STO Guest Blog: Multi-Mission Science Vessels

star trek online vesta class

It’s finally here. Straight from the pages of the “Destiny” trilogy of Star Trek novels, originally designed by Mark Rademaker, Cryptic Studios and the Star Trek Online team are proud to finally bring you the Multi-Mission Science Vessels: Vesta line.

For those of you who have been following the progress of the Vesta, this line of ships has been a long time in the making. Our ship artists, Jeff Miller and Adam Gibson, have worked for some time to capture every detail originally envisioned by Mark Rademaker, and we think you will be very pleased with its appearance. But the ship model is not the only detail we wanted to get right. The “Destiny” novels focus on the U.S.S. Aventine commanded by Captain Ezri Dax, a ship that was was key in defeating the Borg in the novel series. Simply put, this ship has a pedigree and we wanted to make sure we accurately represented its rich history and lore in as much detail as possible.

Designing the Vesta’s capabilities was a bit of a challenge. We spent a lot of time researching its specs and reviewing the novels. It was important to us that fans of the “Destiny” novels felt like they were commanding a Vesta class starship. But let’s face it; the Vesta is a technological marvel with every factory option known to Starfleet. It even has Intrepid-style landing gear! In game terms, the ship is a little over-powered. So the challenge was to bring to life as much detail as possible without breaking the game.

We first needed to decide what kind of ship the Vesta was. It’s big like a cruiser, it has cannons like an escort, it has a hangar bay stocked with a fleet of Runabouts like a light carrier, and it has advanced sensors and technology like a science vessel. We settled on it being a Science Vessel, but we decided to make a new class of science vessel. The novels classify the ship as a Multi-Mission Explorer, so we decided to call the entire line Multi-Mission Science Vessels.

Next, we took a close look at its technology. First and foremost, it had Slipstream Drive. That’s not uncommon in Star Trek Online, so we wanted to make sure the Vesta’s Slipstream was special. Next, it had several key pieces of technology that we wanted to put in the player's hands: a Multidimensional Wave-Function Analysis Module , a Quantum Field Focus Controller , a Chroniton Integrator , and a Sympathetic Fermion Transceiver . The Multidimensional Wave-Function Analysis Module could be used to create a Multidimensional Graviton Shield to protect the ship from the powerful gravimetric forces of a wormhole’s event horizon. There was some definite game potential in that. The Quantum Field Focus Controller was key in the Vesta’s Slipstream Drive, but could also focus power to the main deflector to fire a massive, sustained phaser beam or a powerful shield bubble – the later could even crush a ship. That one practically designed itself. The Chroniton Integrator could take sensor readings several seconds into the future, a key piece of technology for maintaining the ship’s Slipstream Drive. That would become the key to designing a better Slipstream Drive for the Vesta.

Then there was the Sympathetic Fermion Transceiver. Not much was said about this piece of technology except it “impressed” Geordi La Forge in more ways than one. For those who have read the novels, you know what I am taking about. So this last piece of technology seemed important, but there was not much to go on other than the name. Fermions are subatomic particles. Sympathetic, in physics terms, refers to a body vibrating or resonating as a result of similar vibrations from another body. And a transceiver is simply a transmitter and receiver. That was going to be a challenge to design and try to remain true to both the novels and the game.

So that’s where we started. We soon realized there was just too much to put in one ship. So, like the Odyssey Class , we made three: the Multi-Mission Surveillance Explorer: Vesta Class (a science model), Multi-Mission Reconnaissance Explorer: Aventine Class (a tactical model); and the Multi-Mission Strategic Explorer: Rademaker Class (an engineering model). Each ship in this line has a slightly different console slot configuration, a different power level bonus, and a unique costume. Each also has one unique Console Module item that can only be used on these three ships. The three consoles are part of a set and provide a two and three-piece set bonus when equipped on the same ship. The costumes are unique to each ship, but if you own more than one, you will unlock the appropriate costume parts to use on the others that you own.

So, in the end, we believe we truly represented the Vesta as it was intended. Fans of the novel series will recognize a lot of attention to detail in its design and fans of Star Trek Online will appreciate its capabilities. Now for the details you’ve been waiting for:

Multi-Mission Science Vessels:

Vesta-class unlocked in Star Trek Online

Vesta class is one of the most powerful vessels I know from Star Trek novels. It was mainly introduced in the Destiny trilogy. Vesta vessel was originally designed by Mark Rademaker and according to the latest blog post by Star Trek Online designer Al Rivera, the design team over at Cryptic has been working night and day to make Vesta-line as close to Rademaker's design in terms of looks and power.

Vesta Class Cannon

Read our Star Trek Online review here->>

Make no mistake, this is still an MMO game that needs a lot of balancing and to be honest I never thought I would see Vesta-class in the MMO. Developers knew that it would be over-powered too, hence they've made some changes.

...the Vesta is a technological marvel with every factory option known to Starfleet. It even has Intrepid-style landing gear! In game terms, the ship is a little over-powered.

That being said, we will most definitely see a very decent vessel but it will be far from Vesta's original power in the Destiny trilogy.

Vesta class comes in three different makes

The technology the Vesta has differentiates it from the rest of the vessels and Crypric developers made the right decision to design Vesta as a Science Vessel in the MMO. (The novels classify the ship as a Multi-Mission Explorer.)

Let's take a look at Vesta's technology. In the Destiny, Vesta had Slipstream Drive which is not that special in Star Trek Online so the developers not only included the drive but they made it even better for Vesta line in STO. Some of the technologies Vesta had were; Multidimensional Wave-Function Analysis Module, a Quantum Field Focus Controller, a Chroniton Integrator, and a Sympathetic Fermion Transceiver.

Vesta's phaser Cannon in Star Trek Online

STO developers thought this would be just too much to place in one ship. This could potentially break the game as well. So, for balance purposes, they have designed three vessels as a part of Vesta Class. The the Multi-Mission Surveillance Explorer: Vesta Class (a science model), Multi-Mission Reconnaissance Explorer: Aventine Class (a tactical model); and the Multi-Mission Strategic Explorer: Rademaker Class (an engineering model). With different costumes and different modules, each of these three ships will feel differently in game.

Finally, the base stats of a Vesta class vessel :

Quantum slipstream

Voyager navigates the slipstream

Slipstream display

A computer simulation of a slipstream

The quantum slipstream drive (also informally called quantum drive or slipstream drive ) was an advanced form of propulsion technology , first encountered by the USS Voyager in the Delta Quadrant , which had the capability of exceeding a starship 's maximum warp factor by an unprecedented degree. Similar in principle to the transwarp technology utilized by the Borg , it was originally developed by a Delta Quadrant race designated by the Borg as " Species 116 ." ( VOY : " Hope and Fear ")

Technical data [ ]

The quantum slipstream drive operated by routing energy through the vessel's main deflector , which then focused a quantum field , allowing the vessel to penetrate the quantum barrier . In order to maintain the slipstream, the phase variance of the quantum field had to be constantly adjusted, or the slipstream would collapse, violently throwing the ship back into normal space. No antimatter was involved. ( VOY : " Hope and Fear ", " Timeless ")

History [ ]

Dauntless quantum slipstream drive core

The Dauntless ' quantum slipstream drive

The Voyager crew first encountered slipstream technology in 2374 , when they discovered the USS Dauntless , a vessel ostensibly sent by Starfleet to transport them back to the Alpha Quadrant . It was subsequently discovered, however, that the vessel was an elaborate ruse by an alien named Arturis , who was seeking revenge on Captain Janeway for what he saw as her complicity in the assimilation of his species by the Borg . Planning to use the Dauntless to transport the Voyager crew back to his Borg-conquered homeworld for assimilation, Arturis settled for Janeway and Seven of Nine when his plot was discovered. Arturis was pursued in the slipstream by Voyager , which had been outfitted with the same technology. Lieutenant Commander Tuvok managed to breach the Dauntless ' shields with a photon torpedo , allowing them to rescue Janeway and Seven. Commander Chakotay subsequently ordered their slipstream altered in order to avoid Borg space, leaving Arturis to be assimilated. Voyager remained in the slipstream for an hour before it collapsed, traversing three hundred light years , although their diagnostics concluded that they could not risk using the technology again. ( VOY : " Hope and Fear ")

Voyager's slipstream drive

Voyager 's slipstream drive

The next year , the Voyager crew constructed their own quantum slipstream drive using benamite crystals, overcoming some difficulties in their first attempt. Despite promising potential results, Tom Paris discovered a phase variance in the slipstream threshold, threatening to overload the drive's quantum matrix and destroy the ship. Harry Kim realized that the smaller size of a piloted shuttle leading Voyager could allow early phase variance detection of the complex, dynamic slipstream threshold for the larger ship. These advanced data and corrections would help Voyager safely navigate the quantum slipstream.

During the test flight, with Chakotay piloting the Delta Flyer , Kim sent wrong correction values to Voyager , causing the slipstream to unexpectedly collapse ten light years from the Alpha Quadrant . Voyager crashed on an class L planet in the Takara sector , killing all hands – however, ahead of Voyager in the stable Delta Flyer slipstream, Kim and Chakotay survived the disastrous test and returned to Earth , filled with guilt.

Fifteen years later , the pair acquired a stolen Borg temporal transmitter and recovered The Doctor 's program from Voyager 's debris, and attempted to change history by allowing Voyager to stay in the slipstream. With The Doctor's expertise of Seven of Nine's physiology, Kim and Chakotay used the Borg technology to transmit a time index and new phase corrections back in time to Seven of Nine's interplexing beacon .

The initial corrections did not work – with no chance to correct their mistake, The Doctor convinced Kim to give up on the Alpha Quadrant and at least avert the disaster by transmitting information which would end the flight rather than prolong it. As Seven implemented these new corrections, the slipstream dispersed and returned Voyager safely to normal space – eliminating approximately ten years from their journey to the Alpha Quadrant. ( VOY : " Timeless ")

In 2375 , the Think Tank requested quantum slipstream technology as part of the payment for solving the " Hazari paradox." Captain Janeway warned Kurros that they never managed to get the technology to work reliably. Kurros commented that it was still intriguing, "theoretically." ( VOY : " Think Tank ")

By 2384 , Starfleet had successfully recreated their own version of the USS Dauntless , captained by Vice Admiral Janeway. ( PRO : " A Moral Star, Part 2 ")

In 3188 , Cleveland Booker implied his ship was capable of slipstream travel, if he had benamite . ( DIS : " That Hope Is You, Part 1 ")

Background information [ ]

The quantum slipstream core prop is made up of a novelty plasma globe and "bubble tubes", available from most joke/gadget shops. ( Delta Quadrant: The Unofficial Guide to Voyager , p. 248)

The drive was discussed in detail in the "Briefing: Propulsion Systems" article in Star Trek: The Magazine  Volume 2, Issue 4 .

The slipstream drive became a more prominently featured method of FTL propulsion in Gene Roddenberry 's Andromeda sci-fi series that premiered in 2000 .

Based on the three hundred light year trip in "Hope and Fear", the average speed of a quantum slipstream drive calculates out to 2.63 e6 ×10 6 times the speed of light . At that speed, Voyager could traverse its original stranding of 75,000 light years in as little as 10.4 days, assuming it didn't require significant shutdown time for maintenance or refueling.

Apocrypha [ ]

The Star Trek: Destiny trilogy introduced the Vesta -class starships, a test-bed for a Federation quantum slipstream drive, along with numerous other technologies.

In A Singular Destiny , Starfleet began to install quantum slipstream drives on its vessels in 2381 . Due to the nature of the technology, not all ships were compatible with the upgrade. An upgraded version of the technology proved to be successful, and in the novel Full Circle , Starfleet mounted an expedition to the Delta Quadrant by outfitting Voyager and several other starships with a fully-functional version of the drive.

In the Star Trek: Typhon Pact novel Zero Sum Game , set in 2382 , the Breen sent an operative to Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards to capture data pertaining to the Federation quantum slipstream drive, regarding it as a potential Federation weapon that would allow them to deliver a decisive first strike in any war between the Breen and their new allies in the Typhon Pact ( β ), including the Romulans , the Gorn , the Tzenkethi , the Kinshaya ( β ), and the Tholians .

The Breen were then contracted to build the first Typhon Pact prototype slipstream vessel. The lead researcher of the project, Thot Keer, intentionally withheld information from the other members relating to the drives development, in order to promote the Breen to a level of Pact authority equal to the Romulans. Shortly before the initial trials, the prototype, its designer, and all information relating to the project were destroyed.

In Plagues of Night , set in 2383 , various members of the Pact, led by Sela , attempted to travel to the Gamma Quadrant to obtain Jem'Hadar technology to perfect the drive. They believed that Jem'Hadar ships possessed the right structure to cope with the stresses of slipstream. The attempt resulted in the destruction of Deep Space 9 , when bombs planted to cause a diversion while they used the Bajoran wormhole caused more damage than was intended. Further attempts to develop the drive came to an end in Raise the Dawn , when the Romulan Praetor officially denounced the Pact's attempt to build a drive, noting that attempts to do so have caused more problems with the Federation than the original existence of the drive, ending their attempts for the time being.

In Star Trek Online , players are also able to use slipstream drives for brief periods after reaching Vice Admiral rank in order to travel faster between star systems. Two ships use advanced slipstream drives: The Odyssey -class allows for extended usage while the Multi-Mission Explorer series of ships, when two special devices are used, grants this the fastest warp drive level, reaching a theoretical Warp 25 without modifications and a maximum of Warp 67.56 utilizing bonuses and special items. The 2014 Risian Summer Event added in the Risian Luxury Cruiser, which gave it the Solar Sail Quantum Slipstream Drive, which made it faster than a ship's natural Quantum Slipstream, but was slower than the special slipstreams used by the Odyssey and Multi-Mission Explorer series. The newer Miracle Worker cruisers feature a Cyclical Quantum Slipstream Drive, which allows the ships to stay in the slipstream longer, and recharge in only 30 seconds, but maneuverability is significantly reduced while in slipstream drive.

Account Unlocked Starship Trait – Catom Reconstruction

While this trait is slotted, activating Hazard Emitters or any Intel Bridge Officer Ability will build up charges which will enable automated healing while your Hull is low. If you have one or more charge, one will be consumed every few seconds while below 50% Max Hull in order to immediately restore a percentage of your Max Hull.

  • While below 50% Hull, remove 1 charge of Catom Reconstruction to restore 10% of Maximum Hull (once per 5 sec)

Overview [ | ]

The Vesta -class line of ships has already proven itself a capable and versatile vessel in many regards, which caused Starfleet Intelligence to take a keen interest in further developing and specializing some its well-known functionality for dangerous - and sometimes highly-classified - intelligence operations. The result of these developments is the updated Caelian -class, which can in many respects be seen as the pinnacle of its lineage.

Class variants

Starship mastery [ | ], abilities [ | ], universal consoles [ | ].

The Legendary Caelian Intel Multi-Mission Explorer comes equipped with three pieces of the Alliance Multi-Mission Systems Set , which includes [ Console - Universal - Omni-Directional Tachyon Wave Siphon ] , [ Console - Universal - Isometric Dispersal Array ] , and [ Console - Universal - Radiation Bombardment Matrix ] .

It can also equip (but does not come equipped with) the [ Console - Universal - Protomatter Field Projector ] , from the Lukari Ho'kuun Science Vessel .

While the target is Vulnerable , one of three Expose Vulnerability abilities can be used. These powerful abilities find a critical weakness in the targeted foe and allow players to briefly exploit it.

Intelligence vessels also have a built-in passive ability which renders them undetectable at long range.

Warp Signature Masking icon (Federation)

The Legendary Caelian -class Intel Multi-Mission Explorer has a cloak that allows the ship to cloak when not in combat, granting stealth and a damage bonus upon decloaking.

Sensor Analysis [ ]

Sensor Analysis is an active toggle ability. While maintaining a Sensor Lock on a target, the player gains a stacking effect that either improves the damage and power drain against an enemy, or improves any heal directed towards an ally. This effect stacks every 3 seconds, to a maximum of 6 stacks after 18 continuous seconds. To maintain the desired effect, the player must hold the sensor lock.

Subsystem Targeting [ ]

The Legendary Caelian -class Intel Multi-Mission Explorer comes with built-in Subsystem Targeting abilities. These built-in abilities stay at Rank I and do not automatically rank up when acquiring higher tier Science starships. They are separate from Subsystem Targeting abilities gained through Tactical Space Bridge officer abilities .

Target Auxiliary Subsystems icon (Federation)

Activating a subsystem targeting ability will upgrade all energy weapons to inflict a stacking power drain on the foe's targeted subsystem for the next 10 seconds. They will also have a small chance to knock the targeted subsystem offline for a short duration.

Specialization seating

The Legendary Caelian -class Intel Multi-Mission Explorer features the following specialist seats:

Commander Science-Intelligence

Standard configuration [ | ]

Federation starships come with standard equipment and weapons of the lowest mark available at the ship's minimum rank. The items provided are appropriate to the type of vessel and its related playing style.

Scaling starship

This starship's equipment slots, base hull capacity and shield capacity scale as your level increases.

Equipment slots and seating [ ]

As you rank up every 10 levels, up to level 40, the ship's forward weapon slots, aft weapon slots, tactical console slots, engineering console slots, science console slots and available bridge officer (boff) abilities will slowly increase toward endgame capabilities:

Hull strength [ ]

This table shows how the ship's hull strength scales at each level. The base hull of all scaling starships is 10,000, which is then multiplied by the ship's hull modifier (0.95 for the Legendary Caelian -class Intel Multi-Mission Explorer), and then multiplied by the scaling multiplier below at each level.

T6-X upgrade

By using an [ Experimental Ship Upgrade Token ] , the Legendary Caelian -class Intel Multi-Mission Explorer may be upgraded to T6-X , unlocking an extra ship device slot, universal console slot, and the ability to slot an extra starship trait .
