One Direction have hand-picked Australian band 5 Seconds Of Summer to accompany them on their upcoming world tour.

That's 110 dates all over the world... Not bad for a band who were found online!

1D member Niall Horan said of the discovery: “We discovered 5SOS on YouTube last year and we all knew straight away they were very special. We’re so excited to have them on the road with us and we know our fans are going to LOVE what these lads do.”

Lead singer of 5SOC Michael, said of the incredible news: “None of this has sunk in for us; it's surreal to think we will be on the same bill as a band who are on such a world-wide scale."

"And now I look at my calendar in my iPhone and it goes from `doing our thing, doing our thing, four shows at the O2 arena in two days! It's crazy.''

Crazy it might be, but it is definitely happening as the tour kicks off at London's O2 Arena February 23.

So here are 5 facts about this new boyband, soon to be huge news.

1. They were discovered on YouTube by 1D's Louis Tomlinson, who saw videos of the group, and them contacted them via social media.

2. The four boys are even younger than 1D! Vocalist/guitarist Luke is 16, vocalist/guitarist Michael is 17, Vocalist and bassist Calum is 17 and drummer Ashton is 18.

3. The boys hail from the other side of the globe, all the way from Sydney, Australia. Although the 1D's boys invited them over to London to record their debut album and to hang out.

4. At the start of the band's career 5SOS began to post covers of their favourite artists on YouTube, before writing and recording their own material.

The Secrets Of One Direction’s Wildly Successful ‘Where We Are’ Tour

The 2014 Where We Are tour remains One Direction’s greatest triumph. Celebrating the boys’ Midnight Memories album, which became the biggest-selling record of 2013 despite only being released in November of that year, the tour started in Bogotá, Colombia, in April, and concluded six months later in Miami, Florida. More than 3 million fans saw their favourite band live , and it reportedly raked in close to $300 million.

With a setlist that incorporated new hits like “Story Of My Life” and “Best Song Ever”, as well as fan favourites like “Little Things”, the tour was deliberately created as a visual feast. The stadium-only locations presented the design team with a challenge: how to ensure the energy of Harry, Liam, Louis, Niall and Zayn’s famously animated performances was not lost in the vast arenas.

Stufish CEO and set designer Ray Winkler was tasked with pulling it off. “I remember the guys having a lot of energy, and being very excited to perform to their fans,” he told Miss Vogue over email. “We had been working very closely with their creative director, Lee Lodge, over the years, so it was great to hook up with him again to design their Where We Are tour in 2014.”

When it came to moodboarding with the band and their team, Winkler said the priority was ensuring that every fan in those gargantuan stadiums felt like Louis, Harry, Liam, Zayn and Niall were singing only to them. “[We] made sure that the stage was pushed deep into the audience and the side video screens were rotated back, so that those who sat in the wings – traditionally not very good seats – could still see their favourite band and be part of the experience,” Winkler explained. “We made sure that no matter where you sat, you could always see them perform on stage.”

The set designer says every member of the band took a keen interest in the process. “They were all equally engaged and interested in the creation of this tour — after all, it was going to be the five of them that needed to make the set come alive, so they could deliver the most memorable experience for their fans. Their passion and ambition to deliver the best show possible was undeniable.” Winkler added: “All the members of One Direction were incredibly interested, and very excited about the fresh new creative approach that Lee brought to the table.”

The boys’ close involvement contributed to the fast-paced, high-energy planning phase ahead of the tour. “Ideas flew thick and fast, so our role was to understand the creative ambition and translate it into a viable touring proposition, while at the same time preserving the energy and intent of the original idea,” he said. “Stufish played an integral part in translating this vision into a vibrant and impactful design that reflected the band’s aspirations and ambitions of being the world’s greatest boy band.” Job done then.

The result was a bold, bright, electrifying production, picked out in a colour palette that reflected the energy of the band. Pyrotechnics were employed for additional drama, with a catwalk-style promenade jutting into the crowd for an intimate touch.

Of course, a key part of the production’s success was the excitement of the fans, who purchased their tickets for the sell-out tour just shy of a year in advance. “The energy that One Direction managed to generate from their fans in the stadium really inspired us to create an experience that their fans would never forget, and to push the boundaries of stage design for a pop concert,” Winkler says.

“The set was quite complex, with multiple entrances and exits connecting to multiple ramps and stairs. You can imagine some of the comedy of trying to choreograph the five band members on a stage terrain that was anything other than flat,” Winkler recalled. “The opportunity to get lost made for some funny moments of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Six years on, Ray clearly still has fond memories of his days working with One Direction boys. “My favourite memory of the tour was being surrounded by so much talent, dedicated to delivering the best show ever. One Direction was such an exciting band to work with, and it was a great privilege to be part of their journey and see them grow creatively.”

One Direction fans will descend on Cardiff on June 5 and 6 as the globally-loved pop group start their On the Road Again Tour.

The band, who are now a four-piece, after the departure of Zayn Malik , are set to play at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff city centre.

The shows will be the biggest of One Direction's On The Road Again Tour which will then visit a host of arenas in cities, such as London, Manchester, Belfast and Newcastle from September.

Who is the support act for One Direction in Cardiff?

Pop punk supergroup McBusted have been announced as support for One Direction's Millennium Stadium gigs in June.

The six-piece, comprised of former members of Busted and McFly, will be joining the massive boy band as they visit the Welsh capital for two dates in June.

It'll be McBusted's second - and third - appearance in Cardiff this year, having played in the Motorpoint Arena previously.

Following the gigs, Niall, Harry, Liam and Louis will then return to the studio to record their fifth album, due to be released later this year.

What time will One Direction be on stage?

The gates open at 5pm and McBusted are set to perform between 7pm to 7.45pm before One Direction take to the stage between 8.30pm and 10.20pm.

Harry, Niall, Liam and Louis are four of the most talked-about pop stars of the present day, and they're coming to London for seven dates with their On The Road Again tour.

One Direction will be performing to approximately 20,000 people each night at the concerts.

Here's all you need to know before heading to the concerts this week:

One Direction will be performing at The O2 Arena every night from Thursday (September 24) until Wednesday (September 30).

Timings below are supplied by the official O2 Arena website :

6.30pm: Doors open

7.30pm: Support act

8pm: Interval

8.30pm: One Direction's performance

10.30pm: Approximate finish time

Due to the immense demand for tickets, the band added more nights to the London leg of the tour and there are still tickets available for a few of the nights (Monday September 28, Tuesday September 29 and Wednesday September 30).

By Tube/train: The O2 Arena is a short walk away from North Greenwich Tube station. North Greenwich station is on the Jubilee Line in zones two and three.

Charlton mainline station is closest to The O2. Catch a 161, 472, or 486 bus to North Greenwich station from there.

By bus: Get on the 108, 129, 132, 161, 188, 422, 472 or 486. They all stop at North Greenwich station.

By bike: The O2 Arena is a long way from west London, but if you want to cycle, there are 500 cycle racks in Car Parks 2, 3 and 4 and by North Greenwich station!

Event parking costs £25 in advance and £30 on the day.

NEWS that four Australian teenage bandmates have been handpicked by British boy band One Direction to open their world tour as seen their profile go skyhigh in only hours.

Rising pop rockers 5 Seconds Of Summer, who hail from Sydney's western suburbs, have as of 5.15pm amassed an amazing 130,289 followers on their Twitter handle and 67,016 Likes on their Facebook account . The band's Twitter and Facebook followers have increased in their hundreds, sometimes thousands, every hour.

The news, broken exclusively by News Ltd last night , has seen the band's YouTube audio video for their song Heartbreak Girl jump to 32,987 plays.

One Direction 's Louis Tomlinson discovered the YouTube videos of rising pop rockers 5 Seconds Of Summer, who hail from Sydney's western suburbs, and championed them via social media.

5SOS's Luke Hemmings, Michael Clifford, Calum Hood and Ashton Irwin relocated to London to write and record their debut record in December and the 1D lads invited them "to hang out".

Niall Horan dropped by their studio in January while Tomlinson and Harry Styles challenged them to a football match where the Australians were soundly beaten 15 to 2.

Their blossoming bromance turned into 5SOS's big break when 1D personally chose them to join them on the 110-date world tour which kicks off at London's O2 arena on February 23.

“We discovered 5SOS on YouTube last year and we all knew straight away they were very special. We’re so excited to have them on the road with us and we know our fans are going to LOVE what these lads do," Horan said.

In just 15 months, the Sydney lads have gone from playing to 20 people at legendary live music nursery, the Annandale Hotel, to performing in front of 1.3 million 1D fans in Europe, America and Australia. 

Guitarist Michael Clifford joked while there may have been a squeal of excitement from loved ones when they told them about the priceless opportunity a few days ago, the teens' mothers were more concerned about what they had eaten that day.

"When the guys first started talking to us about it, we thought they were joking.

"And now I look at my calendar in my iPhone and it goes from `doing our thing, doing our thing, four shows at the O2 arena in two days! It's crazy.''

5SOS won their first fans the same way as their postmodern pop peers by posting covers of their favourite artists on YouTube.

It is their ability to write and perform their own music which they hope will set them apart.

They have already had their fair share of close encounters with a devoted and sometimes hysterical female fanbase yet Clifford said it is impossible to steel themselves for the reality of 1D mania when they start the tour next week.

"We were saying that hopefully we are just going to be able to walk through the middle of everyone and no-one will care; I don't think that will be the case now. Girls just go mental for them,'' he said.

Clifford said they promise to restore Australian sporting pride by working on their soccer skills during the tour to reverse the kicking they got from the 1D lads during their ``friendly''.

"We got absolutely demolished; they turned up with all this gear and we thought we were just going to hang out and kick the ball around but they were serious. Maybe we could challenge them on rugby,'' he said.

5SOS rewarded their fans with a taste of their album by posting a free download of the catchy Heartbreak Girl online this week and will continue to record during breaks on the tour.

1D's Take Me Home Australian leg kicks off in September when 5SOS frontman Hemmings may also be juggling his HSC exams.

Clifford said the band wanted to send a special shout-out to their Australian fans.

"We are the same guys as when we started - we just kinda look older now,'' he said.

Solo artist and former One Direction member Louis Tomlinson is heading back to Australia next year, and he’s looking for local support acts to join him across the tour. Tomlinson is on the road in support of last year’s Faith in the Future LP, his second solo record. He’ll play headline shows in Melbourne, Brisbane and Sydney.

Tomlinson is looking for three local artists to join him on the Australian tour. Artists can apply for a chance to support Tomlinson here .

Faith in the Future is the follow-up to Tomlinson’s 2020 solo debut, Walls . The album came out in November 2022 and went to number one in the UK.

In the early months of 2023, Tomlinson released a documentary about his life and career, titled All Of Those Voices . Surprisingly intimate, the documentary covers the pop idol’s career following the break-up of One Direction, and sees him discover his own unique voice.

Between March and August, Niall will be touring across the world starting with Europe then flying to Australia, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan, USA and Canada before returning to Ireland and the UK to finish the tour.

Who’s supporting Niall Horan on tour?

So who is opening for Niall in 2024? Well, Niall announced in December that the band Tommy Lefroy will be supporting him on tour across the Ireland, UK and Europe leg. Irish singer Amy Michelle will also be joining Niall for some of his Dublin shows.

He tweeted, “So excited to share that @tommylefroy band will be coming on the road with us in Ireland/U.K and Europe! They are soooo good and one of my favourite bands right now. I know you’re going to love them. Get listening.”

You heard the man, if you’re going to any of his upcoming shows across Ireland, the UK and Europe then you’ve gotta do your homework. Niall’s going to want to see you singing along to his special guests before he hits the stage.

There is still some availability for Niall’s shows in Dublin, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle Upon Tyne and Aberdeen, with little to low availability showing on Ticketmaster for the rest of his tour of Ireland and U.K!

Harry Styles: Live on Tour  was Harry Styles first solo world tour, supporting his debut album . Similar to Niall Horan's Flicker Sessions 2017 , the tour initially began with a series of small venue concerts in 2017. In 2018, the show was upgraded to arenas worldwide. The tour ran from September 2017 to July 2018.

Background [ ]

Styles released his debut album in May 2017. Tour dates were announced prior to the album's release, on 28 April 2017 via Twitter and his official website. Tickets went on sale on 5 May. The small venue tour sold out in seconds due to the size of the venues. Styles chose to play smaller venues for his first shows to allow fans the opportunity for a more intimate live experience. In June, electronic band MUNA was announced as the supporting act for Styles' 2017 North American and European dates. Later that same month, Styles announced a further 56 tour dates in Europe, Asia, Australia, South America, and North America for 2018, playing arenas. The opening acts for the arena tour were announced the same day, with Kacey Musgraves in the U.S. and Canada, Warpaint in Asia, and Leon Bridges in South America and Mexico. In November, Mabel and The Preatures were announced as the opening acts for Europe and Australia respectively.

Styles wore a wardrobe consisting of custom designed suits by high fashion designers at every show. Designers included Alessandro Michele, Gucci, Calvin Klein, Raf Simons, Alexander McQueen, Givenchy, Harris Reed and Saint Laurent.

Styles would routinely wave a variety of pride flags at each show, and would often read signs from closeted fans announcing their coming out. He also announced crowd member pregnancies and/or their baby gender reveals. After several mass shooting during the US leg of the arena tour, Styles adorned his guitar with a sticker reading "End Gun Violence". He and his band participated in the March For Our Lives gun reform protest by photographing themselves wearing the official t-shirt while backstage. After considerable online fandom controversy as to whether Harry had ignored a Black Lives Matter flag at certain shows, Harry posted a photo of the flag to his Instagram, then waved the flag at many subsequent shows.

During a May 2017 show, legendary Fleetwood Mac singer Stevie Nicks joined Styles on stage for several duets. Styles was visibly emotional throughout the collaboration, and the performance garnered worldwide headlines [1] . Styles would also perform a cover of Fleetwood Mac's The Chain at each show.

During a June 2018 show, support act and country singer Kacey Musgraves joined Harry on stage during his set to perform a cover of country singer Shania Twain's classic hit "Still The One".

Other covers throughout the tour included Little Big Town's "Girl Crush", Ariana Grande 's "Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart" (which Styles co-wrote) and several One Direction covers including " Story of My Life ", " Stockholm Syndrome ", " What Makes You Beautiful " and " If I Could Fly ".

The tour was noted for raising a total of $1.2 million in charity donations from ticket and merchandise sales for 62 charities around the world. It also registered hundreds of new voters in the U.S. through a collaboration with the non-profit organisation HeadCount. Styles partnered with the environmental non-profit Reverb and engaged in a major effort for water conservation that saved the equivalent of 10,000 single-use water bottles by fans, and 3,200 by the band and crew, and recycled more than 6,500 gallons of water from buses, offices, dressing rooms and other backstage areas. Styles released two updated t-shirt designs in celebration of Pride, with all proceeds going to support GLSEN's work ensuring safe and inclusive schools for LGBTQ youth.

Grand Chess Tour: R Praggnanandhaa beats world number one Magnus Carlsen

India's R. Praggnanandhaa scored yet another victory over world number one Magnus Carlsen of Norway to keep himself afloat even as Wei Yi of China stretched his lead to a massive 2.5 points in the Superbet rapid and blitz chess tournament, a part of the Grand Chess Tour.

With nine rounds still to come in the blitz event, Wei Yi has amassed 20.5 points with seven wins on the first day. Ending the day with 7.5 out of a possible nine, Yi, seems like a man possessed and unless a hurricane hits him, is poised to win the first leg of the Grand Chess Tour.

Carlsen, on 18, is a distant second at this point and the main reason behind that is Praggnanandhaa, who has been beating the world number one often these days in the faster version of the game.

Praggnanandhaa, however is far behind the leaders with 14.5 points which makes it literally a two-horse race for the title.

In fourth spot is Arjun Erigaisi on 14 points while Duda Jan-Krzysztof of Poland is right behind him on 13. Nodirbek Abdusattorov of Uzbekistan stands sixth on 12.5, a full point clear of Vincent Keymer of Germany and the eighth spot is now taken by early leader Kirill Shevchenko of Romania with 11 points.

Anish Giri of Holland improved a little to be ninth on 10.5 while the blitz remained a cause for worry for world championship challenger D. Gukesh who is languishing at the last spot with 9.5 points in the USD 1,75,000 prize money tournament.

Carlsen notably mentioned that his nervous system had collapsed following his second-round loss against Praggnanandhaa. The world number one ended with six points out of nine, which is by all standards a decent result but following his loss to the Indian he blundered again and went down to Abdusattorov from a winning position.

Wei Yi started the day with a loss against Gukesh but recovered in quick time to only concede a draw to Carlsen while winning the rest of the seven games.

For Gukesh, it was a tough day despite a great start against the tournament leader as the Indian could only score 2.5 points in all.

With victories over Praggnanandhaa and Gukesh, Arjun ensured he remained in contention for a podium finish.

Losing to Wei Yi and Carlsen, Arjun scored five wins and two draws in his other games and will be optimistic on the final day of the event.
