This trek will be a great choice for beginners as it is an easy one day trek which can be covered in 3-4 hours.

During monsoon, the fort gets covered in the fog and mist which looks magical. This simple, scenic and pleasant trek is one of the best monsoon treks near Pune and Mumbai.

There is another fort named Visapur fort nearby which is larger than Lohagad. Both, Lohagad fort trek and Visapur fort trek, can be done in a single day.

A scenic & pleasant journey -Lohagad fort trek

You have to walk through 4 doors to enter the Lohagad fort. At first, there will be ‘Ganesh Darvaja’ then the ‘Narayan Darvaja’. You will get to see two warehouses. Then there is ancient ‘Hanuman Darvaja’ and finally entering through the ‘Maha Darvaja’ you will reach on the top of the fort.

One of the major landmarks of the Lohagad fort is the old ‘Darga’ (Mosque). You will see remnants of the court besides it. There is also a historical structure called ‘Laxmi Kothi’. You will also see cannons in front of ‘Laxmi Kothi’.

The aerial view of the fort looks like a scorpion’s tail. This extended part of the hill is called ‘Vinchu Kada’. It is well fortified and will take 15-20 minutes to reach at the very end. If you want to get a rousing 360-degree view of the surrounding, you got to visit the place.

Vinchu Kada at Lohagad fort

The history of Lohagad goes back to the period of Satvahana. Several other dynasties such as Rashtrakutas, Yadavas, Bahamanis, Chalukyas, etc. had a hold on this mighty fort.

This fort was under the Maratha Empire for most of the time. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj surrendered it to the Mughals by the treaty of Purandar in 1665. He recaptured the fort in 1670 and used it to keep the loot from Surat.

In Marathi language, Lohagad means Iron fort and it stands tall to its name.

In Peshwa time, Nana Phadnavis was living on this fort for some time. They built many structures on the fort such as a big tank and step-well in his period.

How to reach Lohagad

By private vehicle

If you are coming from Mumbai then you can come to Lonavala and from here head towards the Dudhivare Khind. It will take around 1 hour from Lonavala to reach the Lohagadvadi base village.

There is well-constructed road available till the base of the Lohagad fort.

In rainy days, there will be huge traffic due to single lane. If you are going in the monsoon, I will recommend you to park your vehicle at Bhaja village and start your trail from there.

Although there is a well-constructed road, there are many rough patches and steep turns. I have seen many experienced drivers struggling at those patches.

There are 2 different routes available from Pune. You have to take old Mumbai – Pune highway and head towards Lonavala. Just before the Lonavala, you will reach Malavli village. Take a left and then there will be a 6 km drive till the base. You can park your vehicle at Malavli village and start the trail from there.

Another route is from Paud- Kolvan and Lohagad fort. This route is not that popular and you need to drive across Pawna Lake.

There is no direct bus service available to Lohagad. You need to catch a bus till Lonavala. From here you can hire a cab to Lohagad.

The road from Lonavala to Lohagad is very scenic and passes through the famous Dudhivare Khind.

Dudhivare Khind

The nearest railway station to Lohagad fort is Lonavala railway station which is around 13 km away from Lohagad. You can take a suburban train from Lonavala till the Malavli stop if you are coming from Mumbai.

There are many suburban trains available from Pune to Lonavala. You can get off the train at Malavli station. The fort is around 6 km away from Malavli.

You can take a shared auto or taxi from here till the base. Most of the trekkers start the trail from the station itself. There is a well-constructed road from the station to the base of the fort.

There two different routes available to reach till the base of the fort. The trail from Malavli railway station is quite popular and you can cover Bhaja caves, Visapur fort and Lohagad fort in a day.

The total distance you need to cover is around 6km from Malavli station to Lohagad. In 2-3 hours, you will reach the base of the fort.

The second route is from Lonavala side. This route will take you through amazing Dudhivare Khind.

Both the roads are very scenic and end up at Lohagadwadi which is a base village for the Lohagad fort trek. From here, there are well-constructed steps to reach the top of the fort. It will take roughly 45 minutes to reach the top.

There are many historical structures, temples and Darga on the top.

One of the major highlights on the Lohagad fort, Darga (Mosque)

To go to the Vinchu Kada you need to walk towards the North-west side of the fort. In around 15 minutes you will reach the mighty Vinchu Kada.

Most of the trekkers wander only at the gate and around the temple, but the main attraction on Lohagad is Vinchu Kada and you must explore it if you want to enjoy the real beauty of the Lohagad.

You can visit the Lohagad round the year. But the best time to visit the fort is in monsoon. Lohagad fort trek is magical in monsoon days.

You will come across many waterfalls and will get splendid views as the fort is covered in the fog and mist. Don’t forget to enjoy the reverse waterfall on the fort.

Remember, there will be a huge crowd on rainy days. Avoid weekends if you don’t want to wait in a queue to climb the fort.

There are many food stalls available at the base of the fort. You will get snacks, water bottles and delicious Maharashtrian Thalis.

Camping is not allowed on the Lohagad fort. They close the doors of the fort in the late evening.

You can camp near Pawna Lake. There are many lake camping organizers available.

If you want to explore the surrounding region then stay at a hotel in Lonavala. There are many worth seeing places in the area.

Bhaja caves, Lonavala

There is a total of 22 ancient rock-cut caves and stupas built in the 2nd century and used by the Buddhist Monks. This place is very peaceful and far away from urbanization.

To go to this place you need to take a little detour from Bhaje waterfall. It’s around half km away from the main trail. It almost takes a half hour or so.

First view of Visapur fort

A small range connects Visapur Fort and Lohagad and divides the basins of the Indrayani River and Pavana River.

Visapur Fort is larger compared to Lohagad. You can visit both the forts in a single day.

During the Lohagad fort trek, you will come across the ‘Gaimukh Khind’. The left side route will take you to the Visapur Fort.

The road is well marked so there will not be any confusion.

Well, it’s always good if you start the trek as early as possible.

There are many worth seeing places on this trail. You can visit Bhaja caves by taking a little diversion from Bhaje Waterfall. It will take a maximum of an hour.

Bhaje waterfall during the Lohagad fort trek

After walking for some time you will come across ‘Gaimukh Khind’. Take a left from here and head towards the Visapur Fort. In the monsoon days, there is water flowing down from the steps and the view is stunning.

You can explore the fort and after spending an hour or so you can again come back and head towards the Lohagad Fort. This detour will take around 2 hours.

After reaching to the base of the Lohagad fort, take a rest for a while. Have your meal and then climbing around 350 rock steps you will reach the top of the Lohagad.

Precautions for Lohagad fort trek

You are going to come across our ancestors (thanks to Mr Darwin) during the trail. Yeah, monkeys. You don’t want the monkeys to steal your food, so avoid carrying any food or snacks in your hand. Beware of the monkeys. Yes, I mean it. Haha!

Wear a pair of good quality shoes, as there is lots of walking involved in this trail.

You will come across many waterfalls during the trail. The most famous one is Bhaje waterfall. And I will recommend you to enjoy the waterfall from a distance.

There are no protective bars at the edge of the cliffs. So stay away from the edge. The wind is so strong during the monsoon and it may cause an accident.

Tip for you:

If you are coming by train then there will be a huge crowd and you might not get a place to even stand up in the train.

What you can do is, get on the train which is heading towards the Lonavala from Pune. The same local will come back again to Pune, so you need not be worried about the seat. Thank me later!!

Lohagad fort trek is one of the best one-day treks near Pune and Mumbai . The trail is simple and straight forward. If you are looking for a quick escape from the busy city life then head towards the Lohagad fort. The complete trail is a long walk till the base of the fort. After climbing well-constructed steps, you will reach the top of the fort.

Koraigad Fort trek near Lonavala is a perfect place for a one-day getaway. It is a beautiful hill fort which was built-in by the prominent Maratha ruler, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Located around 20 km away from Lonavala, the fort houses a couple of refreshing and clean ponds that offer a picturesque view along with cool breeze and fog during monsoons. With a relaxing sight of the floating clouds, Koraigad Fort monsoon trek is one of the best idyllic destinations to escape from the hustle-bustle of city life.

Situated at an elevation of about 3000 feet from the sea level, Koraigad fort was named after goddess Koraidevi. Koraidevi Temple has been recently renovated and has a 3 feet high Deepmala. While visiting the fort, one can see two other temples dedicated to Lords Vishnu and Shiva. There are two lakes on the top of the fort and several ruins of older structures that still exist within the fort. Monsoon trek to Koraigad is a great trek for beginners as it is a short and an easy 6 km trek, which leaves ample time for fun activities along the way. Near the fort, there is a flight of about 500 steps set out to reach the fort from and to Pethshahpur village.

One thing that trekkers cannot afford to miss out on this journey is an exquisite view of the Aamby Valley. In addition, there is a pit-stop on the way that offers the striking view of the Aamby Valley and its two artificial lakes. As it is a short trek, one can enjoy a refreshing dip in the pond. While passing through the lush green forest, trekkers can find several colourful butterflies and beautiful birds whose melodious voices are so deep that the entire valley seems like echoing with the songs. The trail features stone-cut steps leading up to the Koraigad Fort, which has a large, flat top, with the ramparts completely intact. The fort houses sturdy walls and massive gates and some ancient cannons are still lying in the fort. After discovering about the historical and religious significance of the forts and temples, one can take several pictures with their friends and family members, and also play games to have a fun time. Notably, the place is pretty good for camping as well due to plenty of open space in and around the fort. However, people usually avoid night stay at the top and come back after spending a few hours around Koraigad Fort.

The Journey to Kataldhar Waterfall

The trek to the Kataldhar Waterfall is one of the most exciting and rewarding treks in Maharashtra. The trek starts from the Udhewadi Village, which is also the base village for the Rajmachi Fort trek . The trek is around 5 km long, and takes around 3 to 4 hours to complete, depending on your speed and stamina. The trek is of moderate difficulty level, and requires some basic fitness and trekking skills. You will need to carry some essential equipment, such as:

Photo of Kataldhar Waterfall 1/4 by

- A sturdy backpack with enough space for your belongings

- A water bottle with at least 2 liters of water

- A raincoat or a poncho to protect you from the rain

- A pair of comfortable shoes with good grip and ankle support

- A hat or a cap to shield you from the sun

- A flashlight or a headlamp to help you in the dark

- A first aid kit with some basic medicines and bandages

- A camera or a phone to capture the memories

The trek begins with a gradual ascent through a dirt road, which leads to a forest trail. The trail is surrounded by lush green trees, plants, and flowers, which create a soothing and refreshing atmosphere. You will also encounter some small streams and waterfalls along the way, which add to the charm and the challenge of the trek. You will also get to see some amazing views of the valley, the hills, and the fort from the trail.

The trail then becomes steeper and narrower, as you approach the waterfall. You will have to cross some slippery rocks, muddy patches, and steep slopes, which will test your balance and agility. You will also have to be careful of the leeches, snakes, and insects, which may be lurking in the forest. You will also have to be mindful of the weather, as it may change suddenly and cause heavy rain, fog, or thunderstorms.

The trek ends with a spectacular sight of the Kataldhar Waterfall, which will take your breath away. The waterfall is around 350 feet high, and falls from a cliff into a deep gorge. The waterfall is named Kataldhar, which means “the scissor’s edge”, because of its shape and location. The waterfall is also known as the “hidden waterfall”, because it is not visible from the main road or the fort, and can only be seen from a specific angle.

The waterfall is at its best during the monsoon season, from June to September, when it is in full flow and creates a majestic and mesmerizing spectacle. Photo of Kataldhar Waterfall 4/4 by

- Check the weather forecast before you plan your trek, and avoid going on a rainy or stormy day. The monsoon season is the best time to visit the waterfall, but it also makes the trail slippery and dangerous. If you encounter heavy rain, fog, or thunderstorms, seek shelter and wait for the weather to clear.

- Carry enough water and food for the trek, and avoid drinking water from the streams or waterfalls, as they may be contaminated. You can also carry some energy bars, chocolates, nuts, and fruits to keep you energized and hydrated. You can also buy some local food from the village or the nearby stalls, but make sure it is fresh and hygienic.

- Wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the trek, and avoid wearing cotton, jeans, or sandals. You should wear synthetic, quick-drying, and breathable clothes, such as t-shirts, shorts, leggings, or track pants. You should also wear sturdy shoes with good grip and ankle support, such as trekking shoes, sports shoes, or sneakers. You should also carry a raincoat or a poncho, a hat or a cap, and a change of clothes in case you get wet or dirty.

- Carry a first aid kit with some basic medicines and bandages, and use them in case of any injuries or illnesses. You should also carry some antiseptic cream, insect repellent, sunscreen, and painkillers. You should also be aware of the symptoms and treatment of common ailments, such as dehydration, heatstroke, altitude sickness, leech bites, snake bites, and allergies.

- Follow the instructions and guidance of the local guides, villagers, or experienced trekkers, and do not wander off the trail or go near the edge of the cliff. You should also respect the rules and regulations of the forest and the waterfall, and do not litter, damage, or harm the environment. You should also respect the culture and customs of the local people, and do not disturb, offend, or harass them.

- Carry a flashlight or a headlamp, a whistle, a compass, and a map or a GPS device, and use them in case of any emergency or difficulty. You should also carry a phone or a camera with enough battery and memory, and use them to communicate or capture the memories. You should also inform someone about your trek plan and location, and keep them updated about your status and progress.

- Have fun and enjoy the trek, but also be responsible and careful. The Kataldhar Waterfall Trek is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and you should make the most of it. But you should also be aware of the potential dangers and difficulties, and be prepared to face them. You should also be respectful and grateful to the nature and the people, and leave no trace behind.

How can we talk about monsoon getaways and not mention waterfalls! There’s no scarcity of beautiful waterfalls in Lonavala. Kune Falls in Lonavala is the 14th highest waterfall in India which flows from a height of 200 meters. Witnessing these falls in all their pride in the monsoon would make for a refreshing experience.

Waterfalls like the Kataldhar Falls and the Bhivpuri Waterfall are popular among trekkers. Both these falls can be reached through a trek into the green Sahyadris. The Kataldhar Falls especially is a hidden gem, you can have some peaceful ‘me time’ after reaching the waterfall because of less crowd. Bhivpuri Waterfall is a little further away from Lonavala, but totally worth the visit because the falls are over 20 feet high and offer adventure sports for thrill-seekers.

Lonavala Waterfalls are the easiest to reach as they are just 7 minutes away from the railway station. It’s the most visited waterfall because of its proximity to the main town of Lonavala, and you’ll see many food stalls around the place when you reach.

But the best of all waterfalls in Lonavala is the Reverse Waterfalls near Lohagad Fort. You can see only this in the monsoon season. The water here beats gravity and flows upwards, because of the high-pressure winds. Take our word and don’t miss Lonavala’s Reverse Waterfalls in the monsoon!

The rainy season comes with brimming water bodies, and the lakes of Lonavala aren’t behind in the race. Tungali Lakes, Pawna Lake, and Lonavala Lake are visited by many travelers in the monsoon, as the rains make the lakes all the more romantic and photogenic. Pawna Lake has been gaining lots of popularity in recent years with many hotels and homestays sprouting up on its scenic shores.

You can enjoy water sports like boating, kayaking, and jet skiing in the calm waters of Pawna Lake. Who knew that Pawna Lake, a reservoir-turned-artificial-lake can be such a hit among adventure seekers? When you just feel like relaxing with a book in hand, dip your toes in the quiet waters of the Tungarli Lake and let the day fade away into a lovely sunset over the waters.

Anyone who visits Lonavala in the monsoon includes the Lonavala Lake in their travel itinerary. The nature around Lonavala Lake drowns in bright colors after the first showers of rain. The lake is very near to the town, so it’s easy to cover it if you are in a rush to finish sightseeing.

Lonavala is home to many scenic dams that are at their best during the monsoon. Unlike forts, which are frequented by youngsters who can handle tough treks, the dams in Lonavala are more of a family affair visited by elders too. The most popular dam in Lonavala is the Bhushi Dam; one glance around the dam and you will see families, couples, and youngsters having a gala time.

Bhushi Dam is built on the mighty Indrayani River, you might be tempted to jump into the water in the monsoon, but entering the deep waters of Bhushi Dam is not allowed. Don’t be disappointed, you can sit on the steps of the dam as they overflow with some cool gushing water in the rainy months.

Another dam that sits on the Indrayani River is the Valvan Dam, famous for its striking views. Valvan Dam is just 4 km away from Lonavala Railway Station and is easily approachable by road. The gardens and naturally rich landscapes surrounding the Valvan Dam make it an ideal one-day picnic spot in Lonavala.

Waterfall in Lonavala

Nestled between the hills of Western Ghats, Lonavala has abundant cliff tops to view sunsets from. If you’re a Mumbaikar, you must’ve already heard about the Rajmachi Point, or even visited it! Every evening, many people flock to the point, street food in their hands, to witness the sunset behind the Sahyadris. It can be tough to spot the sun setting in the monsoon, but you can feel the strong monsoon wind and see the rain hug the valley in front of you. Just beware of the monkeys here, they can steal your food!

You’re in for some spectacular panoramic views of valleys and faraway waterfalls if you visit Lion’s Point. This point is 11 km away from the main Lonavala town but visited by many tourists all over the year. Duke’s Nose and Tiger’s Leap are must-visit places in the monsoon; the Sahyadri ranges standing in all glory make for a good view in the monsoon from these points.

Look down carefully at the valley from each of these points, you’ll see tiny settlements, curving rivers, and little waterfalls making their way from mountain cracks. The experience is heightened after the rains wash the valleys of Lonavala in lush greenery.

Oh, the joys of eating a bhutta (roasted corn) and sipping on hot tea from a kulhad (mud cup) in the rains! One thing that you shouldn’t miss when in Lonavala is the Golden Vada Pav. What makes this Vada Pav unique is the spicy thecha(local chutney) that is served along with it. Don’t leave the Golden Vada Pav without trying their moong dal bhajia; the mere aroma of the fried bhajia will draw you towards it.

If you want to experience some delicious exotic cuisines, head over to the Kinara Village Dhaba in Lonavala. You can slide your fingers into some Mughlai, North Indian, and Chinese dishes at this hotel. The ambiance of the hotel is that of a traditional Maharashtrian Wada, with terracotta roofs and traditional-style verandas.

The food of Lonavala is incomplete without its famous Chikki, which was invented in the 19th century in Lonavala. Today, new varieties of chikkis like oats and walnut chikkis are as much loved as the original chikki (hard candy made of jaggery and peanuts). Chikki shopping is best done in Maganlal Chikki in Lonavala. While you’re at it, try the chocolate walnut fudge, trust us, one bite and you will claim the entire packet for yourself.

Though Lonavala has a railway station and has frequent trains operating on the Pune-Lonavala route, we would suggest traveling to Lonavala by road. By road, Lonavala is 83 km from Mumbai and 65 km from Pune. Half your sightseeing will be done en route to Lonavala, as beautiful sights greet you on both sides of the road. A bike ride in the monsoon to reach Lonavala surpasses any adventure ride in a theme park. Take the old Mumbai-Pune road NH4 for some visually stunning landscapes along the way.

For those little cravings you have for vacation, Lonavala-Khandala is always there for you. The forts, lakes, dams, mountains, and food around the two nearby towns attract hordes of visitors every weekend. Lonavala is surely fun in the monsoon, but comes with its own dangers too, beware of slippery rocks while trekking and of the deep waters of the dams.

The Complete Guide to Rajmachi Trek

Rajmachi Trek is nestled in the midst of two popular hill stations – Lonavala and Karjat. The trek can be approached either via the Lonavala side or the Karjat side and offers trekkers to climb two forts starting from the same base village of Udhewadi.

Manaranjan Fort is at 2510 feet and west-facing fort while Shriwardhan Fort at 2710 feet faces to the east.

This trek is known for the fireflies which flock to the area in the late evenings.

If you are trekking via Lonavala, the trail is much longer but easier to trek and reach the two forts. You will be trekking through mud trails along the forest section most of the way until you reach Udhewadi.

The Kandala route starts at the caves and waterfalls of Khondane. This has a steeper climb through a forest section and joins Udhewadi village.

These forts were built by the Satavahanas but gained fame under the rule of Shivaji Maharaj, who took over the fort in the 15th century. Shivaji Maharaj fortified and expanded the fort by adding several structures within the premises. The forts have seen battles between the Marathas and the Mughals. Later in the 19th century, it was taken over by the British.

The fort was also a popular trade route connecting present-day Mumbai and Pune

In the monsoon season, you will see the water flowing from above the top of the caves. The streams from here feed the Ulhas River in the monsoons.

After spending some time at the caves, it’s time to move towards the Rajmachi trail. You will notice a small trail on the right of caves that you need to take.

Walk on the trail till you find a signboard saying Rajmachi with the arrow mark. Keep walking on the marked trail and don’t change the trail as you would see the white arrow marks throughout the route.

Trek in the direction of the Lonavala route until you spot a trail gradually climbing upwards on the left.

The trail is pretty straight forward with an entrance board set as well. You will see the map of the forts and information on Rajmachi on this information board.

Best Time to do the Rajmachi Trek

Rajmachi Trek can be done in multiple seasons. Like most treks, the benefits and charm change based on the month that you are trekking. Here are the details of what you will be seeing during these months of trekking.

The months of May, June is the best time to witness fireflies on the trek. These beetles with bio luminescence live for only two months. With them glowing bright during the evenings and nighttime, you will be taken back to a land of wonder.

If you are trekking during the monsoon season, you will get to see the charm of lush greenery and valleys filled with waterfalls.

Post monsoon and the winter season, the color changes on the trek completely. The color of autumn trees and clear views is something totally different to trek for.

Is Rajmachi Fort Trek Difficult

Rajmachi is an easy-moderate-level trek. There are no sections on the Rajmachi trek that can be classified as difficult as such. However, a trekker must know about these sections to keep an eye out while trekking.

This is the only one section on the trek which can be classified as something to be cautious of.

Stream Crossing after the Valvand Village : Stream crossing is after Valvand Village road fork on the Lonavala trail. In the peak of the monsoon season, the current of the stream could get strong and the water level could increase rapidly.
