Perry Golf is rooted in trips to Scotland but it also offers a wide menu of cruises in partnership with the Azamara line, including trips through the British Isles, Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Kalos Golf is almost entirely cruise-based, with smaller ships than many—about 100 passengers—and an eye for luxury. 

Haversham & Baker Expeditions emphasizes small group travel to Britain, Ireland and Europe, using private buses and exclusive-use accommodations. Carr Golf and Celtic Golf are outstanding for Irish trips. In non-pandemic times, the former hosts multiple father-son and father-daughter tournaments each year and the latter has built a nice business out of pairing golf travel with big international events such as the Solheim Cup.

The truth is, any of these firms would be great help in planning a golf trip anywhere. Our advice: Contact them all to see what they’ve got and what they charge. And again, we wouldn’t delay. Because of the coronavirus, there’s a ton of pent-up demand. On top of that, the Open Championship will be held at St. Andrews in ’22, attracting all the more golfers while limiting the supply of tee times.

We loved ALL the courses. Adding St Patrick’s was really special. So glad Bill Hogan suggested it.

Adare was our least favorite, but everyone agreed it was ideal for the day we got off the plane to practice for the tournament we ran on the final four courses. Everyone’s favorite was Royal County Down (and mi ne especially because I had 3 birdies including the 18th!).

Drumshanbo was a huge hit. The Shed Distillery tour was fun, and we got a kick out of how everyone in the town knew about our helicopter within an hour. .

Northern Ireland was a blast. We were there with the Davidson group and the hotels Bushmills and Slieve Donard were very nice. Our driver was a true gentlemen and took great care of us. Royal Portrush and Royal County Down were our favorite courses, and Ardglass and Ballyliffin were great surprises. I’m so glad we had a driver because after golf we had some of the local Bushmills product each day in the golf clubhouses. 🙂 Next time we will spend more time in Belfast, there is so much to do there. Our half-day tour was not enough, but overall the trip was superb. Thanks to Bill and Matthew and Allan for all the hard work.

We worked with your company and Bill Hogan set up the trip. When we got to Ireland Allan had everything perfect, and we wish we could have stayed longer. Kinsale was a nice town to start, and Killarney was our base for five nights to play the courses around that area. Loved Ballybunion and Waterville , they are spectacular. Our last round was at Lahinch and that might have been he best course of the bunch. Thank you to the team at Premier for the great time. We’ll be back!

It is estimated that there are more than 400 golf courses in Ireland, including both 9 and 18-hole courses. For a country its size, Ireland has a lot of golf courses. Three of Ireland’s most prestigious courses are Royal County Down , Royal Portrush , and Portmarnock .

The oldest golf course in Ireland is The Royal Curragh Golf Club, located in the heathland of the Curragh in County Kildare. There are records of a match being played there as early as 1852. Other old courses in the country include Royal Belfast (1881) & Royal Dublin (1885).

The best time for an Ireland golf trip is subjective for most people and depends on budget, preferred weather, interests, and availability. Generally, however, the golf travel season in Ireland is from April to October when the weather is favorable, and courses are in peak condition. 

To avoid the crowds, the shoulder months of April and October offer greater value, but you must pack warmly and prepare for wind and rain. We recommend May and September, a month after the season begins and a month before the season ends, respectively, to ensure better weather and fewer crowds.

The cost to play golf in Ireland varies depending on the season, currency, course, package, etc. Generally, playing in the off-season or either side of the peak season costs less. Northern Ireland golf packages can cost more than similar tours in other parts of Ireland, and it’s worth noting that Northern Ireland uses the British Pound and not the Euro.

The courses you choose on your Ireland golf trip will also affect the rates, with the most prestigious resorts commanding higher prices.

Like many things, the best courses in Ireland will be subjective. However, based on sources that provide rankings of golf courses in Ireland, the courses considered the best by golfing enthusiasts, pros, and architects include Royal Portrush , Royal County Down , Ballybunion , Lahinch , Rosapenna & Portmarnock .

There are several ways to book a golf tour in Ireland, depending on your preferences and budget. 

The easiest option is to book via a travel agency. Ireland golf packages are designed to include almost everything you will need on a golfing trip here. For instance, Premier Golf specializes in luxury golf tours to Ireland, with a team based in Killarney that will take care of everything for you. 

You could also book a trip yourself via online platforms, booking travel and accommodation separately. You’ll need to check tee times and act as a one-person golf tour agency in this case. This option is a little higher risk as certain courses have restrictions and requirements, such as the need for a caddie. 

A final option is to book via a local golf resort or club, where stay-and-play packages include accommodation and golfing among other amenities.

Depending on which option you choose, your experience will vary.

Several major golf tournaments have been played in Ireland over the years. The most prestigious golf tournament to be held here is the Open Championship, which is one of the four major championships in professional golf. The 153rd edition of the Open Championship is scheduled to take place in 2025 at the iconic Royal Portrush Golf Club . 

In addition, the 2027 Ryder Cup will be held at Adare Manor , having previously been played at the K Club in 2006.

Treetops Premier Golf Course Review

Introduction

In golf course architecture, there aren’t too many names bigger than Tom Fazio.  With a resume that includes Shadow Creek, Pinehurst #4 & #8, and Karsten Creek, just to name a few, my expectations for his course at  Treetops Resort  were sky high.  In this review, I’ll let you know whether or not the course lived up to them.

Practice Facility

The Premier Course is located at  Treetops  North, just a short drive from the main resort.  There, it shares a large multi-tiered driving range and numerous putting greens with the Tradition, Signature, and Threetops Courses.  The real  highlight of the practice area is the Putting Course , pictured above.  It’s a great way to test your skills before you play or settle those last couple skins.

Amenities & Customer Service

Throughout  Treetops , the customer service is excellent.  It is always easy to find a resort employee, and they’re helpful without being smothering.

I’ll get into the amenities of the entire resort in an upcoming feature, but the course itself has ample “extras” without taking the focus off the golf.  The clubhouse is well stocked with soft goods, and it has a handful of clubs in case you need an emergency replacement or upgrade.  It’s also worth mentioning that the staff does an  outstanding job keeping the pace of play brisk .  I had the first tee time, so I was able to play quickly, but I observed many golfers coming off the course after noon boasting of sub 4-hour rounds.

Course Conditions

Just as they were at the Tradition and Masterpiece courses, the conditions at the Premier Course were excellent.  The  greens were very smooth  and ran at a consistent, quick pace.  The tee boxes were in good shape, but the fairways were even better.  Importantly for a course with a good number of bunkers, all the traps had plenty of sand and played very consistently.

Beauty & Scenery

The Fazio Premier Course has some of the premier land on the Treetops North property.  It has loads of great elevation changes and some excellent views .  Overall, it’s a very dramatic course : wide fairways, big undulations, large greens…you get the picture.  Mr. Fazio has doing just enough to accentuate the beauty of this wonderful piece of land.

Course Design & Difficulty

Though the Treetops Premier  course looks big, it plays much smaller .  Look at the picture above as an example: the green may be large in square footage, but being on the wrong tier is just as bad as missing the green entirely.  The picture at the top of the page tells the story from the tee: though the fairways are wide, missing them is almost as good as going OB.  These deceptively small targets really force you to narrow your focus and hit accurate golf shots.

Adding to the difficulty is the constant undulation of the fairways.  Before you tee it up, remind yourself that part of golf is accepting the “rub of the green.”  Over 18 holes, you’ll get a lot of good bounces from the courses generous curves, but you’ll catch some bad breaks as well.  Dealing with tough lies is a major part of the challenge that the Premier Course presents.

The greatest strength of this Fazio design is the variety .  While there’s plenty of variety in length (par 4’s range from 281 to 458 from the blue tees), that’s not the whole story.  Holes of similar length may play entirely differently due to different elevation changes, angles, and hazards.  This is a course that requires not only superior shot making but also high-level decision making and course management.

The top rate for the Premier Course at  Treetops  is around $115, which is not unusual for a resort course by a big name architect.  While I wouldn’t rate this a steal, the quality of the layout makes it a fair value.  As with any resort, the best deals can be had with stay and play packages.  Treetops also offers heavily discounted replay and twilight rates

Fans of Tom Fazio’s designs will not be disappointed by the Treetops   Premier Course.  It’s a big, beautiful course that packed with enough physical and mental challenge to test any golfer.
