Shatrunjaya Hill

At a distance of 9 km from the Palitana Railway Station, Shatrunjaya Hill is a sacred hill situated at Palitana town in Bhavnagar district of Gujarat. Situated at the foot of the Shantrujaya Hills, it is one of its kind museum in India and among the best places to visit in Palitana. Your Palitana Guide for an Impressive Jain Pilgrimage

I would be lying if I told you that I liked the dusty polluted town of Palitana. That’s why I’m making this Palitana Guide for you. First impressions are not kind to a place like this. It’s considered a “Holy City” in the Jain religion and has a massive community of Jain followers that live and worship here. But alongside the bald white-robed Jain monks is a rough city crumbling beneath its own history. It appears little money goes towards the upkeep of anything besides the immaculate temples and traveling here as a foreigner is difficult as lodging options are limited. Specifically, for foreigners. 

But the Jain temple (or many Jain Temples) at the summit of the 2.2-mile or 3,000-step staircase makes the town worth your visit. It’s truly one of the most incredible collections of carefully carved stone architecture I’ve ever seen. With the sun rising behind you casting a smoggy red glow over the entire valley — there are few more peaceful and beautiful temples in India. And the Jain monks are kind and curious about visitors. 

Since this isn’t a super popular place in India to visit, there was very little information online to help guide us on our quest. That’s where this Palitana Guide comes in handy. 

Your Complete Guide to Palitana 

Let’s talk about this lesser-visited destination. I’ll share some Palitana temple photos, explain some Palitana history for those curious to learn the significance of said Palitana temples, help you get from popular cities like Mumbai to Palitana, and share some other neat places to visit near Palitana while you’re in the area.

This is the best guide to Palitana on the internet. Because it might be the only one.

What is the Jain Pilgrimage? 

Jain is a devout religion that combines a bit of Buddhism, a bit of Hinduism, and a little of its own mix. 

The monks practice an extreme form of non-violence where they refrain from eating anything living (including potatoes and other vegetables you must kill to consume), transport only on foot (so as to not kill anything- no matter how small) often sweeping the ground in front of them as they go, and live a life of complete detachment. 

This is one of their holy sites. The entire city actually. And the temples within it are worth seeing. Visiting Jains will climb this mountain not once but 99 times during their visit. Barefoot and often dropping to their knees to pray after each step. Once was plenty for me. The Jains will typically climb 3 times per day for a month to complete the pilgrimage. 

The Palitana temple steps distance is around 4.4 miles round trip.

Who Built Palitana Temple?

These temples scattered across the top of Shatrunjaya Hill were built over a period of 900 years beginning in the 11th century. Many of the temples in town are much newer. Some are still currently being constructed. That’s what makes this specific site so holy and interesting.

According to the Gujarat tourism site, it was  Kumarpal Solanki , a great Jain patron, who built the first temples.

What is the best time of year to visit Palitana? 

If you plan to hike the mountain (and that’s the only real reason to visit Palitana) then I recommend the winter. November-March is the best season because the desert temps are more manageable. 

How to Reach Palitana 

This is one of the most essential parts of this Palitana Guide. I thought this city since it is a major pilgrimage site in Gujarat, would be easy to reach— but I was wrong. 

The easiest place to reach Palitana is Ahmedabad. And you’ll have to do it via bus. 

Some people try to go Mumbai to Palitana rather than Ahmedabad to Palitana, but this is a VERY long journey that will have to transit through Ahmedabab anyway. I don’t recommend it. If you insist though take the overnight train from Mumbai to Ahmedabad and be sure to book in advance.

How to Book Your Palitana Bus

You can use RedBus or Goibibo App to look up the schedule between the two cities. But since you need both an Indian phone number and an Indian credit card to book online— you are going to need your hostel/guesthouses’ help to book the tickets. This is one of the great frustrations of India. You CAN book your tickets with added convenience fees usually around $3-6 per ticket on 12go.Asia or Ease My Trip . You can book your ticket through one of the many travel agencies on the street as well. Just be sure to look up the price before you get there so they don’t take advantage of you. The bus ride will take about 5-6 hours.

There is also a once-per-week train if that works in your schedule. It only runs on Wednesdays.

If this all seems a little complicated it’s because it is. Getting around in India is cheap but it can be timeconsuming to score those cheap prices. I wrote a full guide on for “first-timer’s in India” to help with all the logistics.

Charyana Dorms in Ahmedabad has an insanely kind and helpful host who booked all our trains and buses. Like 7 of them. That being said…I can’t recommend the place to anyone besides extreme budget travelers because the bathrooms were horrendous! I’ve actually never seen such a messy hostel before. I’m also fairly positive I watched a staff member just remake the bed with the same sheets. But for $3 per bed, I suppose that’s what you get. 

It’s not easy to reach other destinations (like Gir National Park) from Palitana either. You’ll have to take a bus or train back to Ahmedabad. All things in Gujarat run through Ahmedabad.

Important Things to Know For Your Palitana Pilgrimage 

This is probably what you are here for. What do you need to know before you set out up the mountain?

• The best time to hike is at 5 AM. This will put you at the summit around sunrise and allow you to descend before the heat is absolutely blistering. This is the single most important factor of your hike.
• You cannot bring snacks or water on the 4.4-mile round-trip hike . This is a Jain rule. The hike is meant to be a fast and there will be someone checking your bags at the bottom. It sucks — I know. I recommend bringing a reusable Lifestraw bottle and tucking it into your backpack. Technically, you just can’t bring plastic (because people throw their trash everywhere in India) or drink before sunrise (Jain rule). We managed the hike without water but I was very thirsty at the end.
• Also no cameras. Cell phones are fine but they turned us back with our DSLR. Technically speaking, there is to be no photography on the mountain, but we saw many people using their phone cameras, so we did too. 

• The hike itself isn’t too intense. Nothing compared to Adam’s Peak in Sri Lanka (another awesome pilgrimage). It took us a total of 4 hours with the hike up and down with lots of time to take photos on the top. 
• There will be people ready to cart you up and down by pure brute strength if you can’t make it yourself. It is a rickety little chair set up and costs 1,000 rupees. But other than that there is no way up but walking. 
• Be sure to dress temple appropriately. This means shoulders and knees covered men or women. 
• You will have to go barefoot when you reach the temples. There will be a place to store your shoes. 
• It is really worth the effort. We’ve seen a lot of temples, in India and elsewhere, and these are among the most intricately carved and beautiful we’ve gotten to see.
• The entire experience is free. Other than the rickshaw ride to the Jain Temple entrance. If you stay at Om Palace the ride should be 10 minutes and cost no more than 150 rupees. And that’s generous.
• There will be food open at the base of the mountain when you return. Definitely pop in for some breakfast after the hike. Most other places in town won’t open until 11 AM or Noon.

Where to stay in Palitana 

As I mentioned, places to stay are limited. And many won’t rent to foreigners. I think it has something to do with government paperwork. That being said we stayed at the only hotel on Booking.com and we didn’t love it — but it did the job. The rooms are large and A/C but don’t expect a shower or much at all beyond that. It’s also in the shitty part of town. I’ll let the reviews speak for themselves.

How long to Stay in Palitana?

According to our host in Ahmedabad, few people stay overnight in the city. Most Indians will visit with a car and make it a day trip. I recommend one night in the city. This way you can hike at sunrise and wander around the town for an evening before grabbing a bus back. But you really don’t need longer in Palitana. 

You can book bus tickets easily either the day of or the day before from the Palitana bus station — just a short walk from Om Palace Hotel . 

If you are interested in Palitana tour packages it is best to arrange it from Ahmedabad. Any of the hotels in the area should be able to coordinate this for you. In that case, you wouldn’t have to worry about transport or about staying at one of the less-than-lovely hotels. But it’s really not that difficult to do independently.

Best Places to Eat in Palitana 

Finding food in Palitana overwhelmed us at first. It’s hot and dusty and polluted and most places serving food looked sketchy at best. And I’m a street food lover. But once you learn to distinguish the dilapidated unassuming hole-in-the-wall eateries you’ll find the food to be pretty good. 

The Gujarat Thali at Jagruti (across from the bus station) is cheap and famous. 

The cheese and masala dosa that can be found near Takdir Restaurant is exceptional. One of the best in Gujarat. Just look for the sign showing Dosa out front. 

Breakfast at Janata Bhel after the trek is best. They have great banana chips, sugar cane juice, and Bhel Puri.  

Other Places to See Near Palitana

You would wander around the city to see some of the other, newer Jain temples while you are here. They are absolutely stunning. Most of them don’t have the same history as the ones on the mountain but still worth looking at. Here are a few other places in Gujarat (the state that Palitana is in) that you should visit if you’re already over here.

Gir National Park. The only place in the world you can still see wild Asiatic lions. Enough said.

Ahmedabad. You have no choice but to come here so you might as well enjoy it. The best sights were Manek Chowk market for dinner, Hutheesing Jain Temples, Shree Swaminarayan Mandir Kalupur, and Dai Halima Vav (stepwell). Visit these places and you might actually enjoy the chaotic city. We also became a regular at Lucky Restaurant for morning chai, bun maska, and sandwiches. It’s super cheap and the restaurant is unique because it was built on an old Muslim cemetery. Instead of just destroying it, the owner built the whole place around it. So now you dine with the tombs.

If you can make it out to the White Desert of Kutch, you won’t regret it. Without your own car , I think it is way too expensive. Let me know if you find a budget-friendly way or if you managed to visit!

Travel in Gujarat isn’t for the faint of heart. Once away from the beaten tourist trail or the hippie highway as it’s known in India you’ll find getting around much more difficult. You’ll also have to be okay with eating local food— even if that means just street food with very limited options. But for those intrepid few who visit you’ll find that the west desert has a handful of interesting places worth the visit. Palitana is one of them. Hopefully, this guide to Palitana and the Jain Holy City gives you all the info you need to plan your next adventure in India.

Palitana a city and a municipality in the Saurashtra region of Gujarat , 50 km south-west of Bhavnagar city. It is a major pilgrimage centre for Jains.

Palitana was founded in 1194 and was ruled by nobles until it joined the newly independent country of India in 1948. No-one is allowed to sleep overnight including the priest, because the temple city was built as an abode for the Gods. The temples have been renovated 16 times over the centuries: the Sixteenth Renovation took place in 1587.

Palitana is the fantastic hilltop Jain temple city, an essential holy pilgrimage destination for this nonviolent community. A city of gleaming marble monuments housing representations of the few human souls that have managed to be liberated from the cycle of life.

Bhavnagar , the nearest airport, is 51 km from Palitana, but it connects only with Mumbai .

For people coming from other places, a more convenient airport would be Ahmedabad which has an international airport, or Vadodara , which hosts many domestic flights from important cities like Mumbai and Delhi .

Palitana has a small railway station with connections only to Bhavnagar. However, there is more rail traffic to Bhavnagar, so it may be more convenient in many cases to take a train to Bhavnagar and travel from there to Palitana by road.

There are buses from Bhavnagar to Palitana. Regular buses are also available from Ahmedabad, Talaja, Una, and Diu, and every day from Mumbai. The bus stand is 800 m away from the Palitana railway station.

Palitana temples

This sacred destination in Gujarat ‘s Bhavnagar district is a city with 900 temples distributed throughout Shatrunjaya Mountain. It covers around 20 acres of land and has nine hilltops. The well-organized temple complex, a tirtha (holy spiritual location) of the Jain community, was created by Jain forefathers during the 11th and 20th centuries.

The notion that the mountain has been bestowed by 23 Tirthankaras is responsible for this unwavering loyalty and devotion (Tirthankaras who have attained a complete state of nirvana and guide others to find the same, as pe r Jain mythology).

The temples are composed of marble and display the incredible architectural skill of past craftsmen. With their exquisite carvings, jewel-encrusted sculptures, stunning idols, and towering walls around them, the temples appear to be a mix of vast European mansions and formidable Indian monuments.

Almost every tourist here, whether a Jainism adherent or not, agrees that the 3.5-kilometre upward trek on Shatrunjaya mountain is an otherworldly journey. The cluster of well-ordered and magnificent 900 temples is a view not to be skipped. It takes almost 3,750 stone stairs to get there which adds to the spectacular encounter.

Most days, thousands of devotees attempt the journey. Especially during Kartik Purnima, which symbolizes the conclusion of Chaturmas, a four-month time of religious retreat, pilgrims are seen in huge numbers.

Once you reach there, the major entrance, Ram Pole, is to the left, but the finest sights are to the right, where you can witness the Gulf of Cambay on a sunny day. One passage within the Nav Tonk Gate leads left to the shrine of Angar Pir, a Muslim prophet who defended the sites during a Mughal invasion.

The Chaumukhji Tunk, located to the right, houses the Chaumukh (Four-Faced Shrine), which was established in 1618 by a Jain trader. Adinath, the first Jain Tirthankar (assumed to have acquired enlightenment here), is represented with images facing the four cardinal points. You could simply spend a few hours up here roaming through the hundreds of temples . The Adinath Temple, on the highest altitude on the far (south) side, is the largest, perhaps one of the most spectacular and significant sites with a great amount of exquisite sculpture.

This temple is popular not only with Jains but also amongst Hindus and Muslims. On top of the peaks, there lies a little Siva shrine. Muslims also visit here to pray at Angar Peer Baba’s Dargah. Angar Peer Baba, a Sufi saint, is revered as Palitana’s rescuer.

History of the Palitana temples

The Palitana temples on Shatrunjaya Hill were constructed over 900 years beginning in the 11th century. The first temples in this location were erected by Kumarpal Solanki, a famous Jain devotee. The temples were demolished by Turkish Muslim invaders in 1311 AD when the shrines were ruled over by the monk Jinaprabhasuri, who was 50 years old, but they were eventually reconstructed to their splendour.

Following that, Jain temples were constructed again in the area. Over time, the location became a major spot for Jain pilgrims from around the globe. Palitana was formally recognized as the world’s first fully vegetarian community in 2014. It also holds the distinction of being the only hillside city to have a thousand temples.

The most notable temple complex is dedicated to the first Jain Tirthankar, Rishabhanatha of Jainism’s 24 Tirthankaras. His name is derived from his mother’s 14 fortunate dreams wherein a bull (Rishabha) arrived before his birth. Foreign tourists are only permitted to access the main temple compound.

How to reach Palitana

• You may go to Ahmedabad by train or plane (airports in Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar) and then call a taxi to Palitana town in the Bhavnagar district.
• Rest at Dharamshala, which is around 5-10 minutes from Shatrunjaya Hill. They offer their on-time Jain food options.
• From October through March, it is the best time to come. During the monsoon season, the yatra is closed for four months.

Some tips to remember while visiting Palitana temples

• Wear traditional or complete attire as a mark of respect toward Jain culture.
• Bring enough water for your hike.
• You can’t eat anything on the hill, so eat a little before you start climbing.
• You might climb without shoes or footwear, therefore, wear protective socks.
• After you return, recharge yourself with sugar water (Sakar nu paani) or sugarcane juice at a booth (Bhatu Ghar) near the Taleti, which is complimentary for all the devotees.
• Taking photographs inside the temple is against the law.
• Pilgrims are not permitted to bring food into the temple.
• Everyone, even the priests, is required to return by sunset.
• It is forbidden to slaughter animals for food in this location since meat is outlawed. The selling of eggs or chicken is prohibited. The region belongs mostly to Jain. The prohibition occurred as a result of a hunger strike by Jain priests seeking an end to the usage of meat, which they believe is against their ideas and traditions.

Palitana: A land with a thousand temples on the hill

For the tourists, Palitana, situated in the Bhavnagar district of Gujarat is a city of wonders. Home to one of the largest Jain pilgrimage centers in the world, this place offers visitors a world of awe-inspiring architecture, religious brotherhood, and compassion for fellow human beings. The vistas of thousands of temples built on the top of the hill are stunning and take us back to ancient times.

Palitana is a pilgrimage center for the Shwethambara, one of the two branches of Jainism, the other being the Digambara. Svetambara means "white-clad” and refers to its ascetics' practice of wearing white clothes, which sets it apart from the Digambara "sky-clad '' Jains, whose ascetic practitioners go naked. Svetambara’s, unlike Digambaras, do not believe that ascetics must practice nudity. Svetambara Jain communities are currently found mainly in Gujarat, Rajasthan and coastal regions of Maharashtra. The Shatrunjaya Mahathirth Hills in Palitana is a pilgrimage center that is considered sacred by the Jain community. There are more than 1300 marble temples located in Shatrunjaya Hills. Most of these are adorned with gold and silver donated by the devotees.

Apart from the Chaumukh Temple and the Adinath Temple, other famous temples are the Kumarpal, Vimal Shah, Sahasrakuda and Ashtapada temples. The 591 m high mountain is located on a rugged trail that stretches for about 4 km. Dolly and lift chairs are also available for those who have difficulty walking. These temples give the impression of being in Tibet or China. In the 17th century, Murad Baksh Palitana, the son of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and the Governor of Gujarat, gifted the village to Shantidas Daveri, a prominent Jain merchant.

Following this, Jain temples were built in the area. Over time, the place became a favourite destination for Jain pilgrims from all over the world. In 2014, Palitana was legally declared as the first pure vegetarian village in the world. It also carries the record of being the only mountain city with a thousand temples. The most important temple complex is named after Rishabhanatha, the first Jain Tirthankar. Rishabhanatha, (Lord Bull) the first of the 24 Tirthankaras of Jainism. His name comes from the series of 14 auspicious dreams that his mother had, in which a bull (rishabha) appeared, before his birth. Foreigners are allowed to only enter the main temple complex.

It is against the law to take photos inside. Visitors are not allowed to carry food with them to the temple. Everyone, including the priests, must return before nightfall. Not just Jains, but this temple is a favourite of the Hindus and Muslims as well. There is a small Siva temple on the top of the hills. Muslims also come here to worship at the Dargah of Angar Peer Baba. Angar Peer Baba, a Sufi saint, is known as the savior of Palitana. It is illegal to kill animals for food here as meat is prohibited in this region. The sale of eggs or meat is strictly out of bounds here. The ban came following a hunger strike by Jain monks demanding an end to the use of meat, which according to them is detrimental to their practices and beliefs as it is a Jain-majority area.

How to get there? Palitana is easily accessible from Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar. It can be reached by air and rail. Bhavnagar is the nearest air base located at a distance of 51 km from Palitana. There are direct trains to Palitana from all the major places in the country. This holy place is easily accessible by road. The best time to visit this place is from November to March.

Some of the most popular Jain temples in India Ranakpur Jain Temple, Ranakpur (Rajasthan): The 15th century Ranakpur Temple is a major pilgrimage site for the Jain community and is often regarded as an architectural wonder worldwide. Located at Ranakpur village, 95 kilometres north of Udaipur, the temple was built by businessman Dharna Shah with the help of the Mewar ruler. The complex comprises of a number of temples namely the Chatutmukha Temple, Parsavanth Temple, Surya Temple and the Amba Temple. Thousands of beautifully carved pillars support this heritage landmark and each one of them is designed uniquely. In every nook and cranny, finely engraved Jain scriptures can be found. The historic Ranakpur Temple was among the best 77 wonders while deciding the ‘7 Wonders of the World‘. It is truly one of the jewels of Rajasthan.

Dharmanath Temple, Kerala : One of the popular places for Jain pilgrimage, Dharmanath Temple in Kerala attracts devotees from every nook and corner of the world. The century-old temple offers utter serenity and is the perfect spot for meditation. The temple derives its name from the 15th Tirthankara – Dharmanath. Furthermore, the idols of four Jain Lords in the sanctum sanctorum achieve the sobriquet of a ‘theerth’. Splendid architecture coupled with impeccable cleanliness inside and outside the complex make it a must visit place. It is starkly similar to that of the Jain Dilwara Temple in Mount Abu. Additionally, the intricately carved pillars and walls tell a tale in their own way. The nearest Airport to Dharmanath Temple is the Cochin International Airport which is at a distance of 42 km.

Gomateshwara Temple: One of the oldest Jain temples in India, Gomateshwara temple is situated at Shravanabelagola in Hassan district of Karnataka. One of the most interesting facts about Gomateshwara Temple is that it is also known as Shravanabelagola Temple or Bahubali Temple. The temple has a 17-meter-high statue of the first Jain Tirthankara, the main deity, which is the largest monolithic statue in the world. The Gomateshwara temple was built in the 10th century by General Chamundarai, the king of the Ganga dynasty, Rajamalla. The inscriptions are believed to be written in Tamil and Kannada based on the statue. Mahamastakabhisheka is a major festival celebrated once in 12 years at the Gomateshwara temple, where the idol is bathed with milk, saffron, ghee and curd, during which a large number of Jain followers and tourists can be seen.

Dilwara Temple, Mount Abu (Rajasthan): Located at a distance of 2.5 kilometres from Mount Abu, Dilwara Temple is one of the exquisite Jain religious structures known for its impeccable architecture. The temple was built between 11th and 13th century by Vimal Shah and was beautifully designed by the Dhokla Jain Ministers. Although there are a number of Jain temples all over Rajasthan, culture hounds consider Dilwara Temple as one of the finest examples of architectural splendour. The beautiful temple majestically rises out of the pancake-flat land and sparkles in the sunlight. Devotees coming here do not only experience a strong connection with divinity but also enjoy the tranquility of the surroundings. The large complex is divided into five different sections dedicated to the Tirthankaras. The temple of Lord Adinath is the oldest amongst all. The entire complex showcases fine workmanship and intricate designs. The splendid carvings of lotus buds, flowers and petals adorned on the marble pillars and ceiling looks distinctive and adds to the beauty. Dilwara Temple also provides bathing facilities to the pilgrims which are mandatory before the puja.

Sonagiri temple: This white temple is dedicated to Digambar Jains, a small sect of Jainism. Located in a small and peaceful town of Sonagiri of Madhya Pradesh, this temple is located on a small mount, Shatrunjaya. The mount holds more than 900 temples, each one unique and interesting. This white temple is famous for its beauty during sunrise, unique rituals, and the countless architectural marvels. One need to climb 300 steps, bare footed. You can find jeweled statues, sculptures, carvings and many other interesting elements inside the temple. Since it is located in the middle of a serene and secluded mount, peace is inevitable.

Kulpakji Temple: Located in Telangana region, this temple is more than 2000 years old. It is an important pilgrimage site for Svetabaram Jains, a section of Jainism. This temple is decorated with red sandstones and white marbles. The temple holds idols of Lord Mahavira, Lord Rishabhanatha and Lord Neminatha. The idol of Lord Mahavira is the top attraction of this temple. This 130 cm long statue is made entirely out of one single piece of jade. This is an important site to visit if you are looking for a peaceful time.

Hanumantal Jain Temple, Jabalpur : Built in 17th century CE, Hanumantal Jain Temple is the place from where the annual Jain procession on the birthday of Lord Mahavira starts. One of the most famous Jain Temples in India, it is a treasure trove of stories. apart from spiritually, the temple additionally mirrors a fortress having twenty-two shrines. Palitana – The Holy Place of Jain Pilgrimage

This has to be one of the most sacred places of worship for the Jain communities across the globe. Located on the Shatrunjaya Hills the Palitana cluster of temple comprises of a collection of 863 temples dedicated to the Jain gods. All these places of worship are immaculate and very opulent no matter what the size and the top can be reached after walking up around 3,000 steps from the foothills. The main temple on the top is dedicated to the St Tirthankara and the construction date of these sacred portals of religion can be dated back to 10 th and is believed to have been completed over a time period of around 900 years. The currently standing structures have been renovated several times but the authenticity and spirituality here remain untouched.

Temple Architecture

The temples of Palitana display exquisite architecture and are heavily and very richly ornamented and adorned. The brilliance of the temple architecture lies in the fact that it has been constructed in such a unique way that the sunlight transforms the marble structures into some sort of an ivory shield. Out of the 863 temples the holiest one is the temple of Adishwar. This Tirth Sthal for Jains is primarily made out of marbles with tall and heavy pillars with a number of openings, kind of like a typical Hindu temple. The interiors are very intricately and finely carved complete with geometric lace designs, elaborately carved ceilings and clustered forms of canopies.

The hill holds a very special and pious place in the hearts of devout Jains. The sanctity of the Palitana temples lies in the fact that as per Shatrunjaya Mahatmya – the holy Jain texts – the 1 st Tirthankara called Rishabh had delivered his very first sermon here and had successfully sanctified the hills. Later on his grandson, Pundarika is said to have attained his nirvana here in the Shatrunjaya hills (the first and initial name of the current Shatrunjaya hills were named Pundarikgiri. The hills are also said to have been visited several times by Bharata Chakravartin – the father of Pundarik and half-brother of Baahubali. A temple built by him dedicated to honour the life of his father Rishabh. If  legends and mythological aspects are to be believed then a number of other tirthankaras are also said to have paid a holy visit to these hills making it even more pious and sacred.

Religious Practice

The temples that are clustered here are known as Tunks, and it is important for the Jains to undertake this pilgrimage yatra at least once in a lifetime much like the Char Dham Yatra undertaken by the Hindus. Mostly the people on the journey cover the entire path barefoot and as a tradition they cover their mouths while offering puja to the tirthankaras inside the temple so that no insects are swallowed by accident. This is also one of the reasons why they don’t light lanterns and in fact the aarti is done with a covered lantern. Some even do this pilgrimage journey while simultaneously fasting as well. Eating anything while on the hill is in fact considered to be a sin. As one is climbing up the stairs people are expected maintain the sanctity of this place by keeping silent and praying. Fasting is done till the time the pilgrims reach back to the auditorium on the foothill in Anandji Kalyanji Trust.

The Phagun day in Sunday is celebrated as 6 Gaon or Chha Gau Teerth Yatra which falls in between February / March; Jain followers in thousands of numbers make this pilgrimage to attain their salvation or nirvana. During this time 3 times as many Jain followers make a visit to this temple complex. Another important festival that takes place here is the Purnima or full moon day when the Jains visit this place in large numbers since this time also marks the opening day of the temple complex gates after being closed for 4 months during the monsoon season. Pilgrims circumambulate the Shatrunjaya hill which is over all 21.6 kms on foot and offer their prayer to lord Adinath whose temple is located on top of this hill. Mahavir Jayanti or the birthday of lord Mahavira is another prominent festival held in Palitana. The rituals for this include fasting and giving alms to the lesser fortunate people while offering prayer to the huge procession carrying the images of tirthankara in huge decorated chariots.
