structured and maintains its shape for easy packing, but the duffel can be compressed to bring inside of your suitcase as an extra bag or for compact storage at home. According to our testers and GH analyst, the zippers have large pull tabs that are easy to use, and, according to the brand, they're covered in water-resistant strips for the ultimate protection in wet weather.

The duffel features a reinforced top handle and grab handles along the sides for carrying, and there are adjustable backpack straps for hands-free use that can be connected for an additional carrying strap or tucked inside the bag. Some online reviewers said the backpack straps are on the thinner side and weren't as comfortable as other traditional travel backpacks, but they appreciated the convenient option.

<p><strong>Brand:</strong> The maker is crucial in all luxury—and that especially includes wallets. Because what you’re buying isn’t just an item, but the cachet behind the name. Companies try their damndest to extol their histories and clout, courting customers into their world. They want you to be inhabitants, and a great entryway is through small leather goods. </p><p><strong>Material: </strong>Leather is the standard material used for luxury wallets, the best is sourced from Italian tanneries and produced meticulously by master craftsmen—or at least overseen by them. And of course there are a variety of leather treatments: smooth calf, pebbled, croc-effect, saffiano, and woven being a few. </p><p><strong>Size: </strong>Whatever floats your boat. Just make sure your wallet is able to fit into your pocket or wherever you want to hold it. </p>

Tips for Buying Underseat Luggage

Check the Bag Size - When shopping for under-seat luggage, measuring the bag's size first is crucial. Always take a moment to review the dimensions provided in the product description. Despite bags being advertised as airline-approved, our experience suggests it's best to double-check. Since airlines vary in their under-seat space allowances, confirming with them directly is a smart strategy.

Consider Wheeled vs. Tote Bags - Ponder over the choice between a wheeled bag and a tote. For regular travelers, a wheeled under-seat bag, whether it has two or four wheels, can greatly ease your journey through bustling airports. Tote bags, devoid of wheels, are lighter and thus more suited for short trips by car or train, where you're not as restricted by space constraints. Our tests revealed that both wheeled and tote bags, particularly those with rear straps for easy attachment to larger luggage, significantly streamline carrying your under seat item through airports.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size luggage can fit under your seat?

So, every airline has its own idea of under-seat space, but guess what? The max is usually 18 inches by 14 inches by 8 inches. But, we found a sweet spot for size: 16 x 14 x 9 inches. That's our go-to for testing. Most under-the-seat bags hover around these dimensions, but how chunky your bag ends up really depends on how much you stuff it.

How much can an underseat suitcase fit?

In our evaluations, we checked how much each bag could carry by packing it with essentials: two days' worth of outfits, a laptop, and a toiletry kit. Typically, an underseat suitcase is ideal for packing lightly, covering just about a weekend's needs. However, the actual capacity might fluctuate based on what kind of clothing and gadgets you decide to pack.

And we only recommend the things we would get with our own money.
